*Hamas* , the Arabic acronym for the Islamic Resistance Movement ( _Harakah Muqawwamah al-Islamiyah_ ), is the Palestinian organisation governing the Gaza Strip. *In 2006* , in the general elections considered by many foreign observers to be the freest and most fair ever to be held in the region, Hamas won the most number of seats in the *Palestinian National Assembly (PNA)* . Its military wing, the *Izzaddin Al-Qasam Brigade* , is the biggest Palestinian groups engaged in armed resistance against Israeli occupation and the series of attacks by Israel on the Gaza Strip since 2006; the latest being in *May 2021* . The US, Israel and their supporters in the West consider Hamas a terrorist organisation while others, noting the context of Hamas’s armed responses, consider them as freedom fighters. Our speakers in this webinar will share their thoughts, perspectives and insights on the very topical question of whether Hamas is an organisation of terrorists or freedom fighters. The speakers are: 1. *Prof. Dr Chan Chee Khoon* is a health policy analyst and the co-founder of Citizens’ Health Initiative. He has served as consultant to the World Bank, European Commission, WHO and various UN agencies. He is also a keen observer of the Palestine-Israel issue. 2. *Dr. Roland Loh* , a Malaysian currently based in London. BDS Malaysia Webinar: *Is Israel a Jewish State or an Apartheid State?* Date: 22 August 2021 Time: 2 pm – 3.30 pm (KL Time) Panelists: *Dr. Peter Slezak* (Independent Australian Jewish Voices) *Prof Saul Takahashi* (Professor of Human Rights and Peace Studies at Osaka Jogakuin University) Moderator: *Ms. Azra Banu* BDS Malaysia and Viva Palestina Malaysia Zionism’s declared objective of establishing a national home for the Jewish people was achieved militarily and politically when Israel was formed in 1948. Yet more than seven decades later, the Zionist project arguably is a failure since its raison d’etre remains unfulfilled: the majority of the world’s Jews still choose to live outside Israel – a fact western mainstream media neither highlights nor questions deeply. In July 2018, Israel passed the Nation-State Law which specifies the nature of the state as the nation-state of the Jewish people and the right to self-determination in the country would be unique to the Jewish people. The law’s opponents say that it provides legal sanction and reduces the status of non-Jewish minorities to that of second-class citizens while its proponents claim Israel is still a fully democratic country that does not violate the rights of its minorities. Against that development, two international bodies, the UN Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA) in March 2017 and Human Rights Watch in April 2021 and an Israeli human rights organisation, B’Tselem in January 2021 have all declared that Israel practices apartheid against non-Jews in all the territories it controls. July 3rd marks a year since the launch of the Global South Response- a statement endorsed by 10 ex-Presidents, over 700 MPs and leading civil society figures, calling for a UN investigation into Israel's apartheid and sanctions. Since then, this has transformed into a civil society effort mobilizing on these demands across Asia, Africa and Latin America. Last months have seen escalated colonial violence by Israel, in Gaza as well as in East Jerusalem neighbourhoods of Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah and Lifta. Against this, Palestinians have united in protests across historic Palestine. To build concrete solidarity with Palestinians and against Israel's apartheid, we thought this discussion could focus on different aspects of mobilization- parliamentary, UN level, academic and cultural as well as grassroots. Israel as Apartheid state: What now? In July 2020, the Israeli human rights organisation Yesh Din, published a legal report _The Occupation of the West Bank and the Crime of Apartheid: Legal Opinion_. In January 2021, another Israeli human rights group B’Tselem published a position paper entitled _A regime of Jewish supremacy from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea: This is apartheid_. This was followed by yet another publication _A Threshold Crossed: Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution_ by Human Rights Watch three months later. These developments are significant albeit belated acknowledgements of what Palestinian intellectuals and rights groups have long been articulating on behalf of the Palestinian resistance. What are the legal (and political) implications, of an official designation of _apartheid_? In 1973, the UN declared that acts of _apartheid_ constituted a *crime under international law*, through the Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid. In 2002, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court designated the crime of _apartheid_ as a “*crime against humanity*”, understood as comprising “_inhumane acts … committed in the context of an institutionalised regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group_”. United in Struggle for a Democratic Non-apartheid One State? Aroused by the recent Sheikh Jarrah expulsions, Gazans living in Hamas-controlled areas, Palestinians living under the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in West Bank and East Jerusalem, and Palestinians with Israeli citizenship living in the Green Line areas have revolted against the Zionist state in a dramatic upsurge and show of unity from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean.
