This was originally going to be in reply to @glowinggreeneyes-e post about the Captain's education and career path...but then I got carried away because I'm so normal about this stuff so it's now its own post...with added angst because I have no control over any of this, my brain just goes.
So for a start the Captain would have gone to a public boarding school. I think it's worth pointing out that public schools and universities operated scholarships for students from less wealthy backgrounds. We're still talking middle class and upper middle, but not always full on wealthy and privileged in the way of someone like Julian. Cap strikes me as having the background of a family well enough off but he probably always had to work hard to prove himself for his place, maybe not so much for public school but definitely for university.
Whatever school he attended would have had an Officer Training Corps junior division. Basically cadets. This would lead to the possibility to do an exam (written and practical) to get what was called certificate A to show he had participated in the OTC.
From the Button House Archives it says Cap got to the front in WW1 at armistice and so never saw action. So I imagine he finished his studies at school in the summer, enlisted and completed basic training, and then was out to Europe just in time for things to end. Because he got his certificate A at school he had the option at university to join the OTC university division. This was a route to becoming a commissioned officer. You either needed certificate A or experience in the ranks to join. For the sake of argument, serving in the army for a couple of months wouldn't count as experience so he must have had the certificate A...
University options at that time were limited to Oxbridge, Durham or London. All of those had OTC. I think London can be ruled out...only because it was busy, loud and ugly, even then (sorry London friends!) and the Captain likes wildlife and the countryside and nature walks...I can't see him thriving in London.
Training with the OTC at university involved physical training, military strategy, history and law etc. The Captain would have had to complete 2 years training before he could have done exams for his Certificate B - practical and written. Passing the exams would have entitled him to a commission on graduation. Getting Certificate B wasn't common because of the amount of work involved and dedication required to be successful. It was hard!
Like I want to point out that to get that far would have required so much effort and dedication right from being a child. And this is where I will get sad and headcanon-y for a bit (let me have this one thing out of all this research!)
Bullying and abusive rituals were a big part of public school life at this time and any boy seen as even slightly different would have been targeted for sure, even by some of the teachers. So although Cap comes across as clever and capable at what he knows I think school would have been socially really freaking hard. For a child in that situation I could see the OTC being a respite and something the Captain would have found very comforting with the set rules, order and expectations and from there you can understand why career army would have been appealing...
And I think that's when things get a bit complicated. The army was his life but in a different way to officers who wanted to be on the front line, like Havers. Obviously Cap worked extremely hard for his commission - and he was obviously very well qualified and knowledgable in his areas of interest, but he was always ever going to be best at HQ tasks like intelligence or engineering or whatever his particular career skills were - loving the army in theory, but some of it would have always been out of his reach. And I think being in a public school during WW1 and hearing of so many former pupils (some he would have known personally as seniors, prefects or head of houses) losing their lives on a daily basis during WW1 would have had a huge effect on him and probably influenced some of the guilt about not having the opportunity to fight himself, but ultimately I think he probably knew that wasn't his part to play even with WW2.
And I think all that that shows in his interactions we see in his past as CO - he was obviously doing a good job at whatever secret little operations he had but he really didn't have the skills/personality needed to be a CO. Having someone like Havers as a second hid that (and that's also seen in Havers getting 2 promotions in 4 years...he was much more of a natural CO) and I wonder if a lot of affection that Cap had for Havers originally came from the fact that Havers not only respected him as CO but he was also just kind to him and saw a person worthy of affection - rather than the CO that everyone tolerated but secretly disrespected and laughed at (just look at how all the other officers couldn't wait to come down on him in 5.05)
And then he lost Havers. But still had to command up to 150 men and operations at Button House for the next 4 years. And it's obvious from the letters and information in the Button House Archives that he really REALLY did try and I think with considering everything it's no wonder he overcompensates a lot and that's where he's at in the first couple of seasons of Ghosts; fighting for authority and trying to do his best.
Last sad point because it does relate: When he died Havers gave Cap the swagger stick to hold - Havers still called him 'Sir' even though he outranked him at that point. I don't know if I can begin to unpick all of that, but there's definitely something in there about respect, belief and the burden of responsibility that he clearly took seriously into his afterlife not wanting to let Havers down both personally and professionally.
If you read all of this I love you and respect you and appreciate you for appreciating my level of not normal xD

Mission/ Rank
Naruto Military System
Disclaimer
As a Naruto fan and a former member of the Armed forces the way the Ninja military is handled makes no sense. Now I understand that Kishimoto has no experience with the military and that it would slow the story a lot by having it be like a real military and not a village of mercenaries.
______________________________________________________________
Mission Selection
Due to the amount of shinobi and the security risk to the hokage. Any mission under an A Rank will be assigned by the Parent Ninja Division admission center.
Deployment
These are not considered as individual missions as the ninja are stationed for a long period of time at a different location such as a boarder deployment or a disaster relief deployments. Deployments usually last between 4 months to a whole year.

Chunnin LVL Missions

To AWWA
I’ve been using AWWA since it’s I Am Eva days and I have no regrets. In fact, you should probably have no regrets with period undies (period briefs guide/must knows blog post to come) but I have around 6 pairs of these and they make a huge difference to your zero-waste period life.
I have some cotton briefs, synthetic briefs, the swimwear brief and a waterproof bag - yes, the lot. I have used them for years so feel like I can definitely review them (I always give things a good crack before reviewing them). I couldn’t rave about the cotton briefs more. I wish this was an option when I first bought these undies as they are so light, comfy, and soft. Sometimes I forget that I’m wearing period undies! The briefs (both synthetic and cotton) keep you feeling really dry if you free-flow. I personally have found the synthetic briefs wear out a bit quicker, can feel stretched, and are just not as comfortable as the cotton pairs (but still fairly comfortable). I’ve never used their heavy period brief on my heavy days, so I can’t comment on that but on my lighter days, these work a charm!
Plus it’s super cruisy to clean. I take it into the shower with me, wash it with cold water (you know at the start of the shower when you’re waiting for the water to get warm, that’s the time to wash it!) and then it goes straight into the wash.
The AWWA waterproof bag is super handy for when you’re travelling/camping and can’t get to a washing machine ASAP. The bag also doubles up as great storage for wet togs. Speaking of which, I’ve worn the swimsuit bottoms at the end of my cycle a couple of times. While I’ve never actually bled in them so can’t review if they work well or not, it was nice knowing I had that layer of protection. It’s probably not as comfy as your usual togs but it does serve a greater purpose so we can look past that.
Now the question you’re probably dying to ask - how ethical are they? Yes they prevent disposable period products from entering our landfill (which in of itself is massive) but aside from that, are they actually sustainable and ethical? In my opinion, yes! AWWA are transparent about their supply chain (as seen on each of the brief’s page) and note if the factories are certified (such as with GOTS which measures if the product is organic, and Oeko-Tex which is also a textile assessor, but I’ll be honest with you, I need to learn more about these certifications). Materials used are either recycled nylon or organic cotton, and the company is carbon positive, meaning they have offset 120% of their carbon footprint according to EKOS. That’s pretty impressive! In terms of labour, I am aware that the undies are made in Sri Lanka and that the AWWA team visit the factory often but that’s as much as I know. In saying that, AWWA are Certified B Corp which will answer a few questions you may have about that.
I do have a couple of warnings though. Firstly, these undies will stain decently from blood - it’s just a fact of life for us women and you’ll adjust to it. Secondly, if you’re a VPL (visible panty line) hater, this probably isn’t your vibe. The lines are visible through my pants and are pretty prominent BUT you can now get period thongs that solve this problem. In saying that, the quality of these undies make up for that and leave you not caring about the VPL because your monthly has just become so much easier to manage. They don’t smell, you don’t feel wet and gross, and to be honest, sometimes I forget I’m still bleeding (this is in the end days of my period when the cramps have stopped doing their thing. Trust me, I know when I’m on my period at the start!).
I do want to note that I personally think they do overshoot with how much blood they can hold. Maybe I’m heavier than the norm, but I have a moderate pair and I’d only use it on my light days. I’ve definitely leaked through this pair on my more moderate days. A friend of mine has also found it to be the same but though that may be the case, the AWWA team are really receptive to feedback. If you have questions or concerns, they are really responsive and willing to try to make something work for you. I have a peer that has struggled to find a pair of undies to accommodate their flow and AWWA have been really responsive and supportive of helping her find the right pair so all in all - a top quality team and an ace company!
Me te aroha xx

Israel Air Force lands 11 F-35I fighters after F-35B jet accident in the USA
The Air Force will inspect its "Adir" version to rule out the possibility of a repeated malfunction

The Israeli Air Force announced on Sunday that it will follow the recommendations of the Joint Program Office (JPO) and land 11 of its F-35I "Adir" stealth fighters.
This occurs after an F-35B Lightning II suffered an accident on December 15 during a failed landing attempt at a Texas air base during a test flight. The pilot ejected safely.
Tumblr media
“From the discoveries and information transmitted, it was found that the aircraft require a dedicated inspection to rule out the possibility of a repeated malfunction in the Israeli version,” the Israeli Air Force statement said.
"The Israeli Air Force will analyze the findings of the accident investigation and recommend how to return the aircraft to flight safely."
The Jerusalem Post reported that both the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the manufacturer of the F-35, Lockheed Martin, added that it is not certain that the Israeli F-35 has a similar potential malfunction. The grounding decision was taken with great caution.
Tumblr media
The Israeli F-35I is based on the F-35A, for conventional takeoffs and landings. Variant B, used by the U.S. Marine Corps and other nations, allows short takeoff and vertical landing, including in aircraft carriers.
In July, the Israeli military stopped its entire F-35 fleet for a week due to a problem related to ejection seats.
Israel agreed to buy at least 50 F-35 jets by 2024, and 36 aircraft have been delivered so far.

Tips for Choosing the Right Eco-Friendly Swag Company
Businesses too have started to incorporate corporate sustainability goals into their promotional efforts. It demonstrates they care for the environment. Distribution of eco-friendly swag is a popular method. However, the choice can be bewildering. It can make choosing the right eco-friendly swag company daunting. Some tips to make this task easier:
Establish the Swag Company’s Eco-Credentials
The first thing is inquiring about the certification the swag company has that can prove their commitment to sustainability. Typically, the company should be able to show you certifications like Fair Trade, Forest Stewardship Council, or B Corp.
You should also check out the materials the eco friendly swag company uses. Look out for sustainable materials like recycled plastics, bamboo, cotton, of biodegradable materials. Check the manufacturing processes. You can find out their adherence to eco-friendly practices such as energy efficiency, low waste production, and ethical labor.
Appraise Product Selection
Look for a swag company with an extensive catalog of sustainable promotional products. The company should be able to offer you just about anything you want across all popular product categories. Ask the company if they will customize the selected swag items with your logo or eco conscious branding. When choosing eco friendly swag, look for items that are practical and usable. It will ensure the recipients will appreciate them and use them. Moreover, high-quality items will last longer, reduce waste, and support your brand values.
Study Packaging and Shipping Practices
You should choose a corporate swag company that focuses on minimal packaging. It should use biodegradable or recycled materials instead of non-recyclable materials and plastics.
Also find out the shipping practices of the company. You should give preference to companies that use eco-friendly shipping methods like carbon-neutral shipping.
Assess Customer Reviews and Testimonials
When evaluating sustainable swag companies, you should invariably find out how customers have rated their products and services. Do not go only by the testimonials provided by the company. You can go online and look at complaint boards or instances of litigation for poor products and services. Reach out their customers and inquire firsthand about the company’s product quality reliability, environmental responsibility, and the quality of customer service. A good indication is the number of companies giving them repeat business.
You should not rely only on the pictures of the swag items in the product catalog. Ask to see samples so you can assess their appearance and quality. Show them around to a panel of employees and potential recipients. Their feedback will let you make an informed decision regarding the quality, usability, and general likeability of the products.
Evaluate the Pricing and Your Budget
Once you have settled on the swag items, you should ask for competitive quotes from the right corporate swag vendors. The price is very important but you should actively consider the quality, eco-friendliness, and options for customization before making your choice. Find out how much discount the company can give on bulk or long-term orders and the credit period.
Conclusion
You should consider various factors like product appropriateness, quality, eco-friendliness, and customer reviews to decide on the company and the swag items. By following these tips, you can select a reputable company that aligns with your sustainability values and delivers high-quality promotional products.

"Slow" fashion movement
Slow fashion? What?
For sure that everyone has heard about the “Slow fashion” term everywhere, at the mall, on social media,... but do we really understand what “Slow fashion” really is? Slow fashion is a relatively new concept in the fashion industry that emerged about 2008 with the goal of promoting sustainability. Clothing manufacturing is slow because there is no intention of overproduction; rather, the goal is to reduce the exploitation of natural resources. Similarly, the consumer must own and use the clothes for a longer period of time, and early replacement is not encouraged. According to Good on you, the slow fashion movement has garnered growing attention in recent years due to consumer demand for increased ethical and sustainable practices. 19% of the most-searched terms associated with rapid fashion are related to ethics, sustainability, and the environment.
Tumblr media
Slow fashion = “Greenwashing” ?
Greenwashing is committed when fashion companies fail to provide substantiating evidence for the environmental claims they make on their labels. This occurs when businesses present themselves as environmentally conscious to the general public while, in reality, continuing to cause environmental damage. Twenty-23 (Abelvik-Lawson)
Major fashion houses guarantee the use of recycled materials, return policies, and recycling initiatives. However, corporations are unable to fulfil these commitments due to the perpetual growth of fashion production. A practice known as "greenwashing" allows businesses to misrepresent their environmental impacts or benefits, which can be deceptive. (Commission of Europe, 2023). 39% of sustainability claims in the textile, apparel, and footwear industries may be false or deceptive, according to a recent screening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What should be done then?
Greenwashing may cause public outrage and legal action, both of which can harm brand reputation and customer loyalty. There are some steps that should be taken to prevent green washing: Support marketing statements with verifiable evidence, such as stop overusing the terms 100% recyclable and 80% biodegradable. Implement sustainability certifications and norms.Sustainability certifications from LEED, B Corp, and Fair Trade USA provide an independent examination of an organization's operations Tech Target (2023).

October’s global theme is ‘endurance’ and we are excited to welcome local creative consultant, multidisciplinary systems thinker, and B Corp Ambassador Kristy O'Leary.
Kristy is a multi-disciplinary creative whose practice has evolved through direct action and activism, multimedia and installation art, advertising and branding, public confidence and social license campaigning, into the world of impact management consulting. Her passion and purpose have coalesced into Decade, a boutique consulting firm with a focus on supporting companies in taking meaningful, tangible, and radical action on climate and social justice issues. She delights in supporting companies in becoming hope spots and helping people transform the mundane into magic. She believes her contribution to building a livable, equitable future is by trojan-horsing capitalism. Giddy up!
Kristy has developed disruptive, future-focused impact plans for companies internationally. She has transformed NIMBY’s into investors, worked with underdogs to transform public opinion from rejection to acceptance, and performed supply chain impact measurement for disruptive agricultural companies in the jungles of Latin. The team at Decade have supported over 150+ companies in redefining how they can leave the world better than they found it and 60+ companies in achieving B Corp certification.
Every month we like to ask our speaker a handful of probing questions to give us a deeper glimpse into their life and relationship with creativity:
How do you define creativity and apply it in your life and career? Working with companies to identify, pluck, and strengthen the threads that tie products and services to purpose, regeneration, and renewal is how my creativity manifests. This work requires an aptitude for both the darkness and the light; each presenting their own unique creative challenges. Creativity makes it possible for us to scenario plan runaway climate change and cascading systems collapse, and have the wherewithal to imagine, design, and actually build regenerative systems that ensure there will indeed be a future. Creativity is more than art and beauty and all those things; it is the ability to look into the darkness and the endurance to create something beautiful and good and necessary. Creativity is relentlessly loving.
Where do you find your best creative inspiration or energy? People and their stories and infinite possibilities. Right in the centre of those three things. I get these butterfly-in-my-chest-moments when people share the truths they have revealed as they deepen their expertise… it’s in those passion spaces, other people’s passion spaces, that’s where I light up. I’m always moving between the present and future tense for folks. My greatest joy is holding up a mirror to them – “Look at your greatness! Take it in. That’s you! That’s what you’re here to do! Now, let’s get to work.”
What’s one piece of creative advice or a tip you wish you’d known as a young person? That creativity and thinking sideways are superpowers.
Who (living or dead) would you most enjoy hearing speak at CreativeMornings? Carl Sagan
How would you describe what you do in a single sentence to a stranger? I help businesses embed social, environmental, and economic justice in their products and services so that every time they turn a dollar, something is left better than they found it.
If you could interview anyone living or dead, but not a celebrity, who would it be and why? Carl Sagan
What myths about creativity would you like to set straight? That creativity is for artists… I work with entrepreneurs and those folks create a lot of something from nothing and sometimes figure out how to embed justice in capitalism. I’ll take an impact business models are radical creativity.
What books made a difference in your life and why? “The World we Made” – we all need a glimpse of a world made better. “The Council of Animals” – I think humans should eventually be judged by the creatures. “Never Let Me Go” – I don’t want to give anything away. “1984” – Do I need to explain this one? “Hillbilly Elegy” – This story hits dangerously close to home.*
If you could open a door and go anywhere, where would that be? The future… obviously…
What music are you listening to these days? Lana Del Ray, Jose Gonzalez, Sault, Sigur Ros, Beck, Michael Nyman, Max Richter, Carol King, Solange, The Weakerthans.
What was the best advice you were ever given? There are three: 1. Never, ever, get good at anything you don’t love. 2. You’ll have three best friends in your life, make one of them your life partner. 3. When you buy quality, you only wince once.
What is the one movie or book every creative must see/read? First, for those needing some inspiration and magic in their lives, “In and of Itself” – Derrick Delgato. You’re welcome. Second, for those trying to steel themselves for an uncertain future and need a taste of the sublime – “Meloncholia”. I’m sorry.
What keeps you awake at night? Late-stage capitalism, climate chaos, perimenopause…

The month of March is full of milestones and celebrations, from March Madness to St. Patrick’s Day to the Vernal Equinox and more. But for all of us at Down to Earth Markets and other B Corp certified organizations, March also means B Corp Month. B Corp Month is an annual event where we join together with other B Corps to share the positive impacts we’ve made over the past year and to articulate our goals for the coming year and beyond.
In case you aren’t familiar with B Corp certification, it’s a designation signifying that a business demonstrates high social and environmental performance, has made a legal commitment to its social performance obligations by changing its corporate governance structure, and exhibits transparency in its impact measurement and reporting. Certified B Corporations are leaders in the global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. Down to Earth Markets is not only mission-driven but committed to demonstrating its impact on our area of focus via this rigorous external certification process.
The theme for B Corp Month this year is This Way Forward. At Down to Earth Markets, we consider B Corp certification to be an ongoing journey, not a finite destination, as we continuously strive to move forward by creating the change we’d like to see in the world and using business as a force for good. Here are some ways in which we are doing that: 1) This Way Forward: Economic Opportunity Down to Earth Markets creates economic opportunity for small scale farmers and food makers by connecting them directly to consumers in nine professionally-run, weekly, community farmers markets in New York City and the Westchester suburbs. We see micro- and small-scale businesses as the preservationists of our rich and eclectic foodways, but also essential to the health of our regional economy. As such, we actively seek out early-stage farms and food entrepreneurs to give them a marketplace entry-point to help jumpstart their businesses.
Down to Earth’s markets act as both incubators and steppingstones by providing venues through which farmers and food makers can reach a wider audience with their products. Our portfolio of farmers markets offers diversity in terms of market profile (size, scalability, location, ambience, and shopper demographics) so that producers can grow along with us as their businesses expand and evolve.
At the heart of our markets are our farmers, who often live in rural, upstate communities that are geographically more isolated and economically challenged. Down to Earth Markets provides an opportunity for these underserved populations, while strengthening our regional food system by providing an alternative to industrial food and creating a viable economy for small-scale farms. 2) This Way Forward: Food Insecurity Here in the United States, more than 44 million people are food insecure, with 1 in 5 children experiencing hunger every day. Down to Earth Markets is a partner in the fight against this widespread and growing food insecurity. We believe that everyone should have access to fresh, nutritious, locally grown food so we ensure that anyone who wants to shop at our farmers markets can do so.
We accept a range of programs to make wholesome food more accessible to low-income members of the community: SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) EBT which adds to the grocery budget of low-income households, Fresh Connect coupons and Health Bucks to give SNAP users more buying power at the farmers market, and Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) fresh fruit and vegetable coupons for seniors and low-income families with kids. At our year-round Ossining Farmers Market, Ossining Food Pantry clients can use coupons to purchase fresh food from the farmers market to supplement what they receive from the food pantry. 3) This Way Forward: Environmental Stewardship Caring for the earth is fundamental to Down to Earth Markets’ mission: it’s deeply rooted in who we are, what we do, why we do it and is even reflected in our company’s name. At our core, we believe that seasonal, local, nutrient-dense food is a vital part of our heritage that ensures the health of our communities and the land we rely upon. The environmental impacts of our operations can be found in multiple areas:
The majority of farms that serve our markets use regenerative or low-impact agricultural techniques to promote and protect the health of our ecosystems. These include seasonal production, organic growing, crop rotation, crop diversity, cover crops, water management, reduced tillage, on-site composting and other beneficial land-use and healthy soil practices.
Processed food travels around 1,300 miles before reaching the consumer. By providing communities with locally grown, in-season produce, the products sold at our farmers markets incur fewer food transportation miles and associated carbon emissions than that of industrially produced food.
The meat and poultry our farms produce has been sustainably and humanely raised requiring significantly less land-use change, water waste and energy expenditure than that of industrial factory farms. In addition, our prepared foods are made with ingredients and at a scale that eliminates the toll of factory food production.
The products sold by our farms and vendors have minimal to no packaging which helps reduce the volume of trash entering our waste stream. Plus, Down to Earth Markets encourages shoppers to bring their reusable shopping bags and asks vendors to refrain from providing single-use plastic produce and shopping bags unless necessitated by the type of item.
Down to Earth Markets works with local community organizations to provide Textile and Food Scrap Recycling in many of our locations.
4) This Way Forward: Good Corporate Governance As a Certified B Corp, Down to Earth Markets is required to build a corporate governance structure that is accountable to all stakeholders. We consider the impact on our community, employees, and the environment with every business decision that we make. We embrace certification, local sourcing, and community-scale commerce as the best ways to ensure transparency in business and our food system. In addition to B Corp certification, Down to Earth Markets has achieved New York Benefit Corporation status -- a corporate form designed for for-profit entities that want to consider society and the environment, in addition to profit, in their decision-making process.    In an era of ever-growing climate, political and social uncertainty, Down to Earth Markets believes it is critical to continue supporting and strengthening our regional food system and local economy in close alignment with the values of community and environmental care. This over-arching mission has been reflected in our commitment to maintaining B Corp certification since 2014. We invite you to celebrate with us throughout March as we recognize B Corp Month and what it means to be a business centered on making a positive impact and enacting meaningful change in today’s world.
