Okay Azutoph though would be chaos. Like Toph teaching Azula the glorious fun of insurance fraud and property destruction and not caring about rules, and Azula’s extensive knowledge about how to do all those things in even more elaborate, scheming ways. Both of them together being so overpowered it isn't even fair. The sheer disregard for authority they don't agree with, and even those they do.

Azutoph could be interesting, but I've never really seen it done well. There are potential similarities you could draw on, but the connections aren't so obvious in canon.

So I have joked many times in the past that I'd like Aang to have a harem, but they are just jokes with a dash of sincerity to them. To be serious for a moment:

In order to get to a point in her life where she can be in a healthy, loving relationship, Azula needs a lot of time to heal on her own first. Even then, starting a relationship would be hard for her because she has a history of trust issues, abandonment issues, being unable to let down her walls around other people, and guilt over a lifetime of manipulating others. All of these things are issues that she'd have to address in order to start dating anyone.

The big question for this ship is "is it a 2+1 situation or a 1+1+1 situation?"

Aang and Toph have a long history together. She was his earthbending teacher, he was her first friend. Taang would be a couple that bloomed after years, maybe even over a decade, of friendship. That's something that Azula doesn't have with either of them, and that would certainly be on her mind if she started interacting with both of them on a regular basis in either a taang+azula or a aang+toph+azula situation. Even if she starts developing feelings for both of them, do they reciprocate? What does Azula bring to their lives that isn't already brought by each other? Aang could forgive Azula for almost killing him, but could Toph? I've never been in a throuple or a polycule, so I can't speak from experience on any of these questions.

Aang joining azutoph or Toph joining azulaang has its own questions to work out. Azula strikes me, even after therapy, of being a territorial person (Toph too, to a lesser extent). No one messes or infringes on who and what is hers, and that extends to relationships. Would she be offput by taang's past relationship changing her relationship with Toph/Aang? How would she handle being with one and then developing additional feelings for the other?

I'm not saying a good writer couldn't make azutaang work, but they would have to do a lot of work in planning it out and carefully developing it through a good story in order to make it believable.

thinkin about road to redemption azula being allowed to come to dinner with zuko and the gaang since mai and ty lee are out of town and combined the remaining six can take her since her bending has been really weak lately

and she's kind of traipsing behind zuko, eyes on the floor, not saying anything but definitely listening to the conversations people are having. aang tries to include her bc as much as everyone is wary of her, azula's still a kid like them. unfortunately his "right, azula?"s don't draw her in and seem to just make her uncomfortable, so aang figures she just needs more time and just tries to watch for if she needs anything.

it's actually toph that gets her to crack. azula knows she's blind, but somehow this goblin is staring straight into her eyes. every time azula looks at her, she's looking back, and she pulls a face when katara says something azula thinks is stupid and it takes So Much to not laugh since she's trying to make a good impression. toph keeps pulling faces and slowly azula's smile can't be contained.

and then sokka notices her smiling- not that mean one she used to do- and calls her on it. she stumbles through explaining that toph was being funny, and toph flat out denies it with a mischievous grin clear on her face. sokka comes in with the "aw toph azula has a crush on you" and azula is finally there, present, engaged even if she's defending herself from sokka and toph's jokes at her expense. (katara dutifully keeps her mouth shut and has a side convo with suki). the conversation moves on with her a part of it after that, and later as they leave and start off on their separate ways- the gaang to the palace and azula to her facility for a therapeutic debrief- toph punches sokka's arm and azula catches him saying "nice work toph" with that stupid smile on his face when he looks back at zuko and azula walking together.

toph falls back and offers to walk azula to the facility because she knows a little bit of what it feels like to be watched by a personal entourage 24/7, and on the way there they get to know each other and they briefly lose azula's guards in a market so toph can buy her the fried komodo-dragon on a stick she'd been craving for the past few weeks.

when they get to where azula needs to be, toph squeezes her shoulder and smiles at her. "y'know, you're not so bad, hotstuff."

"aren't you usually more creative with your little pet names?"

"eh, you liked it though." and azula did, bc she maybe has a friend now who isn't scared of her and tries to make her laugh, and it's startling, the easy way toph talks to her.

anyway, toph is azula's friend and is really important to her rehabilitation and i think that's neat

hi! i'm not the best user in this site. sorry for the late answer lol i do have some hc :D

i like to think that the rest of the gaang is suspicious about azula. but not toph. she just 'oh idc, she's neat. i'm gonna do crimes and be mean with her'. when they realize, they're kissing.

about their dynamic. i like to think that they're not picky about words. they just say what they want to say. that leads to spicy interactions and i love it.

there's more but i'd like to talk about them with time. i write sometimes. i'll try to use this app with more frequency lol

i wish tophzula (azutoph?) was more popular... or at least talked about either platonic or romantic. i think, as adults, toph would be good for azula... i see a lot of future atla fan content where azula is being pitied mid/post redemption for her childhood and breakdown and i think azula would hate that pity but toph wouldnt offer her that at all, she wouldnt waste any time being brutally blunt with a nice playful mix of sarcasm that azula would probably prefer over pity or sadness abt her situation, toph wouldnt treat her like shes fragile! (also i love the idea of them going back-and-forth, teasing each other and being playfully rude to one another)
