ficlet for buggachat's bakery enemies au!
when tom dupain chose to become a baker, he knew he was trading some opportunities for others. he knew he would never operate on anybody to save their lives, or stand in a courtroom and defend a client who had placed their fate in his hands. he knew that he’d never act in front of a camera, or drive a car on a racetrack and get paid for it. he did not, however, know that becoming a baker would come with it’s very own close up drama show.
before the dupain-cheng bakery gained its newest employee, adrien, tom did not have a very dramatic life. the most exciting thing that would happen would be when sabine over-proofed the brioche or tom curdled the eggs, or maybe when a new episode of his tv show came out on disney plus.
and then, suddenly, he was awkwardly standing off to the side as his daughter glared at the agreste boy, suddenly he was watching as his two employees commentate their day’s to their jewelry, suddenly he was trawling through his search history on the family computer to get to that amazing recipe he found last week but couldn’t quite remember the name of, and having to wade through dozens of tabs on peacocks to find it.
tom dupain was tired. he was done with his daughter cackling in the vague direction of adrien, he was finished with the boy’s mutterings about cheese, and do not even get him started on marinette’s newfound fascination with gossip magazine’s theorizing where the heroes of paris had gone, and who now held the miraculouses. he was paying a fifteen dollar a month subscription for something called miraculous musings! (╯✧▽✧)╯ for gods sake.
he was going to put an end to this. preferably as soon as possible.
tom put his plan into effect after the bakery had closed for the day, poking his head into the kitchen where adrien was frosting a cupcake while marinette eyed him suspiciously. he sighed. “hey, guys, can i talk to you?” he asked, rubbing his hands together nervously.
“yeah, of course!” adrien smiled at once, and marinette gave a curt nod, not taking her vision off of the young agreste as if he would try to strangle someone with the piping bag he was clutching in his hands.
“er, let’s take this to the living room.” tom said, bowing out of the room and leaving them to dust off their aprons and finish up their baking projects. a few minutes later, adrien padded into the room, settling on the couch and fidgeting with his fingers. marientte came slinking in shortly after, looking highly on guard and plopped down as far as she could from adrien on the other side of the couch.
my daughter is not very subtle. tom thought, creasing his eyebrows. he loved her to death, but there were moments when he wished she was still tiny and didn’t think she was sherlock holmes looking into a case that didn’t exist.
"first, i want to adress something." tom folded his hands in his lap like he had seen doctors in movies do, praying it would make him look more professional. "there's nothing wrong with having imaginary friends, just, this late in life it's a little--"
"dad!" marientte exclaimed, blushing. "none of us have imaginary friends here."
"mhm." he nodded, noticing how adrien hadn't said anything. "then who are tikki and plagg? don't think i don't notice you talking to them where there's only thin air--"
both of them balked, and adrien sputtered. "i have no idea what your talking about!" he squawked frantically, and tom just nodded thoughtfully. they were in denial. was that a good thing, or-?
"okay, moving on: marinette, i noticed how much you are obsessed with peacocks, and loving animals is perfectly okay! just, spending three hours looking at them on the internet seems a bit much, sweetie."
"ooh, i love peacocks." adrien chimed in, and marinette whirled on him.
"really?" she demanded, face set as if he had just confirmed something outlandish. "i knew it."
"marinette, honey,-" he began, but marientte cut him off by leaping from her chair.
"i bet you were in league with hawkmoth this whole time, huh!" she shrieked, and tom buried his face in his hands.
he should have been a doctor. he bet they didn't have to deal with stuff like this.
