"It's not done, Lance, leave it alone."

That got what could only be called a whine, and Joseph glanced over his shoulder just enough to see Lance apparently wilt against the counter.

"It's been hours, though," he said, head thrown back dramatically, the effect only aided by the curtain of black hair. "Come on, babysweet, one bite before I literally wither away."

The eyeroll was automatic as Joseph turned back to the dishes he was working through, though he didn't try too hard to hide the start of a grin. "It's a stew, it's supposed to take a while. Leave it alone."

"One bite."

"No."

"Just one."

He could see Lance straighten out of the corner of his eye, and it was a testament to both of their speeds that Joseph had the spray nozzle trained on him the same second Lance's hand touched the pot lid.

They'd been in similar standoffs before. Granted, those had frequently been with knives or guns, but the tension was the same. Joseph knew they were both distinctly aware that the other was not bluffing, and he could see Lance weighing the pros and cons extremely quickly.

Pros apparently won out.

The lid shifted. The floor between them and subsequently Lance himself were promptly soaked.

Lance blinked once and then beamed.

"Now you just got rid of the threat," he pointed out. Somehow he managed to quickly pluck a tiny potato out of the pot and popped it in his mouth whole, spinning around just in time for the next spray to hit the back of his head.

"You're a fucking bastard, Forrester!" Joseph called after the quickly retreating and dripping man.

A potato-muffled "Love you too!" came from the living room and Joseph made extra sure he wasn't being watched when he turned back to the sink again and let himself grin fully.

it was , of course , subverted and made out to believe the prince was the one who had been the defending hero. that yarrow had been an awful creature and a snake waiting in the shadows. anything to silence this indiscretion and how it would ruin the northern royal family ‘ s reputation. the rite of blood had been yarrow ‘ s to bear back then , and he is actually kitty ‘ s namesake. they share dreams far beyond the simple plane of such a thing as death. it matters little. kitty and he share the same seal between them. she will always be an echo of him.

both generals. both destined. both knights to the majesties they ‘ d loved. one capable of coming out the other side.

yarrow and kitty speak in dreams and in altered states. they know one another closely. he has made her feel more understood than her parents has ever hoped to. he loves this grandchild he will never truly know ; he loves this child he wishes could have been his own. he wishes his life could have been beautiful.

they connect often during prayer and that is sacred to kitty. she asks him for guidance and for counsel. his body remains in the valentine crypt , unaltered from its moment of death. it is left with nothing but the scarred remains of the fatal blow that killed him. kitty often pays her respects directly to him , attends to the body as though this might have been her father. as though he loved her as joss never did.

in a perfect world, yarrow would have been her father.
