Day 17 of Doodling Tolkien!
Low motivation day, so here’s a lil Kiliel doodle whilst I battle it out with the next comic page!
They go to the same music school, and Kili is head over heels, completely inconsolably, wretchedly crushing on his stand partner.
She thinks it’s funny :P
I have another doodle started of two nearby violinists, which happen to be one concert master Legolas Greenleaf and 2nd chair 1st violin Fili Durinson, and their mutual revulsion (albeit for different reasons)

U.S. audiences enjoy survival horror stories with Asians in Asia, like Squid Game and Battle Royale. But they don’t want to acknowledge that Asian Americans’ lived reality is a survival horror too.
I have mixed feelings about Squid Game's success. I enjoy the survival horror genre as both a writer and consumer, but seeing how non-Asian U.S. audiences reacted to it in the midst of violent anti-Asian hate crimes left me wondering about the reason for the show's U.S. appeal.
Violence against Asians—particularly when done en masse—is so normalized that I wonder if this type of media provides catharsis to racists. News of hate crimes might briefly force them to feel guilty, but when they see fictional violence against Asians, they can cheer for it. It's as if it evokes the imagery Americans are most familiar with: slaughtering Asians by the dozens or even thousands, a legacy of numerous U.S. wars in Asia. The victims are nameless and unimportant. They're just a statistic, a plot point. One more to add to the body count.
Also, the U.S. loves using Asians in Asia as media replacements for AsAms. It simultaneously reinforces Asians as perpetual foreigners, and prevents giving a microphone to the type of Asian American who would unflinchingly discuss anti-Asian racism and challenge the status quo.
Asian men especially are seen as disposable targets with no humanity and no purpose other than to be mocked and slaughtered on screen. Deadpool, Daredevil, Avengers, Bullet Train, Kill Bill, etc. feature scenes where a protagonist cuts down hordes of Asian men in seconds.
This has real-life consequences. Hate crimes against AAPI men have been purposely belittled, hidden, and ignored—even in media narratives that purport to draw attention to anti-Asian racism. It becomes a feedback loop that double-victimizes AAPI men. (see my data thread)
The hatred of Asian men is so normalized that in AsAm spaces the only acceptable Asian male victim to publicly mention is Vincent Chin, who was murdered 40 years ago. There have been many Vincent Chins since then. But victims get reduced to headlines like "killed over duck sauce.”
Instead, when anti-Asian hate crimes are discussed, it's limited to a narrow range of experience, privileging East Asian women over pretty much all other Asians. This erasure is harmful on many levels and has still not been corrected or even acknowledged. (see my data thread)
I think many AsAms feel like Asian Twitter recently died. But for me, it died several years ago, when Asians with media power decided that all of this harm and imbalance was not only normal, but good. Our community has been broken for a long time. They don't want to fix it.
So does this mean Squid Game, Battle Royale, etc. are bad stories? No. It means we need better real-life conversations and efforts to understand what anti-Asian racism is and how to fix it. Survival horror is a fun thought experiment—until you realize you're living in one.

the effort and dedication they put into yunjin’s design and story quest is just proof that they have the resources to actually research and respect cultures they use, sumeru isn’t just poorly designed they literally didn’t care about paying respect to the right cultural sources.
southern asia is huge. you can’t just overlap and use cultures from different countries into one horrendous mix. it would have been easy to split parts of sumeru into different cultures, have specific areas be focused on specific cultures—it’s not like they don’t have the resources or the dedication. diversity and proper representation shouldn’t be something players have to beg for

‘A black person being uwufied would make conservatives mad so ignore the racism’ isn’t a take I thought I’d see, but considering their scapegoating of the victims of police brutality and the way they tried to claim that we all have to be a united front with absolutely no disagreements bc ‘conservatives hate us anyways’ I’m not very fucking surprised.
I think it’s really fucking funny how their advice is that we should ignore racism in order to prop up queer representation, and they said it in the same post that they said they weren’t using queerness as a shield against racism. That’s exactly what you’re doing. You literally said ‘it may be racist but it’s gay so you can’t be that upset’. Telling black people to put how they feel about slave owners being shown in a positive light on the back burner bc said slave owners are being shown as queer is fucking weird. It not only ignores black queer ppl, but makes me wonder when y’all would ever do the same 💀 get fucked

I can't believe somebody looked at Jade Warriors and said "we need to do that but make the women look even more insectoid." I think the one in the back left is actually shedding her legs.

that perception-altering epiphany when you realize that men trying to teach you what "real" feminism actually is about doesn't come from a genuine desire to educate oneself and be an ally to the cause. on the contrary, it's rather a subtle way for them to control the opposition when repeated endeavors to stomp out the opposition altogether have failed.
men's presumptuous and patronizing notions about "true feminism" betray their ill-concealed intention to shave off the most subversive, radical, challenging and uncomfortable parts of feminist theory and practice, leaving only a watered down sugarcoated convenient status quo-friendly version as the harmless byproduct of their obtrusive polluting interjection. they are not allies, they do not come in peace. they're trying to sabotage the feminist revolution from the inside while simultaneously selling themselves as well-meaning good-natured egalitarians threatened by our so-called misandry (again, the zillionth attempt at shutting us up with tone policing and reversed victim/oppressor narrative)

I genuinely admire the patience you have with this blog some of these ppl are fucking mental and the patience you have to host so many polls lol
Dare I say... it used to be so much worse around here. If anyone's new around here and wants some blog lore, it's worth reading through the tags #disc horse, #jike :), #damon albarn, #gruncharov, or just the entire #most attractive 90s musician (if you have, like, a couple hours to spare and a strong stomach). Might as well take a trip into the tags of this poll, I dare you.
I cannot believe I survived all that 😭
