Hunith: [to Merlin] Destiny isn't a path anyone follows blindly. It is always a matter of choice, and sometimes the heart speaks loudest. Listen to your heart, because that's where your true destiny lies.

Gaius and Merlin were the most powerful class traitors of magic who were complicit in the actions of their genocidal bigot bosses just because they believe in one big dumb prophecy.
Gaius taught Merlin to distrust other magic users, to not help them, to hide himself and just devote himself to the crown.
Tbf to merlin he was just 16-18 when all these just started. He was too young. He wasn’t ready. He was sent to the most dangerous place for people like him. He was impressionable. His heart was too good. He was too moldable.
He took “I will not fall into anger and rage like Morgana” too far to the point where he couldn’t even find his voice against Arthur who was still relentlessly chasing down and killing his people anymore. He put all his eggs into the biggest bigot in their universe because the magic world told him that the guy was the hottest sht. Merlin was so broken down, so brainwashed, so indoctrinated that he still continued to forgive even after years of getting dismissed, insulted, derided and abused and only shown rare bouts of kindness by his supposed best friend in the universe.
Arthur didn’t deserve any of that devotion. As king he still persecuted and treated magic folk like shit. He blamed them for their own oppression, never accepted his father’s actions as wrong, showed no remorse in arresting and killing their women and children (shut up he only made promises to a frkn ghost), refused to learn more about their ways despite having the biggest knowledge base in albion, continued to imprisoned them for existing, calling them the most disgusting slurs, using their magic techniques recklessly for himself and still called magic “evil” when they don’t work.....and then played victim when he got called out by the oppressed magic folk.
It’s such a shame that Merlin hoped and believed in his potential after everything. Merlin could never truly relate to magic folk after all. The only people left alive who truly loved him made sure of that. His mother raised him to fear and hide himself. His mentor taught him how to be the judge and be the arbiter of life and death not only over the kingdom but also the magic folk. He was overworked and pressured to the point that he had no free time for himself. He was supposed to be the strongest warlock but he only had enough time to receive education from the dude who hasnt practiced sorcery for 20 years when he should have beenseeking out other magic users and learning from them. His life was constantly dictated by the big magic institutions who never give him the tools to actually start their liberation, only empty promises.
Merlin’s sense of self died gradually throughout the span of the whole series every time he lost a loved one and every time Gaius/Kilgharrah/Hunith asked him to forget himself and serve the crown. The kid who wanted to be seen and recognized for his talent, kindness and potential turned into a biggest self-sacrificing royalist who truly believed that his life was valued lesser than a king.
It’s a monarchist story. It’s a divine right of kings story. It’s a fascist story. It’s an anti-radicalism story, it’s a defender-of-the-status-quo story.
It is NOT a story of acceptance, of positive change, of equality, of democracy.
I thought we learned from Diogenes for fuck’s sake.

Arthur was trained to kill since birth, but Merlin was trained to lie.
Hunith must have drilled in little Merlin, with his golden heart and friendly personality, not to trust people. Not to tell them the truth.

imagine what the ealdor villagers must have thought of merlin. when he lived there they thought he was a bit odd, probably accident prone, on the outside, bit of a funny guy. he had exactly one friend. all of a sudden he leaves to go to fucking camelot of all places. why? stfu we don't need a why. they think nothing of it and forget about him.
IMAGINE THEIR REACTION WHEN HE RANDOMLY SHOWS UP WITH THE FUCKING PRINCE OF CAMELOT, THEIR ENEMY, FOLLOWING HIM LIKE A LOST PUPPY. I WOULD BE SHOCKED OUT OF MY FUCKING SKIN IF A LITTLE WEIRDO REAPPEARED HAVING BAGGED A PRINCE. NO WONDER WILL WAS SUSPICIOUS. WHY IS AN ENEMY PRINCE HERE. WHY IS HE HARDCORE FLIRTING WITH MY BESTIE. WHY IS HE SO WHIPPED.

AU where Morgause and Cenred kidnap Hunith instead of Elyan in S3, knowing Arthur will do anything for Merlin
They don’t understand why this small village woman seems so calm, even amused by the situation. Does she not realise what danger she is in? Her son?
But then Merlin “I love my mum” No-Last-Name A.K.A. The Most Powerful Sorcerer Ever to Walk the Earth single handedly breaks down the castle walls and takes down their guards instantly because how dare they take his mum
Honestly, that’s the magic reveal we needed

MERLIN | 4.12 The Sword in the Stone Pt. 1

I need a fic where Arthur knows magic isn’t inherently evil but doesn’t know about Merlin’s magic.
So he sees his new manservant being terrified of anything magical and tries to convince Merlin that magic can be good.
Meanwhile, Merlin thinks that Arthur knows about him so he’s trying to subtly convince Arthur that he should stop bringing it up.
Morgana just cackling in the background.
And it goes on until Ealdor when Arthur is like: “why the hell are you so anti magic if you have it?!”
And Merlin is so confused: “you didn’t know? But you kept trying to reassure me that you weren’t afraid of me.”
And Hunnith is watching all this unfold like: “ah yes, soulmates. Two sides of the same coin but if the coin is anything like their brain cells, it isn’t worth much.”

I think there should have been an episode of merlin where hunith got to go on a quest. like, this woman fell in love with a criminal on the run she was harboring in her house, was around for the most powerful sorcerer ever's terrible twos, and then sent said sorcerer right into camelot in a gamble so bold it had to work out. she could throw some hands i bet.

Arthur is used to the court, he is used to standing at a certain distance from his interlocutor, he is used to etiquette and protocols, to speaking in a certain tone of voice, to never lowering his eyes showing weakness and, as a result, he is used to servile people, to people who never respond to him in kind and to making do when something goes wrong and he would only need a hand on his shoulder because he would not dare ask for anything more.
Merlin is none of these things.
Merlin invades his personal space, responds to him in kind, hugs him when something goes wrong and reassures him with kind but firm words.
Arthur does not know why he expected Hunith to be something different, after all, Merlin must have taken after someone in the family.
Hunith, when Merlin decides to visit her and take Arthur with him because "you have to get to know my mother better!", bows on the first day and calls him sire.
On the second day, she already has him help in the kitchens and teaches him how to prepare a meal from scratch, not commenting on the fact that he doesn't even know how to mix a bit of flour and water and, indeed, resting a hand on his shoulder congratulating him when -Arthur knows- he has done the bare minimum.
On the third day, she hugs him.
Arthur holds her so tightly that he is sure he will hurt her, but he has never been hugged like this, not even by Merlin, and Arthur absolutely will not cry.
That night, lying on the bed on the floor with Merlin, Arthur hugs him and thanks him.
Merlin laughs and tells him he now expects a meal prepared from scratch from him.

Most people take "he likes you," to mean romantic interest.
Especially if the "he" in question is a prince who snuck away and followed you, to help you fight some bandits in your village in another kingdom. All because he couldn't bear the thought that you wouldn't be returning.
Bless him.

Merlin: And I don't want them dancing naked under the full moon!
Hunith: No, of course. The nudity is entirely optional. As you well remember!

Chaos is just the way for creation, It creates warmth and truly bonds in the aftermath of death worlds.
Hope is only born in the wake of destruction, That's why a Emrys is born in those chaotic situations.
Fire is the element of prophecy.
So it was not a surprise when her child first cry ended up lighting the whole house in a fire spree.

Gaius and Kilgharrah and Hunith and the prophets: "Merlin we know you are hurting and we know you're under a lot of stress and we know you had to let your own friends and loved ones die, believe us that is for The Best. Nevertheless you are basically Arthur's Life Support and you have to know that he will need help and the kingdom will fall if you aren't with him. You alone can do this, remember that. Oh he doesn't listen to you? That's okay! Just be there for him always all the time 24/7 because Arthur is the most important! He has the greatest potential! He can set you free Someday™. Think of the FUTURE, Merlin!!!"
Merlin when Arthur actually dies: "I have failed. I have given everything I had. He only barely found out my real identity. He doesn't even know my true name. I still lost my best friend."

I'm always a slut for Eldritch Nightmare Merlin, official cryptid of Camelot and infant demigod, and @fluffypotatey and I agree Hunith would be entirely chill with that, but I also propose Arthur is the only other person who sees nothing out of the ordinary about Merlin. Like, all the other OG Round Table knights are pretty worldly guys (except Leon, but that man has Seen Some Shit) so they've probably met enough other sorcerers or seen enough magic used to know Merlin's magic is a bit....out of the box. But Arthur has known Merlin the longest, has seen him at his best and worst, so his entire attitude towards the whole "greatest sorcerer ever to live" thing is just, "Okay, and??? Good for him???"
Things Arthur has seen Merlin do:
Create a rainstorm over a town that was suffering from drought
Conjure food out of nothing when their rations got ruined
Speak to elemental spirits
Summon lightning from a clear sky
Heal an entire forest destroyed by wildfire
Transformed a volley of arrows into a cloud of butterflies
Turn a would-be assassin into a mouse
Turn himself into various animals including a raven, a fox, a cat, a stag, a wolf, a serpent, and a stoat
Create a 30-foot wall of fire to cut off their enemy's escape route
Address the Seelie Court
Things Arthur has also seen Merlin do:
Trip on the same set of stairs at least once a week for 10 years
Get his cloak shut in a door because he forgot he was wearing it
Peel apples to give to his horse
Cry over a litter of fox kits they found on a hunting trip (they were very small and fuzzy)
Get giggling-drunk after one (1) cup of strong wine
Play hide-and-seek with small children
Help the younger pages and squires practice their letters
Attend a council meeting barefoot because he forgot to put his boots on that morning
Carry around that scaly wingéd demon dragon hatchling in a sling like an infant because "she missed him"
Merlin: *does some Literally Impossible feat of magic*
Arthur: Same bae, different day, what y'all fussing about?
