In the post, you said: "A lot of stories and backdrops are not appropriate for an intended audience or will need cultural translation. Many stories do this. Disney, for example, I believe does it quite well. They removed almost all of Hercules’ myth in the movie and made Hera and Zeus loving parents, The Little Mermaid film is very different from the original story though still quite good. I am not against adaptations, however, I do think we should acknowledge they are adaptations."
May I ask: what sort of "cultural translation" is understandable? i.e.: what makes you enjoy Disney's Hercules but not Percy Jackson series? Pardon me if this example is wacky, but my point being: what's the difference if they are both not that faithful to the source material?
I understand different media has its different limitations so sure, I can understand why Dinsey's Hercules is the way... Disney's Hercules is. But why "no" to Percy Jackson? What's the line here?
P.S.: To clarify, I am not a mega fan or mega defender of Percy Jackson, plz don't get me wrong. The reason I am sending this ask is bc your "What Disney song would represent Twilight main cast?" post. I am honestly glad that you mentioned three of Disney Hunchback's songs. Not just Hellfire, but three. Thank you Muffin for not shitting on Disney's Hunchback for... *cough* "not being faithful to the source material." Thank you.

Why I Don't Like Percy Jackson.
I guess I should get this out before the show is released and tumblr is overtaken by Percy.
To avoid getting into a whole rant about adaptations, when they work and when they don't, and why it's okay to be unfaithful to the source material or even the spirit of the source material even when Harry Potter fans are upset that not every little detail of the books made it into the films and how dare they cut this character who only had one line! I'll just say how I personally view it.
It boils down to "is the thing good". That's it, that's all I want out of my adaptations.
The Shining film was a slap in the face to The Shining novel, King infamously hates the film, mostly because Kubrick took basically just the setting, the character names, and the very basic plot and uh completely changed everything else. Still a great movie, one of my favorites.
Ghibli adaptations tend to have next to nothing in common with the source material they're based on, they still tend to be very good films.
The Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson films are fantastic, they do not take every detail from the book and even drop a few major plot points for runtime/plotline reasons (such as the enslavement of the Hobbits by Saruman).
For me an adaptation should be able to stand on its own and be enjoyable, even if it diverges from its source material. If you can do that I'm happy with you. If you can't, you bore me, or you make the source material worse/more boring.
Justifying your love for Hunchback's a different post, suffice to say for me, I find it a great film (admittedly with some issues) with a fantastically evil villain.

I’m just gonna say it, but I think current kids younger than 15 are almost incapable of dissecting anything with critical nuance. Because there is a HUGE difference to the 15 year olds BEFORE lockdown, and after. I’ve seen Gen Z teenagers on tiktok and tumblr have the most empathic, kind, amazingly supportive and intelligent opinions in 2020 who have now grown up and are in college absolutely killing it - they’ve gone into lockdown already having developed their emotional skills and come out of it with a lot more depth and growth. But YOU guys were 12 and younger when the pandemic started, you spent YEARS of it online without interacting with a wide variety of people and learning to read between the lines as you HAVE to in order to navigate the real world and peoples speech patterns and behaviours. You grew up alone in your house behind your screen, without being able to bond with classmates or friends, and most importantly, without anyone to temper your thoughts, or have rational and calm discussions in person. Half the teens I see on tiktok and tumblr NOW are so full of hate, so quick to put down and dismiss peoples choices, so quick to troll and voice really bizarrely conservative and ignorant opinions as if they’re entitled to do so, and so anti-empowerment and anti-ENJOYMENT in general. And I’m gonna be real with you and say it’s because of lockdown. It’s not entirely your fault bc y’all are still kids.
Your literature programs would have been cut, you’re just reading for the assignment, you’re not engaging in seminars and debates and classroom exercises the way you would in class, and all the while you’re just being increasingly exposed to sensationalist media that boils down complex and nuanced topics to a black and white, yes or no, 7 second hook. And it’s made you incapable of approaching anything with logic and empathy, because you just didn’t HAVE that the way everyone else did during their formative middle school puberty years. So now the moment you have a singular negative opinion of something, it’s all encompassing. There is no give, no flex, everyone is guilty until innocent. And why wouldn’t you think that? That’s what people have been doing online during the whole pandemic, cancelling people for 1 comment taken out of context, or being so quick to say something negative first instead of positive. You got comfortable behind your screen instead of being taught the consequences of saying shit things, and now when it comes to exploring all angles to a situation like you should be taught how to the way EVERYONE is, you take it at the most basic, surface, face value.
And when it now comes to fandom spaces where you have older fans in the same space as younger fans, there’s so many more instances where something will get an inordinate and undeserved amount of hate or hype based on a very surface level of understanding. Inherently, this isn’t a good or bad thing, it’s just a thing. What IS bad is when people come under someone’s obviously thought out and nuanced opinion to be like “you’re wrong for liking this bc (insert a completely unrelated logical fallacy of a reason)”. “If you like this book that happens to be a straight romance, you’re homophobic” IT DOESNT WORK THAT WAY AND IM SICK AND TIRED OF ARGUING WITH PEOPLE WHO NEVER BOTHERED TO DEVELOP READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS EVEN AFTER FINDING OUT THEY DON’T HAVE ANY.
Please for the love of GOD I am begging you guys to learn how to analyze literature. Like in an enforced curriculum at a high school level way. Please. YOU will be better off for it, and in turn the rest of us. This isn’t the new wave of boomer-esque hate against the kids. Gen Z is the goddamn future!!! This is a very specific, very VALID gripe, about a very small subset of kids who spent their formative years chronically online. And please! I am BEGGING teachers to recognize this and help their kids out to fix this. There is already a lot of hate in this world and we don’t need a new wave of people spewing hate under the guise of pseudointellectual liberalism because they don’t know how to see any deeper. This is one of the main reasons puritanism in the younger generation is exponentially on the rise! We’ve taken away the ability for them to form a fully informed opinion, and it’s now a self serving spiral. BREAK OUT OF IT, I AM PLEADING.

the mcc community has a huge issue with hate and hypocrisy so let me take a deep dive into what i mean by that and why these guys ^^^ are dumb cunts
example 1- buildmart .

that’s all i said . it’s a joking post about the fact a lot of people complain about buildmart . let’s talk about the response to that, which if needed i will tag blogs who participated in this behaviour .
• i was being whiny and needed to get over it bc buildmart if just a game
• i was clogging the mcc tag with negativity
• buildmart hate wasn’t allowed in the tags
this is the big one right
• i was asked to delete my post because the mcc tag is not a place for any sort of negativity, people don’t want to constantly see discourse in the tag which was from them on to remain discourse free
read that again . and a third time. as many times as you need for it to get through your skull .
let’s look at how the community reacted to that
- sent me death threats
-harassed me for 3 days after the post was made
- eventually made me take about a week away from tumblr bc i was tired of being harassed every time i made a post and there’s only so many times i can hit block anon
and that was justified right ???? that was okay ! because i made a little joke about not liking buildmart .

you all complained about the dream fans using th tags but i didn’t see anything from dteam fans in the tags . just you lot complaining about how awful they are .
let’s look at how this hate was handled
- nobody cared .
-hate clogged the tag
- the mcc tag was not discourse free
- and i am being harassed again for calling that out
so let’s get into why i’m calling it out .
i don’t care if you hate dream . hate him for whatever reason i do not give a shit. i’m not asking you to suck his dick. the issue is that you are purposefully straying away from the topic of conversation bc i like dream and you think it can all be boiled down to that . it can’t .
so what’s the issue if it’s not the fact that people hate dream? it’s that you’re awful people .

6am Woke up really well rested! Good!
Got sad when I saw I didn't have any messages overnight. CBT: This is your anxiety plugging emotions into nothing. Nothing has transpired, there's no real reason to feel anxiety, the anxiety is only coming from inside you.

Got to leave early enough to get a coffee bc maybe that will distract me. Drink for lunch too, I'm tired of gorging myself and wasting money on food. I'll keep it in mind, but I don't want another Disney scenario where I just go completely broke on one adventure, I'd rather do day trips, maybe an overnight if that even sounds like a good idea. I like sleeping in my own bed unless it's for a really good reason tbh. I want to focus on things around here that I don't typically have availability or mental capacity to do. I know I'll have fun regardless. Maybe even do the plasma thing some afternoons or mornings really to fund the adventures I'll have on my true off days. Just thoughts :)

For some reason I can't see my rubric so I started to panic and doubt myself, but now I know I'm not the only one who can't see their rubric, so I'm sure that part is a fluke/ irrelevant :) just breathe and enjoy the passing grades ❤️ if something is wrong, someone will let you know ❤️
12pm lunchtime! I'm getting curry chicken. Journaling is actually helping a lot and made me realize how intrusive and repetitive my thoughts are when I don't write them down. It's like I need a little vent port for these thoughts to fly out of my brain like steam out of a boiling pot of water. Crazy tbh lol.
1pm Ate lunch outside with some friends and it felt great!!
3pm lol I zoned out during the whole Verbal Defense (not mine!) But then he texted me good afternoon so I sent him a picture of my sweet tea, nothing crazy. I won't let him control my evening. I just wonder what is his motive lol. During class I was looking up free and cheap things to do and it's funny how a little googling can come up with a thousand things to do! So much fun to be had in the world :)
4pm he got me looking at my phone for a text back bitch guess what I'm taking a nap just like I planned lmao I'm not waiting around to talk to you wtf. Call me like I asked you to if you wanna talk, I hate this texting shit and he knows that. What am I a high schooler? Texting bs got you into this mess in the first place dumbass. I'm eating a cupcake and taking a nap.
6pm I have woke up from my nap. No messages lol I guess he just wanted to see if I was alive?? Don't know don't care. Nap was ok, cats kept waking me up or micro waking me up I think but that's ok too :) - There's really only one week left of this bullshit I am so proud of myself ❤️ I actually love the idea of NOT burning myself out the last week so that when I leave school I don't necessarily NEED to do that hibernating thing where I feel like shit for 4-5 days afterwards. I'd like to exit my verbal defense maybe take a nap just like I did today to refresh and then shit take myself out for a nice dinner and get dressed up. Instead of getting drunk and passing out, I can do that most other nights after a closing shift 🤣 I want to start my vacay right away with no need to "recover" in such a drastic manner. Let's see if we can make that happen :) I think that also includes NOT avoiding fun things the next week, bc I always avoid fun stuff when I'm stressed as if I'm going to jinx myself, but I think I'm ready to break that curse of "all work and no play." We shall see ;)

I feel like a lot of people on the internet start hate posting about how cringy certain media is solely because it’s popular and they weren’t able to get into it. And I just wanna say it’s ok to not like something! It’s ok if something just isn’t your cup of tea. But to turn around and go “oh I don’t like it, so that must mean it objectively sucks and the reasons other people like it are wrong and bad” is so weird.

I mean, I don’t really know how this applies to the fandom now, but it’s definitely anime fans and most yoichi fans. I just, I wanted to watch a yoichi amv because I was working on Yoichi stuff but like. I could not find a SINGLE one that was even voiced by a guy?
Now, in general, that’s not an issue, just because he’s a guy obviously doesn’t mean that he can’t have a girl song because that would be dumb to say so. But that’s just not something I see for anyone else. When I see Mika or Guren or Yu centric amvs and stuff, there’s plenty of edgy boi songs and shit. Sometimes Mika gets sexy bitch songs as a joke, but when they’re actually trying to be about that character, they’re all songs sung by dudes.

Yes we’ve established that Yoichi isn’t a smol baby bean boi so fucking stop, a lot of people just kinda ignore that but even without the manga, even without taking into consideration a single thing he said in chapter 51 onwards, the way that the fandom likes to see him is just... not right.

1. fangirls who see yoichi, think “gay”, and think they know his entire character because of a stereotype, honestly this was probably something to do with kagami, I feel like I’ve heard around for a long time Yu was supposed to have a fucking harem like guren and they just basically never developed yoichi beyond ‘clearly is gay for yu as a plot point for like three episodes before forgetting about him after school arc’
2. The fans basically just thinking that he just ✨ tried harder ✨ not to have trauma and now he’s fucking fine, I was glad to see that wasn’t the case but people don’t understand how or why it happened, I’ll gladly explain
3. People forget so easily how terrible he had it. It’s not just “gay boy fucking mans up” it’s “gay boy is consistently told for eight years that he’s completely useless if he can’t kill things and every trait he has is terrible because it’s weak and associated with gayness so he internalizes that to an unhealthy degree”
I mean, I’ll try to explain how I see his character, but yeah.
Back to my “I don’t understand how people were suprised when Yoichi admitted he would have killed himself if Yu hadn’t showed up” point... do you remember what he was like back in school arc?
He was not ok. Bro, that guy was so soft and scared. He didn’t want to hurt or offend anyone. He didn’t want to get into any conflict and his first instinct was to submit to abuse or run away. He was desperate for validation and friendship, and he fell for things like bullying easily because he wouldn’t fight back and he wanted someone to like him so bad. He didn’t really want to be in the army, he was glad he got saved even if his sister didn’t make it, he didn’t truly want revenge. Obviously he wasn’t over it, but he didn’t think “boy howdy do I want to kill a vampire”.
The only reason that he got so stuck on that was because it’s been pounded into his head from moment one. He got called every manner of weak, weakling, wuss, crybaby you can think of by not just shitty high schoolers but by authority figures. They live in a militarized society where your worth is determined by your physical and mental strength, so people with disabilities, mental illnesses, shit like that- they’re not doing so hot. Their way of dealing with Kids Have Trauma is “get over it” or “seek revenge against the vampires who did it”. This is actually a thing Kureto stated very clearly at the beginning of resurrection when he gave his dumbass speech to a bunch of traumatized 11 year olds right after the catastrophe. He’s weaponizing a bunch of kids by putting all these ideas into their head- giving them all fucking hero and martyr complexes because it makes them better soldiers. He tells them that they should want to get revenge and they should be strong and suck it up and use strong emotions against them.
So Yoichi basically grew up conditioned to absolutely fucking hate himself because that’s the ideal. He isn’t like that, and so he sees Yu who is basically the shining example of that kind of thinking, at that point in time. Basically just toxic masculinity central. He’s aggressive and strong, is much quicker to pull a sword on someone than hold out a hand, doesn’t want to make friends, he’s serious and dead set on revenge, he doesn’t cry in front of people and he uses his trauma as a weapon. Yu’s actually a total dick at the beginning of the story, to be honest, and I was surpised to find out the shit he said straight to Yoichi’s face. “give up” “weaklings like you would only get in the way” “nice guys like you shouldn’t be here” “we’re not here to make friends” basically telling him to suck it up or leave, bro, the dude was a fucking jackass to Yoichi, and Yoichi internalizes everything these people say to him, he believes every terrible thing people say.
And Yoichi still completely idolizes him because that’s everything Yoichi isn’t, as this obviously queer coded side character, and everything Yoichi is told he’s supposed to be. *clears throat* toxic masculinity
So in the beginning of the story Yoichi aspires to people like Yu and Kimizuki who are very,,, not open with their emotions. Gee whiz I wonder why he’s keeping up this facade to all his friends instead of trying to sit down and talk about how fucked up he is now. But let’s now talk about how Yoichi got to be the way he is now.
People, again, seem to think that when he got a demon he just decided to stop being traumatized or something, that he just finally got the strength to deal with that and it wasn’t a problem again because he gained confidence. But uh... remember what actually snapped him out of being possessed? You’d immediately go to Yu, but when Yu said all those idealistic things about friendship, Yoichi was still pointing his weapon at Yu. What actually stopped him?
Right after that, it was Guren telling him that becoming a demon was the equivalent to running away and hiding. (which, well, guren, I have a few things to say about that but)
He didn’t stop having those internalized ideals, the things he’d been told over years didn’t just go away or suddenly work at “fixing” him. He was just accused another time of being weak. He didn’t get over or resolve his trauma in any way, he just found a different way to deal with it, with a demon. The reason this actually works for him is that if you’ve literally ever looked closely at the times Yoichi interacts with demon stuff, he’s very innately talented at it, which is odd. He was completely immune to Guren’s test, he came back from being possessed out of sheer force of will, he learned manifestation by himself, he talks to his demon like he’s the one that Gekkouin should be scared of. He finally found something he was good at, that made him strong, and boy, he really clung to that one. He found a way to make himself the ideal they all wanted: in control, powerful, an asset to the team, stuck on revenge and without hesitation to kill- even if it’s not really something he should aspire to be. He just hides the fact that it’s a problem even more because it’s not something he’s supposed to talk about. because. toxic masculinity-
And so if you realize that, it’s not very surprising to see that reveal coming the whole time.
Simply put, if you liked yoichi, y’all should have realized he was never ok. Boy’s got issues. He’s a really complex character that, well, kagami kind of fails to do justice, but the fandom just kind of warps into smol uwu bean boi I could go on but my brain isn’t working so take this

Every time someone comes to me saying "how can you stan mamamoo" it rears its ugly head. I watched this video a while back and the person made a good point that a lot of people who call out groups on their racism don't actually care about people of colour. They often fail to call out male artists and are quicker to leave the past in the past with bgs. A lot of it boils down to hating other women and trying to appear woke without doing research

However I want to just highlight how important this is!!!!! I absolutely agree. It’s sickening how people are so quick to turn against female idols/groups for something they did wrong, especially when their male counterparts can get away with so much more. It reminds me of cancel culture in the way that people take the statement of what happened at face value and don’t further investigate the situation or give an opportunity for the groups to understand what was wrong or to form a (sincere) apology.
I think one very important recent situation this reminds me of happened with a member of JYJ (apologies for forgetting which member specifically but you can find a handful of articles if you search April fools and coronavirus and Kpop). But on April fools he posted that he had coronavirus, when in fact he did not. He terrified his fans and concerned even his family. Eventually he explained it was an April fools prank to raise awareness for the seriousness of the situation of covid-19. It was highly inappropriate to do such a thing when the entire globe in undergoing the current pandemic and so many are actually being impacted by it. The worst part is that the company said he did nothing wrong because it’s April fools and he won’t have repercussions for it. But you know if it came from a girl group, I can almost guarantee you that it would’ve blown up.

i hugely disagree abt yoi, but TONS of people actually did bitch about it being queerbait, and continued bitching about it for nearly a year after it ended. it was honestly kind of a pain to be in the fandom bc there was so much discourse about it being bad rep?
I mean it’s just my take on it, not everyone is gonna like everything, and just cuz I didn’t feel like the rep was there doesn’t mean it’s queerbaiting. From the parts that did feel romantic I did get the sense that they cared deeply about each other and that the author was writing a love story, I just didn’t really feel like it was enough for me, and imo the story was a bit allover the place and left me really confused.
I do think that you can just not like things without having to label them as evil or bad in some way. I didn’t like YoI, but I’m not gonna call it queerbaiting or say it was evil or that the author was a homophobe(all things that people are saying about Gaiman rn despite the fact that he said it was a love story) I can just accept that I didn’t like it, and I didn’t feel like it was the kind of love story I wanted to watch or was lead to believe it was, and call it that.
I still do feel like it’s an accurate comparison however, since both YoI and GO were a big vauge about the love stuff and left a lot of it up to interpretation. They can be good love stories without having to be in your face about it. I just feel like I really didn’t like the writing in YoI, and I just wanted to point out how one vauge queer love story was treated differently than another vauge queer love story when they both had a lot in common. I know people did bitch about the queerbaiting, and I do have to admit I was one of them, mostly cuz I was confused that everyone kept saying it was an amazing example of gay rep and I just...never understood why? I felt super underwhelmed and I still do, but I have learned not to throw the label queerbait around just because I didn’t like a story, and I saw a LOT more people saying it was amazing gay rep and the only complaints I remember were just people mad about who was shipping and HCing what.
I really do think it boils down to tumblr fans wanting everything to be gay and hating that an author decided that ANY HC was vaild. It’s happened before with Voltron and Homestuck if I remember correctly. I think the reason that YoI got a clear pass from most of the fans was that for better or worse it was a gay love story and the author never said anything like “It can be whatever you want!” cuz these fans just really don’t like anyone interpreting their gay rep as bi rep or whatever. That’s part of the example too, Good Omens is getting hate for no reason, while YoI got a pass all based on what the author said or didn’t say.
But yeah, I def agree that the fandom was a bit insufferable. Most fandoms are. I’m in the Ducktales fandom rn and god you would be surprised, or even worse wouldn’t be surprised, about the way people are treated over shit that really doesn’t matter and acting like anyone who doesn’t think the main gay ship is canon is somehow a homophobe. For some reason in that fandom tho it doesn’t even matter what the authors say cuz the fans are so blinded that they act like ti’s canon when it’s not and even word of god won’t stop them.
Plus there was that huge debacle over people who headcanoned Reigen from MP100 as aroace because apparently he’s “gay coded” and if you see him as anything but you are a bigot. I mean people legit were being so open about their aphobia it made me sick.
And YoI was no better. I still see people attacking people who ship small Yuri with that Otabek guy despite the fact that it’s only a 3 year age gap, and my friend got PISSED at me for getting defensive about headcanoning big Yuri as bi/ace. Like sorry not sorry, some people are gonna like stuff that you disagree with and you are just gonna have to deal with it!
With every fandom I’m in it just becomes more and more clear that tumblr is an insanely unhealthy place and no matter what you do you will be seen as the enemy. No one understands how to just live and let live and shipping the wrong thing or disagreeing with a popular HC is just as bad as killing someone in these people’s eyes. And overall the people most hurt by it are all of us lgbtqiap2+ people who just want to be able to HC our fave characters to be like us.

Wld ppl speak out? Thinking of all the things that ppl never speak up over but pretend to be allies? This performative allyship? It makes me sick. THIS is the toxic side of Tumblr. It really is an issue of performative allyship vs actual allyship. Lots of people with “No TERFs” on their blog headers, folks asserting up and down that trans women are women and are “obviously” included in women’s spaces.
But then they fill those spaces with cissexism and transmisogyny and trans fetishization, and all sort of attitudes and behaviours and words that make it clear to us that we’re not truly accepted and seen as women, that we’re only welcome on their terms and that our voices don’t mean anything. So who are they supportive of? Who are they welcoming of within the spaces/communities we’re supposed to be able to safely exist in? It becomes intensely conditional. We’re accepted and welcomed so long as they get to demean us, misrepresent us, expose us to (and sometimes encourage) harm and sexual violence and social hostility, see and treat us like cis men in dresses they can put on a pedestal every once in a while for ally points.
If trans women are only conditionally accepted in women’s spaces, then our womanhood is being treated as conditional. It’s that simple. And it’s really clear that’s the case among those reading and writing those trans fetishistic works.
As for your example, I don’t need to use anyone else as a barometer for what’s acceptable in fandom, or how folks would react. Racial fetishization is distinct from trans fetishization.
But I do have a strong feeling that if Amber Riley had been thinner, if she’d fit the fetishized “thick girl” figure…I guarantee that we would have seen that sort of thing blow up in the Glee fandom. She was already treated as shrill, loud, and brainless/small-minded (misogynoir at play). Being fat disqualified her from being treated as a viable character for most sexual works (classic fatphobia), but yeah…if she’d been a “thick” girl with large breasts, yeah, absolutely people would have treated her character as a mindless sex receptacle. I’m not even sure anyone would be so kind as to tag their works with anything specific, outside of maybe the shudder-inducing “eb*ny”, since that seems to be the norm of how black women are treated in sexual media.
I doubt much of anyone aside from black women would speak out, or do anything about it. Hell, you’d probably get a bunch of folks who’d think it was positive rep. You’d get her paired up with all the white male leads in pursuit of pregnancy fics with mixed baby fetishization. And you’d get a slew of g!p fics in femslash portions of the fandom, with her as the ‘voluptuous’, ‘primal’, ‘aggressive’ partner with the BBC to ravage and fill up all the nubile, innocent white female leads. The fandom mostly shoehorned in Santana to fit that role, as the predatory mindless sex pot, but I don’t doubt that they’d have jumped on the possibility of using Mercedes if they’d seen her as viable. And fandom would have done nothing about it, because they didn’t do anything about it with Santana, dismissing criticisms left and right, and even trying to use canon material to justify twisting her character that way. Latinx fans were vocal as hell, and were roundly ignored and dismissed.
So yeah, in your given example, that’s exactly what would happen. Had racial fetishization been done in canon material, fandom would have maybe rallied a bit against that harmful rep (they did a few times in Glee to events.portrayals in canon, certainly), but when the finger’s pointed at them? Nope. Fandom, by and large, would not give even half of a shit. But they would be vocal here and there about being against racism, of how there needs to be more support for woc, especially in wlw fandom. Calling out #BlackLivesMatter while gleefully fetishizing black women is something I absolutely suspect would be common.
There’s a lot of issues in fandom. Trans fetishization is just one issue among a great many others. It’s the one I focus on, because it affects me directly, and I can speak on it and educate on it, but there’s absolutely racial fetishization in fandom. It’s rampant. And fandom spaces for LGBT+ fandom really do tend to mirror real life spaces. They’re white-centric and cis-centric for sure, to name a few pertinent issues.
And they don’t think they’re transmisogynistic. They don’t think they’re racist. Many of them can’t even get a sniff that there’s anything wrong with the works they love that fetishize and dehumanize real marginalized groups of people. Except for those of us being dehumanized and fetishized and excluded, we don’t have the luxury of dipping into fandom all peacefully and comfortably. We don’t have the ability to just ignore the harm being done to us and move on, nor should we have to.
Like, in real life, when folks see transphobia, or racism, and they do nothing? That can at times be understandable, if unfortunate. But online? There’s zero real risk/danger. There’s always, always ways to help. But people still shy away. When there’s practically an epidemic of people not commenting on fanworks, who’s going to put in the effort to fight these fights that isn’t already directly affected? Hardly anyone.
And I’ll admit there are times I could have done better, done more. I need to do better, there’s always room for improvement.
I just need to hope there’s enough out there trying to make things better for some sort of positive change to happen. It’s just hard sometimes, as you know.

PittCon Saturday
(holy shit y’all this was so much to remember from this morning until now. sorry if I forgot anything) Also this is obnoxiously long so this one gets a cut. #You’reWelcome

Part One:
No Rob Benedict. Rich makes promises of him later.
ROB BENEDICT!!! He walked out with Briana and she claims she planned the whole thing.
Briana, Kim, and Gil didn’t have anyone lined up for questions. Briana threatened period talk. Gil blushed.
Questions for Briana today instead of Kim. Briana does a little victory thing every time someone says, “My question is for Bri.” Kim mocks her from yesterday and says, “I’m gonna answer it anyway.”
Gil is third-wheelin’ it, hard.
Gil addresses the whole thing that happened with the butt grabbing. He wanted to “nip it in the bud because it was weighing very heavily” on him. Apparently I missed that last night because I had no idea what he was even talking about when he said it. He’s a great guy. Try not to fault him for one little slip, yeah? He’s human. Cut the man some slack.
Part Two:
Rob scolds Rich for not telling us about the “I <3 KoC” shirts. Debates about whether it’s pronounced like Coke or like cock. “Wear that to Grandma’s house.” “One of those things will kill you!”
Matt, Rob, and Rich bounce off of one another unbelievably well.
Pssst, Matt Cohen is fucking attracccttiivveeeee
Questions about other projects and hobbies come up. Matt says he wants to get into racing again. Racing is in his future. Richard says he’s a lot like his father. His father was a lawyer. Rob used to have his own baseball league. With himself. He made up teams like “The Colors” and “Other Things.”
Rob and Rich are besties and it makes my life.
The pilot for Skyward is streaming now on Amazon. Rich said there’s a part already sketched out for Rob if the show continues. It wasn’t his idea to include Rob, but he wanted to eventually anyway.
Part Three:
Mark Sheppard is either consistently grouchy or was very tired/cranky today.
Almost all of his answers boiled down to one word, so that was the one word he used, and then moved on. He probably answered more questions on his own than Misha and Jake did combines just because of how fast he was moving.
He said fuck Creation’s rules and walked around the crowd most of the time. Also joked about how when he was more powerful (and important), they never would’ve allowed that. (sad face on my part)
A fan asks how he feels about Fergus’s deal and how he lost his soul, what he sold it for. He doesn’t laugh. Just says, “If you want to ask about my penis, there are other ways to do it. I can’t relate to Fergus, if that’s what you’re asking.”
His favorite line is “Where’s your moose?”
“You’re good, but I’m Crowley,” was improv.
Talking about his wife and daughter made him light up like a Christmas tree. It was adorable.
Everyone thinks he hates cats. He got very snarky about it. “Did I say I hate cats? No. I don’t hate anything. I hate Misha. Oops.”
He thinks Crowley came full circle. There wasn’t much else for him to do in the series, he thinks.
He doesn’t understand the logic behind Rowena being Crowley’s mother.When Rowena dies at the hands of Lucifer (the first time), Mark said the line, “Always thought I’d be the one to do it,” felt very right in that moment.
Part Four:
Jake Abel has the bubbliest butt in the entire cast. To quote myself from earlier today, “You could bounce a fuckin nickel off of that thing.”
He’s been creating plotlines and ways to bring Adam back. New plans are made every time he comes to a convention. Currently, we’re looking at an Adam spinoff in which he and his mother are resurrected (him from Hell, her from Heaven) and become hunters. They have “opposing forces!” as Jake said, and the story would follow the way they got the opposing forces to work together for the same common purpose.
This man is insane.
He kept reminding us that he was in a weird mood because his flight didn’t get in until 4am.
Sleepy Jake is the cutest.
Talk of Percy Jackson.
Lots of talk about bringing Adam back.
Part Five:
MISHA. FREAKIN. COLLINS.
Guys. I’ve never been more amazed by one person’s smile and overall attitude. He’s so cheery and bright and uugghhh Misha.
He tells a story about his dad, and then says that he had to tell his children about his parents’ (brief, I think?) split, but he doesn’t want it to sound like that’s the only way marriages can end. The next day, his son went to school and told the teacher, “I want my parents to get a divorce.” I literally have no idea if this is true, but it’s what Misha told us.
Fake spoilers for Season 13, but he told us that he was filming it last night. Jared and Jensen still fuck with him to no end.
“We were filming. Jared was on the bed, and we were doing something we don’t usually do on Supernatural.” *cue roars from the audience*
I think he tried to fight someone in the crowd. I have photos of his bulgy eyes and sassy jawline. Yeah, it’s a thing.

I was going to show him the photo of himself standing in front of the whiteboard with his drawing of Maison and the dandelion. Creation doesn’t allow phones in the photo op rooms so I had to put it in my pocket, which was fine.
I walked up and asked the woman if I could show him something. She said, “Sure, just make it quick!” Again, I get it. Not a problem.
I’m standing there waiting with my arm pulled out of my sleeve to show him my tattoo. I walk up and I’m greeted with the most amazing smile and such a soft “hi.”
I blurt out, “I NEED TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING!” *shoves my arm towards him* *silence from Misha as he stares*
His mouth kind of popped open when he realized what it was. His eyes are so freakin’ blue and I know because he looked me directly in them and told me, “That’s amazing.”
My heart is racing, but I lean and and we hug and Chris snaps the photo. I step to walk away and Misha grabs my hands (!!!!!!!!!) I turn and look up at him (because damn he’s tall! He’s right, he’s just surrounded by giants.) and he squeezes my hands. “That’s amazing.” It’s so quiet and I blink for a second. “Thank you.” I get another tight hand squeeze and thank him before running into the hallway and crying. (*inhale* I’m okay, really.)
HUGE HUGE HUGE FUCKIN’ THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED MONEY TO GET ME THAT OP. I LOVE YOU ALL AND IF/WHEN I MEET YOU GUYS, HUGS ALL AROUND.
On to the auto. I showed him the tattoo again, quickly spat out, ”I know I showed it to you at the photo ops but...!” and he drew a heart next to his name when he signed it. I got another “That’s amazing. Thank you so much.” and that friggin smile
I still don’t know if he knows the tattoo is his handwriting. I assume he could tell when he looked at it, especially for how long he looked at it. But *shrugs* maybe one day I’ll tell him.
While waiting for Misha’s op, I MET @HIGHONPASTRIES (whose tumblr is literally not working this weekend, just FYI)!!! There’s a selfie to prove it. Will be posted later.
Part Six:
SNS
Jake introduces the band. First starts by demanding that we chant, “Bring Adam back,” over and over again. Chant quickly turns into, “Lou-den Swain.”
I didn’t know I needed a fuckin’ KAZOO. *cough cough* @torn-and-frayed @nichelle-my-belle-spn-con-blog (still waiting for the kazoo tip to make an appearance)
Rob Benedict sang half a song without a microphone. Don’t know why. It just wasn’t working.
MATT COHEN WINKED AS HE RAN PAST ME Y’ALL. Camera was too slow to capture it but if anyone has that wink, good God send it this way, please.
Sam Smith popped out! Just to introduce Kim though - no singing.

Rob cried singing She Waits. Then said he loves us so much it’s unreal. This man is pure and good and needs to be protected at all costs.
They played my faaave song. It’s called Amazing.
Kazoo song. Also known as Medicated. Someone had an amplifier for their kazoo. Rob was very impressed. Cast members are getting better at the kazoo solo. Rob isn’t happy about it. “This isn’t as fun when you guys are gooood.”

this started as a response to a different post, but it kind of spiralled out into something much bigger than what that post was about so... here have one last essay in which i talk about delphine criticism in relation to the creators and fandom. (mobile users: i’m sorry if the whole thing shows up on your dash or if none of it does...
[ ] are for context to the original response but i was too lazy to reformat.
i keep seeing delphine-specific criticism. which for the most part i agree with bc it is super gross how cophine have literally never addressed any of their problems. that delphine has continually done things against cosima’s will with seemingly no consequences. that is, what the youth would call, Problematic™. but i don’t think going into her tag and listing off all the shitty things she’s done and picking it apart and saying delphine is A Bad Person is doing anything. (i’m guilty of this as well as defending her).
under certain circumstances the things she’s done could have been options that were the lesser of two evils. for instance, [the original post] brought up the photos [in season 3]. isn’t it less intrusive to have a private detective follow from a distance than sending in a new monitor who would likely take a romantic angle to getting to cosima’s information? like neither is good, but delphine was technically in charge of the monitor program and had probably everybody at dyad threatening her into taking some kind of action. rock and a hard place.
and as someone who likes delphine and deeply enjoys for her to have a tragic backstory, that’s how i interpret it. and it’s pretty clear that that’s what the creators wanted people to interpret. it’s pretty much the fanon interpretation at this point, although i’ve never really seen it put into words. why else would they show her self-medicating with alcohol in that scene where she’s looking at the photos? why else would they continue to validate her in interviews? if she were supposed to be evil, they wouldn’t keep making cosima go back to her. (ideally.)
and from interviews, it seems evelyne is deeply feminist. like she’s got her thumb on the pulse of the underlying, powerful aspects of her character. there’s a post in my queue right now that fuels everything i’ve ever thought about delphine. and as she isn’t a writer or showrunner this level of understanding is being guided from somewhere or something that she is hearing or seeing that we don’t.
so at what point do we stop criticizing delphine, the character’s actions, and start on the writers and their portrayal of her?
[the original post, in part, was calling out delphine’s behavior in season 3.]
i think i got some clarity after season 5 ep 5. bc the delphine of season 2 was just trying to figure out where she fit in everything, how to be the best she could be in her particular position. how to make cosima happy from there. an ultimatum stating that cosima has to accept something that makes her unhappy or leave is not something that that delphine would say. her whole thing is trying to be the best she can for cosima.
i think everything she’s said this season is super clunky. it’s some huge complex idea that the writers didn’t want to spend the screen time on so they boiled it down to a single line. and the big complex ideas aren’t problematic in and of themselves it’s the way they end up being worded. and there’s in-canon headcanons that can explain that but in reality it is 100% on the writers. they just didn’t want to put in the time to make those lines stronger.

and i think a lot of this fandom is capable of critical thinking. like in the context of the show a lot of what delphine did in season 3 could be interpreted as romantic adjacent. but only in the context of the show. like i’m fairly certain nobody in real life is going to go to their ex’s current girlfriend’s house to find out information on the global conspiracy they’re involved in. or that they find it anywhere near romantic. (something delphine wouldn’t have done if she hadn’t been informed by cosima that she was the mole. anyway..) but the romantic interpretation is that delphine really didn’t want to do that, at all. but cosima said she was in danger and this is what she needed to do to protect her. like, when i put on pants to go to the grocery store to get ice cream for my girlfriend. it’s not something i wanted to do, but she asked me so i did it because i love her. just to the Extreme.
so like people enjoying something that’s Problematic™ doesn’t necessarily mean that they condone those actions. fandom is a place of exploring things in fiction. like i’m pretty darn sure people who like rachel’s narrative aren’t going to carve out their own eye anytime soon. i would rather fictional characters do these things than real life people, tbh.
like totally call out people spreading hate and being mean to real, live people. that’s never okay in any context. and hoping a character turns out evil... like there’s definitely a line. like tagging character hate into the main tag? that’s too much, that’s a good way to get people mad (i see you, shay haters. i see you every time). but not liking a character and hoping they end up leaving? we all did it with ferdinand. although he was evil the entire time, so :/ bad example. but like, there are popular characters and storylines that i haven’t enjoyed At All on this show. does that make me Problematic™ because they’re women? am i a sexist because something about a woman didn’t entertain me?
basically what i’m saying is criticizing fans for enjoying something that’s only Problematic™ under certain lights isn’t the answer. just because your interpretation says it’s Bad doesn’t mean people seeing it as good are wrong. and vice versa. just because your interpretation is popular and/or validated (loosely) by actresses, writers, or showrunners doesn’t mean Everybody Has To Like This Thing Now. if you don’t like someone’s opinions, the unfollow button exists to make your dash look like you want it to. download xkit or tumblr savior and put their url or tags into it. and if they’re harassing you, just block them. that is not someone you can persuade or convince.
the creators and writers are the real problem. they didn’t make it clear in canon that what delphine was doing was wrong. they didn’t make it clear that she owes cosima a profuse apology. they didn’t make it clear that she should have or has faced consequences for some of the things she’s done. which i think is a great disservice to the character, her fans, and her critics.

so my tea has to be super strong, absolutely NO SUGAR (criminal), with the tiniest bit of milk in it (it should be dark brown) and we have an old irish joke about being able to stand the spoon up in the tea it’s that strong, and yeah, that’s pretty much it
i really like american coffee, when i went over there at easter time i couldn’t get enough of it. also strong. no sugar, and a tiny bit of milk. pretty much the same as my tea. when i buy coffee, though, my order is a skinny flat white
(also funny story about tea and coffee, we went to boston while on our usa trip and we went to the boston tea party museum, you know where you go out onto the ships and they make you throw the fake tea overboard? yeah well me and my sister thought it would be hilarious to yell things like “we hate the brits” and “down with england” really loudly in our surrey-RP-hilairously-british accents. yeah we got some weird looks)

did u not read i told u my dad is always right and he says it’s okay so i’m 110% in the right bc my dad said so thank u for your time
also most of the things i say about Louis publicly are over exaggerations of what I really think because I know Louies who stalk my blog constantly to send me anon hate or vague post about me and it makes me laugh that these people care so much about my opinion. In reality, I think that Louis is a mildly annoying celebrity who I don’t really spend much time thinking about when I’m not on this hellsite.
but i’m also an extremely vocal person who has a lot of opinions and believe in fandom spaces such as tumblr there’s nothing wrong with speculation as long as that speculation doesn’t turn into harassment. and that was the Problem.
if louies weren’t the way they were i’m sure my relationship to louis would be a lot like it is with harry: sometimes i think he can be over the top annoying and i get super confused by some of the choices he makes, but when it comes down to it i’m a fan and support him even though i make my opinion known when i disagree with him or his team.
louies don’t allow that and post things like “you can’t ever criticize louis because he has to deal with too much already” and that’s just not how celebrities work. they’re public figures and you SHOULD constantly be willing to call out your fave celeb if they do something that makes u uncomfortable and you should be allowed to post opinions without getting anonymous death threats.
that’s why i am the way i am and what this all boils down to, in the end. do i go about it the wrong way? you could make an argument for that and i’d probably agree with some of your points. but it started as me being genuinely pissed at the reaction of louies to ashley’s tweet she liked and it just stuck because people are still watching everything i say to try and start things.
that’s why i make it a point to never tag louis or use his full name. this isn’t about wanting louis himself to be upset by what i post, or even really to get my posts seen by new people. although i would say some of my opinions to his face if it came down to it. but it’s amusing to me (and a lot of my friends) to overreact about louis and watch everyone melt down because people watch my blog.
and you definitely do not have to like me for that. you can think i’m an asshole and that’s 110% fine. i’m not asking people to like me on here. i’m not going to beg you to stick around and handle me if you don’t want to. but it just blows my mind that anytime i make a post about louis i still get tons of anons and people vagueing about me because they still care about my opinion bc they couldn’t force me to conform to what they thought was the best way to handle opinions.
so i guess that’s my essay.
