CA: TWS parallels got me in my feels, too. Peggy/Nat is THE SHIP for me, but there's something about Peggy/Steve that hits just right the same way as Tony/Pepper, Steve/Tony, and Steve/Bucky.

The framing of these shots got me--Peggy in the background pissed because she wasn't told about the rumors of the Hydra Stomper, while Nat (listening) definitely knew about Steve:

This ep got me in the feels, all of them.

But then! OOOO, this Fury! AND FINALLY, WANDA!!!!!

Overall: similar in ep 4 in that it was close to the emotional impact of Stephen's ep in the first season but still missed the mark (and tbh the Tony ep hit harder, but more because of Tony's characterization--Peggy is fairly consistent, Tony is not, so getting him so right (for me) was incredible). I adore this ep, I love Peggy, I love Nat, I enjoy this universe, and I hope we visit their universe again (if not, there's always fanfic, my beloved).

I know this is something popular but not super written about. Would you please consider doing a drabble of Dean finally opening up about how bad John was and Cas absolutely destroying that man? I feel like I could really use some protective bamf Cas right now.

"so yeah. dad." dean laughs uncomfortably and takes another sip of his whiskey. "i mean, what can you say?"

castiel could say quite a lot, but he chooses to keep silent. time means little and less to angels, he can float through decades like humans flip through photo albums. he already knows all about john winchester. what matters is that dean knows.

"he was a good dad. he tried. i mean." dean's expression twists.

"it's okay," Castiel begins. allowing dean to leave the shadow of his father has been like sucking poison from a wound. even now, almost fifteen years after his death, castiel can still see the remnants of john winchester pressed on dean, like bruises on clear skin.

"he was never there," dean explodes. "he left me and sam to figure things out--he left me to figure things out. i was the one who had to do everything for sam, who had to raise sam."

dean continues. like a stone rolling down a hill, he can't be stopped. "and if i pissed him off... it was so fucking lucky that i was already good at lying to cover up my hunting injuries. the bruises, the cuts? if anyone guessed the truth, they would have taken us away. i would have lost sam." the bleakness in dean's voice isn't that of a man over the crest of forty. it's the fear of a child, clinging to what they know. castiel's heart aches.

"and when we didn't have any money... after the first time i got caught and sent to sonny's, I knew I couldn't steal anymore. so. so i found ways to make money."

Dean stares down at the floor. his voice is tiny when he says "you were the first. i mean. the first guy that i was with that ever... you were my first that meant something."

castiel can't hold himself back any longer. he reaches out and takes dean's hands in his. dean's knuckles are large--the result of a hard life and injuries. his palms and fingertips are calloused. he's rough. imperfect.

castiel loves him more than he thought was ever possible. his love could shake the earth from its axis.

"dean." castiel's thumb strokes over dean's knuckles. "perfect, wonderful man. you never have to apologize to me for anything."

dean breathes a small sigh that stutters in his throat as castiel says, his voice hard, "your father on the other hand. your father would have to apologize for much."

"what--"

"john winchester was a man who took two of the greatest treasures given to him--you and your brother--and threw them away. he was never a true father, not in the ways that mattered. he was a coward when it came to confronting his loss, and he chose to retreat into hunting rather than raise his two sons."

castiel raises dean's knuckles to his lips. Dean's hands are slack, but he doesn't pull them from castiel's.

"your father never deserved you. he was a weak, cruel man, and the fact that you are the way that you are, is a credit to your resilience, and not to him. i'm sorry that you never had someone to love you like you deserved when you were younger. i'm sorry that you walked those paths alone. I wish i could have been there with you."

"doesn't matter," dean says, his voice thick and choked. "you came when it mattered."

"as I will always do," castiel says, kissing dean's knuckles in benediction. "i strive every day to be worthy of your love."

Dean's snort breaks the spell between them. "be worthy of... for fuck's sake, cas. you saved the world, like. a billion and a half times. I feel like that entitles you to whatever snuggles you want."

"well, one never wants to presume," castiel says primly, his dignity is robbed, however, when dean lunges forward and pushes him back against the couch.

"well, I presume," dean says, lowering his head so that his lips brush against castiel's as he speaks. "and i think that you've earned my love and a little bit besides."

castiel's laugh is lost in dean's kiss.

Another price for my 2k followers game! (finally lmao) This one’s for @thevorpalsword who asked for witch!Cas and familiar!Dean, feat. their awesome teamwork and Dean getting hurt, with Cas going all BAMF and protective. Also connected to this prompt fill that I posed earlier today.

Castiel prefers to work white magic. Healing potions, luck charms, spells that help rather than harm.

Despite this preference, his natural ability lies elsewhere. No one can work an exorcism faster than him, can pinpoint a monster with as much accuracy from as great a distance. There’s a reason that Dean, his familiar, is a wolf with jaws capable of snapping bones in half and teeth made to tear through flesh.

They don’t go out looking for kills often, preferring to be on the defensive, but every month around the full moon Dean gets antsy and Castiel’s magic grows aggressive.

That’s when they hunt.

The pray this time around is a group of demons that have been wreaking havoc in a nearby village. Most homes are warded against them but they’ve snatched a few unlucky souls from the streets, leaving the corpses at the doorsteps of their families some days later.

Castiel locates them easily. Too easily, as it turns out when they arrive at the demons’ hideaway. There’s easily a dozen of them there, and even though Dean and Castiel are a formidable team it’s a lot to handle.

A couple of demons attempt to tackle Castiel as soon as he’s through the door, but the charm around his neck repels them automatically, giving Castiel time to perform a quick exorcism. The demons fly from their hosts and Dean snatches them midair, tearing through the smoke as if it were solid and rendering it to pieces.

The rest attack all at once, and Castiel can no longer keep track. He rattles off exorcisms, fending the demons off with a silver blade and trusting that Dean will take care of those he can’t catch.

An agonized howl cuts through the chaos and Castiel swivels his head just in time to see Dean fall to the ground with a knife lodged in his thigh. A demon is on him in a second but Castiel raises his hand, an overwhelming burst of anger powering him to blast the demon through the wall, leaving an unconscious vessel and a black shadow on the wall from the demon’s obliteration.

The others scatter after that and if Castiel were any kind of proper witch he would chase them, but instead he rushes to Dean’s side. With a labored breath Dean shifts in his arms, the wolf form presumably too taxing to maintain with this kind of injury.

“Stay still,” Castiel orders softly.

“Sorry,” Dean says, flinching when Castiel grips the knife. “I should’ve seen him comin’, I couldn’t-”

Castiel shakes his head. “You did well, Dean. We weren’t prepared for those numbers, I should have researched this hunt better.”

Dean opens his mouth, clearly wanting to argue, but Castiel silences him with a look.

“This is going to hurt,” he warns, not giving Dean time to brace himself before pulling the knife out.

Dean groans, gripping Castiel’s arm tightly, and blood begins to flow freely from the wound. Castiel closes his palm over it, whispering a quick healing spell. It’s not one he casts often, taking more energy than he can normally give, but Dean has always been the exception.

The wound seals over as Castiel finishes the incantation and Dean sighs in relief, cheeks flushing a healthy pink. Castiel smiles, feeling lightheaded and weak from the effects of the spell, but nothing near what he was expecting.

He goes willingly when Dean sits up and gets them both to their feet, stumbling against him as Dean pulls him into a hug.

“You stupid bastard,” Dean mutters, which Castiel takes as his way of saying ‘thank you’.

“You’re welcome,” Castiel says and Dean laughs, pulling back just enough for their lips to meet in a desperate kiss.

“You can’t-” Dean says as they part, and Castiel feels a small thrill at how out of breath he already sounds, “-you can’t be doing this shit, Cas. Those spells take way too much out of you, I’m not worth it.”

Castiel shakes his head. Dean is wrong on so many levels here, it’s hard for him to know where to start. “You are. And you give me so much more than you take.”

Dean snorts derisively and Castiel shuts down any further arguments with another kiss.

I got a DM from @bookkbaby about my answer re destiel fanfic and I’m answering it here because i love to talk about fic ;)

Not the Anon but love the discussion re: fanfic. I think some of it stems from how inconsistent the show is? like, the divide in fanfic between stories written by Cas fans vs Dean fans: the show is very much about Dean and his POV and unless you're very interested in Cas's perspective, you don't think about it. Plus the episodes themselves vary wildly depending on who is writing: you can have an episode from someone who thinks Cas is OK one week and the next is written by someone who thinks Cas should've died seasons ago and stayed dead. It's kind of fascinating

Oh, yes, Cas characterization in fics is a fascinating thing. First there was so little canon of him, especially if you compared to Dean, and fic writers had to fill in the gaps. Then the show writers interpreted him differently, but it was still canon and fic writers had to pick and chose. Not to mention that the show really doesn’t care about Cas’ story, so we get so little meat on those plot prop bones. (Does Cas have a room in the bunker? Does he have any personal things there? Who knows!) In early days fandom also had a field day with smushing Cas into nerd/jock cliche and we had all those High School AUs with weak, smol, shy, bullied Cas. Which is cool! Every author writes what they want and fictional characters are here to play with. But yea, inconsistent canon material for Cas has encouraged much wider interpretations even among writers who are Cas fans and want to write Cas POV fic. So, IMO, while you can pick a random Dean POV fic and still get the same set of issues, Cas POV fics are a bit of a gamble and it depends on the author’s choices. With Cas POV fics it really pays off to remember author’s name and check out their other fics, if you liked the first one. Like, there are fic writers who interpret Cas as autistic/ asexual/ demisexual even if they don’t tag it explicitly in every fic, or writers who write more assertive, bamf Cas vs writers who explore Cas’ softer side. Or, lol, to tread fandom hot waters, canon fic writers who write fallen, human Cas vs writers who write angel Cas. I mean, these are all personal choices, fueled by personal biases. There’s no rigid canon in transformative works.

Oooh. That’s tough. Does purgatory!Cas count as a variation? Because purgatory is my weakness. But if not, then I’d say my favourite variation of Cas is just Cas.

S4-5 Castiel before he was unnecessarily weakened and made a trope of himself.

Warrior of Heaven!Cas that threatened to throw Dean back into hell for being snarky with him.

Who bamfed in and out of situations in the most badass way possible.

Who cut off Pestilence’s fingers for accusing him of being a weak human.

Who adapted to being human with ease and used a shotgun like a pro.

Who looked at a Devil’s trap and knew Uriel had fucked with it.

Who tricked Meg and used her as a means to escape a ring of Holy fire.

That Cas.

Not to say I don’t love current Castiel with all my heart. I just have a weakness for how he was at the start.

Hello Steffi! I wanted to ask you what you thought of the SPN Finale? Personally I was disappointed, because it was forseeable and because they kept throwing Cas over furniture (like he is no angel at all??? Where is his power? They said Cas would be more like S4!Cas but I feel like he is useless (bc what does he do in the episode? Nothing.) and I dont like it!! Cas is my BAMF!Baby!). The only good point for me is finally seeing "the sword" of Michael (no sexual pun intended!)

I haven’t had the chance to rewatch it yet and I still swoon whenever I see Dean with wings, so I’m positive towards it. I was entertained while I watched the episode and the cliffhanger gave me something to work with to tide me over the long, long months stretching between now and season 14. Other than the S12 finale, to be honest.

But in terms of how they utilized Cas, then yes, that was a bit underwhelming. He was easily removed from any fight and side-lined - he wasn’t at the big show down moment. And, scandalously, we haven’t seen him and Dean hug. You can’t tell me that Cas wouldn’t desperately hug Dean in this situation because we know that he does that now (see S11 finale and their reunion in S12).

So, it was a bit weak on the Cas and Dean/Cas front, but I still enjoyed it. :3

Hello my friends!! Here I came with a new volume from this project, thanks to @agusvedder for making the gifs in this meta, if you need some gifs, ask her, she is amazing! And also, she helped me a lot to analyze "The Rapture", bc this is one of her favs episodes! Thank you girl!! 💕💕

This volume is very very Dean and Cas POV, we are going to travel through their fascination for each other, before we enter in the finale volume and talk about Castiel's fall.

Dean's fascination for Castiel

Dean was afraid from the very beginning, but also, so attracted and fascinated with this powerful supernatural been. Castiel's aura full of security, power, beauty, purity, innocence and strength, it was beyond his human understanding. And the fact that this angel had saved him from Hell, giving him a mission, it was too much for him.

It took just a couple of seconds for Castiel to understand the most deepest fears and weakness inside Dean's soul. Dean was captivated, but at the same time, he was insecure about the message. But then this angel went with that thing he said...

This was and this is still the thing with Dean Winchester. And CAS saw it from the first time. A broken human. And Dean should be surprised bc no one ever could find out this.

In their second encounter, Dean felt the powerful energy from this angel. He experimented just a little of how BAMF could be Castiel... Fear/attraction/intimidation/fascination, as I explained before, in that scene in the kitchen, full of sexual tension.

Then... The heart to heart talk in the park. This angel wasn't so unreachable as he looked... He had doubts too...

Castiel said to him, he was special, important, he had a mission, that was a bunch of huge things to process, knowing nobody never had told him such nice things. And that will continue till now.

And how I can said Dean was fascinated with CAS so early in the season? The Rapture 4x20 is the proof.

The Rapture showed us how Heaven punished Castiel when they discovered he had helped Dean to stop Sam to kill Lilith, by telling him about Archangel protecting prophets. And he was trying to reveal Dean their plans, THEY WERE BEHIND THE APOCALYPSE CONSUMPTION, AND THEY WILL USE DEAN AS MICHAEL'S VESSEL. So Castiel, already with his doubts and free will on his door, he decided to help Dean. But it was too late... They took him to Heaven and let his vessel alone.

The scene in the pier, inside Dean's dream was short but very significant...

CASTIEL : "We need to talk."

DEAN : "I'm dreaming, aren't I?"

CASTIEL : "It's not safe here. Someplace more private."

DEAN: "More private? We're inside my head."

CASTIEL: "Exactly. Someone could be listening."

DEAN: "Cas, what's wrong?"

CASTIEL: "Meet me here."

Castiel knew they were being observed by Heaven, and he had very huge news for the Hunter.

But when they went to that place, Castiel wasn't there, but Jimmy Novak.

And here we had two differents attitudes coming from Dean. First of all, he empathize with the poor Jimmy, and wanted to help him to come with his family, but Sam had another plans...

But after meeting Anna on the car (thanks Agus FOR helping me with this thing 😘💕) things changed...

Anna was worried bc Heaven had took CAS, Dean thought that was something good, but Anna said... "No. That's a very bad thing. Painfully, awfully bad. He must have seriously pissed someone off."

And since then, knowing Castiel has something huge to tell him, trying to help him, Dean began to feel worried about the angel. Cas was being punished because of him.

And there we had the switch in Dean.

We had this scene too.

At first I thought Dean is feeling pitty for him again... Maybe is thinking the poor Jimmy has to let his family behind to protect them... But then we had this scene...

That's still Jimmy getting shot, why do they have to show us Dean's face?? Not Sammy, not demon!Amelia, but Dean's face and in such desperate expression. That wasn't Castiel, but it was his vessel. Dean was becoming familiar with this angel, even if the vessel hadn't any magnetism for him, Castiel had. Because it's Castiel's magnetic and mysterious aura, full of power and sexiness, and innocence, his intense gaze, the way he talks and moves, who made Dean feel so attracted to him. But even so... This was his vessel and it was very strange to see him getting shot, maybe if he dies Castiel wouldn't come back?

Then my head came back again to the hug scene between Jimmy and Amelia. And was the same energy. Dean knows he isn't Castiel, but it was weird for him watch his vessel hugging a woman...

Yes .. Dean can properly said... He was fascinated with Castiel, the angel, and not his vessel. It was obvious that Jimmy Novak was a very handsome man, but without Castiel, he was just that. Castiel presence gave him the perfect mix. Beautiful for the outside, and beautiful inside. With the entire description about his aura I already wrote... Perfect combination.

Castiel's fascination for Dean

Castiel felt attracted to Dean from the very beginning. He saw through Dean and found a broken man. A bright and beautiful soul, but broken, he didn't have faith, and he didn't love himself...

In episode 4x07 Castiel was looking at him with such an intensity and curiosity in his eyes. Watching the way Dean Winchester wanted to go against Heaven's orders and follow his own decisions was fascinating... Even if Heaven's orders were to follow Dean's decision, even so, the bright light of FREE WILL in this human was irresistible to him. If Anna represented his doubts and rebellion, Dean will be his teacher in Free Will.

Now, let's focus on 4x20, "The Rapture".

When Castiel came back from Heaven to help Jimmy Novak's family, he took his vessel back, and now BRAINWASHED BY HEAVEN, he avoided Dean's gaze, and he was about to leave without saying a word.

But Dean wanted to know what happened, and what was CAS about to tell him before all this mess.

Agus pointed me Castiel's attitude when Dean called him ...

He didn't want to have to speak with Dean... Bc Heaven had made him suffer and this time they brainwashed him, and strictly put in his head HE OBEY TO HEAVEN. AND NOT GET "CLOSE" TO THIS HUMAN, no more... That's why we had this, Castiel turned around to see Dean, he didn't want that. He didn't want to confront this human that had fascinated him so badly to the point of considering disobedience.

And he repeats then his lesson, learned with blood in Heaven...

DEAN: "Cas, hold up. What were you gonna tell me?"

CASTIEL: "I learned my lesson while I was away, Dean. I serve heaven, I don't serve man, and I certainly don't serve you."

Dean blinks full of confusion, he doesn't understand why Castiel is acting like that... And again that distinction between HUMANS/MAN and DEAN. Is because of Dean, again.

To conclude:

Castiel and Dean were fascinated with each other from the very beginning.

Dean was a mix of fascination, fear and attraction and Castiel a mix of forbidden feelings unexplored.

Heaven acted like a boundary between them, trying to separate his soldier from Dean.

The recurrent assistance from the angel to Dean obligate Heaven to be more rough with their punishment for Castiel. This time Castiel learned painfully his lesson... But not for so long... Because we all know he has this crack in his chasis...

13x04: Peel Back the Layers, Dean Winchester

So, many of us - if not all - have been flailing over this image, hoping against all hope that it would be tied somehow to Dean shedding his performing side and allowing himself to just be himself. BAMF dirt under his fingernails caring loving soft hunter that he is. And, of course, that is EXACTLY what this image is tied to. I say this way way way too much on this blog but here it comes for the nosebleed section: mind fucking blown to bits.

Let me extrapolate and dig into the the feminine/masculine theme, which has always been present on this show, but that is focused on in interesting ways this season. 

So, I realised how closely linked this theme is with Dean’s character progression when I wrote my 4x05 meta and in that episode - Monster Movie - the entire narrative, as I see it, revolves around this theme, and the thematic question of Who Am I? Yeah, not much has changed since those days, has it? (thank goodness) (because they’re about to let Dean answer that question for himself) (*tap dancing across tables*)

Here’s how I see it -->

The Feminine, simply put, is Dean’s non-performing side

The Masculine - the toxically so - is Dean’s performing side

When these two find balance with each other that balance will cancel out the toxic masculinity and Dean will be free to be himself, which is a combination of the good qualities of his feminine side and the good qualities of his masculine side. Dean will always be Dean, but he’ll be able to embrace his feelings, his inner nurturer and caretaker: his mothering side, if you will. This while rejecting the toxic masculinity that keeps his need for control so prevalent, that keeps him from trusting, putting his faith in others and believing himself worthy of others putting their trust and faith in him, of good things happening to him, of salvation and a long and happy life.

So, then. What does all this have to do with a shifter peeling his face off?

Well, ironically it’s a shifter that first brought the masculine/feminine theme to my attention, because a shifter with a skewed sense of self takes the focus of the 4x05 narrative, where he’s one of the prominent representatives of toxic masculinity. In 13x04, our shifter - Buddy - takes on that role in an even more on-the-nose portrayal as Buddy literally embodies everything that makes toxic masculinity so... toxic.

Buddy is controlling, selfish, compulsive, obsessive, violent, destructive. Poisonous. I mean, they could not have made it clearer that this male figure is not someone to emulate. He ruins lives for the fun of it. He dresses himself in the skin of loved ones, pretending to be someone to be trusted, only to get close to his intended victim in order to kill them, which to me rings out like a gong of a metaphor for Dean’s self-blame, as Dean’s reliance on Cas and inability to be open and honest with him about where that reliance stems from - to Dean - is most likely the reason Cas is dead. (and narratively it kinda is) (sorry Dean) (tell the people you love that you love them) (or show them) (or make sure they know you want them to stay with you) (and they’re not just a weapon)

So what made me think of Buddy as a Dean mirror - apart from the face peel?

Well, let’s take a look at two Dean Winchester moments in this episode that stand out to me in this context:

These two distinct moments are both all demonstrative of how Dean is utterly rejecting his feminine side. 

Both times - no, let me repeat that - BOTH TIMES in direct relation to a mention of John, when Sam calls Dean out for “starting to sound like dad”, Dean responding “is that a bad thing?” (!!!YES IT IS DEAN!!!), and then Sam mentions John in relation to keeping a journal, which John did, and Dean rejects as not the same thing [because John’s journal was for fact keeping, not jotting down girly feelings]. 

He not only separates himself from the feminine - but John, too.

I mean, obviously he would do that.

But what is this season doing if not forcing Dean to take a good, hard, long look at exactly why he’s putting up a facade, at exactly how his idolatry of his father has informed his personality to such a degree that its become an armour to dress himself in? This season is about deconstructing John as much as it is about deconstructing Dean, but it’s the John inside Dean’s head that needs deconstructing, just as Mary did in S12. Mary was allowed to become flesh and bone, a real human being, a person, with wants and needs of her own.

“I am your mother - but I am not just a mom.”

It’s time for the ghost of John that Dean has kept alive in his head - however subconscious the keeping alive has been - to have its bones salted and burned.

Realising that his mother is her own person, no matter how much she’s still searching for her true identity as well, is the stepping stone for Dean realising the same of his father. That the ghost traces of John kept alive inside Dean is kept alive through Dean’s perceptions, and misconceptions, of John Winchester. 

As children, we rarely actually know our parents. We know them as our parents, but it’s always hard to view their flaws as part of their humanity, their mistakes and bad choices as part of their struggles, their life journey, their life progression - a progression that, fundamentally, is actually separate from our own. Just as it can be equally difficult for a parent to remember this about their child. Well, to simplify something as complex as this topic, because, of course, there are as many different circumstances informing the parent-child bond as there are parents with kids, so all I can really draw on here is my reading of Dean and where he’s at right now in his individual arc. 

And where he’s at is needing to see that his convictions of who he needs to be in order to keep Sammy safe - and, by extension, the world - which has been the root of Dean’s whole sense of self, the root for his identity up until now, is based on the influences of his father, absolutely, but that Dean is choosing to perpetuate this conviction. It’s Dean’s choice to put on this suit of armour because he’s been brought up to believe that feelings are weaknesses, and without the suit of armour he not only feels things too damn acutely (too big a heart and all that), but he also fears that not wearing this armour - this performance - means he can’t protect anyone, which leaves him not knowing who he is or how to behave or what his purpose is or what his worth could possibly be. 

He has to realise that he was brought up to be the hammer, but innately he’s the shield - and just as much the protector because of it. 

Dean has to understand that he can choose not to put on that armour and it will not affect who he is, because the armour was always a facade, it does not inform his personality in the slightest. He has always been him, he’s just been tied down by fear and insecurity and doubt. He’s allowed others (the influence of his father, as influenced by his marine background, heavily influenced by societal norms) to dictate who he can be, who he should be, and yes, this exact thematic focus keeps being hit on again and again this season.

Again and again and again.

There is no weird, everyone’s normal in their own way.

You are who you choose to be.

You try to force it down to make someone else happy, you’ll only make yourself miserable.

Dean is by 13x04 in a glorious place. I do so love it here. I like to call it the Cusp. He is right on the Cusp, peeps. And I’m dancing.

Anyway, back to the episode.

We have the Toxic Masculinity Representative, right?

Oh, yeah. Big time.

And what else do we have? We have the strong, kickass, smart, no-nonsense representative of awesomeness. (oops I mean Femininity.) Because Mia takes one look at Dean, at his performance, at his anger, his bottled up emotions, his rejecting his brother because Sam is consistently being open and honest and pushing for openness and honesty, for Dean to take the healthy approach, Mia sums all of this up in about ten seconds flat, tries to prod Dean into opening up and when he lashes out (”ever since I was a little girl” he says to the narrative representative of his feminine side and it’s fucking beautiful, to my mind) Mia doesn’t waste a beat before she calls him out on his behaviour.

On how he’s taking his anger out on Sam and how his performance, his armour, is making it impossible for him to relate to Sam, and how his brother truly is grieving as well. And she calls him out on how his performance is rendering Jack - aka the representative of change and reaching balance - petrified of him. (oh yeah Dean is fighting this transformation) (because it is scary as all hell) (because there’s no reason for this transformation anymore) (because Cas is gone) (so there is no long and happy future) (well... wait for it, Dean... wait for it... have a little patience...) 

Now let’s move into the most significant moment of this episode, which just serves to hammer all of the feminine/masculine theme home to me -->

Not only is Mia empathic, nurturing and caring (she wants to help) - she also gets to visually step into the good mother role (one of the strongest symbols of positive femininity throughout this show) as she shifts into the shape of Kelly, allowing Jack one final moment with his mother and telling him that even monsters can do good, allowing Jack to have a newfound sense of faith in himself - of course leading right to him being able to save Sam. 

Then, after shedding the outer layer of Dean Winchester - very, very visually tying himself to Dean Winchester - Buddy the Shifter begins to spew his poison, focusing primarily on how he resents her for leaving him, believing she could make a life for herself without him, and now he’s there to destroy that life. He’s going to make her kill again.

Translation: the toxic masculinity is telling the strong, kickass femininity that she’s worthless without him, dictating to her who she is and that she will never be rid of him, and all this, we know, is because of the mistakes she’s made in the past, where she let him rule her life, guide her onto the wrong path and influence her.

Yeah, Dean. Suck on that. LOOK AT HIS FACE! (I love his face)

And what does the strong, kickass femininity do? She does this -->

She says Hell No. You will not tell me who I am, not ever again. I will not listen to you, be beaten down by you or succumb to you, not ever again. I would rather die - wholly myself - than follow you anywhere ever again. 

This effectively does what? It nullifies Dean’s performance-fuelled notion that all things female are associated with weakness, with being submissive and taking orders - never doling them out, because look at this BAMF female, standing up for herself like a goddamn warrior.

Now, what is truly intriguing to me is that Dean stays cuffed in this scene - cuffed by Buddy, no less - and Jack can’t get him loose, Jack can’t do anything, until Sam’s in danger. Sam, who is representative of what? The supportive, empathic, increasingly balanced guardian figure, whose honestly caring about Jack, trying his best to guide him. Here’s the most intriguing part: Sam is the one to shoot the toxic masculinity representative.

Back in good old 4x05, the Girl of the Week - Jamie (representing strong, kickass femininity) - shoots the shifter (toxic masculinity), but in that episode the shifter also puts Dean in bonds that he can’t get out of, needing Sam’s help. I’m getting the increasingly overwhelming feeling that Dean truly needs Sam to push him into the next stage of his character development, and it’s small wonder - Dean has functioned as Sam’s parental figure, but Sam is an adult now, and isn’t it time Sam got to confront his childhood influence as much as it’s time for Dean to confront John? 

Sam providing Dean with the final bolt in the machinery that sets him on a path of no return, where Dean will have to face the questions Who am I? and Who do I want to be? head on makes absolute sense to me. Protect Sammy has been Dean’s inner motto since Dean was four years old. Sam doesn’t need protecting anymore, Sam is stepping up to be Dean’s equal, so it would make for a rather beautiful bookend to Dean’s internal journey if the root motto, instilled in him by John, is shattered and left behind thanks to Sam’s good influence.

But I’ll dig into that in another post.

Oh, also, I just love these blues, purples and pinks (and the fact that the only real splash of colour in the first scene set in Mia’s office is a bright pink flower) (yeah they’re going all out with the pink and blue makes purple symbolism) (with splashes of yellow thrown in for good measure) (wonder why...) -->

There’s a bald eagle in a child’s drawing on the wall (unless my eyes deceive me). The eagle represents freedom and the courage to look ahead, and not only is it - as a national symbol - such a fantastic tie-back to the US itself, where equality, acceptance and democratic freedom is under attack at the moment, but it’s also related to this:

During the Sun Dance, which is practiced by many Plains Indian tribes, the eagle is represented in several ways. During the dance, a medicine man may direct his fan, which is made of eagle feathers, to people who seek to be healed. The medicine man touches the fan to the center pole and then to the patient, in order to transmit power from the pole to the patient. The fan is then held up toward the sky, so that the eagle may carry the prayers for the sick to the Creator.

I just thought this ^^^ was lovely - related to this painting or not - because this season feels like it’s so, so much about healing, about becoming whole.

Them working together, them laughing together, Cas being a total BAMF with Raphael and Dean probably getting some naughty thoughts in the process xDD
