word bank: toruk makto — rider of last shadow, tawtute — human; sky person, & tulkun — whale like creature residing in awa’atlu
note: was originally titled “my baby bro” but then i came up with this plot & trashed my original idea bc i felt like i could write this better & actually have motivation to write this :).
Lo’ak is known for getting in trouble. Either his loud mouth or actions, mostly both, got him into scuffles with his parents. This time was no different.
He had bonded with Payakan, a tulkun who was outcasted for something that any other being would do when forced to see their Mother be killed in front of them. In Lo’ak’s eyes, Payakan’s actions were driven by his sadness and were justifiable to a point. He knew how much the creature regretted the lives lost that day. If the same thing were to happen to him, Lo’ak would react the same way.
He felt understood by Payakan. They both had a significant physical difference from the rest of their species, making them feel isolated and alone in the large planet of Pandora. Made them feel judged and ridiculed for being different from the rest.
Not even thirty minutes prior, Lo’ak got chewed out by his Father, scolding him for talking back to the Olo’eyktan and doing something he, yet again, shouldn’t be doing. His Father never failed to make him feel like the black sheep of the family even though they are more alike than he’d hoped. It sucked. It really did. He just wanted people to see him. See all of him, even the messed up and alien parts of him.
One person only came to mind when he thought about people seeing and accepting him for who he is. You.
You were the eldest daughter of the Sully family. The token child. The perfect image of what a Na’vi should look like. The one that carried the burden of being Tsahìk or Olo’eykte one day. The one who, despite all the push back, saw Lo’ak for who he is.
You absolutely adored Lo’ak when you were younger, only being around the age of four when he was born. You refused to let your parents pry him away from your tiny arms when you held him way longer than you should’ve. You loved holding him and talking to him in the baby voice your Father always did to you and your other siblings, gently running a small finger down the flat bridge of his nose. You loved singing him to sleep or rocking him whenever he began to fuss, dropping everything to come and comfort your baby brother. And even though he is all grown up and is ‘too cool’ for your affections, you still give it to him anyway.
Not like the teen boy would ever admit it, but he loves whenever you’d rub his back when he didn’t feel good, rebraid his hair when it outgrew the current braids, hug him a little too long after a scouting mission, and especially when you’d pat the empty side of your mat for him to lay down on, comforting him with your warm embrace as he dozed off into a peaceful slumber. When he was younger, he was much more greedy with your attention and affections, pouting to you whenever you gave Neteyam or Kiri an extra kiss goodnight or fussing when you didn’t say your usual goodbye before heading off to train for the day. Lo’ak was practically attached to your hip throughout his adolescence years, clinging to your leg wherever you went. There was always a different connection you and Lo’ak had compared to your other siblings. It was something special and was hard to explain. You just understood one another, no matter how either of you looked or what you went through.
“What’s wrong, baby bro?” Your voice asked, concern laced in your voice.
Of course you knew what was wrong. You practically heard the whole thing from the other side of the island. It didn’t take long for Tuk to inform you of what happened when you arrived home either, sadness written on her face as she told you the story and how they haven’t seen Lo’ak since then.
You found him minutes after your interaction with Tuktirey. He was sitting on the beach, staring off into the horizon as the waves lazily lapped at his feet, legs brought up to his chest as his chin rested on his scarred knees.
“Nothing,” Lo’ak mumbled, eyes stuck on the eclipsing sun. He refused to look weak in front of others, not wanting to ruin his image as Toruk Makto’s second son, especially if it was someone he looked up to.
You hummed in response, not believing his statement. Lo’ak was unbelievably stubborn, something he got from your Mother. It was a good trait to have at times, but it made it harder to break down the boys walls when they needed breaking. Too stubborn for his own good, you thought, settling yourself next to your brother.
“Sure, and the sky is green,” you replied, smirking at your stupid joke. But Lo’ak only rolled his eyes and huffed your way, bringing his knees closer to his chest.
You always tried to crack a joke or two to make him feel better. It worked at times, usually when he was younger. You hadn’t tried this method in a while, too caught up with running away from your home clan and trying to fit into the Metkayina’s way of life. You hadn’t been able to comfort Lo’ak the past times he got scolded by your Father. Something that you felt sorry for and regretted. You were the eldest Sully child. You felt the need to comfort all of your siblings whenever they needed it. You felt awful for not being there for your youngest brother when he desperately needed it.
“I think what you did back there was stupid,” you started, your words causing Lo’ak’s ears to pin themselves to the sides of his head, “Talking back to the Olo’eyktan was really stupid. Especially in front of the Tsahìk. I mean, she scares the absolute shit out of me.”.
Your words seemed to have an effect on Lo’ak as you heard a small sniffle come from him, signaling that he was going to cry or already was. Your heart dropped at that fact, urging yourself to finish your thoughts.
“But, I think it was also brave,” you add on, turning your head to face Lo’ak, watching his reactions, “I don’t think I could ever do what you did. I’d probably shit my pants before speaking to Tonowari like that. You truly have bigger balls than me, little brother. I also think that it was sick that you bonded with a tulkun. I mean, that’s gotta be like, a record or something! First Omatikaya to ever bond with a tulkun.”.
And before Lo’ak could even utter a word, you wrapped up your thoughts with a final, “Has a nice ring to it: Lo’ak, the Tulkun Rider.”.
Fat tears run down the expanse of Lo’ak’s cheeks, rolling down the skin and onto his neck and chest. He felt so frustrated with his parents and how no one was listening to him about Payakan. How no one cared about what he saw or what he felt when he bonded with the creature. He saw what he saw and felt what he felt. He knew out of any of them the truth about what happened and how much regret Payakan carried around. It wasn’t fair. None of it was.
You gently placed a hand onto your brothers shaking shoulder, bringing him in closer towards your body so he could lean into you. Your four-fingered hand came to grasp his five-fingered hand, thumb rubbing the back of his hand in comfort.
“I’m really sorry that I wasn’t there for you before to comfort you. I should’ve been there for you when you needed me,” you whisper, the hand on his shoulder moving to his head to play with his grown out braids. I’ll have to convince him to let me rebraid them, you thought to yourself, knowing that it won’t take much for him to agree to your request.
“I’m sorry that Dad yelled at you and made you feel the way that you feel. He’s always so harsh on you. It’s not fair,” you added, soothing down his hair as his cries quieted down and softened. “He treats us like soldiers instead of children. He seems to be stuck in his tawtute ways recently,” you continued, shaking your head at the realization.
“For what it’s worth, Lo’ak. I believe you,” you said, causing him to pull away from your figure and to stare up at you in shock.
“You do?” He asked, ears perking back up in interest.
You merely nod, smiling down at your brother, “You’ll have to take me to meet Payakan one day, baby bro.”.
Lo’ak brightly grinned at your words, jumping up to hug you. “You’ll love him, sis! I’ve already told him all about you,” he commented, excitement evident in his voice.
“All good things I hope,” you laugh out, embracing Lo’ak.
Lo’ak only hummed and nodded in response, suddenly tired from all of the crying he did. He reached up a fist to rub his eye, ears flickering back as he did so. You knew he was tired. You could see it all over his face.
“Turn around,” you whispered, gesturing for your brother to turn his body around so his back would be facing you. He obeyed your order, sitting crossed legged as his tail wrapped around his waist and slightly curled at the end, anticipating your next move.
Once you put your fingers in his hair and began to slowly unbraid each braid one by one, a smile creeped onto Lo’ak’s face as he relaxed against your swift and gentle fingers. He missed the times where you would willingly rebraid his hair for him and put beads in his hair that matched the ones in yours. It was nice to have you do something that comforted him when he was child again. It was nice to have you comfort him. It was nice to have you as an older sister.
As time passed and the sky got darker, Neytiri had begun to look for her two missing children, stumbling upon them on the shoreline seated next to each other as they whispered and giggled amongst one another. The Mother of five smiled at the sight before her, heart swelling at the interaction. She knew of the kind of connection you shared, knowing that it ran deep and beyond her understanding as a Mother. She knew that no matter what, you’ll always have each other. Yeah, she thought, he’ll be just fine.

Your ears twitched atop your head, swiveling around as the sounds of the forest greeted you. You welcomed the smell of pandora, the feel of the soil beneath your feet a familiar sensation that allowed your body to relax as you trusted each of your senses to guide you to the path of the Olo'eyktan's lost daughter.
As you neared a large Yovo bush, a distressed sniffle reached your ears causing you to pause in your tracks as you lowered your bow. Following the treeline a dark blue tail with black tendrils flickered sadly as the owner of said tail continued to cry.
"Evi'" You called, using the affectionate term Ta'hlu referred to you. At your voice, the sniffling stop, the tail coming to a stiff halt in an almost comedic way. A small blue head peeked at you from beneath the leaves of the tree, looking down at you with wide eyes.
"Y/n?" Tuktirey voiced your name with shock, her glossy eyes surprised at the sight of you. You gave a small smile, as you motioned to where she sat.
"Your father has been worried for you, evi'. We could not find you." You told her, beginning to climb the tree after she allowed you up. At your words, she began to tear up again, no doubt overwhelmed by all that occurred.
"I didn't mean to worry them. I wanted to find some new fruit for sa'nok and couldn't remember the way back. I kept going and climbed this tree, do you think they'll be angry at me?" She asked with a worried frown. You sighed, opening your arm to allow her some comfort as she easily accepted it, her hair beads tickling your skin as they brushed over your arm.
"I think they will be relieved that you are home, Tuktirey. Upset? Yes, but only because they love you so much and it would pain them if something happened to you."
She sighed, understanding your point before she sat up with a bright grin.
"Thank you, y/n. But you know, we are friends now, so you can call me Tuk." You felt your heartstrings tug at her admission, and a soft smile grew on your face.
"Thank you Tuk, I could not ask for a better friend than you." She hugged you tightly around the neck as you patted her back gently, before offering your hand to help her down the tree.
Once the pair of you had reached the forest floor, you made to set off for Home Tree when a loud and wild snort had your tail swinging in alarm. You pushed Tuk behind you as an large angtsìk made its way into the clearing, it's eyes settling on you as it pawed the ground with fury, asserting it's dominance.
You narrowed your eyes, tail lashing out as you brandished your fangs in a loud hiss, ears pinned against your head. With your other hand, you reached for your blade keeping your eyes trained on your target.
Seeing the fire in your gaze, the angtsìk pounded it's hooves into the leaves and charged. You waited, counting each beat of its hooves down till the last second before you leapt for its back. It roared beneath your grip as you hung onto the roof of its head, your fingers digging into its scales.
Reering back with vengeance the animal struck you with it's head, the hard skin leaving a deep gash in your arm. Hissing, you grabbed the angtsìk by its head and held it while you swung your queue from behind, forming tsaheylu.
You closed your eyes as you felt the animal's fear, and it's anger, the strength beneath every breath, and the power in his stance.
Opening your eyes as the animal came to a slow trot, you ran your hand down it's side as you spoke softly.
"Mawey, I do not wish to fight." You felt peace rush through the bond and you smiled softly as you sat straighter on the angtsìk.
"Y/n!" You looked up as Tuk ran from behind the safety of her hiding place, making her way to your side. You smiled down at her as she looked up at you in awe.
"You managed to tame a angtsìk, you're so cool!" She exclaimed in excitement. You smiled at her before shaking your head in disagreement.
"No, Tuk. You cannot tame a beautiful creature such as this, we simply formed respect for one another. Now, come, we have been away for far too long."
Tumblr media
Neteyam te Suli Neytiri'ite felt his heart pound beneath his azure skin, his ears twitching as he ventured deeper into the forest, trailing you.
He knew if his parents caught wind of his disappearance, they'd skin him, possibly tie his tail in a knot, eywa knows his mother was not one to be trifled with. But, he needed this. He yearned for the days before his near brush with death, the days where his family didn't walk on eggshells around him, was that the correct expression his father had taught him? Tail swishing, he focused back on task as he watched from beneath the leaves of a yovo bush as you, and his sister conversed.
He felt his heart rate slow as he gazed upon the form of his sister, happy to see you had kept your promise, and even more pleased at how you had comforted her. His heart rate increased considerably in those few moments of peace as a large angtsìk made its presence known as he watched in awe and trepidation as you managed to duel the beast and not only remain relatively unharmed but formed tsaheylu.
He felt his heart flutter in his chest, as he looked upon your form. You glowed with pride, honor, and love for your people. He felt his tail swaying with giddiness as unknown feelings crept up on him at the sight of your smile and he flinched as your eyes suddenly connected with his, from beneath his hiding place. He ducked, and taking one last glance at you he turned, and ran from the direction he came.
Tumblr media
You watched with unbridled curiosity as the eldest of the Olo'eyktan's children, ran off, quite literally with his tail between his legs. You knew he only meant to see to it that you kept your promise in finding his sister, and based on how he had not made his presence known, he most likely was not meant to be there. So, you held your tongue, focusing on Tuk as she rambled on about her family and the new friends she had discovered while she was hiding in the trees.
As you returned to the base of hometree, you could see the Olo'eyktan, and his mate, along with the rest of your sisters, waiting for your return. You watched as their eyes widened upon seeing you on the back of an angtsìk, and you felt delight well in your chest as you disconnected the bond carefully, and dropped from the animal. You turned, and helped Tuk down as well as you brought her closer to her family, watching her mother hug her with tearful eyes as Toruk Makto caressed her head.
A nudge from behind had you turning to see the angtsìk who rumbled in displeasure at your departure, and you smiled as you pressed your forehead to his snout, leaning away carefully from his large fanned out horns.
"Irayo, my friend. I will call you, tíflrr. For you are brave, and gentle." You patted the angtsìk as he rumbled once again, pushing his head against your chest fondly before he turned and trotted back into the forest.
As you faced hometree, your ears pressed against your head in astonishment as the Olo'eyktan watched you with proud eyes. Putting your fingers to your forehead you greeted him, as he did the same.
"Toruk Makto." You stumbled to a bow, eyes downcast. Though you had been confident in your first meeting, you still felt intimidated by this warrior who had accomplished so much at your age.
A gentle head patted your shoulder, lifting you from your bow. You gazed into the warm eyes of Neytíri, a fearsome warrior, and legend amongst the na'vi. You held back a gasp as you realized your inspiration was standing before you.
"Irayo, y/n te Ta'hlu Ite. You have brought my daughter home, and formed tsaheylu with anangtsìk, one of the fiercest animals of our forests." You watched as the Olo'eyktan stepped up beside her, along with Ta'hlu who gazed at you with love and pride.
"Y/n, for your bravery, courage and responsibility for my daughter's safe return, we gift you this spear, wielded from the bark of hometree, vines from a yovo bush, and blessed by the ancestors." You felt tears form in your eyes, your ears twitching as cheers rang from the na'vi, calling your name. Everything you worked for up to this moment, to feel accepted, to feel worthy.
You locked eyes with Ta'hlu who nodded at you, holding her fingers to her forehead before bringing them down. You copied the gesture, hands shaking as you turned to accept the gift from the Olo'eyktan.
"Irayo, Toruk Makto. I will not forget this moment. I will do well to wield this spear proudly to honor you, and our people."
He smiled, playfully nudging you with his hand as he shook his head in disagreement.
"You do not need to address me as such, you may call me Jake Sully. You have done well, evi." You grinned, running your hand down the sharp point of the spear as your hair fell over your eyes. Your tail swinging with pure joy, and gratitude.
"Irayo, Jakesullí."
You could only hope to continue to bring honor to your people.
As you gazed upon your people, Neteyam watched you with a twinkle in his eye, his tail swinging in content, as his heart continued to flutter at your happiness.

"Salew, hufwe! Salew!" You yipped as your ikran dipped, skimming his wings across the ponds of the forest, his lime green wings twinkling beneath the rays of the sun.
You closed your eyes, trusting in your ikran and his ability to guide you, and savored the chill of the winds, the excitement that came with flying. You could remember the very first time you had been chosen by your ikran, forming tsaheylu, and taking your first flight.
"You must not hesitate, it could mean life or death, you understand evi?" Ta'hlu bent down to meet your eyes, her hand coming up to rest on your shoulder in comfort. You nodded, lower lip trembling with nerves but you forced it back. Straightening up as you handed her your bow.
Your ears twitched as the ikrans eyed you, a few snarling but not making a move to meet you. Your tail flickered behind you in agitation as the ikrans continued to dance away, none finding interest.
Just as you felt your frustrations rise, the ground shook as a large ikran landed before you. You looked up with wide eyes as its scales shimmered underneath the sun, hues of lime green and jet black creating an intimidating but beautiful sight. It met your eyes with a glare, lips pulling back to reveal sharpened teeth as it roared, sending a shiver up your spine.
You felt a grin creep onto your lips as you bared your fangs in a hiss, ears pinned back and eyes narrowed as a growl built up in your chest.
The ikran met your challenge head on, scraping the ground with its wings as it crawled towards you, its shadow encasing your own.
You leapt for it, hands grasping at the rope between your fingers as you swung it towards the mouth of the beast.
You yipped in victory when the rope snagged around the ikrans mouth, snapping it closed as the ikran screeched in anger, trying to dislodge the offending item. You climbed the back of it, wrestling with the ikran as it did it's best to throw you off.
"Tsaheylu, evi! Tsaheylu!" You heard Ta'hlu shout, her tone edged in worry. You obliged, quickly grabbing your queue, and connecting with the beast who stilled as you felt one another through the bond.
"Mawey, mawey." You stroked the ikrans scales, breathing slowly. You did not hesitate to guide it towards the cliff edge as you heard the cheers of the Olo'ekytan, and the other warriors in training, including his sons.
With a sharp exhale, you closed your eyes, and let yourself fall, your body pushing against the wind of pandora, as you breathed in sync with your ikran, only one thought on your mind.
'Fly'
A sharp nudge brought you back from your reminiscing, and you opened your eyes as you looked down at hufwe who chirped indicating you'd reached hometree.
You smiled, stroking his scales in thanks as the two of you glided down back to hometree, a feeling of complete content, and trust exuberant through the bond.
Taking your ionar from above your eyes as you no longer needed it, you grinned as you detached from hufwe, nodding to the na'vi who greeted you with smiles, and praise. You were still getting used to the respect, and admiration of the clan that came with being the lead warrior of the tíhawnu sì. Especially after saving the Olo'ekytan's daughter awhile back, your name had become well known around the clan.
With a smile, you headed for your home, offering smiles and polite nods along the way.
Tumblr media
"Y/n! You're back!" A cheer of your name caused your ears to perk up, as you looked up from where you were stringing leaves together, creating another top for yourself as you had outgrown your other one.
At the sight of the familiar sully, you grinned lying down your work in anticipation for the hug you were going to receive. Tuk had formed an attachment to you, seeing as you had saved her life, and the two of you had become quite fond of each other, spending as much time as you could when you weren't training or sent on missions.
"Tirey, it is good to see you." You greeted Tuk with a nickname she deemed only you could use. You tried not to grin at that. you failed .
"I missed you!" Tuk grinned lying across your lap. You opened your mouth to reply when you spotted another blue form who had been behind Tuk.
You rose a brow as the oldest son of the Olo'ekytan smiled sheepishly at you, his tail swishing happily as he gazed at you.
"Neteyam." You greeted with a polite nod. His tail swayed harder as his name left your lips, and you blinked. Seeming to know where your gaze had gone, Neteyam forcefully grabbed his tail, and scratched at his neck nervously.
"Y/n, uh, I was just coming to remind Tuk not to stay out past eclipse." He coughed, straightening his posture as he nodded in self assurance.
Tuk sat up at her eldest brother's words, and gave him an odd look, confusion marring her features.
"I thought you said you came along because you wanted to see y/n-"
Neteyam hissed with wide eyes, grabbing Tuk by the arm, firm but gentle as he waved at her words dismissively, giving you a faux apologetic smile.
"Ha, sorry about this one, she hasn't had her nap. I'll be seeing you later!" In a blink the two were gone, and you were left, blinking at the space where they previously stood.
Tumblr media
It was the next day, and you found yourself sparring with Ta'hlu. You spun the spear between your hands gracefully as you blocked each hit sent your way, forcing down the grin that threatened to come up when you bested her.
Before you could offer her a hand, a branch snapped, and the two of you looked up for the source of sound.
You tilted your head as Neteyam sheepishly moved closer into the clearing, his tail swaying nervously.
"Neteyam?" You frowned.
"Uh, you, you fight good." He stated after a pregnant pause.
You looked to Ta'hlu in confusion, and found her giving you a knowing look, her lips curled in amusement.
"Thank you. Did you wish to train? Ta'hlu is a very good teacher, you will learn well." You nodded at him before taking your leave, not seeing the disappointed grimace on his face.
Tumblr media
A week had passed, and you noticed the eldest Sully had made many more appearances in your general vicinity.
You were unsure as to the reason, as he seemed to clam up whenever you approached him.
So, you returned to your daily tasks, hoping this awkward phase of his would fade in time.
"Y/n?"
Eywa was definitely getting a kick out of this.
You held in a sigh, lifting your head, and meeting the familiar golden eyes with specks of green that gleamed at your attention.
"Neteyam." You greeted.
"I uh, I noticed your last top had torn during training. So, I asked my mother for help, and uh, I well, I made this for you." He thrusted something towards you, not recognizing his own strength, and consequently hitting you in the nose with said item.
You jerked back, holding your nose as you felt a sharp sting as crimson liquid slowly trickled out of your nose.
"Oh shit! Oh- fuck, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to." Neteyam hovered with wide eyes, dropping the object to lift your hands from your face. He winced as he surveyed the area, his ears and tails drooping.
You pat his hand standing up as you held your nose, waving away his apologies as you made for the Tsahík's tent.
As soon as you disappeared from view, Neteyam hit his forehead with his palms, his tail lashing in aggravation.
Later, would find a repentant Neteyam approaching his father who tended to his weapons, his tail swishing with interest as he polished his gun.
"Dad?"
"Hmm."
"How do you apologize for giving the girl you like a bloody nose?"
