Soo, uhh, the Arknights anime...
(fyi, this might be obvious, but I’m gonna spoil the first episode now. If you haven’t seen it, go watch it. Then come back. Or don’t. I’m not your mom. I’m going to dump my thoughts here. This isn’t going to be very structured, very sorry if it’s incomprehensible rambling. It’s a long one. I’m not even kidding.)
First of all: What is this show supposed to be?
This might be an obvious one. An adaption of Arknights main story, in particular its first couple of chapters. The show is called “Prelude to Dawn” which does imply, also based on the material they have shown so far, that they will adapt Chapters 0 - 3 (as these chapters are also displayed together in the game’s story hub). Currently the show is listed with 8 episodes, which is shorter than most other shows.
With that out of the way, what kind of adaption is Arknights: Prelude to Dawn? Is it attempting to simply transfer its story to a different medium? Market the game to a new audience? Or is it trying to improve on a story, which was flawed on release, due to a lack of experience?
Or to frame the question differently: Why adapt Arknights into an anime show at all?
There are a couple of reasons for that. First of all: Expectations. If you’re releasing an anime-style game (or a manga or probably also a light novel), and it gains decent popularity, it’s a given that your fanbase will expect to see an anime adaption. Most fans are dreaming of that perfect adaption, that captures everything they love about a piece of media and looks stellar. Which I think is understandable, but also, when it comes to video games, near impossible to do right. Games are interactive art - you can only transfer a fraction of that experience into a visual/auditive medium.
Basically, you can tell me the story, but you can never capture the frustration of trying to clear NL-S-3 CM. Don’t get me wrong, I love the story, but I also love the gameplay. You can’t capture the gameplay, because I’m not the one doing it. In an anime, I watch someone else doing it. This makes it, by default, impossible to deliver on the expectations set by the community.
If you’re making it so hard on yourself to deliver a satisfying product then, why bother? Reason #2: You can make money off of it. If you have a bunch of people, who are by default willing to spend money on your product, because there’s a familiar name on the tin.
I cut this one short: I don’t know how profitable making this show is. You can watch it on Crunchyroll and I don’t know how much HG is making by selling the liscense. But then they’re also sharing it on YouTube which... I mean, it’s nice, don’t get me wrong, but like... for free? I mean they are getting ad revenue too, but... is that enough to make up for the production cost or even turn a profit? I guess you could also sell physical copies, the fans are gonna love those. But is that enough? I have honestly no idea.
Reason #3: You can market your game. A lot of manga and light novels used to do this and probably still do (don’t know for sure, I don’t watch as many animes anymore), where they get adapet for a single 12-ep season, only to push sales on the original work. No Game No Life, Btooom!, Baccano! come to mind for me. Decent shows, but will probably never have another season aired, even though the show is far from concluded.
If you wanted to make an Arknights show, to have more people pick up your game, selling them a story is one way to do it. But frankly, is that going to work? Remember you’re selling a gacha game. Peeps like me are here for the story, sure - but also for the characters. And if you want to haul in new customers, you might want to sell me your characters.
I know this is going to sound cynical, but if you’re not showing me at least 6* waifus only obtainable by gacha in the first 2 minutes, what’s the point? EP1 features exactly one character who is (not even exclusively) obtainable by gacha: Dobermann, a 4*. So honestly, either HG has no idea how to market their game (which looking at some of their ads might be a somewhat valid take) or that’s not what they were going for. Or they have a lot of faith that the story ends on strong enough of a cliffhanger to pull in the players then. (Which I don’t think either? Like, there’s a Limited Banner coming up both on CN and Global. Why wouldn’t you want to pull in players now?)
Which leaves me only with Reason #4: You create it because you can.
You can also call this one wishful thinking. I certainly think it is. Nowadays it’s hard for me not to look at PieceOfMedia(tm) and immediately think about what it’s trying to sell me. Even Arknights to an extend, isn’t only trying to tell me story. Every event comes with a new banner, so I can waste money on the newest 6* Blorbo. But I wouldn’t like Arknights if I didn’t see an earnest attempt between all the gacha banners and marketable characters to create something meaningful.
Earlier this week I got Glaucus’ module. I don’t think she’s a super popular character, so her module text will probably go unnoticed by most players. It made me tear up, because whoever wrote these few sentences wanted to express a kind of joy and happiness that not everyone can or will experience. This is why I play Arknights.
It’s these kind of things that make wonder, if this anime really only does exist, because there are a couple of people who care so much about something they have created, they want even more people to experience it. Even if gacha or tower defense isn’t their cup of tea. Even if it doesn’t turn a profit. Even if it goes largely unnoticed or unappreciated.
The truth is, probably, somewhere in between these four reasons. That’s why this adaption exists.
And it’s actually pretty good. Admittedly, it has been a while since I’ve read Arknights first chapters, but I still remember that at the time I skipped through most of them. They weren’t the reason I stuck with the game. The reason came way later. If anything, Arknights was a welcome distraction from the absolute hellhole that ‘Rona was at the time.
There’s a strange sense of comfort in a story about a world ravaged by an illness, too poorly understood to be cured, and people yet fighting to help those who suffer from it. Because at the time, when I looked at the outside world, all I could see was selfishness and fear. It was probably, curiously, the best possible time when the game had come out. At least for me.
I think what sums up this episode is that it was simply: Solid. Unspectular, but solid. The animation was good. It looked well-made and it was clear to see, that the animators put a lot of care into every scene. The dark scenes hit pretty hard. The voice acting was really good and I especially adore the Doctor’s voice. There was only one fight scene, but it was well done. I liked how they portraied the Doctor’s tactical thinking, using the drones and all that stuff.
But overall, the pacing was pretty slow and the exposition felt a little... clumsy. The Doctor’s amnesia and weak physical state is a good explanation to have all the characters explain a lot of stuff to them. But it slows the story down in a situation where it would otherwise be adviceable to... hurry up and get the fuck out of there? We know from the beginning that Amiya and her companions are in enemy territory, so having them stop every other minute to tell the Doctor all the stuff they have forgotten takes out the urgency from the story. Not completely, most of the time they are still hiding somewhere. But apparently it’s not urgent enough to not save Ursus mom and her daughter from Reunion.
A faster pacing definitely would have helped deliver the story. I’m not sure how much of the exposition was actually necessary, a lot of it felt like it was mentioned twice, but that might also be just me. I’m already familiar with the setting afterall. I’m still curious how good the setting was actually explained though. I will try to convince a friend, who has no idea what Arknights is about, to watch the first episode. Just morbid curiosity.
A lot of this might read like I have mixed feelings about the show, but that’s not exactly true. In fact, I love it and enjoyed the first episode so much, I will probably rewatch it at least once or twice over the next week. Most of my thoughts are just... uncertainty. This is afterall HG’s first attempt at an adaption. So far, it’s really good. It has honestly surpassed all my expectations and I was expecting something less polished than that. But I want to be careful about setting my expectations too high.
On the other hand I can’t help but wonder if this show is what will inevitably make Arknights pop culture - if such a thing can even be called inevitable. Maybe Arknights isn’t meant to appeal to everyone. A part of me would much prefer that over a slow decline into mediocrity that usually comes with increased marketability.
I have long since made peace with the fact that even Arknights might only be a phase for me. Right now, I still love the game and I play it every day and talk to people about it all the time. I know this can’t last forever, and I can’t help but wonder, whether my love for Arknights has already peaked or if it’s still going to last for a long time. Times feel uncertain to me so I find it though to believe in an eternity.
Regardless, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting for this to last just a little longer.
Frankly, I don’t think this show was made to market the game. I feel like it was made for me, and people like me. I’m probably wrong about this, but this is what I choose to believe right now.
To the two people who chose to read all of this: .... thanks for reading, but also, why?

11/6/2022
Much of the day taken up assembling a new dresser so I can (theoretically) put all my clothes away at once. Watched a few more episodes of Baccano & am trying to navigate my hazy recollection of Things I Was Told about Clair (no spoilers)
More screenshots. I know I said at one point that I can’t be the first person insane enough to do this but the deeper I get the more I’m like…. you know….. maybe I am, actually
Tried to write a bit too but ch 4 is a beast. I managed to wrangle the physics shit to a reasonable level but now the damn thing’s too fluffy. I gotta inject some urgency or it’s just gonna be chapter 1 in reverse, it’s gonna freak people out. Plus it’s still ridiculously long 🤔 I can probably live with that

The Great Anime Rewatch of 2024 - Part IV
Lucky Star
First watched: Circa 2008? Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 5 New rating: 5
The weird shit about Lucky Star is that even though the show is essentially about nothing, the episodes go by very quickly for me. (Compared to other slice of life shows in this rewatch round that were mind numbingly slow, but actually had a plot, or something resembling a story arc: Aoi Hana, Aria, and Kimi ni Todoke.) Its quick switching between scenes due to its nature as a 4-koma adaptation is actually doing wonders for my shitty attention span. With that said, it was wearing out its welcome very quickly, and motivation to watch more was low. The second half starts focusing on the expanded cast that I don’t give a shit about, and I don’t think other fans do either. Lucky Star is definitely not a show to be binged, and I also don’t see myself revisiting it again.

Blood Blockade Battlefront 1 & 2
First watched: Fall 2015, Fall 2017, original airdates Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 7, 7 New rating: 4, 6
I’ve been on a weird streak of watching anime featuring blonde twins: Migi & Dali, Trigun Stampede, and now BBB. As soon as I started watching, I remembered the original story was written by the same author as Trigun. Rewatching Trigun did not go well for me. But wait! Matsumoto Rie directed the first season. Maybe this won’t be so bad.
First off, I’m not wild about the art style—specifically the way people are drawn. There are stunning visuals elsewhere: the not-chess match in episode three, the giant tree train station, etc. The ending sequence is fun and joyous. BBB’s tone reminds me more of Baccano or Space Dandy than Trigun, which is definitely a good thing. What I don’t think is a good thing is how BBB starts with a large cast, and primarily focuses on what they can do, rather than who they are. The problem is exacerbated as new characters are introduced every episode. Space Dandy was similar, but that show did a much better job of establishing its core cast. Then the story shifted to anime original material which was so poorly done and…maybe Matsumoto Rie isn’t as good of a director as I once thought. (Although I do love King of Despair, he just wasn’t in the right anime.)
The second season’s change in director was noticeable immediately. The first thing that felt different was the music—we started off with a rap song. The visuals also look cleaner. And, oh? What’s this? We’re finally spending time on the Libra members? I’m finally getting a feel for who they are as people now? Amazing. This is what I was looking for last season. But of course, I’m impossible to please, whatever. And now my problem is that the entire season is episodic, and no overarching goal for the heroes to be working towards. The seasons should’ve aired in reverse: season one should’ve been character-centric episodic, and give an overarching story to season two. There were some fun moments, but BBB just didn’t do it for me the second time around.

Rideback
First watched: June 2011 Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 7 New rating: 4
Here’s an anime no one else remembers. Taking place in the year 2025, and with the original story starting publication in 2003, it’s interesting to see how people depicted the future without the presence of social media and over-reliance of cell phones. Other than that, there’s not much to say about Rideback. I think the premise of a retired dancer trying to find a new purpose could’ve been really lovely in the hands of a better writer. Too bad the writing and characters are dull, but the mechs themselves are cool. More pirouetting mechs please. Moving on.

Full Metal Panic! & Fumoffu
First watched: June 2012 Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 8, 8
New rating: 5, 7
This is such an anime anime: teenage mercs piloting mechs, high school romcom, terrorists, man Full Metal Panic! sure does have it all. When I first watched it, I liked it enough to watch the sequel, the comedy spinoff, and the OVAs/specials. There is something about it that is timeless, yet it has aged strangely. The first few episodes in particular were very bad. Barring the lackluster animation, it did get better, or at least more tolerable. I’m thankful that Sosuke’s secret was out to Kaname by episode five. But every time I finished an episode, I asked myself, ‘what actually happened?’ Things are happening, but it never feels like the plot is advancing, or the characters are growing. I lasted twelve episodes.
Crunchyroll doesn’t have the second season, but it does have Fumoffu. I had a much better time here. Because the jokes are so specific to the characters and the bits actually have a plot, the comedy has aged surprisingly well.
I didn't realize how big of a franchise Full Metal Panic! actually is until now. With a a ridiculous number of light novels and manga, and anime adaptations as recent as 2018, I can’t fathom this story going on for as long as it has.

Fruits Basket
First watched: Circa 2006 Rewatched: January 2024
Original rating: 7 New rating: 7
Fruits Basket and I go waaaaaay back. Both the English and Japanese versions, as well as the manga, I couldn’t get enough of this shit when I was in middle school. I’ve been wondering whether to watch the remake for a while now, but wanted to revisit the original first.
Barring the mispronunciations of the character’s names, the dub's core cast still rocks. I alternated between English and Japanese depending on what characters were present. Also this is funny as hell.
The main issues I have with this adaptation are: the soundtrack sounds like it only has ten songs, and constantly reuses the same song each episode, the lackluster art style and animation (Deen 2001 at your service), and some of the English voice actors. Aside form that, this story still holds up. And I am more emotionally attached to it than I thought I was going to be. I still like these characters, I still like this story, and I still love that gentle opening song. I had a good time revisiting this.
Dear fucking god please let the remake still keep the humor. Don’t let it succumb to the melodrama.

I Know That You're Timid
What's the Tea? Tuesday
Life is dumb right now and I'm having to focus more on responsible stuff instead of dating, so this is going to be another fairly short one. Also the guy across the street woke me up at 8:30 am using a chainsaw on his trees, so I'm not in the best mood.
How was last week?
Sunday was a good day. Cuddlebug went to work all day, and while he was gone I turned his bed into a small painting studio so I could funnel some of my stress into being creative. Lots of cartoon characters, weird memes, and I'm also working my way up to painting people which is very intimidating.
Once he was home for the evening we watched more Squid Game - including the most difficult episode with the marbles.
My emotions!
It's such a good show.
Tumblr media
Monday morning I woke up from weird nightmares, and did more painting. We finished Squid Games. I swear we're not the most boring people ever, except sometimes we are and that's fine, too.
Later I was feeling productive so I took nice pictures of the stuff he's selling on eBay. Helpful Girlfriend. Anybody want to buy some old Atari games?
We spent the afternoon cuddling and trying to pick a movie to watch, and because I was put on the spot I suddenly forgot both the titles and plots of every good movie I've ever seen. I failed at summarizing movies so badly that he asked me to show him trailers instead. We somehow landed on Blue Velvet, because I'm always down for watching weird shit. So after a quick Burger King run we started watching it, and...man, I just don't know. What can you say about David Lynch?
*credits roll*
Cuddlebug: *points at screen* That was a movie.
Me: That sounds right.
Cuddlebug: And we watched it.
Me: Yup.
Cuddlebug: I give that a "Movie" out of 5.
Tumblr media
Though I was having trouble staying awake throughout the movie - I'm starting to think big pasta dinners are fucking with my blood sugar - my couch sleepiness did not translate to bed sleepiness (as is so often the case), so I stayed up too late.
Tuesday morning I woke up to Cuddlebug on the phone making a doctor's appointment. Which...hot. Definitely playing into my Responsible Adult kink. But also fuck it was loud.
Tumblr media
He teased me about being grumpy, which I feel is a natural reaction to being woken up by someone shouting 6 feet away from you. But it was almost noon, so we won't hold that against him.
Then he went out to run errands and came back with baked goods. Cookies, red velvet whoopie pies, cream puffs, flan. He specifically brought me a slice of Italian Creme cake because he's a smart man and he knows the way to my heart.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Dr. Strangelove texted me to ask if I'd seen the new Doctor Strange movie. We've been texting infrequently and mostly superficially. I'm keeping the lines of communication open because we still have logistical things to coordinate for a while, and as Cuddlebug said a while back, it's always good to have less enemies.
While he was starting dinner, Cuddlebug and I started Baccano! (an anime that he pitched to me as "There are a bunch of people on a train. Some of them are immortal and some aren't"). We watched the first four episodes, and I'm gonna be honest, I still really don't understand what's happening. But it's entertaining, for sure, and I'm fine sticking with it. It's only 16 episodes, anyway, and he assured me it'll make more sense at some point. Do I believe him? Mostly.
Wednesday we did a good amount of couch cuddling and watching Rick and Morty while eating the rest of the baked goods. Then he made me a sandwich and took me home.
Tumblr media
Since then I've really just been applying for jobs, watching old episodes of John Oliver, writing, and painting.
Tumblr media
I've definitely got some fun things to look at tomorrow...

Hi! Could you pleaseee draw something Superlock?
Thank you for sending a message! I don’t want to disappoint you, but I’ve never really been into Supernatural or Sherlock. I watched SuperWhoLock, but about 90% of my obsession back then was about Doctor Who.

Oooh, what are your favorite animes then??
*puts on my annoying weeb hat and cape on*
well since you asked..
i have watched many anime in my life because i didn't have any friends growing up and was on the internet for a long while b4 was normal so my list is a very very random fucking assortment of an me. my top ten is a mess but these r reccs where im like. if u think anime is lame.. Watch These
also this list won't include anime like hq, bnha, kny, aot, jjk, any of the big three or rlly anything that came out more recently i dont think since you probably already have seen those animes b4
ALSOO i didn't think it fit here but another anime i love is silver spoon - its a farming anime with a rag-tag group of characters and it's near and dear to me. my favorite slice of life ever.
tldr ;; if you don't wanna go through the list, number 3, 8, 9, and 10 are the must watches imo.
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER,
ARI'S ANIME RECCOMENDATIONS!
PLEASE PROCEED W CAUTION AND LOOK UP WARNINGS - a lot of these are super dark!!
1. baccano - a fast-paced non-linear mafia anime that follows the storylines of several interesting and charismatic characters in the prohibition era in the states. has elements of surrealism and gets pretty violent albeit it's a little slapstick. i think this anime is fucking fantastic. think the story-telling is brilliant and interesting.
2. zankyou no terror - a psychological anime about two japanese teenagers responsible for a giant terror attack using a robot named sphinx. despite the title and the intial episodes - zankyou no terror is not an anime about terrorism but about politics and reflections. its really great but i can't tell you much about it without spoiling it.
3. inuyashiki - this anime is a fucking mess and it is incredibly dark. the same death note air but with a lot more sarcasm and black humor slash comedy. the gist is that two men encounter robotic powers. while the older of the two mcs finds that being responsible and heroic is important despite his pathetic life - the younger more apathetic one immediately starts fucking killing people. 😭. home to the iconic "do you watch one piece scene."
4. psycho pass - one of the first animes i ever watched and im genuinely really elated that ppl are watching it. about a society where everyone's thoughts and feelings are carefully monitored and how that reflects onto their careers and lives in general. very dark and has a lot of content warnings, but it's great.
5. durarara - this is a very biased opinion but i think this is one of the best animes ive ever watched. i couldn't pin why. i think the cast of characters is absolutely stunning but i also enjoyed it a lot conceptually. it's a gang anime with supernatural elements but it's honestly hard to explain other than that. still so fucking good though.
6. say 'i love you' - this is a random one i know. but it's a romance anime between a subdued highschool girl and a popular highschool guy. seems very generic but the characters and world-building are real and raw and every single person has a story. from a writers perspective it's brilliant and yamato was a childhood crush for me. there's a lot of discussion with one character about eating disorders as an fyi but god. god. we deserved another season but the manga is good too.
6a. honorable mention on great romance anime is maid-sama. don't let the cover fool you - our main lead is a badass but she works at a maid-cafe. one of her classmates happens to catch her. very sincere romance that i highly reccomnd.
7. cowboy bebop - this anime is literally a classic, so i don't feel like i have to tell you to watch it. probably one of the greatest animes that will ever exist. space cowboys kickin' ass and a goddamn fucking banger if i've ever seen it. of everything here - a must watch.
7a. honorable mention - gintama. one of the funniest animes ive ever seen but it's hella long. hijikata is goddamn funny though.
8. samurai champloo - this is . ONE if not THEE best fucking animes you'll ever fucking watch. this anime is witty, charming, historical - with an iconic cast of characters and some of the most funny and wholesome interactions you'll ever witness. mugen is cynical and badass and his dialogue and swords skill will keep you engaged no matter what. essentially two samurai and a waitress end up being fugitives in edo-period japan and it's just so fucking fantastic. please watch it.
8a. honorable mention - afro samurai. similar samurai concept with the coolest mc you've ever met. more shounen-y if that's your thing.
9. mushi-shi - this anime changed my life. no joke. this anime is probably my number one influence on me as a person and as a writer. it is slow-paced and episodic and it follows the story of a man named ginko. mushi are the main element in the world, they are small creatures that can't be seen to everyone. this is one of the best animes ever imo. it's not for everyone but if you like something a little more subdued and sentimental - please check it out.
10. steins gate - this anime is probably one of the only animes that people universally agree on being a must watch. follows the story of a mad scientist and talks about subjects of time travel and a secret society. the execution of the tropes in the show are done flawlessly. objectively one of the best on the list. very.. melancholy? psychological? but so fucking good. a good watch if you liked death note or psycho pass.
THIS WAS SOOO hard to write. im sure no one cares but this list is very near and dear to my heart with anime i think is fucking incredible. if you give even one of these a watch - please talk to me about it!!! i have so many more even w/o the honorable mentions but yes... Yes.

Tag Game
10 Characters, 10 Fandoms, 10 Tags
Tagged by the wonderful @still-gathering-roses 💖💖💖!!! Thanks for the tag! This favorite character challenge was so much fun. It took me a while because I’m SUPER indecisive so I kept changing my mind 😂. Also this definitely reawakened some dormant hyperfixations (so it may get long lmao). Anyway, here’s my top picks <3
1. Wei Wuxian (Mo Dao Zu Shi) - I’m sure this comes as a surprise to no one that I chose wwx first. He’s hands down one of my favorite fictional characters from any media ever. Period. He rides a fine line between “my poor little meow meow” and “reckless little shit (affectionate)” to me. My #1 “I wish to study you” character 💖
2. Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket) - My girl!!! I read this manga when I was a little girl and I was so amazed by what a great character tohru is. The way she loves so strongly and both inspires and comforts those around her. She is such an angel :)
3. Catra (She Ra & the Princesses of Power) - My poor little meow meow. Yes, she’s a mess, but she’s MY mess. She had me at “meow.” I only want good and wonderful things for her. Like therapy and love.
4. Killua Zoldyck (Hunter x Hunter) - An assassin with a heart of gold. My favorite trope 💖. I could actually talk about this little guy forever. He has one of the greatest character arcs in any story I’ve ever read. His journey from bratty assassin working for his family to learning how to pull himself out of his codependency and how to love himself and those in his life had me like 🥺💖💖.
5. Ash Lynx (Banana Fish) - …He is the best boy. I have nothing more to add 😭❤️ (if you ask me about this show, you’ll get the ramblings of a broken woman along with a lot of crying face emojis).
6. Dani Clayton (Haunting of Bly Manor) - Miss Clayton!!! She is so strong and I admire her so much. The ending to Bly Manor and Dani’s whole journey in general had me in tears but also feeling so many things all at once. It left me thinking about life and what it really means to love.
7. Zhou Zishu (Word of Honor) - “Depressed assassin who drunkenly stumbles his way into having a family again and relearns what it means to live.” Yeah, I can’t beat that perfect description. He’s a gorgeous disaster man who’s just trying to get by, but keeps getting dragged around by the plot :)
8. Lio Fotia (Promare) - From his very first scene, I was like whoever this masked person is, he’s my favorite. The ability to conjure thrones, motorcycles, weapons, and dragons from pink flames is cool enough alone. But to also be a courageous leader to a group of refugees, and to have the willpower to set out and change the entire world? AND to do it all while wearing the coolest outfit? Lio’s on another level 💖
9. Czeslaw Meyer (Baccano!) - An excuse to spread my baccano agenda. This is one of my favorite animes of all time (with one of the best endings to any story ever!). It’s like a super violent and convoluted mystery taking place during 1930’s America. Like a Quentin Tarantino movie, but animated. The story’s told out of order, some of the answers to the mysteries are in the very first episode. It jumps between 3 timelines. There is no protagonist. With a large cast of characters, it was hard to pick just one. But little Czeslaw, a young immortal with trust issues, is one of my favorites. He goes through so much trauma, but it never makes him stronger. He’s so terrified of his own kind, he would sacrifice innocents if it meant never letting another immortal get near him. The end of his character arc makes me smile and cry every time I watch it again.
10. Richie Tozier (It Chapter Two) - I couldn’t decide between Richie and Eddie, but alas I had to pick the loser who uses humor as a defense mechanism. I love Richie so much mostly because he is me. I remember seeing chapter two in the theater and just feeling… so exposed whenever Richie was on screen. I was like please get off the screen me but as a bespectacled forty year old man, I’m feeling TOO seen. He is a train wreck of a character with so many flaws. But he learns about self love and self acceptance and how to rely on his friends, even amidst his darkest moments, and as someone who struggles with the same things (and also had a very in denial/closeted teenage years. me trying to ignore my gayness 🤝 richie trying to ignore his gayness) idk his character just meant a lot to me.
Oops, this got a little long. If you got this far thank you for listening to my ted talk 😊
Tagging : (Of course, only if you would like to! Feel free to ignore if you’d rather not or have already done this 💖. OH! And if any of you mention tgcf, would you please do me a huge favor and keep it spoiler free 🥺? Like any big spoilers. I’ve only watched the first season of the donghua. Thanks a million! 😭) @maikhiwi00 @bioerin @shigacajun @hishoukoku @theheartconstellation @certified-bi-fangirl-disaster @fuckingspacequeen @multi-trashqueen @punk-weiwuxian @macsterism + anyone who sees this and would like to try it, too. Go ahead and say I tagged you 💖

baccano for the ask game?
ahh baccano, one of my old faves. I will answer as anime/light novel
My rating (1-10) anime: 7/10 - super fun and the dub and music choices are excellent, but the anime lost a lot of character depth and the dialogue sounds a bit stupid. the action and animation was good for 2007 but the off-model shots in the ova bring it down. light novel: 9/10: I can't rate the novels accurately because I've been in love with it for so many years but I always found the plots, character arcs, writing style, originality, impeccable structure and planning, and illustrations magnificent. I used to do a yearly reread but I lost steam a while ago. must say the portrayal of samsa was awful in both versions and in general narita has no idea what he's talking about when he tries to address antiblack racism in america. besides that, his treatmenf of racism in the novels overall feels very shallow and awkwardly done to me. but I do love his enthusiasm for mob movies and stuff, it really shines through and I always enjoyed his perspective and portrayal of new york. to the extent that I got excited in hs when we visited the city, lol. ah I miss my baccano liveblogging years
My favourite character: chane, claire, jacuzzi, nice, and firo/really hard to choose between all the incredible characters but my favorite character for only her novel appearance is ennis, and my favorite novel-only characters are probably rail (nonbinary traumatized scarred arsonist rly hit me) and nile (heart eyes)
My least favourite character: poet is rly annoying :/ christopher without fail is deeply hateful but only in his first appearance? after his first book he's fine. also I do not like novel firo lmao he's a better character with a lot more depth but he's a homophobic misogynist and he pisses me off. tim is boring. also renee fuck her. anime ladd is even worse than novel ladd and that's saying something
The character I think I’d be friends with: everyone would be friends with isaac and miria :) otherwise...hard to say. I'll go with nile because he's very straighforward and sincere like I hope to be and also he's very hot. oh and niki :( niki my girl. and chane and ennis too!
The character I think I won’t hit off with: FIRO. actually most of them tbh everyone is off the walls ad I would be afraid for my life
My favourite episode/scene: RAIL TRACER REVEAL/*googles novel titles* Grand Punk Railroad obvs, The Slash, Crack Flag is slightly messy but struturally brilliant, uhh for scenes I don't remember too many specifically but anything with claire and chane just makes me melt even tho they are slightly problematic. end of grand punk railroad with jacuzzi too! the anime got some of the greatest scenes from the novels in imo
Whose clothing style I like best: anyone in the 1930s arc plus monica. I LOVE 1930s style especially with the caps I think they're so neat. nothing in the 2000s I really disliked that arc. it contains every trope I hate for married couples and for romantic plots. even though I think it was rly well done and I love illness and the Reveal is Very Good
Times I watched it (and if I would again): 5 or 6 times?/ at least 5. idk if I'd watch the show again I kind of have it memorized and I like the novel plot more. I will definitely read the novels again we're just waiting on those last two books.
for anyone reading, I want to note that the baccano anime is extremely gory and contains depictions of torture, including child torture, fantasy cannibalism, child abuse, and gun/knife violence*
the light novels contain all these, plus fictional cults that abuse children, suicide, references to sexual assault and child sexual assault as backstory, and joking references to incest (thanks, 2002) - this is not comprehensive, it's been a few years. it's an intense series so stay safe if you're interested. I think a lot of the assault and cult topics are used for shock value tbh.
thanks for the ask! I miss it...I used to run this blog so if you want a detailed tag list to go through, it's essentially an archive at this point

2, 4, 5, 17, 18, 20?
2. first anime crush
Technically speaking, prolly Kagome from Inuyasha, but in fairness I was like 8 at the time and it was one of the few anime cartoons on early enough for me to watch.
Otherwise, prolly has to default to Riza Hawkeye from the first time I watched through Fullmetal Alchemist, since that was my gateway drug into anime.
4. least favorite anime character
Black Star from Soul Eater.
Gods, he’s such a good example on how NOT to writer a good character. He never learns, never changes, the one time it looks like he’ll have some character development, it’s ignored, and he never sees any consequences for it.
EXCALIBUR was less annoying than he was.
5. list all anime you have ever watched
Ah hell. Uh let’s see here…
Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Durarara!!
Baccano!
ufotable’s Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works
Fate/Zero
Fate/Apocrypha
Ajin
Knights of Sidonia
Polygon Pictures’ Godzilla trilogy
Code Geass
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Sword Art Online
Fairy Tail (incomplete)
Naruto (incomplete)
Darker Than Black
Mushishi
Mobile Suit Gundam: Unicorn
Trigun
Inuyasha (incomplete) (need to fix that)
Soul Eater
Rise of the Shield Hero
B: The Beginning (incomplete)
Pacific Rim: The Black
Deltora Quest (look I was like six at the time)
Outran High School Host Club
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
Revisions
Psycho-Pass
Moribito: Guardian Of The Spirit
Kill La Kill
Aldnoah.Zero (first season only)
BNHA (incomplete)
BNA (incomplete)
Dragon Pilot
Matantei Loki Ragnarok
Castlevania
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (incomplete)
Deadman Wonderland
Devilman Crybaby
Cowboy Bebop
One Punch Man
Steins;Gate
Noragami (incomplete)
Sonic X
17. biggest anime crush
Proooooobably Celty from DRRR!!
Otherwise it’s likely Saber from UBW.
…okay, badass women with kickass weapons and a strong moral compass are my type, okay?
18. 10 worst anime you have watched
Uh…hmm.
Okay I’ll list some of the ones I’ve quit, then, in no particular order:
Burst Angel (sorry @charlezarrd, but it was too much of a mess)
Elfen Lied (the opening episode alone speaks for itself. No fucking thank you. Not touching that with a ten-foot pole.)
One Piece (fucking Luffy’s the most irritating character ever, he’s worse than Naruto in my eyes)
Bleach (I tried, y’all. I tried hard with this one, too, but Ichigo’s just too damn boring. He’s better in the live-action adaptation where he can actually emote)
The Seven Deadly Sins (if they’d made Meliodas less of a creep and Elizabeth more useful and less of a standard damsel I’d have moved this series, but no, Meliodas had to be That One Character and it ruined everything, every time.)
Hellsing (made the mistake of thinking it would actually be amusing like the Abridged version, but no, it’s just bloody and kinda not great in terms of writing)
Attack on Titan (this is gonna make people mad, but the twists were obvious, I called the Titans as weapons of war instead of natural disasters, and Eren as a character is boring as heck outside of his powers, and I just couldn’t keep running with nothing to keep me interested for the first season. Levi, Eren, and Mikasa’s characters are frankly all wasted on that series, IMHO)
Blood of Zeus (seriously, they did NOTHING INTERESTING WITH THIS SHOW and had Zeus BE THE SAME HORNY BASTARD HE ALWAYS IS and somehow STILL FOUND A WAY TO MAKE HERA THE BAD GUY like WHAT the FUCK even Elias Toufexis as the lone sensible villain couldn’t save this series!)
Fate/Extra: Lost Encore (this falls prey to being Fate fodder. Sure, Cassandra Lee Morris as Nero is great…but also NERO is supposed to be the good one somehow, which…like…okay now the Saber twist isn’t even a twist anymore, it’s just you turning famous figures into blonde anime girls because it worked that one time. Aside from that there’s also very little actual PLOT for me to grab onto, and like…c’mon. It’s like they barely tried.)
Also I revisited Deltora Quest at one point and…I have no idea what 6-year-old-me was thinking. It’s terrible. Like. REALLY bad.
20. least favorite anime ships
I tend not to bash people for their ships, really, but like…I dunno something really rubs me the wrong way about the few folks I saw shipping Mao and CC from Code Geass.
Oh, and anyone that pairs Gilgamesh and Saber from UBW. The two despise each other. They would not make for a good pairing. Either Gilgamesh would need to acknowledge Saber as his equal (which he won’t, he refuses to the point of death in the series), or Saber will have to willingly become his plaything (which we ALSO see her resist to almost the point of death in the series), so I don’t get why people think that makes textual sense?
But again, I try not to actively bash people for shipping stuff. AUs are always a thing, after all, so…yeah. Whatever man. As long as nobody is hurting anyone over it, you do you.

Animes Watched Since Quarentine Started ~
So I just sat down and realized... I have developed a problem X’D  BUT it could be worse! So I figured I would share for those looking for something new to watch! Also, what have y’all been watching!?
Full list below the line + reviews! * No spoilers, I promise! I wouldn’t do you dirty like that! *  ;-*
1. Kakegurui
Tumblr media
This show took me by surprise, I had no idea gambling could be so thrilling! Plus let us take a moment to appreciate the facial expressions animated in this show! Beautiful, just beautiful. Beware though, this anime gets dark, and sick, and you will definitely forget to breath at times. It is a thorough joy.
2. Steins;Gate
Tumblr media
3. Steins;Gate 0
Tumblr media
Honestly, Steins;Gate + Stains; Gate 0 is one of the best animes I have EVER seen. Legit. Also, It is one of the best stories of time travel I have ever encountered. The way it is explained in the anime is brilliant! Compelling, thrilling, emotional, so much amazingness. I watched in chronological order instead of season order which I really enjoyed. Also one of the most moving anime endings I have seen. All the characters you will fall in love with, and their character development is one heck of a ride. A must watch, 100%.
4. Fullmetal Alchemist
Tumblr media
This was a nostalgia back flash for me! It was been years and I felt like reliving it all over again. Which I am glad I did, cus boy was there a lot of heavy themes and topics I did not pick up on when I was younger! One of the biggest themes was this existential undertone throughout the whole show that explored the ideas of humanity, authority, morality and race.
5. Fullmetal Alchemist Conqueror of Shamballa
Tumblr media
A must follow up to the original FMA series. It just ties the whole story up in a pretty bow. I remember when I first saw this movie, it was my first encounter this the idea of multiple dimensions and it just blew my mind. The whole this felt so exciting and surreal, and I loved the addition of our timeline playing a part. Watching FMA + Movie over again leaves me a bit torn on which is better, Brotherhood or first adaptation. I think both should be watched for a full understanding of the lore. The first anime series definitely has some holes and details missing, but it’s also so nostalgic and they really give you a better development of characters and feels than Brotherhood does, as they rush through that to get back to the main plot.... so grab some popcorn and watch both and just enjoy the ride :)
6. Angels of Death
Tumblr media
This anime has such a unique premise!! And morally it is just all sorts of twisted, which I love! The music is fantastic in it and all the characters you encounter are very unique and fun... it’s dark though, don’t get me wrong.. and twisted. BUT a fun ride if you are down for that kind of adventure!
7. Another
Tumblr media
WHOOOO BUDDY! If you want to go on a journey THIS IS ONE! It’s a mind bending premise and each episode ends in so much suspense. I literally could’ve watched the whole thing in one day. This anime is like a jar of Pringles, once you start you just can’t stop!
8. Death Parade
Tumblr media
This anime gets the prize for the most misleading opening ever! X’D But it is such a BOP Please watch if you can. The anime overall is a joy, its very thought provoking and touches on the darker topics of death and mortality. Who is really good? Who is evil? Where do they seamlessly blend into each other? Besides the premise being so unique and tantalizing, the artwork is breathtaking! The background and environments the characters exist in are gorgeous. As an artist and a writer, I appreciate this anime on so many levels.
9. Sekkou Boys
Tumblr media
Oh god, this anime is a joy. Just pure, clean joy T.T The episode are VERY short so you could finish the whole thing in an evening. But if you are an artist, a Renaissance history lover, or a J-pop fan, you will especially appreciate this joy of a creation. Watch it for your soul, you will feel better afterwards.
10. Kokoro Connect
Tumblr media
This is a very intriguing coming of age story to say the least. There is an element of fantasy/science fiction that comes into the picture that stirs all sorts of trouble for our dear group of friends. It makes you really reflect your own intra- and interpersonal relationships and how we perceive and interact with one another. Overall a fun trip to go on.
11. Occultic; Nine
Tumblr media
HOLD ONTO YOUR HORSES CUS THIS ANIME IS FAST! Omgsh, if you watch in Japanese like I did, get ready to have tired eyes cus the pace and speech of this anime is like nothing I have encountered before, but it is soooo much fun! It is mystery combined with the supernatural. It’s one of those animes where there is a lot of characters involved and some how everyone is connected in some way, like Baccano! if you have seen it. I would say to watch this AFTER you watch Steins;Gate if you have any interests because it is written by the same writers and there is little things that reference back to Steins;Gate which are really fun to pick up on.
12. School-Live!
Tumblr media
I didn’t know what to expect when I started this series. It is not the kind of art style I am normally drawn towards but I am soo glad I watched. The characters are all really fun and cute! Especially the puppy!! <3 You deal with psychological stress as well as a nice mix of slice of life all in the midst of a zombie apocalypse! It’s a combination I never knew I wanted in my life, but now I am glad I have it. Don’t let the cute animation style fool you... it gets DARK. I was full out trying not to sob at one point, but I think that just shows how many levels are involved in this story. Have fun with this ride my friends <3
13. My Hero Academia
Tumblr media
GUYS ARE YOU FREAKING READY!? This was the story I never knew I needed in my life, but now I don’t know how I lived without it. Dear god, I binged this one so hard I think I forgot to breath for a week. All of the characters are so dynamic and the overall tone of the series is so uplifting and positive. If you are in a depressive slump just turn this one on. I promise you, you will be smiling and feeling better in no time! It is so motivational as well. Humor, action, suspense, thrilling, emotional- I don’t think there is anything they don’t touch on. Uhg gosh, I could prob write a dissertation on all the themes and undertones expressed in this work. I promise you, this is a journey you will not regret taking <3
14. My Hero Academia: Two Heroes
Tumblr media
I’ll be honest, I think sometimes series’ movies miss the mark, or just feel lackluster, like a power hour of filler. This one my friends.... DID NOT. I was really glad I watched it too, because I felt as though it added so much to the main story line. Plus you get to see college years All Might... so bonus! X3 But seriously, it is a very fun movie and it gives you more background to the world you wouldn’t otherwise get.
15. Shiki
Tumblr media
First off... THE ART. This anime’s art is so unique and fits so well into the overall narrative. But honestly, I feel like this anime is a work of art, it feels like an old folk tale/dark fairy tale you would elders talking about in a pub late at night. The narrative never went where I expected it to, and by the end I was so morally conflicted I didn’t know what to do with myself. It’s a dark fantasy that really explores all the little nitty gritty grey areas that are often passed over in stories. There were definitely a few scenes that made me so uncomfortable I was squirming. Human nature is truly a sight to behold, and this anime shows it to you.
16. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Tumblr media
The Feudal Japan- Post apocalyptic- Steam punk journey you never knew existed! Gosh this anime is amazing. First off the art is breathtaking and many scenes reminded me of Miyazaki. Second, the music is SO GOOD. It’s a concept on the undead that I find to be very unique and truly thrilling. Most of the anime takes place on a train which is such an intriguing element. You also go into human fear of the unknown and how our nature can truly be our biggest hindrance. The characters are great and you get to the point of really rooting for them. Get ready for this feast for your senses!
17. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress Movie: Battle of Unato
Tumblr media
After watching the series I felt like my heart was still missing something. Honestly the whole thing felt like it went by too fast. I still wanted more! This movie helped fill the void in my heart. You get to see relationship begin to form between characters as well as more insight into kabane and all their abilities. Standing alone, this movie is a really fun adventure and gives more insight into the state Japan is in overall.
So THERE YOU HAVE IT! I hope you might have found some new things to watch. I would love to see others lists of things they have watched, feel free to leave in the comments! Or if you have watched any of these, I would love to hear your thoughts! Let’s chat <3
