Dragon 172 (August, 1991). “The Worm has Turned,” by Clyde Caldwell, featuring Babette the Barbarian (based on Caldwell’s then-fiance Babette Fletcher). I like this cover a lot, though it does kind of seem a bit, I dunno, Freudian. I also wonder if those calf-skin pants were added later, given Caldwell’s seeming anti-pants stance.

Babette, a human wild magic barbarian!

Babette is quiet, awkward and angry. She also isn’t that smart (minus one intelligence baby!!!!) And let’s just say she moved homes several times as a child, which has caused her to become very callous and a bit paranoid when it comes to trusting others… she has one friend, one confidant and one person she trusts with her life and that’s her travel companion, a teifling bard (my bfs character hehe ) his name is Eloquence. Depending on the story i’m trying to tell, she is with him or he died because of the nautiloid or however u spell it sorry i also have -1 intelligence lol anyways that’s all i’ve got for now any questions about her are welcome!!!

She adored this.

Subconscious or not, the seamstress notices his ebony tail softly wrapping around her torso. A giggle, before little hands occupy themselves with caressing the scales, only for her nose to nuzzle against the slick surface. Numerous little kisses get offered to his reptilian tail before her lips yearn for Attor's lips instead - She leans up, planting a feather-light peck on the barbarian's mouth. Not longer than a second. Was he sleeping already   ?   Knowing how hard of a time the man had to find rest, Babette sure hopes he does.

Dragon Magazine 172, from August of 1991, is largely concerned with the Underdark. Clyde Caldwell’s cover painting is called “The Worm Has Turned,” and stars Caldwell’s then fiance as Babette the Barbarian. Always liked this one, despite it being a bit of a Freudian nightmare.

Inside, I really like David O. Miller’s grimy, scratch board illustration of Skullport. Not sure if that ever saw reprint in a Forgotten Realms book, but it should have.
