A writer’s guide to forests: traveling through the woods
Getting from point A to point B is something that both people in real life and the characters of your story will have to figure out. Whether as a means to get to a plot point, or as a part of the plot itself, travel presents opportunities for the writer.
Hack ‘n slash- Where paths are nonexistent, your characters will literally have to blaze a trail (the ‘blaze’ in this case has nothing to do with fire. Instead it is a trail marker made by carving a mark into a tree. The mark resembles the white patch seen on the forehead of mammals, most often horses.) Being the pioneer is slow going, especially if the undergrowth is thick and requires clearing. Cut bamboo can go through the foot, poison oak and poison ivy can give a nasty rash, and biting insects can make life miserable. And then there is the matter of marking the trail. A character on the run will not want to advertise their location and will do their best to keep their trail hidden. But for others, they will want to mark the trail. Stone cairns, arrows, blaze marks in trees, and even sticks and knotted grass can point out the path to other travelers. This can be helpful to others, but it can also present a danger. Thieves and outlaws can create false trails that lead travelers into a trap or ambush.
Game trails- Animals have their habits. They like to take the same path between places. Over time these develop into trails that crisscross the forest floor. For a character on the run, or those who needs to make haste, these are a tempting choice to follow. But be careful. Some animals are able to traverse terrain too difficult for humans (narrow ledges, near vertical faces, and the gaps underneath fallen trees are not fun places to be). And your characters may encounter more than deer or rabbits. Predator species hang out around game trails as they can be fruitful hunting grounds.
Existing paths and roads- Roads can range from simple dirt paths to paved highways. These will be the most direct routes between the principle settlements in your story. Prosperous areas will have well maintained roads with travelers and patrols using them frequently. Characters may also encounter watchtowers, farms, and inns along the way. Poorer regions, those affected by war, or more remote regions will have less well maintained roads, fewer travelers, and few to no amenities between towns. And if your characters can use the roads, expect hostile armies, outlaws, and highwaymen to use them as well. And where the roads go may be limited to the most populated regions, forcing your characters to leave the path if they want to get to isolated villages, caves, temples, or even a wizard’s tower.
Use the water- Of course, you can have your characters forgo land transportation and use the rivers, lakes, and seas. Rafts, ferry boats, and ocean going ships are all viable options. It should be noted that these are not perfect solutions. Rapids and waterfalls will force characters back onto land until they find gentler waters. Storms can delay or sink vessels, and cold winters will freeze water over. Of course, a frozen river or lake is just an excuse to get out the ice skates. Droughts will dry up streams and small lakes, and recent rains can turn placid waters into unsurvivable whitewater.
Up in the trees- Hate to burst your bubble here, but swinging from vines is something that only exists in fiction. If you try to do this in real life, it will not work out well…provided you can even find sufficient vines or fig roots. Of course, in your story, you are free to do what you want. Nothing is going to stop you…well except maybe for your readers and the critics who will pan you for using what may be considered an overused and unoriginal trope. Other options include bridges, cable cars, or even zip lines.
Taking flight- Of course, the forest will not pose an obstacle if your characters can simply fly. This can be achieved by characters that possess wings of some sort. They could have a winged mount, or they could hitch a ride on a vehicle like a helicopter or ultralight plane.
Underground- If in doubt, take a cue from moles and dwarves. Tunnels can serve the same function as roads, with all the benefits and drawbacks included. Of course your characters will also have to be aware that cave-ins are a real and present danger. These can be natural, or deliberate sabotage. And your characters best hope all the recent tunneling hasn’t awaken any ancient evils from long ago…

One on the bridge, leaves rustling in the wind; one under the bridge, rain splashing in the river. For a moment, neither spoke, both simply looking at the other. The misty rain blurred the line between heaven and earth almost poignantly. Fallen bamboo leaves drifted between the two of them now and again, carried by the wind and rain. [...] Mo Ran knew that he couldn’t be bothered to put up a barrier for himself, but an idea popped into his head, and he tossed the umbrella over. “I’ll give this to you, catch.”

Chinese traditional instruments cover of track “Myriad of Lights” from the 2022 Lantern Rite event by Zi De Guqin Studio/自得琴社.  Costumes are Song dynasty style hanfu.
Instruments from left to right in ensemble scene (note:  the guy second from right is an actor and did not play an instrument):
Dizi/笛子:  transverse bamboo flute; unique characteristic being the dimo/笛膜, or thin bamboo fiber membrane that gives it its unique bright tone.
Erhu/二胡:  bowed stringed instrument, has only two strings.  Usually serves a primary role similar to a violin.
Guqin/古琴:  sometimes translated as “Chinese zither”; seven-stringed plucked instrument that is fairly ancient; in ancient times it was simply referred to as qin/琴, and the gu/古, meaning old or ancient, was added on to the name in modern times.
Dagu/大鼓:  traditional large drum; has a variety of uses in ancient times, including raising morale in the military; in modern contemporary Chinese drama/cinema they are commonly used in background music for fight scenes.
Guzheng/古筝:  stringed plucked instrument, has movable bridges; in ancient times it was simply referred to as zheng/筝, and the gu/古, meaning old or ancient, was added on to the name in modern times.
Pipa/琵琶:  stringed plucked instrument; came from Middle East; originally played horizontally with a plectrum (this can still be seen with Japanese biwa, since pipa was the predecessor of the biwa), and over time it eventually became finger-plucked.
Instrument not included in ensemble scene:
Bo/钹:  small cymbal with a greater curvature at the middle (larger cymbals with less curvature are usually referred to as Cha/镲); here played using small mallets.

The Uses of Adversity, Ch. 15: Live to Tell

Janus depositions Logan in preparation for their court battle with Kelly. He tells Janus everything. Well, nearly everything. Everything relevant, Logan is certain.
I have a tale to tell Sometimes it gets so hard to hide it well I was not ready for the fall Too blind to see the writing on the wall
A man can tell a thousand lies I've learned my lesson well Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned 'Til then, it will burn inside of me - Live to Tell, Madonna
Roman stayed until Saturday afternoon. They spent the night on the couch, talking and… to be honest, each had dozed a bit, as well. Logan had fallen asleep first, warm and safe, wrapped in Roman's arms, holding him just as closely. The next morning, the boys didn’t question Roman’s presence and simply greeted him like he belonged there.
Despite his worries, they’d had a blissful weekend together, with cake and leftovers for breakfast, and a thrift store hunt for books and Doctor Who DVDs later in the day. Saying goodbye to Roman had been difficult, with wild fantasies of making a permanent space for him flitting through Logan's mind. But Remy's scheme to meet up the next weekend for the movie gave them all something to look forward to.
Remy’s housemate Emile came by Sunday afternoon after spending the weekend with his parents and they’d all fumbled their way through making sushi with the kit the boys had given him for his birthday. Emile had even gifted him a little matcha tea set, the sakura petals on the bamboo finish perfectly matching the kit from his sons.
By Sunday night, Remy, Virgil, and Emile had driven back up to Bellingham, and Logan had dropped off Patton at Kelly’s for her week with him. Neither had mentioned the papers.
He took his time getting ready for bed, drawing out the rote tasks. He flossed twice, refilled the hand soap bottles, changed out the towels in all the bathrooms. The weekend’s busyness, his sons’ laughter filling the house—and, thanks to Roman, his own—had pushed away his worries about Kelly’s filing and Monday’s deposition with Janus.
Now that he was alone again, it was impossible to think about anything else.
More times than he wanted to admit, he’d picked up his phone, tapping open his ongoing chat with Roman, and tried to imagine what he would say if he invited him over. Twice, he’d even started to type out the message, but no matter how he worded it, his request sounded… disrespectful. Dirty. Hey, Ro, my sons aren’t home. Wanna come over?
Shaking his head, he went downstairs to finish the laundry he’d neglected that weekend. Once that was done, he moved on to strip all the beds and, in a few loads, had washed all the sheets and blankets. By the time he’d folded the last comforter, still warm and smelling like that Saturday Roman had found him at the laundromat, the first birds had begun their morning calls. Logan made his bed, brewed a fresh pot of coffee, then stood in front of the kitchen window to watch the sunrise slowly open the blooms in his flower box.
When the bottom edge of the sun cleared the horizon, Logan rinsed his cup and got ready for work. If he left soon, he could take the bus in and not need to worry about the traffic over the bridge.
~
“A little odd to be on the other side of one of these, isn’t it?” Janus remarked as he sat across from him in his office. He tried not to listen when Janus asked Beatrice to ensure they weren’t disturbed, though he’d appreciated the way Janus had asked him to bring a stack of files from his office as a subtle subterfuge.
“More than a little,” he nodded.
Humming, Janus flipped through folders on his desk. “I see from the proceedings you represented yourself—”
“You have my court records?” Logan interrupted, eyes wild as he tried to recall what other information might be hidden away in those files.
Janus looked up, a faint frown wrinkling his brow. “I’m your attorney.”
“Right, yes, of course… I—I don’t mean…” He looked down at his hands. Janus was certain to rescind the Assistant AIC offer after all of this. This was even worse than the review of his Q-Law cases.
“Did you consult with anyone?”
“No.” He shook his head. “I… took care of it. Kelly was the petitioner. She… It was… I just wanted it done.”
Logan wasn’t sure if Roman had warned him or not, but Janus started very slowly with the rest of his questions, building out a chronological list of events in their marriage and separation. He captured the boys’ names and birthdays—they’d been redacted from the court record. They talked a bit about Virgil’s birth and his surgeries. Logan even told Janus how Virgil’s genetic screening had showed a hereditary component to the defect in his diaphragm. He admitted how, afterward, he’d had his own genome screened and confirmed he carried the gene.
Janus didn’t ask for more details, so he let the rest of that thread drop.
Instead, he began to ask about the… quality of his relationship with Kelly. Logan bit the inside of his cheek, fighting for control. He’d just managed to win a sliver of respect from his boss. He couldn’t… He couldn’t just throw that all away with some overly emotional reaction.
“We… we disagreed on…” Logan sucked in a slow breath, forcing his twitching hands to calm. Janus’ eyes flicked down to his lap and made a note in the margin of his yellow legal pad. “On a few important things about the boys.” He shrugged, “Like all married people, I suppose.”
He nodded slowly, writing without taking his eyes off of Logan’s expression. “Your parents… disagreed a lot?”
In one breath, Logan was back in his parents’ old rambler in Oregon. He sat on his closet floor, making flashcards, a heavy AP History textbook open on his lap. Surrounded by hanging clothes, with his blanket shoved against the gap at the bottom, his father’s shouted words and his mother’s occasional responses were muffled and difficult to make out.
But the tones were unmistakable. And far too familiar.
Logan couldn’t stop his hands from shaking so he crossed his arms over his belly, gripping and releasing the sides of his shirt. “Excellent motivation to get a scholarship to UW and move out on my own,” he said, an attempt at levity. His voice cracked at the end and Janus simply made another note on his legal pad.
Janus tapped the end of his pen against his lips and went quiet. Logan had observed him cross examine reticent witnesses often enough to have seen this tactic of his before. Given enough time under his ‘I have all day, how about you?’ gaze, even other attorneys who knew it was coming would start to sweat and say anything to fill the silence.
Logan was well practiced at holding his tongue.
“You were married for…” Janus flipped back to the front page and did the math. “Eighteen years.” Faster than Logan had expected, he’d moved on to the ‘I already know everything, you might as well answer my questions’ stage. “This is difficult. Difficult to talk about, difficult to re-experience,” he said, his voice softer than Logan had braced himself for and his eyes darted up, an unfamiliar expression on his boss’ face. “Believe me, I understand.”
He nodded, then lowered his head and waited for Janus' next question, shields up and ready.
“Talk to me, Logan.” Without seeing his face, it almost sounded like a plea. “What made you finally decide to divorce?”
Eyes closed to avoid the inevitable ridicule on Janus’ expression, Logan forced a slow, deep breath. Still, his voice shook shamefully when he spoke. “How much of this has Roman already told you?”
“None." Logan looked up, the honesty in Janus' voice too strong to ignore. “Roman can be a bit of a drama king—”
“Excuse me?” Logan’s voice was sharper than he’d intended but instead of looking angry at his interjection, Janus merely looked surprised and… pleased?
“As is my Remus,” he said, the tone of that ‘my’ hanging in the air, as though he noted some other parallel between the brothers. Janus’ smile morphed into a bit of a smirk. “As am I, so I’ve been told.” Janus watched his reaction with interest and for a moment, Logan could have sworn his boss was about to add him to his list of ‘drama kings.’ Logan looked down and smoothed his tie for the sake of having somewhere else to look. “Personally, I think the world could use more drama kings,” he continued. “You never need doubt where you stand with us.”
Speak for yourself, Logan thought but did not say.
“Regardless.” Janus grew serious. “Unless you asked him to tell me something personal you’d shared with him, Roman would not breathe a word of it.” He lowered his legal pad. “And, aside from a very short list of legally required disclosures, the same is true for me. Your secrets are safe.”
He pinched his sides, a distraction from the tears already burning the backs of his eyes. Janus waited, but when Logan didn’t speak for several long moments, he prodded. “To do my job, Logan, I need to know everything.”
Logan deflated, the last shreds of his pride spooled in a tangled mess on the floor. “I know,” he sighed.
“Was it more than 'disagreements' between you?” Janus asked again, even softer this time.
Logan’s bottom lip trembled, but the harder he tried to control it, the worse it got. He nodded and swallowed hard against the lump in his throat.
“Much more.”
~
Eighteen years of practicing law plus two decade’s worth of his own personal experiences had muted Janus’ expressiveness in the face of misery. Remus worked hard to ensure it was a mask he could drop, that he had spaces where he was free to cry and shout and stumble and laugh. His husband spent an inordinate amount of energy and love ensuring he would not be swallowed up and consumed by his jaded attorney façade.
Janus clung to that jadedness now, letting it carry him as he fought to keep a mostly neutral expression while Logan recounted the gradual descent from storybook romance to a narrow escape from Hansel and Gretel’s witch.
It was a familiar story. While Q-Law received most of its funding from its flashier cases, the national attention garnered through their work on major legislation, fancy galas, and private benefactors, from a caseload perspective, a plurality of their work was in family law. Domestic violence cases in particular. Q-Law was there to serve a need in the queer community and, tragically, that’s where the greatest need lay.
What made this story different for Janus was he didn’t need to ask if anyone at his client’s workplace had the faintest inkling of just how bad, just how dangerous his home life had been.
Janus had had none.
Shame bubbled in his chest as Roman’s tight-lipped admonition ran laps through his mind. ‘Maybe you don’t actually know him as well as you think you do.’ This interview proved he most certainly did not.
He turned to a fresh page. “And which of these injuries did you actually seek care for?” Logan curled in on himself, the implied accusation harsh even to Janus’ ears. “That came out wrong, I’m sorry. I simply wish to retrieve hospital records,” he said.
“Do you—” Logan shivered and Janus checked the thermostat. The office was set to 71°F. “Do you really think that will be necessary?”
He frowned and sat back in his chair. Janus was accustomed to clients, particularly DV clients, demonstrating resistance to reliving and retreading these parts of their lives. But Logan was a lawyer. A lawyer who, thanks to his now explainable eagerness to pick up so many of the toughest DV cases, was arguably the most experienced DV trial lawyer in the firm.
What wasn’t he getting about this?
“We’ve only seen the initial petition, Logan,” Janus began as carefully as he could. A spark of annoyance he couldn’t quite suppress buzzed in his mind. “If she alleges any sort of—”
“I never hurt her. Not even—” His voice fell away and his eyes were drawn to the door. Fuck, he was losing him.
Janus looked down at the desk between them. He stood, wincing when Logan flinched. He brought his legal pad and a pen and sat at the other end of the couch, nothing between them now but a few feet of overstuffed leather sofa.
“What can you share, Logan?” he asked softly.
“I…” He sighed, shoulders curled over and he held out his right hand. A vague recollection of a college sports injury explaining away the titanium pins that triggered court metal detectors flicked across Janus’ mind.
“I had surgery at Evergreen for my wrist fracture. Started at the emergency room. There will be X-rays.” Janus’ pen flew across the page. “I left… AMA from Recovery.” He massaged the bone just above his wrist and from here, Janus could see the three little white lines from the incisions. “Kelly came by with the kids and… drove me home.”
“She convinced you to leave against medical advice?”
Logan looked away. “The doctor had called a social worker because my injuries were ‘inconsistent with the patient’s reported cause.’”
Janus nodded slowly and made a few marks on the page before flipping back to review the full list of incidents Logan had recounted. “This was in October 2011?”
“After Patton’s first diagnosis.”
He nodded again and flipped back to the mostly blank page, pen hovering over the sheet, ready for the next set of records to requisition. When Logan remained silent, Janus looked up. “Whenever you’re ready,” he prompted gently.
“That’s it.”
“What do you mean, ‘that’s it?’” He stared at Logan, brow furrowed as he turned again to the pages detailing the times their arguments had turned violent. The times that bitch had turned violent.
“That was the only injury for which I sought care.” His voice was stiff. Formal.
“What?” Janus hissed, calm façade cracking as he scanned the list. “You—your—The fractures in your hand?” Logan shook his head, eyes on the floor. “Your concussions, the burn, the—the tear in your lobe, you—”
“Dermabond surgical adhesive was sufficient to stop the bleeding.“
Janus scoffed. “You can’t just order that shit from Amazon!”
Logan merely shrugged. “It’s a basic veterinary supply. It isn’t that difficult to acquire.”
“I see,” Janus said more to his notepad than his client. Logan had used fucking vetbond on himself then went to work the next day like nothing had happened. His employee. His co-worker. Sour acid churned in his stomach.
‘He’s your friend, too…’
Roman had been wrong. Janus had not been his friend.
He watched Logan over the top of his legal pad. Shame crawling up his spine, he wondered how many times he’d fucking laughed when Devin had sat where Logan was now and remarked how clumsy their quiet co-worker must be to so often have had some sort of limp or bandage or…
No. He couldn’t undo any of that. But he could fight like hell for Logan now.
“Do you have friends who would be willing to support any of this with contemporaneous reports?” he asked, trying a new tactic. “Neighbors? Anyone you’ve been close with who knew what had really happened and would give a statement?”
“No,” Logan said. His fingers tapped the side of his knee in what more closely resembled a tremor than a fidget.
“What makes you so sure they’d be unwilling to come forward?” Despite humanity's general unwillingness to rock the boat even to save a person from drowning, Janus couldn’t imagine everyone in Logan’s life would be so reluctant to help. With the notable exception of Devin, Logan had always been kind and thoughtful to everyone in the office, unerringly polite and considerate. The first to pass around a card for birthdays or tragedies, despite the glaring omission of his own. There had to be someone.
“We could ensure their anonymity if they’re concerned about… social ramifications. She wouldn’t need to know they’d said anything.”
It was like convincing a rock. He wouldn’t even look up. “Logan, we’ve done it before. Domestic violence situations, particularly when witnesses consider both parties friends and—”
Logan shook his head. “You misunderstand me. I mean I… I have no… confidants from that period of my life. Your, ah…” Logan crossed and uncrossed his legs then wrapped his arms around his stomach, hugging himself. “Your brother-in-law is my first friend in a very long time.”
He looked down at his statement. “You… “ Sighing, he set the legal pad face down on the coffee table and turned in his seat to face Logan properly. “You have been through so much and…” He met his eyes.
Janus used to wonder how people could be so blind when the people around them were suffering. How people could waltz through their days, ignoring the obvious hurt of those around them. But he’d been just as bad. Just as oblivious. “I'm sorry I never noticed the signs. That I never tried to help you.”
Logan looked away, rubbing the fingers of his left hand. Janus had always thought it a nervous habit. Now he wondered how much the mis-fused bones pained him. And how much of it was a reminder of that fight.
Finally, Logan shrugged. “I made every effort to ensure there was nothing for anyone to notice.”
They sat in awkward silence for a few moments, then Janus stood. “Can I make you some tea?” Logan looked up, surprise cutting through his mask. Janus smiled and spread his hands, gesturing toward the little kettle and bamboo box of matcha. “I know I could use a cup. I imagine you could, too.”
Logan huffed. “Got anything stronger than tea?”
Shaking his head, Janus chuckled and pulled his five-year Alcoholics Anonymous chip from his pocket. “Nope.”
“Oh, fuck, I’m sorry, I—I didn’t know.”
“It’s all right, Logan. We… we’ve both had our secrets, haven’t we?” Janus checked the kettle and clicked it on, then pulled two mugs from underneath the tea caddy. “How long have we known each other?”
“Almost twenty-two years.”
Janus shook his head. “Far too long to not actually know each other.”
“Perhaps,” he said.
The water rumbled in the kettle and Janus whisked it into the powder in the chawan, the steam carrying the bright, clean scent through the room.
“May I help with the tea?” Logan began to rise. “You don’t need to serve me.”
“Yes, actually, I do.” Janus looked over his shoulder and winked. “You’re older, so I pour the tea.”
Sitting back down, Logan shook his head, a tiny scowl wrinkling his brow. “I can’t be that much older than you.”
“Very nearly nine months,” Janus smiled as he poured Logan’s tea, then his own, and set both cups down on the table.
Logan’s face couldn’t decide if he should glare or grin.
“Don’t worry,” Janus nodded and waited for Logan to pick up his cup. “I promise I won’t rub it in too much.”
Smiling, Logan took a sip and set down his cup.
“Besides, it’s bad manners to mock the elderly.”
A sudden belly laugh burst from the ordinarily quiet man.
“Careful there,” Janus murmured, sipping his tea. “Too much excitement at your age can't be healthy.” Shoulders shaking, Logan laughed until there were tears in his eyes and Janus passed him another tissue.
Janus slid a little closer on the couch and smiled. “That’s the first time I’ve ever heard you really laugh.”
“Well,” Logan nodded and raised his cup. “Here’s to twenty-two more years of hearing it.”
By the time they finished their tea, the clock on Janus’ desk chimed six times. “Damn,” he muttered, pulling out his phone and confirming just how late it really was. “I hope I’m not keeping you from your boys.”
“No,” Logan shook his head, turning the little cup in his hands. “Not at all. Patton is at Kelly’s this week. I’m not needed.” Janus frowned at his phrasing and Logan fumbled to explain. “He carpooled after school, and the…” He looked down and the desk lamp cast long shadows across his face, exaggerating the dark circles under his eyes. “The quarter’s started at Western.”
“Hmm.” More shaken by Logan's words than he wanted to admit, Janus took their empty cups and placed them in the basin on the bottom shelf of his tea caddy. “Any plans for dinner, then?”

---
sanguineous in nature, the subtlety of its ligneous textures drew itself in soft, closed grains. incarnadine lacquer glossed over the ridges of its luciferin hallmarks. a leering mouth grinning something enviously sinister. with swinish tusks and ferine teeth protruding from its heinous grin. a burly nose scopes the mien of the demon, it's nostrils wide caverns that meet with a point before ascending a taper. where its bridge meets the brow, the creature takes an invidious countenance. in which its brow delves passed the line of sight to bare a malignant scowl. orbs sheen gallantly in gilded chromaticity. its pupils bleak and empty, carrying an endless abyss of darkness. bestial horns billow from either flank of its head, only consummating the onryo's demonian origins. such a perdition, its facade exudes an aura of foreboding. only vanward does this apparition reap contemptuously, as its semblance is incontestably covetous and prejudicial. but it is also melancholy.
for as the apparition bows its occiput, its, or rather, her visage illustrates one of anguish and torment. a woeful banshee whose animosity consumed her. her leering mandible wailed with eternal sorrow. her once scowling brow upturnt in insufferable tribulation. she was a creature driven ill by the refractory hysteria of her abortive desires. a demon born from envy and enmity condemned to a perpetuity of great atrocity and travail. a hannya.
perhaps it was due to her woeful past, that she became so distraught over these frivolous matters. or her primitive ideologies that the concept of true love did in fact exist? otherwise, her habitual persistence to attach herself to those she valued so dearly.
perhaps it had been all three.
but the triviality of these exhibitions were far more pivotal through her own perception than they necessarily tended to be.
and so, as she donned that treen mask that exuded such impenetrable evil, it was much more than just a facade utilized to veil her identity to the people of this land. much more than a symbol of sanguinity to the institutionalized prospects of wano.
it was whom she had become.
when nami and sanji had inquired about her wellbeing, she simply gesticulated. their concerns were met with an impetuous hum, before she removed herself from the cask of sake she had been leant against and began her descent in the opposing direction. she watched the kanjiki on her feet plant circular imprints into the freshly fallen snow. the bamboo brimmed conical upon her head casting a shadow that hid well her bleak bearing.
cerulean jade tresses drape effortlessly over the strong forearm of a swordsman. a delicate, graceful arm rests deliberately over the man's chest. another snakes purposefully round his nape. dainty fingers pressing against the bare skin of his tanned exterior. her face, the temptress, was irresistibly beauteous. fragile features adorn her faultlessly round face. imposing sapphire eyes are framed by her elegant, dark lashes. ones that, even the most recalcitrant of men could not resist gazing into. the same one's that gently kiss the tops of her cheeks with their tips as she rests, head nuzzled at the apex of his broad shoulder. she does not stir, but sleeps soundly in his arms. she does not shiver in respect to the bitter winter that lies outside that old shack they rest in, but rather glows a most pleasant pink in the warmth of his presence. her button nose scrunches in glee, and her scarlet-painted pout simpers in satisfaction of her own actions. it is as if her it is her ambition to evoke some sort of reaction of rango. her intent to forlorn her into a disgraceful disposition.
the envisage in which brook had just itemized to nami, sanji, robin, franky, and herself was an iteration engraved to her memories. one that, despite her pertinacious efforts to cease the illustration, vigorously persisted in her consciousness. perpetually, without clemency. a relentless mental torment that both enraged her and filled her with heartache. with each chimera, her wrathfulness only burgeoned.
zoro's lineament prostrated her mental process. his felicity was present in the way his lips formed a content grin. eyes were shut peacefully in slumber. from the waist up, his body is bare. wrapped meticulously in bandages to aid in rehabilitating his injuries from the day prior. on his right, the cerulean-haired siren wrapped up in his burly arm. which held her against his body by her impossibly thin waist. his left arm was bent back behind his scalp in his customary leisure. he is tranquil. he is serene. his traditionally hardened facade is softened in placidity. zoro seems, reposeful. it was peculiar to see such an anomalous sight. he was empyrean. for such a man known for his devilish nature, celestial was not typically an adjective used to elucidate such a man. on contra, he looked it. and some part of her longed to be able to provide such a comfort for him. she repined it.
prevalent was this matter, as the most recent rendition to the swordsman and the harlot's endeavors. verily, this had been an escalation through a series of irrefutable instances. there had been the initial indication of interest when zoro had demonstrated his ungodly strength to protect her. her compulsivity in making such calculated displays of affection toward him only reinstated the cogitation. most always, when rango had seen them together, the vamp insinuated a unrequited exploitation toward the moss-haired pirate. only, he had yet to draw cease to such unnecessary exhibitions. this, however, this had been the conjuncture. at the forefront of all their impertinent acts, was the two of them sleeping together. that only solidified rango's tribulations of her unlabeled lover and the mysterious courtesan. conceivably, it was consequential that she and her crewmate had not yet defined the venereal relations between them.
and then, as the golden rays of day shine prettily through the cracks of that old shack, infuriatingly faultless unto the other woman's striking beauty. a tender caress, precedented by the amorous osculate of her besmirched pucker placed fondly amongst the fine line of that idiot's jaw. then he, so virile, returning the predilection serried the breadth between their veneer's with a silken kiss to her forehead.
amethyst optics glimmer with saturnine tears. aggrieved, her lips cusp and writhe into a lour. anger and sadness birth feral resentment. for the heart was a heavy burden, and love was a pernicious affair.

Seven Bridges - Love and Peace?: Chapter 2
Location: Yumenosaki Student Council Room Characters: Ritsu, Mao & Hitsugi
TL Note:
Tanzaku are colourful strips of paper people use to write their wishes on. They’re then hung on a bamboo tree in celebration for Tanabata.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mao: To be blunt, there was an issue found in the “Tanabata” proposal you submitted yesterday, Anzu.
And it’s a pretty fatal one at that.
Hitsugi: Ricchan-san! Ricchan-san! What’ve you been doing for a while now!?
Ritsu: I’m making tea for Maa-kun and Anzu. Because I want them to see how considerate I am.
Hitsugi: I’ll help, I’ll help! I’m ranked the lowest here! Whaa~!
Ritsu: Hey, you’re actually going to get the way so can you not…?
Mao: *Ignores the two* …As you know, “Tanabata” is one of the highest-ranking events at Yumenosaki – in other words, it’s an “S1”.
“SS” was ranked the highest in the past but ever since it fell under ES’ control, “S1” is only rising higher and higher.
It’s something huge that Yumenosaki cannot remove by any means.
But thankfully, we have an outstanding “producer” with us.
I’m talking about you, Anzu.
From the start, “Tanabata” was a high-quality event that you created last year with the help of everyone.
It was a huge success last year and the public held the event in high regard as well.
Frankly, it was so flawless we could easily reuse the same proposal this year too.
The idol industry has changed ever since ES was established, but the audience itself or their numbers hasn't changed in Yumenosaki, for better or worse.
Our amazing upperclassmen have already graduated – even hearing the phrase “hasn’t changed” can be a compliment. It’s a good thing that we’re able to maintain the status quo.
I realised that, felt relieved and let my guard down.
That’s how I ended up approving the “Tanabata” proposal you submitted without carefully checking it, Anzu. I figured if it was you, we shouldn’t have any problems.
I believe in your skills and you have last year’s achievements to prove it. I simply overestimated the fact that things would also be fine this year.
That’s why it’s my responsibility. Sorry.
It looks like everyone’s been pretty busy after ES was established and it’s probably a bit weird for me to say this, but Yumenosaki Academy has started becoming more active after our revolution.
Everyone is motivated and is submitting more proposals than ever.
The number of students grew and the number of units has also increased with them – proposals for “S3” have also been flooding in.
I probably don’t need to explain this to you, but “S3” was what we called “B1” in the past. It was a dreamfest created and run independently by the students.
Up until the final stage of last year, it wasn’t officially recognised by the Student Council and needed to be supervised, though.
Now that it’s officially recognised as a dreamfest called “S3”, they can receive a budget from the Student Council.
We’ve been getting a lot of proposals from eager students who’ve started realising that they won’t need to pay out of their own pockets and can stand boldly on stage without anyone scolding them.
That act in itself should be, well, very welcome. No, that should be what we were aiming for this entire time.
We were aiming for an active Yumenosaki – one where everyone is eager and full of motivation.
Yumenosaki was a place where people were living like they were dead and we wanted to change that. We “Trickstar” rose up and started a revolution.
So I guess we reap what we sow. We don't have the right to criticise the way things currently are.
But dealing with this mountain of proposals is basically physically impossible. That’s why I thought I should cut corners where I could.
I didn’t mean to be lazy though. I figured your proposal shouldn’t have any issues in the first place and gave the stamp of approval right away.
I thought I had to keep my hands moving and move on to the next proposal otherwise I’d never get through them all.
But I started sorting out the budget and went to read over the “Tanabata” proposal that was already taking place. Then I realised something huge.
Anzu. Answer me honestly. Did you really come up with the “Tanabata” proposal this time?
If you really did, then I’m a little disappointed. No, disappointed isn’t the right word – I’m confused, I guess.
The “Tanabata” proposal last year was definitely in your style and it was the best.
Thinking back, that was your first proper producer work, huh.
The previous student council president, Tenshouin-senpai, made you do unreasonable things and you were able to meet his expectations because you really did your best.
It was a splendid proposal where anyone could stand on stage if they wanted to, where no idols were left behind.
You even came up with the feature where the audience could get their wish granted if they wrote it on the tanzaku paper[∗]. That was fitting for Tanabata and the fans loved it. It was perfect.
It was an event you put a lot of thought and work into, right?
But I had the impression that you weren’t motivated at all after reading your “Tanabata” proposal this year.

Book 4, Chapter 41 (Part 1)
Over the past several days, winter had come to Huaiyin in earnest. A light snow has started falling over the city, but the lake hasn’t frozen over, and winter here isn’t like in the north either where icicles would hang all over the eaves at the start of winter. Wu Du takes Duan Ling through the avenue on horseback. When they get to the marketplace, they lead their horse by the reins and walk side by side.
It may snow the same way it does in the north, but there’s a peculiar warmth to southern winter, with the smell of coal fires by the side of the road, the humidity in the air from snow melting as soon as it hits the ground with nary a whisper. Wu Du buys some snacks from the street vendors, fried fish, fried shrimp, and marinated quail eggs on bamboo skewers, eating them as they walk.
“Do you like it here?” Wu Du asks.
“It’s so beautiful.” Duan Ling stands at the edge of Lake Wanguang, looking out at the lake as light snow falls on its surface, each snowflake landing to a faint ripple. It doesn’t get cold enough to freeze over, but the water seems thicker so that the snowflakes would linger on the water for a long time before vanishing into the lake.
“If I can live here for three years,” Duan Ling says, “my life would be complete. But I can’t stop thinking about Ye.”
“Your lord and master promised you to take you to the corners of the earth. We’ll have to go everywhere,” Wu Du says. “But now that I’ve taken you out here, you’re missing home.”
Duan Ling is only remembering now — that’s what Wu Du told him when the two of them made their vows of love that day in the mountains, at the site of the White Tiger Hall. He didn’t know that Wu Du has been keeping that in mind even after all this time.
“When I came down from Mount Min back then and went all the way to Jiangzhou, Zheng Yan invited me to Huaiyin as a guest too. But it was at the same time that news of the war kept coming down from the north, so I didn’t have time to stick around and enjoy the view. I had to rush off to the central plains to rescue my master and his wife. Ten years ago, hanging around the lakeshore all by myself wasn’t fun at all. Over the past few years, I’ve been thinking about taking you here.”
They can hear singing coming from across the water as floating pavilions2 traverse the lake. Duan Ling replies, “There are lots of places we haven’t been to yet.”
“Yeah,” Wu Du says, deep in thought. “I’m just worried that once you go back to the palace, it’d be much harder to sneak out. Come on, let’s find a floating pavilion and get a seat.”
The floating pavilions are supposed to be taking guests on board while moored at the pier, but Wu Du simply sets his sights on one while standing in the middle of a bridge before grabbing Duan Ling and making a flying leap at it in a rustle of fabric.
Duan Ling has no idea what kind of a face he should be making — as soon as they land on the floating pavilion there are people crying out in a panic, thinking that an assassin’s hopped aboard. But then Wu Du tosses out a silver ingot, which lands on the counter with a clang.
“A round of drinks for everyone,” Wu Du says. “Got any private rooms left?”
“That was awfully reckless of you.” Duan Ling hurriedly apologises to the guests.
Wu Du is already dragging him to a private room though. “It all belongs to your family anyway — the boat too. What are you being so polite to them for?”
Duan Ling is speechless.
Soon everything has calmed down in the pavilion once more, and all is peaceful. Someone is playing the qin beneath them on the first floor, and a waiter brings them warmed wine and food. And so Wu Du wraps an arm around Duan Ling and drinks wine, reclining on a daybed behind the screen. They nestle against each other under a blanket, enjoying the scenery, and it really is a delightful thing to do.
“Do you want me to sing for you, milord?” Duan Ling says smilingly.
Wu Du is a little bit tipsy. He hooks Duan Ling under the chin with a finger to draw him closer and wraps his arms around him as though he’s worried someone might take him away.
“Shan’er, you’ve grown,” Wu Du says.
The tenderest part of Duan Ling’s heart feels a twinge with those words. When he recalls how things were when Wu Du brought him back home with him, everything really has changed.
“You’re always treating me like a kid.” Duan Ling leans back against Wu Du, facing the whirling snow falling over Lake Wangguang.
Wu Du puts his arms around Duan Ling from behind, his wine-scented lips rubbing back and forth over the shell of Duan Ling’s ear, whispering, “I don’t want you to grow up. That way I won’t keep getting old either.”
Duan Ling grabs Wu Du’s wrist and turns so they’re face to face, leaning into his embrace, tilting his head to kiss his lips. Wu Du takes a mouthful of wine and feeds it to him, mouth to mouth. As the temperature between them climbs amorously, the floating pavilion slowly draws close to shore. Some of the guests disembark while others board from the pier.
Yao Zheng’s voice reaches them from beyond the screen. “Now that it’s winter, hardly anyone comes to these floating pavilions anymore.”
“This way please,” the waiter’s voice says.
Duan Ling tries to move away, but Wu Du refuses to let him go; with his arms around him, he keeps kissing him as though he hasn’t had enough.
“Ignore them,” Wu Du’s lips move imperceptibly as he whispers.
Lang Junxia closes the umbrella and steps into the pavilion with Yao Zheng. Yao Zheng gives her surroundings a casual glance before saying, “Over here is fine.”
Yao Zheng and Lang Junxia had chosen a private room on the first floor that faces the lake, and it just so happens to be the one right below Wu Du and Duan Ling. Lang Junxia rests one leg on the railing and leans out at the water, saying absentmindedly, “This may be the last time I ever come to Lake Wanguang.”
Duan Ling and Wu Du are also leaning against the railing, listening to the conversation taking place below.
“What are you saying?” Yao Zheng says, “Uncle won’t do anything to you.”
Lang Junxia doesn’t answer. Finally, Yao Zheng continues, “Just stay in Huaiyin. I’ll ask daddy to intercede on your behalf. When you’re here, no one can hurt you.”
“I appreciate your kindness,” Lang Junxia’s voice reaches them from below. “But I have unfinished business in Jiangzhou. It’s predestined that I must face it.”
Yao Zheng’s voice is adding, “Once that’s done, can’t you come back here?”
Lang Junxia replies, “Every step after the first misstep had gone on the wrong path. There is no other option left for me to take.”
“You’ve done nothing wrong. The way I see it, isn’t my cousin alive and well? If you hadn’t …”
“Let it be,” Lang Junxia says.
And so Yao Zheng speaks no more of it. But then she adds, “When you came to Huaiyin four years ago, what was the news that you brought anyway?”
“His Majesty sent me back to Xichuan. He wanted me to figure out what Zhao Kui and Mu Kuangda had planned, and that if I needed to I could join the other side, lie low and wait for his command. In the blink of an eye, it’s already been four years.”
“I still remember when you came to Huaiyin four years ago. You were fine, and you weren’t missing your finger. By the time I saw you in Xichuan again you’ve changed.”
“I haven’t changed,” Lang Junxia says, his voice steady without a ripple, “throughout all these years, what’s in my heart remains the same.”
“I’m sorry,” Yao Zheng says suddenly.
A flabbergasted look comes over Wu Du’s face on the second floor as if he can’t believe Yao Zheng would apologise to anyone of her own volition. Duan Ling looks at him with a questioning look in his eyes, and Wu Du shakes his head, letting him know he’ll tell him later.
“It’s all in the past,” Lang Junxia says with a smile. “Let’s not speak of it.”
“If I wasn’t mad at you that day, I wouldn’t have …”
“It was meant to be,” Lang Junxia replies. “Aren’t you getting married yet?”
“Marry, marry, everyone is rushing me to marry.” Yao Zheng’s expression darkens and she gets in a huff. “It’s none of your business!”
Lang Junxia doesn’t press her again, but Yao Zhen seems no longer interested in staying. It’s not long before she rises to go. Lang Junxia thus gets up as well and follows her.
Duan Ling peers out at them. Surprisingly, Lang Junxia and Yao Zheng have left as quickly as they came. On the shore, Yao Zheng gets on her horse, and ignoring Lang Junxia, departs on her own. Lang Junxia stands by the side of the road for a little while, but he doesn’t mount his horse. He holds the reins and slowly walks away from the pier.
One man, one horse; Duan Ling stares at them from his perch behind the railing, and the scene fills him with a sense of ineffable sadness.
“Wu Du?”
“It’s nothing.” Wu Du shakes his head, as though immersed in his memories.
“Do Yao Zheng and Lang Junxia know each other?” Duan Ling is rather surprised. Wu Du doesn’t really know either, but from listening to their conversation, they seem to have seen each other before. It was probably back when his father sent Lang Junxia south to make inquiries.
“It’s getting late. Let’s head back,” Wu Du says.
The two depart the floating pavilion for the Yao estate. Along the way, Duan Ling thinks of that spring he parted from Lang Junxia. His father came, and Lang Junxia left; everything had seemed so right, a foregone conclusion. He never imagined that once they parted they would become strangers.
At nightfall, to Duan Ling’s surprise, the only person who comes to dinner is Li Yanqiu.
From his perspective, since he’s already met the Yaos, it doesn’t really matter whether or not they spend more time together. At dinner time it’s just the two of them sitting across from each other, with Wu Du standing on guard outside while Zheng Yan is off somewhere.
The dishes are spread out on the table, and Duan Ling tastes the food for Li Yanqiu. Li Yanqiu takes a sip of tea and tells him, “Don’t worry about all those rules. Just eat.”
Duan Ling was the one who tasted all of Li Yanqiu’s food for him when he was staying in Ye. With Wu Du around, even if he does get poisoned it probably won’t pose too much of a problem, but he insists on trying each dish anyway before going back to his own seat. “Uncle, I really do have to head back. One must finish what one starts. Since I went to Ye, then I ought to do a good job. That’s the only way I won’t be letting my dad down.”
“Alright then. I’m not going to stop you. But when you’re back in Ye you need to be even more careful than before.”
Duan Ling lets out a sigh of relief, and he plans to leave by tomorrow. There are plenty of things for him to do in Jiangzhou after all, and Li Yanqiu can’t possibly stay in Huaiyin forever. If they set off for their respective destinations as soon as possible, that should give them ample time to prepare.
“The reason why I asked only you to join me for dinner today,” Li Yanqiu says, after pausing to think, “is because there are some things I must explain to you.”
Duan Ling hums an affirmative. This is the night before they part formally, so Li Yanqiu must have instructions for him.
And indeed, the first thing Li Yanqiu tells him is, “The one who conspired to kill your dad was likely to be someone in Great Chen.”
Duan Ling is shaken, and he can’t stop trembling. He asks with a quiver in his voice, “How did you find that out?”
“Neither you nor I witnessed the events of the time firsthand. You were in Shangjing, and I was in Xichuan. But according to what Wu Du and Wuluohou Mu told me, the story basically fits. Wu Du once told me that you killed someone in Tongguan with your own two hands whose name was Helan Jie.”
“Right!” Duan Ling shivers uncontrollably, his blood seemingly chilled. He can’t eat anymore, and with shaking hands sets his chopsticks down.
Li Yanqiu continues, “Helan Jie used to be an assassin of Xiyu, once an exiled disciple of the Yulin Sword School. Do you remember last winter, when a bunch of Mongolian envoys came to celebrate your birthday? One of those people was named Khatanbaatar.”
“I remember.”
“His master was Nayantuo. Before he died, Nayantuo banished Helan Jie. He no longer had a footing in Xiyu, and eventually ended up in Liao. It was extremely likely that he sought asylum in the Southern Administration. That night, when your dad marched to Shangjing, he was first attacked by assassins just before they reached a valley. Wu Du said that judging by the skills of the assassins we met the other day, they likely belonged to the very same group.”
This is the one thing Duan Ling hasn’t been able to figure out even though he’s been thinking about it all the way to Huaiyin. If Mu Kuangda had sent Chang Liujun to kill Li Yanqiu, then where was he keeping his men? And where could they have been hiding?
And now, everything makes sense.
Mu Kuangda is colluding with the Southern Administration’s Han Weiyong! The assassins had been in Liao the whole time, and back then, Helan Jie had also taken these same people and killed his father!
“Those assassins …” Duan Ling is stunned.
“They were from the Yulin Sword School. Khatanbaatar took away some of them, and command over the others was taken by Helan Jie. Wuluohou Mu said that he once gave you a string of Buddhist prayer beads. Is that true?”
“It’s in Ye.” Duan Ling doesn’t carry them around with him.
“That would be Nayantuo’s personal token before he died — the Yulin sandalwood beads. Disciples of the Yulin Sword School need to heed the commands of whoever holds the beads. Helan Jie killed your dad, so to take revenge for him, Wuluohou Mu chopped off his hand and took the Buddhist prayer beads from him.”

It is worth saving them
───✱*.。:。✱*.:。✧*.。✰*.:。✧*.。:。*.。✱ ───
A grey-striped cat slowly turned the corner of the Redoran Canton. It looked up at the floating moon above Vivec, Baar Dau.
Altough it was odd, the cat spoke in quite a humanoid way.
"Isn't it sad, Haskill?"
An answer ringed in his ears, "It is tragic, My Lord."
"An era long process to build a city... wasted. Soon to be destroyed," he sighed.
The cat quickly shut up once they saw a guard. It quickly walked past the guard once they faced away.
"Is it truly necessary to be... skooma cat?" Haskill asked.
"Everyone would either scream or cry. Maybe some even out of happiness. No! No. Vivec shouldn't have the slightest idea of what is going to happen. They will try to stop anyone from leaving."
Skooma cat found some stairs to the lower levels of the Redoran Canton and zipped down. Only to see that both bridges had broken down.
Two dunmer women walked by and made cat noises at Skooma cat who walked over to the edge of the broken bridge.
"Aw, kitty! What are you doi-"
Suddenly it jumped of to the shock of the two women. Can cats even swim?
Luckily he fell directly on a small bamboo boat. A young boy was steering the boat.
"Oh! Hello! A client! Where did you come from, kitty?"
"Meow?"
"Where do you want to go?"
Skooma cat sat down and started to lick his paw.
"Did you want to go across the bridge? Wait, I'll help you."
The boy pushed the boat off the side of the Redoran Canton so that the cat could reach the other side.
Skooma cat slowly reached their head to their little jacket and grabbed a small gold coin. He quickly put it down in front of the boy before jumping up on the railing.
"Oh! Thank you, sir cat!"
It took a little time but Skooma cat was finally in the sewers.
The sewers stank severely and on top were dark but it didn't bother Skooma cat that much. At least not the darkness. The smell? That did bother him. That was why he was moving a little bit faster.
Then he took a turn after walking past some rats which he hissed at and there it was. His statue and... most importantly to him... his worshippers. He slowly stepped into the light and sat down. His little tail wrapped around his side.
It didn't take long for him to get noticed and he waited patiently until he got everyone's attention.
"Good morning, my dear mortals."
Some of them immediately lowered themselves. One stood out. A dunmer woman in her thirties at most.
"Lord Sheogorath? We didn't expect you to-"
He sighed, "My dear mortals, you have to leave."
"But, Sire! We just made you an offering," she stammered.
"You have to flee Vvardenfell. Get to the main land. Baar Dau will fall this year and I do not know when. Tell your families and fellow worshippers. Perhaps some close friends, but nobody else! You will all end up as bloody mush if you do not leave right now! I can not help you but I will try. Do not try to make me any offerings during your escape," his voice was unwavering and cold.
"But Lord Sheogo-"
"Vvardenfell will burn!"
The worshippers all looked at each other shocked and then started to pack up.
Sheogorath or in this case Skooma cat himself supervised them for a while. One of the older worshippers decided to pick Skooma cat up and carried them while all of them moved in a group to start getting their families.
To his delight he even got some good scritches.
His worshippers swiftly but carefully collected their family members and closest friends to leave Vvardenfell the only place that they have ever known under the guiding hand of their Lord, Sheogorath. They hid behind corners and whispered to not be seen by the guards patrolling. If it truly came to violence... Skooma cat would protect them to the bitter end. Even if he lost all of his energy that way. His energy was already dwindeling due to him being on Nirn, but he simply didn't care.
The older worshipper put Skooma cat down after reaching the edge of Vivec.
Skooma cat purred, "I will soon see you again, my dear mortals. Do not hesitate to call out my name."
A little girl came along. The daughter of the dunmer woman. She bowed, "Thank you, Lord Sheogorath." which truly touched Sheogorath's heart.
All of them said their goodbyes to their Lord as he vanished through a portal with a purple tint to it.
The Daedric Prince slowly came to a stop after he recognized the shoes and the pants on the person standing right in front of him. He very sluggishly looked up at his servant who immediately picked him up after he made eye contact. Skooma cat mrrrped out of shock.
Haskill gently held him in his arms and gave him some good pets and scritches which made him purr.

Chapter 13
Mei and her classmates are all dressed up in yutakas. Mei’s classmate (Noa) asks her to turn back and look in her direction. When Mei does, a picture is taken of her. Noa then exclaims that Mei looks really adorable, and the others suggest that Mei should send the picture of herself to the person she likes. We then see the reason for them to be dressed up - they are in Kyoto (which is Mei’s hometown).
Noa asks Mei about what developments have happened between Mei and Iori. Mei replies with a blush that she and Iori have started dating. This surprises her classmates greatly and they get very excited - “Eh? What?!” “Tell us more details!!” “Kyaa! It must be so sweet now since you just started dating <3”
Mei, with a pained smile, answers that it’s not much. She then gives us a recap of the events one week prior.
Iori asks, “A school trip?”. Mei answers yes (Asahina chimes in that he’s going as well), that she will be going to Kyoto for 4 days and 3 nights. Kanon comments excitedly, “Isn’t Kyoto Mei-chan’s hometown? That’s great~ It sounds really fun! (Please buy us souvenirs- <3)”.
However, Mei looks anxious and says that she is worried. She asks, “Iori-sensei, do you know how to use the microwave?”
Iori replies, “What do you take me for?”. He then says that it’s not a problem and she doesn’t need to be so concerned about him. Kanon adds that she will still be around to accompany Iori too.
Asahina laughs in response to Kanon, saying, “Eh, isn’t that what’s most worrying?”. While Kanon goes “Hah?” and glares at Asahina, he disregards her response and tells Iori, “Ah, Iori-sensei. You can leave Mei-chan to me. We’re going to be in the same group, so we’ll always be together <3”.
Iori simply stares blankly back at Asahina, going, “Ah, I see.” Asahina laughingly remarks that Iori is as cold and indifferent as usual, then turns to Mei to say that he’s really excited about the trip. Mei awkwardly agrees.
Mei thinks to herself while glancing at Iori that she has been staying with him for a year, but this is the first time they need to be apart for so long. She sadly wonders if she is the only one feeling lonely.
Going back to the present, Mei's classmates (Noa, Tsumugi and Chiharu) excitedly point out Arashiyama (the mountain) and the Togetsukyou (a bridge in Kyoto). However, Mei seems to be leaning over the side of the bridge. Chiharu yells, “Mei?! Don’t jump over!!”
Mei then reassures Chiharu, saying that she was just looking at her phone. Mei then glances at her phone once more - she’s looking at her text to Iori, which says “I’m off! Don’t hesitate to contact me if anything comes up.”, but Iori has left her on read without replying. Mei sadly thinks that Iori isn’t contacting her.
Mei then starts worrying if Iori properly got up in the morning, whether he’s eating well, whether he remembered to feed Soseki, etc. Someone goes up to Mei and remarks, “That’s enough– you’re looking at your phone again.” and takes Mei’s phone away from her.
Mei turns to look at who it is - it’s Asahina. He’s also all dressed up in a yukata, but with a hat and face mask. He says that he’ll be confiscating her phone.
Asahina asks Mei if she’s been waiting for Iori to contact her, and Mei guiltily answers yes. He tells her to raise her head and look ahead. He says, “There’s such beautiful scenery before you. This school trip is such a rare opportunity, so you should properly enjoy yourself!”
Mei suddenly looks inspired. She thinks to herself, ‘Indeed, I have always been like this, looking down whenever I was worried about something. This also means that I must have missed out on those happy moments…’
Mei looks cheered up and she thanks Asahina. She then resolves to fully enjoy her trip - they go to the Arashiyama bamboo grove, ride a pulled rickshaw and eat ice cream.
Mei gets ice cream on her cheek. Asahina goes up to her, wipes off the ice cream with his finger and then licks his finger clean while telling her that she has ice cream on her face. This move is witnessed by Mei’s classmates and they freak out, blushing wildly. However, Mei simply smiles and thanks Asahina, not seeming to notice anything.
Chiharu and Tsumugi are impressed by how unfazed Mei is towards Asahina’s suave moves. Tsumugi comments that if it were her in Mei’s place, she would have blushed and nosebleed-ed to death. We see Asahina huff in disappointment.
Noa goes up to Asahina and giggles, saying that Asahina was rejected, as his moves didn’t work on Mei. She asks, “Sora-kun, you like Mei-mei, don’t you? What a painful one-sided love!”
Asahina responds, “I wouldn’t say that I like her. (I just find her reactions interesting.)”.
This shocks Noa. Asahina continues, saying with a smile, “Because, isn’t being in love really lame?”
“It’s so dumb, being led by the nose over someone else’s feelings. In the end, people only care about themselves.”
Noa is freaked out by Asahina’s response and runs away, exclaiming that Mei needs to escape from him - as he is a bad person.
Something vibrates in Asahina’s sleeves - he realizes that it’s Mei’s phone - Iori is calling her. Asahina goes, “...Heh–”, and answers the phone with a high-pitched voice (probably to imitate Mei), “Hello, Iori-sensei? What’s wrong?”
Iori instantly recognizes Asahina’s voice and goes, “......Asahina? Why are you holding onto Mei’s phone…”
Asahina answers, “Mei-chan is really busy now, so she asked me to answer the phone for her. Want me to call for her?”. (Meanwhile, we see Noa going up to Mei and asking Mei if she’s alright. Mei is just smiling at her, going ‘Eh? What?’)
Iori replies, “--No, it’s fine.” Asahina then says, “Anyway, calling your girlfriend while she’s on a school trip; Iori-sensei, aren’t you being too overbearing?”
“Don’t you worry, Mei-chan is having LOTS of fun here.”
Asahina then hangs up. He cheerfully says to himself, “If their relationship will be broken just like this, then that’s just too bad~”. He also deletes the call log.
Later that evening, Asahina approaches Mei to return her phone to her. Mei looks surprised and thanks him, saying that she had totally forgotten about her phone. Mei contentedly thinks to herself that this means she has been enjoying her trip to the fullest.
Asahina then asks Mei, “Mei-chan, do you want to try giving Iori-sensei a call?”. Mei blushes in response and goes, “Eh… Bu-but…”
Asahina tells her that Kanon went out today, so since Iori is alone at home, he might be feeling lonely.
We then see Mei sitting at a bench with her phone. She thinks to herself that she hesitated for 2 whole hours and it’s getting late (her classmates may worry and their teacher may get mad). She decides to cast away all her hesitations and presses “Call” on her phone. While the call is connecting, Mei is trembling with nervousness.
Iori picks up the phone - it’s a video call - and we see that he’s fresh out of the bath. He asks, “--What’s up?”
Mei immediately blushes and gets flustered upon seeing Iori through video call and doesn’t answer. Iori asks her what she’s doing, and Mei replies that she’s taking a screenshot (Iori tells her to stop).
Mei then asks Iori if he’s alright, to which Iori says, “I guess so. It’s only been a day, so nothing would change.”
Mei simply looks at Iori through the phone, thinking to herself, ‘It’s Iori-sensei–’ without replying. Iori then asks, “...Aren’t you very busy?”
Mei goes, “Eh? No! Not at all…”, however her classmates (Noa and Tsumugi) suddenly appear and call out to Mei, asking if she wants to join them to play poker cards. Tsumugi tries to shush Noa as she can tell that Mei is talking to her boyfriend.
Mei replies to Noa and Tsumugi, saying, “Ah! I’m sorry, I’ll go over later!”, but Iori tells Mei that she should quickly return to her room. He adds, “I also still have work. I’m hanging up.”
The call ends before Mei can say anything, and she gets upset. She thinks to herself that it’s unavoidable since he has work, but… (she doesn’t finish her thought, but we see her recalling Iori’s seemingly indifferent response “Ah, I see.”)
Asahina suddenly appears and asks Mei if she’s alright. He goes to sit down next to Mei and says that he heard everything. He adds, “If you’re fine with it, why don’t you talk to me about it?”
Mei pauses for a moment, then says, “...I thought, we’ve only been apart for one day, yet am I the only one who feels so lonely…?”
Mei begins to weep. Asahina goes, “Mei-chan…” and smirks to himself, taking the chance to put his arm around Mei to comfort her. However, upon seeing her crying face, he stops himself.
Asahina says to Mei, “That’s not the case!”
“Iori-sensei has always been a workaholic, right? It’s just that your timings aren’t aligned!”
Mei seems somewhat comforted at Asahina’s words. He then gets up and says that they need to wake up early tomorrow, so she should forget about this and go to sleep.
Mei smiles weakly and thanks Asahina for listening to her. While watching Mei walk away, Asahina looks downcast and asks himself what he’s doing.
The next day, Asahina looks very tired. Mei worriedly asks if he’s alright and he answers that he didn’t get to sleep well. While Mei worries about him, she notices some girls from other schools talking among themselves, “...That, that person!” “Is it him?! It’s him, right?!”
The girls have realized aloud that Asahina Sora is present. This causes a stir among the other people around - they go, “Eh? For real? In person?!” “Where, where?!” “I stan him so much <3”
Noa starts panicking and Asahina sleepily says that he should return to the hotel to sleep.
However, someone grabs his wrist - it’s Mei, who says, “That’s no good, Sora-kun! This school trip is a rare opportunity, right?!”
Before Asahina can react, Mei has taken his hand and tugs him along, going, “This way!!”. Meanwhile, Asahina’s fans are all giving chase.
We see Mei and Asahina in various situations, evading all the fans - hiding in a corner, giving wrong directions about where Asahina went, camouflaging as statues etc. Mei thinks to herself that enjoying their school trip is something important that Asahina taught to her, so she wants to help him defend it.
Later, the two of them reach a riverside and Mei is panting with leaves in her hair. She says that it should be fine since they’ve come all the way here. Asahina puts his hand to his mouth and goes, “Pfft…” and Mei exclaims, “Sora-kun?! Are you alright…”
Asahina bursts out laughing. While Mei looks at him confusedly, Asahina continues laughing and says, “Sor…sorry. I never thought that I’d dash around madly and play hide-and-seek in the heart of Kyoto!”
Laughing with a huge smile on his face, Asahina says, “It was super fun!”
Mei looks at him, and comments, “...So Sora-kun can also smile like that.”
When Asahina goes, “Eh…”, Mei continues, saying, “All this time, haven’t you been smiling with your picture-perfect smiles? Ah, of course those are good, too!!”
Smiling brightly, Mei says, “I just think that when you don’t hold back, it looks really nice!”
Asahina looks taken with Mei. He then leans towards Mei, telling her that she has a leaf in her hair.
Mei gets flustered, going, “Eh?! Where, where?!”
Removing the leaf from Mei’s hair, Asahina leans in close to Mei and says, locking eyes, “...What I think is that, compared to me, Mei-chan’s smiles are the loveliest.”
Mei looks dazed and remains speechless. We then see that Mei’s classmates have caught up to them, and they ask if Mei and Asahina are alright. Asahina replies, “Yep! (Thanks!)”, while Noa asks Mei if anything has happened.
Noa remarks to Mei, “Your face is so red!”, and we see Mei blushing, with a troubled expression on her face.

Latest Interior Design Trends in 2024
1.Embracing the warmth of Earthy Brown Tones
Brown will dominate interior design trends in 2024, creating a sense of warmth and coziness in homes. Brown is the go-to color for creating inviting rooms, with chocolate hues, rich terracottas, deep oranges as well as earthy brown tones. To achieve a classic and classy design, include brown throughout your furniture, decor, and accent walls.

2.Sustainable Materials
Climate change has a significant impact on winters, which arrive later and become colder each year. The pandemic years saw an increase in farmhouse bookings as people sought refuge from urban pollutants and overcrowding. While that may be out of reach for many, taking steps towards a more sustainable future is possible, and it aligns with our 2024 design trends.
Choose sustainable options such as reclaimed wood, bamboo, recycled glass, or water-saving sinks—a significant step towards sustainability. This modern living area features a remarkable floor-to-ceiling bamboo divider that is both unique and sustainable, adding character to the space.
3.Nature Indoors
Biophilic design is in trend. It aims to strengthen our bond with nature. This trend, which includes components like as green accent walls, indoor plants, and well-ventilated areas, is not just for aesthetic reasons, but also for our well-being. Indoor plants planted strategically enhance the atmosphere and provide a revitalizing vibe.
This trendy kitchen features natural wood cabinetry, beautiful marble worktops, and eco-friendly rattan chairs. Don’t underestimate the kitchen’s potential for an herb garden, which is ideal for organic cooking. Consider installing a skylight, especially if you’re surrounded by towering trees, to add a natural touch and strengthen your connection to the outdoors.
4.Smart Automation: The Future of Efficiency
This year’s interior design trends focus on making our living spaces more modern and futuristic. Imagine effortlessly integrating smart, efficient, and energy-saving lighting technology that is not only revolutionary but also ‘cool’ in your house.
Whether it’s turning on lights with a clap, using voice assistants like Alexa, or customizing settings via your smartphone, these tech-savvy solutions are more than convenient; they’re the height of modern living. Being tech-savvy isn’t simply practical; it’s also stylish!
5.Silver Accents add Glamour
We believe silver will take the lead in 2024 because it is powerful, timeless, and adaptable, and it bridges the gap between tradition and modernity.
Say goodbye to gold; silver is the preferred metal for home design trends in 2024. From light fixtures to hardware, silver elements add a sense of elegance and sophistication to your home. Mix and combine silver with other textures and colors to create a striking visual impact that will boost your home design.
Make a strong impression with this silver decorative mirror. The silver decorations instantly give a touch of luxury to any area, while the mirror itself increases the sense of space and light. This piece is both practical and visually appealing, making it a must-have for your house.

A bit of a 'kin diary entry CW for drug use
While I had been planning on it for a while, I finally ran my first round of shrooms since they were decriminalized here. It's part of a deeper experiment to make it so I'm forever mental shifted, and some permanent phantom shifts mixed in might be nice. One of the goals this past Saturday that I decided on was also trying to push a past life regression. I continued to fail to get concrete kin memories. I was, to some extent, willing to accept the possibility of it being purely psychological, and to some degree, I don't have strong evidence against that possibility even now but either way: I succeeded. I found myself walking two lands in the sky in a sort of waking dream. It's entirely possible they were ultimately both part of the same kingdom. The first vision I walked along solid pathways laden with pearl and gold, and pink fog covered the area. I even saw one end of an airship docked along the pathway. Of course, I felt something was... off. But maybe not. Importantly, though, I wanted to see a part of this home where I could see the sky. And so, the vision shifted, and now I could see sky above and sky below as I walked wood and rope bridges around a small floating village. There were enchanted platforms that held buildings aloft in the sky. Now that I had seen home, the next question came: what did I do here? Who was I? What was I capable of? I held my hands out in front of me looking at the sky, and as I traced the sky, clouds and lightning followed the tips of my claws. Well, clearly I had reached a potent mastery of magic, so where did that put me in this skyborne society? Was I simply a powerful mage and artist? Some sort of ruler? A demigod? As I pondered these questions, the vision shifted. I now sat upon a throne of wood, made of woven together logs that looked like dark brown bamboo. Ivy and flowers were woven within the throne, and above me was a woven overhang made of woven wooden lattice, and the bridges extended from the platform I was on out into the blue. On my right was an ovular island with an airship docked on it. Overall the court and throne were out in the open air where I could feel the breeze and seethe sky all around me. I looked down at my hands, and I wore fine silken gloves around my forearm and 3 rings on my left hand. I could better see the cloudy fur on my hand now as well. The answer seemed to be clear: I had become a queen in this nation, and it was a place that felt incredibly positive, as if I was well loved. By then I was sobering up enough that further exploration was somewhat difficult, but this throne room had also become my new mindspace, and I had to spend the next while assigning those dear to me to roles in the courtroom to reaffirm my attachments to them. I may consider exploring further in the near future, because there's other parts of my nature that aren't properly answered in just being a queen. Needless to say, I'd never been so immersed before in my non-humanity, how vividly I could feel my tail, horns, fur, claws, muzzle. How vividly I felt my tail raise and tense up as my room mate teased me while immersed. How much all of my anxieties and fears about how I interact with this world faded away to be replaced by the sheer confidence of one who had earned her place on that throne. Furthermore, I can now seem to bring myself into shifts with just a moment of thought, which before it took deep meditations to do so. And as well, the musical synesthesia is quite interesting as the shrooms kick in. Everyone else described seeing colors, but at first I didn't, but as time when the colors when I closed my eyes began to reshape into patterns until finally the visions began appearing where I was walking among the clouds on the pearl pathways. Overall, definitely recommend such an experience. The shrooms otherwise had some of the intended results: Remove more of my human nature in favor of my kin nature, which even this first trip almost deleted my germaphobia. A few more trips and I anticipate I may yet have cured some of my chronic illnesses that have plagued me.

It's early evening on a Friday and I call you.
Tumblr media
It's early evening on a Friday, you've wrapped up work, and I call you out of nowhere. I tell you to pack a bag for the weekend, take your car keys and meet me downstairs in half an hour.
We drive out, talking about how the work went this week. Soon, we're like a line of red paint flowing out of the canvas of this city, the hazy orange of the sky mixing with the bright blue & yellow lights of the street beneath.
Within an hour, it's already getting dark on the highway, and we're seeing fewer and fewer buildings with every mile we pass.
Concrete skyscrapers turn into dingy structures, made like children's clay castles, and the catterpillar of lights at a distance across the lake bridge glows dimmer and dimmer still.
We stop at a food court before midnight. I step out of the car to take in a deep breath of the clean highway air. It tastes like a spray of wild grass mixed with mild fragrant water. There is a hint of fresh cow dung, too, but I don't mind.
I feed you hot pav bhaji with my hands and you feed me my dosa with yours. You're smiling at the baby across our table, and I'm smiling at your smile.
We continue for another hour till we reach the resort I booked for us, an arching wide structure which glows like a pot of honey in the dark of the night. The clean reception is chiming with sounds of crickets and grasshoppers.
We take our bags upstairs and melt into the soft white fabric of the bed. You don't notice it but I'm trying to touch your hand, wanting to be guided by its meandering as you glide it around the sheets, fading into sleep.
I'm awake before you, like always, and nudge you for the buffet breakfast, my favourite part about staying anywhere.
We spend the day just walking around the place, talking about everything that brings us joy. I'm horrible at clicking your pictures and you know it, but we click a million anyway.
I'm uncomfortable admitting this but I'm starting to like us. I'm starting to like how I find happiness in our simplicity. In simply pending time with you not conquering the world, learning new things, or creating anything spectacular or valuable.
I'm uncomfortable of how I'm finding meaning in a person's company in and by itself without a product, expectation or outcome attached to the time we give to each other.
I'm scared that all my life I've wanted everything to be grand and fast but you make connecting with someone feel as important.
You don't even realise that it's already late night but I surprise you with a candle light dinner at the corner of the quiet restaurant, right next to the open forest and hills.
You trace the borders of the haunted ranges glowing against the emerald sky, hiding small bamboo and stone homes on their fingertips. There is a temple at the distance. Your photos are blurry and full of flash but so is my state of mind.
The next day we drive back after a late breakfast, stopping at the famous vineyard en route to click more photos and grab a bite.
It's raining as we enter the city and the traffic is uneasily clogging up, so we stop for tea and some respite.
You drop me home and ask me to text you for night once I freshen up.
It's back to work tomorrow and there's so much lined up but I haven't thought about it for one moment all this while. Did you?
As I unpack, my mind is engrossed in mental checklists, plans and strategies to get through.
But there is a feverish trickle of mixed emotions in the caves of my heart, the feeling you get when you say goodbye to your special or favourite person after spending a good day with them and then they have to go back home.
You kinda want them to stay but you're also exhausted of them ... in a good way.
I wanted you to know that you've become a meditation for me. A little but mindful pause in my noisy world. A world away from everything. A highway that's mine to explore. A road that takes me away and drops me right back at home.
And I'll find you again.
