The Penthouse Headcanons

Hey!! This is my first post I’ve ever done. I never thought I would actually make one here but here I am😭 anyway I’m making this because I really love this k-drama but I don’t see a lot of stuff about it in here so I’m doing some headcanons….because I can

- Most of the Hera palace kids don’t know how to cook except Rona, Jenny & Eunbyeol

I just get that vibe from them. Minhyuk and his dad rely on their mom for cooking and cleaning. The twins have their own maid who does that. Seokhoon might know basic stuff but not enough. I definitely think Jenny cooks with her mom sometimes. Ha Eunbyeol learned to try and impress Seokhoon. Rona definitely helps her mom around the kitchen

- Seokkyung can’t sleep when there’s thunder and lighting at nighttime.

This ain’t exactly a headcanon, Seokhoon confirmed that in season 1? I believe. I remember he said that to his father. I just felt like this needed to be brought to light

- Shin Suryeon’s love language is definitely quality time. You can’t tell me otherwise

- Seokkyung and Seokhoon definitely find comfort and security in each other.

I feel they both suffer from nightmares due to multiple reasons so I can imagine one of them waking up to the other texting or calling in the middle of the night about how they can’t sleep, and the other person shows up at their room a few minutes later and they just end up talking or cuddling to sleep

- Mari definitely saw Rona as her own daughter when Yoon Hee died.

She took her in and even left her husband because he didn’t want to have anything to do with Rona. That’s some motherly love right there.

- Shim Suryeon took many self defense and fighting classes

Have you SEEN the way this girl handles Joo Dantae sometimes😭the lord knows getting into a fight with her will leave on the ground with a broken nose.

- Ha Yoon Chul takes Eunbyeol to go eat out secretly behind Seojins back

Seojin only has her daughter eat certain and extremely healthy foods that are “fit for singer”. Yoon Chul just wants to make sure his daughter can enjoy all types of food and take her out so she doesn’t stay cooped up inside the penthouse.

- Kang Mari definitely likes women👌🏾

I rest my case….

- Jenny had a crush on Rona at one point, but it eventually went away

- Yoon Hee and Rona have karaoke nights

- Min Hyuk had a biiiiiigggg crush on Seokhoon

That was actually revealed by min Hyuks actor that it was originally written for min hyuk to be in love with seokhoon

ask me ask me ask me baby (Disclaimer: I started writing this, then had dinner, watched an episode of Bros on Foot, then had a shower and now I'm pretty exhausted (thanks rona + bad health). So my answers may seem a lil disorganised... they most likely are) Oh, gosh. I don't think I have that many opinions that are actually controversial when discussing be. But I shall still give it a go. I going to put a break here 'cause I really didn't know when to shut up. Also, sorry Iva but I feel like my answers are things we've already spoken about. So, I don't think any of this is new information to you 😩 TL;DR: Dong Sik and Joo Won shouldn't be represented by one aspect of their character. They're more complicated than that. (Including a mundane opinion at the end) (please excuse any weird funny business in this post (writing, grammar, spelling, clarity), we're trying our best here at Lamps HQ)

i. We as a fandom baby Dong Sik too much. I love Dong Sik. I adore him. He has seen and experienced far too many traumas, and I want nothing but good things for him in his future. What happened to him and his family when he was 20 was a tragedy that could have been avoided if the system (which should be in place to aid victims) wasn't systemically corrupt. He was beaten by police officers whilst in custody. He was framed and belittled, degraded, and humiliated. (the trauma he experienced is so layered and would take a lifetime for him to unpack and get closure from).

It almost completely ruined his life and future prospects, and it would have been done if Nam Sang Bae hadn't come in with his lvl 100 guilt and tried to make up for his actions. Dong Sik tried to make the best out of the awful circumstances that befell him and I sincerely admire him. Not everyone is as kind and loving as Dong Sik.... But but but... Buuuuut that doesn't absolve him of his actions. He murdered someone with his bare hands and allowed the system that was once put against him to be used in his favour.

Police officers shouldn't be murdering civilians. full stop. Yes, he was emotionally compromised- technically it could be seen as self-defence, but an unconvicted man, a suspect, was murdered and Dong Sik didn't face repercussions. Nam Sang Bae skewed the evidence so Dong Sik didn't get into trouble. Dong Sik took a year (?) off work after that event and to "help" him recover, Sang Bae got Dong Sik transferred to his substation (which Sang Bae had been demoted to as a result of one of his rookies dying on the job. Although, it wasn't deemed much of a punishment considering he was so close to retiring anyway). All the while, Dong Sik feels justified for his actions (as he did when he moved Min Jeong's fingers). I think it's best that when discussing and exploring Dong Sik's character, we remember that he is a man capable of murder. He is a murderer. (Do I blame him for what he did? No, not really. I can see why he did it. Objectively, I fucking love it for the narrative lol). But yeah, he isn't a guiltless sweet baby angel who never did anything wrong in his life. (DISCLAIMER: obviously jokes are just jokes. I love them and I never want them to stop. I am super guilty of participating in this line of joking and I'm not about to stop any time soon. But when discussing DS in serious conversations, we shouldn't erase his history. By doing that, we are devoiding him of agency and retribution (which is one of the main arcs/themes of his character development)).

ii. Joo Won is autistic and people need to stop calling him stupid. I will die on this hill, I don't care. I fully encourage everyone to bully Joo Won, because, well, he fucking deserves it. I know that bullying him is a hilarious love language the fandom has developed and I fully participate in this pastime. I honestly love it. Yes, he has done a lot wrong and shouldn't be absolved of his sins (that being said, we should allow him the space to learn and grow. We should learn to forgive whilst still keeping him and ourselves in check). But where I draw the line is when people outright laugh at his characteristics/actions which are derived from the fact that Joo Won is coded as autistic.

I know not everyone is going to be particularly versed in neurodivergent symptoms and that is completely fine. I even didn't fully clock Joo Won being autistic the first time I watched the show- I "labelled" his actions as a result of one) his obscenely privileged upbringing and two) the fact that he (imo) has some degree of OCD (which is a type of anxiety disorder). Then it hit me one day that he is soooo autistic. A few examples (I'm too ill to list each one or go into full detail): 1- People say that he's a bad detective. Which, ugh. 2- That he should have seen the "obvious" signs that Dong Sik wasn't the killer earlier. This sentiment completely ignores the timeline of the show and the fact that the viewer is provided information that Joo Won doesn't have access to. And it also removes Dong Sik's accountability for being purposely obtuse and antagonistic. 3- the whole (very minor) narrative that joo won is lame because he has terrible people skills (or something along those lines, I can't quite remember the tags I read as it was a while ago). This one, in particular, ties in with Joo Won's autism coding. With a (relatively sound) understanding of what autism looks like in male adults, to me, it would seem that a lot of what Joo Won does (speaking bluntly, getting easily confused when provided a lot of information during an intense situation, overwhelm, struggling to gauge people's emotions/tone, being very black and white, hyper focussing on a topic of interest, struggling to adapt to new social environments, masking, issues with food and sensory stimulation, etc) can be credited to autism. Perhaps I'm connecting dots that don't exist and am projecting an ideal onto his character, but as someone who grew up with multiple friends and family members who are neurodiverse (and is neurodiverse myself), I can see so many similarities between Joo Won's actions, thought processes, and mannerisms to that of a person with autism.

^ (credit) here is an overview of some characteristics of autism in adults (obviously, it's a complex topic which differs from person to person. But I can definitely connect many of these examples to joo won's character and actions). [I feel like I could say a lot more about this subject, but it would be distracting away from the original point. I have thoughts on Joo Won masking and how he struggles to mask around Dong Sik]

How does this relate to Joo Won being "stupid"? One may ask. I will try to explain it as best I can (even though I don't fully have my answer planned out). Labelling Joo Won as stupid, as a stuck-up nepo baby who did nothing for the storyline, or just a useless dolt that needed Dong Sik to spoon-feed him, completely misconstrues the source material. Joo Won is intelligent, hard-working, determined, stubborn, foolish, annoying, pompous, proud, narrow-minded, snobby, short-sighted, dedicated, loyal, loving, persistent, and perceptible to change (and even more than that). We wouldn't have a story if Joo Won was stupid. We wouldn't have a conclusion if Joo Won was stupid. Downplaying Joo Won's intelligence and chalking up his characteristics as something that makes him less-than does a complete disservice to his character as well as his importance within the story. Beyond Evil is a story with TWO leads. It's not the Dong Sik show. I can NEVER subscribe to the act of bringing one character down in order to hold another up. Dong Sik is not this all-seeing, all-knowing, flawless character. If he was, he would have never been framed for murder, he wouldn't have been stuck for 20 years, and he wouldn't have needed help in uncovering the truth. He needed Joo Won (and Ji Hwa, Jae Yi, Jung Je, Ji Hoon, Du Soo, Sang Bae, etc). Without Joo Won, he may have never found out the full truth of what happened to his sister (as how many people in his life had a part to play in the traumas he faced). So, I think it's about time that people start to recognise Joo Won as a neurodivergent character (and stop giving him a hard time for not seeing signs that WE were given), as well as stop downplaying him. Kim Soo Jin, Sim Na Yeon, and Yeo Jin Goo created such a multi-dimensional, complex, flawed character with good and bad qualities, it does a disservice to their creativity and hard work when one belittles Joo Won down to one descriptor. Dong Sik and Joo Won aren't just the idiot and the downtrodden. They're more than that and fan interpretation shouldn't rewrite the facts of the show.

Anyway... there's a point in there somewhere... I think... I have no idea if I managed to construct a reply that makes sense. I don't think I fully relayed all my thoughts on this particular matter, but we live. tbh, I feel very icky when an autistic character gets labelled as stupid or useless. It gets on my nerves and if it wasn't obvious, I am pretty protective of Joo Won (maybe I shouldn't be, but... well... here we are!). Also, as a note: I don't expect anyone to agree with my opinion that Joo Won is autistic. But yeah, I was going to include more "controversial" opinions for be, but I have already said way too much. This post reads like a rant - which it probably is - and I don't want it to ruffle anyone's feathers. It's not an attack, it's just my opinion.

As for the mundane opinion: iii. kiwis are the scum of the fruit world. They're nasty and a lot of effort to eat (considering they don't taste great), and their texture is gross. But I do think their furry shell is pretty neat, even if it makes my skin cruel. (idk why this was the first thing that came to mind lol)

why did your muse become an idol?

eunah became an idol by way of the right timing, through getting caught up in a domino effect series of events -- her dream was to be an actress. going onto candy shop at the last minute was sold to her as a promotional opportunity for her future acting career. she never expected to actually make the group. after all, less than half of the candy shop line up were going to make it in the end. coming in fourth was a major surprise to her. why did she go along with it? well, her contract said she had to, and also, again, to continue to promote herself adjacently to her acting career.

what does your muse think of their company and their group?

eunah doesn’t exactly... love bc entertainment. that being said, she can’t say she hates being under them either. she thinks they’re a little shady, but she can’t overlook their power and sway in the industry. her role in moon embracing the sun was a definite fluke, and if she didn’t sign under bc, she thinks she’d probably only be acting in mid-level webdramas still today. thanks to the company, she’s been able to get her foot in the door of some much more impressive audition rooms. having grown up competing in elite gymnastics, the pressure that comes with a big name like bc is all too unfortunately familiar to her. that’s something she definitely does not like, but that she begrudgingly accepted a long time ago as part and parcel of her life experience.

eunah, surprising nobody more than herself, does enjoy being a member of candy. she likes her members, she likes their sweet image, she’s even grown to like performing their songs. and yeah, she likes their songs. she likes their concepts. she thinks she suits all of them well enough without too much effort on her part, which is a definite relief.

is your muse on their first contract or their second? if they’ve renewed, what were their feelings around that at the time and what were their hopes for their second contract? if they haven’t renewed, what are their current thoughts on the end of their eventual first contract?

eunah is on her first contract. her thoughts on renewing are definitely split. part of her is hoping that, come 2025, she’ll be able to finagle her way out of candy altogether, to pursue acting fulltime. stuff like special stages and bc family concert events, and all that kind of stuff are things she’d definitely still do, and she’d wear her “former member” title proudly, but as useful as candy is for her face, their sheer amount of schedules also severely limits the amount of acting projects she can take on.

what are your muse’s goals, ambitions, and motivations?

obviously, to act more. to improve as an actor, too. she’d like to experiment with stage plays in the future. but most of all, headlining the sub-divisions of her goals beneath the general light up sign ahead of her that reads a-c-t is tv drama lead role. she has upcoming obligations for penthouse, where she’ll continue as a recurring supporting character in the role of bae rona, but what she really wants is to take on a proper lead role.

other career related goals include improving her singing, looking into more charity work, and playing around with submitting some lyrics to bc -- in that order. she really has come to love singing (but note, she’s not in love with it, they’re very different, thank you), and since she gets a decent amount of lines for a vocalist, she’d like to play her part in waving away candy’s “can’t sing” criticism. she’s also a big, big fan of how you can act when you’re on stage performing too -- it’s helped her, actually, improve her acting and camera presence in the long run, so she feels a need to invest back into her idol career, for as long as she’s still obliged to continue with it. her pursuit of perfectionism really is endless.

what moments or people in your muse’s life are or have been the most impactful and/or the most important to them?

let’s go with the most impactful people in eunah’s life:

one. bibi kim -- eunah’s second eldest sister. her eldest sister doesn’t get much of a look in. she’s a lot older, and a lot more distant, but bibi, at four years older than eunah, was very doting on her new baby sister for the first few years of eunah’s life. she’s a baker these days! eunah was her taste-tester when she was a kid. there’s even a donut at bibi’s bakery (and yeah, that’s just what it’s called too. other name candidates included pastissibibi and biboulangerie.) that’s called ‘eunah’ -- it’s topped with white chocolate and peanut shards. eunah’s only tried it once, but it’s based off her favourite cookies that bibi would make when they were younger. ngl, she prefers the cookie. they’re not as close these days, mostly because even over facetime, she can tell that eunah’s been more troubled, more inside herself, and eunah’s not really interested in hearing her nagging advice, no matter how right it is.

two. grace sungah lim -- eunah’s mother. she and her father separated in the year 2001, before eunah’s second birthday. she was the baby who was supposed to fix their marriage, and her mother will never let her forget it. since eunah couldn’t do that, every other expectation of her mother’s got piled onto her too, so she could karmically repent, or something. age 4, grace got eunah started in gymnastics. she chaneled all of her energy, everything, into eunah’s gym career. eunah, for her part, hated it, and the standards she was forced to adhere to from an early age, but she appreciates it these days for the discipline and flexibility (like, literal physical flexability) it instilled in her. still, her and her mother aren’t very close. they always had a semi-professional relationship, but even that’s dissolved somewhat in the years since candy’s debut. eunah has a real manager now. she has no need for a super intense stage momager anymore. they text from time to time, but that’s about it. it’s weird, these days, for them to be so... separate. it’s an uncomfortable feeling for eunah, even if she did foster the lesser contact between them.

three. jiwoon kim -- eunah’s father. after her parents split, jiwoon went home to seoul to take care of his aging parents and take up a job offer that he’d repeatedly turned down in favour of staying in seattle to try and repair his marriage. his eldest daughters were thoroughly turned against him, but eunah, being so young and getting so annoyed with her mother’s gym obsession, was willing to give her dad a chance. it was thanks to his encouragement and support that she was able to go to auditions and land her first part in moon embracing the sun. he’s the member of her family that she’s closest with these days, since for all his support, he’s also the worst at talking about any ~real feelings~ or issues. bringing that sort of stuff up is near impossible for him. so... he just doesn’t bring anything up. and eunah really appreciates that.

what are five of your muse’s favorite things? feel free to expand on why this is and/or how these became their favorite things.

we’re going for movies. her acting inspirations!! her favourite five films!

one. stick it (2006) -- a mid 00s american movie about gymnastics. eunah’s ... fourth or so love in life is gymnastics, even if at the time ... well, yeah. she does love it. anyways! stick it was her favourite movie growing up. they got the real commentators and everything in for realism... AND!!! everyone purposefully scratching??? hello! eunah’s dream!! she wished so bad she was that brave, or had something that she cared about enough to justify scratching like that. now, as an adult, and an actress herself ... please!! let her star in a remake of stick it.

two. flying (1986) -- another gymnastics movie & one of keanu reeves’ first ever roles ... this movie is a MESS. it’s so cheesy. it’s a total guilty pleasure. there’s a fucking gymnastics-off in the middle of a drive-in movie theatre. it’s exceptional. every second scene is a montage with a disgustingly bad original song. still, she loves it. it’s super stupid, but if she could star in something so hilariously bad ... become part of someone else’s comfort guilty pleasure movie ... and do flips down a red carpet ... yeah. yeah. that would be so cool.

three. suspiria (2018) -- no hate to dario argento’s og 1977 film, but she’s definitely more of a fan of the 2018 reimagining. the soundtrack by thom yorke? godly. (and no, that’s not just her inner radiohead femcel talking.) the dance routines? insanity. the effects? next level. it’s the type of movie that for eunah, cemented her decision to pursue acting. it’s the type of production she’d love to actually be apart of one day. eunah just really loves horror. and tilda swinton. and tilda swinton in a horror about dancing? perfection.

four. marie antoinette (2006) -- eunah’s a big sofia coppola enthusiast. she loves the dreamy, film aesthetic of her movies. the pretty, blush pink maximalist feeling that spans most of them is the same concept that eunah tries to capture in her own outfits and décor. she really admires kirsten dunst’s career also, since she’s someone who eunah was able to see since she was very young. in jumanji and small soldiers, then in spider-man, bring it on, marie antoinette, then in melancholia and bachelorette ... her career longevity is so admirable. marie antoinette just so happens to be her number one favourite.

five. battle royale (2000) -- could be interchangeable with spot #1 on this list. a very questionable comfort movie of eunah’s. but it’s comforting to her, okay? she likes gore. whatever. another very primary example of the type of movie she’d really love to be in. for the time being, thanks to candy, she can see herself realistically hoping to play a character more like takako chigusa, but she’d love to take on something properly twisted, like mitsuko souma.

what is one conflict, internal or external, that your muse is currently dealing with, has recently dealt with, or will need to deal with in the future?

eunah’s insecurity rules her life. her coping mechanism, for all this time, has been to lean into the toxic culture that was part of gymnastics -- the toxic diet culture, the impossible body standards -- to use that to take control of a life where she felt like she had no control. when her life was upended, when gymnastics turned to training, turned to candy shop, it was a highly transferrable coping mechanism. in the upcoming months, she’s going to have to face her family -- her sisters, her mother, even her father, who typically doesn’t say a word about anything -- and confront her dependency on restriction and over-exercise. she’s a tired, tired person by now: this has been her life since she was 4, 5, 6, however old she was when she first became aware of it. since then, whenever that was. the path to healing will be long, but she’ll walk it gently, one step at a time. eunah’s journey to recovery is something that’s really important to me, out of character, as a long term battler with eating disorders, and i always aim to write her as respectfully and as well informed as i can. in her first ever iteration, before the revamp, i’d written and developed her to a point where she was actively engaging in therapy and working towards recovery, and i really want to write her back to that point again. to be honest, i didn’t feel like that was actually going to be possible in her position in andromeda in the initial revamp, since there was much less conflict with her whole ... self there -- in candy, though she likes their songs and concepts well enough, there’s something not quite there about it. there’s more current, external conflict to go alongside her internal conflict, which i think will make it easier for her to address them both in tandem.

if your muse has established career claims, what are their thoughts on their career so far? if they do not, how do they feel about not having individual activities yet? what would they like to do in the future, if anything? if they don’t have ambitions for individual activities, explain why.

eunah is very proud of everything in her established career claims. young heo yunwoo/wol changed her life. and from there, it’s just kept on getting better. admittedly nightmare teacher was a little bit of a dip -- she loved it, but the reception wasn’t on the same level of her only prior experience -- but parasite was a complete triumph. it’s the type of film she’s always wanted to be in -- social commentary horror, beautiful cinematography, an outstanding score. she’s very proud of the entire production, even if the part she played in it was relatively small. then there’s penthouse ... okay, yeah, it’s a 100 on the melodramatic scale, but that’s kind of why she loves it. she’s very excited to see where season two goes, once they start filming. lastly, then there’s her oh boy! cover ... she likes it well enough, but she definitely think it’s very indicative of the new, advertising era of eunah that bc are starting to usher in. she doesn’t mind it much. she realises it’s part of her job, and she’s happy to do more of it going forward. primarily though, acting is her focus. no questions asked.
