I just finished a reread of Jonathan Hickman's FF and Avengers runs, since before I'd only ever been reading one half and had missed a lot of context, and them plus Secret Wars form one of my favourite extended marvel arcs ever made. Any thoughts about the storyline, or general perceptions you know others have had of it? I'm kind of curious whether it was loved or hated by the broader fanbase.
I enjoyed what I read of it, which was mostly the tail end- Secret Wars Proper and some of the stuff immediately leading into that. One thing that I appreciated about it, in a general sense, was that it posited the chickens finally, finally coming home to roost; the nature of the Marvel Universe is that the center is always gonna hold, because otherwise they can't keep selling comic books, but the subtext of every Marvel comic I read through the early-to-mid oughts, and during the Bendis-era Avengers-Disassembled-through-Siege mega-arc in particular, was that the planet was living on borrowed time due to the sheer volume of these self-righteous superpowered yahoos running around doing basically whatever they wanted. I'm principally a Wormblogger, I love Worm, and the fact that Worm actually acknowledged and depicted that collapse, after a decade-and-change of Marvel dancing around the idea, is a big part of why it hooked me so deeply. And thus, when you have an event about how reality is finally collapsing under the accumulated weight of all these retcons and reality-shifts and time-jumps and what-have-you, a story where the superheroes finally can't outrun the consequences of their actions via editorial mandate- well, it was cathartic. And the Battleworld, conceptually, was great. I enjoyed a lot of those tie-ins immensely; it was the summer of Fun Little Romps (even though it was markedly part of the defanging of the Marvel Zombies brand- but that's another post.) The downside, of course, is that it derailed the storylines of a bunch of different smaller books I was following at the time- Cullen Bunn's Magneto solo, Duggan's Deadpool Run, Punisher, Silver Surfer, The original run of Ms. Marvel. Like, I can't stress enough how early in the original Ms. Marvel run this event happened, like maybe the third or fourth TPB? She'd barely gotten going when Secret Wars hit. Some of these just awkwardly wedged a couple issues about the apocalypse in, but not all of these came back afterwards either. It's fully possible that at least a couple of these were flagging and the apocalypse was just a graceful offramp, but it still bothered me. It was the most exaggerated instance of the common complaint about crisis crossovers stepping on the toes of the ongoing storylines that I've ever experienced in real time, and you know, fair, it was at least a bit about that phenomenon, but it's not not annoying just because it's also self-aware!

Earth-22191
Home to Margo Kess (Spider-Byte). A reality where Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) was never found responsible for Gwen Stacy’s murder. He would go on to become mayor of New York City while Peter Parker (Spider-Man) retired and passed his mantle onto his clone, Ben Reiley.
After the destruction of this reality by an Incursion, a segment of this Earth was used to form a region on the multiversal Battleworld known as Arachnia, where it housed the remnants of the Web of Life and Destiny.
This reality was later restored with the rest of the Multiverse, by which time it had an active cyberspace community.
First mentioned/appearance: Spider-Verse vol 2 #1 (2015)

Also I finally read Planet Hulk (2015) I'm not the biggest comic person but oh man when they're good they're awesome and this one RULES and also hurts the heart so bad. Spent forever trying to figure out how it fits into chronology only to realize it's just a fuckin epic standalone spinoff from the 2015 Secret Wars which although Steve&Bucky-less are undeniably sweet too.

Clandestine Meetings
| Pairing: SamBucky | Rating: T | WC: 1.3K |
Summary: Sam Wilson of the Thor Corps of Doomsgard keeps meeting with Bucky Barnes of the A-Force of Arcadia. At first, it was about keeping the peace and exchanging information. But now... it's more. And Sam wished he was more conflicted about it, but he's not.
Excerpt:
“Come here often?” Sam grinned despite himself. Bucky leaned on an aqueduct, half-hidden by the shadows. There was something about meeting him here. Every time. A jolt of excitement from their clandestine arrangement despite it being nothing more than an exchange of information. Sam and Bucky trying to broker peace between the A-Force of Arcadia and the Thor Corps of Doomsgard. There had always been shaky ground. It made sense to try to work together to stop any fights from breaking out between them. Or at least. It had started that way. More and more, it had become… talking. Hanging out. On the outskirts of Arcadia. In an aqueduct. Like two very normal people.

Hail Hydra by Rick Remender & David Mandel
"'That no matter what you did, no matter how hard you fought, there was no chance you'd ever leave the world changed in the same way they did?' 'That's all I've ever felt, Ellie. I've just never heard anyone else articulate it quite as well.' 'Only their children could appreciate what it's like to grow up in the shadow of their legacy."
Year Read: 2023
Rating: 3/5
Thoughts: At a glance, the Battleworld series is an odd amalgamation of alternate-Earth scenarios and team-ups you wouldn't necessarily expect to see in 616, along a similar line as the What If? comic run and Disney+ show. I doubt I'll read through the whole thing, since it goes on forever and spans characters I don't have a lot of interest in, and it seems like the kind of thing where people can pick and choose the ones that appeal to them without losing a lot of continuity. I'll probably give Marvel Zombies (because zombies) and Planet Hulk (because Stucky) a try, but that's about all that's jumped out at me so far.
Obviously, I chose this one because I have a soft spot for Ian Rogers (Nomad) and all of Steve's other-Earth children. This is one of the only places we get to see Steve and Sharon's daughter, Ellie, and I adore her in spite of her totally incongruous, midriff-baring outfit. Despite the relatively short page-time, I like her sibling relationship with Ian and the way they bond over living up to the Cap legacy. There's a bit more on Ian and Steve's relationship as adults that's interesting too. Naturally, the characters are the real draw of the collection for me. Including Venom as a villain felt completely out of place, but what the hell-- we're already down the rabbit hole in Hydraworld.
And wow, is it grim. I wasn't expecting rainbows out of a Marvel Earth that's essentially ruled by Nazis, and it's every bit as dark as you'd expect and then some. There's no real winning for the heroes, just a question of how badly they're going to lose, and it's hard to watch them struggle against the hopelessness of overturning a fascist system that's already so deeply rooted. There isn't a lot of hope here, but it does give Ian some perspective on the fight Steve Rogers has been fighting all his life in 616 and why it matters. I very much did not enjoy the last issue from Hydra agent Hank Johnson's perspective, satire or not.

Battleworld Encounter Quotes - Luz
I did Battleworld a long time ago, so if you don't know what that is, it's just my rip off of Dissidia using Disney TV characters.
But since this is a lumity blog (and I'm the only one who cares), I just it would make sense to only do Luz's quotes. So here's what they say to Luz and what Luz says to them.
Luz Encounter Quotes
-
Luz Noceda: Friend to owls and titans. Anne Boonchuy: Friend to frogs. And toads. And newts, I guess.
-
Luz Noceda: Magic isn't bad. It's just who's using it. Star Butterfly: Paper magic? Without a wand?
-
Luz Noceda: Anything in that journal about portals? Mabel Pines: I wanna do magic. Teach me! Teach me! Dipper Pines: Please don't.
-
Luz Noceda: And people said that a human doing magic was impossible. Kim Possible: I'd turn down the drama if I were you.
-
Luz Noceda: Connecticut Witch Luz Noceda doesn't have the same ring to it. Jake Long: Yo girl, you about to head into the dragon house.
-
Luz Noceda: Luz Noceda, 9th Grade Witch. Kind of a mouthful. Randy Cunningham: Magic? You're honking my cheese. That is so Bruce.
-
Luz Noceda: Don't you think you should go full-time? Penn Zero: So does that make you a part-time witch?
