WIP Wednesday (2/8/23)

Yet another WIP! (Eek!) This excerpt comes from a fill for the Land of Myth server’s spy-themed dialogue melee prompt.

Merlin leaned over the sink, the singed sleeves of his dress shirt rolled up to his elbows as he scrubbed the blood and gunpowder from beneath his fingernails. The door to the washroom creaked open behind him, and he glanced up to see M’s stern eyebrow reflected back at him in the mirror over the row of sinks. Merlin dropped his gaze back to the hot water and stubborn grime.

M—Uncle Gaius—cleared his throat. “Care to tell me why you deposited the Crown Prince, unconscious, in one of my interrogation rooms?”

“Not particularly,” Merlin muttered, scrubbing harder. His skin itched with the unfamiliar sting of failure.

“I thought I’d made it clear we have a no abduction policy.”

Merlin glared at Gaius in the mirror. “He wasn’t cooperating. What did you expect me to do?”

Gaius folded his arms. “Not start an international incident, at the very least.”

Merlin snorted. “Please. That’s never bothered you before.”

Gaius harrumphed. “Those were different. Uther wasn’t demanding that I mobilize every single MI6 asset to find his son.”

“Look, he wasn’t giving me what I needed, and then we were attacked.”

“By—?”

“Sorcerers.” Merlin shrugged and rinsed the last of the soap from his scraped forearms, then splashed some water on his face. “Angry ones.”

“That is unhelpfully non-specific intel, 007.”

“I can’t be expected to know everything.”

The eyebrow rose higher. “You’re a spy. It is literally your job to know things.”

Merlin bit back a smart remark as he yanked a handful of paper towels from the dispenser, then exhaled slowly through his nose as he began drying his face and hands. “As I was saying, sorcerers: angry and not especially subtle. Didn’t identify themselves. The concussive force of one of their spells knocked him out, but not before he’d seen them break down the doors with fireballs.” He turned off the tap and tossed the used paper towels in the bin. “If the Prince didn’t already know magic existed, he does now.”

Thinking of a kinda gen Merlin scenario where Arthur finds out Merlin likes men and at first it's kinda uncomfortable with Merlin being like "I don't look at you like that or anything" and Arthur is awkwardly trying to process this but then after a moment he's like. Well why not. You got something to complain about???? Am I, a handsome prince and fierce warrior, not desirable enough for you???? And he's genuinely outraged for not fucking reason and Merlin is like God fucking dammit of course he would be insufferable about this too. So naturally he goes "well I've seen better" and Arthur is like "do tell" (disbelievingly and exasperatedly -because obviously his servant has rubbish taste, and quite frankly Merlin is in no position to have such high standards) and Merlin has this thing where his mouth moves faster than his brain whenever Arthur needs to be put in his place so he goes, immediately and without hesitation, "Gwaine, for one" and Gwaine, who is present along with the rest of the knights when this happens, looks oddly pleased at that and is literally preening for the rest of the week (Merlin lets him have this)

I haven't thought about how this would end but probably with Gwaine and Arthur fighting for Merlin's attention (yes even if Arthur is straight and not in love with him)(Gwaine would elope with Merlin in a second)

my art for @aroaceteagirl ‘s incredible fic!! this is my second @bbcmerlin-reversebang entry, and was so much fun to do!!

Summary:

When Arthur gets sent away by Uther to secure a treaty between Camelot and Tir-Mor, what should have been a normal diplomatic trip turns into more than Arthur could have expected.

Along the way, he learns valuable lessons about trust, friendship and the weight of duty.

Merlin prompt idea

So, everyone remembers this scene where Arthur catches Merlin bringing flowers to Morgana? And how later he tells Merlin that "king would have your head if he found out"?

JUST IMAGINE

Uther will actually find out

Morgana had one of her nightmares again and Merlin being a cute little cinnamon wants to support her and brings her flowers again but this time Uther sees him and immediately thinks that Merlin is trying to court his ward(daughter)

And he really goes mad and tries to spank/execute/punish Merlin

Arthur and Morgana don't want that, so they come up with a plan

Cause oBvIoUsLy it's Arthur and Morgana the ones who courting and Merlin simply delivered flowers from Arthur

Its sometime in 1-2s timeline, so they don't know that they siblings yet but Uther does

Chapter 11 - Lakes Edge

---- "You have a choice to make Merlin."

Merlin sighed. He'd been enjoying the quiet contentment of being together with his father in this place.

"I have to choose whether to go back or stay here, don't I?"

"Not right here," Balinor replied. "This is somewhere in between. But yes, you have to choose whether to go back," he nodded his head towards the forest behind them and the small dirt pathway leading into it. "Or whether to pass on." He raised a hand and gestured out to the lake. 

Merlin stared at his feet as he considered the choice placed before him. To return to Camelot, or pass through the gates of Avalon. 

Back in what he had assumed were the final moments of his life, he would have found the choice easy. He hadn't wanted to die, he'd wanted to cling on to life as tightly as he could.

But sitting here now, here in this beautiful, peaceful place, here with his father, a world brimming with magic and relief and so far away from the pain and loss and failure and constant, gnawing, endless fear... now that choice seemed far more difficult.

His mouth was dry. “Sorry about that.”

“And you killed my wyvern.”

Arthur winced. “That too.”

Arthur just wanted to find the Cup of Life and bring it to his father so that he could finally rest for more than two seconds.

Emrys, the God of Magic, puts a bit of a stop in those plans.

It's 14.2k words, and is an entirely enclosed story. No waiting on updates for this to know what happens next, you can read this one and that's it. That is a first for me.

man. i don't know, but to me it seems like some of y’all see everything merlin does as a reflection of his love for Arthur or another character? this is an issue for various pairings, but primarily merthur.

just, whenever merlin does something, those shippers act like it is an act of love for this particular character, everything is proof for merthur/the other pairing.

just take into consideration that merlin is a grown man with full autonomy, who has other interests besides romantic relationships, other people he cares for and maybe, you know, he does things just because they’re of benefit to HIM. to quote @sneakyboymerlin, merlin is his own person, not just an extension of arthur. (or another character on that note, because it’s not just merthurians that do this)

WIP Wednesday (4/19/23)

Arthur’s thoughts race even as his heartbeat falters. It is one thing to offer restitution, but to risk his life—and his kingdom’s stability—for the sake of a sorcerer? He barely knows this man beside him. The memories are all tangled; he doesn’t know how to separate the truth from the lies.

But between one skittering heartbeat and the next, he sees Merlin lying on the patients’ cot, poisoned and feverish. Another beat, and he sees the mace wound in Merlin’s shoulder and feels the panicked twisting in his own stomach that whispers, It’s over. There’s nothing you can do to save him. As time hesitates, stuttering and struggling to right itself, the images flash through his mind in rapid succession:

The determined set of Merlin’s jaw as Merlin picks up a sword to face a dragon beside Arthur.

The same determined expression as Merlin raises a chalice to salute Arthur with a trembling hand, then tips the poisoned liquid down his own throat.

The solemn, earnest light in Merlin’s eyes as he tells Arthur, “I’m happy to be your servant ’til the day I die.”

And Merlin had kept that promise.

“I’ll do it,” Arthur says.
