We had a silent rehearsal in band, where nobody could talk at all for any reason, and the director would write on the board or type on the... other board lol
It was so funny for no reason
"Altos, F#. Repent for your sins."
"[Sax player] Has lost it. I lost it long ago"
(After a flutist fell off her chair) "Everyone play at 63. Including floor girl."
Oh, and the fact that after a particularly hard part for the flutes, we could all hear the faint sound of Floor Girl sobbing. That killed me lol
There were also these beauties that I managed to snap photos of before she erased them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gonna write them out here cause the photos kinda suck and tbh I need to do this more often in general lol
"10 was good. Altos fell in love with the quarter note when they took over the melody. The relationship is over, leave it behind. It's unhealthy to hold on too long."
"Good job *sarcasam*"

Bro band kids are the best people ever. The BD let us off early because we performed our rehearsal really well. We were all chillin around, when I decided to lay on the floor. I laid on my back, rested my phone on my chest and started playing Funkytown (one of our pep songs). AS soon as I did that five of my classmates came over and started to dance around me, singing along. We then started playing random songs and dancing around the person who picked the song. That happened for about 30 minutes.

We’re working on jazz band today.
I am a percussionist.
I have nothing to play for jazz band.
I am sitting in the corner.
With nothing to do.
I am moral support.
Yet I lack morals.
This is band.
Whatever shall I do?
Only the gods of the band hall know.

Eddie headcanon ramble:
Eddie is the type of prick who got As in all his electives and dog-shit in his required classes, hence repeating senior year twice.
He could’ve been top student in his English classes but he had aggravated the teachers so much so that by 12th grade they all had it out for him. They refused to grade him fairly cuz he never stayed on point in essays or criticized the topics or talked over their lectures to pick at flaws in their analysis of texts. So he managed middling Cs all the way through.
Math was his worst subject not because math was hard per se, but because Mrs. O’Donnell was a witch who hated the way he did everything and failed him out of spite. That was the class that caused him to fail senior year both times.
But his electives? Fucking easy As for him. He had the drama teacher wrapped around his pinky finger, and the art teacher was his toking buddy. Automotive and Wood-shop were both a breeze as he was always good with his hands and willing to mentor the younger students for extra credit.
And band. Easiest class of all. Eddie had been in band since 5th grade and only dropped in his final repeat year cuz they said he couldn’t take any more credits in it.
He’d started out in percussion as one does when you’re too loud and rowdy to be trusted with the more delicate instruments. But by 6th grade he’d managed to contain his more obvious outbursts and impulsivity (with some help and coaching from Wayne) and was allowed the try alto saxophone. He immediately loved it and worked his way through alto, tenor, and baritone by the time he had his first senior run, alternating back into percussion as needed. Sometimes you just need to hit shit.
That’s where he met Jeff actually. They were in the same saxophone section together in middle school and became fast friends despite their age gap.
Grant also was in band with them (euphonium) but joined their friend group through Hellfire, and it took them a bit to realize the other connection.
Gareth was last, being the youngest, and Eddie met him after training the freshman on percussion. He was a natural despite having no musical background, and later that year Eddie would welcome him not only into Hellfire but also into Corroded Coffin to replace himself as drummer. This gave Eddie the opportunity to switch into his true love: guitar. Which his mom taught him to play when he was very little, being a music teacher and all. The acoustic is hers.
Bonus Headcanon for Steve:
He was also in band through Elementary and Middle school, but dropped it freshman year cuz his dad forced him to switch into more sports.
He played clarinet for most of it and he was good. Like, really good. But when he became friends with Tommy in 6th grade, he got teased for playing something girly and uncool, so he quit and switched over to percussion for his last two years. He didn’t like any of the other brass or winds and felt too self-conscious to do anything more than be in the back hitting drums. But he was good at that too and made the most of it. His mother was disappointed (she always appreciated his musical talents) but his father saw it as an opportunity to shift focus to more sports related things. Steve had always been in little league and his dad made him try out for swim team and basketball freshman year also. It took up all his time so band was left behind.
Additionally, Steve took piano lessons from age 4 to 11. His father stopped paying for lessons once he hit intermediate status. Said it was a waste to go further as music wasn’t a “sustainable profession.” He only ever used the talent for family events anyway. His mother keeps a pretty upright in living room, mostly for show or parties, and Steve plays it sometimes.
Only Robin knows he’s as good as he is, but she doesn’t know about the clarinet or drums. She just thinks Steve is odd for being so particular about her band practices.

Okay, how does band class for the MSB gang… from the very start to the end?
Instruments the kids play:
Wanda: Trombone. Frequently out of tune.
Keesha: Clarinet. Forgot to change the reed, which is now rotten.
Phoebe: Saxophone. Also forgets to change the reed.
Carlos: Usually his invented instrument (which has no way to be played properly.) He has also tried other instruments with similarly disastrous results.
Tim: Violin. The strings snapped in the middle of practice a few times.
Arnold: Sousaphone (which Wanda shoved him in one time).
Ralphie: Xylophone and all other percussion instruments. Frequently forgets his drumsticks.
Dorothy Ann: Oboe or harp. The only member of band class who seems to actually know how to be in a band.
Mikey: Piano or electric keyboard. Played with the rest of the gang for one performance, and then swore he'd never do it again.
Stuff that happens/headcanons
One time Carlos decided to play the recorder. It was a disaster.
Carlos's musical atrocities actually help cover up how terrible the rest of the band sounds... as they found out when he was absent for practice.
Liz is the conductor.
Keesha and Ralphie keep using the clarinet and drumsticks to sword-fight each other.
Carlos also taught himself how to play harmonica. However, the only song he knows is "Piano Man."
Phoebe once read the sheet music for her part upside down.
Janet attends a practice session and mocks the class. Wanda decides to use the slider of the trombone to whack her.
Ralphie often likes to make things up as he goes with the drums. ("Who needs sheet music? I am literally just hitting stuff.")
Wanda brought the wrong sheet music one time.
The brass and woodwind instruments either sound okay, or they sound like an animal being tortured. There is no in between.
Phoebe, Wanda, and Arnold are the Out of Tune Gang.
During one session, Carlos made way too many music puns so that even Tim had enough.
Tim: If you don't stop making terrible music puns, I am going to hit you with my violin.
Carlos: Oh, is that a fret?
Tim: >: (
Carlos: (running away) Violins is never the solution!

Clementines, Mandarins, and Other Orange Cravings: The Dictionary - Page 225
(Volume 1 and only, written by Noone You Need to Know)
Note: I wrote the entirety of this piece to nothing but this song on loop and I highly recommend reading it that way too :) Pg. Index and pg. 225, 401, 145, 159, 167, 152, 151, 60, 92, 134, 149, and 203
timbre (tam • bur), n. “…the perceived sound quality of a musical note, sound or tone…” (“Timbre” 1), commonly used as a distinguisher between different instruments (vocal or otherwise) playing the same note, a way to take note of the differences in the origins of where two sounds come from within their shared pitch. Often a deciding factor in a 6th grader’s decision of which instrument they’re willing to confine themselves to for an entire semester of band class. [French.]
