“The Rise and Fall of Barad-dûr”

For the 2023 Beyond Bree Tolkien Calendar, I extended my watercolour of Sauron building the Dark Tower to show what it may look like in the Fourth Age. I’m currently working on a second painting for this calendar, which will show the planting of the mallorn in the Shire.

“I’ve put this off for far too long...” - Bilbo Baggins

At long, long last, here it is. The largest, most complex, and most challenging build I have ever constructed. The foreboding fortress of the Lord of the Rings himself, Barad-Dur, or Lugbúrz in Black Speech. This monstrosity took four days of nonstop building, and two more weeks of refurbishing and decorating. This model is massive, it will take more than one, at least three (including this one) posts to fully explore.

This was NOT a MOC, I did not build this using my own imagination. The interiors are my own design, but the majority of the build is built according to instructions. I purchased the instructions online, and you can too! The store is called Brickstruct (here’s the link)

To purchase the build simply message the seller at the email address listed on the page and state your interest. Do be warned, though, the instructions are $40 (a more than fair price for what you get) but parting together the build can be tedious and costly, with my personal estimate landing somewhere around $700. That is due, however, to my poor handling, I did not keep a comprehensive list or record so I ended up ordering multiples of parts. Not to mention I underestimated how many parts I had in my own collection, leading to me ordering parts I didn’t need and not ordering parts I did need. I would suggest at last a basic system to record what parts you have vs what parts you need, and some patience while building. But at the end of it all, you are greeted with an absolute monster of a build, something I can’t ever imagine LEGO doing to the same scale.

As aforementioned, I will make separate posts delving into the model itself, but needless to say, it is a cornerstone of my Lord of the Rings collection and a highlight of my Lord of the Rings collection.

Dulgabeth is Mouth of Sauron from The Lord Of the Rings Online MMORPG. He is is one of the Gúrzyul, Black Númenóreans given indefinite lifespans by Sauron. He is the Mouth of Sauron and the Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dûr. Dulgabêth is not the name he was born with, for that has long been forgotten.

After his master's demise, Dulgabêth titles himself "Sauron's Heir" and schemes to unite Mordor under his rule. Here's he without his helmet mask.

Nioniel is a OC from @meepsthemiqo(aka hoppystar)' s fancomic " The Only Star in Gorgoroth" .

In an act of passive aggression and chronic existential boredom, the Witch-king goes around to all the tapestries and paintings in Barad-dur and moves them so they are just slightly off center. This causes great annoyance to Sauron, who Must Have Order At All Times. Whenever the Dark Lord sees a crooked portrait or tapestry, he flies into a rage and has to stop everything he was doing so that he can make everything right again.

These pranks have been going on for years, but Sauron never suspects the Witch-king. Instead, he is convinced that the orcs are the ones behind all the shenanigans.

Took a break from working on the Hobbit Hole because I kept miscounting stitches to do the sassy Eye of Sauron. I never get to use such vibrant colours on my other projects so that bright orange was probably the best part of the whole thing.

The pattern I purchased online from CryptidStitch (link leads to their shop) with a few very minor modifications.
