I slowed down the scene from "Aftermath" with poor, scared Echo in the Medical Ward. Some of his frightened faces are heartbreaking.

“Please don’t.”
Read here on Ao3!
Febuwhump 2024 | Day 19 | Prompt 19: “Please don’t.”
Rated: G | Words: 497 | Summary: Set during Season 1 Episode 1 “Aftermath” [Character Focus: Crosshair, Omega, *other Batchers mentioned*]
Crosshair has experienced headaches. More than his fair share with his optical enhancement. While they were never near as severe as Hunter’s over the years, he’d learned to take them in stride, work through the pain. But this time is different. It is insistent. A sharp, isolated pain that feels as though a blade is being driven through his skull. It’s putting him on edge.
Well, this and Hunter.
Hunter has been off since Kaller with his blatant disregard for their purpose. They were created to serve, not question orders because of political changes in the senate. Republic or Empire…it didn’t matter. Shouldn’t matter.
They’re soldiers. That hasn’t changed.
And now they’ve been arrested for treason. Because of Hunter. Because of that girl that stepped into their proximity at the most inconvenient time.
He sits down on the bench, digging his fingertips into the side of his head where the pain is driving him mad. He doesn’t notice that the girl sits down next to him until she speaks.
“You’re angry.”
He is caught off guard, glances down at her in surprise before catching himself. He sneers, “How perceptive.”
She is unaffected by his tone, staring up at him with a sad, deliberate gaze. “I know what you’re going to do, but please…don’t.”
“What do you know?” Crosshair asks sarcastically.
She takes the question seriously. “I know…it’s not your fault.” She puts a hand on his shoulder, a comforting touch. “You can’t help it.”
He is taken aback. Wants to ask what she means, what she knows. Because she does, he realizes. She knows something. She understands. He doesn’t know how or why, but she does.
He is taken away before he can ask.
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
It’s excruciating at first; however, the pain goes numb. His mind goes numb. The sensation is better than the alternative. But it’s not.
Please don’t.
Crosshair is given back his armor, told his brothers escaped holding, and ordered to track them down. Arrest them. Rampart and Tarkin read his report from Kaller, they know it wasn’t his fault – it was Hunter’s decision. Hunter’s orders. Crosshair will be given leniency, as long as he continues to demonstrate his loyalty to the Empire.
He can do that.
He can do what Hunter couldn’t.
He can make his brothers understand that there’s another way, another path, besides the one they are blindly following Hunter down. Hunter is spiraling. Hunter doesn’t know, doesn’t understand.
Please…don’t.
It doesn’t take a genius to know where his brothers will go, to anticipate their plan.
But his brothers don’t listen.
They’re traitors.
To the Empire.
To him.
Please.
Don’t.
He shoots Wrecker.
Tries to shoot the others.
Not to kill. To incapacitate. He’d never kill his brothers. But these aren’t his brothers anymore. They are traitors.
Don’t.
Don’t.
Don’t.
Please.
They escape. Narrowly. Like they always do. Did. Together.
Apart.
He watches the Marauder leave him behind.
They left him behind.
The traitors. His brothers.
Please, don’t.

Day 1 of 30 Days of The Bad Batch
Season 1, Episode 1: Aftermath
Alright. Let's dive into, probably, my favorite episode of the series so far. It's just such a great opening to the characters and the story. What a way to open a series right at Order 66. I just knew we were in for such a rollercoaster from the start of this show. Really, Order 66? That's where you're starting off the show? Force, have mercy on us all.
The biggest gem of this episode is that it's the only one we get where we get to see Hunter, Echo, Tech, Wrecker, and Crosshair just be a squad together. If I had my wish, I would have liked to have seen more of that before Crosshair and the rest of the batch split off. It was harder to see what the loss of Crosshair did to the team on an emotional and military tactics level. We didn't get much in the way of their team dynamic apart from Crosshair just being known as the surly, grumpy one. While I do love all the theories around how it was likely Echo who stepped into the role that Crosshair had like like being the peacekeeper between Tech and Wrecker's, it would have been nice to see more of that so we had an idea of what the Batch lost.
I've put my live musings of the episode under this thread for the sake of my followers. Sorry, not sorry!! Ya'll knew what you were getting into following me 👀
Not sure if anyone else is interested in doing this but if you're also re-watching TBB before the season 3 premiere be sure to tag all your musings in the #30 Days of The Bad Batch so I can read them!!
@floundrickthewayfarer @saturn-sends-hugs @the-bi-space-ace
First off, Captain Grey, I wish we had gotten to know you more before your chip activated because you seem like a sassy and salty man. I'm sure you and Rex swapped lots of stories.
Wee Kanan. I remember watching this the first time and having just finished Rebels. I saw and heard Kanan and literally said, "Oh, shit. Please no!! This is so mean." Good times. Good times.
So at what point did they realize they could use Echo's scomp as a melee weapon? It is so badass.
Oooff. That shot of the large canyon separating Kanan and Hunter that symbolizes the break between clone and Jedi *chefs kiss*
I really wish we had more scenes take place in TBB's barracks. So many fun details to dissect.
Will never get over Tech's matter-the-fact "My exceptional mind." Legend.
LOL. Echo's put-out expression when Wrecker notes how ugly Palpatine is! I've never noticed that.
Wonder how well the clones are informed in intergalactic politics. Echo seems to have a real knowledge of the larger political nuance more than the others. He is the first to openly question clones as soldiers of the Empire versus the Republic. I assume the Kaminoans would not have spent a lot of time educating clones on political structures and more on just being compliant with the system they were born into. For most clones, the transition from republic to empire is more or less just a name change, but Echo clearly takes issue with the implications.
Battle simulation time! Honestly, I could watch a whole series of clones just bantering and comming each other in battle. Such a fun, creative way to learn about characters and see them interact with each other. Wrecker and Tech sniping at each other is the best thing ever.
ALSO, Hunter why you whistling at them? You got comms for a reason you dramatic punk.
The implication that Crosshair also cried after seeing a fully stocked armory is just...I need that footage.
I never noticed that most, if all the weapons the Onderon insurgents have are Republic-issued.
Omega liking the batch's smelly barracks? Yeah, she's one of them.
Freaking Tarkin. I'm assuming he was just going to fry all their brains to make the whole batch compliant. Ugh. Poor Crosshair.
Oh, Shock troopers. Worst jobs with the worst rap. Do you think we will get to see Commander Fox in the last season? 🤞🏽
"You were down!" Echo has the best sense of humor.

"DON'T!"
Tumblr media
A lot of people seem to be under the impression that Hunter is not a good brother. He left Crosshair. He sold Echo. He endangered Omega. But let's not forget this scene.
The whole time Crosshair is firing on Caleb Dume on Kaller, Hunter is trying to talk him down except for right here. He isn't yelling "DON'T!" to Crosshair. He's yelling it at Caleb.
Caleb has chosen to stop running, stand his ground, and fight for his life at this point. Hunter has seen Jedi fight. He knows this is a dangerous situation. The boy is a grieving, terrified mess and Hunter chooses to confront him anyway in the face of Crosshair being attacked knowing full well that the young Jedi will likely attack him with deadly force next.
He doesn't seem like such a bad brother to me.

Hunter’s Lies and Leadership in Aftermath
(Plus some misc thoughts)
Decided to do a quick little rewatch of Aftermath yesterday morning, and noticed something I haven’t paid attention to before.
(First, I have to say that one of my favorite moments out of the entire series is the first exchange between Hunter and Crosshair when Cross is still in his right mind—“Crosshair, let’s get these tanks moving!” “Sir, yes sir.” Just brings a smile to my face at their lighthearted snarkiness every time. These are their real, unburdened personalities. Ones we haven’t gotten to see since.)
As for what I noticed, I realized how much Hunter lies throughout the episode, and easily. His wartime leadership skills are at their strongest here, the easy, confident, calling-the-shots tone that designates his position as squad leader. He knows his men, he knows what they’re capable of, and he knows what needs to be done in order to accomplish a goal. He’s tactical, perceptive, quick thinking and responsive to what is happening around him even as he is also internally processing things that don’t make sense to him. (This is in stark contrast to his reserve and indecisiveness in season 2, which I’ll save for another post).
However, as close knit as the group is, and as honest as we know the Batch is and that Hunter is not intentionally manipulative, he immediately, easily, and without hesitation lies multiple times. The first time is to protect Caleb as he leaps over the waterfall and Crosshair then comes up asking where he went.
“Where’s the Jedi?”
“I stunned him when he jumped. He didn’t make it.”
Hunter knows something is up with Crosshair, though he doesn’t know what. And he wants Caleb to be safe. But his instant response is a straight up lie and he doesn’t even waver in delivering it. He furthers the lie on their return home when Crosshair questions him about it. He knows Crosshair doesn’t believe him but he’s not ready to open that can of worms mid flight.
He lies again when they land back on Kamino and a shock trooper asks him if they have a problem with what’s going on. This time though he stutters and is much less convincing in his delivery, I think both because he’s becoming more and more confused at what is going on, and also because he’s now lying to authority and could actually face consequences if he doesn’t give the “right” answer. Regardless, it’s interesting that his nerves shine through here but not when he’s talking to his squad, who would know much more quickly his tells and attitudes than a random trooper would.
His next lie is to Tech during the briefing by Palpatine to all of the clone troopers. This is the first time for this show that we see how Tech pays attention to Hunter’s reactions, and when Hunter sees Omega for the first time, Tech asks him what he sees, and Hunter says “nothing” when he realizes that Omega has disappeared.
He also sort of half lies to Omega when they leave for Onderon, telling her that a mission is a mission and that it’s nothing to worry about. He’s churning inside though. He knows none of this make sense. But of course he’s not going to tell a kid that, he wants to comfort her and make her feel at ease.
All of this makes me wonder—is this something Hunter was used to doing? Is he so used to being the leader who holds everyone together, with no one for him to really turn to, that he’ll do whatever needs to be done to keep the peace or complete their mission objective, even if it means lying to his brothers in the moment? Or is this newer for him and he’s using it as a way to cope with the sudden shift in the situations they are dealing with?
And then Saw Gerrera says something interesting when they’re trying to apprehend him on Onderon. He says to Hunter as the leader of the group specifically:
“Take a look at the group of insurgents you were sent to destroy. Makes you wonder what else they’re lying about.”
Now, I’m not saying that Hunter took this to mean “oh man I gotta stop lying to my crew because that’s what the empire is doing to us and that’s no way to lead.” But, he doesn’t lie anymore through the rest of this episode, nor in the next one. I’d have to watch through the series again to remember if there are any other occasions of him directly lying to the Batch (vs to a stranger to keep them safe). There does seem to be a shift in his demeanor after this though. And Saw’s words seem to help him coalesce his thoughts because he quickly comes to the decision that they are going to get Omega and then desert, and he doesn’t hide this from any of the Batch members, not even Crosshair.
Side note 1: This episode also has some really beautiful indications of how much Hunter cares too: him saying “nice work” to Crosshair after their training session, him yelling “no!” when Caleb and Crosshair are fighting because he’s worried about either of them harming the other, and him telling Omega to stay away from them because their squad is nothing but trouble.
Side note 2: Omega tells Crosshair that she knows what he’s going to do before he’s taken away. Then when they are all gearing up in the hanger and about to go look for Crosshair, she hears footsteps coming and tells them they won’t have to look far. She knows that not only are they about to be found by troopers in general, but that Crosshair specifically will be with them. I wonder if as Nala Se’s assistant she knew what the procedure would be to try and enhance Crosshair’s chip and turn him against them.

Haunting Failures
By KyberCrystals
Read here on Ao3!
Whumptober 2023|Day 23|Alternative Prompt: Aftermath of Failure
Rating: T
Words: 745
Summary: Hunter has a nightmare.
CW: Some disturbing images…nothing too graphic, but I just thought I’d mention it.
Hunter is running, boots pounding into packed, dry earth. Ashes drift like snowflakes against a blood red sky, the sun blotted by dense smoke. Hunter is alone, weaving through a battlefield devoid of life, but reeking of death. Bodies, machine and flesh, litter the expanse of land. Hunter tries to ignore them, tries to focus on the one sound that matters, the one thing that matters.
The one person that matters.
“Hunter! Help me!” Crosshair’s voice. Frantic, desperate. “Please!”
Hunter runs harder. He scales another obstacle, nearly loses his footing.
“I’m falling! Hunter!”
“I’m coming!” Hunter calls out, “Hold on, Cross. Just hold on!”
He sees his brother, panicked movements, hands clawing at the ground, searching for a hold on the barren terrain. The sniper is being dragged over the edge of a ravine; his body tangled in the wires of something pulling him over.
“Crosshair!” Hunter dives for him, catching his wrist just as his brother falls. “I’ve got you.”
“You’re going to let me go,” Crosshair gasps.
Hunter shakes his head. “No, I won’t, vod. Just hold on, I’m going to cut the wires away and pull you up.” Hunter reaches for his blade.
Crosshair stares up at him, eyes wide. “You gave up on me. You didn’t even try.”
“I’m trying right now, Cross, just hold on.”
“It’s too late, Hunter. You let me go.”
“That’s not true,” Hunter grits out, the blade of his knife finding the thin edges of the wires wrapped around Crosshair’s armored body. “Just hold on.”
“I thought we don’t leave our own behind,” Crosshair says, but his voice has changed. His expression has changed. He looks enraged, a fiery glint to his eyes. “I trusted you!”
And suddenly, Crosshair falls.
Hunter blinks, horror clouding his mind. “Crosshair!” he screams into the abyss.
“You let him go.”
Hunter turns and Tech is standing there, holding Crosshair’s helmet. The helmet has a crack near the right temple. Hunter scrambles shakily to his feet. “No. No, I didn’t. I tried…”
“Not hard enough, obviously,” Tech tells him. “Because now he’s gone.”
Tech drops the helmet, and it rolls toward Hunter, stopping at his feet. He stares at it, at the crack, at the familiar visor. He looks back up at Tech. Tech’s goggles are shattered on his face, his armor broken. He is barely standing, swaying.
“I couldn’t save him, Hunter,” Tech says. A thin trickle of blood escapes the corner of Tech’s mouth, and his eyes roll back. He starts to fall backwards.
“No!” Hunter lunges forward, catching Tech’s forearm.
But Tech is gone, and Omega is struggling in his grip, trying to pull away from him. “Let me go! We have to save them!” she shrieks.
“Omega!” Hunter cries, “Listen to me, it’s too late. They’re gone.”
“They’re not gone! You are giving up on them! You’re going to leave them behind!”
Hunter pulls her close to him, kneeling to look her in the eye. “Omega, please…”
“You failed them! You failed all of us!”
“Omega…”
“No! Let me go!” Omega thrashes against him, fists pounding against his chest. “You failed us! You failed us!”
“No, please,” Hunter begs.
Omega snarls. “You never cared about Crosshair. That’s why you left him, isn’t it? You let Tech fall. You let Hemlock take me.”
“No, no, no…” Hunter shakes his head, closing his eyes so he doesn’t see the fury in his sister’s face.
“Hunter!”
Hunter wakes with a panicked sob, sitting upright so fast his head collides with the bunk above him; however, the pain of the impact feels like nothing compared to the turmoil of emotions making his heart pound and eyes sting with unshed tears.
“Easy, easy,” Echo’s voice soothes. “You were having a nightmare.”
Hunter turns to look at the clone sitting beside him. “It felt real…” he pants out, his breaths shuddering in his lungs. “I lost them all, Echo…it’s all my fault. If I hadn’t let Crosshair go…”
“No, you can’t think like that,” Echo says firmly. He takes Hunter’s hand, squeezing it so tight it hurts.
“And Tech,” Hunter continues, “he wouldn’t have died if we had gotten to Crosshair sooner…we should have made him come with us at Kamino. We should never have left him behind.”
Echo shakes his head. “Hunter…”
“And Omega…I promised to protect her.” Hunter begins to cry, the voices of his nightmare whispering in his memories. He failed them. He failed all of them.
