"Sana studied Hokushin Ittō ryū at a young age along with her siblings. She had a great interest in bujutsu as she learned many things, such as kenjutsu. It is recorded that Sana was exceptionally skilled in using the kodachi (short sword), that she received menkyo kaiden (mastery level) in kodachijutsu at the age of fourteen. Her older sister taught her naginatajutsu, which was quite renowned due to Sadakichi’s efforts in developing it.
When Sana was 19, she went to Uwajima Domain as a kenjutsu instructor for the Date family to train their daughter named Masako (政子姫). During her time there, she had a sparring match with the soon-to-be 9th domain head, Date Mune’e (age 27), and was able to win against him. "

Louis XIV was a Genroku-era monarch of France.
William Shakespeare was an Azuchi-Momoyama era poet.
Cowboys were itinerant riders of the Meiji era US.
The American Civil War happened in the Bakumatsu era.
My PhD is in history and this sort of realization never ceases to amaze me.

I think I finally realized where the Kiwami Ishin cover comes from

I was watching the 90's action romp with Antonio Banderas and I realized the poster looked VERY familiar. Feel free to correct me if the inspiration came from somewhere else though. Nevertheless, image goes very hard.

Hijikata and Chizuru's relationship is really interesting in my opinion (not necessarily in a romantic sense), and I want to write something about it, but it occurred to me that her becoming his kosho is pure plot convenience and actually is very stupid.
Why would Kondo do this? Hijikata is famously foul-tempered, does not know how to deal with teenagers, and has a massive inferiority complex related to his "fake" samurai status (and giving him an obviously fake kosho would not help for sure). I don't think Hakuoki mentions anything about Hijikata being a womanizer and seeing meikos and particular, so that is not necessary cannon, but this aspect is also difficult to ignore completely. And he also suggested to kill her a whole bunch of times. So...
Even that aside, it is absolutely unclear WHY the vice-commander would need a kosho when the commander does not have one.
If one is to choose between Kondo, Sannan (living one), and Hijikata, the latter would be the least suitable person to be essentially in charge of a teenage girl. One can make the argument that Sannan was always dangerous, but it is entirely unclear and Kondo wouldn't know this anyway.
But that's Hakuoki writing for you!

Rurouni Kenshin (Ep 9)
It's interesting that Megumi Takani's backstory is similar to the real historical figure, Yae Niijima, who lost her family during the Siege of Aizu and became a doctor later to ease the sufferings of others too.
