favorite platonic relationships: bonnie bennett, caroline forbes and elena gilbert “Promise me something, both of you. Write it all down. Everything that you accomplish in your lives, every crush, when you fall in love, when you start a family, every time you fantasize about wanting to kill Damon. Write it down so that one day when I wake up, I can read all about my best friends’ lives and feel like I was there.”

As someone that genuinely loved bonlena’s friendship in season one. When you compare bonlena to other girl duos in that era like Brooke/Peyton, Blair/Serena or even just comparing them to Elena/Caroline. All of these girl duos have issues. Which is normal. But, the issue is that Bonnie never gets to vocalize how Elena or Caroline hurts her directly or indirectly. She accepts these things and just goes off-screen. Bonnie very rarely blames anyone or calls anybody out she just says what she disliked. Most fans claim they’ve disliked Bonnie due to her season 1-2 personality and only find her likable due to s6. “Bonnie’s independent that’s why….” Independence doesn’t meant no one should care lol.
Caroline has the privilege to tell Elena off. She thinks Elena’s selfish? Thinks Damon is a bad influence on her? She says that. Bonnie never once does that. She doesn’t label Elena or Caroline the root of all things. When she attempts to be more reserved it only happens off-screen. When it comes to Caroline, she’s taking up for her and still too in-tuned with her own life at points to notice Bonnie’s struggles.
Bonlena can’t discuss their issues and really doesn’t anymore once Caroline fills in that space as Bonnie is pushed out the plot outside her magic. When Abby is turned, Elena wanted to go an apologize. Caroline refused it, we get the line about how Bonnie is always the one hurt but very little done on Bonnie’s thoughts after that. This also applies to how the writers wrote Elena to revolved around the Salvatore’s.
Anyways i say all of this to say I don’t get how some people can label Bonnie fans or their work just Caroline or Elena bashing when their giving her feelings and a plot that has nothing to do with Caroline or Elena. Like you don’t think there should’ve been some discussion on how her friends didn’t notice she was dead all summer? Or when Elena tried to kill her? How Caroline is often wrapped up in dating drama to notice her bestfriend having a bad day? Bonnie deserves having a voice too.

How would Elena and Caroline react to Klaus and Bonnie? Bonnie’s their bestfriend.
Negative at first. This isn’t an anti-Elena or Caroline moment at all. I do think they'd warm up to Klonnie in their own way. Let me explain.
Elena’s arc is about grief, keeping those close to her and finding a way to be happy again after lost. So, in return Elena grows attached to people that essentially wouldn't leave like vampires or Bonnie. I'm going off S1-2 was the strongest that Bonnie and Elena were. They shared secrets with each other, texted every day, did cheerleading, sleepovers, and viewed each other as sisters. Elena wanted Bonnie to be close with Stefan because they both were important to her. When Elena is upset, she goes to Bonnie for comforting. When Bonnie is hurting Elena wants to be there for her. The writing doesn't allow that though. Elena certainly doesn't like being cut off from Bonnie or finding out she's hurt. Elena loved that Beremy was a thing. It kept Bonnie close and her brother happy. Now include everything that goes on in S1-3. My point is Elena is very dependent on Bonnie.
Caroline's issues with Elena were insecurities and projection but even then, when DE became a thing, she didn't mind frequently bashing their relationship as she saw fit. Keeping Elena informed on who she was dating context does matter because the series ignores how Damon treated her. But with that in mind, she'd do the same about Klaus just venting about how terrible he is and how much of a problem he creates for everyone. The series doesn't consider Bonnie someone Caroline has to be jealous of for obvious reasons but if Bonnie was being given a great amount of attention, I do think those patterns could repeat with Bonnie. In general, Caroline does exist in her own world but still depends on or expects Bonnie to be there. We've seen Caroline venting to Bonnie often.
Klonnie would be a lowkey thing for a while. Bonnie would feel conflicted in her feelings and trust for Klaus, she wouldn't take him seriously while keeping up the mentality that she has to be there for everyone. Klaus have to do way more than giving her gifts to win her over. Bonnie wouldn't try to make Klaus suddenly like her friends either. She wouldn't allow a relationship to persist if he's harming them. Klaus would be so determined on making Bonnie believe him. Adding in Klaus will claim he doesn't care if Bonnie bonds with his family but he's lying. She'd get closet to Kol and Rebekah in the meantime since they wouldn't go tell the MF about Klonnie imo. Bonnie would want to confide in her friends about her relationship as it grows. When it all does come out, I do think Elena would only once mention Jenna's death in an argument out of being hurt that Bonnie kept this secret for so long. Or not knowing where their friendship stands if Bonnie continues to be separated from her since she's been holding onto that secret relationship for who knows how long. Same, for Care completely I do think she'd slip up and imply once why would Klaus take an interest in Bonnie, that he's using her for magic or how it all is some bad idea. Which would be all fears Bonnie has had and wanted to share more than anything else, but I do believe once Elena and Caroline see how happy Bonnie is and lets her confide in them about her relationship, they would love that Bonnie is happy that's all that would matter to them. If she was happy, and getting the love back she was given then they're okay. Would they like Klaus for her? Nah, and certainly not going to enjoy getting used to not being so dependent on Bonnie cause Klaus would break that up.
To sum it all up they'd be negative and very critical at first still wouldn't like Klaus for Bonnie long-term. They may say the wrong things initially but they'd both apologize talk out why they said or feared things with Bonnie being with him. Most of the hurt would be not understanding why Bonnie didn't come to them about Klaus. Then they'd go interrogate Klaus demanding he'd treat her right. I can see Carolena stalking Klonnie on their dates just to see how this relationship was going. Bonnie would just have to catch her bestfriends up at a sleepover that's all.
Hope this helps!

Finally working on chapter 44 of Irresistible, hopefully I'll be able to finish it before I start working on the next AU-gust fic. The amount of Barolena in this chapter has me foaming at the mouth, can't wait to post this one.
P.S - Did not know Barolena watching Mean Girls would come up in this fic but, oh well.

Scarepair Rowboat: Barolena | Bonnie Bennett x Caroline Forbes x Elena Gilbert (The Vampire Diaries)
Caroline's smiling face greets Bonnie and Elena at the door. "Who's ready for horror Halloween movie night?"
It appears to be a rhetorical question; she ushers them both inside, ignoring their protests as they nearly spill the hot chocolates that she demanded they bring. In her words, the Mystic Grill just make it better than any homemade crap.
"It's all in the chocolate sprinkles and the hazelnut syrup," she informs them before taking a long sip of the cup Elena hands her. Her eyes close in a moment of bliss and she hums contentedly. "God, it's better than sex. Or blood."
"Two things you don't ever expect to hear in a sentence together," Bonnie remarks with an amused grimace at Elena, who laughs lightly.
Disappearing into the kitchen, Caroline calls back, "There are some snacks out on the table. I don't think we decided on which movie we were going to start with so I've just gone ahead and loaded up Hocus Pocus."
Bonnie and Elena move through to the sitting room to find that they've walked into the most luxurious movie theatre. The lights are off except for a lamp in the corner giving off a gentle, ambient orange glow. The TV mounted on the wall is paused on the starting screen of the movie, and the coffee table is completely loaded with bowls of various snacks, from three different flavours of popcorn to Bonnie's favourite packet of skittles and Elena's favourite miniature cookies.
Bonnie sniffs the air with furrowed brows. She turns to Elena. "Is it just me or... does it smell like fruit in here?"
"Kind of like berries," Elena agrees.
She nudges Bonnie to sit down and follows her. Immediately, Bonnie swipes a small handful of candy corn m&m's, pressing a finger to her lips for Elena to shush her giggling.
"Hey, Care," Bonnie calls through as Elena steals one from her palm and quickly pops it in her mouth before sipping her hot chocolate. "I thought you said it was a horror movie night."
"I did." Caroline reappears in the doorway, pointing at Bonnie when she raises her eyebrows pointedly at the TV. "Hey, Hocus Pocus really scared me as a kid. I always thought I was going to get, like, abducted by witches every Halloween."
"You still might," Elena jokes, nudging Bonnie's shoulder again. She steals another m&m from her palm, popping it into her mouth with a grin.
Caroline rolls her eyes and motions for them to budge up; she slides in beside Bonnie. Lips twitching with amusement, she also swipes an m&m.
"Well, I wouldn't mind so much now," she says. "Only if it's Bonnie, though." Leaning back, she then adds, "And for the record, there are more movies lined up after this. We're just starting with something not too scary to ease us into it, and then we're going to watch Jennifer's Body, then Freddie Vs Jason, and so on."
"Oh, good choice with Jennifer's Body," Elena says.
"As long as it's anything but IT, I'm good," Bonnie says.
There's a pause. Bonnie stops mid-munch of an m&m, another one halfway to her mouth as her eyes flick back up to Caroline's wary expression.
"No," Bonnie says.
"It's fifth on the list," Caroline confesses.
"Caroline! You know I hate clowns. Remember when you tried to make me watch season four of American Horror Story and I had nightmares for two weeks?"
By her expression, it's clear that that slipped her memory, somehow.
"It was pretty bad," Elena gingerly agrees. Getting in between the two of them when they're bickering can be a pretty bad idea, and taking a side is usually even worse than when she tries to play peacekeeper.
Still, she feels a need to jump to Bonnie's defence this time; she was the one, after all, who spent those two weeks keeping herself awake until five in the morning with Bonnie because she was too scared to sleep.
"Alright, alright!" Caroline grabs her phone and taps her screen a few times. "Done. IT is no longer on the list. Which means that we'll be going from Unfriended to Coraline, which I thought would be good somewhere in the middle to sort of give us a break from all the super scary stuff."
"Sounds good to me," Elena says.
Bonnie smiles gratefully at Caroline, gently nudging her shoulder. Really, she just leans into her side. "Me, too."

i said on another platform that it would’ve been nice if Bonnie separated herself from Elena after she tried to kill her in s4. Someone replied with how stupid my idea was and that it doesn’t make sense. Yes, Elena’s humanity was off, and she didn’t have a choice in turning that switch. I do agree! however, that didn’t change what she did try to do with the switch off. It only took her emotions out the situation not the action at hand. Elena in s6 even tells Caroline that turning your humanity switch off is a mistake.
But why is that idea of Bonnie having separation and agency in her own feelings so negative? It never should’ve been a point where Bonnie is the only one giving while the others aren’t doing the same. Elena just gives a quick apology and Bonnie says she understands it wasn’t her and she herself hasn’t been who she is in a long time. But, frankly that isn’t enough. If Bonnie took some time to step back and reflect this also could’ve kept her from dying later on in s4. She wasn’t fighting to bring Jeremy back for herself, as his girlfriend. She only did it for Elena, there was no input in on Bonnie’s emotions and that’s the problem there!
s1-2 Bonnie is deemed annoying, and judgemental by all for her thoughts with vampires. Not only do fans ignore her trauma then… but I can’t stress enough how many times I’ve seen people claim they never liked Bonnie after how she stepped away from Caroline during her transition. Then argue that Bonnie never would’ve treated Elena the same. Bonnie gave Caroline a promise, and never had to fulfill that promise yet she certainly didn’t mind fulfilling what she told to Caroline to Elena AFTER Elena attacked her first. It was not expression then, Bonnie said she knew what she was doing. She referred to Elena then as a shell of her bestfriend meaning she didn’t see her as Elena anymore.
This goes back into s3 and how heavily the plot goes to push the idea that Bonnie’s life and or feelings is always secondary to everyone else. We get a line about how she’s always the one hurt but never an emotional moment from Bonnie herself. Tbfh, Bonnie should’ve stepped back in s3 then but carrying on. Anyways having Bonnie step away and letting others actually apologize or try to fix things with her would’ve been great.
The only reason people are so quick to attack Bonnie fans for saying she should’ve stepped away or Elena/Damon/Stefan/Caroline whomever should’ve apologized or worked for her forgiveness, treated her the same…is because a lot of you don’t want to picture Bonnie in a space where she is not benefiting everyone else. It’s suddenly OOC for you to fathom that maybe other people should treat Bonnie with the same respect. I love Bonnie’s loyalty and protectiveness over her friends, but she deserves the same.
Seeing how Elena could’ve made her own amends would’ve been much better than a quick apology.

I’m kind of tired of seeing “the bad friend” comments in fandom. Specially TVD. Idk how or when, but people put this huge emphasis on friendship, and convinced themselves that friendships are supposed to be 100% supportive, 100% loving, and 100% everything. When everyone knows that nothing is ever 100%, so why should friendships?
At some point, Bonnie, Caroline and Elena were all “bad” friends to eachother. Their relationship could be rocky sometimes. But there’s no doubt they love eachother, atleast from where I’m standing. It wouldn’t be realistic at all, if they were always 100% with eachother. Why? Because they’re human! (Somewhat). They’re gonna have doubts, fears, goals that’s different from the others. And because of that, they’re gonna disagree.
