Do I know the Ric Grayson arc is going to be a slog to get through? Sure, even with being able to binge it, it’s going to be A Long Read. But you know what I will say for this overall moment in the timeline? (Batman #55 + Nightwing Annual #2 + Nightwing #50) THEY KNOW HOW TO START ME OFF RIGHT. I have never seen anyone that level of nuclear hot when getting shot, much less following it up with Caring Dad Bruce who just picks up his kid and protectively leans his head in against Bruce’s shoulder to haul ass to get him help because HE. WILL. BE. FINE. like Bruce will fucking will him into being fine if he has to, like that’s some quality visual storytelling there, you can just take one glace at that page and know Batman loves that kid in his arms, and then!! AND THEN!! Ric Grayson may be kind of annoying but holy SHIT that dude is hot. Do you SEE the way he’s drawn in those panels!? What I’m looking forward to with this arc is that it seems like it was an actual shakeup of the status quo, that the length of it means that it actually had some time for the impact, that Bruce actually has to not just freak out about Dick losing his memories, not just freak out at the distance Dick puts between them now that he doesn’t remember Bruce or Nightwing or the entire history that led him to being the heart of his family, but that Bruce actually is going to have to work at this for the first time in a long while. That it comes on the heels of Selina leaving him at the altar, so the entire reason Dick was in Gotham was because he was trying to cheer up Bruce, the entire reason KGBeast shot him was because Bane was trying to get to Batman, so there’s some really delicious underlying guilt that he can’t rely on Dick to forgive him for, because this Dick can’t and won’t do that for him. I am prepared to hunker down and dig out all the Batdad and Batson feelings that this arc will give me and, if nothing else, holy shit, that is some very stunningly gorgeous art in Nightwing #50 and those panels from the Annual where Bruce hauls him off are off the charts Batdad Feelings. Maybe this arc will eventually reveal itself to be garbage, but for now HOLY SHIT THAT IS SOME PRIME QUALITY READING MATERIAL RIGHT THERE.

Do you remember your reaction when you were reading the issue Dick got shot in the head?

Well I already knew Dick was going to get shot in the head before I read the issue (or maybe I just knew he was going to have head trauma of some kind idr) because of comic previews/news and such, so that aspect wasn't shocking in any way. I also remember not being a fan of how King wrote Dick's excessive jokey demeanor in that issue. I know Dick was doing it to cheer Bruce up because Bruce got stood up at the altar and all but ehhh the way it was written annoyed me.

Bruce absolutely breaking down over the loss of Jason and taking it out on Dick, the most available and easy target in this moment. Blaming anyone else because he can’t bear the weight nor admit the guilt he feels—that his statements should be directed at himself. Bruce feels resentment at himself that he never adopted Dick like he did Jason.

Also, I appreciate the slowly distancing fade out of the last several panels as a visual display of the emotional reflection Dick’s living in this moment with the batcave as an allegory of the tumultuous upheaval the bat mantel has wrought on the family in the here and now.

Summary: Post-New Teen Titans #55. Bruce apologizes to Dick.

Love, Bruce believes, is a muscle.

He’s intimately familiar with fine-tuning and strengthening every part of his body to withstand all that Gotham throws at him. But this muscle—Bruce has gone so long without using it that it atrophied. It’s weak, practically useless. But it’s still there and that has to count for something. That’s why he picks up the phone and calls Dick.

He runs his dry tongue against the roof of his mouth, tasting the words he has yet to say. The silence on the other end of the line weighs on him. Bruce is surprised that Dick hasn’t hung up yet. He’s done it before, his teenage rebellion mixing like oil to Bruce’s water. He’s done it abruptly when the Titans have a mission to complete, he’s done it distractedly when he wanted to get the conversation over with to go out on a date with Koriand’r, and he’s done it angrily when they both said things they didn’t mean. Bruce has called only once since . . . since. Dick never picked up, and it was understandable.

My boi, the first robin

lol yeah

man that reminds me how marv wolfman gave a bunch of conflicting info in early post-crisis for the age dick was when he became robin. basically jim starlin and a few other writers established a bunch of consistent timeline stuff, but then marv wolfman contradicted it.

shit lemme check the specifics on that.

according to starlin, dick was robin for 6 years, and he stopped working with bruce when he was 19 (batman #416). jason was 9 at that point btw (confirmed in q&a section, consistent with several panels).

according to wolfman, dick was robin for....almost 12 years (new teen titans #55). big difference there buddy! that number could actually work with an itty bitty 8 year old robin. however, starlin said bruce had been batman for under 10 years around that same time (batman: the cult). lmao

then after jason's death wolfman said that only 10 years had passed since the death of dick's parents (batman year 3). this number is a bit less insane, but it still conflicts with the claim that bruce had supposedly been batman for over 2 years at the time.

wolfman implied that dick became robin when he was 13 (lonely place of dying), and that makes sense with the numbers starlin gave in batman #416. dick started at 13, was robin for 6 years, left when he was 19. it checks out. plus if you add up dick's 6 years as robin and jason's 3 years spent with bruce, that gives us about 10 years worth of batman. keep in mind that dick had a 6 month training period (lonely place of dying, also matches jason's info).

from there, we can choose to ignore one of two conflicting claims in order to make the timeline coherent: A. bruce had been batman for only 10 years around the time of jason's death --> change it to 12 years B. bruce met dick after he had been batman for over 2 years --> change it to under 1 year

personally i prefer to maintain starlin's info from batman the cult, so bruce would have to have met dick during his 1st year as batman.

ANYWAY TLDR: dick started being robin when he was 13 in early post-crisis canon, but marv wolfman messed up and said he was 8 once
