10) Do you like your school: I really do!  For graduate school, I think that the department vibe and your relationship with your advisor is more important than whether you’re at a prestigious program or what your area of research is (especially if you’re like me and don’t have a strong attachment to a specific topic).  My cohort isn’t competitive and the department genuinely wants all of us to succeed.  

12) What motivates you to study: Lots of things, honestly.  To list a few: genuine love of astronomy, stubbornness, some anxiety around failure.  But also, the fact is that because of my ADHD, I’m very, very rarely motivated to study unless I’ve got a deadline.  It’s easier to be motivated about my research, because I’m figuring things out (and also I don’t want to disappoint my advisor), but that’s not really studying!

Dandelion: Have you ever tried to garden?

yep :) grew vegetables once, and i planted some heliconias and this other plant im not sure the name of; they now consistently reproduce on their own, they’re still there, i think my neighbours used to weed them (before covid-19). 

now i have potted plants in auto-watering pots. i’m not one for consistent care of a plant, im more for systems that care for themselves.

bones: i used to draw a lot, i’ve always made art for as long as i can remember and took every available class im school. idk why i stopped, i miss it terribly and want to start again. i’m just a huge virgo perfectionist and somewhere as i grew up i got that mentality of “if its not perfect i dont even wanna do it” which is toxic as hell

birch: i’m proud of myself and my personal growth. i’ve learned to cope and live with my mental illnesses and my anxiety. it’s a daily struggle but considering i am no longer allowd to take medication (bc of the military) and i currently don’t have a therapist and it’s something that impacts my every waking moment so the fact that i’m mentally doing pretty alright lately and not just an emotional mess of panic and anxiety is a win. i don’t give myself enough credit for how hard i work so i’d say i’m proud of that.

9. Favorite class out of everything you’ve ever taken and why?

my all time favorite class ive taken was intro to astronomy my freshman year of college!!!!!! it was kinda math heavy, but the professor was super passionate (and i also knew him already cuz i volunteer in the observatory) and he really cared about the students! also just the subject material in general was more thorough than normal survey astronomy course

44. Are you a doodler?

i was BIG TIME in middle school and high school!!!!!! now i keep my doodles confined to sketchbooks outside of lectures adhfahjfs

i was tagged by @aztrolab to show and tell my desk space!

first of all, i’ve only set up this desk under a week ago so it is not at all done being organized.

i have a little gray desk that used to be in my brother’s room so i don’t really like how the neon yellow doesn’t match anything in my room. but this i just really needed a place to work from and it’s temporary. but i may paint the legs of this desk to match better.

i put my desk in the corner of my room that also has my telescope which i thought was fun! and i just hung up this huge moon poster i’ve had and also on the wall on the right is my framed plate jacket from my research trip to the harvard archive. i also just have a wooden chair that i put this huge blanket i knit on the back so its a little comfier. 

on my desk itself, my laptop takes up a good portion of the space. on the left i have a stack of textbooks and notebooks (also my kindle!) for stuff i’m currently working on, and there are also 2 folders at the bottom of that pile i use to hold any papers i need.  next to that, i have a mug that holds all my mildliners (which are brand new!!) and a couple of my pens. on the right i have a small box that holds random supplies such as scissors and tape. on top of that i have a cup with some markers and other pens and also an amazon alexa (which i got for free from someone) that i like to use as a speaker and to make reminders to myself.  that last thing on my desk is next to that box i also have my airpods in the little blue case. 

anyway i’m happy with my desk space for how quickly i threw it together!
