tell me your unpopular opinions about ted lasso! (i.e i think the folksy charm gets a bit annoying sometimes and also the kid playing henry is way too old to be whatever age henry is actually supposed to be)

oh boy okay hmm....

i think the zava plotline was largely unnecessary and didn't offer much because jamie understanding total football and guiding his team was enough to show us his growth

though i'm a roykeeley girlie and i am really glad they wound up back together, i was OVERJOYED to see keeley have an actual relationship with a woman. even just hooking up with her onscreen was enough for me, but the fact that we got to see it??? TANGIBLE proof she is wlw?? i was in awe. (i'm kinda pissed jack turned out shitty but it did give us keeley's relationship with barbara which i do also think is really special & wish we saw more of)

i actually loved the coach beard episode last season and thought it was a really fun change of pace (and a great background for all of us to understand more of what he says now and like, how committed he is to his wild life)

idk if this is unpopular but i'ma say it. i really believe ted and rebecca are spectacular foils of each other and have an incredibly special bond. i am desperate for it to become romantic because i genuinely believe they would be an amazing power couple. i also understand she's his boss and in real life, power dynamics are icky. but this is fiction and in this case i am willing to look past that. like, an american football coach is coaching a british football team with no prior knowledge of the sport. there's some suspension of disbelief we have to do for this show and since we've seen that ted seems to be unafraid of the power rebecca has over him anyway, i am rooting for them romantically. full respect for folks who don't! but god i love the idea of them together SO much.

1. Tell us about your current project(s) - what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

the project i SHOULD be working on is my novel (though i haven’t been doing a whole lot of writing in it lately; most of my writing has been in other random fun things no one will see), which is a futuristic(ish) sci-fi romp about a cyborg who doesn’t know she’s a cyborg (kestrel), a human who gets drawn into helping her (rowan), and a powerful person (ARE they a person??) who manages to start a robot apocalypse. 

there’s way more to it than that, of course - for instance, my cyborg was created as a military weapon to fight militarized robots, but she doesn’t know that at the point the story starts - but i recently did an overhaul of my first draft because it really didn’t feel like the right direction to take even the beginning of the story.

i love the characters the most, which is a pretty common theme for me. characters are always what drive my story. i especially love rowan and kestrel’s relationship. they develop this very specific bond, the kind of found-family, tight-knit closeness and trust that only comes from surviving something terrible together and only being able to rely on each other. they are soulmates in a very particular kind of way, and it takes them a while to realize that. i’m really excited to write it all out

4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)

i have 2 sentences:

Cassiel is his only stopping point, the only arrest to his momentum, draped in pearl and watching him with a gaze the only shade of blue he ever seems to drown in. 

He keeps watching them even as he’s kicked into the hole, no longer an angel, not really anything else, and thinks about wax wings and burning as he free-falls out of the only place he’s ever known, unable to muster up any feelings aside from Good riddance.

the lines came from a series of oneshots about one of my characters that i wrote as a challenge to myself. each one is focused on a color (this one is white) because i usually write in a very grounded way, not particularly poetic or flower but rather more about actions, and these were meant to be written in that flowery way. i like these lines in particular because i feel like they encapsulate a really nice, specific combination of description and emotion and i’m proud of how they come across.

14. At what point in writing do you come up with a title?

it really depends on the story. sometimes i will write the whole thing without coming up with something. i have a lot of placeholder titles using song lyrics or parts of a poem (a habit i formed from reading fanfiction titles, lol) that i then make a title from, and sometimes i just throw words at it and see what sticks. i have a story called “reasons why handcuffs are not ricky’s kink” because it starts off with ricky getting handcuffed to someone at a party, but it’s not really kinky at all, and it’s about their relationship rather than any smut or whatever, but i needed a title for my google doc. then there are other stories i figure out a title for really early on and i manage to stick to it. tl;dr it really depends on the story and how many ideas i have at the beginning, and if/how much the story changes along the way

16. Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)

honestly not really. the only really new thing i guess i could say i have is a kirkspock fic i barely started a handful of months ago? i always got really intimidated by writing spock bc i’ve read a LOT of ks fics and people are so incredibly talented and specific and i didn’t want to do it wrong. i haven’t made very much progress (i have 1 page so far) but i’d like to try! i have mostly only written stevebucky so i hope to finish it eventually.

19. Is there something you always find yourself repeating in your writing? (favourite verb, something you describe ‘too often’, trope you can’t get enough of?)

oh my god. always. i feel like when i write i forget 80% of my vocabulary. if i can read all the words and understand them, why do they never come to mind when i’m writing?? i’m definitely a culprit of the like, “the ghost/echo of a smile” on someone’s face a lot, probably also “a flush creeps up his neck,” and plenty more. i think there are descriptions i wind up recycling in most things i write. i usually know when i’m using whatever it is that i use it a lot but hopefully even though i repeat myself they’re far enough away to not be noticeable!

24. Would you say your writing has changed over time?

1000%. i have definitely learned a lot from reading such a wide variety of people’s writing styles and finding choices i wanted to emulate or things i wanted to do better in my own writing. i am constantly learning and trying to improve, and though it’s hard to explain exactly how, i can definitely tell my writing is getting better. i improved my dialogue tenfold when i took a playwriting class, too, and really learned about how dialogue should feel natural. it helped me in how it felt to write dialogue alongside making the dialogue sound better.

What’s the Rwrb treatment

removing what makes some of the characters so special (particularly with things like alex’s journey with his identity as the son of divorced parents & being mexican american & his adhd & his journey to accepting himself as a bisexual man, alongside bea’s struggle with addiction, more of henry’s struggles as someone who isn’t ashamed to be who he is but buckles beneath the weight of expectation), shoving side characters to the complete background and using them as accessories more than characters that mattered (did pez even HAVE LINES), removing important characters entirely (june!!! rafael luna!!!), completely destroying the pace — i read the book twice and even i couldn’t follow the development of their relationship in the film. it moved SO FAST and i was like… these two are obvs horny for each other, but falling in love? where?

i was really upset and mad about the film but tbh my wonderful friend cossette said it in a more eloquent way here

it felt so… shallow, to me. i didn’t feel any heart in the film at all. and it made me sad.

i know lots of people enjoyed it, and to that i say: good for them! i’d rather watch a film i enjoy than one that really upsets me any day. but i was not an enjoyer of it and my beef with the film is, unfortunately, long-lasting.

(however, i have some incredibly talented friends/mutuals who are making gifs and graphics from it, which i will happily share all the ding-dang day!)

ok it’s maybe because i’m currently obsessed with it but honestly “can’t catch me now” by olivia rodrigo is like. TOP tier. it has everything i like about music - gorgeous harmonies, melodic builds, lyrics that scratch at your brain… god it’s so fucking good

hmmm i think yes but i cant remember to save my life 😭 i feel like there was a movie relatively recently but it has escaped me. typically if i love something i will reconsume it eventually, regardless of how difficult it was to experience

orin the red, maybe? she’s so fucking cool. she’s the spawn of the god of murder and she like, licks her knives and wants to skin people. she’s a murderous freak. i don’t see nearly enough people talking about how much she rules

nutmeg - how’s your room/home decorated? do you have a specific theme or style going on?

with stuff that makes me happy! no theme. i have the tlou2 stop sign with the firefly logo spray painted on it, a letter board that’s said “you are going to be amazing” since the day i got it, an amazing spiderman canvas of vintage spidey comics that i got for free after working a convention, a homemade earrings holder, and a corkboard full of pictures and tiny art boards my friend made me and signed postcards and stuff. it’s all stuff that brings me joy to see. ☺️

honestly by voice alone i want to say rachel zegler (and ive been rooting for her back since she just posted singing videos) but i think she deserves it! i’m so proud of her success for such a young age and i think she’s so incredibly talented 💛

18. a memorable meal this year?

oooooh this is a tough one bc i don’t remember much aside from recently shflsjfkf but i THINK this year was when my mom introduced me to this new sandwich place & this sandwich that changed my life. it’s turkey + sprouts + tomatoes + cream cheese + i always add avocado (it’s more like guacamole) on squaw bread and it’s so 🤌🏻🤌🏻 like i always forget how good it actually is until i bite into it

ooooohhh okay i will try to be concise but i can have lots of things to say lol

shows:

the good place - i just love this show. it's about ethics and morality and also choosing to be good to others. and it's funny. what's not to love??

elementary - elementary is like a warm blanket i wear. it was the first show i ever started watching when it premiered and stayed on top of for the entire time it was airing. sherlock & joan are literally everything to me and i fell off my rewatch at the last season bc i didn't want it to end (again)

ted lasso - this one is pretty self-explanatory but much like the good place, it's about kindness and being good to others and it's hilarious. whenever i feel like shit i rewatch the christmas episode from s2 lol

movies:

the princess diaries 1 & 2 - i just love these movies so much. the humor in them is so good!!! i missed so much when i was younger. they're just as funny, if not funnier, as an adult now. maybe they're comforting bc of the nostalgia but i just love how familiar they feel

into the spider-verse - if i want to be entertained by a Quality Film, this is what i'll watch. when i saw it in theaters i wanted to see it again and when i bought it i watched it and then literally started it over to immediately watch it again. it's just phenomenal and i love every second, every frame. this movie has a special pedestal in my heart next to peeta mellark

captain america: the winter soldier - aside from movies i watched as a kid, this may be the film i've seen the most. i just think it's great. the music is so special, the pacing is perfect, and the dynamics between everyone.... this was top-tier moviemaking, particularly for marvel, bc it was before every mcu movie felt quite so formulaic.

video games:

animal crossing - i kind of don't want to count new horizons in this bc it doesn't feel the same but i spent soooo much time playing ac games on my nintendo ds lite and my 3ds. i just love going into the games to talk to all my adorable ass villagers.

the last of us part ii - so this kind of comes with a caveat. i only count this if i skip all the cutscenes. i really really like how the gameplay feels so sometimes i'll just hop into chapters or combat encounters to mess around bc i know exactly how they'll go and i challenge myself to harder difficulties (or just go OP with all the cheats on). the content itself throughout the story isn't particularly comforting sldfjksdfl

skyrim - i have a tough time playing it these days (i just got it again and am playing for the first time in like 10 years) because of motion sickness stuff that hurts my eyes but i love skyrim so much. this was the first huge open-world game i ever really loved and i credit this one and portal 2 for kind of opening the door to gaming for me.

portal 2 - i can't go without mentioning this one bc even though i haven't been able to play it in a LONG time bc i have it on xbox 360 and my laptop can't run it, this game is the first game i remember REALLY loving. it's so special to me. i don't remember how many times i played through it but i know it was at least twice if not 3 times, which is a lot for me as a teenager. it's a quality game with really clever levels, fantastic voice acting, hilarious lines, and a really fun style of play.
