A character reference sheet for my character Bastet, first in a series documenting all of my previous Dungeons and Dragons characters. This design unfortunately went unused, but I still played the character in a slightly different form. Her personality simply did not seem to be a good fit for the party she was part of, which needed a face much more than a sulking loner. She was a Blood Hunter Tabaxi.
The image text is a bit difficult to read without zooming in, but the text is also updated in the image description for easier accessibility.
Forgot to add a blurb for it but she lost her tail in a fight with a Devil, she was injured and tried to escape, but the devil grabbed her by her tail and began to pull her back. She had to lop it off to get away.

hi I'm feeling self conscious about my character ideas for an upcoming dnd campaign so I'm putting it all here so the act of explaining the characters themselves is not foreign and scary to me when it eventually happens. I'll try to use a read more, but I'm on mobile and idk how that works uwu. I could also use some help if you don't mind reading a little.
1) A black cat tabaxi twilight cleric of Bastet named Tabby (Tabitha) who was mistaken as a kitten and hidden/raised in a shed by a little boy until his mother found her and was like "uh! thats a fucking child." The family adopted her. Her brother is terrified of the dark so they grew up pretending she would fight all of the monsters off to protect him until she realized that there actually ARE monsters at night and started fighting them off. When her brother left home to go to paladin training (or something idk), she also left home to help others terrorized by big bad evil monsters.
2) A human artillerist artificer named Rhys who used to work as a child in an iron mine (illegally obv). She staged a worker's rights protest and the man who employed her killed/injured her mentor whom she was deeply attached to. She used to dream about being a successful artificer like her employer, but his actions (almost) ruined it for her. She is now sort of wandering from place to place, trying to improve her skills while also pretending she isn't still deeply hopeful that one day people will know her as an important inventor.
I could use some advice too tbh. Rhys is my favorite of the two, but the party I'm joining has no cleric and it both makes me irrationally nervous and makes me think its a good way to get the players/dm to like me more (they're mostly strangers and the dm is new and keeps accidentally almost tpking the party). Should I stick with the character I know I'll enjoy or should I use tabby as my training wheels? If I do use tabby, is it weird to change characters mid campaign if I find that playing her really isn't doing it for me? ALSO, should tabby have a goal other than "find bigger and scarier monsters????" Like Rhys's goal and character development is very clear to me but I don't know how tabby will proceed at all. Any ideas for passions/drives??? Because "protect people" feels very bland to me and I'm not sure if I'll be able to play that very well.

#42: Bastet, Goddess of Cats
Tumblr media
Tell me, Gods and Goddesses, who among you is a cat person?
Well... me, for one. I believe in the feline supremacy over the canines, and the Ancient Egypt seems to agree with me. After all, Bastet was their chief protectress. While a fierce and deadly warrior, she was also the goddess of music, revelry and all that is joyful. She protected from diseases (just like cats protect from rodents), and was also the keeper of the hearth. I can think of no god better to safeguard us across the desert landscapes of Egypt. Let's pounce!
Next Time: You know... I like muscular women. I like short-haired women. This one, though... She can Roma my Invicta any day! <3
Hopefully, we won't need nine lives to complete this build. What do we need?
Who Let the Cats Out?: Bastet needs her cat minions to come out and play whenever she desires. Cats are useful, both big and small.
Cat Scratch Fever: We're nimble and dexterous. We pounce and prowl, and have a high single target damage.
Whip it Good: Taking a lesson from the Trevor Belmont's handbook, we need to rely on our whip mostly.
---
There is only one (and obvious) way to go here: Bastet is a tabaxi. We get a +2 Dexterity and +1 Charisma, 60 feet of Darkvision, and an interesting "escape" ability called Feline Agility; we can choose to move with a doubled speed (our regular speed is 30 for ground and 20 for climbing) until the end of our turn. We regain that ability if we spend one turn not moving at all. We gain proficiency in Perception and Stealth skills, we speak Common and one other language of our choice, and we get natural weapons in the form of Cat Claws; we can make unarmed strikes that deal [1d4 + Strength modifier] slashing damage.
Tumblr media
Since Bastet is the protector of families and the hearth, and because cats are awesome, we're gonna make her a Folk Hero. We gain proficiency in Animal Handling and Survival, proficiency with one type of artisan's tools and land vehicles, and the Rustic Hospitality feature, which allows us to plea to the common folk, when looking for shelter or food. They may even sometimes defend us from the law, but don't expect to throw their lives away and fight for you. Not without a very good reason.
ABILITY SCORES
Dexterity will be our main ability, we need that cat-like reflexes and it's gonna be our primary damage source. Wisdom will be next, cats are like... the absolute beacon of divine wisdom. Trust me. Constitution will follow, we gotta have good condition to prowl the jungles and fight huge apocalypse snakes every day.
Charisma is next, because let's be honest, a purring cat will get everything it wants. Strength is on the lower end, but still good to have, and finally we're gonna dump Intelligence... we don't really need it for anything.
CLASS
It's been a while since we've had a non-Multiclass build... and this is one of those times. I'm actually going to try something new and go back to the classic, non-revised Ranger for Bastet. Rangers get the d10 as their Hit Dice, [10 + Constitution modifier] initial Hit Points, proficiency with light armour, medium armour, shields, simple weapons, and martial weapons. Let's give Bastet a studded leather set and, of course, a whip. We can also pick up some darts and daggers. Our saving throws are Strength and Dexterity, and we get to pick three class skills from the list (Athletics, Insight, and Nature).
Level 1: We start by picking our Favoured Enemy; we choose one creature type from the following list (aberrations, beasts, celestials, constructs, dragons, elementals, fey, fiends, giants, monstrosities, oozes, plants, or undead) or two species from the humanoids category. We get an advantage on Survival checks related to tracking our favourite enemy and on Intelligence checks related to recalling information about them. At 6th and 14th level, we can choose another creature type.
We also have an option to choose the Natural Explorer feat, but we're going to pick the Deft Explorer optional feature from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. We gain one benefit, with two more at 6th and 10th level. The Canny benefit lets us double our proficiency bonus for one skill we're proficient in (and gives us two languages of our choice); let's pick Perception.
Tumblr media
Level 2: We get to pick our Fighting Style. For Bastet, we're gonna choose the Duelling style; while holding a melee weapon (and a whip does count as one) in one hand, and no other weapon, we can add a +2 bonus to our damage roll.
Rangers also get access to Spellcasting. Wisdom is our casting ability, and we don't know any cantrips or rituals. Rangers know a fixed number of spells, so we start with two 1st-level ones: Hunter's Mark and Speak with Animals.
Level 3: We can now pick our subclass, our Ranger Conclave. We need cats, so the only real option here is the Beast Master. We're once again going to look into Tasha's and replace the subclass's first feature with the Primal Companion one. We can summon a beast representing an aspect of nature (Land, Sea, or Sky) to act as our familiar. Unlike arcane familiar, however, we cannot perceive through our companion's senses; its main purpose is to aid us in combat.
With Primeval Awareness, we can spend one spell slot to focus on the region around us. For 1 minute per spell slot level we can sense the following creatures within 1 mile (or 6 miles if it's our favoured terrain) of us: aberrations, celestials, dragons, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead.
We also get another 1st-level spell, let's get Jump.
Level 4: Time for our first Ability Score Improvement! Let's boost our Dexterity and Constitution for this one.
Level 5: We get Extra Attack. During a single Attack action, we can now make two attacks. We also unlock 2nd-level spells: let's take Pass without Trace.
Level 6: We improve our starting feats. We can now pick additional terrain to claim as our favourite, as well as another favourite enemy type. Our Deft Explorer also improves; with Roving, our speed increases by 5 feet.
Level 7: We get our subclass upgrade. Being put through Exceptional Training, our beast companion can be now commanded to take the Dash, Disengage, or Help action (if it doesn't attack on its turn). Its attacks now also count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistances and immunities.
Speaking of, we can pick up another 2nd-level spell, and we're gonna get ourselves the Magic Weapon one.
Tumblr media
Level 8: Time for another ASI. Let's put two points into Dexterity to cap it to a 20.
We also get Land's Stride; moving through non-magical difficult terrain costs us no extra movement. We can also pass through non-magical plants and not be slowed by them or take damage if they have thorns, spines, etc. In addition, we have an advantage against magical plants create to slow us down (e.g. the Entangle spell).
Level 9: We don't get much here, just unlock 3rd-level spells. Let's get Conjure Animals to summon some more cats and cat-like creatures.
Level 10: Halfway through the build, and we get a camouflage option. Let's take the version from Tasha's - Nature's Veil. As a bonus action, we can become invisible (along with all the gear we're wearing) until the end of our next turn. We can do this a number of times equal to our proficiency bonus per long rest.
Level 11: We get another upgrade for our subclass. Our beast companion now strikes with Bestial Fury, which is in similar vein to our Extra Attack. If our companion has the ability to Multiattack, it can utilize it henceforth. We also get another 3rd-level spell: let's pick Protection from Energy.
Level 12: Time for another ASI. Let's put two points into Constitution for more of those tasty Hit Points.
Level 13: We unlock 4th-level spells. Let's become an even better hunter/tracker with Locate Creature.
Level 14: We can now Vanish. We can use the Hide action as a bonus action on our turn. Also, unless we deliberately leave a trail, we cannot be tracked through non-magical means. We can also pick the final favoured enemy type.
Level 15: For our final subclass upgrade, we get to Share Spells. Whenever we cast spells that affect us, they also affect our beast companion provided it is within 30 feet of us. For this level's spell, let's take Dominate Beast.
Level 16: Time for another ASI. Let's get more Constitution. Two points into that.
Level 17: We unlock 5th-level spells, which are the absolute peak of what a Ranger can do. Let's take the Steel Wind Strike, or...
Tumblr media
Level 18: We get the Feral Senses. We are now aware of all creatures invisible within 30 feet of us, provided they're not hiding from us and we're not blinded or deafened.
Level 19: For our final ASI, we're actually going to cap our Constitution to a nice, round 20. For our final spell of the build, let's take Greater Restoration.
Level 20: Our capstone is Ranger 20. This gives us the ability Foe Slayer. Once per our turn, we can add our Wisdom modifier to one attack or damage roll we make against our favoured enemy.
---
And this is it. Catwo-- err, I mean Bastet, the divine feline of Egypt. Yes... ekhm, how did we do?
We're an amazing hunter and unparalleled tracker. We are great in survival-type games, and with spells like Hunter's Mark and Locate Creature there's a slim chance the enemy will escape our pursuit. We also have natural weapons in case we're disarmed, and we've capped two important abilities to a 20.
Our AC is 17, we've a +5 to our initiative and the average of 177 Hit Points.
For a Ranger, we don't have many ranged abilities, though. Also, our spells are mostly utility-based and not that useful in combat. We also sacrificed balance of abilities for the double 20, so our Strength and Intelligence scores are pretty bad.
---
Phew. I honestly have no idea why it took so long. I guess I never saw Bastet as a Ranger and only recently decided this was the best course for her. Anyway, I have a feeling the next one will be a wee bit easier. Hopefully, you've enjoyed this one, my dears!

My tiefling/tabaxi cleric, Spar, has a little toy mouse that he's attached to. It's blue and yellow and has purple ears. His dad gave it to him (and a similar one to his sister) when he was a kid. He's not sure why he likes it so much but somehow (probably divine intervention, thanks Bastet), he has kept it from being lost or stolen by cats or children.
