3 000 000. Those were the days… (1943)
Some later figures for the Batman comic book:
(A lot of them are estimates, and counted in different ways, and of course excludes digital which weren’t an issue back in the days; so it is honesty difficult and probably kind of unfair to compare. But still kind of fun to look at.)
1960: 502,000 (source comichron.com)
1966: 898,470 (source comichron.com)
1972: 185,283 (source comichron.com)
1982: 108,234 (source comichron.com)
1985: 75,303 (source comichron.com)
1987: 193,000 (source comichron.com)
January 1995: 40,000 (source: comichron.com)
January 2000: 50,979 (source: comichron.com)
January 2005: 58,513 (source: comichron.com)
January 2010: 63,467 (source: comichron.com)
January 2015: 110,232 (source: comichron.com)
January 2020: 80,053 (source: comichron.com)
August 2021: 118,000 units (source: comicbookrevolution.com)
September 2021: 116,000 (source: comicbookrevolution.com)
Lately, DC has changed their distribution metod and it’s difficult to find estimates of number of sold copies. icv2.com and comicbookrevolution.com publish sales charts that are based on point-of-sale by the ComicHub system at stores selling American comics around the world. According to them, Batman havs been among the three-four best selling title the last couple of months. If comics sells about as much in 2022 as they did in August-September 2021, that would probably be somewhere between 110,000 and 150,000 units.

Batmania would have been a very very apt name for Melbourne
Please excuse the cryptid-ass quality of the video

batman: two-face strikes twice! #2.2
[ID: An extreme close-up of Batman's face. The entire panel has a blue hue and his cowl lenses makes his eyes appear entirely white, with a small glint on one side. He asks himself, "Of course...! How could I have been so blind...?" END ID]

Therapy
Tim has been seeing a therapist, and he decided to listen. Finally.
Disclaimer: I am not a psychiatrist and I just heard on Tiktok about the therapy part of this drabble. The tiktok account was from Dr. Julie.
(Warning: swear words)
Tim knows he is a messed up human being. Being a child crime fighter and then being an orphan is really cool, and depressing at the same time.
Tim has witnessed a lot of stuff that will put people in a lot of trauma. He just quirky like that. But one therapy session definitely change a lot of his thoughts.
It started as a casual therapy of Timothy expected and when she pull out two fish tanks and a toy fish, he was impressed.
"Timothy, pretend that this fish is you." his therapist said as she crank the toy and dropped it in the water tank. "Imagine that this fish tank is your life. When you were born, it's clear and not a single dirty thing in it, but once you grow up, problems starts to create and it can be toxic to you." she explained as she dripped a bottle of brown liquid to the tank. "If the fish is living in a toxic environment, the fish will eventually get sick." she said as she pulled the fish out of the water.
"You pull out the fish of that toxic environment and put in a new clean environment," she said as she dropped the fish to the clear water, "...and it helps. It gets better. But once you return the fish to the dirty tank, it doesn't matter how clean the water in the other tank, it will eventually wear down the fish."
Timothy can see where this is going.
"The fish is you. You were neglected in your younger years and then everything got taken away from you. With everything got stacked up in your life, it gotten more and more toxic, you need to change your environment, Timothy. Take a break for a week, be selfish for a moment and see if it can help you." she said and they end the therapy there.
Timothy should not even thinking about getting a vacation, crime doesn't stop just because you are depressed. But her words echoed through his mind, "Be selfish for a moment." and he filed for a leave of absence and he doesn't wait for it to be approved as he took a flight to Melbourne. He is insane for taking a flight at the other side of Gotham, but he felt it, the electrifying sensation that he once felt running around the Gotham taking pictures of Batman.
He felt thrill and adrenaline in his veins and he found himself smiling at this feeling.
+++++
Melbourne is amazing, except for spiders and the fucking city was almost called Batmania, fucking hell.
That week was spent on sleeping and just sight-seeing and honestly, he wanted to take a break from now.
But just like what his therapist said, no matter how clear the water during his break, now that he is in the toxic tank, he was already tired.
The glare that he got from Bruce and Dick is a little degrading and Alfred's disappointed face was the last string that snap that made him finally realise that he doesn't need them to be happy. He doesn't need a 'family' that the reason of him to go to the therapy.
This is the muddy water for him. Not just the Wayne Manor but the whole Gotham.
He was still in the middle of a lecture of Bruce's when he whipped a white envelope with his resignation letter on it. He is resigning to everything that has connection to Gotham or even the America itself. He just smiled at Bruce and left the cave to go to the garage of the Manor where his Jaguar is.
He sort of black out what happen because the next thing he knew was that he was in a plane to Taiwan. He has no idea but he have a suitcase and himself. He smiled at himself and he is letting the fate be his navigator in this chapter of his life.

Before the name 'Melbourne' was chosen for the Australian city, be aware that other interim names that the colonizers called it included:
Please note that long before it was named, the land where the Melbourne CBD now sits was (and still is) known as 'Naarm' by the indigenous First Peoples who lived there.

for the reverse tropes - I would love to see some bat related nursing home au, that just sounds amazing lol
"If you steal my favorite checkers game one more time, Hood, I will personally make sure the staff finds your switchblades."
Dick "Nightwing" Grayson leaned back in the most comfortable armchair in the common room of the Batmania Nursing Home in Gotham City. Across the table sat Jason Todd, often referred to as Red Hood, since - according to his own fairy tales - he used to be a feared gangster, back before the second hip replacement and the accident on the ice skating rink.
"As if. Nobody's afraid of you, twinkletoes. Just because you used to do gymnastics... doesn't mean jackshit now." Jason pointed the cane leaning next to Dick's chair, an elegant thing made from mahogany, it's handle shaped like a bird about to take flight.
"Gentleman, let's try to get along, yes? Anyone up for a game of chess?" Barbara Gordon's white hair was bound back into a stern up-do, the young nurse wheeling her towards the table barely visible in the presence of Batmania's very own Oracle. Rumor had it that there was nothing Barbara didn't know - and so far that had held true.
"I don't think we have time for chess today, Babs."
"Why? Are you scared, Grayson?"
"No, today is Thursday."
"Ah, you're right." Barbara smiled, all three of them having come into the common room for a reason after all. Jason had even put down his book (some brick by David Graeber), another weapon surely hidden somewhere on his body, in anticipation of what was to come.
Because on Thursdays all three of them welcomed their favorite visitor.
Young Timothy Drake, almost twenty by now. He'd started coming around some years ago, as an afterschool project his parents signed him up to, and now he visited once a week just to see his three favorite old-timers.
And it was quite obvious why they enjoyed his presence so much.
He talked to them.
Better yet, he told them stories.
"Okay, so last time I was here, Red Hood had just returned from the dead to lay claim on Gotham and take revenge on Batman, yes?"
"Finally someone appreciates how badass I am."
"You're not, Todd."
Dick grinned, leaning forward as if to hear Tim better, even though his hearing hadn't left him yet. Jason flipped him off, not daring to loudly interrupt again out of fear that Tim would stop his story.
"Well, the Red Hood is certainly trying to appear daunting in this particular story."
"And where am I in this, Tim?"
"Oh, Oracle is busy in her tower. Have I never told you about the Birds of Prey?"
Timothy Drake was smiling, the rapt attention of his audience invigorating. Barbara shook her head, and he took her hand, ready to guide her into the favorite part of this majestic and heroic universe he had created specifically for them:
Batman. Nightwing. Red Hood. Robin. And, of course, Oracle.
A story just for them.
~
I hope you enjoyed that :D It was certainly fun to come up with!!!! And thank you so much!! <3 <3 <3

What's your biggest comic book unpopular opinion?
Thanks 😊
Batman….WAY TOO MANY BOOKS, mainly books directly starring him
Both canonical/maninline and elseworlds, he’s got too much. This isn’t 1989 or 2008 anymore. There’s not that strong of a Batmania going on anymore
Cut back the amount of books starring him to his solo and Detective Comics, and even then for Detective Comics he’s not the only star. Make it a freaking anthology for the rest of the Batfamily or even other pulp/detctive based heroes including the Question or even the GPD
@confusedhummingbird Thanks for the ask, it’s appreciated XD

The Batman Ball Pen (I'm pretty sure they meant "ballpoint") from the height of Batmania.
Back in the 1960s that was a pretty hefty price for a pen, even if it could "write a mile!!!!" A dollar in 1966 is the equivalent of $9.29 in 2024.

Frankly if you asked me, all of that unnecessary misdirection and twists that left poor Tim at the ‘make him angsty and edgier’ block for later writers to force upon him was the result of the whole darker and edgier train that permeated not just the Batbooks but the whole industry throughout the decade he was in.
Basically short, in my honest opinion, Tim Drake was the perfect character at the absolutely wrong time.
The 90s edgier nonsense (as foreshadowed by the marvelous competition’s hefty promotion of Venom, Cable and other like minded antiheroes, Early Image having a foundation built on that) made possible with the Batmania (since he’s naturally the perfect candidate for darker and edgier due to both his gothic aesthetic and his insane popularity) unfortunately gave the writers of that era and the 2000s the impression that since it’s Gotham, things in universe are just miserable and sucky
And since Tim lives in Gotham, despite meant to be the counter to that misery that permeates the city he helps defend, it was only a matter of time before that wrong impression got to him too
It’s why to this day, my preferred Tim Drake is that original Fanboy we saw in A Lonely Place of Dying since in the end, that’s what he’s meant to be, beginner or not and why I am still reluctant to get anything Dixon related on both him and Nightwing since those runs are built on that train of thought that says misery in setting and edgier characters means compelling and mature storytelling, especially in Gotham’
I know, long winded, I just needed to vent. You may ignore this if you wish to
Bro, I just asked #cats what a raw potato tasted like, I don't feel like ignoring much.
And, I wouldn't say Tim was in the wrong time. He has his great successes in the 90s. The main reason he's talked about past people's obsession with one story in Red Robin, that has slowly lost popularity 'cause of people realizing it wasn't the best Tim--is 'cause of the 90s.
There was plenty of people who were sick of the big overexaggerated 90s crap even if it did infest Tim a bit when they'd draw him way buffer than he was clearly meant to be.
It's all just a matter of writers with the ability to do better either not advancing to the right places in comics, or throwing their talents down the toilet to be there.
It's all about good writing. That's it, really, that's the big secret.
Why is Dick a massive joke of a character now? 'Cause the writing got bad.
Why did Batman look like a total maniac more like usual for a while? 'Cause the writing got bad.
Why is Damian totally unrecognizable a lot of the time on nearly every single level for over a decade now(Though I have heard some aspects like art have been getting better, or so I've seen thankfully, but I'm still not trusting that all the way because now this fucking fucking hell)? 'Cause the work got bad.
Why is Jason just a fan fic edgy woobie fuck a lot of the time now? 'Cause the writing got bad.
How did Steph go from edgy, determined, "vigilante vixen", who was morally kinda questionable at times go to acting like a 12-year-old sometimes? 'Cause the writing got bad.
No matter what in the end. It's all down to the writing, and also art.
There's always been good movies in every decade no matter the taste, because people with true talent and knowledge, and know-how where out there to make so happen.
Comics being a dwindling medium that's how a down-turn in quality going on for a long time? It's just not a business worth getting into anymore. Passion or not, people just aren't good writers. And that can happen in any era.
But back to the main point, Tim was at his most popular in the 90s in an era you wouldn't think he'd fit into with all the Rob Liefeld stuff. Like he got an 80-page-giant in the late 90s over some characters you think would actually get one because he was so naturally popular.
But what made him work then isn't dated. It's timeless. They just haven't had good enough writers to make him work, and it sucks, but it's how it is.
The reason Tim really got changed so much isn't down to tastes in an era. It's down to the taste of a few people in specific positions. Things that made Tim work were still working wonders in other places.
