Reading 90s Batman comics and events has given me an appreciation for a smaller Batfamily. I’m reading Batman: Legacy right now and it only has Batman, Nightwing, Tim Drake Robin and Huntress and the way they bounce off each other and the story is able to focus on each of them (except really Huntress) and shows their dynamic without it feeling super bloated with 10 different characters all having to do something is nice. It feels more concise and focused.

It really was a lovely day in Paris.

“—Ra’s will want to target some place with lots of people, something touristy,” Tim was saying.

Shame Dick couldn’t enjoy it more. “Indoors too,” he said. “Less air circulation.”

Tim nodded. “There’s the Louvre, and also—” he started coughing.

Dick froze. “Are you…?”

It didn’t last long. “I’m fine,” Tim said quickly.

“If you’re—”

“I’m not sick. I feel fine.”

“Tim.”

“It’s just the air.” He shrugged. “Cigarette smoke.”

“If you’re sure…”

“I am. Look, we need to focus.”

“Right.” Dick breathed out. The stakes were too high for them to lose.

People talk more about Batman: Contagion than its sequel, but that scene in Legacy where Tim feels so hopeless about becoming terminally ill that he almost gives up fighting when they’re about to die but Bruce saves him because Bruce refuses to let him die even if he doesn’t want to live and believes he won’t survive…it’s so potent.

The first page shows Bruce as Batman and Tim as Robin, treading water and surrounded by walls on all sides. Bruce says, “Get your cape off. It’s too much weight.” Tim takes off the cape and asks, “Can you see the top?” Bruce replies, “The tank is enclosed. Probably a hatch of some kind.” Tim: “quh—getting harder to paddle. Can’t feel my legs.” Bruce: “Just hold on until we reach the top. That hatch most likely leads to a well chamber.” Tim: “nuh—not sure I can. Arms feel like lead—” Tim spits out water, then continues, “I’m dead anyway, right? Sooner or later, the Clench is coming back with a vuh-vengeance.” Bruce looks at him and says, “You’re just going to give up on yourself? That’s not your decision to make, Robin. Not as long as we’re partners.”

The second page shows the water has risen closer to the hatch at the top. Tim says, “Enough air pressure to—to—kill us—” Tim’s mouth goes underwater, and Bruce turns his head to look from where he’s pressing his bat vest against the hatch. He yells, “Robin!” He grabs Tim and holds Tim’s head above water as his nose starts to bleed, saying, “Damn the physics—we’re not going to die. We’re not.” The water rises to their chins, both their noses bleed and Bruce grits his teeth as he continues, “I…won’t…let us!” The next panel shows the hatch flying off with a “whuff!”

The third page shows a sopping wet Bruce, without his shirt, carrying a similarly wet but unconscious Tim over one shoulder as he climbs out of the hole in the floor. The background shows they’re in the ruins of an old structure. End IDs.

i really really love leonardo romero's inks and jordie bellaire's colors from the "i am the gun" mini telling the zur-en arrh backstory (in batman issues #128-130), so this is another loose style study

i had this frame in mind specifically, altho i couldnt quite commit to the hard inks

ALSO the concept was loosely based off the issues in legacy ('tec (1940) #698-99) where tim goes undercover and then gets nabbed by lockup and his comm cuts off in the middle of telling nightwing what's going on, which also gave us this great (but misleading) cover

The Batkids compete with each other to do Batman imitations.

Steph makes him too dark and overbearing, and Jason simultaneously makes him emotionally constipated and gruffly mushy. Dick does a decent impression of Batman dealing with Hal, which sets off Tim enough that he can't stop laughing long enough to get through his. Duke's take is wildly off, bordering on a caricature, and Dick makes them all howl by doing a starry-eyed Robin accompaniment. Cass channels his exact angry dad body language, and is considered to be the best until they all get floored by Damian's perfect imitation of Bruce's voice.

Dick Grayson is one of my favorite DC characters but it doesn't stop me from occasionally re-reading Detective Comics #700 and laughing at him getting wrecked throughout the entire issue.

It shouldn't be as funny as it is but it's also amusing to me since it's interspersed with scenes of Tim being concerned for him while Bruce is like "he's fine he can take care of himself.

Yet meanwhile the dude looks like this

Tim, Dick and Bruce’s relationship and teamwork in the 90s was awesome. I don’t feel any of the themes they do constantly nowadays with Bruce not trusting his protégés for whatever reason. They all feel competent too, like Nightwing or Robin aren’t the brunt of Joel’s they all feel like they’ve been training to do this and they work well together. The banter, the teamwork, the costumes it’s all great.

Yo, a Batman!Helena fic for my Legacy AU.

Excerpt:

It had been eight days since Helena had seen Batman. Eight days since he’d left her in charge of the city while he went off on a quest to fix the latest plague to hit Gotham. Six days since Oracle had called her up and told her that there was a ship in the harbor that she needed to infiltrate now . Five days since the news had announced that a cure had been found for the resurgence of the Clench and would everyone please come in and have it administered. Zero days since the last time the signal had gone up and she was the only one to answer.

“If I don’t make it, Gotham’s yours.” That had been the last thing he’d told her.

She’d laughed it off at the time, said “Gee, thanks,” as he’d swung off into the night. She’d even meant it a little, in spite of her tone and the fact that Gotham was a God-forsaken, crime-ridden, hotspot of disease and depravity. It was just about trust, that was all it was supposed to be. About the fact that the acknowledgement was more than she’d ever thought she’d get from him, even with the caveat that he’d made it clear on no uncertain terms that the only reason he was asking her was because there was literally nobody else.

He wasn’t supposed to mean it.

But here Helena was, over a week later, crisis averted, and Batman still hadn’t shown up to grunt and tell her she’d done it all wrong instead of thanking her. And sure, maybe he wasn’t finished yet with whatever had needed to be done. Maybe he’d show up with Nightwing and Robin and she’d go back to being the vigilante no one worked with.

Maybe pigs would fly.

On day eight, Helena came to the decision that maybe, just maybe, Batman wasn’t coming back. On day nine, she started a new costume.
