the thing keeping me with b*rbie at this point is the fact that I don’t know what I would do otherwise. I genuinely have no idea what I would do. it’s been my focus and frankly the basis of my personality for 8 whole years at this point, that’s almost 1/3 of my life, and that’s just the movies. the dolls have been with me for like... 20 years. literally what do I do with my life without her? how can I leave her behind? but also, how can I keep sinking my energy into something that isn’t making me happy anymore?

b*rbie talking about sustainability is so hypocritical it can’t even be funny. like in-universe she lives in that energy-sucking smarthouse and she wants to talk about unplugging electronics? excuse me? and in our universe m*ttel creates so much plastic waste in so many ways but especially contributing to the blind box/surprise doll trend, and even if they’re trying to move to recycled plastics, you still did all of that in the first place. you did that and for what? for the money, right? you don’t care, you never cared, all you care about is money and you think that doing this will make you different money. it’s nightmare it’s a full fucking nightmare

For the birthday spoilers ask: are elves different from fairies/faeries?
Birthday spoilers!
Note: Also spoilers for, like, everything, including After and the end of my verse.
Elves are actually the ancestors of fairies (and mermaids)!
They have a super long history (that I mostly haven’t filled in yet bc honestly I don’t have to unless it comes up), but here are the bullet points:
The planet was originally called Utopia. (I’m thinking about changing this, but as of now, this is correct.)
Around 200,000 years ago, elves already had a society more advanced than our current one, and started to go and explore space. (Having magic helps in this regard.)
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod were among those who went out there, in a ship of their own design, but they weren’t really interested in colonizing. They wanted to figure out where magic comes from and what the limitations are, that kind of thing.
The elves had a space empire spanning across 4 galaxies, but overextended themselves and overestimated their ability to keep ahold of all their colonies, so it fell apart. (This is the beginning of the intergalactic society seen in SLA.)
Elves stop going into space bc what’s the point. Been there, done that, etc. I mean, some probably still would, but there’s no longer a concerted effort to go out there and colonize or anything.
Around 11,000 years ago, Briony broke the universe.
This also broke Utopia itself, naturally, and led to a series of cataclysmic events that ended with a few elves escaping to Earth and other places, and when the planet finally kind of settled there was a massive storm that flooded the world. Like, Waterworld level flooding, the land still above water is quite a small area.
Elves were already familiar with genetic engineering and body modification, in part bc they had been mingling with aliens for quite a long time, so the responses to the flooding basically fell into two camps: Those who wanted to figure out a way to navigate the parts of land still above water, and those who wanted to give up on land entirely and just live in the water. These camps eventually became fairies and mermaids, respectively. (And there are some outliers who kinda went between land and sea, or didn’t give themselves wings, or whatever, but the majority of elves did.)
(”Our fair Utopia” -> “Our Fairytopia”)
The elves’ magic, which was now fairies’ and mermaids’ magic, became weaker over time in part bc they were focusing so much on maintaining their modifications, and partly bc their connection to the source magic thru the UD was messed up.
Around 3,000 years ago, the first fairies and mermaids crossed over to Earth. I’ve gone back and forth on why, whether Fairytopia is still experiencing repercussions from being broken, if there was a conflict and they were trying to get the hell out of dodge, or what. But there was some catalyst there.
So, to summarize, elves are different... but also kind of the same, since they’re an ancestral form. They don’t look super different, they just don’t have wings (or tails). That is, elves like Briony who were around 11,000 years ago, bc the old elves like WBN from 200,000 years ago look more like grey aliens; they modified themselves heavily during their imperial period, as they met different alien species, either for aesthetic purposes or bc they wanted to interbreed. I’m considering giving the two kinds of elves different names to differentiate them, but I can’t decide what to call them, and WBN are the only ones of the old type left anyway so maybe it doesn’t matter.
I hope that all makes sense! But yeah that’s why I sometimes talk about Fairytopia being a post-post-apocalyptic society. Bc they are. Many times over actually lmao.

Second Question woop-woop!: Why and how does Chelsea have these amazing, literally world/reality changing powers, and is she immortal like Joey? If so, has she and Joey (and Damian?? maybe??) ever met?- That PCS Anon
Birthday spoilers!
Note: This is like, the end of my Barbieverse. So, if you don’t want to be disappointed know what the whole thing is leading up to, skip this lol.
This is going to get really esoteric, so please forgive me, but this is endgame stuff so... it can’t be helped.
Short answer for Chelsea’s powers: Because the Brilliant Echo universe is/was/will be broken, and is held together by a series of paradoxes, and Chelsea’s powers are one of those paradoxes.
The long answer: The universe was broken around 11,000 years ago (from the present time), when an elf named Briony made psychic contact with a being known as a Universe Dweller. (The strange mountain in the background of SLA.)
Tumblr media
Universe Dwellers are alive... in a way, but not in a way that any being can really comprehend, and are found in pairs in galaxies, each existing on separate planets on opposite sides of the galaxy. The presence of a UD brings life to such a planet. It also regulates magic in the universe, as one planet in the pair will have magic (such as Fairytopia), while the other will not (such as Earth). The reason for this is that UDs are like... scabs on the wounds between reality and the Land of Nod. They’re a nexus of all cosmic knowledge and power, meant to let magic out on one side of a galaxy and keep it in on the other side to keep the universe in balance.
Anyway, Briony mentally reaching into that nexus for the literal tiniest fraction of time imaginable and actually succeeding broke the entire universe. The UD itself had no way to warn her about this, inasmuch as it could comprehend or care about such a thing, but since she didn’t deserve to die (she was killed instantly), she was brought back to life (also instantly). So now Briony exists in a strange limbo between life and death, bc “alive” to a UD is not the same as “alive” as she was before. She contains all knowledge in the universe, and experiences all of time at once, the same as UD, and as a result she is unable to communicate with anyone. (She’s my most fucked up oc, and I love her SO much. Poor thing.)
Obviously... the universe did not actually end 11,000 years ago, despite being broken, bc the solution was actually in the future, and that solution was... the dreamscape, which facilitates all the other paradoxes while also being a paradox in and of itself, because it existed before it was created.
Because Chelsea created the dreamscape. At some point in the future, I haven’t decided when, the Land of Nod is actually destroyed, and Chelsea recreates it... which, due to the way time works in the dreamscape, means that it’s actually being created for the very first time.
So, why does Chelsea have powers? Because she created half the universe, so she needs her powers to create half the universe, and she needs to create half the universe to have her powers at all. This is also the same reason that Briony is able to break the universe: She touched the UD bc she was going to do it bc the UD needed to be created in the first place bc Briony touched the UD... Etc. Just paradoxes on paradoxes, holding the universe together.
(I know it’s confusing, but I hope that does make some semblance of sense. It’s very much supposed to be a cycle with no real beginning and no real ending.)
As for Joey and Damian, I could see them eventually being part of the Dream Team. They’re actually quite a bit younger than Chelsea (she was born in 2002, and they were born in 2020, so 18 years apart), so even by the time Chelsea starts to be aware of her place in the universe, ca. 2027, they’d still be kids. However, once they’re all a bit older and moving about in the cosmos, I could see it happening. I’m not sure when it would be, or what they would do, but they definitely should be in her orbit. (I’m still trying to connect disparate pieces of my ‘verse, now that I’m moving into the future parts, bc they’ve all been pretty separate.)

I have two big multi-part questions that I can think off the top of my head, but I'll put them in two sperate asks, with this being the first: How and why is Joey immortal? How does he find out? How does *Damian* find out, and why does Joey keep him around? (I feel like I've asked the last part before, so apologies if I have DHHFHSHFH)- That PCS Anon
Birthday spoilers!
Note: This is also spoilers for After and The Tower. (I know that doesn’t sound like it makes any sense, but just trust me.)
Simply put: Joey is immortal bc of his biological parents.
Tumblr media
To make a long story short, Reina and Robin Goodfellow (also called Puck) are elves who fled from their home planet about 11,000 years ago after a cataclysmic event. They ended up on Earth, along with another elf named Nik, not really planned but holes were opening up in reality and Puck pulled Nik and Reina into one with him, ostensibly to save their lives. They stuck together for awhile bc Earth was crazy compared to their homeworld but eventually parted ways and never saw each other again.
Now, elves are not totally immortal. They can naturally live for about 1,000 years, but can extend their lives with magic if they wish. The problem is... there is no natural magic on Earth, so they didn’t have a lot of options if they wanted to continue living. Reina turned to blood magic, essentially stealing youth and vitality from others. Puck took refuge in the metaphysical center of the planet, which does have magic, technically. And Nik honestly didn’t care to live forever but he ended up traveling north and meditating and he basically lives off of sunlight/starlight and being in tune with the universe, he’s the most chill of the 3 of them and just wants to live in peace. He ended up settling down and starting a family with a human. He and his family, eventually known as the Clausons, strive to do good in the world. (If you’re thinking, is Nik Santa? Or at least a Santa? Well... 🎅)
So, Joey has a good percentage of elf blood, which would have him living for several hundred years on its own. But since one of his great-grandfathers is a watch, that’s what makes him truly immortal, since he inherits a watch’s inability to be injured, and the fact that they don’t need to eat or sleep to stay alive. (Unlike Arsenio, Joey can eat and sleep, but he doesn’t have to.)
Joey doesn’t know anything about his biological family, because Robina gave him up specifically to hide him from Marisol, so that Marisol wouldn’t use him like she used Robina, and thus it was a closed adoption. He loves Merliah and Kylie, and doesn’t really have any interest in seeking his biological family, bc he doesn’t feel like he’s missing anything from them, and he figures that they gave him up for a reason, so they probably wouldn’t want to see him, anyway.
Damian, on the other hand, is very interested. He kind of has a complex, bc he knows he was conceived accidentally, and they wanted Joey. (Merliah had reservations about being pregnant, which is why they decided to adopt.) I don’t know how much he would ever know about this, but from my own childhood, I know sometimes you just feel things even if nobody will say it outright.
Obviously, Damian can’t exactly... bully Joey into finding out about his birth family, bc A) Joey cannot be swayed, and B) Damian is a lot smaller than him. So Damian says they should at least find out what Joey can do, bc then maybe they can kind of guess what his birth family was like, at least, bc Joey is... just a little bit odd.
It’s not that he acts out in any way, or even does anything very unusual. He’s very obedient and well-behaved. He eats his vegetables and does his chores and goes to bed when told. He’s very mellow.
To Damian, who’s full of rage, this is unfathomable, but Joey just shrugs it off. He likes to help others and do what he’s told and doesn’t really see any reason to rebel, and never has. What he can’t shrug off is the fact that he can do magic.
Of course, his grandpa on Merliah’s side is Rip, who has spent a good chunk of his life studying magic. And Rip can tell that Joey’s not a mermaid, a fairy, not part mermaid, not part fairy, not any kind of fairy or pixie or merrow or any kind of being that Rip has ever seen. So Rip is also intrigued by Joey, but Merliah and Kylie have said that Joey is not to be studied, not that Rip would ever treat his own grandkid like that, but just like, leave well enough alone and don’t poke at him, and if Joey ever wants you to help him figure himself out, he will come to you when he is ready.
Long story short, Damian pokes at Joey until he decides to ask Grandpa Rip. Joey isn’t curious about it, but Damian is, and he wants Damian to be happy (and also stop bothering him), so like, why not.
So, at that point, they start trying to figure out what exactly Joey can do. He can already breathe underwater after studying his moms’ mermaid form, and he can imitate his Uncle Odie’s fire powers exactly when he tries. And after going on like this for awhile, the question quickly becomes what CAN’T Joey do? bc elves had/have a lot of magic compared to any given fairy or mermaid, and watches are at a comparable level. It’s not nearly at Chelsea’s level (or even WBN’s, bc they are an even older, more powerful kind of elf than Reina, Puck and Nik were, plus they were sitting in one spot absorbing magic for 200,000 years), but basically more powerful than Rip has ever seen, and he spent 17 years in Fairytopia specifically seeking out the most powerful magic known to fairykind/mermaidkind in an effort to get home.
At this point, Joey changes his mind and decides he doesn’t want to continue, bc he doesn’t want to feel strange among his family, and Rip doesn’t push the issue bc he’s frankly a little scared about who or what is out there that could be that powerful, and wherever Joey came from, he doesn’t want to know about it.
Damian’s mad bc he is more curious than ever, but now Rip is on the side of hey don’t push it bc like god help us if Joey turns against us (except not in those words but just like silently thanking god that Joey is the nicest kid in the world without a malicious bone in his body).
Anyway, they kind of go back and forth like that as they grow up, with Damian always trying to figure out what Joey’s limits are, and Joey just not engaging bc he is not interested. And eventually Joey does, quite calmly, ask Damian what the hell his problem is and like can’t you just let this go already and Damian basically is like how can you say that when you have all this power and you don’t do anything with it? And Joey’s like what am I supposed to do exactly and Damian’s like you have to do something and Joey’s like fine if it will make you happy, I’ll do something with my magic. I’ll save the world or something and then you have to leave me alone. And Damian’s like sure, deal. Joey doesn’t really want to play superhero (which is an option by the time he’s grown), but he figures the right thing will call to him when the time is right, and until then, he’ll just hang out and try to convince Damian to chill the hell out.
So basically, Damian comes with him bc he was an annoying younger brother (by 5 months) until Joey said fine. (If Damian sounds like a dick, well, not all my ocs are nice lol that would be boring.) And figuring out immortality would really be a matter of time, with Joey not aging even past the age when fairies and mermaids start to age (around 125).
I think Joey might look into his biological family once his immediate family (parents, grandparents, cousins) all died, so he wouldn’t feel like he was betraying them, but that’s several hundred years in the future and I haven’t decided how that goes yet. But we’ll see!

Will Erika’s children have powers? (For the spoiler asks)
Birthday spoilers!
The short answer is ‘no’ but the longer answer is... they might?
Erika has a different kind of magic than Anneliese, and it’s much more passive. Her parents were from the Land of Nod, which I explained a bit about here, but basically it’s a fairytale realm, so Erika essentially has... stories in her blood, I guess you could say. It’s why she ended up being in Princess and the Pauper, she’s just... a part of a story, from birth. (PatP takes place in reality, on Earth, but the fairytale magic comes with the people who cross over. It’s how I get away with having some fairytales play out on Earth like Rapunzel and 12DP.) Erika’s only real power is... looking like Anneliese.
So, if any of Erika’s children have any sort of powers, it would be related to a story that they were in, if that makes sense. Like, if her daughter were part of the Princess and the Pea, she would be super sensitive, that kind of thing. I haven’t decided if I want all of them to inherit stories, partly bc I gave her 8 children and that’s a lot of stories, and honestly, beyond The Tower, I don’t know if I really want to keep writing these characters, since I have so much else to do, and I’ve spent so long with them.
Her eldest son was initially going to be a part of a Jack in the Beanstalk-esque scenario, but I’m debating if I want to keep that part, and also I changed his (nick)name from Jack, but I might go back to it bc I like the Jack in the Beanstalk thing... But I’m not sure if it still makes sense, since I’ve changed my mind about what I want to do for The Tower so many times.
I’m sorry if this answer is disappointing, but behind the scenes I have so much up in the air it’s embarrassing asdkjnsdf

I know this is a kinda obvious question but do Chelsea's powers allow her to breathe in space? Also, how do her powers activate? I'm guessing they activated after someone told her she had them?- That PCS Anon
I’m gonna answer this in the spirit of birthday spoilers! So, spoilers under the cut.
Technically, I just draw Chelsea in space bc it looks cool. But since she can rewrite reality so suit her, I think she could breathe in space if she wanted to. Or she could make it so that she didn’t have to breathe in the first place. But I don’t know if she would, at least initially, bc she’s really skittish about the whole “wait you think I’m basically a goddess??” thing. Maybe later on when she’s more comfortable, she would do that, since she does end up having to go to space. But she does have access to a spaceship so it also might not really come up.
Her powers have actually always been active, but she used them subconsciously when she was young, and she used them less as she got older, since her power basically amounts to... I guess imagination is a good word for it. I haven’t decided on exactly how I want to describe it, bc that doesn’t sound powerful enough to me. But she does have the most powerful imagination in the Barbieverse, hands down, bar none, and it allows her to do... basically anything she can imagine. So when she was “imagining” the worlds seen in Kelly Dream Club and Dreamtopia, she didn’t realize that she was actually creating them in the Land of Nod.
The Land of Nod is basically a dreamscape/fairytale land that’s on the flipside of reality. It’s where some movies/parts of movies take place (all the others are in reality):
Nutcracker (Parthenia)
Swan Lake
Diamond Castle
Pink Shoes (Ballet World)
12 Dancing Princesses (Magical World)
Magic of Pegasus
Island Princess
The Land of Nod is the source of all imagination, dreams, and magic in the Barbieverse. Stories repeat there endlessly (hence Swan Lakes in both the titular movie and Pink Shoes, same with Nutcracker, etc). It can be influenced by other people, but the only one who can outright create things there is Chelsea, at least as far as the ancient elves Wynken, Blynken, and Nod have ever been able to tell, and they’ve been hanging out there for approximately 200,000 years. (At least, from the time they left reality. I haven’t decided how much time actually passed in Nod, bc time is... malleable there and it doesn’t necessarily correlate.)
Wynken, Blynken, and Nod believe themselves to be the first to actively cross over into the dreamscape, and so they named it after themselves--its full name is “Land of Wynken, Blynken, and Nod,” but this gets shortened to just “Land of Nod.” (The names Wynken, Blynken, and Nod are actually taken from the poem of the same name by Eugene Field, btw.)
Anyway, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod have spent all that time in the dreamscape trying to basically figure out how the universe works, how magic works, how to shape the universe any way you want, etc. But they don’t know how to do what Chelsea does, so they decide to talk to her, but it takes awhile for them to make contact bc A) they have not been people in so long they don’t really know how anymore, and B) even they know that approaching a little girl is a bad idea. So while Chelsea grows up, they try to figure out how to be people again, and they’re just barely pulling themselves together by the time they notice that Chelsea’s imagination seems to be... stagnating? Fading? And while they would have waited awhile longer, they were real nervous about the possibility of her just... giving up, so they reached out through her dreams initially, and then met her on Earth. (After giving her the heads up that they were coming, but it’s still quite a shock to see people you saw in a dream show up in real life.)
They take the human names Wayne, Blayne, and Ned Fisher, and start hanging out with Chelsea and telling her about magic and the Land of Nod, and basically everything they know, and their theories about her, bc they’ve given up on their quest for power since they know they’ll never measure up to her, so instead they’re just going to make sure she gets all the support she needs to do... basically anything she wants.
But to make all that long explanation very short, her powers were always active, but once she started doing it on purpose, and had knowledge behind it, and theories in the back of her head, they changed, and she got more control, and could start doing some serious stuff. Or I guess will do since that’s the future part of the verse (2027 onwards).
