I would like to know mroe about that beaststars tadc au please

The basic set up is that they all go to college in varying years

1st year — Jax, zooble

2nd year — gangle, pomni, bubble

3rd year — ragatha

It’s kind of zooble and pomni centric at first with zooble sharing a dorm with her after pomnis last roommate went missing (they were a herbivore). They’re also forced to be around each other almost all schoolday because of zooble being a hybrid and other factors making the school force them to have a 'guardian' (they’re trying to seem progressive and don’t want to get any bad rep), so basically forcing pomni to be a caretaker for a person who doesn’t want or need one.

They are not happy and cannot stand each other at first

The cast meet each other by having all joined a new circus club by Caine, that outside of customes has almost nothing to do with circuses lol, it’s more of an theater club but clowns. Like in the show he comes up with acts and/or adventures for them to do, where his intentions are to teach teamwork or whatever excuse he came up with to create it. The crew mostly joined because they get free stuff from it.

The story is undercooked still, because at first I loved the worldbuilding in beastars and just thought the craziness of it was fitting for tadc. I do have characteristics and dynamics in my head, like pomni having trouble with taking control of her carnivorous instincts while ragatha doesn’t have any herbivorous instincts at all, or Jax and zooble being frenemies who somehow almost always find each other in the same place and have matching pendants (zooble around their neck and Jax on his ear)

Kinger is probably a teacher, I’d imagine that he would teach something related to bugs. I also have some ideas for the abstracted, but you’ll just have to wait to find out if I flesh it out bc I think this is long enough already haha. This au will definitely include some beastars craziness, don’t worry.

Lastly I’m just gonna make a list of the character species:

–pomni: cat, long–haired Scottish fold, but shaves fur short

–Jax: European hare + Flemish giant rabbit hybrid, the latter of which is mostly just the height

–Ragatha: Dorset horn sheep

–Gangle: Malay weasel

–Zooble: Hybrid, dog + bird + deer (don’t rlly have any specific species)

–Kinger: lion

– Kaufmo: also a cat

–bubble: Thresher shark (Ik in context this doesn’t make sense, but it’s my au so I’m gonna have fun with it)

– Caine: genuinely have no idea, I need suggestions please

So yea, I hope this gives more insight! This au also dips a little into ships, which hopefully people won’t mind.

A Beast complex chapter that deals with mortality? What a surprise!

But seriously, this chapter was very sweet... and odd.

Meet Sage the snake.

Sage is a nurse. That can be problematic since most animals don’t like those very much, something that we have seen before in both Beastars and Beast Complex. Makes sense since they are much different from all the other animals in this world, they actually look the most like real world animals. And the fact that they are often naked makes others even more weirded out by them.

But like a good nurse, Sage takes complaints and yelling on the chin. His calmness comes extra handy when he goes to help an old mouse.

While on the nightshift, Sage stops by Nectar the Mouse’s room. Nectar is around 50 years old, but being a rodent means that he age faster than most animals, meaning his 50s is larger animals’ 90s. Nectar yells at Sage to get out after falling to the floor. Sage naturally assume the old mouse is scared of him, but the poor guy accidentally wet his bed since he he couldn’t reach the bathroom in time. Nectar is ashamed and is acting like a child, insisting to be left alone.

Wanting to make Nectar calm down and be less embarrassed, Sage has an... unusual way to deal with the situation.

Yep. He is flashing hi third leg at Nectar.

... Or in Sage’s case I guess it is his first and second leg.

Just to be sure you understand, I’m talking about his junk. His joysticks. His tallywackers. His Dick Tracys. I suppose you could call them his snakes :P

Sorry, I will be an adult now. And the reason for Sage to show Nectar his knick knacks is actually rather sweet.

Sage argues that since he is a snake, he is a shameless and emotional creature. That is naturally a stereotype others have about snakes, but Sage is using it to his advantage to make Nectar calm down, arguing that since he is such a cold fish(can I use that expression in Beastverse context?) who can casually reveal his cucumbers then there is no reason to get worked up and be embarrassed. 

Sage calmly change Nectar’s bedsheet despite the old rodent keep yelling at him to stop it. Nectar slowly calms down as he grows curious and have to ask Sage about his privates. He is surprised to see that snakes truly have two. The two of them have a laugh about their unusual tools since mice... well, lets just say that their sausages aren’t bone-free.

Having gotten less awkward about his sucky situation, Nectar doesn’t protest as Sage helps him change to clean clothes and even carry him to bed. Heck, Nectar even asks for an unusual favor.

Sage gets an earful.. ah, wait... Sage get yelled at by the head nurse of the hospital for having slept with a patient.

NO, NOT LIKE THAT! 

The issue is not that it is inappropriate or that sage was sleeping on duty. No, the problem is that sharing bed with a snake is said to bring bad luck. It is just one more thing that makes snakes feel like outsiders in the Beastverse that they are somehow often mention in superstition and urban legends.

Say, that reminds me in an earlier chapter we see a snake as a priest.

Unusual if you consider them being associated with bad omens. But then again, perhaps this snake got involved with spiritualism. Just saying.

Anyways, back to Sage and Nectar.

Sage has taken a special interest in Nectar as a patient since the old mouse is not just suffering from his age, he also have cancer. It affects his limbs and it will soon spread to his brain. So despite the head nurse scolding him for doing it once, Sage agrees to hold Nectar to help him fall asleep.

But we soon learn that it is not a bunch of hocus pocus that sleeping with snakes is a bad idea.

In his sleep, Sage starts squeezing Nectar, as if he is trying to kill him.

We learn from two nurses discussing Sage that snakes twist and turn in their sleep and one of the nurses who is a Komodo dragon tells his colleague that he was almost strangled to death by a snake he dated for two months when they slept together.

Honestly, I find this interesting, the idea of an animal dating one who is so much different than them. Sure, lizards and snakes may have some traits in common, but that that a limbless creature could be attracted to one with arms and legs(and the other way around) could honestly be a whole different chapter of Beast Complex.

Anyways...

Sage wakes up in time to stop himself from squeezing Nectar to death, horrified by what he almost did. But Nectar was aware of snakes and the way they sleep. The old mouse, like so many other animals in Beastverse, is suicidal.

Nectar claims he has come to terms with the fact that he, even if he should get better, will most likely die rather soon since he is old and frail.

That’s why Nectar found it comforting to sleep with Sage wrapped around him. Like he was being escorted to the afterlife by a kind friend.

Sage, moved by the fucked-upness of the situation, starts squirming and stretching. Nectar thinks for a second that the snake nurse is trying to strangle him... but he instead is given a gift.

See, even though snakes are normally associated with bad luck, there is an exception that proves the rule.

Snake skins are sometimes given to patients at hospitals to be placed underneath pillows. They symbolizes rebirth and works as good-luck charms for very sick people. Nectar is deeply moved by the gift and that Sage would force-shed for his sake. Nectar learns from his new nurse that Sage has been told to leave the hospital for unacceptable behavior.

... To be fair, I would probably have Sage fired even if I could appreciate the sentiment.

Nectar comes to the conclusion that he has no choice. If Sage no longer works at the hospital, the old mouse simply have to get better so that he can go visit the kind snake himself.

This was such a lovely story. Once again, it addresses what it means to die, that we can either just accept the sweet release of death... or keep fighting to live despite life being short and cruel, even more so if you are a rodent who age roughly twice as fast as a medium-sized animal.

We also learned that the best way to create trust is by showing someone your John Thomas. In fact, you should try it! Go to a stranger and show the

What if in Beastars, after Emporio beats Pucci, Pucci only manages to scratch him before he dies, thus Emporio gets turned into a Werebeast himself, makes angst potential, i imagine a lion eagle hybrid, more lion like but with wings but also some ram horns as a reminder of Weather, he’s basically a bird kitten. Maybe he becomes protective of Irene and the others.

Made better if Irene and Jotaro are still Werebeasts in the new world, maybe some werebeast cuddles.

Now, I will say I do want to change some aspects of the animals you've assigned Emporio, if only to stop too much over lap. The ram works fine because of the implications of it, but I believe Jonathan is already part lion and Josuke is already a griffin of sorts

maybe we could try tying Emporio to the three werebeasts he interacts with? So a ram for Weather and Pucci, either a wolf or gator from Jotaro (I'm not sure which since one would give him SUPER fluffs but the other would let him swim better), and butterfly wings from Jolyne

and just. Imagine the day they find Emporio at the bus stop eith a somewhat brutal looking and very fresh slash on his arm. It's only natural that they'd all be concerned, especially when Emporio only explains it as far as "I was attacked by an animal" without any more context

and just. Who knows how it goes for him. Maybe it starts as little things while still a human that he always writes off as because of his newfound freedom. He enjoys meat more than he did before? Well, of course he does, meat had been a luxury he rarely got and now he gets to pick what to eat. He likes climbing trees and being in the open air? It's a good vantage point and he's never been able to climb trees before. He feels more comfortable with his blankets and pillows piled up in a nest? Probably for safety and as a trauma response, he remembered reading some books about it

but of course, everything comes to head that first full moon he spends with the Joestars

The plan had been for Jotaro and Jolyne to leave the house while Marina stayed with Emporio. They wanted to slowly ease him into it, and full moon nights would be akin to throwing him straight into the deep end. Of course, Emporio already knows what they are, but he doesn't say anything and plays dumb for their benefit

and Marina was ready for a calm, quiet night. It had been some time since her husband and daughter had spent the entire night away, but she understood why and was happy to help

what she was not ready for was for Emporio to start screaming the second the sun set

can you imagine how terrifying this would be for both parties? Emporio because what's happening what's going on why does everything hurt why is his body change like this it hurts it hurts it hurts- and Marina is freaking out because Yeah An Eleven Year Old Screaming In Your Living Room Is Going To Make You Panic

what's even more....... Marina's never seen this kind of reaction before. Jotaro and Jolyne always shifted with confidence, with certainty, with control. They always knew exactly what they were doing and what was going to happen

but this? This could not be further from that

it also doesn't help that Emporio's panic doesn't really leave even after the shift is done. Now it's just less coherent and more erratic which is fun for Marina to deal with

her one saving grace is that Emporio is still relatively small and thus doesn't actually try to hurt her. He more or less runs around for about an hour before hiding himself under a piece of furniture, at which Marina starts slowly making it clear she isn't a threat. Near the end of the night he actually falls asleep in his hiding spot and Marina has to fish him out so he won't hurt himself when he changes back

but yeah, Jotaro and Jolyne are in for the realization of a lifetime by the time they get back

Some more context about the hybrid world. Besides the general dichotomy of ABO, there's also a smaller dichotomy of Predator and Prey animals. One isn't really seen as superior to the other because they A) don't eat each other and B) This isn't Beastars

However, Prey don't typically join the military, predators aren't usually like medical personnel.

So, for Rudy to be in the military as both a prey and an omega hybrid is... not unheard of, but he definitely gets a few double takes

Some question if he's a jack rabbit, but no, he's just a rabbit

It's rumored that Ghost is slightly feral, but he's actually a lot more tame than a lot of his fellow soldiers. Even Soap, who's considered domestic.

They really don't get along at first because Rodolfo sees big predator alpha and assumes Ghost is going to treat him like small innocent prey

Ghost does get a small kick out of riling Rodolfo up. It's super easy and Rodolfo gives into it, easy

Rodolfo learns how to rile Ghost up, back, though, which is not good for anyone's blood pressure.

Price and Alejandro have had to break up a few arguments

Ghost definitely knows Rudy is capable, though. He's watched Rodolfo just plow through attackers.

Currently (re)reading: Shakespeare's Twelfth Night! i have my old copy from highschool open next to me and the 2012 shakespeare's globe production up and i just sit and sift between watching and reading and analysing it, just like when i first learned it in class. i'm not really sure why i wanted to reread it again in the first place, but i find it kind of soothing to read older texts where the language and culture's a little ways off from its modern successors. i find it calming to kind of pull those stories back in a way we can understand with its old contexts and writing, and see more and more of that timeless human experience shine through. sudoku for english nerds i guess LOL

6. Currently watching: my watcher's stamina has actually gotten so shit im ngl like i actually haven't watched a show in months 😭😭😭 the last show i watched was bluey (which was pretty good! (and pretty indicative of the kind of attention span ive got these days 😂👌))

Currently consuming: this horrible like nutraloaf nightmare bowl i made because my appetite was really poor today and at 5 pm or so i was like ugh well id better eat something quick and dense if im not gonna have a proper meal so i insulted God and put together reheated smashed potato (in the microwave so they lost all their crunch and flavour) + dried roasted edamame beans + peanut butter + regular butter + cheddar + yoghurt + whole salted almonds in a bowl and had a slice of walnut fig cake as a side. that thing needed a censor bar like i was in the trenches trying to get that down im ngl. eating that meal took more energy out of me than what it gave back like i knew i made something unholy and then immediately paid for it like it was so frankenstein and his monster right there on that kitchen counter

I know Beastars came out a while ago and it's not really in the zeitgeist, but fuck it. I have some thoughts about Mizuchi Beastars and I'm typing them out.

This bitch.

If you know who this character is, then you too are aware that she's a bitch, but there's some real-world context that adds another layer to her bitchiness. To be clear, I don't think the author of Beastars was aware of this context when writing it, but fuck it, it's a new lens for viewing the character.

Mizuchi is an endangered(?) Harlequin rabbit, whose boyfriend is another Harlequin rabbit. Her boyfriend has sex with Haru at some point, and that's why Mizuchi bullies Haru. (in Haru's defense, it seems like the boyfriend was the one who initiated, and it's not indicated whether or not she was aware he was taken.) But Mizuchi makes a very, VERY big deal out of the fact that she's a rare Harlequin rabbit and How Very Dare You Threaten The Continuation Of Our Race You Hussy.

However, there's a bit of real-world context to harlequin rabbits that adds another layer to Mizuchi's behavior. Harlequin rabbits are indeed a real thing, and they are relatively rare, but they're not endangered.

In fact, I don't think they even can be considered endangered, because Harlequin rabbits aren't a species. They're a domestic breed.

Harlequin rabbits being rare isn't the same situation as, say, giant pandas or whooping cranes being rare. Even if they are uncommon, so long as there are rabbit fanciers who are interested in breeding them, they're not going to go extinct. And they are the same species as every other domestic rabbit in the world, just with a different pattern.

But, okay, Mizuchi and her boyfriend aren't regular IRL pet rabbits who could be bred to create more show-quality Harlequin rabbits. They're Beastars rabbits with human-like bodies and human-level intelligence who choose their own partners and don't necessarily have human owners who will make sure there are more Harlequins in the future. Okay then. Maybe they could actually go extinct in Beastars world.

So, next question: based on Harlequins being an uncommon domestic rabbit breed, what are the implications of their potential extinction?

Answer: not much of anything.

Again, they're a breed and not a species. They're just domestic rabbits with a uncommon coat pattern. There are no ecological implications to whether or not Harlequin rabbits are a thing. If they did go extinct, it would probably just take a few generations of selective breeding to bring them back.

What happens if giant pandas go extinct? Giant pandas can never exist again, and their absence would cause a domino effect with other species that share their habitat.

What would happen if Harlequin rabbits go extinct? Rabbit fanciers would be sad about it.

So if we apply this bit of real world context to Mizuchi and her boyfriend, she looks like an even bigger bitch than before.

Mizuchi and her man don't even really seem to like each other, but they're together because they're the same type of uncommon rabbit and according to Mizuchi, they MUST be together for the continuation of the noble Harlequin Master Race.

What do you want to bet she holds that over his head every time they have a slight disagreement? What does she even bring to the relationship, other than the fact that she's rare?

tl;dr Mizuchi, shut the ever loving fuck up about being endangered. You are not a giant panda, you are not a whooping crane, you are not a bottlenose dolphin. You are a regular-ass domestic rabbit with a slightly unusual coat pattern, so stop fucking milking your "rareness" for sympathy and status every time you have a disagreement with someone. You hear me, Mizuchi? You will never be a goddamn panda.

Animation Night 152: Shinji Aramaki

Hi everyone! Welcome back to Animation Night! Tonight I'm running late as ever, but I have a curiosity to present to you!

CG in anime is generally speaking a dirty word. Something to be tolerated, or begrudgingly acknowledge it wasn't bad. Exceptional studios such as Orange (of Houseki no Kuni [AN97], Beastars and most recently Trigun Stampede) may escape the stigma by cleverly integrating 2D layouts, but they're surrounded by a wasteland of CG (often on Netflix) that is mechanical, awkward and just unappealing.

The style of CG in anime also tends to be designed towards imitating, or integrating with, traditional animation. Cel-shading is the order of the day, established all the way back in GitS:SAC with its tachikomas and helicopters. And generally speaking, that's a good approach! When it's not followed, as in the case of Psycho-Pass season 3, the results often look very jarring.

But there are exceptions to every rule!

We covered one of them back on Animation Night 85, with the bizarre Square-Enix project Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, which tried to apply the then-very new technique of motion capture to create something like a movie-length videogame cutscene. And this is the start of another strain of Japanese animation (perhaps not anime! depending on whether you define anime in a geographical or technical way) - the feature-length CG animated film.

Let's start with Shinji Aramaki, who has spent decades trying to bring anime fans around to the idea of CGI. Aramaki got his start back in the 80s, doing mechanical design on OVAs like Megazone 23 and Bubblegum Crisis. He debuted as a director with Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 (1987), and in 1989, he became the third director of the constantly-reinventing-itself Megazone 23, following on from Ishiguro and Hirano (AN103) on Part I, and Itano and Umetsu on Part II. So, an old hand at the past way of doing things.

In the 2000s, Aramaki returned to direction jumped on CGI, directing early CG animated films such as Appleseed (2004) in cel-shaded style, following Gainax in adapting the dense Masamune Shirow manga, and its sequel Appleseed Ex Machina in 2007 which started moving the stylisation away from cel-shading. In this time, full-CG movies were still very new; Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children dropped only in 2005. Aramaki continued to drill into full-CG with a mecha series Viper's Creed and a Starship Troopers sequel film. From that you can probably get a sense of his taste: he likes mecha!

The results received mixed reviews, as often about the technology as the movies themselves. The first Appleseed inspired Toshio Suzkui of Studio Ghibli to declare it would revolutionise animation, which doesn't seem to have been entirely borne out.

Still, when Toei decided to do a new CG adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's renowned Space Pirate Captain Harlock (Animation Night 146), famously first taken on by Rintaro, I suppose Aramaki must have seemed a natural choice. If Appleseed had been made on the cheap, Harlock was the opposite, costing 3 billion yen as the most expensive Japanese CG film (and maybe animated film?) evaaaa, surpassing CG-heavy megaprojects like Eva 3.0+1.0, Otomo's Steamboy and In This Corner of the World. Toei clearly had big ambitions for the return of Harlock.

So. The style of this Harlock resembles more closely videogame cutscenes, or the films of Square Enix's Visual Works, than Aramaki's past films: realistic materials and lighting, only mildly stylised character designs. In contrast to the 'aliens everywhere' maximalism of the original Leijiverse, this film puts a more antiheroic Harlock in conflict with a human government, in the context of space colonists attempting to resettle Earth and fighting a big old war over it. Which isn't to say there's a shortage of alien superweapons, dark matter, and plans to reset the entire universe. It sounds pretty wild.

Following Harlock, Aramaki would continue to direct CG, including a cool take on an Eva launching for a short film for the Animator Expo, and then perhaps his most infamous creation: a sequel to GitS SAC, in SAC 2045, which brought in a plasticy CG style in place of the beloved traditional animation that proved... divisive at best. But this didn't stop him; his most recent work is a Blade Runner TV series, titled Black Lotus.

Alongside that, he continued to work on adapting Appleseed, rebooting the story yet again with Appleseed α in 2014 with CG studio Sola Digital Arts - indeed, Sola is pretty much Aramaki's studio, with almost all of their works directed by him.

Shirow's series, a predecessor to Ghost in the Shell, deserves a better introduction than I can write tonight - but it's the territory you'd expect: post-apocalyptic cyborgs in a bleak world. Far more than the others, α - which is something of a prequel, telling how the main characters came to the city where the story is set - was highly praised for its exceptionally detailed animation and mocap, though not so much its plot.

I admit, I'm taking a big chance on both these films. Neither managed to make much impact on release, but I'm definitely curious to see this anime that isn't 'anime'. (My original plan was to make this a story about a specific CG studio, but I decided it would be better to put the Final Fantasy films side by side on a night when I can write a proper history of FinFan!)

I know it’s like the “hee hoo vore anime” but It’s well above my personal threshold of gore and violence that I personally can enjoy a show having. (I am admittedly kind of a wuss, something like Beastars is basically my maximum amount of death and heavy handed metaphors I can handle orz)

However, my bf is OBSESSED with that show, and I know enough about it from going to anime conventions for years to know the basics about it. The whole “guy turns into huge, angry guy and epically protects his friends” is admittedly a very cool concept and makes my G/t heart happy. I know there’s quite a few fanfics out there regarding safe vore of the characters, so it’s definitely a demographic for sure. Also Sasha is cool. I do know that.
