1. Hi! I was reading a Twitter threadfic, but I lost it and I can't find it anymore (either that, or the author deleted it).
WWX is a spy (or something like that) and finds himself at LWJ's house (he's his ex husband and a surgeon) because he got himself hurt in his line of work. LXC works at the hospital with LWJ and is married to NMJ, who does the same job as WWX (the difference is that what WWX does is illegal). Also, at one point LWJ decides to adopt A-Yuan because he wasn't taken care of by his foster parents.
It was quite long, very new and it was updated frequently @blueghost13
FOUND? This Twitter fic / empty space beside me by scarletmoontears (E, 9k, WIP, WangXian, NieLanYu, Spies & Secret Agents, Secret Agent WWX, Surgeon LWJ, Mutual Pining, Exes, Reconciliation, Getting Back Together, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort, Slow Burn) this is for the first one. I believe the author also has an ongoing fic for it as well. If requester needs it I'll send it. / the thread fic is still ongoing, so updates on ao3 are a little slower than on twitter!

2. Hi! Thank you for all your work :) I’m looking for a fic where in the past JYL drowned bc she got caught in a net of some sort and WWX and JC tried to save her, and JC blamed her death on WWX. In the future something similar happens and JC realises it wasn’t really WWX’s fault and they sort of reconcile I think?

3. Hioooo I'm looking for a fic in which Lan Zhan stays in the Mounds if I remember correctly and the townspeople know him as the deity of the mountain or something like that, I remember that Xicheng listens to the rumors and goes to Yiling with the elders of the Lan clan and they want to punish Lan Zhan, I also remember that Lan Zhan wears hair accessories and the children braided his hair. Please help me find it.

7. hello! i hope you are all having a good day! for the fic finder, i'm looking for a fic that i believe takes place in the cloud recesses study era, in an AU where arranged marriages are expected to happen at a certain age, and for some reason or another, wwx offers lwj for them to start "practicing" so they don't embarrass themselves when they're actually assigned their spouses. does it ring a bell to anyone?? @layzeal

8. Hello! I’m so desperate and can’t find this fix anywhere - can you please help? It’s modern as where Wangxian is married, but they have initial misunderstandings where WWX doesn’t think they’re in love. WWX doesn’t enjoy sex initially and can’t orgasm. LZ is allergic to chocolate. LZ is some kind of rich CEO. And there is a coffee truck guy who has a huge crush on WWX. Any guidance is much appreciated!! Thank you!

9. I've been looking for this JWY & WWX reconciliation fic for so long. Wei Wuxian is in an inn in a small town in Yunmeng, trying to keep a low profile to avoid the Jiangs. This may be pre-Wanxian but there's pining. There is a fish/carp Yao in the water and it eats a Jiang disciple. Wei Wuxian lets himself get eaten to rescue the disciple, but he is hurt. JWY brings him to Lotus Pier. I don't really remember what else happens, but the fish Yao is a very clear memory. Thank you for your help! 💖

10. I'm trying to find a fic, but I only remember a specific scene. It was LWJ wrapping his forehead ribbon around his and WWX's wrists in the cave after defeating the Xuanwu of Slaughter because they thought they weren't going to survive long enough to be rescued, and they hoped that if they did die, whoever found their bodies would burry them together. If anyone could help me find it, I would really appreciate it! @xxasphodelxx

11. hi! for fic finder: i read a oneshot star wars au where wwx was called darth neider and it was pov lan sizhui *literally yesterday* but it's not in my history and i can't find it in the star wars fusion/au/crossover tags. please help!

WWX.) / my honor and pleasure to have been of service. Don’t forget that you can use plain old general search engines! “Darth Neider” had to be an uncommon phrase, since Sith titles tend to be “Darth Obvious-English-Word-For-Something-Evil-Derivative” (the author was subtler, transposing “Xian” into the German word for “envy”); Built On Hope was the first English-language Google result.

15. Hello, can you help me find a fic? I think it was inspired by By Any Other Name. WWX goes to LP after he wakes up in MXY's body, and JC and JL, i think, get robes for him by a seammistress that later pretends to be WWX's family. 17. Hi guys! Thank you for all the hard work! I'm looking for a fic where Lan Wangji leaves his sect with A-Yuan and is joined by some other diaciples. 19. hiii! this one is for the fic finder! is a "fuck or die" sotuation in which wwx is mortally wounded. a lan doctor says the dual cultivation is the only way for him to survive. lwj immediately agrees because wwx is getting worse and worse very quickly, so they have a first time and wwx gets a little better at the end and moans. then they get together but i cant recall if iheres angts before that! i don't think it was sex polen or sex curse.
FOUND? 20. for fic finding - i remember a fic where WWX was a plant witch who ran a flower shop, LWJ brought in a dying plant and he fixed it up for him. LWJ was also wen yuan's adopted father, and I'm pretty sure he called WWX dr flowers. LWJ lived in the building he and wwx had in their childhood, wwx's parents passed away when he was very young and he inherited their magic, and it was a while before anyone found him. baby LWJ pushed food in through the letter slot, I believe.

I just saw a post that was like "wn went off so hard on jc during the golden core reveal bc then he doesn't have to think about thr ethics of what wwx did to him in his sister's name" or smth. Like, i'd say wn was being so harsh bc jc was being an asshole in the first place. But it's not the first time i've seen people compare wq doing the golden core exchange and wwx turning wn into a fierce corpse as the same "mad scientist trying this out"-thing and arguing neither should've happened (specifically that wwx has low self-esteem for one and stopped wn from entering the cycle or reincarnation for the other) so i was wondering what your thoughts on it were
This is long... so hahahahah, sorry.
This is actually cherry picking as it doesn't take into the account that Wen Ning, did not want to die. He had enough hate against his death, because he was brutally murdered, he was becoming a fierce corpse/jiangshi. His death was already karmically wrong.
Wei Wuxian intervened enough with that transformation to be able to change the usual method of what a jiangshi should be. It wasn't a disruption to his reincarnation cycle as he still retained his actual soul (the Hun) as does Song Lan. Wei Wuxian yes, out of guilt, fought to keep Wen Ning as Wen Ning after his death, he had to fight for the Hun to stay over the malicious Po.
For Song Lan, the basics can only be guessed as to what his catalyst was, but I think, it wasn't rage against the way of his death that made him undead, but that he didn't want Xiao Xingchen to blame himself for killing Song Lan, as it was Xue Yang who mastered that. It is what makes them the outlier of fierce corpses like Nie Mingjue who is not alive in the sense of humanity and feeling and is running off the sheer rage of his Po only, his humanity was lost because it moved on. Wen Ning the person (as well as Song Lan (The Hun that makes the human part) did not move on.
The core transfer was also done out of guilt from Wen Qing for HER clan, having attacked Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng's lives, and Wen Ning having taken it upon himself to protect the two as a consequence. We are also told nothing is stopping Wen Ning from finally passing by the author, he can move on when he wants to and feels like it. He gets to choose when he wants to die unlike that first one. He is grateful to Wei Wuxian for keeping him as alive as much as is possible and why he is fucking grateful to him and ride or die for life to Wei Wuxian. Unlike Jiang Cheng who multiple times was protected by Wei Wuxian and still decided to off him because he is vile and selfish.

by request of my esteemed mutual @monky I've collected a choice selection of bad porn tidbits from this exhaustively long, 80% smut get-together series Everyday and Always by alliterationhor. I don't know how to emphasize how purple this prose is. expect way too many adjectives, a lot of passive voice, and a lot of repetition. it's decently characterized and the language flows uniquely so it's not all bad. enjoy
Wei Wuxian supposed that it should not come as a surprise that Lan Wangji was just as quiet in bed as he was otherwise. But that did make it difficult to determine whether or not Lan Wangji liked what he was doing. Perhaps it was necessary to take a different approach to acquire more precise information.
this made me laugh. it's exactly what I would imagine novel wwx doing, maybe in a better series
...
“Ridiculous.” “Ha ha ha ha ha!” Wei Wuxian threw his head back as laughter burst from his mouth.
this isn't terrible, just awkward
The sight was so obscene and so beautiful and Lan Wangji was absolutely captivated by the wanton rise and fall of those hips fucking his cock into Lan Wangji’s hand.
see there's a lot of telling in this, rather than showing. there's a fair amount of showing too, tbh, and I actually kind of liked ch1 because they really did nail the atmosphere and their character dynamic. but the longer the series went on, the more generic and bland the scenes got. and there really is so much of this language. like oh tell me again how it felt so good and they're so happy 🙄
“Yes, Lan Zhan …” The words flowed from his mouth with a deep moan. “… more …”
passive voice, very common in this fic
Wei Wuxian panted as he looked at the ceiling, feeling limp and exhausted and absolutely amazed and brimming with such an unbelievable sense of satisfaction.
...
and the intense heat where their skins touched felt so impossibly amazing it was difficult to believe it was real.
see above. sometimes just telling us is fine but it's not the same as using creative or interesting language
But soon the kisses deepened into a deliciously decadent connection of open mouths and slippery tongues and heavy breaths
no comment. just look at that adjective use
“Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian’s voice was dark and deadly. “Who was it?” “Who? What do you mean?” “This isn’t your fist time, right?” he accused, the words brimming with a furious jealousy. “Tell me who it was because they have to die.” Lan Wangji shook his head, not understanding the abrupt lunacy of the topic. “What are—?” Wei Wuxian’s insides erupted into a panic. Lan Wangji was still fond of this person? Protecting this person? Oh no, what if Jiang Cheng was right and it was Mo Xuanyu? He couldn’t kill Mo Xuanyu, Mo Xuanyu was already dead!
well-characterized except for this, maybe
A wide, warm grin curved the crimson coloured shape of Wei Wuxian’s lips
THIS. I've wanted to mention this line for ages. bc like...what?
Soft kisses continued to fall on Wei Wuxian’s skin as an erotic symphony of moans rose from his mouth and rippled through the air around them.
see here we are again with the passive voice. it makes the scene awkward and feel disconnected from the actual characters. saying 'that skin' or 'those lips' have the same effect
“… tell me, Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian murmured, his voice a compelling current of the purest desire.
...
Both nipples received soft, wet kisses and a few teasing licks until they became hard points under the amorous attention.
passive voice AND overuse of heavyhanded adjectives
His eyes fluttered closed as those sinful lips dropped slow kisses down the muscled plane of his stomach, and a quiet groan left his mouth when those lustful lips kissed along the length of his erection above the fabric of the trousers
all the same issues + repetitive
Soft kisses fell like raindrops on that succulent skin,
I just think skin should not be described as 'succulent'
The erotic words plucked with precision at Lan Wangji’s nerves
...some alliteration, I guess?
He silenced that beautiful, vulgar mouth with his own and pushed that beautiful, wicked body down onto the bed beneath his own.
both too much repetition and not enough. awkward
“Yes …!” Wei Wuxian whimpered, as he felt the hot splash of Lan Wangji’s semen against his insides.
this was a terrible mental image. I have read a lot of porn at this point and a lot of it has been bad, but little as been as unappealing as this line. also don't call it semen 😭
While they kissed and kissed, the moans pouring from Wei Wuxian’s mouth grew louder... Wei Wuxian gave a muffled cry of pleasure into Lan Wangji’s devoted mouth.
...
When he confessed, Lan Wangji had thought that if he was somehow fortunate enough for Wei Wuxian to accept his feelings and allow Lan Wangji to remain by his side, then perhaps Wei Wuxian would also accept his touch and his kisses, in carefully measured amounts
no grammar issues, but another characterization problem. lwj would not expect wwx to tolerate his kisses if wwx does't feel the same way, and lwj wouldn't want that anyway. this kind of goes against the plot of ch1, but there's no way lwj would pursue intimacy with wwx unless he KNEW wwx felt the same way as he did. he's too all-or-nothing to be comfortable just taking scraps if wwx wasn't as devoted as him
“You are not too sore?” Lan Wangji questioned in a quiet voice, keeping the touch of his fingers light as they circled the still-squishy hole
'questioned' is repetitive and unnecessary. also don't call it squishy 😭
“I want you inside me, Er-gege,” he continued, biting his lips on a seductive smile as he stared into the dark brown depths of Lan Wangji’s eyes. “… please, I want you to fuck me with your magnificent cock!”
this was a little embarrassing to read
The deep groan of delight that rose from the back of Lan Wangji’s throat as Wei Wuxian’s hand began to stroke his cock was a divinely debauched sound that made Wei Wuxian ache for more.
adding 'divinely debauched' to my daily vocabulary
his body had no trouble relaxing into the subtle sting of being penetrated by the large length of this cock.
...
a wicked grin curving the red shape of his mouth
...
felt the hot splash of semen against his insides
😨 AGAIN???
Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian teased, pouting sweetly. “At a time like this, shouldn’t you call me something else?”
of the handful of words this author uses way too much, 'sweetly' is one of them
“Mn,” Lan Wangji answered, gently stroking the skin under his hands. “Dangerous.”
another nitpick. whose skin? obviously it's wwx's, but since it's so rarely specified there's constant mental images of the characters we know in this scene with a plethora of disembodies lips, skin, cheeks, faces, necks, backs, etc.
a soft kiss anointed the crimson-coloured shape of Lan Wangji’s mouth.
this author and the crismon shape of people's mouths...
a golden light gilded the edge of the window frame.
this is just a nitpick but if something is being gilded then by definition the thing doing the gilding is golden. repetitive
and finally, the original posted line
he loved Lan Wangji’s angelic face gazing up at him as if he was some kind of angel.
well I suppose it got the message across

Feel free to ignore this ask but I'm not really sure how to feel about LQR/Lan clan in mdzs. On one hand I really buy the idea that he loves his nephews and enjoys teaching and in general his teachings are good, as well as the Lan rules. But I do think it's stressed a bit, especially in the novel, that the Lan clan and LQR by extension have strayed a bit from "spirit of the rule" to following and making rules that are very repressive (off the top of my head: don't laugh or smile without cause). And while I know that LQR loves LWJ and had no reason to believe in WWX after everything, I forgot how the discipline whip almost killed LWJ and the scars are designed to never heal and are a representation of ultimate shame. I know LWJ needed to be disciplined in some way bc he did hurt Lan elders but there is this sense that LQR punished LWJ so much hoping that he would break and when he didn't, he doubled down. Idk like I hate the way the fandom engages with the Lan and LQR without nuance but at the same time I don't think it would be out of character for him to continue to try to make WWX and LWJ's lives difficult. I really adore fics etc that explore the idea of him changing for the better though and am really tired of takes that are like nothing gets better and WWX has to deal with both JC and the Lan clan hating him. Its exhausting. You're the only MDZS blog I trust so I just wanted to ramble about this issue to you :)
aw thank you! it's nice of you to say that
wrt lan qiren... i can't fault him for his dedication to the rules and to orthodox cultivation when he is safeguarding hundreds of years of tradition and legacy, and when his attitude allowed him to not only maintain but elevate the pristine reputation of the sect he suddenly had to lead. the teachings and values of the lan have always served him well, and he never had the incentive to re-evaluate his understanding of the rulebook like lan wangji eventually would; as a result, the lan precepts become the framework through which he analyses wei wuxian's actions, and not knowing the important context behind these actions further condemns them in lan qiren's mind.
his treatment of wei wuxian is unfair and lan wangji's punishment is undeserved, but the reason he behaves like this is not because he's an unreasonable abusive conservative who lives to make wangxian's life difficult - it's because, from his point of view, wei wuxian is morally bankrupt and leading lan wangji down a path of depravity in an uncomfortable parallel to the drama that destroyed qingheng-jun. protecting his nephews and his clan are always his priorities and the knowledge available to him, alongside the values that have been instilled in him, led him to strongly believe that wei wuxian was an enemy to those goals. so, imo, if he grew to understand wei wuxian's motivations and the way he fits into the narrative of heroism painted by the lan sect's teachings, the animosity would end. that's what redeems lan qiren to me.

have you any rational explanation as to why you're so obsessed with pingxie? I mean your video drove me into that pit, but they just blew me away with their love and I do not get why them specifically, since I've been through so many great chinese boys love... help
looooooooooooooooool I know what I picked in "you have to pick one" game and I can give many arguments about this one cause I've thought about it a lot.
I think to me it’s just the fact that in Chinese bl (and just in many of my ships in general) it’s mostly always this, to say, pattern of... one is on his mission to save the world or humanity/with hero complex or just has this goal he tries to reach that is the most important and the other one is just trying to save/protect that one (who’s running around) without caring for that damn world haha. And only later on the first one wakes up to realize that maybe it all doesn’t matter that much.
It’s like WWX is always tries to save everyone, but LZ mainly just wants WWX to be safe. Tang Fan is on his missions to save ppl while Sui Zhou’s main priority is saving Tang Fan. Yunlan same with Shen Wei. Wen Kexing puts revenge first for a long time until he gets that it's in fact not the most important thing. Xie Lian is just a martyr who cares about everyone and Hua Cheng is obviously all only about him, etc.
It’s not meant in a bad way or anything bc I love them but it’s always this kind of split balance when for one it’s “all for you” and the other one is still like doesn’t get it and realizes it pretty late. And while they’re both ready to die for each other ofc, at the beginning for some it’s just his hero complex of saving everyone (not bc that one is special for him). Then at the end there’s a wake up call and he’s "enlightened". And finally realizes that OH maybe world isn’t as important as that one person to me. Oh in worse cases this one has to almost die or really die for the other one to finally get there.
And while I love this trope I mean it also fits many anime ships too and kdramas too. For me it was just fascinating to finally see the pair in Chinese world where both put each other first without regards for other ppl (cause that's my personal kink haha).
And what’s so nice to me about them is the fact that there’s no like “I’m trying to save humanity” thing going on there, like they’ve basically just met each other on the same deadly journey and then when they fall in love for both of them their main priority is the other one. And I’ve just never seen a pair such equally fighting for each other. Bc it’s really always mainly one fighting for the other one, while that one is fighting for smth else entirely.
Idk if it makes much sense. I again do not mean that in all these pairings someone would not if needed fight for the other one, but it’s like not the main story. It’s not exactly them equally protecting each other from the whole world thoroughout the thing. And I just find it fascinating with pingxie. They did put each other first even when Wu Xie was not that "agressive" lol, but then there's also a part when the tides change so drastically that it's oh so incredible. It's like if there'd be a 2nd book of MDZS and WWX would be fighting against the world for LZ you know.
I mean imagine this state of mind like what WWX is for LZ and what XL is for HC and what YL is for SW but from both directions in a pairing lol. That’s about it.
Idk how to explain it really. The intensity of their feelings for each other MATCH is what I mean.
And ppl are gonna yell rn at me probably but there is such a thing as one has it more for the other one. One loves more than the other one. It usually exists. And it’s not specifically just different amount of feelings, it's just a bit different kind of meaning. And that’s why they’re so special to me in Chinese fandom. I mean it’s one of the reasons I’m so in love with their love.
Tbh my very first reason tho was that I'm just personally agree with the fact that you can't fall in love with someone for no reason. Like for me personally its nonsense. And if Qiling is just incapable of trusting anyone cause of his whole life story, Wu Xie is just unable to feel anything for ppl he doesn't care for. So it's the first kind of pairing when its not really one of them "likes ppl a lot" you know. Wu Xie is like.. he's great with ppl, but those he really cares for are actually short amount. He is himself always surprised in the book when he doesn't feel anything about most lol He's like "why do I not care? Shouldn't I care?" xD And I'm like "no, sweetie, it's okay, cause they're basically nobody to you" lol. So for both of them this whole road of developing their feelings for each other due to their actions and seeing them fall for each other and knowing why they fall for each other was the best part for me.
Like Wangxian is also besides the story my favorite bc of their dynamics of opposites attract and also the fact that I also saw why LZ fell for him and vice versa, but for example Hualian I've never felt close to emotionally to this ship bc to me it's like their love story was executed in a way that made me feel like they didn't have a choice as opposite to choosing each other, you know what I mean. HC from the quite non-coherent age decided to live for XL just cause he didn't wanna live and XL just basically had no one on his side besides HC so it kinda happened. Like despite that whole speech of "I've seen you at your worst etc", which is not really surprising cause you've had whole 800 years I was still not very into their whole "love story" personally (which is again surprising, cause these amount of years should be more impressive than you know 10 or 12 haha, althought we have a world record of 10.000 too xD). Bc like it's all great that the person that caught him was XL and he turned out great, but like what if he wasn't and he dedicated his life to some blob lmao. I really do not mind the red string of thing fate thing, cause wangxian and pingxie are that too, but like there got to be reasons for that to become a red string, not like "first I chose him, then I realized why", it should be "I know now why I chose him" haha. Like Qiling who at first didn't give a fuck about anyone, but eventually developed extra-sense for Wu Xie being in danger, just cause he fell in love.
Anywho I can go on, but they're just my type of love story I guess haha :)
P.S. did you ever watch some hetero kdramas for example, where main characters are ready to die for each other and will always find each other in some other life, but at the end you're sitting there like "but I do not get why it is the way it is tho" bc what started it was literally them just seeing each other once? xD And at the end of the show everything seems fine, but you just do not care and the whole story didn't give you any feels cause.. well, cause. I just personally do not get it.
I'm always team you initially can't feel for a stranger anything (except for being horny occasionally maybe lol) cause you don't know them. And you can't decide that some person is someone you're gonna dedicate your life to without knowing them. So like "disney" stuff isn't quite for me. That being said I do not mean it in a way that it's wrong to like that kind of stories. Like pls don't take it seriously and think that I'm mocking smth. I think it's all fine, cause like fiction has nothing to do with real life really and you can enjoy whatever. I was just speaking for myself.
P.P.S. and ppl are gonna be mad again but I truly think it's cause their relationships were written by a man and more than that unintentionally. It's not usual specific BL written by a woman from their own perspective for us (other women) you know. But just to compare many things the author of the "Dinghai Fusheng Records" and "Tianbao Fuyao Lu" is also male and the dynamics there are also very different. Again I do not mean that smth is better or worse, you pick for yourself. But pingxie, well, it wasn't even meant to be a BL, their feelings for each other just naturally grew during the story to the point where the author was like oh well duuuh even I see that they're in love with each other lol so it's bound to be special anyways haha

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
What I Liked
actually good enemies to lovers even tho idt it was ever explicitly mentioned that it was enemies to lovers. but like. wangxian past dynamic of cocky hotheaded wwx n strict rule-adhering lwj n how they just...clash, bc wwx is naturally so boisterous and annoying and he just keeps bothering lwj, and how lwj was like nonsense but he??? does he like wwx???? and he just! gets so annoyed!! and when their ideologies stayed the same but their methodologies clashed and how lwj still wanted to save wwx but can't quite get it across. man, that part hurt.
ok but like im a huge sucker for the "even if the world is against you, i'll always be on your side" trope and the siege against wwx at nightless city w lwj defending him n attacking his own sect's ppl is like the epitome of that trope n im so in love oh my god. n then... how lwj recognized him as mxy n like. protected him from jc as if hes trying to make up for 13 yrs ago.
jin ling's uncle
jin ling lowkey reminds me of sun xiang n i love sun xiang
tangentially related: season 3 ending song "wuwang" is soo good, i love the lyrics, it's so tender and the imagery the lyrics paint is so beautiful and vivid
the plot is tied together so well! the cause and effect and the world wwx and lwj live in r so, so vividly described. like everything makes sense in the bigger picture, no one's fully right or wrong, everyone has reasons for behaving the way they do and they all receive the consequences, whether good or bad.
oh!! the xiao xingchen flashback!!! i think that was the first moment that rly sold me to mdzs. it was like watching a trainwreck and i mean it in the best way possible, the way one knows the ending is sad but that it's inevitable bc it's in the past, but even knowing that doesn't help the sadness.
What I Disliked
i want so badly an extra chapter dedicated to lwj. lxc mentioned how he wanted a flute with such a lost look on his face, branded himself with the same brand wwx got in the xuanwu cave incident n like. i want to read abt his emotional turmoil during that period of time. he's so emotionally repressed!! let me read more abt his feelings!!!!!
the way the story interweaved flashbacks n present events give me so much whiplash
more abt the donghua but the sheer injustice jiang cheng’s characterization faced at the end brings me so much rage
Notes
THE INCENSE BURNER TRILOGY LMAO that shit was Wild icb wwx used bichen as a dildo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i honestly dont know if its a pro or a con it was so wtf
ok i just imagine lwj eventually quietly moving on with life but like. he wont ever fall in love with anyone else. he will keep remembering wwx. n im so. idk. i just imagine stoic and icy lwj, keeping emperors smile in his room for wwx but wwx never returning. lwj and his song wangxian. lwj raising lsz as the last remnant of what wwx had dedicated himself to protect. im so. god.
i literally went from "this wn is ok n i understand why its so popular" to "CRYING OVER WANGXIAN" (edit: now i am a jiang cheng stan)
i felt intense dugeuns rewatching the clip of wwx playing lwj's love song for him when he was subduing wn in the beginning he was walking backwards n then crashed into lwj n i was like,,, omg,,, lwj recognized him from the beginning bc of this,,,
i started mdzs expecting the emotional outcome of a regular danmei novel, and ended up a crying jiang cheng stan, and i think that says a lot abt mxtx as a writer
Quotes
He wasn't scared of falling. All these years, he'd fallen many times. But falling on the ground still hurt, after all. If someone was there to catch him, it'd be more than wonderful.

A follow-up bc chengxian is always on my mind and these twin prides will never leave me alone:
Honestly I've always been a sucker for loss of innocence arc/immense loyalty to a bad system being broken so I really enjoyed LWJ's personal character arc. And his internal crisis between his sect and teachings vs. what WWX has enlightened him to definitely shows.
But, my issue mainly comes from the thing where when he is WWX (post-reseruction) he kind of just follows WWX's lead in the CQL. Like it's one thing to be content with where your morality lies and the fact that the person it aligns with is now with you.
But like there was no debate for example with the Paperman scene where they find NMJ's head (not sure if it played out the same way in the novel). Like they just try to burst in and catch JGY off guard to confront him which is not very different from what happened at Carp Tower when WWX finds out the truth about the Wen Camps. Like correct idea but bad execution to get the outcome you want.
So, like, what I meant by with the blind following (I always adore devotion tropes) is that he never suggests alternative ways to get the same solution. Or even ask WWX to walk him through his plans so LWJ can see if it can be improved or changed in some way (though I do commend him for trying to atleast do some harm reduction towards WWX's behaviour with the "come to GusuLan" thing -> though this also feels like pre-revival and post-revival WWX seemed like he needed a place to hide out).
That aside, I do thing Wang Y!bo did a wonderful job with LWJ, especially since they probably cut down on some development due to Ch!nese censorship and all. Like his face when he calls back the line WWX gave about bridges(?) like the one at Carp Tower was incredible and conveyed so much.
Maybe it's because borderline unhealthy, feral relationships are my jam that Chengxian really does it for me. Like they yell and fight and it gets ugly but you know its that way due to the fact that they love each other, not in spite of it. And just the whole "love is not always enough" thing. It's one of the reasons I also love Chengqing too (like god tier for the CQL for coming up with that one).
Also just JC's face as WWX plays his flute at the temple. Like he's giving permission to WWX to use demonic cultivation, the thing that killed his sister to protect his sister's son, his nephew and the most important person in his life because JC trusts WWX this much? Priceless (Wang Zhuocheng truly is an icon).
Tumblr media
god op i literally adore your brain 😩❤️ i actually think your interpretation of lwj is exquisite, like ur gonna make me rethink any possible ways i had ever considered writing him (this is VERY /pos)
i do agree that lwj definitely should have idk…pushed more? during the paperman/jgy scene. that whole arc kinda felt like mxtx going “god im so fucking tired of writing this part” bc i probably would have done the same LOL
lwj immediately telling his brother he trusted wwx with his life/to always be correct/whatever was a very sexy but stupid moment tbh. like if i had been lxc i probably would have burst into laughter 💀
if jc had been in this scene, he DEFINITELY would have been like 🤨🤨 wwx are you SURE. can we go over this again. the foils btw lwj & jc are genuinely one of my favorite things about the novel (fave is actually xuexi4o’s foil to w4ngxian) and probably why i adore w4ngchengx1an as a throuple. wwx gets the best of both worlds and that is just so important to me.
GOD I AGREE…..wang y1bo did a SPLENDID job. first of all his voice is 😳 i have SUCH a thing for deep voices. being able to see his jaw tighten whenever wwx did some dumb shit was so good. i do generally like idol actors (bc my standards are very low and i like having fun) but even by idol actor standards: he did a phenomal job!
i cant even lie bro: the more fucked up the chengxian is, the more i love it. like YES give me unhealthy dependency. give me verbal abuse-turned-self-hatred. give me the inherent nausea of realizing you’re in love with your brother. YES!!!!!!
i also adore chengqing. literally cql director’s brain was so big. i KNOW wen qing pegs him bro
i havent hit that scene in cql yet but i know. i KNOW i am going to be thinking about “the thing that killed his sister to protect his sister’s son, his nephew and the most important thing in his life because he trusts WWX that much?” the entire time. (the scene happens in every other adaptation so dw i wasnt spoiled!)
anyway. i absolutely adore your perceptions of cql, op. i am shoving this ask in my mouth bc its just so good. idk how much sense my 9am-no-coffee thoughts make LOL

I loved your fem lwj take on things. How would thibgs go if WWX was the lady? Other than ppl assuming she stood up for the Wens bcs she jad feelings for WN ( and that Yuan was hers)
Heyyy friend, I think I’ve seen a couple of girl!wwx fics floating around in ao3 so i certainly won’t be the first :P.
Also I completely misread your ask initially, I thought you were asking me what I think would happen if A-Yuan was WWX’s kid, and I was like oh?? But then I realize wait... I can make it worse.
Today, I decided that my mortal soul doesn’t matter, so here we go. Let’s see how accursed I can make this idea:
[1]
It started with Jiang Cheng. Jiang Wanyin had set out for the Burial Mount with the explicit goal of throttling speaking with Wei Wuxian, but what greeted him at the entrance of the “Demon Subduing Palace” — more of a cave than anything really — was not his martial sister, but Wen Ning. Well, what had once been Wen Ning.
Black veins ran across his pale, ashen face, down his equally ashen neck , and into the major veins beneath his clavicles covered by the collars of his black threadbare robes. Lifeless eyes, white as his skin, stared into a void the living could not see. There were talismans littering his body, and Jiang Cheng knew that when he spoke to this fierce corpse, he was not speaking to the young Wen boy, but to his mistress who controlled him with her demonic cultivation.
Wei Wuxian refused to face him. Refused him explanation. Refused him closure.
“Er-jie!” Jiang Cheng screamed into the stony expressionless face of Wen Qionglin. “If you continue to protect them, then I can’t protect you!!”
There was no response.
Suddenly, just as Jiang Cheng was about to kick and fight his way into the cave, Wen Ning thrusted out his right fist, and in his grasp was a piece of purple silk. Jiang Cheng unfolded the silk, vaguely recognizing that it had been cut from someone’s robe, and saw what was wrapped within was a slip of parchment.
割袍断义*, the paper read. Tell the world that I, Wei Wuxian, first disciple of Yunmeng Jiang has forever defected (Note: 割袍断义- to rip one's robe as a sign of repudiating a sworn brotherhood (idiom)).
With this, there was nothing left to say. Hurt and furious, Jiang Wanyin threw the piece of parchment onto the dirt ground, grinded his heel down on it, and left the Burial Mount without ever having drawn Sandu.
Inside the cave, Wen Qing held Wei Wuxian’s hand. “Why won’t you just tell him? He’s your brother; he can help you, you can —”
Wei Wuxian’s mile long stare seemed to be gazing at something — someone — very far away. Slowly, she placed her other palm over her belly, which horrifically was already starting to round out. “Nobody can help me now, Qing-jie.”
“I can,” said Wen Qing, blunt as ever. “I can make it go away, if you want.”
“No.” A droplet of tear escaped pass long lashes. “No.”
[2]
It continued with Jiang Cheng.
On a snowy night, the first winter after Wei Wuxian escaped with the Wen remnants to the Burial Mount, Jiang Cheng was rudely awakened from his slumber by a less-than-stealthy intruder breaking and entering into his bed chamber.
Zidian whipped through the air, lighting the room with her eerie violet glow, before the intruder could think to take one more step. It was a man, judging from his silhouette colliding against the wall and the pained groan he made in response. The very next second, the tail of Zidian coiled tightly around his neck and dragged him across the floor towards beneath Jiang Cheng’s waiting foot.
The Sect Master of Yunmeng Jiang summoned Sandu, ready to deliver the final strike, but just as his blade sailed towards the intruder’s chest, a pale arm jutted upwards, blocking Sandu’s descent and revealing a pale hand holding a … a...
Even in the dark, Jiang Cheng immediately recognized the mahogany comb.
“Jiang — ! Zongzhu —!” The man croaked out urgently, throat still stomped on by Jiang Cheng’s foot. It was - it was Wen Ning?!
Jiang Cheng looked him over. He was pale, yes, but his eyes appeared human. His hair was brushed and haphazardly done up in a farmer’s top knot. He was wearing farmer’s clothing too, probably more inconspicuous for travel than his Ghost General getup.
“Jiang-zongzhu! P—please!!”
No, impossible.
“Wei — Wei-guniang—”
Jiang Cheng lifted his foot and dragged Wen Ning up in a split second. “What’s wrong with Wei Wuxian?!”  Wen Ning coughed and shook his head desperately. “No time to explain. My sister asked me to fetch you. Please, you have to come! Wei-guniang’s life is in danger! If you won’t come, I’ll...I’ll have to go to Gusu, and I don’t know if - if -”
Jiang Cheng followed Wen Ning.
For speed, they travelled by sword, but even so, dawn was breaking by the time they arrived. The crowd of Burial Mount’s villagers huddling anxiously outside of the Demon Subduing Palace parted for them upon their arrival. Jiang Cheng took a moment to gather himself and square his shoulders. Whatever it was; he was ready.
He was wrong. None of the dozens of scenario he had agonized over on the flight here could have prepared him for what awaited him inside.
Wen Qing, pale and drenched in sweat, was near complete spiritual collapse, and without Wen Qing’s spiritual energy sustaining her, the single tenuous thread by which Wei Wuxian’s life hung on would have undoubtedly snapped under the toil and devastation her body had been put through.
There was so much blood, so, so much blood everywhere, and amidst the blood, there was a baby.
Fuck.
Jiang Cheng transfused his sister half of his total spiritual reserve over the course of a day, while an exhausted but unrelenting Wen Qing worked diligently under blood-soaked sheets.
Then at dusk, when the storm finally passed, Jiang Cheng sat at the mouth of the cave with a tiny, perfect little human — a girl, a niece! —  in his arms and cursed Lan Wangji’s name.
Wen Qing was extremely clear with them: 孩子要是留在这里,养不活。
If the newborn was left to be raised at the Burial Mount, she would not live. And so, because parting was inevitable from the start, Wei Wuxian adamantly refused to hold or nurse the child. Her child.
I can’t. If I do, I won’t be able to let her go. Those dark eyes burned with more than just the delirium of her childbed fever. For once, Jiang Cheng could not find it in himself to argue.
Thus, he took his niece home and named her Jiang Yan 江曕. The name was not his doing. His foolish, misguided, stubborn sister had stroked her daughter’s soft, baby cheek and whispered it to her as a farewell gift.
Yan - to be bathed in daylight. In the end, when given a choice, Wei Wuxian still opted for her child to walk on broad sunny road.
It made Jiang Cheng wonder why, then, she would choose the dark twisted path for herself instead.
[3]
It ended with Jiang Cheng.
The truth was simple: Jiang Wanyin killed his shijie Wei Wuxian. He did. He meant to.
He killed her. But that did not mean he wanted her dead.
In one day, he had lost both of his sisters, leaving two orphans in their wake. Jiang Cheng could not ignore the cruel irony of their fate: one’s father murdered by his aunt, and other’s mother murdered by her uncle.
This was the kind of tragedy fairytales were made of, and if there were anything left in him to shed tears over it, he would.  Standing amongst Nevernight’s carnage, he could not dredge up even a single drop of tear.
Jiang Cheng didn’t know how he could return home to Lotus Pier to face that cherub face, always so happy, so sweet, so utterly untainted by the world. She had her mother’s smile. Yan'er was starting to learn how to speak. Her first words were da-da.
Da-da. Die-die. Father.
He was standing beside her father now.
Lan Wangji. Devastated. Destroyed. …Deceived.
Jiang Cheng hated him so much, so fucking much that for one insane second, he thought about telling Lan Wangji the truth just to see what would happen. Maybe he would run Jiang Cheng through with his Bichen - that would be a relief now, wouldn’t it? - or maybe he would jump after Wei Wuxian.
Truly, if he knew, he would. Jump, that is. Jiang Cheng was almost entirely sure. Oh the utter melodrama that would inspire indeed!
But then...
Wei Ying birthed you a daughter, a lovely, perfect, blessed little girl, and she carried that secret to her grave. I may be damned by my actions, but you, who have done nothing for her and taken everything, why should you deserve something as sacred as the truth?
Jiang Cheng turned away.
He was acutely aware that one day Jiang Yan may very well be the literal death of him. After all — 杀母之仇不共戴天 — one cannot tolerate living under the same sky as the murderer of one’s mother.
Be that as it may, he would raise Jiang Yan well, just as he promised. Unlike his sister, he would not break his word. Jiang Yan was of Lotus Pier, of Yunmeng, like her mother and grandfather before her. That for him, was enough.
Jiang Cheng clutched Sandu and gripped Zidian. Whatever his fate, he already made peace with it, and the rest was inconsequential.
One day, he may die, but today he lives, and so as long as he lives, Jiang Yan and all of Yunmeng Jiang will be protected . So as long as he lives, they will flourish.
[...and in between]
On the streets of Yiling, Lan Wangji tilted his head inquisitively at Wei Wuxian and the little boy at her side and asked, “This child, he...”
In response, Wei Wuxian patted her chest in a self-declarative kind of way and announced, “Oh this child, I birthed him!”
He stared at her in shell-shocked silence, his mind racing with panicked thoughts of but that’s impossible — that was just once — even if — the boy is too old to be —
“怎么,蓝湛,不要我们娘儿俩了?” What, Lan Zhan, you don’t want the child and I?
“Wei— Wei Ying—”
Then of course, she had laughed, and Lan Wangji thought no more of it.
Just a joke. A silly joke.
In time, he would come to realize his mistake.
~~~
[A/N]: I’m not even a little bit sorry.
Me after seeing the post about familial duties and how people spun it in jc's favor.
Me also waiting for a person claiming to be chinese/ chinese diaspora/ knowing chinese culture to pop up again and say how imp debts are and blame wwx for his debt to the jiangs WHILE ignoring that one big point of the story is jc not paying his debts to the wen siblings at all. (i know it's been done so many times but it keeps happening again and again and it amuses me and horrifies me at the same time.)
(wwx did not owe anything in the first place because a sect too benefits from a genius disciple being it's head disciple. He also paid back the 'so called debt' by hundred folds by giving his golden core, providing solid backing in war, attracting potential disciples to build the sect and also enabling your sect to have a good portion of war spoils they wouldn't have were it not for your efforts (jc only fought in war because he had wwx's gc, shut up jc stans))
Re THIS post.
lol, usually they don't even claim it. It's: "a friend of a friend of a friend said killing toddlers is fine >:-/. In this essay I will explain how mxtx is wrong, and it was actually dishonorable for WWX not to leave Granny Wen & A Yuan to die like Wen scum! It's only bc the novel is only from WWX's POV [it’s not] that ppl feel bad for the war refugees!"...
It's so weird when ppl accuse WWX of being ungrateful to the Jiangs/jc like he didn't survive in the BM for three months without the core he gave up to jc, to come back and avenge them. To help win the war and make sure jc was nice and comfy in his Clan Leader position. Like we don't already know that jc is a sheep who has never wanted to move an inch out of his way to help others, or allow WWX to help others, so maybe his words about how he "can't" protect others should be taken with a big ass boulder of salt and understood as the lack of will rather than way. Plus WWX DIED thanks to the big ass siege against him and the people he was protecting that jiang cheng STRATEGIZED and LED. So WWX owes the Jiangs a big fat zero. And you can sense that in his new life; That freedom. WWX doesn't shy away from responsibility, hell he immediately collects the juniors under his wing, he just doesn't want anymore to do with jiang cheng.
ep6: oh shit, there’s women in this show!
Tumblr media
the fact that nhs knocks with a secret code. lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
every single time I see this scene I have the same thought and its ‘jc tells wwx to stop being gay for alcohol’ because that’s what wwx is doing here metaphorically
Tumblr media
I LOVE when they’re all scrambling here and wwx crosses his legs and fixes his hair
Tumblr media
mind-control talisman must be insanely powerful to work on lwj so it must have some kind of constraints, like it’s not a total mind control, the subject has to be caught off-guard, etc. I like to think wwx realized how unethical it was after this and destroyed it but it’s a very strong magic spell to just drop and never mention again (LIKE TIME-STOPPING)
Tumblr media
cut-sleeve? is this an intentional nod? it seems deliberate enough. is wwx in-universe testing the waters? he seems to think lwj is straight later on
Tumblr media
THIS SHOT. SO CUTE
Tumblr media
how he says wife...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think lwj def knows he’s gay he’s just resigned to being alone for life because he can’t fathom being allowed to marry anyone but a woman and he doesn’t want to do that obviously. also he’s isolated bc of the autism and reputation... god, this scene is so sad
Tumblr media
I didn’t realize this happened so early in the series! it’s so cute!
wcz is wearing jiang purple
this kid is SO well cast, he looks so similar to wwx esp around the eyes
Tumblr media
lwj’s posture is killing me he is so fucking funny drunk
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this set is SO pretty
Tumblr media
this scene REALLY jumped out to me on my first watch - wwx sees lwj not bend and is determined to match him. not to be outdone
Tumblr media
HE IMMEDIATELY STARTS PLAYING UP HIS WOUNDS WHEN THEY MEET WITH LXC. god wwx is such a delight
Tumblr media
aww, lxc. nobody else would talk about him to his mother. this is so kind bc obviously it means a lot to him
Tumblr media
actually I think wwx is perfectly within his rights to be annoyed that lqr treats him differently based on something his mom did. come on, lxc!
Tumblr media
SHOE FLYING AWAY. THERE IT GOES. LOVE THAT MOMENT
Tumblr media
at this point I think wwx has a crush but he also just wants to be friends so if lwj isn’t interested in him that way (and at this point he def thinks lwj is straight)  he still wants to hang out. I don’t think he expects his feelings to be very strong and in fact, in the future I read him as avoidant and scared of his feelings precisely because they’re more powerful than he knows what to do with. but for now it’s just a crush that he thinks he’s okay with not going anywhere as long as they get to hang out
Tumblr media
lwj’s hair is so pretty here. this shot of wwx does make me laugh
Tumblr media
hm. this means nothing to me. they’re not at a point yet where it means anything to them either and it was done just to protect wwx so *shrug*
Tumblr media
wwx sheepishly getting off the ancestral table and then makinh gestures to dust it off is so fucking funny he has so much personality and charm
Tumblr media
ik this is supposed to be a romantic moment but the guy looks so head empty. nothing going on behind those eyes. what do they brits say? gormless? he’s gormless
Tumblr media
that post like ‘he becomes excited and deferential at the sight of a lesbian’ very true.
lwj doesn’t interact with many women throughout the show but he’s always very polite to them. probably still misogynistic, as every man is in this series is, but arguably less so than wwx (calls jl a mistress to demean him) and jc (has that stupid list of ideal wife qualities, genuinely tried to marry wq away from her family). he clearly respects ly a lot as his elder and I would love to have seen more interactions between him and other women.
Tumblr media
heyyy demon subdue palace
Tumblr media
ly being the only female leader of a very conservative and patriarchal sect is so fascinating honestly. would love to see more of her
also the rabbits with headbands might be dumb, but I think they’re cute
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
every single thing ly says also applies to wwx. the show hitting you over the head with parallels: DO YOU SEE HOW WWX AND LAN YI ARE SIMILAR. DO YOU SEE IT?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I fucking love parallels. they made those women lesbians together
personal highlights:
lwj slouched over when drunk
wwx playing up his wounds when they see lxc
that shoe flying into the pond
wwx making a show of dusting off the table he was sitting on
when people call wangxian a boring ship i want to gentle reach out, cupping their cheeks in my hand, look them straight in the eye and ask if they read the book. did they miss the way that wwx’s presence helped encourage lwj to develop his own passions and opinions outside what he was taught to have? did they miss the way that lwj was the first person who was ever wwx’s equal and challenged him like no one else but still saw wwx as human, as fallible and worthy of protection? did they miss the way that all of their “relationship drama” stemmed from the fact that: a) lwj genuinely acted like he hated wwx in his first life and wwx was never shown any different until it was too late and that wwx could never afford to take the time to work through his own feelings even though they were clearly there bc he was so busy just trying to stay alive and he just wasn’t ready for a relationship and b) the fact that wwx’s closely guarded secrets and insistent pride and confidence that he could handle himself even though he was barely holding on combined with lwj’s moral rigidity and unwillingness to change or adapt meant that they were constantly at odds? did they miss the way that their growth together as love interests and independently (inspired by each other or just by themselves) is some of the most wonderfully written arcs ever, creating dynamic characters who progress in a way that wholly and completely suits them? did they miss the way that even when they were at odds, wwx and lwj still cared enough spend time together and check in on each other? did they miss the way that wwx, who has never been the first preference and has always been left behind alone, marries lwj, who welcomes him into his life and his family full-heartedly and puts him and his happiness above all else? did they miss the way that wwx does the same? did they miss the way they parallel their own parents’ and their relationships and how they have to overcome the legacies/trauma of their parents as well as themselves and they do it because they’re such a good couple? did they miss the way that wwx and lwj genuinely love each other and cherish each other? because that last point alone is more than what half the ships in this fandom canonically have.
This isn't necessarily abt LSZ, byt it annoys me when ppl are like " you must forgive the ppl who wronged you in order to be a good person"
Bcs some were raised passive, some are used to letting go, and learning to love yourself enough to be angry abt what happened is a rlly important and powerful message
I won't argue abt canon, bcs i have fic for it, but, as healthy as it is, it's also frustrating. LSZ has never been shown as a particularly assertive person, and him being angry at what happened would have been satisfying and shown that he's learned the lesson of not tearing yourself down for other's comfort ( which is more WWX to learn than his tbh, but whateves)
JL, on the other hand, who's angry and assertive and doesn't listen to anyone, him choosing to forgive and forget ( WWX) feels more powerful narratively, bcs it's an active choice, not something that's been trained into him, he chose to let go of the anger before to be more happy
So yeah, I've seen a lot of arguments, but i think this is what boils down to. We want passive characters, those who stood and suffered to get angry and validated, because so few of us ever get the chance to
Except... here's the thing. LSZ didn't learn to "tear himself down for others' comfort". He's a peacemaker, yes, he tries to resolve fights, yes, but that's just because he's the sort of person who prefers peaceful resolutions. Come on, that kid was raised by LWJ. I don't doubt for a second he was spoiled rotten. I think people forget that someone preferring to be quiet and gentle isn't the same as being passive; LSZ doesn't assert himself because... well, he doesn't particularly want to. He lets LJY do it for him, most of the time. I have on multiple occasions seen people insisting there's something wrong with LSZ/WWX and LWJ's parenting because LSZ doesn't like to start fights over things that don't matter at the end of the day, and like... there's nothing wrong with being the type to forgive others and let things go, so long as it isn't taken into doormat territory. LSZ chooses to forgive the Lans for their part in his family's deaths, because the Lans a) played a pretty small part on balance and b) have raised and protected him with love and care his entire life when they didn't actually have to do that; I'd argue that's just as powerful as JL forgiving WWX. It's just quieter. And LSZ does assert himself; he's just quiet about it. He doesn't shout like JL does, but he doesn't let himself be ignored either! Remember, it's LSZ who keeps the juniors from making a huge thing about LWJ tying WWX up with the forehead ribbon; the fact that he did it with a smile on his face and without ever raising his voice doesn't make that not assertive! In fact he seems to be the leader of the multi-sect duckling contingent; they all listen to him, even JL at least some of the time (which is more than most people get). Assertiveness and aggression are not synonymous.
So I guess what I'm saying is... why is it that JL is seen as assertive when he shouts and cries but can never get people to do what he wants (he can't even get LJY to stop calling him 'young mistress'!), while LSZ is seen as passive when he actually does get people to do what he wants without ever raising his voice? Why are screaming, crying tantrums (I love JL but. they are tantrums) assertive while calmly taking control of the group and leading them down the path you've decided is passive? Why should LSZ have to scream his anger to the heavens for it to be real? He's not angry at LWJ and WWX, because why would he be? He's not angry (or at least not more angry than anything else) at the Lans, because they're the family that raised him well. Why does it follow that he's not angry at the people actually responsible, people he never talks to and so has no opportunity to openly tear down for causing his family's deaths? And remember, LSZ temporarily leaves the sect to travel with WN (which he as a disciple would've had to get permission to do, by the way; I'd argue that going to LQR and saying "Hey, I'm gonna fuck off to Qishan with my fierce corpse uncle to learn more about my birth family" counts as asserting yourself!); it's partly to learn about his birth family, but I don't doubt he also wanted time to think about things away from the Lans.
You say his "passivity" is something LSZ was trained into, but... come on, look at the Lans. These are the most stubborn assholes in all the sects. They wouldn't be teaching him to be passive, they'd be teaching him to keep his cool while verbally eviscerating his enemies. He was raised to be polite and to show his elders the deference due to their age and experience; that doesn't make him passive. The only time we see him being anything close to passive is when Madam Mo is hurling insults at him, and I'd say that's more "customer service" than any actual passivity. He's expected not to make demands of his elders (hence why he doesn't go off on JC beyond the bounds of "Hanguang-jun says"), but I say again: he's clearly the social leader of his group. He's not passive, he just follows the example of his uncle (who once got two men who hated each other to swear oaths of brotherhood to make him happy; it wasn't a wise move in the long run, but it's impressive he got as far as he did!) and gets what he wants through diplomacy, rather than being intimidating enough to force people to do what he wants.
I... don't actually know where I'm going with this. I guess I just get annoyed whenever people talk like there's something wrong with LSZ (usually something about him being too passive) when... he's probably one of the mentally healthiest characters in the whole cast! This boy was raised well among people who love and care for him and because of that he's doing really well! He doesn't yell and cry when things don't go his way like JL because he was raised in an environment where he was treated with respect as a person, and he forgives the Lans not because he's been raised to passively take whatever's done to him as deserved (like WWX) but because he loves them, because they earned that love by being good to him. Why should that be seen as passive just because he doesn't yell about it?
What keeps stumping me is this: LWJ takes WWX to the Cloud Recesses to protect him from JC, then, when they leave with the arm, he keeps dragging him back when WWX tries to escape to, again, protect him from JC... But then, after the Xinglu Ridge, he lets him go and trusts that WWX will meet him back at the inn. Why? And anyway, what was he planning to do, drag WWX around all his life? He had duties, he couldn't have followed WWX himself to provide protection, so it would have been exactly [1/2]
that — dragging him around or leaving him shielded behind the walls of the Cloud Recesses. In theory, if "MXY" became a Lan disciple, JC couldn't have touched him... But LWJ knew who "MXY" was and that WWX would mostly refuse, like he did multiple times before. It's great that after WWX realizes LWJ doesn't intend to harm or punish him, he goes along willingly — but what if he didn't? What then? JC was still out there, after all. [2/2]
Hi anon,
I think it's a little bit of a stretch to imagine LWJ's plan was to just keep 'dragging' WWX along forever. They arrived in the CR, spent one night there, and the next day LWJ was busy with the arm which was of course a priority. What would have happened if the Lans had been able to suppress the resentful energy of the arm on that day, and LWJ had not felt the responsibility to leave to solve the mystery? It's hard to say. But now that they were in a place that was safe, and that there wouldn't have been another matter that would have taken priority, I don't think it's far fetched to believe that LWJ would have discussed things with WWX or put into place a way to bring him to a safe place outside of the CR if he did not want to stay. Considering his grief over his mother, and her situation, as well as his care for WWX’s welfare, I’m wary to believe his gameplan could ever be just ‘guess I’ll keep WWX in the CR, even if against his will, forever, bc jc is out there’.
I think it's important as well to remember that regardless of LWJ's motives, WWX does not choose to remain with him because of the protection LWJ can provide him, or simply because he suddenly decided to trust him out of a single demonstration of trustworthiness.
Even before they left the CR, WWX's words and actions revealed he was attached to and protective of LWJ--even as a crisis is occurring, his thoughts keep going back to LWJ, and whether he is okay:
When the bell of the watchtower started ringing on its own, it only meant one thing—that an accident happened to the people performing the summoning ritual inside. [...]
Seeing that Lan Wangji did not appear, Wei Wuxian had a foreboding feeling. If Lan Wangji were still in the Cloud Recesses, he would have hurried over immediately, as he heard the alarming chimes of the bell, unless…
Suddenly, the black door burst open with a bang. A white-clothed disciple rushed outside, staggering and stumbling.
[...]
Wei Wuxian grabbed his hand at once, speaking in a low voice, “Which being’s spirit are you summoning? Who else is inside? Where’s Hanguang-jun?!”
It seemed as if the disciple had trouble breathing, “Hanguang-jun told me to run away…”
[...]With the hastily created bamboo flute still by his waist, he went up the stairs in just a few strides. He kicked the door of the mingshi and commanded, “Open!”
WWX is the one who offers to go with LWJ, but of course we know it was because he thought it would be an opportunity to get away.
The few nodded, “Okay! Are you going to travel down the mountain?”
Lan Wangji gave a slight nod. Wei Wuxian had already stealthily shifted behind him, talking to himself in a loud, cheerful way, “Yes, yes, yes, we can finally get off this mountain and elope together!”
[...] Wei Wuxian originally wanted to sneak away during their expedition off the mountain. However, even though he attempted to run away multiple times, it always ended with Lan Wangji carrying him back with one hand holding the back of his collar. He changed his strategy, sticking to Lan Wangji as hard as he could. At night, especially, he would persistently climb into Lan Wangji’s bed, with the intention that Lan Wangji would become disgusted and use his sword to throw him away. Despite this, no matter how hard he messed around, Lan Wangji steadily stood his ground. Whenever Wei Wuxian wriggled into his blankets, he would use a light slap to make Wei Wuxian’s body rigid, and then stuff him into the other set of blankets in a proper position, where he would remain until daylight broke. Wei Wuxian suffered a ton of losses and complaint about his sore body after he woke up. He could not help but think: Now that he grew up, he also became less fun than before. In the past, he would become shy whenever he was teased, not to mention that he did it in quite an amusing way. But now, not only does he remain unmovable no matter what, he even learned how to counterattack. How can this be?!
However, in the same chapter, as they have spent more time together, WWX starts hating the idea of being separated from LWJ, although he cannot yet put into words why he feels this way:
After walking for some distance, Wei Wuxian unintentionally turned around and looked. Lan Wangji was behind him, still standing at the same place, staring toward his direction.
Wei Wuxian could not help but slow his footsteps.
He could not tell why, but he vaguely felt that he should not walk so fast, should not be leaving Lan Wangji behind like this.
We can also to a degree concur that WWX already feels safe enough around LWJ to seek him as a source of safety and comfort when faced with a dog, which happens a lot during the Xinglu Ridge arc, to the point that he unconsciously calls for him when JC sics Fairy on him while LWJ is away. WWX is also protective of LWJ in his own way even at that point:
Wei Wuxian immediately understood whose name he had unconsciously called out.
“It really is quite curious how far he went to protect you,” Jiang Cheng smiled menacingly, “back on Dafan Mountain.”
A moment later, he corrected himself, “No. You weren’t necessarily the one whom Lan Wangji was protecting. After all, the GusuLan Sect couldn’t have forgotten what you did with that loyal dog of yours. How could someone so celebrated for his righteousness tolerate the likes of you? Maybe he’s familiar with this body that you stole instead.”
His words were cruel and sinister. Every sentence seemed well-meaning on the surface, but was actually derogatory. Wei Wuxian could not bear with it any longer.
“Watch your language.”
“I’ve never cared for such things, don’t you remember?” Jiang Cheng responded,
“Oh, right.” Wei Wuxian mocked.
Although WWX tells LWJ that he would meet him back after they separated, he could have easily chosen not to do it. After all, compared to all the tricks he tried to flee before, it would have been nothing to go back on this 'promise'. He was in a forest, at night, where no one but JL knew he was. He could have left at any time. And when LWJ left, he knew this--that WWX would potentially not come back, hence why his expression is so shaken after having waited hours for WWX to return (now we can wonder how long he would have stayed on that bridge, waiting, hoping). But, again, solving the mystery of the arm took priority over ensuring WWX's safety (and, considering WWX managed to be discovered and taken by JC during these few hours, it's not like his fears were unfounded).
While WWX seems to realise that LWJ is on his side, there is no big moment of thinking "he doesn't want to punish/harm me". Likewise, there is no considerations of how JC could be looking for him after his escape and the dangers inherent in that. It seems almost like another unconscious decision.
He had always thought that Jiang Cheng would be on his side, and Lan Wangji on the side opposite to him. He could never have imagined that things would turn out so differently.
Wei Wuxian walked toward the rendezvous point where he and Lan Wangji were supposed to meet. Nobody walked among the sparse lights that flickered in the night. Without having to look around, a white-robed figure stood at the end of the street, standing motionless with his head hung low.
In conclusion, WWX would have never stayed alongside LWJ (or anyone else for that matter) simply for protection. As well, it is extremely unlikely that LWJ's thought process at this point of the narrative was 'I'll just drag WWX along for the rest of our lives''--but that the arm took priority over resolving the conundrum around WWX's safety, and that indeed, when the situation presented itself, he put first what I'll call his night hunting duties for a lack of a better term while taking the risk that WWX would decide to leave on his own. Is it the most 'healthy' way of approaching the situation? Honestly, I don't care. Instead I think it’s much more important to wonder: is it coherent with the characterisation, the characters' motivations and the unfolding of the plot?
Tumblr wasn’t letting me send more asks, sorry. This is a bit of a vent, but it’s kinda angsty so there. I’m sick and tired of people feeling sorry for LXC, and having NHS grovel or something bc LXC hurt and upset, I understand that up to a point LXC is a victim of JGY manipulations too, but just for that everyone let’s him off the hook for the shitty choices and actions (not to mention the double standards). So let’s have a world where LXC actually faced repercussions for his actions (bc let’s be real, seclusion is not really a punishment, getting to shut out the world -throwing all his responsibilities on his little brother and uncle- and live in a comfy place where he is still viewed as a can-do-no-wrong entity by everyone and being able to handle his grief and thoughts in peace is way more and way better than most characters got). Let’s say that JGY didn’t die at Guanyin Temple, and LXC gets him to CRSS like he wanted, do you think NHS would be alright with that? With JGY not only alive and well, but protected by LXC? He worked too hard not to get justice for dage, and what’s more, LXC is helping his killer. Before he didn’t trust LXC with the info about JGY, but he still had the benefit of the doubt. Now, after LXC has all the information he needs to know what a horrible human being JGY is, and still chooses to protect him, now he knows where LXC stands, and if taking JGY down means LXC goes down with him, that’s more than fine with him. Getting the truth of what happened in Guanyin Temple, and JGY many crimes is child’s play to NHS. People are outraged, they sympathise with poor Jin Ling, deceived and almost killed by JGY. (There is no need to make it harder on JL than it already is, and NHS isn’t going to go out of his way to hurt anyone but JGY) After stirring the pot, is only a matter of a few sightings of Meng Yao, -now officially removed as sect leader and struck from the family records (by pressure of the Jin elders, or however you like)- in CRSS for the other sects to demand JGY be brought to justice. LXC tries to reason with the other sect leaders, calling for mercy or lesser punishments -even if they had been willing to listen, NHS did a great job with stirring up the masses with actual proof- it doesn’t work. JGY dies, publicly and shamefully. Except it doesn’t stop there. People start talking about how Zewu Jun defended a monster like JGY, he not only looses face before the other sects, but in his own sect too. The juniors don’t look at him the same way anymore, LSZ won’t look at him in the eye anymore, the elders question his judgement. Even LWJ is conflicted. NHS hates him, he knows. He’s no longer trusted. And he has no one to blame but himself. Soon enough he is encouraged to step down as Sect Leader. Besides his grudge against JC, LWJ does a very good job as sect leader, people listen to him, he is Hanguang Jun and he lives up to that reputation. He gets to watch his brother be happy with WWX and the juniors and know that if he had trusted LWJ -his brother, someone he’s known his whole life- over JGY, most of the terrible things that happened wouldn’t have happened. (Maybe LWJ could have raised LSZ with WWX, he wouldn’t have been whipped, maybe he wouldn’t have mourned, maybe NMJ would still be alive, maybe the Wens would still be alive, maybe maybe maybe) If he had listened to NMJ, if he had listened to LWJ, if if if. In the end he made his choices, and despite all the warning signs he chose to trust JGY, and he had to live with that. (That last part got away from me a bit, I think that might be LXC thought process)
