Actually I will say this in regards to Beard, Wembley, and James Tartt Sr
I think Beard After Hours really shows how much the tone of Ted Lasso is seen through framing lens of Ted himself. Even if Ted says the story wasn’t really about him, the thematic weight of the show is absolutely about Ted. And Beard After Hours may be a crazy hallucinatory version in its self, but it’s still basically our only glance into this world when it’s not actively being Ted’s World.
And i think it being Ted’s World is why at Wembley, we only see the implication of violence. It’s always been the undercurrent when Jamie tells people about his dad - that he pushed him to dominate, that he’s a dick - but in that locker room scene? Man. Despite the show avoiding using the word ‘abuse’, everything from the acting to the staging to the dialogue fucking SCREAMS the impending threat of immediate violence from the top of the scene onwards.
I don’t think I have ever seen anyone disagree on the reading of that scene. The way Jamie tells him ‘don’t talk to me like that’ — we all agree that that’s something he learned from Dr Sharon. We are all in agreement, after watching him punch his dad, that it was the first time he’s ever fought back. And we all believe it, that when James got up saying ‘you can have that one for free’ that the threat was immediate and very real.
But before it can reach that point it’s cut off. Beard pulls James away. It’s a tense, hard scene to watch, but the actual violence shown is very minimal.
And then we get to Beard After Hours, where James has followed Beard out of Ted’s world, and we see the actual violence that just as easily could’ve taken place, and likely has before, in a world where Ted Lasso was not the lens with which we viewed things.

Thank God we had “Beard After Hours” last season. Getting a glimpse of the shenanigans Beard gets up to when left unsupervised made him rolling back up at the end of the episode as Piggy Stardust so much more hilarious.

I've rewatched Ted Lasso several times, but I almost always skipped the Beard After Hours episode. I finally went and rewatched it, and it is actually. soo. good.
And it is also so...sad?
I want to see some of its aspects addressed in S3. For two people who moved to a different country together and seem to know everything about each other, Ted and Beard do not show each other their vulnerable sides at all. I want them to talk about their insecurities and issues. And I really hope the Jane situation is not continued to be played off for laughs or is just a silly side story because our Coach deserves so much better.

Sunflowers feels like a sequel to Beard After Hours. It doesn’t have the original’s quirky weirdness* but I love how we the audience are witness to many characters’ search for the sun. (See what I did there …haha)
I think it’s one of my favorite episodes.
“(I spoke too soon, Coach Beard did bring the needed weirdness to the proceedings lmao)

I think for understanding how jamie grew up seeing James in beard after hours is way more significant that James in the locker room scene. In the locker room we see him act like a dick and get violent a bit with his son. In beard after hours we see James how he is when he's with his friends, in an environment that's less 'protected' than a crowded locker room, and he's straight up terrifying. The pipe, "good night son" the way he gave chase when beard ran. Terrifying guy. And that's what jamie had to deal with as a little kid? Damn.
Yes, Absolutely! This isn't only a 'domsetic violence' situation. James surrounds himself with violence. It's not 'episodic' outbursts and Bug and Denbo are complicit in this behaviour.
That must have been terrifying for a child Jamie and a Jamie now.

Beard pulling James Tartt out of the room.
Beard telling Ted earlier, “I’m going to walk it off” after Wembley. He follows a crowd as they sign Blue Moon. Stares down an equally solemn looking child on a bus until the child's mother pulls him away. The blue moon hovers behind him. His waywardness as he debates whether or not to seek out Jane. How he needs to know she loves him back. The blue moon's hanging from the wall outside Bones & Honey. How Beard self-aggrandizes, pretending to be a retired Oxford professor. How he fills his fake-life up the way he fills up conversation: with philosophy and poetry. He references Fight Club and talks about reality being a simulation but then still follows the woman in the red dress (Matrix) and his entire conversation with her reads like something from a movie. The blue moon hovers over them.
Threatened, he runs from another man and there's a satellite behind him on the roof. He jumps. He thinks he escaped. The blue moon hovers above him.
How he walks into the light thinking his life is about to be saved. It's not a light. It's James Tartt. The blue moon's come to find him again.
"Is that love or do I just have a problem?" "Why can't it be both?"
"Part of me thinks Beard really wanted to get beat up tonight."
"Clearly he'd rather punish himself than accept the love and support of the people around him."
"I'm beginning to think Coach Beard hates himself."
He keeps losing his keys (his home). His wallet (his identity).
"And I am under no illusions that she could solve what ails me. But when I'm with her, the world just feels… more interesting."
He finds Jane. He tries to trade in the blue moon for a pink cross and when he finds her, she's holding a circle. A hula hoop that she slides over his head.
More interesting than the blue moon, but it's still a circle. He's traded in something that hovers over him for something he can hold.

(Fair warning, having some less-than-friendly thoughts towards Ted on my latest rewatch.)
I know we all love "Beard After Hours" (/s) but like. Primary episode that isn't filtered by the Ted-colored-glasses, right?
And Jamie's dad is there. Willing to kill (or at least maim) Beard. But there's no indication Ted ever learns about that. (I mean I certainly hope "forgive an attempted murderer" wasn't his intention, although his "forgive the guy I have personally seen verbally abuse you and at least threaten to physically harm you" isn't exactly great.)
But like. Why would Beard not tell Ted about it. They have a close relationship. Ted seems to know all about the other dangers to Beard's person since they met. It certainly would've affected the team if James had gotten a hit in. It does indicate a more serious problem for a member of the team.
Did so much happen that night that Beard just... didn't think to share?
Was he still angry at Ted and didn't think to share?
Did he want to protect Ted from that information (given the panic attack, Ted's issues with his own dad, etc. etc.)?
Or did he just think Ted wouldn't give a shit?
