They set out to immortalize the pure beauty of flowers, faithfully and without thought for the self—and found themselves returning to the roots of their series.
This fifth volume in Encyclopedia of Flowers, the series that has been Azuma Makoto and Shiinoki Shunsuke’s consuming passion for more than a decade, was produced over a two-year period coinciding with the onset and devastation of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the midst of their work, the floral-artist-and-photographer pair encountered a book about the origins of traditional ikebana that took up a group of monks in fifteenth-century Kyoto who, during a horrific famine, not only provided warm porridge and shelter but also arranged flowers to give people comfort and hope for the future. Moved by this episode and its resonances with the state of the world today, the authors, too, grew convinced that the one thing that they could—nay, should—do now was to go back to the roots of their art and offer flowers up for people through the pages of their book. Those offerings are presented in a format updated from previous volumes, with larger pages and almost complete lay-flat binding for an even more dynamic appreciative experience.
Floral artist Azuma Makoto held his first overseas solo show in New York and continues to exhibit highly experimental works primarily in Europe. In 2009 he established the Azuma Makoto Kaju Kenkyujo (AMKK) botanical lab, through which he presents projects around the world as part of his unique pursuit of plants and their beauty.
Shiinoki Shunsuke began botanical photography at the same time that Azuma embarked on his artistic career. In partnership with Azuma, he has dedicated himself to capturing the forms of life as they shift in aspect from moment to moment.

Art & Design: Azuma Makoto’s Temporary Sculptures Freeze Hundreds of Flowers on a Snow-Coated Lake
— February 22, 2023 | Kate Mothes

On a frozen lake in the Notsuke Peninsula, a tendril of land that juts out from Hokkaido’s east coast, acclaimed floral artist Azuma Makoto (previously) has constructed the third botanical sculpture in an ongoing series called Frozen Flowers. The first edition was composed in this same location in 2019 and again in 2021, and every year, the conditions have been a little bit different. The artist is interested in how variables like temperature, wind, or snowfall can alter the surrounding environment and make every version unique.
Tumblr media
An important facet of Makoto’s practice is working alongside and adapting to nature and striking a collaborative balance so that he’s neither trying to control it nor controlled by it. Arranged on a scaffold and surrounded by a field of snow, bunches of flowers and foliage in a range of colors and textures are doused with water before they solidify into thousands of icicles. The artist and a team of assistants worked through the night, waiting until temperatures were at their lowest so that the ice would form quickly. The following morning, the sun revealed the finished composition, and by design, ultimately melted it.
Tumblr media
Through the seasons, Makoto sees how the area transforms and over time has witnessed the effects of climate change on the peninsula. He aims to continue installing new versions of the icy blooms for years to come in order to document the ever-evolving environment. Find more of his work on his website and on Instagram.

AMKK (“Azuma Makoto, Kaju Kenkyujo”) are a group of floral and botanical experimenters fronted by artist Makoto Azuma and photographer Shunsuke Shiinoki. The multimedia art collective dives beyond the superficial outward magnificence of flowers, submerging into their endless lifecycle of birth, decay and reawakening.
This 3.5 minute animated video titled “Story of Flowers” is a valorisation of nature’s mystical laws of life and death using flowers as the main character while oscillating through various undertones that touch upon the inconsequentiality of a fleeting human existence.
