The question, Do you believe in miracles? was redundant in the Encanto. Of course every resident of their hidden valley believed in miracles and believed in magic: a miracle saved them so long ago and magical blessings were the norm with los Madrigals at the helm.

Julieta lived under the protection of a miracle born from her father’s sacrifice and her mother’s need. Sappy as it may have sounded, she believed each of her daughters was a blessing, magic or no magic. It was a miracle of its own to have such a wonderful family.

But magic and miracles came with prices: stress, responsibility, fear…Her brother vanishing for ten long years.

A curse for Julieta, such a personal one, as if the fates contrived to come up with a special torture for her. What better way to break her heart than to tear apart her family?

"Okay. You got this."

Camilo took a deep breath, and for the first time in his life, he was nervous to go inside a bakery. He fumbled with the flowers in his hands, finding the feel of the petals against his fingers comforting. He counted to three in his head, before just making himself go in. There was a couple guys in here already, but he knew he couldn't wait for them to leave. He approached the counter, sort of ignoring the guy right next to him. Dulce looked up from her notepad, probably taking this guy's order, before scoffing.

"Go away."

"Dulce listen-"

"No I mean get in line. Or is everything about YOU, like always? If you're that impatient, you can even go get your mami to stand in for you."

Camilo opened his mouth to retort, before he figured he deserved that. He sighed, and got to the back of the line. The guy gave him a look, and was just about to continue his order, when Camilo butted in again. It was a small shop, so he didn't have to he loud to be heard.

"She wanted me to tell you she was sorry, by the way. She wanted to come, but I thought you didn't want to see her right now."

Dulce ignored him for a moment, but upon seeing Camilo poke his face out from the side, she groaned.

"I'm so sorry Señor, some people think because they have EVERYTHING, everyone else needs to stop and listen. Just the cake then?"

The guy, looking really uncomfortable, looked tempted to step away from the situation all together.

"I could uh, come back later?"

"No no. He's just being an idiot. You wait here, I'll get it from the back."

Camilo did NOT like the glare she gave him as she went to the back. The guy behind him raised a brow at him.

"So uh. Lady troubles?"

"Pretty much. I mean, she's mad that my mom wants to spend loads of time with us. And I just-"

"Do you think it's that, or she's upset that she's not getting enough time with YOU?"

Camilo opened his mouth to tell him to mind his business, before it clicked. Holy shit. She was upset because she wanted HIM, not because she disliked his mom. Camilo cut the line again, just in time for her to come back with a cake in her hands. She was about to tell him to move back, but he cut her off.

"I'm sorry, okay? I messed up. I know my relationship with my mom is the opposite of yours. Yours is cold and abrasive, mine is kinda clingy-"

"Kinda?"

"Okay, a LOT clingy. My point is, I was wrong to assume you were worrying over nothing. I care about my mom, and she cares about me, but I need to make room for you, and JUST you. Whatever it takes to make up for this, name it, I'll do it."

She gave him a judgemental look, genuinely considering it, before folding her arms across her chest.

"Alright. You wanna make it up to me? You really and honestly do?"

"Yes!"

"Then you're gonna have to prove it. And flowers aren't gonna cut it."

Camilo put the flowers on the counter, putting his hands up in defense.

"You name it. Whatever you want."

"You're taking me to the market tomorrow. It's gonna be just me and you. And you're gonna buy just ME chocolate."

"You don't even LIKE chocolate that much!"

"No. But you like me, don't you?"

Oh this was gonna kill him. The idea of NOT bringing for his mom, seeing her smile enough to have rainbows. This was gonna be tough. But he'd have his mami for life. But Dulce was a once and a lifetime deal. He took a deep breath, and nodded.

"I do. Alright. I'll pick you up tomorrow at your place. Get whatever you want."

"I'll believe it when I see it. Thank you for the flowers."

And that was it. She pushed them to the side, and continued to work. Camilo decided to walk out, and he groaned into his hands as he leaned against the building. For once in his life, he was going to have to NOT let his mami spend time with him.

Maybe she was too hard on him. She didn't know why she felt as guilty as she did, but she did. He WAS right, no two mothers were alike, maybe she was really ruining something between them. It's why she was ready to apologize the second she walked up to the Casita's front door. She rang the doorbell, and felt slight relief upon seeing Félix. Félix was a GREAT guy, the closest thing to a father figure she could hope to get.

"Dulce, mija, there you are! Come in, you want some tea?"

"No thank you, I kinda wanted to be in and out, don't wanna bump into Pepa. Not that I don't love Pepa! I just-"

Félix put his hand on her hip as he walked her in, gently holding his hand up as a signal to stop her.

"Don't need to explain, I understand. You just wait here, I'll go get Camilo."

Félix went upstairs to go get Camilo, and she sighed. Maybe she should just leave. She was tempted to, when SHE came up to her, looking as happy as could be.

"Dulce! There you are! You look so pretty! You ready to go?"

Of course he didn’t keep his promise. She gave an uncomfortable smile as she nodded, hoping her hurt couldn't be seen by Camilo as he walked down the stairs.

"You gonna see us off, mami?"

"Oh no, I'm going with you! You told me you were going to go shopping!"

Camilo winced uncomfortably, gazing towards both Dulce and Pepa, before he spoke up enough to interrupt her.

"You're not coming. This is for me and Dulce. It's a date."

Pepa looked shocked, and Dulce was sure she looked the exact same. She gripped onto her shopping back, looking like a child who has just been told no.

"Are you sure? I can be quiet or-"

"Yes I'm sure. I don't want you to come with us this time, okay?"

It hurt Camilo to say this, she could tell. Rain clouds sprinkled over Pepa, and Félix was about to spring into action, when Pepa took a deep breath, and nodded. The clouds disappeared, and Pepa looked calm.

"Okay. You two go have fun. Be back before dark though, alright?"

"Got it. Come on."

Camilo offered his arm to her, and she accepted it, a bit confused as to what just happened. When the front door closed behind them, she looked at his clearly uncomfortable face, honestly a bit worried.

"Cami you...good?"

"Yeah. I was just. Expecting a LOT more resistance than that. I spent like half an hour hyping myself up and that's. All I got? I was expecting a thunderstorm."

Dulce chuckled, nudging him with her shoulder.

"Just means she's growing up, like you. I'm not gonna lie, I was expecting you to kinda bail on your promise."

"I couldn't. I'm...serious about you. I want you to trust me. Besides, you were right, I was wrong."

Dulce grinned, cupping a hand over her ear.

"Wait, wait, hold up. Say that again, once more. Slow."

"Don't act like you didn't hear me, perra."

She leaned in to kiss his cheek, leaving a big white kiss mark on his skin.

"Thank you, Cami."

"Yeah yeah yeah...now come on, I need new clothes too. Underwear especially."

"Why did you just openly tell me that?"

"Because you're trying not to laugh, and I like that look on you."

He rested his head on her shoulder, and she couldn't help but chuckle. So they were different people with different families. That didn't matter. What mattered, was that they'd try for each other.

So, if a new magical door can actually start to form pretty much as soon as a Madrigal gets pregnant, Casita knows when new family members are coming. I have to wonder whether there would be any sort of similar indication for adopted children.

something about hysterical women

Encanto has invaded my brain again and I just want to talk about how it's pretty clearly implied that the hysterical, anxious, loudmouth Pepa has done a MUCH better job of protecting her kids from Abuela's bullshit than the nice, peacable, ideal mom Julieta.

All three Mental Breakdown Songs are from Julieta's children. Now this could be argued to be because they're the protagonist and her immediate siblings, but no - Mirabel goes to DOLORES for intel, it's Dolores who sends her to Luisa. And Antonio, a little child who grew up after Mirabel in a much more anxious environment of "WILL the next kid get the gift?", loves Mirabel and doesn't think less of her and is only a little scared but gets his gift just fine!

(Now, I personally subscribe to the theory Mirabel only "didn't get" hers because it 100% overlapped with Abuela's - her gift was the Casita itself, subtly illustrated by the way Casita listens to Abuela and Mirabel in a way it isn't really shown to listen to others. All the kids got their gifts from what they most wanted and loved, and to Mirabel the thing she loved most was her family and what she wanted most was to be useful and helpful to it. But anyway)

Camilo is a little shit whose gift has no clear useful applications, but he displays 0 signs of any kind of inferiority complex or being pressured the way Julieta's kids were pressured. He does what he does, and it's Fine. Dolores is a keeper of many secrets and seems to be pretty scared of ending up like Bruno, but she doesn't. (She is also my favorite most beloved blorbo in the movie, but anyway)

Something about - conflict aversion vs conflict very much non-aversion. Julieta speaks softly and backs down when Abuela insists. Pepa doesn't hold back from yelling at her when her demands are insufferable from Pepa's point of view. Julieta's gift is immediately useful and easy to share with the community, she fits into Abuela's ideal vision easily; Pepa's gift is a problem for people around her as much as it is a boon, and it looks like she's waging a lifelong war for her right to have emotions at all. I can only imagine Pepa's reaction if Abuela tried to talk shit to any of HER kids (thunder and lightning included).

Just - conflicts and protection.

So, here, we have a section where I was figuring out how to draw Leandra ';D I still am, somehow I can't seem to 'get' her features but I hope I will eventually!

The last picture features my two oc's: Dioselina and Daniela. Dioselina is the one challenging Leandra to an arm wrestling match and Daniela is at the back with Augustín both rooting for their respective friends :)

Ooh! Good one. Quickly, I have to share this story because I love Encanto. Jessica Darrow (The voice of Luisa) did a virtual celeb visit at the children’s hospital that I work at. A couple employees got to ask her a question (I was lucky and got picked!) I asked her what power she would want from the movie and she said she wanted the power to talk to animals. Like, I love that for her. Anyway, one of the kiddos asked her to sing Surface Pressure and she had them sing it with her and I thought I was going to cry (it meant so much to the kid! T^T) I love Encanto sm. Now, on to the ask!

Alcina:

She can tell that the song is a bop, but 3 problems: She don’t know what it’s from, she don’t know who Bruno is, and she don’t know how long she can keep listening to Y/N sing “A seven-foot frame, rats along his back” (That’s their favorite part and they just sing it over and over) Please, Y/N. Vampire Mommy has a headache. Knock it off.

Donna:

When Y/N gets to the part that Isabella sings, they always insist that the character reminds them of Donna because she can control plants (And is fucking gorgeous, but I digress). Donna sort of understands what Y/N is getting at, but she’s never seen the movie. Y/N makes it a point to not only watch the film with Donna a few times, but also lay out an entire damn character analysis of Isabella so the doll maker can get a better picture. Donna’s too polite to say anything, but in her head she thinks Y/N is a complete idiot… easy to love though…

Miranda:

Miranda is done with Y/N’s bullshit. Seriously Y/N, Miranda kidnapped a baby, broke her into fucking pieces and has literally killed thousands of people… Either sleep with one eye open or quit singing “I associate him with the sound of falling sand” with weird intensity on repeat. It’s for your own good.

Bela:

Bela likes music. Like, a lot. She studies it. Like, a lot. But the thing is, she primarily listens to classical and opera. She doesn’t know what to do with a catchy Pop Salsa tune. Like, what meter is this song in? How many styles have been incorporated? Is that polyphony she hears? (What a nerd oh my goddd) Y/N just wants her to enjoy it without getting caught up in the theory of it all… Maybe with time she’ll get better at doing that?

Update: She’s currently ripping her hair out trying to analyze the song. Y/N hasn’t slept in days ‘cause she won’t shut up about her research… And that’s what you get for being a nuisance all the time, Y/N XD

Cassandra:

Cassandra is a logical person. She sees a problem? (Like Y/N singing at the top of their lungs) She fixes it. Y/N better not complain. Cass originally wanted to cut out their tongue, but Dani suggested she try this first. Honestly, Y/N is beating the odds on how they’ve been able to survive this long… maybe they should go out and buy a lottery ticket… Or go stand on top of the castle to see if they can get struck by lightning.

Daniela:

Nobody screeches Encanto songs harder than Dani. The noise level gets so loud in the castle when Y/N and Dani sing together that Alcina throws them in the dungeon for a few hours to let them both get it out of their systems. They always end up having brutal sex once they’re down there though… Alci learned that the hard way. One time she walked in and saw Y/N kissing their way up Daniela’s body to the rhythm of “Bruno no, no” while Dani sang, called them a hoe and spit on them… These two nasty.

Julieta took Bruno’s right hand and Pepa took his left.

Pepa held her hand out to Félix. “You might wanna hang on,” she said.

He took her hand and Agustín’s; Julieta took Agustín’s other hand. Bruno looked grimly determined. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes.

The sand shifted and flickered with streaks of green. All at once, it rose around them, swirling in a circle, rising higher and higher until they were encased in a dome. The green flashes grew, streaking across the dark dome like lightning.

“Holy shit,” Félix whispered.

Agustín’s mouth was hanging open, but Pepa and Julieta looked at their brother. When Bruno’s eyes opened, they were even brighter than before. When he opened his eyes, the future appeared before them.

Flick overhears a conspiracy. Bruno has one last prophecy and things quickly go from bad to worse.

do i have more firefighter bullshit already? yea. we had kind of a way too much screen time kind of day and i literally could not watch encanto at the hollywood bowl one more time. it was a gamble, but luckily fire engines are a big hit in this household!

listen the funny thing about these christmas episodes is that my husband texted me a bit ago about working on a holiday saying that the other wives were looking for my phone number because they wanted to plan a dinner at the station and was like "unfortunately it's too late to pretend like you don't exist :("

(i didn't even end up getting texted because my husband ended up getting moved stations for that holiday because he was needed ~elsewhere)

if they don't want us to ship buddie, buddie should not be having deep conversations about their son.

and oh no!! eddie's leaving! (actually irl my understanding is that if a firefighter is married/has kids with another firefighter they do tend to have to work different shifts on account of the whole. 24 hour shift dealie and needing childcare for that. so if buddie ever were to get married that should be a consideration. it also adds a lot of extra strain on the relationship given you only see them like. 1/3 of the year.)

bobby all "my bosses want to know why i haven't filled the empty slots on my roster" and while. once again that's not bobby's job (it's the chief's & the city's) and i know we're waiting for eddie and chimney to come back, as a concerned taxpaying citizen who is paying taxes so that the city can provide me with public services such as the fire department i am also curious as to why one of the stations i'm paying the city for is not functioning at full capacity. will this affect anything if i need to utilize those services. inquiring minds need to know.

you know what fic needs to written. the one where a lady goes to a fire council meeting with facts and figures and statistics to ask these very important questions.

ah, eddie calling out bobby and telling him to go to hell. eddie you're so unwell right now, but i support you.

okay i am living for the lady buck kissed getting moved to the 118 because it reminds me so much of the scandal of these two people on my husband's department having an affair. whenever they were station they would have sex in the bathroom. there was technically no regulation against it. their coworkers knew what was going on. they would sit there like 😬😬😬 when the two would disappear.

the day it went public and the whole department found out was quite a day. my husband was on the phone for a loooong time gossiping. (see also: transfer day!)

based on teeth jee-yun has to be about a year now, one would think.

okay boston is a very good episode. they did well. no snark. except maybe there seems to be a lot of stuff in that pack and play she was sleeping in. i guess if she's over a year it's not the worst.

i do think it's interesting that chimney's friend moved from the lafd to boston and got in there. it's my understanding that it's almost impossible to get on boston if you don't live there.

okay back to snark. 1) jee-yun is waaaay too big for that infant car seat. there needs to be at least an inch between the top of the carseat and the head of the child and she looks veery close (also, who has a one year old still in the bucket seat?? christ. that thing gets sooo heavy as they get older. just get the convertible, most babies start to find the bucket seat uncomfortable as they get bigger anyways) why are you feeding the baby in the car seat, sit her at the table 3) why is she strapped into the car seat and pleasant about when maddie is visiting buck. that baby should be screaming to get out and explore.

wait wait wait wait. taylor's supposedly the bad guy? buck kissed another woman, didn't cop to it and instead asked her to move in, then finally admitted to it and admitted that it was partially because of that. oh wait. i guess they get over that.

oh eddie. you are not doing well. i hate to admit bobby's right, ever, but you are not fit for duty as you are right now. (you'll get there one day <3. up to a third of firefighters develop ptsd.)

aw, albert lost the mustache and is quitting. tragic.

ah, i see. taylor wants to run the jonah story.

and wow..chimney has been through a lot. a lot. probably more than anyone else here.

ah, so this is why everyone hates taylor. for betraying the 118. and now, see. i understand that what she did was shitty journalistic ethics (you, don't say off the record and then decide to run the story anyways). but also in the day of multicounty scanner facebook pages, i guarantee even if the press and everyone else would have found out about 5 seconds later. and the fire department would have sent out an immediate press release with a preliminary newsbrief about the situation and cooperating with the authorities. anyways, slighty shitty but frankly buck's kiss was way more of a personal betrayal so i'm gonna call them even. buck is an adult. and taylor was right. he did know who she was when they started dating.

anyways, i am so excited for buck to die next season xxx (i hear he walks it off, it's k)

DuckTales Character Songs! (Part 1)

I’ve been trying to come up with something unique to do here on Tumblr. And it always sorta came back to this. A couple reasons. 1. I had my own radio show in college, so I already know what it’s like to try and nail songs down for what you want to convey. 2. Last year, I did a bunch of playlists for Weblena Week, and I’d say it worked out pretty well.

So, I give to you: my list of DuckTales character songs! Now, I’m going to be sticking to one song per character, ones that I feel suit them very well. I’m going to start out here with the 9 principal characters, then major recurring characters from each of the seasons, totaling out to 4 parts in all.

Of course, I can’t take all the credit here. I’ve done a fair amount of brainstorming on this before with @glowyjellyfish. That said, let’s get started!

Scrooge McDuck

Money (That’s What I Want) by Barrett Strong

The song is kinda self-explanatory. Scrooge is one of the richest ducks in the world. He has an entire building for all of his savings. Plus, this sums up his mindset at the beginning of the series really well, before he really let himself open back up to his family. And this version of the song just has the right swaggering vibe to it. Also, RIP Barrett Strong.

Huey Duck

Surface Pressure by Jessica Darrow from Encanto

Just like Luisa Madrigal, Huey has all of this pressure on his shoulders as the oldest sibling. Trying to live up to expectations. He wants to show Dewey and Louie that he has it all together, but sometimes, he just doesn’t. It all builds up until it’s ready to blow.

Dewey Duck

Hall of Fame by The Script feat. will.i.am

Dewey is a very grandiose character. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was his daily mantra or something. “You could be the greatest, you can be the best, you can be the King Kong banging on your chest.” He wants to be seen. He wants to be a legend.

Louie is ambitious. He wants to climb to the top of the food chain. He wants to rule the world. He knows it’s not going to be easy, he’ll have a lot of competition, but he won’t let it stop him.

This one has definitely struck me as a Webby-ish song for some time. Seeing this song from her point of view, I’d say she’s kinda facing her past (“You held me down, but I got up”). She’s been sheltered for most of her life, and now that she has all these new opportunities, she’s going to break out and take them.

Donald Duck

Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra

This song is appropriate for Donald in two ways. One, the fact that he was stuck on the moon during the second half of Season 2. And two, his relationship with Daisy. After all, it is kind of a love song, too. Plus, I can totally see Daisy envisioning Donald singing like Sinatra, considering that one scene in Louie’s Eleven!

Bentina Beakley

Have You Got It in You? by Imogen Heap

At least in my opinion, it’s tough to find songs that really fit Mrs. Beakley. But I think this song definitely works for her. A lot of the time, Beakley tries to keep everything together, but she has to deal with a ton of bullshit on the daily, so it can be hard. I think the line “Let me have it all, let me have a battle on. Easy target, look, can we just, just get it over with?” suits her because of her spy background, and the fact that sometimes, all she probably wants to do is snap on somebody, get it out of the way, and get back to her task at hand.

Launchpad McQuack

Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra

I think the title is very appropriate, considering that Launchpad is a pilot. I think the tone of the song, as well as a few of the lyrics, very much suit his carefree personality. Even though he doesn’t always keep his eye ahead, Launchpad likes flying or driving around without a care in the world. Especially with Mr. Blue Sky out and about.

Della Duck

Got to Fly by Marian Call

This song perfectly sums up Della’s desire to go to the stars, then being stuck on the moon, having the consequences of what she did hit her all at once, and then having her mind racing at 1,000 miles an hour over all the things she needs to do, especially after she gets back home (ADHD struggles).

So that’s it for now! Next time around, I’ll be doing major recurring characters initially from Season 1. In the meantime, let me know what you think of these!

Huge lore dump- prologue

Okay, this is going over backstories and the kraang/Oroku clan with some more character added into Shredder

I had to make a whole new folder in my notes app just to put this all together 💀

Warning for IDW-compliant violence

Kraang-

So there’s a place called dimension X, and two alien races live there, the Utroms and the Triceratons. They’re fighting a war for territory, and an Utrom was making bio weapons when boom, something went wrong!

They were turned into a creature called a kraang, and they turned most of the Utroms into kraang too, and they formed a hive mind as they swept through the triceratons and made the remaining army flee

The kraang then are trying to expand their hive mind, and they’re incredibly stupid but they have mutagen, which is ridiculously dangerous because it mutates anything organic with the last dna it touched, and it’s horribly unstable

They find earth and are like “yooo let’s pick this one” and they’re just trying to figure out how to adjust human life to their hive mind, resulting in so many experiments. Just, experiments EVERYWHERE

Shredder-

In Kyoto Japan in the 1960s or so, two historical ninja clans were fighting each other still, the Hamato and Oroku clans (I’m calling the foot clan the Oroku clan because I can’t take feet seriously)

The main guy from the Hamato clan, Hamato Yuuta, won and essentially massacred the whole Oroku clan but refused to kill an infant who was now an orphan, and he adopted him instead, and named him Hamato Saki

He was raised with his biological son, Yoshi, and the two grew up inseparable

As they got older though, Saki started to notice the favoritism his brother got and the way the older people were wary towards him, and he was like “what the heck guys I didn’t do anything??”

And Yoshi was a little shit btw, just an asshole who was getting all the attention because he was the heir to the Hamato clan, which Saki thought was bullshit because he didn’t deserve it

Also, ninpo! Ninpo in this universe is just found family superpowers you get if you’re in the Hamato family, like, encanto but Japanese instead of Colombian

Saki had fire, but he could never control it well due to the stress surrounding his family and the lack of trust in him, while Yoshi had healing, which he was good at.. but mostly used on himself to fuck around and be dumb

In comes Tang Shen! A lady from Fukuoka who may or may not have connections to yokai, she and Yoshi fell for each other HARD, and they got married and they were happy and stuff, and had a daughter, Miwa

Now, they sorta start fighting over wether or not to move away, Tang Shen wanted her daughter to live a normal childhood instead of being a relic of the past, and Yoshi just really liked the clan

Saki figures out what happened to his family. He’s not pleased.

He tells Shen, who’s genuinely sympathetic and seems to be on his side! He mentions a coup and that he should kill the Hamato clan back and she’s like “NO????”

He does so anyway, and he gathers everyone on his side to overthrow the Hamato clan, and he attacks Yoshi in his house, and in the fight Saki starts a fire that quickly becomes unstable

Shen sees the fire and she has Miwa with her, she panics and puts Miwa on the ground and runs into the building to help

Shen gets accidentally killed by Saki, and both of them panic as the fire gets worse, and they’re both presumed dead by the other

Before Saki passes out from smoke inhalation, he sees four human kids carry what he thought was Yoshi’s body out and see them leave him as he yells to them

When Saki gets out, he sees Miwa on the ground and is like “Hm, this isn’t symbolic at all,” and he adopts her, naming her Oroku Karai

Yoshi, who’s left without his wife, daughter, home, and literally everything, he immigrated to America for a new start

..that didn’t particularly pan out the greatest, but he has 4 turtle sons now and he’s ratatouille

Kirby O’Neil-

He was some dude who moved to Massachusetts after having his daughter with his wife, May. Things seemed normal in their cabin in Northampton, when May started acting more erratically and then some weird aliens showed up and took May and tried to take April

Kirby fled with April (who was 6) back to New York, and met back up to Arnold Jones, his friend since high school, who was struggling horribly after the passing of his wife (not an excuse for the way he treated Casey) and he sort of tried to find a new normal.

In current day, Kirby has essentially become Casey’s dad and he’s considered family
