We used to have a lovebird named Loki but he ran away.

Azula saying something along the lines of the matching lovebirds to Zuko and Mai in ember island. He thinks is because their fashion choices but Azula goes, at least she can cover her scars not like you, bcuse Mai had a stage where she picked on fights while she wasn't that good at her knives.

Some Mailee fluff
This fic is for the 1k writting challege from @fromthewatertribe. I had so much fun writing this and it’s my first finished fic in 2 years. This fic plays in an Modern University AU, I hope you don’t mind. And sorry if the characters are a little out of character, I tried my best.
Prompts used: 9. and 11 (in bold)
It was finally the long awaited summer break. In the last weeks of the semester Mai couldn’t concentrate on anything besides on how to work up the courage to ask her crush out. “Summer break is the perfect time to hang out with Ty Lee without the stress of college”, Mai thought to herself, at least that’s what she thought happened. Azula overheard what Mai said and smirked, “Should I help you? I’m sure Ty Lee would like to hang out with you too.” Mai sighed and answered coldly, ”If it’s real help and not something for you to take advantage of, sure.” Azula laughed and pouted at the same time, “Damn, you caught me. Just kidding! I overheard Ty Lee talking about how she wants to go to that new bubble tea place, you should invite her there.” Mai, typical of her, didn’t react to Azula’s laugh and pouting. “A bubble tea date, huh? Doesn’t sound like a bad idea. I will message her today.” Azula grinded, “Good Luck, even if you don’t need it. I’m glad I could help you!” Azula waved Mai goodbye, as she had her own business to take care of. Mai took out her phone and messaged Ty Lee.
“Hey, do you have any plans for summer break?” Ty Lee replied instantly.
“Hi, Mai! No, I’m totally free.”
“Good, when would you like to hang out with me at the new bubble tea place?”
“OMG! YES! How about directly tomorrow, at 4 pm?”
“Sure, let’s meet directly there!”
“Got it! I look forward to it!”
Wow, that went better than expected, Mai thought to herself and texted Azula.
“Ty Lee agreed to go to the place with me”
“Congrats! I told you, she is also into you”
“Maybe. We will see how it will go.”
The next day…
Mai got ready and put on her makeup. Her cat eye was so sharp it could kill a man, and the darkest lipstick, she owned, could scare off anyone. Maybe not the most fitting for a date, but it made Mai feel the most confident. She threw all the necessary stuff in her purse and put on her bad bitch heels. At 3:55 Mai was already at the meeting spot, so she decided to call Ty Lee: ” Where the fuck are you?” “Space doesn’t really exist, so I’m nowhere. Life is built on social constructs and, since there’s no way to know if we’re really alive or if it’s just an illusion, I can’t be anywhere.” “Ty Lee.” “Yeah, sorry, I got caught up but I’ll be there soon.” “Good. I will wait for you.” 10 minutes passed by and Ty Lee rolled up to the bubble tea cafe on her roller skates. Typical Ty Lee, Mai thought as she smiled slightly. It wasn’t common for Mai to smile, so Ty Lee appreciated every moment she saw the smile of her crush. Mai scanned the bubbly girl with her sharp eye from head to toe. Ty Lee was wearing a crimson red sleeveless crop top. Matching to the top was the white skater skirt with small pale pink and rose colored polka dots on it. Her roller skates were a pale pink as well. The smile on the face of Mai slightly increased, causing Ty Lee to blush. “You look beautiful”, Mai complimented her crush. “Thanks! You also look great”, Ty Lee replied. Mai wasn’t the type to reciprocate compliments, but as Ty Lee was her crush a weak heat spread itself across Mai’s cheeks. Still blushing Mai opened the door to the cafe and indicated for Ty Lee to come in, “After you.” Ty Lee smiled and did a small curtsy, which caused Mai to giggle. The two girls found a table in the corner and took a seat there. Mai couldn’t stop looking at Ty Lee while she was inspecting the menu. “I will take the Mango Milk Tea, what about you?” Ty Lee reached out the menu to Mai. While blushing Mai took the menu and looked at it “The Yuzu Matcha tea sounds interesting, I will take that.” “Noted.” A familiar voice interrupted the two love birds. Ty Lee looked up shocked to see Zuko, who was in an apron holding a notebook with a pen. “Zuko? What are you doing here?” Mai asked nonchalantly. Azula’s brother sighed and replied “I work here, if you haven’t noticed it. It’s Uncle’s cafe after all.” Ty Lee processed all the things Zuko said “Oh my god, that’s so cool!” “Yeah, you could say it like that. Your tea will be ready shortly” and with these words Zuko left the two lovebirds alone. “Azula never told me that Zuko works at this cafe, well whatever, she probably has her reasons,” Mai said something after listening to Ty Lee’s and Zuko’s chit-chat. After 10 minutes of waiting Zuko brought Ty Lee and Mai their bubble teas. Ty Lee was super excited and instantly started drinking it. “Wow, it tastes delicious! I didn’t expect anything less from Uncle Iroh.” Mai smiled at excited Ty Lee and also took a sip of her Yuzu Matcha tea. Her eyes widened at how good it tasted. “You are right! It’s really good.” While enjoying the teas Ty Lee and Mai talked and laughed. Zuko took a glance at the table, where they were sitting and noticed that he never saw Mai smile so much. She must really like Ty Lee, he thought. In that moment Mai noticed Zuko and sent him a death stare, which caused the boy to shift his focus back on the bubble tea he was preparing. It was starting to get dark and the girls were ready to leave. Ty Lee pulled out her wallet, prepared to pay for her tea. Mai placed her hand on Ty Lee’s and with a smile on her face said “Don’t worry about it, it’s on me.” Ty Lee grinded back and nodded. As soon as the girls exited the cafe, Ty Lee hugged Mai and whispered in her ear “I enjoyed today a lot! I don’t mind hanging out with you again.” Mai hugged Ty Lee back and smiled. “I know one more thing which could make this day ever better.” Mai released her crush from the hug and slowly placed her dark-colored lips on Ty Lee’s pink ones. Ty Lee, initially shocked about Mai’s forwardness, let herself lose in the embrace of the kiss and felt the warmth rise to her face. Ty Lee placed her hands on Mai’s neck and broke the kiss for a moment to catch a break. She looked up into Mai’s eyes and said shyly “You were right, it did make the day better.”

Day 2 - Counterpart
Chapter summary: So following Zuko’s addition to Team Aang, Katara tries her hardest to make Zuko feel included in the team, but with their past history, things might not be as simple...
Word Count: 2.761
Enjoy :)
“WHAT?!”
Katara sighed yet again. The plan was the wait for the others to wake and introduce Zuko, then. However, when Aang walked into her tent and nearly blew it into the air, things changed. She didn’t believe that Zuko’s mere presence was enough to instigate such reactions for Aang.
It must have been from seeing Katara leaning so closely against his arm which… she may or may not have done on purpose when she was certain that Zuko was asleep. She couldn’t help that he radiated a comfortable heat against the cold ground.
But really, their simultaneous reaction was from Katara’s suggestion that Zuko be Aang’s firebender instructor.
“But he’s…” Aang trailed off, taking his eyes from her and pointing his gilder at Zuko.
Katara looked over at Zuko whose eyes were on the ground, as if to show that he was at their mercy and would take any insults if it meant that they would give him another chance. Seeing his pursed lips made Katara want to hug him and assure him that this was only a phase. “Aang, we are running out of time and we need you to learn firebending so you have a better chance against Ozai.”
“Sugar Queen is right, Aang.”
Aang looked at Sokka and Suki for solace but they averted his stare. He took a moment before finally agreeing.
“What a reunion, though.” Toph said as she went back to their camp, sat on a log and waited for Katara to get cooking.
Katara sighed before she too made her way to the cooking. Not before looking back to Zuko. “You coming?”
“O-Oh, yeah. Sorry, just spaced out.”
Katara felt her cheeks heat. “N-No, that’s totally fine.” Katara placed a hand over a racing heart. Calm down, she told herself.
But she couldn’t. Not when Zuko decided to sit next to her for breakfast. Hip to hip, shoulder to shoulder. She would have moved… had it not been for Aang pressing against her on her other side, and glaring Zuko down.
While Sokka and Toph stole the spotlight with their lighthearted banter, Katara poured their stew for them. After handing Aang his, she stirred the pot. Since she didn’t expect an additional member, there was not enough stew for them both. Katara shrugged it away and poured more for Zuko since she was unsure of how well he had eaten prior to joining them. She heard a noise coming from Zuko. “Is something the matter?”
_____________________________________
Zuko knew that he would have to engage himself with the rest in order for them to warm up to him but… when Katara was one of them, he couldn’t help but only focus on what she thought of him. So he had only watched. He had watched how she so gently would pour the stew into the bowls and give them to her friends with a smile. She would at times chuckle from either Toph or Sokka’s snarky remarks at each other.
He wanted to help but he didn’t know how, and he was not about to mess it up for himself in case an accident were to occur. While watching her, he noticed the stew getting gradually smaller. It wasn’t until she handed Aang his breakfast that he knew there wasn’t going to be enough. He hoped that she would pour him the bare minimum and give the remaining to herself. However when she leaned back, with her hand moving towards him he stammered, earning him a look that he hoped his cheeks wouldn’t react upon.
“Is something the matter?” She asked.
“No, it’s just…” He looked away from her. If he looked any longer, he knew his body would betray him, especially his lips.
When he looked up he was sure his eyes were deceiving him for he saw the corners of her mouth turn slightly upwards.
“Don’t worry, Katara is not good at poisoning stuff.” Sokka said.
Katara scoffed and murmured loud enough for Sokka to hear. “Don’t try me.”
She shook her head and stretched the bowl to him. He solemnly took it, not wanting to seem ungrateful. But when Katara poured the remaining, which didn’t look enough to him, the guilt poured all over him. He would continuously look over at her plate to see if she was done. He was taking his time with his stew, not because he didn’t like it. In fact, it was delicious. But-
“Do you not like it?”
Zuko snapped out of his thoughts and looked at the source. Katara looked at him with concern. Damn it, he cursed. He hadn’t meant to doze off like that, again. But when he watched those plump lips of her move he couldn’t help but want to touch them. Feel them. He wanted to know how soft they were. Were they as soft as the person they belonged to?
“NNo!”
“No? Oh, I-”
“No, I meant like it. Love it! It’s great, very delicious.”
Zuko’s face was burning with embarrassment. He saw Katara exhale as if she were relieved that- no, she was probably happy that- no, he was nobody to her. He was- “It’s just…”
Zuko’s hands betrayed him as it hovered his bowl over hers and began pouring some stew into it. Then the words sprung out. “I think you deserve it more than I do. After all, my presence wasn’t expected.”
_______________________________
Katara was too close to dropping her bowl and latch onto him! The softness in his eyes. The kindness in words was enough to melt icebergs. Oh, she never thought someone would offer her, her more food when it was usually the opposite!
“Zuko, I… I don’t.”
“Shut up and take it, Sugar Queen. Maybe then your heart will calm down before it stops.”
“Toph!”
Zuko looked between her and Toph in confusion. She shook her head and smiled at him. “Thank you, Zu-”
An explosion sounded and in the air, they saw Azula. They abandoned their camp and prepared for battle but before they could make a move, Azula struck the temple above them and the ground rumbled.
“Get out of the way!” Sokka yelled.
Katara’s feet froze in place at the giant boulders falling her way. “I won’t make it.” She whispered to herself until she felt a pair of strong arms push into her. The next thing she knew, she was rolling on the floor but with surprisingly no scratches as the mysterious person had taken the impact.
“Who?!” She looked- “Zuko!”
“Are you okay?!” He asked frantically.
Katara cursed herself for blushing in moments like this. His face was so close to hers that she had lost all speech. His lips… she could practically feel his breath on her cheeks. “Y-yes, thank you.”
Katara again flushed as he gave her a small smile before lifting himself up, and offering her a hand. She gladly took it, ravishing in the softness that was his hands. She grabbed his arm before he joined the battle between Toph, Aang and Azula. “Are you hurt, Zuko?”
“No, I’m fine.”
Liar. The scratches were evident enough. “I can heal them real quick-”
“Retreat!” Sokka yelled. She looked over to him to find the Gaang making their way to them. “Retreat into the tunnels!”
Before Katara could react, her hand was in Zuko’s and she was led towards the tunnels with Zuko taking the lead until they were at the entrance. He let go to Katara’s dismay. When he faced Azula she spoke. “You’re not about to fight her, are you?”
“I will distract her-”
“No!”
Everybody stood still. Katara didn’t care as she continued. “You’re not fighting her alone. I’m going with you!”
He looked at her, she was waiting for the earful but it never came as he ran towards Azula. As she was about to follow him she was dragged away by Sokka. “Let me go! You can’t let him do this-!”
“Katara!”
Katara stopped at the tone of Sokka’s voice. The sheer dominance in his tone made her huff before she fled into the tunnel with the others.
_________________________________
Luckily Zuko had made it, and Katara felt a tingly feeling when she caught him and pulled him onto Appa. When he was saddled, she looked him over for injuries.
“What are you looking at?”
“Are you hurt?”
“No, just minor scratches.”
“Let me heal them.”
“I’m fine.”
Katara slid closer, making all of them go still. “Let me heal them.”
Sokka could tell that this was going to blow up, so to prevent it, he nudged Zuko in the elbow. Hard
“Ow, what was that for?” Zuko rubbed his elbow and before he could demand further answers Katara opened her mouth.
“Ha! Now you are hurt, so let me,” she grabbed the arm he was rubbing, “heal you.” She quickly brought her water out and began the healing before he could protest.
“I told you I’m fine.” He placed a hand on top of hers, something that earned him a blush from Katara. “Don’t waste your energy like that.”
Katara’s mouth was fidgeting with the words as she had had enough of Zuko putting himself down like that. First during breakfast and now this. He was more than that… he meant more to her than he led himself to believe. He was-
“You’re saying that now Sparky but your heart wasn’t beating as fast until Katara touched you. Aaand she is still touching you.” Toph grinned.
“TOPH!”
“Aww, you two are such love-”
“Soooo, I see a beach. Let’s go there!” Aang said in the middle of it all.
Katara knew her entire face was painted in red and there was nothing to hide or stop it. And although she thanked Aang for butting in, she couldn’t help but want Toph to finish that sentence. Lovebirds, she knew was the word. And strangely enough, Katara still held onto Zuko’s arm (even after healing the scratches), stroking her way down to his forearms.
His delicate skin and strong muscles relaxed her, comforted her. So she kept her hands there. Not caring about the eyes that would occasionally steal a look.
____________________________________
It had been a week since they settled on the inhabited beach. This week saw Katara lecturing and nearly screeching at her friends for either being too reckless or too careless about their surroundings. It was because of this that she decided to make Zuko her tent partner for the rest of the journey.
“Hey Katara, we are out of food!”
Before Katara could give Sokka a mouthful, Zuko spoke. “Sokka, she cooks each and every meal. I think it would only be fair to hunt the food for her.”
“Zuko…”
“Don’t worry, I’ll go and hunt for food.”
“No wait,” she walked over to him, “I’ll come.”
Katara thought she made the biggest mistake of her life by inviting herself but… she and Zuko were actually holding a conversation. And she was smiling and giggling in between his weird yet funny jokes.
“And then I told my uncle, ‘that’s not it works’”
Katara laughed this time. Her hand made its way to her mouth as if to cover it for being out of character. She looked between them. Empty. They were far from the camp and it was getting dark. Looking from the clouds it was going to rain as well and-
It poured down on them, the thick clouds rumbling. “I guess we are not getting any food today.” She said monotonously.
______________________________
Zuko would have shrugged at what she said had it not been for the tone. It was as if Katara wasn’t concerned about the food. Or cared that they were going to return empty handed. “Are you okay?”
The surprised look on her face told him that she wasn’t asked this question often. This or she couldn’t believe the audacity that he would ask such a personal question.
Katara started. “I… don’t know.” She kept pacing even when Zuko had stopped underneath a thick branch whose leaves covered most of the rain drops.
“Katara.”
“ZUKO!”  Was the last thing he heard before a thunderous lightning struck down the branch.
_________________________________
Katara sprinted towards him. Her legs wouldn’t give until her arms connected with his being and pushed him out of harm's way. Panting, Katara lay up, worriedly looking for any injuries on the face beneath her. The face she oh so wanted to kiss every night in their tent. “Zuko, are you okay?!”
Zuko yelped in pain as his hands reached for his feet. Katara followed his hands and gasped as his left foot was under the log. “No!”
Katara desperately pushed the log away, but to nearly no avail as it was heavy. She stretched her arms up and collected the raindrops into a huge wave. She bended the water and gave the log a massive push. When it lifted, she quickly pulled his foot out before letting it go.
Katara bent the water from their clothes and used that to make a shield above them, covering the rain.
“Zuko…” She whispered to herself as she saw Zuko groaning in pain. She began healing his ankle.
“Don’t worry,” her voice was shaky, “you’ll be okay.”
Katara didn’t understand why she was becoming emotional. Seeing Zuko hurt. Zuko… in pain. She didn’t like it. It was as bad as when he talked down on himself.
This week hadn’t been easy on Zuko. Although Toph and Suki were okay with him, Sokka and Aang were still on the fence with Zuko. Understandably so but… he was trying! Trying to make amends with them and she could see how regretful he was of his actions so why? Why couldn’t they just forgive him? She- Zuko… Did they never notice how Zuko tended to talk down on himself when he makes a mistake or feels that he is being too pushy? Yet he still scolds them when they are being reckless or careless. That’s a sign that he cares because he doesn’t want to see them hurt! Yet they are still...
“Katara?”
Katara looked from the healed ankle to Zuko who was sitting up. “Are you okay?”
Katara scrambled for words before she said. “It’s just… the others are still hesitant around you and it’s just… urgh! Like, you are trying your best and yet!”
___________________________________
Zuko just stared at the beautiful waterbender as she was complaining about her friends… treatment of him? She was defending him? Zuko gulped, not wanting to cause a rift between them and Katara. “It’s fine, it’s understandable. I was afterall-”
“No!”
Zuko was speechless.
“You’re not like that anymore. You saved us! You could have gotten hurt and you also look out for them when I’m not there. So what if you scold them? They won’t listen if you don’t.”
Zuko chuckled. Katara stared at him as if she saw a ghost. Zuko coughed and muttered an apology.
“No, no, you… laughed. I… haven’t heard you laugh before.”
“Oh, yeah I’m working on it.”  This time she giggled.
“I’m happy you joined us.” She said. Oh how Zuko wanted to embrace her right there and then. “I… For the longest time it felt like I was the parent of the group and now… it feels like I’m not alone about it.”
Zuko blushed.
_______________________________
She saw a red color stain on Zuko's cheeks. Cute, she thought. She was surprised that she would even admit this. But.. it was true. Aang could be a handful at times. Sokka and Toph had their moments that just drove her nuts. And although Suki was with them, it didn’t account to much. But with Zuko… He still hadn’t said anything and she was worried that she might have made it awkward-
“You deserve praise for making it this far without chopping their heads off.”
Katara laughed. He continued. “I know it’s going to take some time before they warm up to me. That’s why I’ve been,” she saw him gulp, “sitting with you at breakfast and lunches and… you get the drift. I don’t feel tense when I’m around you as opposed to…” Aang and Sokka, he wanted to say.
Katara couldn’t help but reach for his hand which she felt heating up. “Don’t worry,” she said, still looking at his tender hand, “they will.”
“You want to head  back to the camp? They must be worried.”
Katara shook her head, entwining her fingers with his which halted the words he was about to spill.
She looked at him, locking her eyes with his. “I want to stay a little longer.”

Fire and Water
Azula wanted so much more than the life they had prepared for her, but stuck on the biggest ship the Fire Nation had ever built, it felt as if her whole future had been planned out by someone else. Titanic AU.
'I don't get where all the fuss is about,' Azula said. 'It doesn't look a lot bigger than our previous warships.'
'It's not that much bigger - but it's not a warship, my dear,' Chan said. 'It's for passengers only.'
Azula wasn't sure if that was supposed to make her like the ship better. In her eyes, only warships carried any meaning.
'So the colonization will be able to go more quickly,' she said.
Chan nodded enthusiastically. 'The Fire Nation will be able to repopulate the entire world,' he said. 'Starting with the Earth Kingdom.'
They first had to capture the Earth Kingdom, Azula thought. She knew that wasn't happening anytime soon. As a woman, she was forbidden attend war meetings. Luckily, her father didn't believe in that and had recognized Azula as his most promising child, allowing her to be present at all occasions. Still, her ideas were often ignored by other men.
Azula knew that she could take down Ba Sing Se if they just gave her a chance. She was the most intelligent person in that room and the most capable bender.
Her father had even told her he would pronounce her his official heir one day - but for now, that day seemed far away. Women had only been allowed in the army for two years and it wasn't very popular just yet. The firebending academies for girls were attracting more students every year though, so that was promising.
Azula would change the world, she had promised herself. A world where women and men could be equals.
'You alright, my dear?' Chan asked.
Azula plastered a fake smile on her face. 'Of course,' she responded. She softly touched the hat on her head. She didn't like it, nor did she like the enormous dress she was wearing. It was impossible to fight, to firebend in it - but her mother had told her she would have to wear it on an occasion like this.
Azula wished she was home, able to wear her armor, to discuss with her father and to train. Instead, she would be locked up on this boat for more about a week, together with her mother, several annoying generals and the fiance she despised.
'Everyone ready?' Ursa asked.
Azula sighed before she nodded. Chan presented her arm and she was forced to take it as they walked towards the ship.
0o0o0o
'Aren't these rooms wonderful?' Ursa exclaimed.
Azula crossed her arms in front of her chest, placing her weight on one hip. They were horrible, she thought, their decorations too frivolous and playful. She felt her upper lip curl at the thought of having to spend an entire week her.
'Are these all part of the royal suite?' Chan asked.
Ursa nodded. 'We're the only ones allowed to use them,' she said. 'So from now on, we'll always be able to travel in style.'
'Excuse me,' Azula said, not able to witness the scene any longer. She retreated into her room, happy to have a bit of solitude, even though she knew it would only be a short moment. Ursa represented everything Azula didn't want to be - content with her indoor life and happy to obey her husband and the rules society placed on her.
Azula had packed her armor, but her mother had it removed before they left. Ozai had send a pitiful glare Azula's way, but he didn't intrude. He probably didn't feel like having another fight with his wife.
No, Azua thought, she had been wrong. Ursa was many things, but not an obedient wife. Only on the surface, but she always found a way to disobey him in secret.
'Are you ready to explore the ship?' Chan asked, having followed her into her room. Azula wasn't sure what to answer. She didn't want to spend more time with Chan, but on the other hand - her corset made breathing a little more difficult than it ought to be and she could really use some fresh air.
'You two lovebirds can go, but make sure to be in time for dinner,' Ursa said. 'Azula, be there around six - you need to change in an evening dress before we can leave.'
0o0o0
Evening dresses were even more uncomfortable than normal dresses. They made her feel weak - like a little girl, whereas her armor made her feel like a warrior.
The generals present on this initiation trip looked at her. They weren't used to seeing her like this, dressed up by her mother. She said they only admired her beauty, but Azula didn't want to be admired for something as arbitrary as her appearance. She wanted to be admired for the things she had worked for - her fighting prowess, her intellectual skills.
So she made sure that she looked were extra ferocious tonight. Azula knew she could take each and every one of these generals in battle - and she made sure they wouldn't forget it.
They had brought their wives as well. Azula tried to listen to the war-related conversations the men had, but instead, she could only hear her mother's voice as she inquired at newborn babies and old family members. They spoke of parties they would organize and gossiped about other women in the capital.
Azula could suddenly see her entire life. She would be like her mother - attending parties, drinking tea and gossiping, whereas Chan would get to talk about politics and war. It would be an endless parade of meaningless parties.
That moment, Azula was sure her father would never name her his heir. She only had to look at these men - they would never accept a woman as their head of state. And in the end, her father had to listen to these men. He might be Firelord, but he still needed the approval of the nobles.
'Excuse me,' Azula suddenly said, standing up.
'Where are you going?' Ursa asked. She looked up at Azula with a discontented frown on her face.
'I'm not feeling too well,' Azula said. 'I just need a bit of fresh air, that's all.'
'Do you want me to accompany you?' Chan asked.
'No, sweetheart, you can stay,' Azula said. 'I won't be gone for too long.'
As she walked away, she could hear her mother's voice. 'They make such a nice couple.'
Azula left the restaurant, feeling the colder evening air on her skin. She started to walk faster, wanting to create as much distance between herself and the restaurant. She eventually started to run, away from those people that seemed to symbolise her entire world, her entire future.
It didn't seem like a very bright future.
Azula kept running until she reached the very end of the ship. She stopped to grab the railing, looking out over the sea. She could feel the cold, but it didn't bother her. She was firebender - she could heat herself at will.
It was beautiful, she had to admit it. The full moon was reflected on the water and Azula could see more stars than she could see on the Fire Nation, since there was a lot less light here.
In a nation full of firebenders, there was always a lightsource present.
Azula kept staring at the water. Cold and unforgiving, but also predictable. If she fell into the water, no one would find her again and she would die.
She would die before her engagement party with Chan, planned only a few days after they had returned to the capital. She would die as herself - as a fiere princess, not as 'the wife of'.
She would be free. In the spirit world, everyone was equal, Iroh had once told her.
Azula hadn't noticed she had held her breath, but she know released it, extinguishing the small torches around her.
It was now completely dark.
Azula pulled up her dress, enabling her to step on the railing. She was so clumsy in these ridiculous clothes, she might actually fall. She climbed over the railing, placing her feet on the lowest bar on the outside of the ship.
She only had to jump - and she would know peace.
Azula stretched her arms, ready to jump.
'Wait.'
She almost let go of sheer shock.
'Who are you?' she asked.
'My name's Sokka,' the boy said. Azula couldn't see a lot with just the light of the moon, but he seemed to be a few years older than she was.
'I don't know why I asked that - I don't care who you are. Just leave me alone,' Azula said.
'I… don't think that's a good idea.'
Azula huffed. 'I don't care what you think.'
She noticed that he tried to come closer. 'Stay where you are. Don't come any closer - or I'll let go.'
He raised his arms in a gesture of surrender. 'Fine. What's your name?'
There was no way she was going to tell him that.
'I was actually handling some pretty important business here, so if you could leave me to it...'
There was a short silence.
'I am from the Watertribe,' he suddenly said. Azula frowned, not having expected him to start telling her his life story.
'I'm used to the cold,' Sokka said. 'But even to me, the winter's there are extremely harsh. That's why we try to hunt a lot in the autumn, to make sure we have some supplies for when there's a true storm and we have to stay inside. My dad and I always went icefishing…'
Azula's looked at him questingly, not understanding why he was telling her this. If he tried her from stopping to jump, telling her boring stories was no way to make her climb back…
'Icefishing is…' Sokka started.
'I know what icefishing is!' she interrupted him.
'Sorry,' Sokka said. 'You don't seem like the… nevermind. So one time, I wasn't careful enough and I fell in a hole, created by an animal. And I can tell you - the water was so cold. It felt like millions of knives entering your body…'
Azula looked at him. She hadn't thought about that. She wasn't too afraid of pain, but as a Firebender, she didn't enjoy the cold. She hated it, to be frank.
'So that's why I'm not looking forward to having to jump after you,' Sokka continued.
'Don't be so stupid,' Azula said. 'The fall alone will probably kill you.'
'Only if you're lucky,' Sokka responded. 'It will hurt, I won't deny it - but not nearly as much as that water.'
Azula looked at him. She prided herself on being good at reading people and he seemed very genuine, even if she was quite sure he couldn't be that stubborn.
'I was actually hoping you would spare me that,' he said.
He was so close she could actually see the colour of his eyes now. They were blue - but not icy blue, the colour of the ocean near the Fire Nation capital on a summer day.
She had never seen anyone with that colour before. It was beautiful.
'Come on,' Sokka said. 'You don't really want to do it.'
'What do you know about what I want?' Azula asked. 'You don't know me.'
'If you really wanted to die, you would've jumped already,' Sokka said. 'What you want is a solution for your problems.'
Azula wanted to retort, but she realised he was right. She hesitantly exchanged her hand towards him.
His face lit up in a happy grin. He truly was very handsome, Azula thought, as he helped her to turn, so they faced each other right now.
'Sokka,' he said. 'But I believe I already introduced myself.'
Azula smiled.
'I guess you're not going to tell me your name?' he asked.
'Not a chance,' she whispered and Sokka smiled.
'Come on,' he said.
Azula placed her foot on the next sport of the railings, but she had forgotten about her ridiculous dress.
The fabric was beneath her feet, making her slip. If it weren't for Sokka, she would've fallen.
The sea that seemed to be her only solution minutes ago, was no beneath her, cold and menacing, a horrible death.
'Hold on!' Sokka said.
Azula's heart was racing on her throat. She wouldn't go like this. She suddenly realised Sokka had been right - she wouldn't have jumped. She had some many things she wanted to do, to accomplish.
Being here, she now realised all her problems could've been solved.
No, she wouldn't die today.
Azula grabbed one of the sports, pulling herself up. Sokka made a surprised sounds as he helped her over the railing.
'You're strong,' he said, looking at her in surprise.
'Yes, I am.'

'I wanted to thank you, for what you did,' Azula said. She wasn't someone who thanked people a lot, but that was mostly because she didn't often have a reason to.
With Sokka, it was different. She wanted to see him again, no matter what and if that meant thanking him… it wasn't that difficult, she had realised. Because she meant it.
'Any time,' Sokka responded.
Azula looked at him and suddenly felt the need to defend herself. Because for one reason or another, she cared about what he thought about her. 'Look, I know what you must be thinking… poor little rich girl, what does she know about being unhappy?'
'That was not what I was thinking,' Sokka responded. 'What I was thinking was - why does this girl think there's no hope left.'
Azula stared at ime. He seemed so genuine, so truly interested in her. No one ever asked her what she wanted.
'I…' She hesitated before she showed him her engagement ring.
'Wow, that thing's huge,' Sokka said. 'You would've sank right away.'
Azula send him an annoyed look.
'If you don't want to marry the guy, don't marry him,' Sokka said. 'Easy as that.'
Azula couldn't help a small chuckle. 'You truly have no idea who I am, don't you?' she asked him.
'Of course I do, Princess Azula,' Sokka said. 'But that doesn't matter - if you don't love him, you shouldn't have to marry him, royalty or not.'
'Well, it must be nice to live in a world like that…' Azula mumbled.
Sokka looked at her with worry.
'Aren't you supposed to hate me? Water Tribe and Fire Nation? Fire and water and all?'
'I don't believe in that,' Sokka responded, but Azula could tell he was lying.
'Why don't you come to dinner with me, tonight?' she asked him without thinking. 'I bet my mother would be delighted to meet a watertribe member.'
It was bit impulsive, but it would make for an interesting evening, Azula figured.

'You don't want to stay with the women, do you?' one of the generals asked Sokka.
'No, I think I'll have to return to my deck soon,' Sokka said.
'Good idea,' Chan said. 'We talk about politics and warfare - nothing of interest for an artist just like yourself.'
'Do you really need to go?' Azula asked him as Sokka stood up.
'I'm afraid this fairytale has to end,' Sokka said. He took Azula's hand and pressed a soft kiss on it, much to her mother's distress.
When he retreated his hand, Azula could feel paper. She tried to hide her shocked face. Sokka looked at her repeatedly as he left the restaurant.
Make it count. Meet me at the clock.
Azula told her mother she would retreat as well. When she saw Sokka, he smiled. 'Ready for a real party?' he asked.
Azula had never danced like that. It wasn't suitable for a princess. But the people here didn't know she was a princess - or they were too drunk to care. So she laughed and danced and for the first time in her life, she could imagine a future that wasn't filled with either war and politics or children and an unloving husband.

'You'll be my wife and you'll honour me as a wife should honour a husband. I don't care if you're royalty - I'll be as well! And you'll be a good wife to me.'
Or else? You're not even a firebender, Azula thought.

'Sokka - I can't see you anymore. I don't want to see you anymore. I am a Fire Nation, you are a Water Tribe peasant. Leave me alone.'

'I changed my mind.'
Azula took a deep breath as she looked at Sokka. 'They said you might be up here…'
'Shh…'
She looked at him, scared. Was this a refusal - did he want nothing to do with her after what she had said to him?
Water Tribe peasant, she had called him.
'Give me your hand.'
Azula couldn't stop a small smile from spreading over her face as she took his hand. He softly pulled her closer. Their noses almost touched.
'Now close your eyes,' he said, smiling goofily. Azula wondered if he was going to kiss her.
She had never been kissed.
'Go on,' he said softly.
Azula closed her eyes, still smiling slightly. She expected to feel his lips any moment now, but instead he placed a hand on her back and led her forward.
'Place your foot on the first railing. Keep your eyes close. Don't peak.'
'I'm not!' Azula said.
'Do you trust me?'
Azula had never trust anyone before. People always lied to hear, betrayed her, told her things to gain her favour. It's why she had become so good at reading people.
With Sokka, she didn't feel the need to second-guess his intentions.
'I trust you,' she said and she meant it, fully, without hidden meanings.
His hands travelled to hers and he placed them in the , making them stretch as if she was a bird. 'Now, open your eyes,' he whispered in her ear as he placed his hands on her waist.
Azula opened her eyes and gasped. She was in the air, wind blowing her hair away from her face and hitting her arms and chest. She had never been so high up, had never been so free.
She had never been so happy, not since her childhood anyway.
'I'm an airbender,' she said without thinking.
Sokka chuckled.
'Maybe we can visit them, one day.'
Azula turned her head to look at him. 'When the ship docks… I'm getting off with you,' she said.
Sokka's eyes and grin widened. 'That's insane.'
Insane, and unprepared and foolish.
'I know,' she said.
She had never done such a thing in her life. She had always been a perfect little princess… and look where it would've gotten her.
'That's why I trust it.'
