February 7, 2024 - Brown-breasted Barbet (Pogonornis melanopterus)
These barbets are found in woodlands, gardens, the edges of forests, and other areas with trees, often near rivers or roads in parts of Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Somalia, and Tanzania. They feed on insects, as well as fruits, including figs and berries, capturing prey in flight or picking food items from leaves and branches. Nesting from November to June, as well as in August, they usually breed in groups of up to seven birds. They may nest in dead trees, though there are no detailed descriptions of their nests.

Sketch before bed tonight. I've been reading a lot about Barbet following the historic first BIS for the breed this past weekend!
I drew some very pretty curls earlier today but just wanted to see what my hand would do tonight. Really like the furnishings on the end of the ears and around the nose. What do you think?

September 13, 2023 - Black-spotted Barbet (Capito niger)
Found in northeastern South America, these barbets live in a variety of forested habitats, sometimes near rivers or coasts. They probably eat mostly fruit, along with some nectar and arthropods, like closely related species, and sometimes join mixed-species flocks. Males perform courtship displays involving fluttering flights, singing, and head and tail movements. Pairs excavate nesting cavities in trees where females lay clutches of three or four eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks.
