Music(ology) headcanons! Part 1

My headcanons fall under two main umbrellas: stuff that goes along with canon as is, and stuff that works specifically in the AU that I and a friend have been working on together for the past 9 months. I wanted to put the AU specific stuff in this post also but this post is long enough as is, so this post will just be based on the headcanons that I think are canon compliant.

I believe there is a subtle distinction between Music and Musicology.

Music is as primordial as Light and Shadow. If Light is the magic of order and existence as it currently is, and Shadow is the magic of chaos and change and entropy, the Music is the magic of creation, of making the new. Music is the harmonizing force that keeps Light and Shadow in balance.

(Quest: The End of Days, the quest at the very end of Empyrea in which the Wizard becomes the Divine Paradox)

Meanwhile Musicology is Music as mortals such as Maulwurf von Trap and the Old One are able to study and use, the way that all of the 7 main schools and the Astral schools are the subforms of Light magic most ordinary people can learn.

Because it does attempt to tap into such primal magic, Musicology is often unstable, which is why Maulwurf is so destruction-prone.

(Quest: A Foundry Most Foul. Maulwurf used Musicology to defend himself from some Schismist soldiers... with extra consequences.)

However, with the right tools, even mortal Musicology can be INCREDIBLY powerful. The Old One was able to use his World Synthesizer to weave pieces of Spiral Worlds together, a smaller version of Bartleby singing the Song of Creation to weave all the worlds of the Spiral together into one cohesive universe after the First World split apart.

(Quest: Something Wicked That Way Goes, the quest where the Wizard goes to unformed Novus)

Note now music is lowercase here despite Nothing being capitalized. The music isn't divine Music, but rather Musicology, because Novus was made out of Dasein and the Old One's World Synthesizer in particular.

So, Musicology as the mortal form of Music. How does it manifest, aside from Maulwurf's arson and the World Synthesizer?

I think some spells are inherently Musicological despite falling under the canon schools. I think @astral-schools put this well in this post of theirs + response to my tags:

Spells that use the ideas of (lowercase) music in their theming. The techniques, how they manifest, their animations.

I wanted to list out every Musicological spell ingame but unfortunately the list of every spell in the game is like 70% beastmoon spells (exaggeration) so I never get far in my deep dive before getting bored of combing through the spells. Off the top of my head, the following spells are Musicological spells to me:

Imp (an imp playing a fiddle causes the damage. The spell animation has music notes fly at you)

Satyr (a satyr plays the pan pipes to heal you)

Earthquake (vibrations through the ground. music and physical vibration/frequencies go hand in hand to me. physics!)

Myth Imp (same as with regular imp)

Snake Charmer (the charmer uses their song to control the snake and make it deal damage)

Banshee (screams and noise as damage)

Sirens (sirens' songs are what lure sailors to their doom. Music notes fly at you in the animation as well)

Every Karamelle spell (Maulwurf says that the spell is made by the musicology syncopating with our inherent magic. Syncopation is a musical term that refers to when a melody intentionally dances around the rhythm of the piece.)

Every Lemuria spell (because Lemuria was made with Musicology)

Every Novus spell (because, like Lemuria, Novus was made with Musicology)

In a sense Music and Musicology is somewhat similar to how we see Shadow magic in-game. Pure Shadow magic is divine and unstable (which is why we suffer Backlash when using the pure Shadow spells from Khrysalis), but other spells are Shadow-enhanced, using Shadow magic alongside one of the other 7 schools to keep it more stable.

Here’s a quick look at my wizard throughout her entire story in the spiral. More in depth under the cut <3

Edit: oopsie, added an arc 4 outfit. My pen just ran away with me ✨

So this is Kimberly before she got sent off to Ravenwood, when she was still running about Dun Dara and the Weirwood without a care in the world. The outfit isn’t based on any specific gear, but takes inspiration from the designs of the foxes all over Avalon. The boots are the Spellwright’s Druidic Boots and will be consistent throughout every design except the paradox, since I headcanon them to be shaped around her hooves, and therefore the most comfortable option with every outfit.

Upon arrival in Ravenwood, Kim was fitted with traditional wizard city robes. Here you can see her wearing the Fairy Cloak in dark green and gold, and the Daredevil’s hat in the same colours. Her wand is Gravewynd’s Earth Staff, one of my favourite early game wand models.

In Kimberly’s fifth year at Ravenwood, she was selected to compete in the spiral cup. Here, you can see her wearing the Vestment of Earth, to represent her school while she duels in Wysteria, and carrying the Wand of the Oasis (the life school’s wand for a spiral cup competitor). She did, however, refuse to wear the hood from the Wysteria uniform, and instead opted for the Widow’s bewitching hat in dark green and gold. She finds it easier to fit a beanie around her antlers than a hood.

After her success in the spiral cup, Kimberly was chosen in her seventh and final year at Ravenwood to represent wizard city in the immortal games. Here you can see her wearing the Vestment of Zeus’ Aegis, adopting the traditional dress of Aquila out of respect for the tournament. Her helmet is the Pixie’s Mask of Encanta, which might seem a bit strange. In my personal wizard101 canon, competitors in the immortal games are challenged to acquire or (ideally) make a helmet which best represents them to wear while they compete. Kimberly was raised by the Fae and has a strong connection to life and trees, so this helmet was perfect for her. The wand is the Aquilan Velite Lance, which was gifted to her as a congratulatory gesture for winning the tournament.

One thing Kimberly enjoyed about the magical tournaments far more than just competing in them was teaching and coaching other students. With that in mind, she moved to Wysteria after she graduated from Ravenwood and began to teach the young wizards from every world how to duel. Here, she’s not wearing any sort of helmet or hood, since she finds it more helpful for the students if they can see her face. The hairstyle is “The Mists Dun Dara” as a tribute to her homelands. The robe is the Greenwarden’s energetic shroud. The wand is the rosewood persuader. All Avalon-sourced gear to make her feel more comfortable and at home.

This outfit is from around the time Kimberly was first recruited to aid the young wizard on their quest, so around the beginning of dragonspyre in arc 1. Like the previous outfit, the gear is all from Avalon. She wears the Spellwright’s Druidic Cowl and the Stag Lord’s Cape in green and gold. The wand is the sword of kings, although prior to acquiring it during the Avalon quest line, she was still using the Aquilan Velite Lance.

This outfit hails from the beginning of arc 3, when the schism first start to become a problem. She stole a schismist robe of the first and wears it around the arcanum to freak out the scholars. The helmet is the Burrower Helm of Ardor. The wand is Zander’s focussed staff. As the child of light and shadow, black and white streaks have begun to grow into her hair.

Ah yes, the scion of Bartleby. Here, Kimberly is wearing the Lively Liaison’s cloak, as per her promotion from Arcanum Initiate to Liaison. Much like when she competed in the spiral cup all those years ago, she refuses to wear the ridiculous hat issued by the arcanum and instead opts for the lofty alphoi mantle. Her wand is the Branch of the World Tree. I know it’s a bit odd to give her a level 45 wand at this point, but I thought it made sense since she is the Scion of the World Tree in question. With the advancement of her powers, the streaks in her hair have grown more noticeable. All this time channeling both light and shadow magic is bringing her closer to becoming the Paradox.

I think this one is pretty self explanatory. It’s the Paradox gear from the end of Empyrea, except I coloured it green instead of blue to represent Kimberly’s life magic. Her hair has completely grown out into the colours of the void. At the moment I don’t have a solid design for her in arc 4, but maybe I’ll work on that next.

I can’t believe I’m posting about Sonic Underground, but this is the Cringe App, so here are some random thoughts and headcanons:

Sonia has super strength parallel to Sonic’s super speed (Manic has no innate power, because life isn’t fair) and that should have been explored more. Like, outside of battle. Imagine all the training Lady Windimere must have put her through to act ladylike and demure and not accidentally break all the fragile expensive things around her. She casually carries her brothers and Bartleby all the time. Sometimes she squeezes them a little too hard when she hugs them. She reunites with Bartleby after a rough mission and effortlessly picks him, spins him around and throws him high into the air. She can arm-wrestle Knuckles as an equal. Someone else is working on a heavy robot or vehicle or something and Sonia is propping or holding it up for them. The van breaks down in a place they can’t stay in and she just sighs, tells her brothers to take out and carry everything they can, lifts the van over her head and starts walking. She grabs the scruff of Sonic’s neck with her fingers when he tries to run away to do something stupid and he runs in place, extremely annoyed. A very exasperated Cyrus tells her that she needs to stop hitting the door buttons so hard when she dramatically leaves after an argument (thank God the doors don’t have hinges to be ripped off of), because they can’t keep installing new ones. First Sonic wearing away the floors and heating the metal so much it could melt people’s shoes, now this? He does have a favourite triplet and it’s Manic. This isn’t the only reason, but it’s a big one.

Seriously, why didn’t the show remark more on how Manic doesn’t have a power? I guess his instrument giving him earth manipulation while the others just get lasers kinda makes up for it. Maybe super genes run in the royal family recessively. With all the stock episode plots they did, you’d think there’d be one where he felt inferior to his siblings for this reason and reaffirmed his worth by saving the day and rescuing them when they were both captured.

There really should have been a body swap episode. Here’s my pitch: tensions are running high between the siblings as they clash over their respective flaws and insecurities, when some magical shenanigans that tie into whatever Robotnik’s plan is switch their consciousnesses around. Sonic is in Manic’s body, Manic in Sonia’s and Sonia in Sonic's. Now, Sonia has been stressed lately feeling pressured to be the mature, responsible one and, with so much steam to let off, finds herself slipping into Sonic’s recklessness, impulsivity and cockiness. She can literally outrun all her problems… or so she thinks. The speed is liberating and intoxicating. Meanwhile, Manic, who was giving her shit at the start, realizes how much restraint Sonia needs to exercise to not cause more trouble than she fixes with her strength and that, while it definitely makes some things easier, having a superpower isn’t a cure-all and requires rules in itself. He gains a greater respect and appreciation for her, which enables him to remind her of the value of responsibility and caution when she runs off the deep end. Sonic absolutely hates not having any extraordinary abilities. At first his siblings think he’s just cranky because he can’t do awesome tricks anymore and has to have a normal person’s amount of patience. Averse to vulnerability as he is, he pretends that that’s the extent of it; but as his complaints shift from whining to self-abuse, it turns out that he can’t stand feeling this helpless. He’s never been this incapable before. It hurts. It takes him right back to the worst moments of his life, when he wasn’t fast enough to save his parents and uncle. Now he isn’t fast enough to save anyone. Keeping the cycle of empathy going after Manic talks her down, Sonia reflects on how amazing her new speed feels and what having had that power her whole life might have done to her self-esteem. She tells Sonic that his speed and usefulness don’t define him or his worth, and it’s okay to fail, need to go slow, make mistakes and have things that are just beyond you. Everyone does. She’s made some big mistakes herself just that day! What matters is the strengths you do have and how you use them. He’s done so much good, for all his flaws, and she and Manic love every part of him. Inspired, Sonic ultimately defeats Robotnik using his intelligence and leadership skills, with both his siblings using their new powers effectively and wisely to make the plan work. Once they switch back, they get in a similar unfortunate situation to the one that pushed their stress to the tipping point in the beginning, only now they take it in stride and deal with it together. Who am I kidding, the show wouldn’t have gone into that much character analysis and emotional depth. That’s why we need fanfiction.

Sonia has had a five-star privileged education; however, she must also unlearn all Robotnik’s propaganda and lies. Sonic has had a less thorough education, but presumably still a pretty good one and without any of the propaganda from moving in with Uncle Chuck onward. Manic has never been to school a day in his life. Think of the comedy you could get out of this arrangement. But also, is Manic illiterate? His reading and writing are probably significantly poorer than the others’, right? I headcanon he’s secretly insecure about his lack of formal education and occasionally teases Sonia for her “nerdy” advanced knowledge and makes fun of her when she doesn’t know something, in an effort to bring her down to his level.

Uncle Chuck is the triplets’ father’s brother, not of royal blood. My headcanon is that after Robotnik killed the king during the takeover, he agreed to go into hiding and cut ties with Aleena. He didn’t plan to have a role in her children’s lives until the Time arrived, but he wound up near enough Sonic’s home to visit and couldn’t stay away. He fondly told Sonic a great deal about life before Robotnik ruined everything and his birth parents, carefully omitting that they were the king and queen of course.

Sonic and Manic love to hear Mindy and Bartleby’s stories about Sonia before they met her. Though they are sad that the people who could tell such stories about them are all roboticized, so unless until a deroboticizer is invented there are parts of their early lives they don’t remember or fully understand that can simply never be told. In general, seeing Sonia with her old friends makes them feel Big Feelings. They’re glad one of them still has people from before in their life, but… it stings.

Where? Was the triplets’ grief?? Over their parents and guardians??? Where were the bonding moments about it? Where were the reminiscing scenes and Sonic explaining how he lost his old family twice and had to watch the first time? Where were the dramatic, heartwrenching confrontations with the roboticized guardians? FANFICS I NEED YOU

Manic likes to tinker with machinery when he’s bored, anxious, frustrated, guilty or even excited. Basically, he reaches a significant intensity of emotion and gets out the tools. He’s a fidgeter in general and always doing something with his hands - why do you think Farrell supported his impractical, attention-drawing hobby of drumming? A deroboticizor is a top priority ongoing project in the Resistance and if he’s in a really bad mental state, especially if he’s missing his dad, he can probably be found working tirelessly on one of the prototypes. Sleep, hunger, other people, the passage of time all mean nothing to him in that state. Sonic is the best at snapping him out of it because swap engineering with running and vigilantism and he essentially has the same coping mechanism, so he gets it in a way Sonia can’t. However, the sign that the hyperactive brothers are completely crushed and hopeless is that they lose their energy and motivation. If they’re notably still, slow and restrained in movement, they are Not Okay.

Sonia’s contrasting coping mechanism is to distract herself and her support system from her feelings with others’ business. That can manifest as criticizing someone else (constructively or destructively), wanting details on some aspect of their life, stoking drama and gossiping about them, or trying to fix their problems and/or make them open up about their issues. The last one is increasingly common since embarking on her character development. She’s always been a social butterfly and was a duck in water in the social perception, awareness and shrewdness-centric culture of the upper class; genuinely loves using those skills to help people so this is still in character on a good day; and is so at best charismatic and at worst overbearing that she can easily make you worry more about whatever she’s latched onto as a diversion, whether you agree with her stance on it or not. It takes a trained eye to catch when she’s actually neglecting herself. An indicator is that if her drive is the subconscious desire to avoid confronting her own feelings, she’ll be or become over time less tactful, patient and respectful of boundaries than usual, or resort to pettier topics in her desperation. Her brothers are the best at telling these behaviours apart from her healthy altruism and harmless theatrics and making her talk.

The medallions are royal family heirlooms. The rare, potent magical crystal they were carved from was a primary resource of Mobotropolis and the reason the capital was built there, their clean energy used for rapid magical/technological advancement that brought huge prosperity to Mobius, hence the paradise it was pre-Robotnik. Shards of them were incorporated in many royal regalia pieces. Through past political upheavals, disasters and thefts, most of the ornamental fragments have been lost. The medallions were made relatively recently to celebrate the dawn of a new golden age of art and culture; music was a key part of Mobian culture, so it was symbolically very fitting to give the rulers and protectors of the people instruments and weapons in one. It represented the ideal that they should give as much as they were able to take - even if they took up arms, they would at the same time have to preserve the life and spirit of Mobius through playing music. Hopefully that would tether them to their conscience. Plus, what’s more gloriously badass for a monarch than defeating your enemy by playing a rock cover of your national anthem? Robotnik’s relentless mining extracted the last of this precious resource years ago. He forgot the sustainable methods his predecessors used to harness the magic indefinitely because he can’t be bothered to understand magic, so he’s exhausted the power of every existing piece of the crystal besides the three medallions that have remained out of his grasp. He keeps trying to synthesize it, but you can’t synthesize ✨magic.✨ The sudden decline and loss of a longstanding reliable power source has made everyone reliant on Robotnik’s dirty energy. When the royal family retake their thrones, the medallions can either be given up and used to power Mobius or the very similar Chaos Emeralds used instead upon relearning the magic crystal energy harnessing techniques. Wouldn’t it be cool if discovering the Chaos Emeralds or recovering them from Robotnik was what turned the tide of the war? Sonic, Manic and Sonia going super and defeating Robotnik once and for all? Yes, yes it would.

Sonia is the oldest. Manic is the youngest. Sonic, as in the movies, is the middle child. Sonic and Sonia believe their birth order is important and she will never stop lording it over him, since before they got ahold of their birth certificates he’d assumed he was the oldest. Manic doesn’t care and wishes they would drop it.

Having been eager to help his uncle around the house and then needing to pull his weight in the Resistance, Sonic is a reliably good cook. He likes to learn more whenever he has the resources and time to experiment. Manic had no technical skills initially, not having had a kitchen and all, but is learning quickly under Sonic’s tutelage and has the sheer ingenuity to make a meal out of pretty much anything. Sonia can’t cook for shit. Sonic won’t give up on trying to teach her… but he’s certainly been tempted.

Sonic is afraid of fire due to the trauma of watching his old home burn down when he lost his parents (I put him at eight at the time, like Batman, and so he spends an almost equal number of years with his adoptive family and Uncle Chuck if he’s fifteen in the show). The smell of Sonia burning toast is enough to trigger flashbacks. Once Robotnik trapped the siblings in a burning building and he just froze, overwhelmed with terror; Sonia had to carry him to safety like a firefighter.

HIIII!!! my fic is totally my dump for spider related headcanons but here are a couple off the top of my head!

- spider saw mellori as a child not knowing she was the daughter of raven. one way or another thru prophecy or vision or just showing up thru somebody else (#posession)...i have a sillier differenter fic abt this interpretation of his mirage battle dialogue but its very sweet to think about hahahaha.

- ive always had underdeveloped thoughts abt how spider sees spiral peoples, especially as some of them (such as aztecans) descend directly from first world peoples rather than having been created theoretically after the titan war. but somehow spider's attitude (if he is to be believed) toward the yw i think indicates smth abt how he sees mortals in the spiral. he talks a lot of shop about how he doesn't care for any of the spiral or its peoples because his ex made it, that they're all weak or fodder but he is still grateful for what the yw had done for him even if it were prophesized. even if it were essentially "fate" at that point - spider recognizes that even if the yws actions to help him were done under coercion (from himself or others) they were still kind actions to him - they made him say that the yw was "one of their favorite things the spiral made" bc of that act. you wouldn't necessarily tell that to somebody you regard as a puppet that was bound to do those things anyway. (ofc he could've been sweet talking us but i choose the belief that theres part truth in it-) TLDR: spider ascribes a very interesting free will to certain spiral beings despite manipulating their fates massively over the years -- and i think that indicates more of a kind opinion toward the spiral than he lets on.

- my funniest spider hc is that he loves knitting and like fabric-related arts because he's good at it and better than raven. you just know the motherfucker is making sweaters in the husk

- his blood contains the purest form of shadow magic. a reason among other things that the chaos heart is one of the most powerful shadow artefacts in the spiral. theoretically other body parts of his are up there as well in terms of power. but luckily for him they arent removable.... as far as we know

- another reason why spider is fond of the yw is because spider himself was essentially the first wizard/first teacher of wizards - bartleby doesn't betray either witchiness or wizardry honestly i think "druid" is a legitimate camp to be in and bartleby is there -- raven is overtly witchy -- i think spider is in his own way incredibly wizard-y and mage-like. i always like to think he gave nuggets of his knowledge to the spider mages and guided their studies for a time...and the reason why people dont speak abt wizardrys root in spider is bc of raven's casting of him as ultimate evil in spiral mythologies. the role of guide to wizards is given rather ambiguously to bartleby instead...

- this hc is silly but. the divinities eat azoth. spider subsisted on that shit even in the black hole. idc that immortals don't need to eat i think it'd be funny if they ate azoth. consume ancient magics my boy

- tho raven and apider settled down in the husk, they still watch the yw but dont say nothin. spider COULD step in and narrate but why would he. all of arc 4 is so literally not his business at all ur on ur own wizard. however spider gossips about the yws goings on in lieu of being helpful literally at all.

- spiders favorite non-shadow schools of magic r storm and myth bc they're the most chaotic ::::)

- spider isn't taking to divorce therapy very well at all. 💋

anyway PLEASE tell me abt your interpretation/headcanons about the Old One, I desire disaster twink cthulu content o_o <- text version of TBH

I didn’t see this and then I was thinking for a long time and forgot but just. I have so many thoughts always that also tie into how I see Wizzy’s magic working? Also ask me ANY question about him always. I always have thoughts.

The big thing is just. The Old One is made of different magic than everyone else, in the most fundamental sense? Most everyone else, even Bartleby, is essentially a piece of one of the many melodies of the Song of Creation (or a remix of pieces, etc. basically, everyone’s their own special song) - that’s basically Canon isn’t it. Except the Old One - he came from before that right? So he’s made of totally different stuff. You can’t sing him into or out of existence or anything, his magic is different than the musimagical nature of. Well. Every being and world (outside of The Nothing - that’s why it could absorb him at all).

I think that’s really, truly, maddeningly isolating. Being the only speaker of a dead language, so to speak, while you have to learn the new language everyone else is speaking in and no one knows yours, would be really isolating, and it’s like that but for the laws of magic and reality. I think it’s traumatizing, and the way he deals with this fundamental difference in his reality vs everyone else’s is that huge huge enormous superiority complex. Everything was fine, until it was erased and replaced with worse versions. I’m not a freak or an isolated hold over from worlds past, I’m the last relic of something greater, etc etc, all that canon shit.

To me he’s sort of tragic though because he was, very genuinely, incredibly mechanically AND magically intelligent (he adapted to whole different style of magic after all) and was probably an incredibly powerful caster. I mean. To ME. He very well could’ve made a world and had it be something beautiful, with more time and practice. I think he could’ve been the man- err, octopus-made god he was trying to be (and kinda was, let’s be real he was like almost there like sooooooo close). But he actively refused to work with others, consider anyone else, and also he did wellllll maybe a liiiiittle experimentation on sentient beings. Because of the trauma and hubris combination. Hes a very Greek tragedy hero, but hey. Someone needs to squeeze him like a wet sponge.

I think the way an octopus has intelligence in different arms manifests with different, overlapping, occasionally contradictory stories and narratives of himself and the world that combine to shape the overall arc of his goals - more than the average person.The Old One is at least eight different Old Ones in a trench coat (not in a system way, it’s all the same person, all have that streak of self-centeredness and deep chasm of isolation), and sometimes the Horrific Monster from the Deep Old One scraps with the Benevolent King of All Worlds, He Who Heals with His Song, The Golden Old One - and so there’s a man who expects the loyalty of subjects like a king while reveling in their terror like a monster, etc. Also, when you’re in a story, everyone else becomes a tool in the narrative. He’s almost genre aware, but he’s mistaken in the thinking he’s the main character (he is to ME….) Maybe this is a common way of thinking, maybe it’s not, but it’s sort of how I picture him.

Also he’s a huge perfectionist, not because he believes his work won’t be good enough, but because he really does just have a deep, genuine appreciation for efficiency. There’s a reason he aligns with Markeybonian culture the way he does. His minimalism in the labs is genuine, and sky city is actually closest to the sort of place he’d prefer to live (but not that close, just…. Closest…)

He’s not only proficient in mapping and altering genomes, but also their counterpart, the component notes of the Song of Creation. To make the World Synthesizer, he was able to successfully document and translate the whole Song of Creation, then get the harmonic registers and melodies key for making a new world, not the whole spiral - but he could’ve made another duplicate Spiral if he wanted.

He only uses he/him because in most cultures that use he/him, that gender is the easiest and most efficient to navigate. In matriarchal societies and languages, The Old One uses she/her. It’s a utility thing. And a power thing.

He wants abs. And hair. He also things that the musimagically-generated physical humanoid form is a stupid artifact of the new world, and doesn’t want hair or abs. It depends on the narrative <3 there’s lots of genuine inner conflict there. He is not immune to being influenced by the stories and cultures of others.

I'd say don't actually headcanon any of the characters beyond the ages they seem to act like. Sonic, Sonia and Manic act at least teenagers, so they're teens. Dingo and Sleet not only work as bounty hunters, but both Dingo and Sleet have shown proficiency in piloting mutiple vehicles, and Dingo despite his naivete has shown considerable adult smarts that make both of them an adult in terms of design as well as characteristics. Bartleby, despite being a rich fop with his own place showcases a lot of immaturity and being unable to confront bad situations, making him around the same age as Sonia.

Also, I was constantly told to be 'convinced' of Dingo being a child, even though his characteristics and mannerisms in the series doesn't match that. On top of having a crush on Sonia, Dingo's:

Argued with Sleet about his paycheck

forced to stay behind suspicious areas so Sleet could reap the rewards

Showcases a loyalty with Sleet despite him being constantly cut out of conversation with Sleet and Robotnik

Is capable of being reasoned with, as shown in Sonic Tonic

Is just as much capable of telling Sleet where to stuff it, but most times prioritizes the mission over getting one over Sleet

I just think the anon that stated that Dingo is 'too much like a child' doesn't understand how actual children work, because as far as I can tell Dingo's quite capable of reasoning and having adult conversations with Sleet and Robotnik at points, and has not shown any remorse for his actions towards the triplets beyond wanting a paycheck.

Much better articulated than I what I tried to write.

The only argument I can see for "Dingo is a teen" is how he's kinda dumb, although it's a common trope. Duo of bad guys, one is a serious and "smart" leader while the other is a total buffoon. That trope has nothing to do with how old a character actually is.

It's all really down to interpretation and it's kinda weird how people will tell you you've interpreted something wrong simply because it doesn't line up with theirs, despite being no official statements on the topic.

Dating Loki and Bartleby

(I’m obsessed with these men)

- I think it’s important that you meet Loki and Bartleby before the whole “messiah thing” because regardless of how handsome someone may be, the minute they start talking about being banished from heaven; or start to spout out information only high level stalkers would know, is the minute a rational adult woman runs for the hills.

- But I’m getting ahead of myself, you don’t meet Loki and Bartleby until after they’ve become invested in your life.

- It all starts with a chance encounter, or rather, a chance glance to be more exact. Bartleby spots you as he’s going about his day and while he passively notes that you’re pretty, it’s you that interests him: your life, the way you seem to think or act, the things you do, the way you treat people and the way people treat you. You may think that your life is boring and monotonous, and it may very well be, but there’s something about it that just …keeps him watching.

- Bartleby doesn’t usually “take” to people: he enjoys watching little entertaining splices of their lives but he’s never attached himself to a single story like he’s done with you.

- Initially, it’s what's currently going on in your life that has him paying particular attention to you. It might not be anything revolutionary but there is a dramatic scenario taking place; whether you’re willfully ignorant towards it or not.

- Maybe it’s a cheating partner, a sick loved one, a shitty boss, or just an overall low point in your mental health. Maybe it’s all four, mixed together like a shitty cocktail specifically designed to make your life a living hell. Either way, something is occurring and it’s nothing pleasant.

- …And yet, you never “stray from god’s path”. You have this genuine kindness that you extend towards even the most undeserving people and you don’t ever expect anything in return. You might not have a lot of faith but you’re still a good person.

- You’re an innocent soul …and god do you fucking infuriate him. Would it kill you to just stand up for yourself? Dump that douchebag, quit this shitty going nowhere job, do something. You can’t just let people walk all over you all the time!

- Him having to watch you bite your tongue for the hundredth time is what finally brings Loki into things. You say nothing as your awful boyfriend kisses your forehead with a lie about being called into work or allow your boss to demand far too much from you and Bartleby internally screams all the way home so that he can rant to the amused blond.

- The next day, Bartleby drags him out on his usual stalking session and while the blond is initially annoyed that he’s missing his Saturday morning cartoons, the minute he sees you walking down the street, he forgets all about being upset.

- You see, Bartleby falls for your story; your face is just an added bonus, but Loki, Loki falls for your looks before anything else. He lets the brunette lead him throughout the city as you go about your day, half listening to what he’s saying about you and paying more attention to the way your hips move as you walk or the way your face and hair looks in the sunlight.

- Because he’s paying so much attention to your face, he see’s the way it falls when you’re on the phone. That’s when he takes interest in what his friends been saying, asking the man who you’re talking to and listening to him explain that your boyfriend is cancelling your plans so that he can go out and fuck some other girl behind your back.

- And just like that, the two of them are equally invested in the television show that is your mortal life.

- Unbeknownst to you, you’re a major point of discussion in their lives. The more interested in you they become, the more they talk about how you deserve better, and the more they start to talk about how they are what's better.

- You know how hard it is for Loki not to murder your boyfriend once he really starts to develop feelings for you? You know how hard it is for Bartleby to not let him do it? The two of them have to physically restrain themselves from intervening every time someone wrongs you.

- They know that they can’t just pop into your life at random and start hacking away at people, and that it’s best for them to just let your life run its course as naturally as possible …but that doesn't mean that they can’t be a part of that life and subtly influence you towards the “right” decisions, right?

- Right! So it’s not wrong for them to show up to your favorite spot, start making conversation about something they know you’re passionate about and purposefully appear ambiguously gay so that you don’t pull the “I have a boyfriend” card when they ask if you want to join them for some coffee.

- And when the three of you start hanging out more, and your boyfriend disapproves, you can insist that he’s being ridiculous and an argument can arise and your newfound buddies can comfort you and start to make you see that you deserve better! Right before running a train on you with their tongues!

- Ignore that last part, it’s not important. What is important, is that you finally make the decision to dump your ex, giving them the chance to move in on you like they’ve wanted to all along.

- Congratulations my dear, you’ve earned yourself two guardian angels.

- Loki’s love language is a lot more physical than Bartleby’s so, while neither of them are particularly fond of pda, the blond is definitely more likely to grab at you while you’re out in public. Even so, both of them will wrap an arm around you, hold your hand, or place a guiding appendage on your back every now and again.

- Although pda is scarce, affection in private is not; especially when it’s coming from Loki. You’ll usually wind up cuddled up on the couch with Bartleby; either tucked under his shoulder or letting him rest his head on yours, or being tugged around by your other boyfriend; touched in any way he can think of.

- I’m sorry but Loki is going to want to grab at your boobs and ass constantly; usually with an apology and a half-assed excuse about it being “so long” since he’s been able to. Bartleby will scoff and scold him but he isn’t much better when the two of you are kissing.

- While Loki definitely show’s his love through touch, Bartleby tends to show his love through his words and actions. Affirmations, I love you’s, considerate deeds, and loving glances are all things that show you he cares without him having to have his hands all over you; not that he’s especially opposed to that.

- Kisses on the top of the head from Bartleby and pecks on the lips or cheek/corner of the mouth kisses from Loki.

- Bartleby is usually slow and deep with his kisses, taking his time and really savoring the feeling of your lips on his. Loki tends to be more fervent and feverish, either pouring all of his emotions into one kiss or being a bit more playful and teasing. While they both have differently styles, they’re equally as passionate and domineering in their own special ways.

- They find making out with you to be both enjoyable and infuriating. Wouldn’t you be frustrated if you couldn’t crank one out after a hot and heavy kiss between you and your incredibly attractive partner? They’re left high and dry every time, give em’ a little sympathy.

- Being tossed from lap to lap whenever the three of you are together. Both of them are big on cuddling so there’s never a shortage of snuggles when you’re with them.

- Usually, you’re either all piled together in bed at random or sandwiched between the two of them. Bartleby will be the big spoon and Loki will either face you and have you crushed up against his chest; head resting on his bent arm, or have your head laying on his flattened shoulder; one leg hitched over his waist while his arm falls asleep underneath you.

- But don’t be surprised if they want to be the little spoon or cuddled up into your chest; especially when you’re alone with one of them. A murderous streak doesn’t mean that they don’t like being babied from time to time!

- Princess is a big pet name in your relationship: both of them have a habit of using it, along with “angel”; though that's more of an inside joke between the two of them when you’re first getting together. Baby is Loki’s go-to and “honey” or “hon” is Bartleby’s, except for when somethings wrong or he’s being less sincere; he tends to use “sweetheart” in those moments.

- They love watching you get dressed and/or show off the outfits that you bought when you went out shopping. Seeing you all excited and gushing about something so trivial is adorable to them; and seeing your body is always a plus.

- So many hoodies to choose from. You have two boyfriends that almost exclusively wear them, you have at least half a closet full of the fucking things; and they never have the heart to complain once they see you wearing one.

- Who knew that a person marveling at and touching wings could be so erotic? But in all seriousness, anytime they catch you staring or when they first let you see/feel their wings, they were surprised to see just how much of a reaction it elicited from them. There was an overwhelming feeling of love towards you; along with pride, and they can’t even really explain why.

- As I somewhat mentioned before: Bartleby is a lot more romantic than your other boyfriend. He likes his hallmark moments so anniversaries, birthdays and reunions after you go on trips are always made special.

- He’s the one who surprises you with clean dishes or laundry and gets you flowers for no real reason at all.

- His Loki-described “anal retentive attention to detail” means that every date that he plans is almost always near perfect; if not completely perfect, and that you can never hide anything from him; even if it’s just what you want for dinner.

- And speaking of dates: Bartleby tends to go for more serious and romantic outings; like candlelit dinners or nighttime walks around the city, while Loki tends to try and make things more fun; like taking you mini-golfing or getting takeout while watching something like a pay per view wrestling match. Both think that you enjoy theirs more; it’s a point of contention in your relationship.

- Saturday morning cartoons with Loki or people watching at the airport with Bartleby. You get to choose where you want to go but they’ll probably get a little jealous or miffed if you choose the other more than them.

- Movie nights.

- Getting to fly with them at least once. They argue about who gets to do it because they know the chances of you letting them take you up in the air twice is not very high.

- You’re like 90% of Loki’s impulse control. Bartleby is somewhat nonchalant about his friends behavior and only has a problem with it when it interferes with his plans but you have a conscience so you’re the one who has to stop him from slaughtering people just for not saying bless you. He’ll get a little frustrated or disappointed but he’ll also think it’s cute that you’re “so innocent”

- Loki and you goofing off while Bartleby watches with fond exasperation. The blond definitely makes you laugh the most in your relationship.

- Them not being able to eat will not stop them from eating with you or eating whatever you cooked/baked. They’ll remind you that they can’t really eat “them” but once you mention that you can just give them to someone else, they’ll immediately insist that you don’t do that; usually before shoving one into their mouths. They’ll have to spit it out but they’ll enjoy them!

- Loki lowkey loves to prank and just overall fuck with you; like trying to “gaslight” you into believing something innocently stupid or pretending that there’s a spider somewhere nearby. Sometimes he does it just to look like “the hero” and get close to/touch you but he usually can’t keep a straight face and starts laughing; letting you know that he’s lying.

- Getting roped into helping them. They probably somewhat lie to you to get you to agree but they think of it as a necessary evil; you’re sort of their ride so you know.

- Sitting; adorably, confused when they argue and talk about their pasts. Loki will usually try to quickly explain and get you to side with him while Bartleby will join you as you’re sitting and tell you not to worry about it; making Loki drop the subject.

- Them talking about Mooby to those boardroom executives is them trying to convince you that they’re angels: like Loki takes personal offense to Bartleby forgetting some specific portion of your life that he thought was particularly endearing and worth noting.

- Okay but isn’t it reassuring to have a boyfriend who knew almost everything about you; flaws included, before you even met and still decided to pursue you? Arguably, they could have had anyone they wanted and yet, they still chose to love you.

- Bartleby always notices when something is wrong and will usually kick Loki out of the room or bring it up when the two of you are alone, letting you talk to him if you need to and providing comfort. Afterwards, the blond will be let back in or he’ll walk in on you and obliviously make some joke or bring up something so trivial and far from what you were conversing about that it makes you laugh.

- They like to think that they’re above all that jealousy crap; and oftentimes pretend like they are too, but come home from a business dinner in that one dress and bring up josh from finance and you’ll see the truth.

- Loki is all about punishing the wicked. Your ex or a stranger bothering you? He’ll kill them. Someone cut you off in traffic? That’s close enough to them trying to kill you and that’s a no go for him. Someone didn’t say bless you after you sneezed your brains out? Well he’s gonna blow their brains out.

- And when it comes to you, Bartleby will just sit by and let it happen. They can never be too sure when it comes to your fragile, mortal life.

- Loki is the one who causes most of the fights in your relationship but he’s usually too cute for you or Bartleby to stay mad at. The three of you tend to bicker but you do occasionally have a big, ugly fight.

- Depending on whose fault it is and how big the fight is, you either wait and cool off or let the problem go. Loki tends to try to worm his way back into your good graces by making you laugh while Bartleby tends to ask how you’re doing before giving a genuine, heartfelt apology.

- If the fight is your fault, they either take some time to cool off and then just pretend like nothing happened or they’ll hold a grudge (cough cough Bartleby cough cough) until you cozy up to them and apologize.

- Bartleby tends to say “I love you” more seriously than Loki does. Loki will be more nonchalant or just show you that he does while Bartleby is more romantic about it; though the brunette does give a casual “love you” as you’re saying goodbye as well.

- To put it simply: you’ve become their home. You’re the one good thing that’s come out of being cast aside by god and they’re planning on keeping you by their side for as long as they can.

Following up with the "Shadow Sickness" post imma jot down Shadow Sickness headcanons for my own main OC Holly Steelcry. y'know if anyone cares (solemnly and bashfully kicks at the ground with dirty sneakers /j)

"Shadow Sickness" headcanons for The Thing™

The progression of Shadow Sickness (regular state of mind -> corruption of mind and soul -> complete madness and/or eventual death) varies from person to person, for any reason. Holly's state of Shadow Sickness could be considered Halted (still suffering from symptoms but no longer actually "sick") due to how slooooow the progression is. They're in a "gray area" state where she's not developing new symptoms but her existing ones are gradually worsening

Holly first became "infected" when they learned Shadow Magic for the first time, but their symptoms started IMMEDIATELY, which is extremely uncommon. The first symptom Holly displayed was a Tulpa, a physical manifestation of their survivor's guilt of the destruction of Azteca. This would eventually lead to their second symptom of the Shadow Sickness, the physical scarring in which the survivor's guilt manifested - darkened streaks curled around their shoulders and down her back, appearing to resemble blackened, burnt feathers. This would be the first scar of three. (This particular scar brings feelings of shoulder and back discomfort: involuntary back and shoulder twitching, tiny muscle spasms, slight pain, and an occasional burning sensation).

Since then no more Tulpas would manifest, but more physical scarring would appear over time. The second scar resembles a clawed, skeletal hand curling around the front of Holly's throat. The "fingers" are long and crooked and wrap around her jugular and close snugly across her entire neck (this scar causes a sensation of asphyxiation; the tightness/closing of the throat and a loss of oxygen. Rarely it will cause a sore throat and when these feelings flare up, Holly will either go silent completely, repeatedly and audibly gulps, or pauses to take deep open-mouthed breaths of air). This scar starts to appear by the end of Khrysalis and fully manifests by the end of Mirage. It represents the helpless feelings of being forever bound to Shadow combined with the subconscious fear of fully succumbing to its temptations and madness until there is nothing of reason left.

The third (and final thus far) scar to appear is a swath of darkness that stretches across Holly's face and covers both eyes and the bridge of her nose, which appears to look like an eye mask, or the face of a raccoon (this scar is what caused Holly's eyesight to go bad, so much so that without them, Holly can only see light. They cannot distinguish any colors or shapes. This scar also causes intermittent exotropia [the occasional wandering of their right eye, facing outward], and headaches). This scar first started to appear in Karamelle and was fully manifested by the end of Novus. This scar represents the full embrace of the "false" identity Holly adopted of being Bartleby's Scion, and the deep-rooted belief of being inhuman and therefore better or superior than normal humans. It is when Holly accepts the dehumanization of her from everyone around them. (But hey, at least it covers their constant eyebags! ✌🏾)

Other symptoms would include the temporary loss of body control and mild hallucinations. Since Holly's Shadow Sickness is not yet in the most severe stage, she is fully conscious and sound of mind when these episodes happen.

The most common physical episode is when Holly's entire body suddenly goes rigid in a state of paralysis. Stiff like a board and can only move when someone moves them, but will involuntarily snap right back into position. It's spooky to see someone look so tense and frightened but their expression is nonchalant and a bit tired. "Yeah, it happens." This usually lasts for around a minute or two.

Other physical episodes include jumping straight up into the air, suddenly dropping and rolling, the tensing and flexing of their hands like retractable claws, and suddenly switches languages (English to Shadow Language) mid sentence. These are not repeated in a row and only last for seconds before Holly is able to control their movements again and gets back up to resume what she was doing before.

Holly's hallucinations are mild and few and far in between and almost never cause distress. The most common are visions of Shadow Shrikes wandering in the wild and disappearing behind trees, poles, buildings, etc. The only interaction these hallucinations have with Holly is that sometimes they will look up to glance at them before moving on.

The more severe and distressing hallucinations are even rarer. An auditory hallucination of a distant, long whistle above their head, a sound akin to something falling. This usually startles Holly into a physical episode of losing body control to jump up or drop down and roll. They never see anything in the sky when their head snaps up to look, though.

The second is a visual and auditory hallucination of a parliament of owls or an unkindness of ravens stalking Holly from a distance that appears to get closer with every glance. Upon closer inspection their faces and beaks are warped in uncanny, human expressions of anger and judgement. These hallucinations never seem to be violent but give off feelings of unease and malaise.
