Okay okay okay. I'm enough of a nerd that yes I own those damned Disney Star Wars themepark cookbooks, and I've been steadily working my way through most of the recipes in them.
Mostly the recipes are a great balance of fun, interesting, and vaguely deliberately shifted around a really solid base to make it just a little unfamiliar so it's 'space' themed. But actually something you'd be willing to cook, without a million and a half rather finnicky steps and a ton of things to wash up before the thing even meets heat.
(With one or two minor SNAFUs caused by ye olde separated by a common language - tomato paste vs tomato puree woops)
But ahem, anyway that 'spicy' Mandalorian stew, ey?
For all of the advertised heat in the thing... You essentially end up with a rather tasty Japanese style curry with couscous in it, rather than rice on the side.
Nice? Yes.
Spicy? No not really. Even compared to other similarly mild curries, and taking spicy to mean spiced not hot. The Japanese style curry this recipe seems to be based around somewhat infamously comes from the bland for the UK-palette generic curry powder of the Victorians...
Sooo. I am spitefully choosing to follow a large chunk of fandom's example and picking bits of Star Wars at random to pick and choose my canon from... I'm now taking that recipe as 'proof' that Mandalorian cooking... really isn't all that hot.
And yes, I made that Pog soup too. Tasty? Yeah sure. Spicy? ...Eh?
And again, spitefully logicking my way through, which culture is always depicted in the films as actually extremely multicultural, and actually allows its members to retain their home traditions from their roots, and actually is based loosely around Asia rather than the old colonising empire building bounty hunters and rogues mashed with Knights Templar thing that is still the bulk of what the Mandos have?
The Jedi.
Who, notably, are absolutely missing any representation whatsoever in either of the two Disney-era Star Wars cookbooks. Since the setting is post the second Jedi genocide in the Skywalker Saga...
So whilst I'm now headcanoning, Mando food as all bark and very little bite, spitefully and based solely off of a very dubious bit of 'canon'.
I can also with impunity go, Sichuan cooking for the Jedi? Yes. Yes. Yes. Genuinely interesting Indian cuisine? Sure why not? Spicy Uzbek style stews? Great! Shakshouka as fiery as you can get it for breakfast? Amazing! Enough spicy kefta to feed fifty ravenous knights? Fabulous!
There's a brisk, and expensive given they're just cheap space-ramen, trade in the Jedi Temple sector of Coruscant of all the numerous flavours of Space-Buldak Chilli Noodles, since the Padawans basically live off of them.
Swimming in chilli already? Well that's not hot enough for old Master Rancisis! Add more! And don't forget the numbing peppercorns, that's Master Sifo-Dyas's favourite part!
Cue a fanfic, with the usual increasingly irritating set-up. Ahahaha, lets laugh at the culture that supposedly eats nothing but the blandest thing on the menu encounter the Manly Men we only eat the Hottest Vindaloo because we're hard! culture... And... Nope, nosiree the Mandos cannot handle it at all, cue much blue milk chugging, and not from the jedi half of the contingent. Despite all their showboating about how spicy they love their spicy spicy stew, they're like the old stereotype about white Brits in an Indian Curry House in Goodness Gracious Me.
(Seriously still far too spitefully amused that the official 'Spicy Mandalorian Stew' recipe produced bland but tasty comfort food in reality.)

ahh thank you! <3 <3 <3 This ask makes me feel like a real fic writer lmao. I'd love to share!!! call me from the platform is definitely the fic I've spent the longest working on, and each draft was so different!
Here's a cut scene from the draft where I was still doing Damian's POV:
Damian couldn’t eat the breakfast sandwiches. They were made of egg, cheese, and bacon. He texted Jon and instructed him to meet at the nearest park. Damian already claimed a picnic table for them. The food was cold by the time he got there, but he accepted the bag when Damian pushed it toward him. 
“Thanks,” Jon said. 
“I can’t eat them. They’re probably terrible, anyway. Drake bought them.” 
“Why did he buy you food you can’t eat?” Jon asked, unwrapping a sandwich and taking a bite. 
“He bought them for himself,” Damian studied Jon’s face carefully, and pointedly added, “and Conner.” 
Jon huffed a little laugh, which was extra gross because he was eating. He chewed and swallowed.
“Wow, Conner. He must be growing on you. You called me Kent forever.” 
“Shut up, Kent.” 
Jon smiled fondly and Damian forced himself to looked away. 
“Aren’t you going to ask why I stole their breakfast?” 
“Was it because they annoyed you?” 
“Conner said he knows you’ve snuck out of the house.” 
Jon cringed. 
“Oh, shoot. Well, sometimes it’s hard to stop yourself from listening and everything. Dad’s way better at it. I bet he doesn’t know, at least.” 
Damian leaned forward. 
“Have you ever accidentally listened to Conner? Perhaps there’s something we could use against him, to make sure he doesn’t tattle.” 
“Um… no. But I don’t think he’ll tell. He’s cool. And he hasn’t so far.” 
Damian sat back and tapped his finger against the table. So, Jon didn’t know. He didn’t think he did, because Jon told him everything. The thought made his stomach twist but he ignored the pull of guilt. Jon told him everything, and Damian had secrets. They both knew it, so it was fine. 
He thought that seeing Father for essentially two days a week would repair their relationship, but they fought more than ever. When they returned to the cave in the early hours of dawn they got into their worst fight yet over whether or not Damian would be attending college. He pretended to go to bed before sneaking out and catching a string of public transportation to the outskirts of Metropolis. By the time he walked back to Tim’s he’d been up for 24 hours and all he wanted to do was wake him up and tell him the new plan—  that he would be staying in Metropolis full-time and patrolling with Jon— but it wasn’t Tim sleeping in his bed. 
It was an embarrassing shock, to say the least. He’d learned to knock after years of living with Dick and Bruce, but he never expected that sort of surprise from Tim. And he certainly didn’t expect Tim to be gay or bisexual or whatever. He managed to compose himself before confronting the clone— but then he tried to pull that basic blackmailing bullshit, threatening to make it more difficult for him to see Jon. It set him off, even though now that he’d had time to cool down, he realized Jon was right. Conner Kent was hardly a threat. 
It wouldn’t be right to tell Jon, no matter how much he itched to.
But finding out Tim was queer rattled him and left him strangely on edge. He wanted to talk about it with someone, so they would be rattled, too, and he would have concrete proof that it wasn’t just him. It was news that would shock anyone. If Grayson found out, he would be rattled. If Jason found out, his chest would tighten. If Duke found out, he would feel off balance. Just like Damian. 
Jon crumpled up the sandwich wrapper and shoved it back into the bag. He stretched. He could draw Jon with his eyes closed but he still caught himself staring at him all the time like he was a fresh face he needed to memorize. By this point it must’ve been habit. Jon’s arms were long and lean, but he had filled out a lot since starting high school. The lines that made up his face had gotten sharper. His eyes, even behind his glasses, were brighter than the blue sky behind him. It was impossible to capture the way they lit up on canvas, even though Damian was a very talented artist. 
“Do you want to hang out at my house?” Jon asked. 
Damian wasn’t sure what he wanted at all.

‌Alright this was also another wild ride. Cause haha! Fennec foxes mate for life.
‌You see, Tighnari's parents have always warned him abt it. To not ever approach romance unless he was 100% serious abt it since his heart and body wouldn't be able to accept anyone else once he caught feelings™
‌So the forest ranger always seemed distant to that kind of thing and avoided the topic.
‌You can be absolutely sure it was angsty cause even if when you confessed to him he just. He rejected you. Kinda.
‌He said he liked you however his kin work differently and he didn't want to burden you. Since once his brain officially recognized you as his mate he would start getting slightly territorial and there were other things into the equation to consider.
‌You basically said: "fuck it, i don't think i'll ever love anyone else as much as i love you."
‌So here you are, 3 kids deep and married.
‌Man does it ever surprises you...how fast the night changes..../j
‌Tighnari is a great parent tho. It's almost like he was born to take care of others. His nurturing and caring but slightly firm nature makes him the best at it.
‌From a very young age he teaches them all the wonders and dangers of nature. Yes, your kids wouldn't be caught dead eating some kind of dubious mushroom or touching random animals.
‌He's very strict about that lmao.
‌But really it's very cute to see him taking care of them when they're sick or helping them with homework.
‌At morning, usually, the people in Gandharva vile abide by the invisible rule of: "Do not bother Tighnari unless you see him actually leave his house or if it's smth Collei can't handle."
‌The reasons for that is cause he wanted the other forest rangers to not depend on him as much. Collei herself also wanted to make a compromise to take some work off his back.
‌It took a while until the leader decided to abide by it, however everything has been fine so far and it gives him more time to spend with his family so the fennec isn't gonna complain.
‌You better like bland food btw. His senses are way too sharp for him to be able to handle anything that is too "spicy". So when he's in breakfast duty it's not gonna be very uh... remarkable. It's not like his food is tasteless, it's just that it's all very light and suave.
‌The kids prefer when you cook tbh but you do have to take in account how they're also fennecs so it can be overwhelming for them if you don't balance seasonings properly.
‌They're kinda clingy btw. It's not like you're complaining though! More often than not you have 3 adorable little foxes cuddling up to you to have their nap time. Sometimes Tighnari joins too.

‌This man suffers of a very intense case of "resting bitch face". It's incredibly funny to see how his attitude changes in an entire 180 when he's around people he likes or trusts, specially your family.
‌ Ever since he learned that he was going to be a father Cyno has been slightly worried about it. What if...he ends up scaring them? Such concerns would always plague his mind, it's not like he's trying to be scary! It's just...his eyes are razor sharp and there isn't anything he can do about that. He was very much born with this face.
‌So you kinda have to reassure him. Cupping his face and slowly peppering kisses all over it you say it's going to be ok. There's no way the baby would think he's scary, it would probably be happy to see him instead.
‌Kinda made him feel better(not completely but enough to stop looking like he was about to commit a murder due to how much he's been frowning in worry).
‌The general mahamatra is essentially a very caring dad(maybe overprotective). Obviously, is part of the fathers in this list who aren't there as much as they wished they could be, however, he makes up for it in affection and spending quality time.
‌He loves holding his daughter to his chest. Cyno doesn't know why exactly, it just feels right and cozy. And judging by her expression she seems to like it too, as she seems to nuzzle him chasing his warmth.
‌Also just like scara, touch a single hair on this child's head wrong and you are losing that hand. With no warning! Your lost arm IS the warning.
‌Is very adamant about sharing workload. He knows he isn't home often so when he is, cyno takes over some chores and watches his baby so you can rest or so you can be free so you three can eventually enjoy being together.
‌Yeah he can cook and he's pretty good at it! He also might crack one food joke or two, please laugh, he wants to see you smile.
‌When your little girl is old enough to understand it, you suggest have family Genuius Invokation TCG nights every now and then.
‌It made Cyno incredibly happy, he hugged you almost to death.
‌Explain the rules to his baby in the easiest way to understand possible. And yet...he can still be kinda ruthless.
‌This man is convinced that letting her win will ruin her expectations for it so...he makes sure to crush her relentlessly until she finally starts to understand what's going on.
‌Truth to be told he only wanted to help her develop her critical thinking and strategic planning. They aren't bad skills to have and besides, they're both competitive. She's bound to learn from her mistakes.
‌Your daughter loves his jokes(at least until she hits her teens. She'll start thinking they're lame by then) and the he always has this really happy smile on his face when he makes her laugh.
‌Mornings with Cyno are very fun, let's put it like that. More specifically cause you have a man who has eyes that could literally cut someone's arm off with only the power of glaring wearing some pink frilly apron and doing domestic shit.
‌It's. The gap moe is great.

You already told them not to but SOMEONE encourages and enables their chaotic behavior.
We already stablished they're all kinds spoiled, even if you try your best not to let it affect them too much, so good luck fighing against literal 4 puppy eyes(your fucking husband joined) when they ask you to have i don't know, ice cream for breakfast.
These boys are kinda...hyperactive so as soon as they're done eating they're already putting on their winter clothes and running outside to play in the cold wonderland that is Snehznaya.
Yes! They get sick easily cause of that. Do they ever learn? No.
Surprisingly Childe himself just made a compromise with them to protect their health. It's not like they couldn't have fun inside for a change.
It would spare your heart for sure.
So they make pillow forts, play with whatever toys they have or try their luck with genius Invokation TCG.
Ajax is absolutely tired of getting CRUSHED at the game by literal toddlers, this shit gets old fast.
He was built for irl combat not stupid card strategy games! (Yeah he's overdosing on copium rn).
He might sulk so give him a couple kisses and he'll be back to normal.

Didnt Kodi say he wasnt attracted to Christine at their wedding.. or something about her eating something and it made him sick. How awful is that? I think Meri is basically a single woman. Janelle too. I wonder what would happen if it was just Robyn and Janelle left? Before Covid did he visit the other wives in rotation?
Lol there are a lot of questions here let me pull out the bullet points:
YEA so for anyone who doesn't know that story it was an incredibly mean and bizarre little anecdote that Kody included in one of their books about his courtship with Christine: he talks about being on a road trip with her and stopping to get some snacks one day in the morning. Christine got loaded nachos (queen) and Kody, who says he'd been drinking soda constantly to stay awake while said it had been messing with his stomach, so just looking at the nachos made him really queasy. And the story could've just ended there, but he adds that he'd always thought Christine was very cute even though she was "a little chubby" but seeing her eat the nachos in the car in the morning grossed him out so much that he started to reconsider their relationship...........and if that weren't enough he adds this at the end: "Looking back, I hate myself for the thoughts I had at that moment, but the sight of this chubby girl in my car devouring chili cheese nachos for breakfast put the brakes on our relationship." Just an incredibly random and cruel thing to say about the mother of your children imho.
In the first episode of this season, Kody talks about his motivations for marrying Christine being more about duty than attraction and romantic feelings which...........I really don't get where he's coming from there. He already had 2 wives at this point, I don't see why he felt like he HAD to marry Christine if serious feelings weren't there? It feels like an insight into his thinking when he married all 3 of the first wives and probably why all but his relationship with Robyn seems to be failing. Christine said she did feel romantic feelings at their wedding and was kind of shocked to hear that he didn't.
Meri is essentially a single woman but at this point, I think she's made a very conscious decision to stay. I think her motivations are more about atonement within her religion/relationship more than anything else, even though according to both of them it's been over a decade since they've had a satisfying romantic relationship. Unlike Christine, I don't think she has enough of a sense of self to leave and maybe feels like she wouldn't have a proper support system if she left the family, since her parents are gone and she only has one child. Honestly if anyone else leaves, I feel like it'll be Janelle since her kids are currently up in arms over their dad's treatment of their part of the family and I think her kids have a lot of influence on her.
I think their schedule has been fucked up since their move to Flagstaff tbh, but in Vegas and Utah, Kody would either do alternating nights at each wife's house or do a couple days in a row just depending. Since they were all right there either in the big Utah house or the cul de sac it wasn't much of an issue, bc even if he was at one wife's house that night he could still be present for the others if they needed something, but yea as far as I know it was way more equal and balanced.

So I've enabled tipping on my blog because I'm in a rough spot and I'm gonna be struggling to feed everyone for the next week or two, depending on certain factors. Sob story is below the cut cause I genuinely hate having to drag this shit out but I also feel like I owe it to the people potentially willing to help me out, so:
So some of you may or may not know that I recently had a bout with thyroid cancer this past year or so and that I had surgery in the summer to have one side of my thyroid removed. If you didn't, it's cause genuinely I'm not a huge fan of talking about it in online spaces cause it's pretty personal and I don't really like the type of attention stuff like this gets.
Anyway at the time I was not doing too badly financially--I actually had a bit of savings built up and I had enough work hours accumulated that I qualified for EI sickness benefits so I wasn't too worried. Well, what I didn't know was that the "insurable weeks" number for my region was increased from 15 to 24, which heavily altered their calculations and made it so I was essentially getting 35% of my regular paycheck each week.
On top of that, the CRA still wanted me to pay back their CERB "loan" (if you follow any other Candians you may have heard about this garbage move by the government to sign up workers who were laid off during the start of the pandemic onto a benefit program that, while it kept a lot of people afloat, apparently included a caveat that if you didn't use 100% of it and went back to work you would have to pay $2k back to them, essentially punishing essential workers for going back to work) and decided they were going to garnish my already dismal benefit payments. They figured I would be fine to survive off of $90 a week while recovering from surgery.
Predictably, my savings disappeared. I am very grateful that my roommate was patient and did not see fit to make me move out when I couldn't pay rent, and when I got back to work I tried as hard as I could to pay him back as quickly as possible. I was essentially giving him every dollar I was not already spending on rent and bill payments. I struggled to pay for groceries and had to beg folks on twitter for money.
At the same time I started to develop further health issues. I couldn't sleep at night, I felt like sleeping all day, and I started experiencing episodes of somnolence (sudden feelings of tiredness bordering on falling asleep) while at work. I would have to leave work early, or sometimes I would even fall asleep while eating my breakfast in the morning. I missed more and more work and when I did make it in my performance would plummet after 4 hours and I would make major mistakes or even injure myself. I work in a garment factory btw.
I struggled to get in touch with my doctor, or really, any doctor to figure out what was wrong. Our healthcare system right now is in the process of being tanked to hell by the provincial government so they can justify introducing a two tier semi privatized system that values money over care. All this to say I was basically on my own trying to treat my worsening health with sleep supplements and energy drinks. It helped, but not enough. As of early February I was still missing work and struggling to stay awake most days.
I hit a wall and my anxiety made it impossible to go to work in the morning. Full on anxiety attacks, self harm, emotional breakdowns, the works. I asked to take a leave of absence to try and focus 100% on getting better. I've since been able to get in contact with my doctor and hopefully work towards a solution.
Right now I am waiting. I am waiting on EI to get back to me about benefits. I am waiting to hear from Social Services to see if they can help. And I am waiting on my tax return to be reviewed so I can pay my past due rent. I have a negative account balance. I went to the store yesterday and bought milk and margarine with a roll of change. The CRA is saying I could be waiting until the 13th to hear about my tax assessment. EI does not have an estimate for me lol. Social Services hasn't even gotten back to me and I'm dreading trying to reach out due to past trauma working with them.
Anyway. If you have anything to give the tip option is there. I'm gonna attempt to make dnd adoptables as well in the meantime but I'm gonna be real it might take too long to make anything worthwhile and idk if it can wait. I got myself, my spouse, and Victor to keep fed and my roommate breathing down my neck at this point so if you've read all this and have anything to spare it would be greatly appreciated.
