Review: Miraculous "Marinette" Fashion doll from Bandai (2017)
When I was younger and my family would go shopping, I always wanted to look through the doll isle (which hasn't changed, haha). The Bandai Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir doll line was fairly new at the time, and on this one particular trip to a nearby city, the Target there had Marinette and Cat Noir, but Ladybug and Adrien were out of stock.
I hadn't seen Miraculous yet, but I recall thinking Marinette was really pretty (she had BLUE pigtails! Blue's always been my favorite color, and her having blue hair was so cool to 11 year old me), but Cat Noir looked kinda weird to me (why was he dressed like a cat but Marinette was dressed normally??). I never ended up getting that Marinette doll while she was still being sold. I did end up getting one on eBay, but I'd like to get one new in box, or at least with her clothes.
The Marinette doll I'm reviewing today is from a later party line, which included Marinette and Chloé with dresses and their hair down, and released in 2017.
Marinette originally retailed for $14.99 USD, but I purchased her new in box for $19.99 USD on eBay.
Tumblr media
Marinette wears a pink satin dress with white polka dots and black trim, along with a red necklace, purse, and high heels.
I don't have any good photos of Marinette in her box, but she is a prime example of why I do not like leaving dolls in their boxes. I just like having them out, yes, but also, playline doll packaging isn't intended to be preserved, and can often negatively affect the doll. The packing ties warped her arms and dented her legs. Luckily, I was able to fix this with hot water.
Tumblr media
Marinette has light blue eyes, brown eyebrows, pink lips, and pink blush. I think she has a very sweet, kind expression. I don't think she bares a very strong resemblance to Marinette in the TV series, but she's very pretty nonetheless.
Her waist-length blue hair is a blend of dark blue and black. I think it's really pretty! It comes styled in a half-ponytail. Unfortunately, the elastic band that held it in place disintegrated almost as soon as I opened the box. Ew. Luckily, I was able to retie her ponytail and the crumbled elastic left nothing gross in her hair.
She has a chunky red beaded necklace around her neck. The color choice is the most baffling to me. Why is it red?? I feel like either it and her accessories should be black, or the black trim on her dress should be red.
Tumblr media
Here's Marinette's hair from the back. It has a slight wave to the ends. It isn't very soft, but I wouldn't say it's coarse, either. Here you can see the contrasting blues!
Tumblr media
I really like Marinette's dress! It's pale pink with white polka-dots, and has a sweetheart neckline, with two straps that secure behind her neck with (a slightly weak) strip of velcro. The waist is trimmed with black ribbon, and the skirt is trimmed with black tulle.
The skirt flares out a bit, and the combination of red, white, and pink is very flattering on her. It follows Marinette's color scheme and patterning she has in the series, which makes it look like something Marinette would design herself (in the series, Marinette is an aspiring fashion designer).
Marinette has 11 points of articulation, with movement at her:
Neck
Shoulders
Elbows
Wrists (which only swivel)
Hips
Knees
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Marinette's dress has a minor manufacturing defect, with a slight fraying in the satin skirt. I find the way the dress lays tends to hide it, though.
Tumblr media
Marinette's heels are very chunky flatforms, with a molded bow on the strap. I actually think they're really cute, even if the color choice confuses me.
Tumblr media
Marinette has a rubber red purse with a small molded bow on top. It's cute, but I still wish it was black.
Tumblr media
Marinette actually has a huge range of articulation, but they're all stopped short by the upper limb they're connected to. If the elbow was cut at an angle, the arms and knees could bend very far. Due to the cut of the elbow and knee, Marinette's arms and legs can't even bend to a 90 degree angle.
Tumblr media
Overall, I'm very happy with Marinette. She has a few issues, mostly design-wise (the color scheme of her accessories look odd with her dress to me, and the design of her upper limbs limit her articulation), but I'm able to overlook them to enjoy her.
The articulation, in particular, may be a dealbreaker (especially those who get irritated with any doll that doesn't have the articulation of a Made to Move Barbie), but if it isn't, I'd definitely recommend her. However, I would not recommend her for any price over $20 USD in used condition, and $35 USD new in box.

I was scrolling through ML toys wiki page because that's what my brain decided to fixate on this evening, and I just unearthed some memories of the merch that was announced but never came out.
Look at this. This Chat was supposed to come with a skateboard and a grappling hook, are you kidding me. I'd love that!
Tumblr media
Then there are these two. Chloe's wearing a very stereotypically french outfit but I kinda dig it. There is also a concept art of Alya, and man, I wish we got a civilian doll of her and not just Rena Rouge.
Tumblr media
And also I love this bakery set. Just adorable
Tumblr media
I wonder if these concept dolls are still owned by the company or if they're out there somewhere and can pop up on AliExpress or eBay like some rejected dolls 🤔
Moving onto stuff that was actually released, one of the things I like about Bandai dolls is that they would just make up designs that haven't appeared in the show. These two are my favourite - Daring Ladybug and Snowbug <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe the change in merch happened not just because they switched to Playmates but also because they wanted to show Ladybug as more of a badass hero instead of a pretty girl in a dress? I mean, there was a whole #Ladybug_is_a_Hero_NOT_a_Princess movement when Icebug appeared in Frozer with a tiara and high heels on skates. But I think you could do both. Let her have some magical girl outfits 👏
(Also for gender equality, I think they should put Adrien/Chat in dresses too. Just an idea. But seriously, I would love a princess Adrien doll)
Tumblr media
Speaking of Adrien, I'm delighted that his Bandai doll comes not with his bag, but with his rapier. This boy is ready to fight! If only there was a Kagami doll, then I'd get both and make them duel 😔
This turned into me just gushing about Bandai dolls, sorry 😅 Sometimes I just have to ramble about dolls

Fell in love with the TV show Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir and it's easy to tell who my favorite character is. Oh look Monarch I got Cat Noir's Miraculous and you don't,lol The Adrien cologne/perfume smells really really good! The Marinette and Adrien dolls come with their super hero costumes to change them into Ladybug and Cat Noir. I have no idea why Marinette's jacket sleeves won't stay up,lol The cat noir in the chair is made by playmates and has his staff and his kwamii Plagg, the other Cat Noir is made by Bandai and has his staff that's open to use his communicator. Included a picture of my Cat Noir backpack.

Remember when I said I wanted a Marinette doll? Well... I bought one. I've been keeping an eye on listings for them for a while now and they were always $65+ and when they weren't, they were snatched up in seconds, even if they had their hair chopped off and missing their hands.
But then! I found this one for $13! She looks to be the standard Marinette, since she has a part in the back of her hair for pigtails, and cut hair for her side bangs, but her face tells me that she isn't a first wave, but was made sometime after mid-2017, because the Marinette and Ladybug doll's faces changed subtly that year.
She'll ship tomorrow morning, and is coming to the midwest from California!

Smallish toy-haul from all over the place. From top to left to bottom front right: BanDai  Adverge Motion 3 Demon Slayer Complete Figure Set; Playmates Miraculous Ladybug Marienette Fashion Doll; Hasbro Disney Style Mulan Fashion Doll; Mattel Barbie Looks #8 Fashion Doll; Just Play Disney Doorables The Nightmare Before Christmas Collection Peek (Walmart exclusive) set; KamiSoul Master Figuarts Action Figure Body.
I’m super excited to get the KamiSoul body. I accidentally stumbled upon it, while looking for bodies I can use for my 1:6 female head sculpts I want on male bodies. They have an awesome figure based on the King’s Avatar license; I don’t know if they only have the license in China, but I haven’t seen the figure sold anywhere else but a few Chinese retailers. I haven’t watched the series, so I don’t know if I want to collect the figure, but I wanted to get the loose body and hopefully the head sculpt, as it looks gorgeous. Sadly, they don’t seem to be selling loose heads at this point. Their official shop had a few clothing sets, but Google only translates gibberish, so I have no clue if they are all sold out by now. I haven’t seen them on other retailers either, so I just had to settle for the nude body. Which is way too big for my female heads, but I think I can make it work for other projects I have in mind. (:
I am pretty happy with all the other purchases. Particularly Barbie Looks #8, she is stunning! I am hoping I can get #9, and a few of the earlier releases as well as a second of #5 to unbox as well as another one of #8 to unbox as well, because I am a hoarder. Lol! DX My Mulan seems to have misplaced eyes and eyebrows, but I got her for a very nice price, so I can’t complain too much. Marienette’s eyes are also a bit wonky, but I’m guessing that’s just what they were meant to look like -- I don’t watch the series, just like the dolls, I own the earlier Bandai ones as well.

Review: "Fashion Flip Marinette" doll from Playmates Toys
Generally, I'm not a big fan of gimmicky dolls, with some exceptions. The doll I'm reviewing today is one of those exceptions!
Playmates Toys' Miraculous doll line has really been playing around with something I'm really surprised Bandai's doll line never did: transforming! In the series, Marinette and Adrien undergo Magical Girl/Magical Boy-esque transformation sequences into the superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir.
Playmates has come out with two lines that focus on their transformations: the Superhero Secret dolls and the Fashion Flip dolls. The Superhero secret dolls, which I've talked about in a different post, feature Marinette and Adrien in their regular civilian outfits, along with their superhero costumes that you can change them into. The Fashion Flip dolls have sequin covered suits that appear to look like their civilian outfits or their hero suits when flipped either up or down. Both Fashion Flip dolls retail for $19.99 USD, but Marinette often goes on sale for $10.00, which is the price I got mine for.
Tumblr media
Marinette has blue eyes and peach eyeshadow. She also has pink lips. She doesn't seem to have much blush, if any.
She has blue hair with the new bang style that goes to the side instead of going down and being cut straight like the older dolls. They tend to fall in her eye a lot.
I think she looks sweet, but slightly surprised, due to her eyebrows being placed very high up!
Tumblr media
Marinette's hair comes styled in two low pigtails, secured with red elastics. My Marinette seems to have longer pigtails than usual, and are slightly choppy. Her hair came coated in a strange hair product.
Unlike all of my other Marinette and Ladybug dolls, who had a gel in their hair that made it stiff, this Marinette's hair had some almost powdery product in it that started flaking immediately out of the package. I was able to get most of it out by spritzing it with water and combing it. I generally leave the hair product, since the pigtails are so short they tend to stick out weirdly without it, but since the product in this doll's hair didn't seem to really be doing anything to keep it in place, I didn't mind taking it out.
Tumblr media
Marinette comes wearing a one-piece suit with sequins sewn onto the front. When flipped down, the sequins resemble Marinette's everyday outfit, which consists of a white shirt, grey jacket, and pink pants. The only thing that really looks off is the black collar, which is for Ladybug's suit, so it's understandable. The sleeves on the jacket and pants are a bit too long for Marinette's outfit, but again, understandable, since it's to accommodate Ladybug's suit. I kinda think Marinette looks like she's dressed for colder weather, which will be nice in the fall. Not the best outfit for Midwestern July, though!
I think it looks pretty good. It is slightly bulky, but not too much.
Her articulation is the same as all the others. She has movement at the head, shoulders, hips, wrists, and double jointed elbows and knees, for a total of 15 joints.
Tumblr media
The back of the suit is left plain black, with no sequins. I've seen some complaints about this, but honestly it doesn't bother me. The suit is already pretty thick as-is, and adding sequins to the back would've added unnecessary bulk, and restrict her movement more than the suit already does.
The fabric is really nice! It's a decent thickness, and is slightly stretchy. The suit closes with a small strip of velcro at the top.
Tumblr media
And here's the Ladybug side! When the sequins are flipped up, the sequins resemble Ladybug's suit. It's a bit tricky to get them all flipped, particularly the sequins on the edges, but most of them move easily and smoothly.
Tumblr media
Her shoes are the same mold as the regular Marinette doll's, but in black instead of pink. I assume this is so they can work for both Ladybug and Marinette's outfits, since they have different shoes for their outfits.
They have a honeycomb pattern molded on the tops, while the bottoms are left smooth. This seems kind of odd to me, as in the series, Marinette's shoes don't have this pattern on them. Instead, they have a black rim with a little bow at the tip. The pattern actually reminds me of the Ladybug and Cat Noir's suits in the series, they actually do have a honeycomb pattern all over them!
Tumblr media
Marinette also comes wearing her Miraculous: a pair of red earrings with black spots. She only comes with one pair, though. She does not come with the detransformed pair that the regular Marinette doll, as well as Superhero Secret Marinette come with, which are black with red spots.
Tumblr media
Lastly, here's the mask! It's a hard plastic, with 5 large spots. I think it looks okay, but could be a bit better. It's slightly askew in this photo, but it usually covers her eyelashes. I think it would really benefit from having eyelashes and eyeliner painted on it, like the regular Ladybug doll. Also, since my particular Marinette has very high eyebrows, so they aren't covered by her mask, like they're supposed to be.
Tumblr media
The mask sticks to her face with these sticky... circle... things. I'm not entirely sure what they're called? Thankfully, they don't leave any residue on her face. Marinette also comes with a little sheet with an extra set of glue circles for when the mask stops sticking. Once you use both though, I'm not sure what you could use to make it stay on. Maybe double-sided tape?
Tumblr media
Here's how I usually have her posed! Due to the sticky pads on the mask, she can hold it without issue.
Overall, this is a very fun doll! I do think she's worth the full retail price, but she's an even better deal at the sale price. Despite my small qualms about her, Marinette is a great doll. I think the idea was executed well, and I hope they expand the line beyond Marinette and Adrien. There was an unfinished Fashion Flip Alya teased at Toy Fair back in February, so I look forward to her! Luka to Viperion would be really cool.

Did my monthly trip to a thrift store for bases for ooak doll projects, and one of the things I scored during it was one of the older Bandai releases of Cat Noir from Miraculous Ladybug. It looked like a decent representation of the character until I took off the jumpsuit and
Tumblr media
saw that he was apparently the most ripped 13-15 year old ever.
I know it’s like his superhero alter ego and all, but I really doubt those Miraculous powers have the capability of giving him a fucking six pack.

Hello! First, I want to let you that I love your Ladybug and Chat Noir repaint. They look incredible! I especially like how much they look like the real thing, and you even made Chat’s hair shinier! Most repaints and custom dolls I see just give him hair. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you make your dolls? And how did you do it? I heard you might’ve did something to the joints?
Hallo, @bluebasementwitch
It’s not letting me tag you so I hope you see this!
Thanks very much for the compliment!  I’m glad you like my dolls~   I like them so much more now than I did when they started too, haha.
My dolls are the Bandai dolls that were first released, not the new ones that have just been coming out in the last year.  This made the decision to repaint them easier, honestly!  They didn’t look anything like the characters, so modifying them was the obvious choice.   I bought mine right before they suddenly became scarce and expensive, so I can’t advise on where and how to get the older models now if you’re trying to get the same ones.
Anyway, since the dolls were designed to be the characters already, I didn’t have to change hair color or anything, and Chat’s hair was already sculpted and ready to go.  If I had been making them from scratch, I probably would have given him real hair too, as I’m not a big fan of sculpted hair, usually!  But I like his a lot and I think he was the first doll with sculpted hair I’d ever painted, so I wanted to give it a try.
I removed both of their default eyes with acetone as well as Ladybug’s lip color, added color and shading to both of their faces (and particularly Chat’s hair) with layers of sealant, watercolor pencils, and pastel, and then did much of the finishing work on the eyes with acrylic paint.  As I recall, I had to change the shape of Chat’s mask completely to fall on the right parts of his face, and the colors in his eyes were inverted in the factory paint on the doll, but Ladybug’s might still be the same mask outline she started with.  (I did these a few years ago!)   Both of their eyes were given an acrylic shiny gloss, and Ladybug’s mask was given tiny dots of the same sealant to look like the texture she has in close ups on the show.  Added earrings with acrylic paint and a little dome of acrylic gloss, of course. Earrings are essential for Ladybug.  I also hacked off most of her hair to better reflect the show.  It’s still the same hair she was sold with, there’s just less of it now.
Both dolls had hand joints that could only rotate in the wrist, but I wanted ones that could flex too.  So I pulled out the doll’s original hands and replaced them with hands from Monster High dolls.  Ladybug got basic monster high hands from a Draculaura that I painted red and sealed, and Chat got a pair of Monster High Abbey Bominable hands painted black because hers are bigger and include claws.  They’re a really good match for him, I’m really happy with how those look.  I added a portion of his costume around his wrists with some painted scrap leather I had lying around from an old project.  I had to paint his ring on the new hands, but it’s still on there, just very tiny.
Both dolls could bend at the elbows and knees already, but the range was not very big and they felt a little stiff, so I cut some of the plastic from the area where the two parts of the arms/legs collided so they had more range.  The dolls are always in bodysuits, so any weirdness this might have in how it looks isn’t a problem.   Now they move just enough more that they don’t feel as limited as they did when I first got them, and the new hands make them more expressive and less stiff.
I hope some of that is the information you wanted!  One of the things I love most in the world is dolls, including customizing them, so a lot of what I did with these two isn’t much different from what I have done with my other dolls.  If you’ve got a question about a particular aspect of these dolls, feel free to ask!
