Screaming into the void about Nightwing and Huntress. They’re two of the most wholly, almost religiously, dedicated people to the cause. One is ostracized for her methods and is often alone, the other is trusted and beloved by nearly the entire vigilante/hero community (and by Bruce). Still, they are both lonely. Neither of them have faith in the other. Neither of them will change their core beliefs. They can’t talk for long without arguing. Batman hangs around both their necks like a rosary or a chain or an omen. They clash and bicker exhaustively. They care so much it’s painful. It isn’t enough. They’re drawn to one another and it means something but it doesn’t matter because they will each always be more devoted to something the other is not fully privy too. They know this. They know this in the same way they know they can look each other in the face, orphan to orphan, and find the same steely resolve reflected there. It isn’t enough.

They’re buddies though.

one of my more controversial comic opinions is that Helena Bertinelli canonically is the character the fandom thinks Jason Todd is, but unfortunately fanon Batfam stans would rather invent this fiction of Jason's morality and interpersonal relationships than acknowledge the character who actually acts like that and has those relationships

She's friends with Babs, had a close relationship with Tim and semi-regularly teamed up with him, she has the edgy personality and canonical major soft spot for kids and abused women, she uses ranged weaponry, she's a devout Catholic, she's ok with killing people and regularly tells Bruce to fuck off......she's literally everything the fandom seems to want out of Jason lmfao

And while I’m on Huntress posting hours, I’ve got to say, she really just does get no respect! Like, I keep reading her stuff and she has to beg and bleed for every inch that Batman gives her. She has to beg Batman to get medical help for a guy in the Fear of Faith storyline in No Man’s Land. He fires her from wearing the Bat in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #120 for not heeling to him, for not accomplishing the impossible. She has to nearly die in a desperate fight against the joker for him to even give her a modicum of praise.

And in the end what does that even matter! He still thinks she murders the dude in Cry for Blood. I just want to tell her that it’s not worth it girl! Don’t trap yourself in the cycle of trying to wring respect out of Batman! He’s an ass! You won’t get it!

rereading batman/huntress: cry for blood after literal years just makes me feel some kinda way. its like casually one of the best huntress comics i’ve ever read. it’s got huntress and question together who honestly just make me want to go feral. tim is the saving grace of the batfamily because hes so damn smart but also is the only one with even an ounce of emotional intelligence for some reason. greg rucka wrote it. he also wrote the old guard. what the fuck

This character MADE No Man’s Land for me. She’s so complex and really helps balance out the hero community in Gotham City as someone that’s never fully trusted or given a chance by Batman. Some of the best storylines of the event imo were ones that had Helena as a major player and/or were written by either Devin Grayson or Greg Rucka and those two circles have a lot of overlap, so Helena’s arc really is a goldmine in what I consider to be a mostly bloated and underwhelming mega-crossover event

I thought Cry for Blood was incredible the first time I read it but going back after finishing NML, seeing Helena call out Bruce and Dick by extension is even more satisfying. I need to read more of Helena’s stuff at some point, especially her solo, but for now she remains one of the few characters that will lure me out of my self-imposed batbooks quarantine. I love watching her be put in situations where her integrity is on the line because there will always be people (cough 🦇 cough) that see the worst in her no matter her intentions or the good she’s done, so ultimately all she can do is make choices that she can live with according to her values, no one else’s
