Life
Where to start? I often feel I am nearly a shell of my former self. I have heard these words come out of my mouth at a doctor’s office “You ruined my life” I know there are people that are suffering far worse than I am. I was just served a big old piece of not what I expected and not what you told me. I agreed to have the second spine surgery because I still had some spinal issues. The main…

Hey y’all! Which quilt should I work on next? I went to some new (to me) quilt shops and now I have a few options
1. Finally quilt the pink and green watercolor floral chevron quilt top (in my defense, I only got the backing fabric today)
2. Finally quilt the rainbow triangle quilt (I have no defense I’ve had the backing fabric for a while lol)
3. Make a purple bee layer cake quilt
4. Make a SUPER COLORFUL rainbow batik jelly roll quilt and finally use up the backing fabric I originally bought for the rainbow triangle quilt and then my grandma was like “no you can’t use it for that”

2022 Craft Project Roundup
it’s almost the end of 2022 and I had the thought - why not compile all my projects for the year in one post? It’d be fun (for me). So here we go!!
January - March: Ficbinding of my Taking Care Trilogy
Tumblr media
A project I had been dreaming of even while I was writing these fics - I finally made fancy hand-bound copies of my longest fic series ever.
March: Straw Marquetry Panels
Tumblr media
Big shoutout to Pipsqueak on the Renegade server who let me know that this shit exists, because it is the perfect intersection of things I like: natural materials, shiny things, geometric shapes, straw!. I discovered that straw marquetry is incredibly fiddly and time consuming and my initial thought of full ceilings or large murals was way overly ambitious. But I still love it, despite all it’s fiddliness
April - June: Various failed experiments with straw dyeing
There is a way to dye straw. It must exist. People sell dyed straw. But despite at least 10 attempts with fiber reactive and RIT dyes with various prep methods, I did not once succeed in getting dye to take to the outer shiny side of the straw. (I intended to make pink straw for the wedding guestbook later in this list)
May: Pieced cubical bulletin board covers
Tumblr media
I decided to spice up my cubical a bit with some nice fabric covers over my bulletin boards, after a friend told me it was super easy to remove them & cover them with fabric via tacks. The green fabric I got turned out to be too short 🤦 so I got a jelly roll of rainbow batiks and pieced these funky covers together.
May - June : Pair of dyed historical-inspired tunics
Tumblr media
Another project I’ve had in my head for years - using a medieval reenactment tunic tutorial to make my own shirts out of linen. Linen turns out to be fabulous to dye, unlike straw, which is evil. It does wrinkle the moment you look at it, but you just have to be chill with that.
June: First longstitch bookbinding
Tumblr media
Inspired by the amazing works of queercore-curriculum I had decided to use a criss-cross longstitch for the wedding guestbook I planned to make for my friend A. This was my initial testbook, which I did on graph paper thinking I could use it as a journal. The graph paper turns out to be very thin and bad for journal writing but the book itself I am quite proud of :)
July: DIY alcohol stove (& knots!)
Tumblr media
So in July I went to a natural building/strawbale construction workshop and I was going to need to cook for myself on the first day of camping - hence a brief research binge on alcohol stoves & how to DIY them. This is the simplest possible alcohol stove made out of a cat food can & while youtube will tell you to optimize by making it much more complicated it works fine for boiling water/making fancy curry mashed potatoes.
Also around this time I learned how to do several knots for having up my camping hammock, which isn’t exactly a craft but it’s not knot a craft ;)
July: Part of a house
Tumblr media
oh fuck it, the house goes on the list. As part of the aforementioned workshop I (along with about 40 other people) assembled the strawbale walls for a family home. It was by far the most amazing experience I had in 2022. Like adult summer camp with more powertools & while learning skills I hope to someday turn upon a home of my own.
September: Pajama pant spectacular
Tumblr media
In September I made two new pajama pants (one of rockin’ flannel and one of a nice purple shot cotton) and also repaired several old pairs (new elastic, added pockets, patched some holes etc). Yes I do patch pockets on pajamas, they’re not fashionable but they’re much more convenient for phone access while cooking.
October: Wedding Guestbook
Tumblr media
A guestbook for my friend’s wedding, done in the style of that other longstitch book, but with more fancy things :3
November: Small notebook
Tumblr media
Made a small notebook with the offcuts from the wedding guestbook for a friend gift exchange. I was very proud of this one; simple and sweet and finished in a single weekend (it helped that the pages were already deckled to size).
December: Paperboard desk organizer
Tumblr media
I keep my downstairs stuff (pens, wallet, keys, etc) in a little basket downstairs so I don’t have to wander the house looking for them and I decided to finally make organizers for it so it wouldn’t be a melange of mess. Used scraps from my bookbinding supplies & they turned out pretty good considering I have 0 box making experience.
December: Tablet weaving/work lanyard
Tumblr media
Another craft I’ve wanted to try for years: tablet weaving! I finally thought of an excuse one day at work while contemplating how much I hated my lanyard - it flipped around constantly and the keys made unending clanking noises when I walked. I might make a post on tablet weaving bc I am in love. I need to think of more excuses. It’s so good, so satisfying. It’s like the opposite of straw marquetry in terms of how much I enjoy it in the moment :p

Quilt Block Mania - January is Desserts
Welcome to my stop on the Quilt Block Mania Blog Hop. Each of the designers participating in the hop are sharing a block pattern inspired by this month’s theme, which is Desserts.
The hardest part of this month’s challenge was choosing which of the many desserts I love to feature on my block. I finally decided on ice cream, but even then I couldn’t use just one kind!
I have fond memories of visiting the ice cream truck when I was a kid, so I featured my favorite treats from the truck on my block—a colorful popscicle with lots of fruit flavors (I chose grape and lime) and an ice cream cone with two scoops—pink peppermint and orange sherbet.
I would probably never put those flavors together now, but as a kid I couldn’t get enough of fruity flavors!
I call my block Ice Cream. I hope you’ll make my block! If you do, please tag me on social media @inquiringquilter.
My block uses simple piecing and fusible applique techniques. If you need help with fusible applique there are photo tutorials on my blog to help you.
There are lots of designers in this hop so be sure to visit all of them for your free pattern. Here are links to all the blocks in the Quilt Block Mania Desserts Series:
Jelly Roll Quilt Block by Carolina Moore Birthday Layer Cake by Crafty Staci Ice Cream by Inquiring Quilter Thumbprint Cookie at Inflorescence Cupcake Block by BoBerry Design Co. Cakestand by Scrapdash Rocket Pop at Sugar Sand Quilt Co. Banana Split by QuiltFabrication Guava Empanadas by Paleofish Designs Butter Dominoes at Patti's Patchwork Cupcake by Penny Spool Quilts Macarons at Lovingly, Lissa Ice Cream Cone at The (not so) Dramatic Life Rainbow Gelatin by Patchwork Breeze Sherbet Pop by The Quilting Room with Mel Peppermint by Katie Mae Quilts Smarties By Sally's Sewing Circle Rainbow Sprinkles Cake on Stand Cherry Pie by Flowerdog Designs Raspberry Cheesecake block by Blue Bear Quilts
I often make my block into a mini quilt so I can display it at work. You can do that too with each month’s Quilt Block Mania block from me, or you can collect the blocks from all the designers in each month and make a quilt.
Scroll through my past Quilt Block Mania blocks. By the way. If you missed getting my other Quilt Block Mania block patterns they are available in my shop.
Quilt Block Mania returns next month with the theme, “Connections” so be sure to come back on the first Tuesday of the month to see what I create!
How do I get the free Ice Cream block pattern?
My Ice Cream block pattern is free to my email subscribers.
The next newsletter will go out Sunday, January 3rd. Watch for it in your Inbox! Inside the newsletter is a code that will enable you to download the block pattern from my shop for free.

Finished! Validate meeeeee.
Some encouragement for anyone else considering this project:
♡ I queued my various progress posts, and it actually only took me about one long weekend of work, not counting last minute trips to the local quilt shop and hand-finishing my binding.
♡ Apart from the lining, this is about 75% made from one jelly roll, with some support from existing scraps and maybe 1, 1 1/2 yards of additional fabric. (The jelly roll is the celestial batik from Missouri Star.) Now, I'm fat, this pattern has lapels, and this is cut to a Seamwork size 26. If you're a smaller person and/or using a simpler pattern, you can maybe get away with a jelly roll plus lining.
♡ My patch pockets are orphan blocks from the exterior and from a 2016 baby quilt. If you have orphan blocks lying around, this might be a fun way to use them!
♡ New quilting cotton has no drape to speak of. I expect this coat to soften and drape much better after a few washes.
♡ ETA: THIS HAS NO BATTING OR ACTUAL QUILTING. Tbh that would take much longer and be more difficult, and you'd have to bind all of your seams instead of just the hems. I live in Florida and this is about as much jacket as I ever need, but if I wanted to make something warmer I'd probably do a flannel interlining or something instead of true quilting. I'm still debating some hand stitched quilting around the cuffs and collars though, to keep everything stable.
Some additional notes, in case anyone else wants to do something similar with the Seamwork Quince:
♡ I used the Seamwork Quince body and the Seamwork Baz collar. It came out pretty well, but I had some trouble with my shoulder seam coming up short at first. I had to piece on extra fabric at the shoulder and sleeve, which was fine with a scrappy mixed pattern project like this.
♡ OK, you see the blue and yellow half-square triangle midway down the sleeve? I expected that to fall at my upper arm. It's at my elbow. And that *is* the top of the sleeve pattern piece. Now I do have narrow shoulders, but the shoulder on this is *very* dropped.
♡ Another sleeve issue: the cuff piece is meant to be folded over, ie halved in length down the arm. I decided to combine the sleeve piece and the cuff and didn't account for that, so my sleeves are hilariously long and have to be cuffed back, like, 6 inches.
Overall, if I decide to make another one... I'll use the Helen's Closet Pona Jacket pattern, which has everything I want in a quilt coat pattern without any hacking. But this was the pattern I had already in my profession and printed, and it worked out well.

Working on a quilt top for my daughter this morning. I'm in love with these batik strips, and this jelly roll pattern is fast and lovely. Who doesn't love a quilt top that can be sewn in a day?

Hexi stripe quilt top is finished and the whole thing is pin basted. Overall size is a large throw, about 2x2.5 yards? It looks about the size of my 16-patch, which is slightly smaller than a standard twin quilt. It’s a good size quilt that I think will be really nice for family cuddles on the sectional couch.
I thought about doing a batik backing to match the front a little but there weren’t any in stock around here in wide-width and I didn’t want to do a pieced backing this time. Then I debated between the red/orange and the blue/green version of this butterfly and flower backing fabric but I decided I wanted the blue to tame some of the brightness of the top.
The points on the ends will be cut/straightened out after I quilt the whole thing. Batting is 80/20 ‘cause it felt like the right loft and washability (important ‘cause my brother’s family includes 2 under 5) for a family quilt.
I haven’t decided how I’m going to quilt it yet so this may be the last you see of it for a while, haha.
Oh, and I just remembered I left off on a mini quilt cliffhanger the other day. I needed 1 more hexi block but was out of the colorful jelly roll strips I needed. BUT I had 2 white strips and a bunch of scraps so I made this:

I don’t want to jinx myself
Two posts in the same week? Does that mean Normal is approaching? One can only hope. I have spent some time getting a few things organized and that helped. I now have things in baskets ready to sew, should the mood take me. Honestly, I am preparing for the fact that my daughter is going off to college. Not much time left (Sad). She has been spending a lot of time working this summer, so it has…

It's like a stoned clown from the 60's puked all over fabric. So garish it's awesome.
Not quite sure how I'm going to arrange the blocks, but at least they're trimmed.
ETA: this composition would have been better as color families together if one wanted something easy on the eyes. The randomly scrappy look really doesn't work for this set of batiks. I left several of them out when I made my lone star out of a jelly roll set of this same line because they were too jarring with the rest. The above is a layer cake sliced and sewn.

My Day on the Island Batik Log Cabin Blog Hop
Welcome to my day on the Island Batik Log Cabin Blog Hop!
This month long celebration of Island Batiks features tons of giveaways, gorgeous batiks, and beautiful quilts. Be sure to read all the way to the end of this post to enter my giveaway, the Island Batik giveaway, and to find links to the other Ambassadors who are participating!
This hop features the Fall 2019 batik collections that are arriving in stores now. Click here to use the Store Locator to find a store near you that carries Island Batik.
For the blog hop we were to make a log cabin quilt 36” square or larger using as many of the fabrics from our Fall 2019 collection as possible. I got Jewel Box, an gorgeous collection of blues, purples, and greens.
I started with my Picnic Under the Stars pattern intending to make the quilt with the Jewel Box collection plus the addition of some Check it Out batiks.
Then I discovered that the Check it Out batiks are no longer available <sob> so I decided to create a variation of the design and thus Lake Cabin was born!
I decided to call the new design Lake Cabin because the combination of log cabin blocks and stars reminded me of nights at the lake cabin where me and my Bee friends used to have quilt retreats once or twice a year.
The stars at night over the lake were so beautiful! And the way I’ve laid out the log cabin blocks in this pattern, they remind me of the soft ripples on the lake as boats would motor by the lake house.
Of course this pattern would look wonderful in any color, but I love the blues, greens, and purples of Jewel Box and how they pop against that bright white batik.
I also love how scrappy Lake Cabin is, and how it lets all the colors in this fabulous batik collection really shine.
It’s been snowy and bitter cold of late, but I managed to find one sunny day with moderate temps in which I could take photos of Lake Cabin. My daughter and I ventured to a nearby urban village where we had fun staging the quilt with various backdrops.
I received a 1/2 yard of all the fabrics in the Jewel Box collection plus two coordinates. I ended up using almost all of the coordinating blue batik I was sent for the star backgrounds and the large outer border, so I didn’t have any of the blue left over for the binding. I decided to make the binding scrappy to match the quilt and I’m glad I did!
I made the back scrappy as well. I needed 5 yards for the back, so I pieced together as many large Island Batik scraps that matched the front as I could find and then pulled a few prints from my stash and used them to create a backing as large as I needed. I love mixing prints with batiks because they compliment each other so well.
I quilted Lake Cabin on my home machine, quilting feathers in the log cabin blocks and a modern wavy line design in the stars. I quilted using Schmetz Jeans 100/16 needle because it was still good. I find that a Jeans needle penetrates the tight weave of a batik nicely. Still, it wears out after quilting a big quilt like this one. Next time, I’m definitely going to try the Chrome needles we were sent in our boxes and see if they retain their sharpness longer.
Here are the quilt details:
"Lake Cabin" 66” x 82" Original Design Fabrics: Island Batik Jewel Box collection (121933560 from the collection used in the outer border) and White (Solids) Backing: Peacock (Basics) and 121809612 (Check It Out collection) and various prints from my stash Binding: 121910855, 121917865, 121922883, 121917885, 121930883, 121935843, 121936865, 121937603, and 121937855 (Jewel Box collection) Batting: Hobbs Heirloom Cotton Piecing Thread: Aurifil 50 wt. #2311 (Muslin) Quilting Thread: Aurifil 50 wt. #2311 (Muslin) and #4182 (Dark Turquoise) Pieced and quilted by Jennifer Fulton
