ok hello i have found that i have no choice but to introduce you to my "divorced zukka but slightly to the left" headcanon for a modern au. basically, a pre-transitioned zuko and sokka have a one night stand at the end of their senior year of high school, and never speak again. roughly six years later, sokka is starting his job at an elementary school (not a classroom teacher, like technology or something) and meets izumi, who is so sweet and cute and i swear thats the face katara makes when she's annoyed, and one day happens to see her dad pick up and huh he looks and AWFUL lot like that person i went to high school with and OH GOD some quick math brings an idea to mind.

So sokka attempts to confront zuko who is very much NOPE DO NOT TALK TO ME, but finally breaks down after a series of shenanigans that def do not involve mild stalking. but only to admit that yes, izumi is sokka's biological daughter, and would like to leave their interactions at that, except sokka has NO interest in SIMPLY leaving it at that because!!! he has a kid!!! that he knew nothing about!!! for six years!!!

zuko very much would like to continue living his life without sokka bc being a single young parent is hard enough but he has a good routine and good relationship with his daughter and he doesnt need this, this, SPERM DONOR to just come in here and mess everything up! the guy hasnt been there the last six years, there is absolutely no reason for his to get involved now!! BUT sokka absolutely would have been there if zuko had only TOLD HIM, but how was ZUKO supposed to know that, and did zuko really think so little of him?? except it was a one night stand and zuko didnt even realize he was a boy until right after and he originally wasnt even planning to keep izumi, and HOW could he have just given up their CHILD without ever even telling sokka about her and given him a CHANCE to take her, and WE WERE JUST KIDS AND HE WAS SCARED-

its complicated. and involves a lot of trying not to shout around izumi, who is just over the moon that her dad and her favorite teacher know each other outside of school. and there's a lot of heartache over sokka having to come to terms with the fact that yeah, hes not izumis parent, and there's only so much he can do without stepping on zuko's toes, and he only wants what is best for izumi, and zuko seeing that maybe sokka really does want to be all in for izumi even if zuko thinks sokka really doesnt fully understand what that means, and would it be such a bad thing? not that either of them are going to admit this to the other.

so it starts with small things, like sokka being allowed to pay child support (which hes been begging to do since day one), and maybe it turns out that zukos new coworker is sokkas friend and they end up at the same party where they can really see each other interact with izumi, and a chunk zuko's summer child care plans for the summer fall apart so sokka offers to babysit since his summer job is remote which feels BIG but also reallyyyyy too convenient to reject,

and then something bigger happens where izumi gets hurt at school and while sokka is blaming himself he's also panicking bc the hospital wont let him stay with her bc hes not an emergency contact so he steels himself and later tells zuko he wants to make his relationship to izumi legal. hes not going to have a custody fight, he would never ask for that, but he wants his name on her birth certificate and wants his name on her list of emergency contacts, and its the first time zuko understand that sokka 100% knows what he's getting into here and is willing to be in this 100%.

So maybe sokka moves into this "uncle sokka" role, because zuko still refuses to tell izumi that sokka is her other dad, and yeah that hurts, but sokka would rather have part of izumi's life if he can't have all of it. and sokka gets a better look inside their lives and discovers that its HARD being a young single parent, why would zuko have risked everything he worked for to mix in some guy he barely knew who might decide that zuko wasn't good enough and take izumi away? and zuko sees the pain sokka has from missing out on so many key moments of izumi's young life, and the more sokka is proving himself as a second parent, the more guilty zuko feels. they go through some shit together and its more and more evident that sokka doesnt just want to be that fun uncle, but he's ready more than willing to be a PARENT even when it means being the bad guy.

and maybe they start falling for each other a little, because they are starting to have this LIFE together and its not just about izumi anymore its the way zuko rolls his eyes and gets the new fancy ice pack out of the freezer when a limping sokka brings izumi back from the park, and its the way sokka makes zuko genuinely laugh after a long day at work, and its like their lives are getting fully intertwined-

except that they arent. and they couldn't. because if sokka decides its too much. because if zukos good favor runs out. if it didnt work out between them. they couldnt do that to izumi. what they have is good, its fine, (even if its not enough) they dont want to risk anything that could disrupt izumi's life. shes the priority. and sure, she's already asking questions about the two of them, but what if they don't work right in a real relationship? the way things are now, either of them could back out, and everyone would eventually be ok. maybe. except every time they think about the possibility, it seems like they are already too intertwined, and either of them trying to untangle would just be a disaster, so imagine if they HAD to untangle, and-

so they just end up in an awkward stage of sad pining. because theres no way it would actually work out. because it would hurt all of them. and their life has never been better, but it's never hurt this much either.

ok so i didnt realize i could still write this long in an ask, but essentially i am not a masochist like you, and they do figure it out in the end. this could happen a number of ways, such as izumi just announcing that yeah this is my dad and his boyfriend, or zukka doing the "pining make outs that we never talk about until one of us snaps and we decide to let ourselves be fucking happy", or a very funny "we both snap and bone for one wonderful night to get it out of our system and then we dont talk about it" which leads to an accidental second baby where sokka and zuko both laugh and say whelp it must be fate lets do this the right way this time.

the most important thing is that they both forget to tell izumi that sokka is her biological father, so teenage izumi is very shocked and upset that shes just had to learn this from something totally mundane like applying for a passport, and sokka and zuko do the spider man finger pointing of "i thought you told her" "no, you were supposed to tell her" "did we really not tell her?" and its absolutely disgusting how cute they are

I feel like sokka does NOT deal with babies (nvm he definitely doesnt its canon) He does not like them, cannot understand them. and sokka is a guy who likes knowing how things work and babies are unpredictable. Babies are gross, unless he gets to see them immediately after momma has cleaned them, he has no interest in being around someone who most likely is literally full of crap..

Now sokka with like 5 to 8 year olds is great. Not because he particularly likes them. He can deal with them usually. Kids feel validated with him because most people baby kids even if they're older. He talks with them like he would any other person. Sokka's a goof but also he can use a boomerang and he has a cool sword and he also fights with kyoshi fans and he's MASTER KATARA'S BROTHER?!?! and best friends with firelord zuko?! and metalbending inventor Toph?! and avatar aang?!?! and he created the submarine and the airballoon?! and he was Suki's boyfriend?!?! like wow

And he'll just kinda start talking about all this stuff and kids love cool stuff and they ask so many questions and he gets to answer them. Then these kids grow up and some of them have taken up different interests because of sokka. so they look for him to geek out over stuff and ask him for suggestions for their ideas or foradvice to better their techniques when sparring or hunting.

And to all this he's just very nonchalant (read: oblivious) about it. He doesn’t act surprised if one of them is shyly asking about something unusual, he just goes "ok sure". And when they accomplish something they hesitantly go over and tell him because they'd like his acknowledgment and he gets real excited about it with them.

Over time he realizes how much he's actually liked working with kids and seeing their growth because he's older and not as sprightly but the there's always kids looking to hear his stories and wanting his help and he cant understand it. But zuko tells him how much he brightens up when the kids ask him stuff, and how he beams when they're grown up and telling him about something new they found out or completed or accomplished.

But even if he's learned its ok to express his feelings, he's always had a hard time with people other than family and the gaang. So he decides to not let anyone know how much he loves it for fear the little kids or the older ones will feel awkward and weird or embarrassed and stop going to him.

And ever since zuko helped him realize, they lay down in bed at night and talk about their day and every so often sokka's face will go all soft all of a sudden and zuko knows so he asks which kid told him what and sokka will gush about it till he falls asleep because "you know what, zuko, you were right. I really do love them"

christmas themed zukka au where iroh is a volunteer santa claus at the mall and makes zuko be his elf

(and yes. he's gotta wear the hat with the felt ears and the pointy shoes with the bells on the toe. and probably the green and red stripped leggings too)

sokka has to chaperone katara and her mallrat friends a couple times each week much to his displeasure. he’d rather be studying for his chem final next month

katara aang and toph make quick work of losing nerdboy sokka while they go fuck around at like. spencer's (not cool, 'tara, you're still a baby! gross!)

so he spends the whole time talking at the massively grumpy elf and refuses to fuck off because he loves it when he can get zuko so mad he starts blushing between his overlarge elf ears

zuko also blushes when sokka flirts shamelessly with him because A) uncle is right there and B) cute boys in nerdy christmas sweaters make him A Little Stupid

at some point hakoda and bato notice that sokka stopped complaining about having to babysit a gaggle of preteens and bato very nonchalantly starts trying to weasle info out of him while hakoda starts slipping more spending money into his backpack because they are Good Dads

and iroh doesn't even have to guilt trip zuko into wearing the leggings anymore-- he even gets a picture of zuko in the whole get up while he tries to get his uncle to hurry into the christmas set piece so they don't miss...the kids. definitely the kids and not that Boy who makes zuko snort laugh

sokka melts when zuko starts signing with a deaf kid in line to meet santa so he asks iroh if he can steal his elf for a food court date

(after a long internal debate about doing the whole sit-on-my-lap-and-tell-me-your-wish thing because he's 15 and kind of an idiot outside of his stem classes and iroh is a very convincing santa)

zuko gets a boyfriend on christmas eve and they spend holiday break watching movies together at uncle's house. he’s sure sokka is the best christmas gift he’s ever gotten.

sokka's new phone homescreen is a picture of zuko at the christmas light show the city had set up at the park all december. his lockscreen is the picture iroh took though, which the old man had sent Sokka the day after the boys' first date outside of the mall just to embarrass his nephew. zuko fucking Hates it

sokka gets his first real kiss at midnight on new years while his kid sister and her friends pretend to gag at the PDA and bato and hakoda pretend not to hear anything from their spots in the next room

Zukka Witch/Familar AU

Sokka’s magic is limited, he knows he’s not as powerful as his sister and their friends. He’s never been good with spell work, and is clumsy with his castings. He’s always tried to shy away from the magic world, and focus more towards the math and science. That’s why he started apprenticeship with an Alchemist, to try to use the little magic he has and focus it on stuff he’s actually good at.

Zuko was cursed with being a Dragon shifter, said his father. His father and his sister were both born as Phoenixes, yet he born to a different breed. His father was disgusted, but decided to work Zuko to the bone in becoming a killing machine. Zuko had work 15 years of his life preparing for the witch that might summon him. The witch would truly be his biggest challenge, they would be powerful and he would have to assist them into any war they bring.

But after his fifteenth birthday, he decided to run away. He wants his life to become his, not a weapon to be used. Him and his uncle have been traveling the world in secret for a year now, trying to find a normal life to live. At age 16, they were able to settle down in a small village, where nobody should be able to find them.

Of course, peace was never an option. Because one day, Sokka had to walk into their small village and pick up a few things for his boss. It was a normal day, until the familiar bond was pulled, yanking Zuko and Sokka from their decent lives. Now, Zuko is stuck babysitting a clumsy baby witch who’s magic is not what he was imagining at all. Definitely thought a witch with a Dragon familiar would be powerful. He guessed wrong.

All Sokka wants to know why his familiar is being so mean to him. Yeah sure, he’s not powerful, he understands the disappointment, but he’s trying. He’s never asked for any of this in his life! If he could be powerful, he would, but he’s not! He wishes this guy would at least act nice like his Uncle. If anything, he was hoping to get a badger frog as a familiar. He did not see a dragon coming.

Who knew a little nerd could become a dragon’s treasure?

Babysitter!au + strangers to lovers + “i let you mooch off of my netflix and this is how you repay me?” (background zukka)

this just turned into a zuko + izumi fic whoops

Zuko had never really needed a babysitter before. His job at the theater and his lack of social life meant that he and his daughter were often attached at the hip, unless she was at school or a friend's house.

So, when Mai had arrived in town, and invited him out for dinner to catch up, Zuko had been nervous about contacting a babysitter, and Izumi had been adamant that she wouldn’t need one.

She quickly changed her mind though, because it turned out she was a sucker for Spiderman and her babysitter Sokka was her new best friend for introducing her to it.

She was also, apparently, a natural performer, and over the course of a few more nights and afternoons of babysitting (per his daughters nagging) she'd practically memorised every Spiderman movie available on netflix.

“Y’know if you’re gonna steal cars, you shouldn’t dress like a car thief.”

Zuko snorted and readjusted the bag in his arms, trying to get them to stop cutting off the circulation in his hand. “Stop quoting Spiderman at me and open the door please.”

Izumi sighed, sounding incredibly put-upon for someone who’d managed to pout her way into getting ice cream, and pulled on the handle so Zuko could shove the groceries into the back seat.

“My weakness is small knives. Anything but knives!” Izumi declared, dropping to her knees and shielding her face, knocking her spiderman beanie off her head in the process. Zuko was honestly a little impressed with her performance, even if it did result in him picking silly string out of his sandwich after she shot him with it.

The final straw was watching his 13 year old re-enact the douchey dance from Spiderman 2, swaggering around their living room and shooting finger guns at random objects.

Shaking with laughter, Zuko followed her with the camera on his phone from where he was curled up on the couch, having to bury his face into his knee when she started rolling her wrists in time with her hips.

The video was shaky and a little off center at times but still easily recognisable as his daughter being ridiculous, and he tapped on the now familiar contact without a second thought.

Zuko paused, staring at his screen in surprise for long enough that Izumi abandoned her dancing and jumped up onto the couch beside him, squeezing her way under his arm so she could see his screen.

With a loud and dramatic gasp (Zuko was almost tempted to offer her a job) she started bouncing up and down, jostling Zuko enough that he almost dropped his phone.

“Yesyesyesyes!! Dad you have to say yes- wait gimme your phone you won’t do it right-”

Zuko shoved himself off of the couch, escaping her grabby hands and then holding her back with a foot against her chest so she was pinned to the back of the couch, pouting.

“I can say yes to a date on my own thanks, meddler.” He muttered, typing out an affirmative as excitement bubbled in his chest. Izumi poked her tongue out and struggled against his foot some more before finally just pinching the skin under his ankle so he yelped and hopped back.

Izumi scampered off somewhere, probably to the kitchen to steal his fancy chili chocolate, while he rubbed at his ankle and smiled at his phone, Sokka's following text offering a date and a place.

- a few days later -

Zuko gingerly shut the door behind him, every sound feeling amplified in the darkness. He was home later than he'd intended, and was grateful to Sokka's friend Aang for making sure the house was locked up and secure when he'd left a few minutes ago.

When he hit the living room, he was suddenly blinded by the lights turning on, finding Izumi sitting in an armchair facing the front door.

"You're home late."

She was wearing one of his shirts, the logo so faded neither of them knew what it was originally, and a pair of fluffy spiderman-themed pyjama's. Her hair was falling out of it's braid, pressed flat under the frames of her glasses.

Somehow, despite being both the adult and the parent, Zuko felt like he'd broken a rule.

"You're up late." He retorted, raising his eyebrow. She looked to the side shiftily, like she'd suddenly realised her mistake before raising her chin defiantly.

"Did you have fun? Was he nice? Do I need to shoot him with my nerf gun?"

"Since when did you have a nerf gun?"

"Forget I said anything about a nerf gun. Was it nice?"

Zuko stared at her, feeling ridiculously fond and still running on the high of being kissed on his doorstep like a teenager.

"Yes, it was nice." He finally admitted, telling her about how Sokka had picked him up and opened his door for him and pulled out his chair like a gentleman. She laughed when he told her about he and Sokka arm wrestling over who got to pay, following to his room while he changed into his pyjamas.

She climbed into his bed with him, snuggling up to his side and asking more questions about their date until she finally interrupted herself with a yawn and fell asleep, mumbling something about a spiderman marathon.

some zukka florist/tattoo artist hcs cause I can't bring myself to write a fic rn

THE TATTOO PARLOR:

- The Jasmine dragon is a tattoo parlor. Iroh, still “The Dragon of the West” retires after a successful career, leaving the tattoo shop to Zuko and Aang

- Zuko had heard of the success of a child prodigy who had been hand designing intricate tattoos since he was 12. After a short lived internal bout of jealousy, Zuko keeps tabs on Aang’s story as the boy grows up. He does this until he’s old enough to be an apprentice. 

-This would make Aang 18 and Zuko 21 or something like that idk

- Aang learns how to tattoo for real from Zuko and they begin to work the shop together. 

- Aang, who grew up as basically a child celebrity, brings interest to the shop. Iroh helps keep things moving financially at times, but is more resigned to senior recreational clubs, tea brewing, and other stuff that makes zuko cringe

- Zuko has a bad neck from being hunched over all the time.

- Zuko lives in a flat above the parlor, which Iroh pays for. Iroh lives in his own home in the city.

- Zuko does henna for toph before she lets him actually ink her

THE FLOWER SHOP:

- The parlor and the flower shop are next to each other on a busy street in the city. The storefronts are separated by a door that leads upstairs to the apartments

- The flower shop belongs to Mura, Mai’s Grandmother. Mai and her mother, Michi, work there. Mura has owned the shop for years, Michi works the finances and delivery, and Mai arranges.

- Sokka is a mechanical engineering major and Katara is a nursing major with a minor in women’s studies at Ba Sing Se University. Toph is a metallurgical engineering major.

- Katara babysits Mai’s infant brother, Tom-Tom, for Michi after her morning classes and watches him while she does her homework (Michi is a single mom, fuck Mai’s dad lol)

- Gran-gran sends Katara to the flower shop for fresh arrangements every week, purple arctic blooms, for the house

- Katara is paid by Michi, so in turn, the family supports the flower shop!

- Hakoda and bato are coparents ok!!!

- Iroh loves moonflowers and will buy them (and jasmine) in tiny pots to litter around the studio “for heart”. He 10000% flirts with the older women in the flower shop.

hehe okay so this one may be weird but i just… i love it so much for whatever reason ajsbdjne

okiday so it’s a zukka bus driver au where zuko is a single dad with izumi and sokka had to drop out of college for awhile due to family / money stuff, and so he started working as a bus driver for schools until he can go back to school

and izumi is on sokka’s bus and idk why but she gets in a fight with someone on the bus (they were prolly being mean—like maybe they said something crappy about her being adopted or something) and sokka had to pull the bus over and break them up and he helped calm izumi down because she was like on the verge of a panic attack and maybe she breaks her nose or she breaks someone’s nose

and when she gets home, she tells her dad about what happened and how much she loves bus driver sokka and zuko is like angry on her behalf at the student who insulted his daughter and ends up meeting sokka and thanking him and izumi can see the ‘oh he’s hot’ look on both of their faces and is like “sokka should come over for dinner, you know as a thank you” and basically works to set them up and stuff

and zuko eventually realizes how insanely smart sokka is and helps convince him to go back to school because sokka is kind of nervous to go back and sokka babysits izumi (depending on how old she is lol) when zuko’s time consuming job tears him away from dinner and stuff or maybe sokka takes her out to dinner whenever zuko asks him to keep her company

and that’s all I really have for now but sokka would be such a great bus driver and also bus drivers should get paid more ??? like the fact that there are certain ‘jobs’ out there that make more money than bus drivers (tik tokers) makes me so sad because I had the best bus drivers ever and she worked SO HARD anyways

1. how did they feel about raising children? did these feelings change once they became parents?

I feel like Zuko would be Terrified to have kids. For several reasons: 1, he thinks they’d be afraid of him(...they are not.) 2: he’s super awkward around them and never knows what to do, (once, when he was tasked to babysit a baby, he panicked and threw a blanket over the cradle when they stated crying...) and 3, the most important reason, he’d probably be scared that he would hurt them, or be anything like his father was to him. But when he and Sokka decided to have Izumi, all his worries melted away the moment he held her for the first time.

Now for Sokka... I see him as the type of person that takes the role as the fun uncle. Gives them gifts, goes out and has fun with the kids, does things with them that their parents probably(definitely) would not want them doing.... takes them back to their parents at the end of the day, or if things start to go sideways. But at some point, something clicked and he thought “hey... I think I’d be pretty good at this. This might be something I’d wanna do with my life.” I don’t think much would change after Izumi was born... but I do think he’d be way less cocky about how “easy” parenting is.
