besides diversity, the other huge thing the ballet world needs to normalize is safety first.
the ballet school i’m currently at for the summer had a broken AC system yesterday, meaning that every studio was between 80 and 90 degrees. instead of immediately cancelling classes in the morning, they waited until 2:30 PM when several people had fainted from heat exposure to send everyone home. this included a young girl with POTS, which probably says something even worse about how chronically ill people are affected by the “just push through it” mentality.
do better, @ ballet schools. do fucking better.

I’m wondering if and in what case you can repeat the year in VBA. Anastasia Gureeva, who is starting 8/III this autumn, was in the same class as sofya khoreva as of 2019. Seems like she is originally a year senior to her current classmates.
Its definitely possible for students to repeat a year, although it’s not the desired solution for anyone. I don’t know her personal situation, but usually it happens when the student has:
Extensive injury (missed too many classes, not enough time to recover and regain form)
Extensive illness (missed too many classes, not healthy for them to be extensively dancing, loses strength)
Family/personal issues (anything taking them away from the school for extended periods of time)
Failed academic exams (some schools won’t let a dancer advance a ‘class’ if their academic work is too poor, especially when passing from middle school to high school and graduation from high school)
Failed dance exams (again, depends on the school. Some are more generous and will let a student repeat the year, often in the middle years where they think a student has potential but perhaps not enough strength or coordination to progress)

ARTISTS WE LOVE: George Balanchine
ARTISTS WE LOVE: George Balanchine #fromtheblog
Ballet. Balanchine. The names are practically synonymous. In fact, it’s hard to imagine the former, in the U.S especially, without the prolific efforts of the latter. It’s also nearly impossible to overstate the importance of Lincoln Kirstein, a wealthy New Englander with a love of the arts. Kirstein provided the framework in which George Balanchine was free to create the innovations for which…

How Ballet Institutes Help Kids Find Their Artistic Voice
Tumblr media
Ballet Institutes are essential for helping children express their artistic talents. These places are like centers where young dancers learn all about ballet techniques and traditions. At a Ballet Institute, kids have the support and tools they need to discover and grow their creativity. They attend special classes, workshops, and shows where they can move and interpret freely, forming a strong bond with ballet.
Aside from learning the technical side, a Ballet School also helps kids develop their artistic side. They don't just focus on getting the steps right; they also teach students to express themselves through dance, using their feelings and creativity. By trying out different styles and practicing different routines, young dancers learn to tell stories and convey emotions through their performances. This way of teaching ballet doesn't just improve their skills; it also helps them understand and enjoy the rich variety and depth of the art form.
These institutes serve as communities where children can collaborate, learn, and grow together. In this supportive environment, students are encouraged to explore their unique artistic voices while receiving guidance and feedback from experienced instructors and peers. Through collaboration in rehearsals, performances, and creative projects, children develop confidence, teamwork skills, and a sense of belonging, enriching their artistic journey in ballet and beyond.
