P Generation and Stairway to Capitalism - writing#8

Let’s talk some Pop Culture.  Led Zeppelin IV, the untitled fourth studio album by the British Rock band Led Zeppelin was released on 8 November 1971 by Atlantic Records. One of the singles of this album was called Stairway to Heaven turned out to be one of the most popular songs ever. Rolling Stone Magazine (which was the starboard of the counter culture of 68 generation, later turning and corrupting itself to become one of the most shiny wheel of the locomotive pop culture, the most precious engine of the machine called capitalism) placed the single at number 31 on 500 greatest songs of all time.    

Robert Plant, the writer of the lyrics says 'the song is about a woman who took everything and gave nothing.' Unlike capitalism which gave plenty while taking ideologies and morals from people. It gave them Rock'n Roll, Drugs, TV shows, white wizards, fairy tales and epic battles on big screen. -Many of the Led Zeppelin songs were inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien , the author of The Lord of the Rings-. 

The affects of Rock Music on the fall of Communism is an underrated subject. I started this article with a reference of a music album because I think album covers are not so different from advertising logos. They have a certain style and style is very important if you're promoting something. Capitalism, with the help of commercialism (and the power of style) tried and succeed with creating a counter culture among the young generation of Soviet Union. The same culture that created itself in their homeland, sanding and polishing it then selling it to the youth of Russia. And they sure bought it.     

In 1979 Elton John became the first person to perform a concert on the eastern side of The Iron Curtain. Playing eight concerts in Russia, four in Leningrad and four in Moscow. Throughout the 80s many other names followed him including Queen, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and Ozzy Osbourne.  The audience for these very stylish and talented artists have been warming up well before the 68 movement, with the very roots of Rock'n Roll planted by The Beatles in 50s. The Stilyagi (meaning stylish in russian) the first youth counterculture movement in the Soviet Union emerged in the late 50s. They listened the music and copied the fashion of the western countries. In 1985, with election of Gorbachev, who took close political partnership with president Ronald Reagan basically opened the doors of culture imperialism that had been pushed since the early days of hippie culture. So basically capitalism took the weapon of the people who countered it. And gave it to the people of its enemy, the communism; make the people of the Soviet Union become separated from their state and causing a conflict with the states political orders.     Commercialism played his role quite well in this entertaining war. In P Generation  ('Pepsi' Generation) written by Russian author Viktor Pelevin, one of the most acclaimed writers of modern Russian Literature, tells the story of Babylen Tatarski, an advertiser who uses the national values of the Soviet people and using it to advertise the products of western civilization. He uses diversion such as placing a package of Parliament cigarettes in place of the Parliament building in St. Petersburg. He quotes western music and uses images of western cinema and combining them with idioms of Russian language and scenes from Russian daily routine. The book also refers to the impact of drug use on the new generation of Russia.     I want to point out that while making an example of art forms and artists, I don't intend to accuse them of simply being the role models of capitalism. I want to bring to surface the fact that capitalism uses works of art and uses them to captivate and convert peoples perception. Takes out the gripe and devotion from art, clearing it from any form of ideology and giving it to masses to simply have fun with it. Eating from a silver plate, licking the icing of the cake.
