Lol my black history month’s going great 👌🏿😁
I just remembered some weird convo I had at work with a client. He goes “I’m so sorry if this is a stupid question—” pause, because I already know once you say that, it’s going to be stupid.
“—but, why are your knuckles so much darker than your hands?” 🤦🏿‍♀️ he REALLY got me there. If the emoji didn’t give it away, well by now I should let you know I’m a dark-skinned black girl.
So imagine my immediate embarrassment, discomfort and overall awkward reaction to this indeed stupid question. I actually looked down at my hand to see what he was talking about.
I promise you I stared at my hand for 10 seconds before collecting my answer because I didn’t even notice until he said that. I go, “you know what, I don’t know…” bc HOW THE HECK DO YOU ASK THAT?
I didn’t create myself sir?!! How am I supposed to conclude how my knuckles are darker than my hands. Then I wondered… isn’t everybody’s’? I continue with “I didn’t notice until you said that.”
Lol I was so shook that he had the audacity to ask that bc he wasn’t even a little bit worried that he could somewhat offend me, get called out, cancelled, looked at funny… nothing.
He had all the support he needed to ask that peacefully without getting hate bc everyone around him… looks like him. Not me. There’s only one other POC where I work, and he’s not black.
It was definitely a new low from the all sorts of questions I’ve been asked so far. As for black history month, the other POC and I haven’t had any mention of it at all this month.
I hardly think they care to consider any acknowledgement of the month at all. I wouldn’t be surprised. Perhaps I’ll hear a mention of it later in the month. However, it’s already halfway over.
I guess I’ll also point out that technically, more like literally, the other POC is African. His nationality is Moroccan. But I still think he’s considered Arab since that’s North Africa.
Tbh idk enough about him to know how he identifies. Plus he looks entirely Arabic to me, so I wouldn’t put it past him. Nonetheless, I sometimes feel like ppl test my patience too often.
It’s sometimes isolating having no confidant who gets what I experience or I can look to or talk with at times so they can understand my feelings. I don’t relate to a lot of the ppl I work with.
And that’s okay. For many reasons, I never would anyways. A lot of them are in different life stages than I am, or speak multiple languages, or own very nice things and have a family etc.
Do different things outside of work, believe different religions, drink, smoke weed, etc. so it’s hard to find a common ground with anyone, except for really simple things like food/clothes.
It pains me sometimes to be on such surface level convos when I’ve been here long enough to be past those things. It just feels like I’ll never get to a point where I’m comfortable with the full group.
And I have my days where it’s better, but I just hate being in the moment when i feel like I’m on the outside looking in. I’m not included and they don’t even try to relate to me or make convo.
You know when they walk past you just to start a convo with someone to the left or right of me. Or they speak in their language and forget i can’t comprehend or contribute.
Or when they always seem to not mention if they make outside plans with each other but leave me out bc we don’t have rapport like that. I tell myself I’m fine with it since I’m introverted anyways.
In a lot of ways, I genuinely don’t mind not being invited out because at least I don’t have to decline with a lame excuse and can remain in the comfort of my own home with my own company.
I can catch up on sleep, or shows, cook, or do laundry, or eat in silence. Do whatever I want. And not have to feel like I’m wasting my time by forcing myself to go somewhere “to socialize.”
I don’t have to be uncomfortable trying to fit in or act engaged in the conversation, or pretend like I can relate to anything they just said or even understand when they switch languages.
I can be myself and not have to mask like I do at work when I fake laugh at a really unfunny joke, or act super extroverted and social just to not seem like a party pooper or Debby downer.
Or force my smile in front of clients and coworkers so they don’t realize I’m having a really off day. I can wear my relaxing clothes, eat as many snacks as I want, sing as loud as I feel.
And sleep as late as I want. Or as early. But there’s always that feeling like I’m missing out on so much. The fomo. Just wanting to be invited. Included. Thought about. Considered. Something.
It’s so unfulfilling working at a place where you get little to no joy out of it bc not even the ppl can give you some peace of mind that at least if the job sucks, you have someone.

FYI. I don’t smoke.

waffle house
The girl behind the formica counter — which seems to Maran almost stereotypical in that it could have been yanked out of some nuclear-era movie set — likes him. He can tell. Finds him cute the way girls who think they might want to fuck him but aren’t quite sure yet find him cute. She twirls her hair as she hands him two menus.
“Just that’s good.” He hands one back, hooks a thumb over his shoulder to the man that she has so far completely ignored. “We’ll end up sharin’ anyway.”
Her nose scrunches in distaste, eyes falling to Ben’s muddy combat boots and up, up to stringy rain-wet hair. When she seats them, she gives him another one of those looks. Ben switches his toothpick to the other side of his mouth and then leans out of the booth to shake his hair all over her uniform.
“Well now I’ve got to tip her twenty-five, Ben, thanks so much.” Maran mumbles.
“Or you could tip n-nothing.” He retorts, but Maran knows it’s for show. Despite the looming stress of his upcoming defense, he’s in particularly high spirits. They’ve had a good day — date day, every other Thursday because Ben’s got a particular study schedule. One of them picks and plans. For the last few weeks, they’ve spent the night ordering in and melting into Ben’s bed. Sometimes innocently, more often not.
Final location of today’s date hadn’t been Maran’s idea, surprisingly. He tended to go for the corn-syrup related choices in all aspects of life, whereas Ben was a little more mature about sugar intake.
“She’s going to spit in our food if you continue to be a prick.”
Ben offers him raised eyebrows, a filthy swipe of a tongue over his teeth. Maran rolls his eyes. He pretends to be engrossed in the menu when Benny gets up to glide around the table, move from across to right against Maran. He could resist the arm slung over his shoulders, tucking him closer into Ben’s side. He could. Really.
“I g-got a coupon code from Lark before we left.” Benny purrs in his ear, hand sliding to cup the back of his neck and squeeze. Talks as if he’s sharing the world’s most effective seduction line. And still, despite the ridiculousness, Maran shivers.
“You probably need the app.”
The nasty, suggestive expression on his boyfriend’s face turns immediately to disgust.
“I don’t w-want to download an app.”
“It’s not like you could,” Maran snorts. “Didn’t you leave your phone in Noms’ purse?”
“One of them.” Benny intones solemnly before crossing himself (Maran is pretty sure it’s the wrong way) and sighing. “Rest in fucking p-peace. I’ll never find that thing now.”
Maran flips the page of the menu. “Too bad. This morning, when you were in the shower? I sent you this picture—“
“Text Nomi and ask her to l-look for it.”
He laughs, fighting the whiny pleading and pawing hands that follow. He pretends, once again, that the menu’s taken up all his attention; dramatically, highly deliberative even though he knows from Xavier’s advice: the only true first judge of a breakfast place is the chocolate chip pancake.
*
Ben’s final piece of bacon disappears around the second plate of pancakes Maran orders.
“Swear,” he says, slumping back into the seat and Benny’s chest, “I could polish a whole other plate of those little fuckers.”
“You’re going to c-crash so hard later.” Ben says. It’s nearly all tease, but the note of genuine worry always weaves beneath. Maran turns his head and presses a kiss just beneath his collarbone in gratitude.
“Until then I think all that sugar unlocked like thirty percent more of my brain.”
He tilts his face up, briefly making eye contact with the waitress — and the cook beyond the counter, and another patron across the diner, and someone standing outside smoking— before Ben leans over him. Hair falls into his face, tickles his nose, and suddenly he’s overtaken by that wintery blue.
“I’m putting you in s-sugar rehab.”
“Our version of Candyland didn’t have that part of the map.” Maran jokes. “Must be an American thing? That and the big overcrowded prison of gingerbread people.”
Ben squeezes his cheek and holds his head still for a kiss. It’s neither slow nor chaste enough to be given in public, but Maran doesn’t pull away until it’s done. His face is hot from the attention, his fingers twisting the fabric of Ben’s awful printed shirt at his waist.
“You are so f-fucking hot for that.” Ben smacks a loud, obnoxious one to his forehead. “Benji laid the g-g-groundwork. Bless that loser.”
Maran scoots away. The attention is overwhelming — he doesn’t mind it. Loves it, really. Ben is sometimes just too — he’s so him, right there in Maran’s face. Unapologetic and nasty, even if he keeps his voice down. Possessive, even if he hides those little touches behind or beneath something. And if anyone saw —
What? Maran imagines him saying. If anyone saw, what? They’d know? Know that I touch you like that and worse when we’re alone? Know you like it? That you beg for it, sometimes?
Maran blinks rapidly: first at the pattern on Ben’s shirt, the cuffed sleeve that reveals the inky tapestry of his forearm, then at his syrupy plate, his sweating glass of water.
“Okay I — I’m going to. I’m going to go to the bathroom, yeah? And then when I come back, uh.” He pats Benny’s knee, nudging patiently then incessantly when he makes no effort to move.
“Uh?”
“We can practice your defense intro, yeah? That’s the part I heard you doin’ earlier.”
Ben’s turn to look at him with that far-off, misty sort of stare. The arm around his shoulders drops suddenly to his waist, and Maran has to fight not to be dragged into his lap.
“Fuck off,” Maran snorts, trying to contain his laughter so the poor employees and other diners don’t get more of an annoying show than they already have. Except Benny’s on the outside of the booth. Yanking ath him, genuinely trying to wrestle him into place, and Maran only narrowly escapes. He scoots across his lap, legs hooked into the aisle between their spot and the bar. Maran rocks his hips back, spine arching (diversion positioning himself better to escape, of course).
Ben grunts and his hands drop their hold briefly. No doubt with the intention of putting them somewhere else Maran will barely be able to withstand.
Instead, he takes the opportunity to push away, wrench himself free.
“You’re nasty.” Maran accuses, once standing outside the booth. He’s a little out of breath from the wrestling. He points his finger down at Ben, who darts forward to swipe his tongue around it. Maran makes a noise and then snatches his hand away, clutching his own wrist. “Nasty.”
“Hurry back.” Ben says. “So I can p-pull out my flash cards to show you.”
When he gestures obscenely between his legs, one ankle folded over his knee, Maran groans in disappointment. And also maybe like, a tiny bit of anticipation.
*
Waffle House bathrooms, as it turns out, are not the pinnacle standard of cleanliness. Maran stands in front of the big cracked mirror, debates a moment, then uses the corner of his hoodie to turn the faucet off.
“Changed my mind.”
“Fuckin’ —“ Maran sucks in a breath, hand over his heart when he spots Ben’s head peeking in the door. “Did you…Ben, I wasn’t gone two minutes!”
“I m-missed you.” Ben mopes. He slinks around the corner. If there’s a lock on the door, Maran doesn’t hear it get turned. “And I was sitting there thinking: oh fuck. Maran w-will lose out on the most important part of a Waffle House visit if I don’t commit to making it happen for him.”
Maran narrows his eyes suspiciously, but the slowly growing grin can do nothing but remain firmly in place.
“Fight?”
“Close.”
“Kitchen burns down?”
“C-Colder.”
Maran huffs. He lets arms wind around his waist from behind, settles his own hands on Ben’s wrists. “I give up.”
“That was two fucking guesses, Mar.” Ben laughs against the nape of his neck. The warm puff of breath makes Maran shiver once again, his nails digging briefly into tattooed skin. “Oh, nasty. Are you getting hot for it right now? H-Here? In fucking Waffle House?”
Maran glares at him in the mirror. “What’s the experience.”
Ben’s eyes darken. Swallow up a bit of that pretty color, become lidded and shark-like over his shoulder. One of his hands slips up Maran’s stomach (absolutely maddening) to touch his cheek. They both watch his hand trace that path, watch Maran’s double go slack jawed for a gasp when it settles around his reflection’s neck.
“Making out in the bathroom.”
He throws his hands up in the air, exasperated. “Seems like that might be a you thing. How many times —“
“None,” Benny says in a falsetto. “You’d be my first, tee-hee.”
Maran rolls his eyes again, squirming in his grasp so he’s held a little tighter. When Ben’s thick arm locks around his waist, his other flexing over Maran’s throat, he has to fight a whine. There’s a shiver of sensation under the skin, up his arms. Goosebumps follow it, then heat. He’s always hated when someone pulled or yanked on him to get him to slow down, stop, go somewhere else. Felt a bit like he was the punchline of a joke he didn’t have the privilege of being in on. Look at Maran, head off somewhere, better lead him around.
With Ben, with Nomi and her fucking trunks full of tantalizing stuff, Maran doesn’t feel any of that. With Ben restraining him, a hand that could turn mean or nice with every breath, he just feels…held.
He should put up more of a fight about it. The bathroom is nasty; when he tips his head back, loose because he’s been dizzily hypnotized already, he spots a strange mold spot in the top corner of the ceiling.
“Gross.”
Ben drags a hand down his chest, fingers rubbing little circles the closer they press towards his hipbones. “You would fuckin’ hate New York. It’s this times a thousand.”
“I’d like it,” Maran says thoughtfully, dreamily. He rubs his cheek on Ben’s shoulder, catches his gaze in the mirror from the corner of his eye. “You like it, right? So can’t be all bad.”
The world shifts in the pause that follows his worse. Maran finds himself suddenly facing Ben instead, his hands clutching the sink’s edge as he’s lifted.
“Real fucking unsanitary.” Maran says breathily, chest heaving. With ankles locked behind Ben’s back, he finds balance on the porcelain.
“I-I would gargle a gallon of that toilet water if it meant I got to go anywhere n-near your cock.”
Maran’s entire face scrunches in disbelief. “Holy shit. Now that’s the worst of the lot you’ve come up with so far. Nah, like, ever. Not with toilet water mouth you won’t.”
Ben leans forward, jerks Maran tighter up against his body until the press of their chests is inevitable. He makes filthy, loud smacking noises. Purses his lips and tries to go for Maran’s cheek, his mouth, his neck. He kicks and squirms until that hand lifts back up to his neck.
“Hold still.” Ben says, eyes locked to his lips. “Open your mouth.”
Maran’s lips curl “Well, which is it? Hold still or open, ‘cuz I’d be breakin’ one of the rules, then and—“
The fingers on his neck pinch in just slightly. Maran cuts off in a gasp, his hips jerking against Benny’s stomach. He doesn’t share the demand (command, Maran’s steam-cooked brain offers) again, but somehow there authority of that absence is enough to make Maran’s mouth drop open.
He stretches his tongue out too, sort of out of expectation, but judging from Ben’s ragged groan he hadn’t expected it. He puts their mouths together for a kiss the same way he always does; hovering just slightly before that first press, waiting. He likes when Maran leans in for the last bit of distance, and Maran likes taking it up.
They kiss and kiss, standing in that mirror. Messy and vulgar until Maran’s lips and chin feel wet, his cheeks burning. They kiss until he figures normal people would get tired of kissing, but he feels like that’s impossible with Ben. Every time he thinks he knows what to do, what to anticipate, he’s surprised. Like now: Ben urges him to tilt his head back with nosing kisses up the center of his throat. His hand returns. Pauses — Maran touches two fingers to the center of his chest and grins. Benny groans…then squeezes a little and devours Maran’s mouth. His vision shakes gently at the edges, that edging black before he’s released and all the color jolts back in.
Maran moans, hands to get between their bodies and press over where he twitches in his pants. But if Ben keeps moving against him, thigh wedged between and fingers lovingly petting over the slope fo his shoulder, Maran won’t have a choice but to leave the bathroom hard.
Or— or Benny is going to make him—
Maran gulps, his brows pinching together. Ben must recognize something about the sound because they kiss again with plenty words of encouragement.
“Fuck. Were the chocolate chip waffles that good?” Ben teases, his pleasant, looping accent right to Maran’s ear.
“I’m going to…Ben, if you do that again, I might—“
“I know.” Benny says triumphantly. His fingers curl around Maran’s throat for a split second before falling away entirely. His hand flattens down Maran’s chest, fingers tucked into the waistline of his jeans.
“But I’m thinking of this one p-position and we kind of need the car if we’re going to get your legs—“
Maran yelps and twists away, slipping from between his arms to slap a hand over Ben’s swollen mouth. His facial hair is pleasantly rough beneath his fingertips, and Maran has his curse strike thrice— he shivers. Violently.
“You were just moaning like you were dying, and you think someone’s going to hear me say that?” Ben’s question is muffled beneath his hand.
“Shut up.” Maran hisses. He glances back at the door then at Ben. Sheepishly. Because he still wants. “I wasn’t being that loud. I wasn’t. I was just…”
“Begging for it. You taste like chocolate right now, Maran. I don’t know why but it kind of makes me want to fuck your mouth?”
“Okay!” Maran yells, his voice echoing off the tile walls. He rights his shirt and then Benny’s, who stands surprisingly still while all of him is fixed. Maran fusses and fusses, no doubt distracting himself so that the blush will fade before they leave. He isn’t, unlike Benny, around the obvious red mark under his left ear. Undeniably mouth-shaped.
“Actually I’m feeling kind of sleepy after all those carbs, yeah? Let’s skip the, uh, studying. Practice. We can just go right to the car, right? And go back to yours so fast? Like, so fast?”
On their way out, Maran doesn’t mention the total on the receipt. Ben’s math is never wrong, but the number on the tip line reads something closer to thirty percent.

Fire Dogs
The fires had been blazing for weeks now, inching closer and closer to your home and firefighters were pouring in. You’d decided to stay, the fire was mostly moving away from town, thank god. The mayor had said that people who were willing to stay and help care for the hordes of firefighters pouring into town were appreciated. So even though you were a single Omega, you’d signed up. You could take in 2-6 firefighters depending on if they were willing to share a bed with one another and if you needed to sleep on the couch. You’d been assigned 3 men, all from New York City, one a Captain and all of them Alphas.
When you open the door as they walk up your sidewalk the first, a man with light hair and blue eyes, gives you a tight smile.
“Hi, welcome. I have a dog, is that okay?” The three men don’t even have to look at one another before all nodding yes. “Great, come on in.” You move out of the doorway and the three men come into the house.
“Thank you so much for opening your home to us.” The first man says, god he smells good, like sandalwood and lavender.
“It’s the least I could do.” You introduce yourself as your dog comes trotting into the room, Cooper’s tail wagging wildly. “But you can call me Fawn, and this is Cooper.”
“Sorry, I’m Steve Rogers, this is Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson.” The first man says introducing himself and the two men with him.
“It’s a pleasure. I’ll show you guys to your rooms.” You lead them upstairs and show them each to a room. Bucky takes your first spare room, Sam the second and Steve is in the master.
“Buck, you’ve got third shift, Sam you’re on first and I’m on second.”
“Do we start today?” Bucky asks as you make your way downstairs, you were given a small packet for the guys, things you would need to know like allergies, presentation, emergency contacts and dietary restrictions. All three are simple, no dietary issues, no allergies, Alphas, Sam has his wife Carol as his emergency contact but Steve and Bucky, or James as he’s listed, both have Rebecca Barnes, Bucky’s sister.
You get started on dinner and Sam wanders down into the kitchen bringing his
“So, why didn’t you leave town?”
“Nowhere to go. And the fire is heading away from here so hopefully everything will stay away from town.”
“The smoke doesn’t bother you?”
“I mean it’s not great but as long as Coop and I are okay I plan on staying. I’ve got some stuff packed up in my car and ready to go but I just haven’t pulled the trigger yet.”
“That’s fair. We do really appreciate you doing this. Letting us stay here.” He’s got such a soothing presence about him that you forget he’s an Alpha until his scent washes over you.
“It’s the least I can do,” you tell him with a smile, “so what does first shift mean?”
“Oh, it’s the really early shift, like 4am. Steve will be out running a crew since he’s a Captain back home and he’s around 10am then Bucky is 4pm.”
“What will I need for you in the morning? Breakfast? Coffee? Energy bars?”
“Coffee would be great. I usually take it with milk.” You jot down coffee and milk on a sheet of paper.
“How do the other two take their coffee?”
“Barnes likes it black, like a psychopath and Steve likes it with cream and sugar so he can’t taste the coffee.” You laugh and jot down creamer.
“Any chance you know what kind of creamer he likes?”
“Caramel I think.”
“I can always ask him too. I’ll set the coffee to go off at 3:15 for you.”
“Thank you.” Sam says as he sits down at the island. “What are you making for dinner?”
“Spaghetti. I make the sauce from scratch, from the garden.”
“It smells great.”
“Thanks, should be about a half hour. I’ve got meatballs in the oven and will have some garlic bread and green beans from my garden too.”
“You’re going to spoil us huh?” He says with a grin and you laugh, hoping that your suppressants work like they’re supposed to and keep you presenting as a Beta.
“I don’t get to cook for others often so I’m being a little selfish. Let me know if you need anything from town or want me to get anything. I’ll go shopping for the week tomorrow.”
“Are they paying you to host us?”
“No, but I don’t mind getting you guys stuff.”
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely, I wouldn’t offer if it was a problem.” You assure him and after studying you he nods.
“I’ll be sure to let the guys know.” You chat with Sam while you cook. You learn that his wife Carol is an Alpha and a doctor. The Alpha/Alpha pair is uncommon but if it works for them that’s wonderful. You also learn that he, Bucky and Steve served together and that Carol had outranked all three.
It seems that Steve has always been the one to lead their little trio, and when the smell of dinner lures him and Bucky down you include them in the conversation. Bucky, whose scent is oranges and cedar wood, is more chatty and flirty than Steve is but there’s this quiet strength about Steve that’s impossible not to notice.
Sam goes to bed immediately after dinner but Steve and Bucky stay up and watch the news with you. You set the coffee machine for Sam and leave him a note to help himself to anything he wants to eat. Then you bring Cooper outside, he wanders your wildfire lit backyard, the orange glow is spooky and the smell of smoke is thick in the air.
“Come on Coop, it’s bedtime.” You tell him leading him to the living room. Both Steve and Bucky are gone so you change into your pajamas and get ready for bed in the bathroom then head back to the couch where Cooper is laying dead center. “Move it Coop.” He grumbles but gets down, once you’re settled you let him back up on the couch between your feet.
You wake up as Sam closes the fridge.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.” He says softly. When he turns and sees you sitting up on the couch.
“No it’s okay.” You tell him as Cooper hops off of the couch. You follow him to the back door and let him out.
“Why are you sleeping on the couch?”
“They needed three more beds so I gave them three more beds.”
“We put you out of your room?” He asks with a small frown.
“I sleep more on the couch anyway, I usually fall asleep to one baking show or another.” You tell him with a sleepy smile, you hadn’t meant to tell them they’d taken all your beds but it was too late now.
“This is your home.”
“Seriously Sam don’t worry about it.” You say letting Cooper back into the house. “Be safe.”
“Thanks.” He says and you go back to bed on the couch.
The next time you wake it’s 9:00 and you want to make sure that you’ve got something ready for Bucky and Steve for breakfast so you get up. You feed Cooper then let him out again, if there wasn’t the fire you’d let him stay outside as long as he wanted. You sit down on the couch and pull your tablet into your lap. Cooper joins you on the couch as you start to draw your characters.
“Morning.” Steve’s voice is low and soft when he greets you.
“Good morning. There are pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns and bacon in the oven. The pans will be warm.”
“Thanks,” you hear him help himself to food and coffee then he comes out into the living room. “Do you mind if I join you?”
“Not at all. Don’t let Coop fool you into any food though.”
“No people food for him?”
“Just some fruit and veggies.” You tell him glancing up at the fire captain. “So Sam said you guys were on a 4-10-4 start time but what time are you all home?”
“We’re doing 12 hour shifts, so Sam and Buck don’t overlap but I will with both.”
“Okay, I’ll have dinner ready when you get back. Is there anything that I don’t have that you need? Sam said you liked a certain flavor of creamer.”
“The French vanilla is fine.”
“He said caramel?” You glance over at him again and he has this little shy smile on his face. “I don’t mind, I need to go get groceries anyway.”
“Caramel is my favorite.” He admits and you nod then get back to your drawing. He finishes his breakfast in silence then puts his dishes into the dishwasher, Steve heads back upstairs and you hear him finish getting ready before he comes back down.
“Be safe.”
“Thanks.” He says before closing the door softly behind him.
Bucky sleeps until almost noon, you’ve taken breakfast out of the oven and put it in the fridge. He somehow looks groggy still and you’re worried he didn’t sleep well.
“Good morning.”
“Morning. How are you?” His voice is low and husky.
“Good. Did you sleep okay?”
“Yea I slept great. I could still be asleep to be honest but I might get called in early.”
“Why?”
“There are less guys at base camp right now. Apparently a group of them had some trouble on the way? I don’t know but Steve called.”
“Breakfast is in the fridge if you wanna heat it otherwise I have lunch meat and stuff for sandwiches.”
“I love breakfast food.” He says making his way to the fridge. He starts a cup of coffee then opens the fridge.
You find out that Bucky is a chatter. Which is fine but you’re glad that you’re illustrating today rather than writing because there’s no way you’d be able to focus on writing. He asks you about living in the small town, how you ended up here, about your job, when he finds out you’re an author and illustrator of children’s books he promises to buy his niece a couple books. You tell him to leave his address and you’ll send him a signed copy of the one you’re working on, he excitedly does.
When he leaves at 3:30, not being called in early, you take a break and start on dinner. You want to make sure you’ve got food ready for Sam when he gets back.
Sam comes in at 4:45, Cooper barks excitedly and Sam sinks to the ground and Cooper immediately calms allowing Sam to wrap his arms around him. You don’t say anything, just continue to cook while Sam hugs Cooper to him. You hear him talking softly but you ignore him, whatever he’s saying to Coop is none of your business.
“I’m gonna go take a shower before I eat.” Sam says at full volume, the side of his face still pressed to Cooper’s side.
“That’s fine,” you assure him, “I’ve got about twenty minutes before the rice is done.”
“Okay.” He disappears then Cooper comes wandering into the kitchen. You give him a couple of treats and tell him what a good boy he is.
Sam eats in silence then goes up to his room, you’re pretty sure he goes to bed by 7 but after the day he’s had you can’t blame him.
At 10 you start reheating food for when Steve comes in. Sure enough, 10:30 rolls in and so does Steve. Cooper greets Steve with a wagging tail, Steve gives him a little pat and heads upstairs. You hear the shower turn on and after around 10 minutes Steve is back dropping down on the couch as Cooper puts a head in his lap. Steve absently pets Cooper and you place a plate of food in front of him.
“Thank you.” His tired eyes meet yours and he gives you a little half smile.
“It’s the least I can do.” You tell him sincerely. Cooper stays with his head in Steve’s lap until Steve goes upstairs to bed. You set up your bed on the couch and set your alarm for 3:30 in the morning so you can get food heated for Bucky and coffee and food started for Sam.
You fall asleep still smelling Steve on your couch.

Something they all at least somewhat have to try and take the edg off or do they have other ways of coping? I am sorry if this sounds like an ask,i was more along the lines trying to get your speculation on the matter
Masterlist
I see what you're saying and I do think that some of them would have had bad habits in the past but yeah-
They do need some time to take the edge off and refocus themselves in the present, but how do they do that in a healthy and safe way?
Let's talk about that.
I don't think I have all the necessary tags so go forth at your own discretion.
Time
Time would have definitely had a drinking problem that would have started in his Termina days.
He's never really felt the need to drink though- he only found that it would have kept him from going crazy.
But as he got out of there and talked more to Malon (and have his supply cut off- (just because he knew where to get it in Termina doesn't mean he knows where to get it in Hyrule, (nor would they give it to him, even if he did))), I like to think that he would have had to find other ways to calm himself down and think rationally through his thoughts and desires.
It happens by accident.
He was working at Lon Lon Ranch when he needed to go chop some wood and he found the repetitive and strenuous work, soothing.
He felt good. Accomplished even.
And a little disappointed when he was finished.
But he started doing that whenever he could and it became his main way to not only blow off some steam but to also calm himself down.
It helps with his anxiety and his need to help feel useful even when nothing is really happening that would require his assistance.
Twilight
Twilight finds that manual labor actually makes his anxiety worse.
He can't really find it within himself to get lost in it because he's already programmed for that to be a part of his day to day life anyway. So his brain can still go on and on even as he gets his chores done.
Twilight finds that a secluded spot with little distraction works best.
He's never really dabbled in other ways to deal with it nor has it come to his mind.
All he knew one say was that everything was too much and that he needed to be in a different area entirely.
No people, no noise.
He likes to hang out by small creeks or by the lake and fish if he really needs an excuse to do something.
Bonus points if he can rest with one of his favorite goats nearby, but that's few and far in between.
It's less meditation and more taking in the moment and letting time slip by for a change.
No to do lists, no action, no survival, no need to be on the run.
Just breath.
Warrior
Warrior would have smoked during the war but I don’t think he’d actually tolerate it all that well. I feel like he’d be more inclined to drink away his problems but with shortages left and right, and all efforts going into the war, there just wouldn’t be enough to go around.
So he’d smoke and hate it.
But it worked in a pinch.
Afterwards, whether through Mask’s and Wind’s influence or the end of the war, he’d want to find a way to quit.
It wasn’t easy but I feel like Warrior would attempt to quit cold turkey. Just drop the habit completely and what does he do when he feels the need arise again?
It’s actually little said than done, but he paints.
It’s less with ink and paint and more so, just moving his hands and a brush around.
If he happens to have a canvas it’s better but again, not easy to come around.
So what Warrior ends up doing most of the time, is taking a brush and some homemade ink from berries and brushing it over his scars. His favorite spot is the massive burn covering his left arm left behind as a gift from the Dragon Knight.
It feels tingly and electric, static follows the brush and the muscles clench with energy from the contact but while it’s uncomfortable for a while, it’s also not entirely unpleasant and it’s soothing to watch and feel. And it grounds Warrior in the moment until he no longer feels the urge.
When the urge is gone, he still does it when he feel anxious and concerned. Late at night is typical time for him to do this, where no one would see him or his scars and judge him for it.
Sky
Sky in the beginning would have slept more than he did before.
He was already inclined to fall asleep easily before all of his trauma, but afterwards he seemed to lose motivation to continue with the idea that things would go back to normal. There was still a lot of expectation placed on his shoulders and it was frankly not something he wanted to deal with.
So he sleeps.
Now this turns into more of a problem with being able to stay awake and to stay concentrated. It’s hard for him to pay attention to anything beyond him and that won’t do, considering me still has to finish his schooling.
What Sky does more often than not to keep him tethered to the present moment is work with his hands. He’s already had the tools for wood whittling but he was never allowed to use them in class and it ends being a bigger mess sometimes than he’s willing to deal with in general.
Sky also has some small pockets of clay that he fidgets with to keep his hands moving and he can keep it under his desk so that it’s not that distracting in class.
It helps him focus and when he thinks about what he’s been through and what he plans to do next, it keeps him from getting overwhelmed.
Wild
I think Wild would have just gone silent and unmoving when he’s having a bad day.
Kind of similar to how he gets when’s trapped in a memory but for longer and he doesn’t eat or sleep. It could last days at a time. He doesn’t even move unless he’s prompted or dragged to the spot.
The lights are on but no one’s home you know.
There’s not a lot he can do when it happens. Everyone just has to wait for it to pass and hope that it passes quickly.
But Wild gets better with time to know the signs when of one of those days is coming.
It’s not much, but Wild like to hop on the back of his horse and just take off.
Feel the rushing wind on his face and through his hair. He’s a full gallop for a while until the poor horse gets tired. At that point he just goes to the nearest stable and exchanges horses to do the whole thing over again.
Sometimes, when that’s not enough, he’ll go base jumping from as high as he can get even using Revali’s Gale to get higher and free fall. Wild is pretty good at catching himself with his paraglider at the last moment and he likes to see all of Hyrule when as he reaches the ground again.
It reminds him that he’s done a lot of good, that he’s capable of doing more good and that life isn’t over just one ended.
Four
Unsurprisingly, sometimes Four gets too lost in his own for his own good.
He’s got a lot to think about and very little way to get it out.
Four would actually throw himself into his work to try and distract himself from the memories, the anxiety, and the guilt of not being enough time and time again even if he saved the day in the end.
This doesn’t help.
He gets so lost into it, in his attempt to stop thinking all together that he completely goes into autopilot and over works himself. Not in the sense that he pulls a muscle and has to take it easy  or end up sore and tired and regrets it. No, no. What I mean is that he’ll keep working for days on end.
No sleep.
No food.
Little water.
No fresh air.
It ends up being a hard habit for him to break. Especially since he finds himself continuously trying to fall into a blank mindset even while he actually works to get commissions done.
So what Four has to do is find something else to do. Four more or less always has to have his hands moving, so it’s hard for him to put something down and not working on it.
He likes jigsaw puzzles, he likes to read, but he also likes to make stuff.
So in the end, when Four feel a little overwhelmed and feels himself slip into a self deprivational state, he’ll stop and goes inside his house to do a smaller project.
So he bakes, he knits, he does his puzzels. It’s enough for him to feel productive still but quick enough for him to stay present and make sure he’s still taking care of himself until the restlessness passes.
Wind
Wind doesn’t really have bad habits. He’s still young and processing his adventures.
I’m sure there’s alcohol on the pirate ship because pirates. But I don’t think he’d like it as much as some people want to write him.
Like, sure, a cup or two ain’t bad but I just can’t see Wind having a drinking problem. At least not now as everything stands.
In a few years it’s might be something he would need to be on the look out for if he’s aware enough but he was quite grasped the full implications of his position and trauma yet.
Because he’s just a kid.
He won’t know how twisted what happened to him was until he gets older and can he the age outside of his own mindset.
Wind has nightmares though and they’re ties when he gets memories that he doesn’t want to deal with at the moment- or ever again.
In the moment he thinks of his home, his grandma and his sister instead.
He thinks of his friends, both old and new.
The chain help with distracting him and he’s not above using them for the distraction when he feels that he needs one.
Wind also stretches a lot.
When he was with Warrior, he got into some of the drills they were teaching the soldiers and for some of the nimble ones, they had to start with stretches and he likes it.
So when it gets particularly bad, he throws himself through the motions and holds the poses for a bit longer than necessary.
So yoga. He does yoga.
And it centers him, it clears his head and he feels better after.
Legend
Legend screams.
Legend cries.
Legend will go on a rampage and destroy a whole forest if he’s having a particularly hard day.
Sometimes he’ll go find something big and scary just to fight it.
Blacksmithing is more a hobby for him at this point because it’s not something he can actually see himself doing in the future. It’s just to pass the time and help the day’s go by a little faster.
Legend likes to draw and when he’s tired after throwing whatever tantrum has taken over him, he’d go to a quiet spot and draw whatever he sees.
Sometimes, when he’s paying more attention to himself and he can feel himself getting frustrated and anxious, he takes a few days off.
He leaves his house and his items and goes up a mountain to think with some food, a notebook and some pencils.
He takes up map making.
Legend doesn’t think he’s any good at it, but with al the places he’s been, he tries to make a map for them by memory incase anyone he knows or will meet decides to visit.
His most carefully crafted map is of Koholint for... reasons.
It’s takes him an age and a half and he’s still not done with it, trying to get as much of it onto the paper as he can remember before he grows old and loses them entirely within his memory.
It’s a calming project he finds. He doesn’t feel sad when he does this for Marin for the people and their memory. It keeps them alive in his heart and sometimes he draws something on the map that doesn’t quite fit into his memory about the island but something tells him to keep it because it was there. Because he was only a visitor to their home.
The locals would know.
He feels good keeping them alive in some way.
It’s what she they would have wanted.
It’s what she they deserve.
She They always wanted to travel and it’s better to have a map to do so.
He takes up map making.
Hyrule
I don’t think Hyrule’s... Hyrule has a lot of these methods to go around. He wouldn’t have been exposed to drugs or alcohol simply because there’s too little people for him to interact with.
And if he was, I don’t think he’s use them as a coping mechanism simply because they would be too difficult obtain and gather to be sufficient.
I think that Hyrule would actually hang out with a Great Fairies by her pool when times got particularly rough.
There’s something about the place that resonates with him and feels calming, safe and relaxing to him.
As a bonus he’s always welcomed so he can pop in and stay for days at a time if he ever needed to.
He does not stay there for days.
But he appreciates the offer.
Hyrule doesn’t stay for more than few hours at a time because he doesn’t want to attract any monsters to his safe spots but even if the fairies don’t use any magic on him, he’s always rejuvenated afterwards and he feel like he can take on anything.
And given the world he comes from- it’s needed.

hey hey! i'm back with some stuff for Eren because tbh i really liked this scenario. this kind of makes me happy because i feel like this happens often, and ngl, i see Eren kind of like this? not exactly sure, but i hope you guys enjoy! 🖤
Ditched
Pairings: Eren Jaeger x Fem!Reader
Warnings: Slight angst, mentions of cheating, mentions of alcohol, fluff at the end
Tumblr media
A sigh came from Eren's mouth as he leaned up against the wall at the party he was currently at.
He got invited to this party that Reiner was hosting, of course Eren wasn't going to say no to a party, and Reiner being his friend he couldn't necessarily deny it would be bad. Reiner always threw some bangers and knew how to get all kinds of people to come. It was no lie to say Reiner was like a damn celebrity.
Eren on the other hand, wasn't having the greatest time.
He was waiting for someone. More specifically, Mina Carolina.
Eren and Mina had been talking for a few weeks and the two were starting to get to a point where they could reach a serious relationship, and Eren figured he'd invite her to the party. He genuinely liked her, but recently she started acting way different towards Eren. She became more dry and only interested in what Eren had to... offer. His friends explained that maybe she was just going through something, but something in his gut told him that things weren't right.
Here he was now, waiting for about 30 minutes or so. She still hadn't replied, nor showed up. It slightly made Eren's heart feel heavy, he felt like he had his time wasted.
He looked down at his phone, going to her messages.
8:28 <-Eren: hey i'm here
8:35 <-Eren: did you get the address?
8:47 <-Eren: Mina? where are you?
8:51 <-Eren: are you even coming?
9:01 <-Eren: hello??
Read: 9:05 P.M.
Eren clicked his phone off, placing it in his pocket after realizing she most likely wasn't showing up. Another disappointment in a talking stage, he was certain Mina was a nice girl. She was introduced to him Sasha, she never said anything bad about Mina. For one, Sasha always talked Mina up to Eren, but he guessed she wasn't into it anymore.
"Hey Eren! Did she show up?" Connie yelled over the loud music. "We've got some sick jello shots!" he said, smiling excitedly at him.
Eren didn't even feel excitement anymore, he just felt upset. His whole mood just crashed and he wanted nothing but to go home and sleep, maybe a nap would do him some good, or maybe some McDonald's.
"I think I'm gonna head home!" Eren shouted back, looking at Connie.
Connie nodded. "Are you sure?! Did she ditch you or something?!" he asked, looking around to find the black-haired girl who was no where to be seen.
"I guess so!" he yelled, looking at the time on his phone.
Eren felt the fullness of his bladder from the alcohol he consumed. He needed to pee before he leaves or he'll explode.
"Hey where's the bathroom!?" Eren asked, shouting at Connie.
He rubbed the back of his head. "Upstairs! Third door on the left!" he yelled, turning to walk away. "Drive safe by the way!" he added, walking away.
Eren shoved his phone back in his pocket and made his way up the long stairs to find the bathroom, his ears having a slight ring from going further away from the loud music that blasted below him.
As he made his way up the steps, he passed different people drunkenly falling down the stairs, or couples who were eating each other's faces. Making him cringe as he passed by as he heard the soft kissing noises coming from them. Gross.
He passed the multiple doors, hearing soft moans from girls who decided that hooking up with college guys was a good idea, or he heard different people yelling at those who were taking shots or hanging around in those usual smoke circles with marijuana.
"Third door on the left.." Eren said to himself as he stopped in front of the bathroom door which was shut.
The light was on and someone was clearly using it, so he decided to just wait for whoever was in there to come out. Eren kept looking at his phone as he waited, a few people passing by him and heading into the bedrooms. He assumed they were going in there to do the usual.
After about 10 minutes of waiting, Eren was starting to get antsy. Why the hell was someone in the bathroom for this long? He thought the person could be sick or maybe two people decided to go and hookup in the bathroom.
He decided to just knock, approaching the door he used his finger to knock on the door.
"Yo! Open the door! I gotta pee," he said, leaning against it so whoever was in there could hear him.
No response.
He sighed, whoever was in there clearly heard him, because he heard shifting behind the door.
"Look, just open the damn door. A line is going to form soon," Eren said, knocking once again on the door.
No response once again.
Eren decided to just say fuck it and open the door. He hesitated a bit and put his hand on the knob, nobody was really around to see him. He looked around and turned the knob which was unlocked, pushing it open he was faced with a girl.
She was leaning against the sink, a red solo cup next to her. Eren took in her features noticing dark mascara smudged around her eyes, along with tears going down her face.
The girls head snapped towards him. "Oh my God! I'm so sorry... um, I was just in here. Were you trying to come in?" she asked, wiping the tears from her cheeks.
Eren stood there for a moment taking in her appearance. "No don't worry.. um my bad for slamming the door open. I just needed to pee," he replied, rubbing the back of his neck. "Why are you crying? If you don't mind me asking," he asked, looking at her puffy eyes.
She sniffed. "Um.. it's really stupid, especially telling a stranger. I'm sorry, also don't apologize for coming in. I didn't hear you, I'm gonna go now." she said, grabbing her items.
Eren felt guilt washing over him noticing how sad she looked, she had nobody around her. Usually when he found girls crying at parties they were surrounded by their friends, but she was alone. Something about it didn't sit right with Eren, and he wanted to know what was up with her.
"Wait!" Eren said, stopping the girl in her tracks.
She looked back with her brows furrowed. "Huh?" she said.
He looked away and then back at her. "Look I know I may not know you, but you seem really upset right now, and I know how it feels to be alone. If I can, I'd like to know why you're crying in a bathroom." he replied, crossing his arms.
The girl stopped and stood, looking down at the floor. "Um.. well, it's a lot and I feel like it'd just bother you really. I need to call an Uber anyway," she said, going onto her phone. "Thank you really but it'd just burden you," she added.
Eren leaned against the door frame. "You had a shitty night and so did I, least I can do is help you out. Of course no force," he said, shrugging.
She thought for a second. Maybe he was just trying to be nice? He didn't seem like a creep, considering he didn't seem dressed to impress anybody.
"Um sure I guess..." she replied, putting her phone away.
Eren was surprised at her answer. "I need to pee first if you don't mind," he said, smiling a bit.
She felt a small smile grow onto her lips as she moved outside the bathroom. "Take your time," she replied, leaning against the wall outside the bathroom.
Eren finished his business and exited the bathroom. He saw the girl standing outside, she seemed to be in deep thought.
"Let's go," Eren said, taking his keys out of his pocket and heading down the stairs.
The girl slowly followed behind him as he made his way outside, she felt the cooler air hit her skin causing her to shiver. She totally forgot how chilly the air was, rubbing her arms for warmth she stopped noticing the car he walked up to. He had a nice car, tinted windows, freshly clean, he seemed to know how take care of it.
"Hop in," he said, unlocking the passenger side door.
She got in and shut the door, feeling the cool leather of his seats go up against her skin. Making her shiver and goosebumps litter onto her skin.
Eren couldn't help but notice how nervous she seemed, he wasn't a creep. He didn't have bad intentions with her at all, she just seemed to be having a bad night, so he wanted to be of some help. Even if she didn't ever speak to him again.
"I know you're nervous and I know what you're thinking, but trust me I'm not going to do anything bad to you. I just wanted to be a cool person and help you out, since you were crying and you were by yourself." Eren said, breaking the silence between them.
She nodded, swallowing thickly. "I see.. what's your name?" she asked, nodding.
"Eren.. and you?" he asked, turning on the car to heat it up.
"(Y/N)," she replied, putting her seatbelt on as he began to drive his car away from the house.
Her name was pretty to Eren.
"Do you want to get some McDonald's? I don't know about you but food makes me feel better," he said, throwing a smile her way.
(Y/N) looked his way and smiled a bit. "Yeah.. sure, um I can pay for myself," she said, searching through her small purse she had with her.
Eren looked over. "Nah don't worry about it. I can pay for ya," he replied, turning into the McDonald's. "What do you want?" he asked, looking into her (e/c) eyes.
She pondered for a moment on what she wanted. "Chicken nuggets," she replied, giggling a bit.
Eren shot her a toothy smile. "Those are my favorite so I'm gonna get the same," he said, turning to the drive-thru.
He ordered their food and gave the bag to her as he drove to one of the empty parking spaces. She felt a bit more comfortable with him now, he seemed chill. She was starting to trust him, she felt relieved knowing he wasn't trying to do anything weird or dangerous.
Eren looked at her before putting the car in park. "Alright, let's get snacking." he said, removing his seatbelt.
(Y/N) gave the bag to him, moving her body so she was against the door. She removed her seatbelt and watched as Eren tossed her chicken nuggets. She put it on the armrest between them, and watched as he started eating.
"Thank you... for the food," she said, looking up at him.
Eren looked up and nodded. "Oh yeah, no problem! Party food was the worst, I drank too so I wanted something to eat." he replied, taking a sip of his drink.
(Y/N) started to eat her food and the two chatted about things. Getting to know each other, which made her feel a little more comfortable. They actually went to colleges that were close by, and they knew a few of the same people.
"Then this one time I almost poured the chemicals down the drain, and the teacher almost killed me!" Eren said, laughing at the memory. "I never saw a teacher more pissed off than ever," he added, rolling his eyes playfully.
She giggled a bit, looking down at her food. "Duh! That's like, one of the first things you learn in chemistry!" she replied, laughing even more.
He rolled his eyes once again, adjusting his bun. "So what? Sometimes you gotta live on the edge or whatever," he said, looking at the different cars driving past on the road. "Oh! By the way, what's your address? I'm sure you'll want to be home after this," he asked, taking his phone to open Maps.
(Y/N) looked over at him. "Oh! Um.. let me put it in," she replied, taking his phone from him. She felt a bit sad that it had to end, she kind of liked his vibe. He seemed chill and like a cool dude.
She handed his phone back to him after putting her address in. "Alright, you don't live too far. Let's get going," he said, putting his seatbelt on and starting the car.
"Wait!" she said, looking at him.
Eren stopped and furrowed his brows. "What's up? Did I do something?" he asked, nodding at her.
She looked away for a second. "Um.. Eren, do you have to drop me off right now?" she asked, avoiding his gaze.
He furrowed his brows in confusion. "I just figured you wanted to be home since it was late, why?" he asked.
(Y/N) sighed. "I just... um, would it be weird if we hung out a little longer? Of course we don't have to," she asked, nodding.
Eren smiled. "No that's not weird at all, just tell me where you wanna go," he said, looking at her.
She felt heat rush onto her cheeks seeing his smile, Eren was charming to (Y/N) and even though they just met, she enjoyed talking to him.
"Um.. just take me wherever! We can go anywhere," she replied, putting her seatbelt on.
Eren smirked. "Alright! I know where to go," he replied, putting the car in reverse and driving out of the parking lot.
-
The rest of the car ride was so much fun. Eren and (Y/N) jammed to music, cracked jokes, stopped for ice cream, and even told each other funny stories.
Eren pulled into this clearing on a hill, showing a view of the city and the highway. The lights in the distance gave a perfect view of everything. (Y/N) was surprised seeing such a pretty view, she never knew something like this ever existed. If she knew she'd come up here often, she was always a fan of views, and so was Eren.
"Let's go," Eren said, opening his car door and exiting his car.
(Y/N) followed and stood next to the hood of his car, which Eren was sitting on. She felt a bit awkward and shy in the moment.
"Oh.. my bad, my ass takes a lot of space. You don't have to sit," he said, giving a weak smile.
(Y/N) laughed a bit, climbing to sit next to him. She felt the metal on the back of her legs, causing her to shiver, as well as the cooler air that surrounded her.
"You cold?" Eren asked, looking at the way she was shivering.
She giggled a bit and nodded her head. "Y-Yeah.. my fault for wearing this," she replied, adjusting the skirt she was wearing.
Eren got off the hood of the car and went to the backseat, he grabbed a black cotton blanket he always kept back there. Sometimes before classes he would take a snooze in his car, and he used the blanket for warmth.
"Here.. I uh, take naps before class." he said, handing the blanket to (Y/N).
She reached for it, feeling his fingertips brush against hers, making small sparks come from his touch. His fingers felt.. warm. She wrapped the blanket around her frame, feeling the warmth surrounding her made her feel cozy.
"Thank you.. really, you didn't have to do this." she said, looking over at Eren.
He stared at the city lights. "It's no problem, you looked like you needed some cheering up anyway," he said, bumping his elbow into her arm.
(Y/N) looked into his green eyes which were twinkling in the light. "You never mentioned why your night was shitty," she said, nodding her head at him.
Eren felt the disappointment coming back to him about Mina. "O-Oh! Yeah, uh.. it's a lot really," he said, looking towards the girl. "I can tell you," he added.
She smiled. "I have time," she replied, adjusting herself a bit and wrapping the blanket around her a bit tighter.
Eren sighed, staring at the ground. "I got ditched tonight by a girl who I thought liked me. I was kind of stupid to ignore how she was acting, I guess in a way I should have taken the signs, but I liked her too much. She was supposed to join me tonight at the party but she never showed, so I guess that's the end of that," he said, shrugging his shoulders.
(Y/N) felt bad for him, nobody deserves to have that happen to them. Eren seemed like a nice guy to her as well, she couldn't exactly see why a girl would pass up on him.
"That's really mean... I couldn't imagine being ditched by a guy. I'd probably feel so embarrassed," she said, looking towards him. "How long have you guys been talking?" she asked.
"Three weeks? Almost maybe a month? I was planning on asking her out tonight too but I guess she had other plans," Eren replied, leaning on his elbows.
(Y/N) nodded, staring at the ground.
"Say... you never told me why you were crying, do you wanna talk about it? No force," he asked, leaning up to look at her face.
A frown formed onto her lips thinking about the events that occurred. "Yeah I feel like I need to vent," she replied, putting her knees to her chest.
Eren turned to face her. "Ready when you are," he said, giving her a reassuring smile.
Her smile grew as he looked at her. "Well um, my boyfriend- well now ex-boyfriend cheated on me a few weeks ago, he hooked up with someone I was close with. My friends brought me to that party to sort of 'let loose' in a way, then they ended up ditching me. I didn't know anybody there, so I just went to the bathroom and broke down." she explained, feeling a few tears well into her eyes.
Eren felt a tug at his heart hearing what she had to say. He couldn't imagine what she was going through right now, especially with her ex.
"I'm so sorry (Y/N), those people aren't your friends for sure. You should honestly stop talking to them," he said, crossing his arms.
She laughed a bit, wiping the tears from her cheeks. "It's just been hard you know? None of them seemed to care when he cheated on me, and they sort of just brushed my problems away." she said, shrugging her shoulders. "It sucks telling you this," she added.
Eren placed his hand on her wrist. "I get it, what you're going through is so difficult. Having people around who don't care are the worst and it sucks seeing you this way, you seem like a really cool girl! Well, from what I've seen anyway. That's besides the point, you're really cool and those people don't deserve you. Your ex is also an asshole too," he said, rolling his eyes.
She smiled a bit at his words. Nobody really said that kind of stuff to her before.
"Same goes to you, you seem like a nice guy, and whoever that girl was who ditched you, she's missing out." (Y/N) said, smiling at him.
Eren chuckled a bit. "I guess in a way we both had a shitty night, but it ended pretty great." he said, looking at the sky.
"Eren... thank you for everything. If you didn't find me in that bathroom I probably would be eating ice cream and sobbing to Twilight right now," she said, laughing a bit.
He smiled. "No problem (Y/N), if I didn't find you I'd probably be at home watching some stupid sports compilation," he said, laughing along with her.
(Y/N) leaned against the windshield. "Do you want to head back?" she asked, looking towards him.
He sat up, stretching a bit. "Yeah sure," he replied, standing up and heading towards the drivers seat of the car.
The two hopped in and drove back to (Y/N)'s apartment, the drive felt long, but their company kept each other in good moods.
Eren pulled into the parking area and looked towards (Y/N). "Tonight was fun," she said, smiling at him.
A smile grew onto his lips. "Yeah it was, you made tonight great." he replied, putting his car in park.
(Y/N) grabbed her stuff. "Well... thank you really, you made me feel a bit better. I appreciate you a ton," she said, unbuckling her seatbelt.
"Yeah, no problem at all," he replied, looking towards the front of the building.
He unlocked the car and watched her get out.
"Wait!" Eren said, stopping her in her tracks.
(Y/N) looked back at him. "What's up?" she asked, nodding a bit
Eren grabbed his phone from his pocket and handed it to her. "May I.. get your number?" he asked, smiling a bit at her as a blush formed onto his face.
She felt heat rush onto her cheeks, taking his phone in her hands. "Of course," she said, smiling as she entered her number into his phone. "Text me tonight, we should facetime." she added, handing his phone back to him.
Eren smiled, taking his phone back. "I'd love that," he replied, smiling again at her.
"See you then, and drive safe!" she said, closing his car door.
He watched as she entered her apartment building, Eren smiled to himself thinking about what happened tonight.
Who knew being ditched would lead to this?

Familiar Cerulean Eyes
Might change title later.
Omegaverse: Alpha Dabi X Omega Reader, also a little bit of Alpha Shoto x Omega Reader.
Summary (Kinda?): Reader was sold to the Todoroki family to be Touya Todoroki’s mate when they reached of age due to the readers nullification skin quirk (I don’t know what to call it). Endevor was 100% sure that Touya would present as an Alpha and the reader has been showing signs of being an Omega since early childhood. However, after Touya died *Ahem*, Endevor kept reader around with the plans of giving her to one of his other kids if they showed promise. Shoto being the one that was chosen for her after he presented. However things go sideways when she is kidnapped by Dabi.
Notes: Reader has a nullification quirk that only works on her own body. Basically her skin acts as a barrier and anything that is made from a quirk cannot effect her. Example being that she isn’t burnt by any of the Todoroki’s fire, by the airborn effects such as the smoke that she inhales still cause damage. Physical quirks like Kirishima wouldn’t be affected by her quirk. Also piercing quirks that deal with getting past her skin like Toga’s or Stains would still affect her. Feel free to ask questions!
Also this is a slow burn. There is no smut in this part but I expect there will be at some point.

Word count: 3.5 K
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fire. It was everywhere. You had never seen a fire this large, you were completely engulfed in the flames, yet you weren’t burning. You’re quirk was the reasoning, preventing any damage to you from outside quirks. That was the entire reason that the alpha Enji Todoroki bought you, because he knew you couldn’t be harmed by the current inferno that was his eldest son Touya Todoroki.
“Y/N!” Came the gruff Alpha voice of the current number two hero, glaring down at you. “Make him stop before he burns this whole place down.”
You shivered, even at such a young age, you showed all the tale tell signs of being an Omega. You wanted to tuck tail and run away from the angry Alpha glaring down at you, but you didn’t dare. Glancing back at the raging inferno, you hesitated, while it wouldn’t burn you to touch the fire, it didn’t make it any less terrifying.
“GO!” The smack across your petite face made you chirp loudly with pain, covering your swelling cheek with your hand, tears springing to your eyes.
The fire in front of you both suddenly switched to a different hue, and you could tell that it was burning even hotter than before. The fire was the last time you looked at something with that shade of blue and enjoyed it.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Piercing blue eyes glared at you from across the room as you gathered up the plates from the table. They followed your every move and you could feel your omega begging to release out a distress scent or to chirp or anything under the terrifying glare of the imposing Alpha. Why was he still here?
“Y/N, I will accompany you to the market today.  I have a couple things I need to get anyways.” Shoto was releasing his usual calming scent but he wasn’t even looking at you. He was watching the news on his phone, completely ignoring whatever conversation his father was trying to have with him.
“Okay, great.” You tried to keep your voice even as you finished up the dishes quickly. You wanted to get out of here as soon as possible. Your omega even more so, but you should of paid attention to how you worded your response.
“He is an Alpha and you will regard him as such!” The larger Alpha’s voice rang throughout the house and you could feel your body freeze against it’s own will. You let out the softest of all chirps, hearing the chair scratch against the floor as he stood up, the temperature in the room raising.
“I am not her Alpha yet. She can address me as she pleases!” Shoto’s own alpha voice rang out against his father’s, steam building in the room as the hot and cold met. You closed your eyes and slapped an imaginary hand across your omegas mouth to keep her quiet. If you didn’t react, he would leave you alone.
“Let’s go Y/N. I’ll have the car pulled around.” You immediately turned and dashed from the room following Shoto’s quick stride, only stopping to quickly bow to Enji, your eyes downcast.
Once in the car, Shoto let out a soft sigh, his eyes watching outside the window. It was a Saturday, and he didn’t have classes for the day which is the only reason you were allowed outside of the house, away from the protective scent of the pack.
“I’m sorry, Shoto… I should have chosen my words more carefully.”
“Don’t worry about it.” He didn’t even glance at you, causing a slight frown to cross your face. He had grown so detached from you recently since he had told you he wanted to wait until he graduated from UA to bond with you. You had been totally fine with the request, and in all honesty you were relieved. You had grown up together, and you knew that one day it would have to happen, but you were very much so uncomfortable with the thought of being intimate with Shoto. You knew he probably felt just as uncomfortable. But that didn’t stop your Omega from worrying about the fact that Shoto may never want to be with you like that.
“A-are we okay?” You could feel your omega start to stress, a sour smell filling up the car as you crossed your arms around yourself feeling the overwhelming anxiety creeping in of a mate that would never want you. You knew from the day that your family sold you to the Todoroki’s because of your quirk that life wouldn’t be a fairy tale, but you had always latched onto the fact that the Todoroki pups were so sweet to you from the moment you met. After your to be mate, Touya had died, Shoto was always there to tell you it wasn’t your fault. You had hoped that you could at least be happy with him.
Shoto finally looked at you, his nose scrunching up at the smell emiting from your omega, him releasing his own calming scent, much stronger than at the house. Waving you over to him you shuffled across the seat and up against his warm left side, desperately trying to keep your emotions in check. He pulled your hair back and nuzzling up against your scent glands trying to calm you down the way he often saw other alphas do, making sure to scent you lightly so that you would be safe at the market from other alphas.
“Y/N, relax, we are fine. It will all be fine. Once I graduate and become a pro hero, we can bond and we won’t have to stay in that awful house anymore. Then you can nest all you want and no one will take it apart. I promise. I’m sorry for making you feel like this.”
You relaxed once you were engulfed in his scent, peppermint filling up your nose. While he was a couple years younger than you, you knew he would make a great alpha. He did genuinely care about you, and you knew he would always protect you and keep you safe. He wouldn’t get mad at you when you “made a mess” of your room nesting. Maybe one day you two would be able to be proper mates and there will be a different kind of love there. Maybe some pups of your own.
The car had pulled to a stop and you let Shoto finish up scenting you to cover up your own omega smell before you both exited the car. Shoto offered you his hand to help you out which you happily took, and was a little shocked when he didn’t immediately let go of it. His grip was light and awkward but at least he was trying to show you it was okay. It was short lived though when about ten feet into the market it was too crowded to even hold hands. Instead you lightly gripped onto the back of his shirt following him closely as he weaved through the crowd.
You followed him like that for about ten minutes, only briefly pausing at stalls to pick up the short grocery list that you had brought with you for the week. Only after the list was complete did he finally stop at a stall with freshly made Soba. Rolling your eyes as he weighed his choices as to have it hot or cold you looked around the market.
Something smelled… familiar… but also new at the same time. It was hard to pick it out over all of the mingling scents from the many different people around you. You also weirdly felt like you were being watched. Glancing around you didn’t see anyone staring at you that you noticed, and what was weird about it was that your Omega didn’t feel threatened. Shrugging it off as Shoto turned to ask you what your order was, the world around you exploded into chaos.
“Fire!” Screams surrounded you at every turn and the air turned foul as all of the panicked scents filled the air. Soot covered people’s faces and you could feel the heat of the fire but couldn’t see where it was coming from. Shoto was gone from your sight and immediately your Omega screamed out for him to come back. Desperately wanting to smell his familiar and comforting scent again. You were shoved to the ground by a passing beta group and you felt a sharp pain in your wrist as you braced yourself against the ground.
“Shoto!” Tears were streaming down your face and you weren’t even sure when you started crying. Everything was getting hazy and the smoke in the area was making it hard to see or breathe. The fire must be close if it was affecting you like this. Briefly you wondered if you were in the fire yourself. You could hear others calling out and screaming to run around you but you were frozen to your spot in fear. You hated fire. Everything about it was awful. Memories started swimming in your head of cerulean blue eyes and a fire that matched them as well as the red fires that emanated from the Alpha back at home that hated you.
You felt yourself curl up in a tight ball on the floor behind the food stall, your omega chirping wildly, desperately just wanting Shoto to come back and take you away from all of this. Where did he even go? Probably to go be a hero and put the fire out, but why would he leave you alone?
You sat frozen like that, in full panicked omega mode, for what felt like hours but in reality was only a few minutes before you passed out from the smoke fumes. Only waking up when lean arms reached under you, picking you up and cradling you in their arms protectively before carrying you off to safety of home. You barely registered the pretty blue of the eyes staring down at you before you were out again, consumed in darkness.
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blue flames fading to red licked against your skin, you not feeling anything but an uncomfortable heat from them as you pushed through the smoldering rubble searching, screaming.
“Touya! Where are you?” You choked on the smoke filling your lungs, but you didn’t dare stop searching. This was your fault. You should have gone in and calmed him down when you were told. It would be your fault if he overheated. Your fault if he got hurt, if he…
No. There was no way. You pushed past the burning in your lungs from the smoke. While the quirk created fire couldn’t hurt you, the smoke that resulted from it definitely could. But still, you kept searching, and you would keep searching until the fireman came and pulled you away, tears streaming down your face as you realized that you’re to be mate was no where to be found.
You would never forgive yourself for the death of Touya Todoroki.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You sat up with a start, your head pounding as you gasped for air, your lungs still thinking they were full of smoke. You were surrounded by a scent you didn’t recognize. No, that’s not entirely true. You had smelled it before, but you couldn’t place where. It was a strange smell, like a cinnamon whiskey covered in smoke and tobacco. Rubbing your head you looked around at your surroundings, letting out a chirp and pulling your knees into your chest when you realized you were being watched.
The bedroom you were in didn’t look familiar, but the cerulean eyes staring back at you from a chair in the corner distracted you from looking in detail. The lights were out and the dark grey walls made you feel like you were in a teenagers goth bedroom, the only light coming from between the blinds on the window. Other than the bed, a dresser and the chair, there wasn’t very much in the room, if you excluded the overwhelmingly tall and lean black haired alpha that was splayed out comfortably across that chair, his eyes never leaving yours as you did a quick scan of the room, a smirk on his lips.
Even in the barely lit room, you didn’t miss the glint of silver staples and the marred purple-toned skin. You also couldn’t ignore the section of the ceiling that was scorched black above your head. Your eyes widened at the realization that the delicious and somewhat familiar scent was emitting from the alpha in front of you. The smell of cinnamon whiskey and tobacco engulfed in smoke was oddly a warm and welcome smell, but that didn’t change the fact that it was coming from one of the most notorious villains in Japan.
His eyes never left yours as you did a quick mental scan of yourself. You don’t think you were injured other than the throbbing in your right wrist. You also were still in the same clothes as you had been wearing at the market, and even though the alphas scent was strong, you could barely make out the peppermint smell of Shoto, comforting you a little at knowing the alpha hadn’t forcefully scented you. Yet.
The Alpha in question was growing tired of the silent game but he was just as stubborn to let you speak first, pulling out a cigarette and placing it between his lips, lighting the end of it with his pinky at the same time. The small candle sized blue flame was enough to have your omega releasing a distress scent that you were surprised you were able to hold back until now.
The Alpha merely glanced back up at your form, his eyes raking your body slowly, enjoying the view that was in front of him.  The way his eyes hugged the curves of your body, slowing down in parts that particularly enticed him, had you shivering like a wet pup. Once his eyes reached yours again, you watched as his tounge slipped out, sporting a glinting metal ball, licking his lips slowly keeping eye contact with you.
The omega in the back of your head, the one that apparently had a death wish, made a quip about how hot that was but you immediately shut her up and reminded her who exactly you were dealing with.  And as if you needed to be reminded, the Alpha finally, taking his time, stood up, towering over you and taking up a majority of the small room. You watched as he flicked his smoked cigarette to the floor, stepping on it to put it out.  You couldn’t help but pull yourself into the corner of the bed, inching away from him and pulling into yourself, chirping wildly as you closed your eyes waiting to die. You weren’t sure how he was going to kill you, but you didn’t think it was going to be quick when he found out he couldn’t burn you.
Instead of the all too familiar heat from fire, you felt the bed dip as his rough hand slip underneath your jaw, forcing it up to look at him. Opening your eyes you were nose to nose with the bright blue eyes that took your breath away. From this close you could see all the little flecks in them that made up their piercing color. They looked rather familiar.. handsome even, but you refused the dwell on that and forced yourself to stop chirping  and releasing your distress scent as it clearly wasn’t helping the situation. You recognized that the villain probably had the room scent proofed and sound proof, or you were far enough away from civilization that no one would come to your rescue just based off of a distressed omega.
Covering your omega’s distress was difficult, but you had plenty of practice in the last several years, and you were all too familiar with the fact that some alpha’s got off on terrified omegas.
He still didn’t speak as he looked down at you, in fact he didn’t seemed rushed at all as his eyes searched yours for something you weren’t sure, flicking to different parts of your face like he was trying to memorize it. His grasp on your chin didn’t loosen either though, and his free hand snaked its way onto one of your ankles, gripping it lightly, to keep you in place.
You couldn’t handle the silence anymore.
“Are you going to kill me?”
The smirk on his face faltered and a look of almost confusion and something else briefly passed across his face, before it was covered back up with the signature smirk.
“Why would I do that little mouse?”
“Because you’re a villain..” You’re voice was scratchy. You were thirsty, but you weren’t about to tell the murderer in front of you that.
“Ah, so you do know who I am.”
You nodded, unconsciously licking your lips to relieve the ache that was settling there from the dryness. This only caused the villain in front of you to shift his gaze down to your lips, his own parting slightly, breathing in your scent.
“What’s my name?” His voice had dropped an octave and sounded raspier now, which you didn’t think was possible. The sound of it stirred something deep inside you that you begged to hush. The omega inside you was at war with itself. You reminded it once again that you were face to face, nose to nose, with a damned murderer. So to further remind yourself, you forced out his name between clenched teeth.
“Dabi.”
It almost seemed like the villain pouted for a second, like he was wanting another answer, but instead of providing you insight to his reaction, he pulled away from you,  turning back to his chair and sitting down. A wrinkle on his nose in disgust.
“Why do you smell like that half and half hero brat?” That caught you off guard. How did he know Shoto’s smell? How long was he watching you before he captured you?
“H-he’s my alpha..”
“You’re not bonded.” He pointed out lazily.
“We were waiting.”
“What would he possibly be waiting for? That’s just an invitation for someone else to come along and snatch you up5. By the smell of things, he doesn’t even take the time to scent you thoroughly. You sure he even wants you? Has he even noticed you’re gone?”
Your omega let out a soft chirp, hurt by Dabi’s words. You didn’t need to be reminded of anything that he was saying. In the back of your mind you knew it was all true. As much as Shoto tried for your benefit to make things work between you two, you wondered if he even cared that you were gone. Losing you meant he finally had the free will to court whoever he wanted. That Momo girl he was always talking about from school came immediately to your mind.
You tried to push these thoughts to the back of your mind and remind yourself that Shoto still cared about you and still would protect you no matter what. You tried to tell yourself that he was probably on his way right now to come save you and that once he did he would pull you into his arms and dispel any of the villains scent and replace it with his own until you couldn’t smell anything but peppermint.
You also ignored the lone thought pressing into your skull from all sides that maybe you didn’t want Shoto to come rescue you. Maybe you could get out of this without his help and maybe you could start a new life, one where you got to choose your own Alpha.
“Let me go.” Your voice barely a whisper, you couldn’t meet the eyes of the Alpha in front of you.
“No.” He snorted and rolled his eyes like what you said was the stupidest thing he ever heard, and maybe it was given that you just asked a psychopathic killer to just let you go on a whim. “Here’s the deal. You are staying here with me, because you are mine.”
You met his eyes when he said that. Confusion and a bit of fear creeping back into your face. Your heart rate picking up as you hugged your body to shield it from him.
“Don’t worry. I won’t bond you without permission, I’m not into rape.” His face showed that he meant that at least, the disgust at even the thought of a forced bond evident for a moment before he shook his head, his eyes caressing your body once again just like he had done several minutes earlier. “But mark my words, Omega, I’ll get permission.”
He licked his lips slowly, once again showing off the piercing in his tongue. His eyes focusing on your lips before finally meeting your own eyes again. You could smell the pheromones pumping off him, making the air around you smell absolutely enticing against better judgment.
“You were out for almost 8 hours, we need to get you taken care of.” You swallowed, unsure of exactly what he meant by that. 8 hours? And Shoto wasn’t here yet? “Are you hungry?” His voice once again dropped down to that raspy level, and you couldn’t help but let out a small squeak like a mouse caught in a trap.
For some reason, unbeknownst to you, your omega shuddered and not in fear.

summary: larry knocks (y/n) off her feet, literally. later, him and sal come to apologize, bearing a gift of homemade lasagna. sal and (y/n) bond over their similar bodies. his eyes look familiar.
Tumblr media
The sound of your skateboard and the wind brushing past your ears practically deafened you, which allowed you to think in peace. Maybe you’d survive in Nockfell.
Maybe it wasnt as bad as you made it. You’d grow close to the old apartment, push through school, leave your mother as quickly as possible, and start fresh somewhere across the world. The only thing that you wouldn’t get close to is the forest surrounding Addison. It loomed over you, day and night, dewy pines poking out at you like a warning sign. Maybe mom moved here just so she could torture you with the forest. Remind you of what happened.
Loud footsteps joined the wheels of your skateboard. You looked back, and on your trail were those two kids from the apartment. The tall one’s face was almost right in yours. You let out a small yelp as your skateboard hit a rock and sent you tumbling to the ground, completely destroying your knees in the process.
“Shit!” larry yelled out in surprise as he dodged the skateboard that went right between his legs.
You quickly reached out to your head, trying to calm the searing pain pulsing through it. What the fuck just happened?
“What the fuck?” you groan. The blue haired boy, sal, grabbed your skateboard and came up close to you. pulling down his sleeves, he quickly grabbed your knees and covered them, soaking up the gushing blood.
“Larry!” sal turned around to face him. You winced as the fabric of his sweater clung to your knees. Your hands grabbed his to pull them off but you froze. They were soft and cold, almost like snow. How would it feel to hold them longer? Would you warm them up? or would they freeze you?
What the fuck?
You snapped out of your trance and moved them off your knees. You scowl at larry and pick your skateboard back up.
“Nice job, asshat.”
His face flushes at the insult and he moves back. Sally stands up and offers you his hand, but you dont need his help (obviously a lie, your entire body was aching like a scale 8 earthquake). You shove yourself up and wipe your burning palms on your jeans. With your feet back on the skateboard (it took a few tries to get up because your knees kept buckling), you flip them off and begin skating back to addison. You just wanted a nice fucking stroll alone, why were these fucks literally everywhere you went?
It’s around 12:45 now. You came home, took a bath, bandaged up your knees and took some tylenol. Mom was already in her bedroom and there were some leftover beer bottles on the coffee table, so she probably wouldnt wake up anytime soon. you quickly trashed the bottles and decided for a quick nap on the couch, since your room was… occupied. your pyjamas, for now anyway, consisted of an oversized grey ac/dc shirt and some soft-ass spandex shorts.
“finally, a fucking break from this shit.” a content sigh escaped your lips as you threw yourself onto the cold couch.
a few knocks sounded at your door.
“(y/n)? it’s uh, it’s sal. and larry.”
“fuck.”
THEY’RE LITERALLY EVERYWHERE WHAT THE FUCKKKK AGGHHH WHY CANT THEY LEAVE YOU ALONE THEY ALREADY BUSTED YOUR KNEES LIKE WHAT
“coming.” you mumbled angrily even though they couldn’t hear you.
the blinding fluorescent lights of the hallway hit you as you opened the door. along with them came the smell of freshly baked lasagna. your eyes widened for a second, before looking up at sal. he stared at you, taking in your appearance. your hair was ruffled, eyes blinking sleepily as they adjusted to the light. your shirt had ridden up and showed a bit of your stomach. he blushed as you pulled it down and glared at him, a slight tinge of red on your own cheeks.
“larry.” he nudged his friend. the brunette walked up in front of sal, holding a pan of lasagna.
“listen man, i’m sorry. i didn’t mean to fuck up your knees n shit. jus’ got excited cause of your sanity falls shirt. can we, uh, can we come in?”
Slam.
larry quickly jumped back in surprise.
“i guess that means no.”
you yelled out a quick ‘wait!’ as you cleaned up your apartment and hid your mom’s weed and other things. god, for a grown woman, she didn’t know how to clean for shit.
opening the door back up, you waved them inside.
“god, you smoke a lot.” larry coughed a bit at the smell of your apartment, which earned him a shove.
“sorry! god, sal, so mean.” he mumbled.
“s’ my mom. i only smoke outside. uh, take a seat on the couch, i’ll warm up the lasagna.” you pulled it out of larry’s hands as they both took a seat on your makeshift bed.
sal shifted. “you sleep here?” he asked, confused. maybe your room was being used as storage.
“for now. there’s some weird ghost shit going on in my room. some fucking preppy ghost woman keeps squealing when i come in.”
ghosts? you believed in ghosts? maybe they’d be able to take you on their expeditions! sal perked up at the thought of you becoming friends.
“you believe in ghosts?”
“well, i saw one, so what else could it fucking be?” you chuckled as you shoveled the now warmed up lasagna onto three plates. sal noticed and his eyes widened.
“oh, no, i- i don’t want any-” he waves his hands.
“you’re having it, i don’t care.”
larry laughs as you shove it into their hands.
“feisty, aren’t ya?” he stabs some and shoves it into his mouth. you sigh and lean back into the couch.
“you guys go to the school here, right?”
larry nods. “yeah, there’s only one school in nockfell.”
“eww, larry face, don’t chew with food in your mouth.” sally laughs. in the corner of his eyes, he thinks he can see you smile.
“yeah, we go to nockfell high. i’m assuming you’re going there too.”
“mhm. starting monday. hurry up and eat, i’m not warming it up again.” you grumble. sal doesn’t move. “god, okay, i’ll look away. i have to go clean this thing anyway.” you wave your prosthetic’s fingers.
“oh, yeah, you also have a prosthetic!” his face shifts into a child-like curiosity. it’s a face that you’ve seen before, and it makes you giggle a bit every time. you place your hand on his lap. sal does a double take and his mask raises a bit.
“you wanna touch it, don’t you. go ahead.”
“damn, sal, you get all the ladies. leave some for me.” larry chimes in, hand on his forehead in mock sadness. he chuckles.
“you gonna touch it or what?”
“uh, yeah.” sal slowly lowers his hands onto it. he traces your fingers, flexing them every once in a while. he flips your palm and looks at the graffiti ‘s’ you drew on it.
“when was this?” he looks back up at you.
“grade 10, two years ago. got bored in class and accidentally took out my sharpie instead of a dry-erase marker. god, my mom was mad.” you chuckle at the memory. she didnt let you back in the house for two days. you had to camp out in the shed, where you stored your extra food so she wouldn’t steal it.
sal hummed. “what about this one?” it was a big ‘SF’. was it for his name? of course not, she didn’t know you back then, moron. still, it warmed him up a bit.
“not for you, that’s for sure.”
“damnnn, savage!” larry put his plate down. “mind if i get more?”
“larry, we brought it for (y/n).” sal scolded.
“nah, i don’t mind. knock yourself out.” you nodded, continuing your conversation with sal.
larry trotted towards the kitchen.
larry’s point of view:
sal and (y/n) seemed to be getting along quite well. good for him, really. we might be able to coax (y/n) into our friend group. i didn’t like her at first, but i think she’s just a little stand-offish. anyway, back to the lasagna. man, i wish mom would make it more often. she only makes it for guests. where is it? oh, there. (y/n)’s going to nockfell high, right? probably should tell her about travis.
your point of view:
sal was still tracing your arm, running his pale fingers over where the prosthetic connected to your skin. the doctors could have chopped your arm off completely, up to your elbow, but you wanted to salvage as much as you could, so it stops mid-forearm.
“do you take it off often?” sal hummed. it felt a little intimate, tracing your prosthetic. it was like soothing a part of your body that was already gone. what? what was he thinking?
“mmm, i take it off every night. if i leave it on, i could get rashes ‘n shit. rashes aren’t fun. ‘m assuming you take yours off every night too.” he nods.
“i don’t like taking it off during the day. phantom limb shit, you know? it hurts a lot.” you grumble.
“got the lasagna. since you’re going to nockfell, ‘should probably tell you about travis.” larry sits down. “he’s your typical stick-up-the-ass bully. doesn’t really like sally face ‘n our crew.”
“yeah. just ignore him and you should be fine.”
“we‘ll protect you.” larry swings an arm over your shoulder.
huh? you can protect yourself. does he think you can’t? is it because of your prosthetic?
“i can do it myself, you dimwit.” you push his arm off your shoulder.
“time for you to leave.”
“woah, dude, calm down-” larry’s eyes widen in panic. he didn’t mean to offend you.
“i’m sorry!”
“i’m not hurt, just need my sleep. it’s 1:30. go on now.”
sal sets down his cold, uneaten lasagna and larry takes a quick bite out of his.
“see ya!” he mumbled, words muffled by food. you click your teeth as he walks out of your apartment and towards the elevator.
“(y/n).”
you spin around to face sal. his hand lingers on your counter.
“your knees. how are they?”
you look at his eyes through his mask. they’re light blue. like the lake that you so dreaded. like the sky that morning. like your dad’s shirt. he blinks.
“uh, f-fine. they’re fine. they should heal in a few days. time for you to go.” you grab his shoulders and shove him through the door.
“see you tomorrow?” he stumbles.
“yeah.” the door shuts with a slam and you’re filled with an overwhelming sense of dread.
oh god, not this again. your vision blurs as you try to grasp onto your breath. you can hear the blood rushing in your ears. your heart thuds like it’s going to break through your rib cage. it feels like someone is strangling you, coaxing the last breath of air from your lungs. your nails scratch at your throat desperately, your salty tears only making the marks burn more. at least the cold metal of your prosthetic cools you down a bit.
shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up. you can’t wake anyone. you bite down on your lip to suppress the strangled cries leaving your mouth. god, not the lake, please. not the forest. not the huge, dirty, rabid wolf-looking creature behind your father. not his cries. please, just make it shut up. SHUT UP.
you wake up the next morning to your alarm ringing.

St. Patrick’s night III
Tumblr media
Murphy MacManus x Reader
Summary:  You’re left alone on St. Patrick’s night, the people you were supposed to hang out with  seemingly having forgotten you, but what seemed to be an awful night turns into something completely different when you meet the MacManus twins.
Another chapter for this thing that was supposed to be a one-shot but got out of hand...
Tumblr media
The next day at work, you were once again distracted thinking about the MacManus twins. You wondered if they meant it when they’d said they’d pick you up from work that day, you were a bit worried that they wouldn’t, but you couldn’t see them lying like that…maybe they’d forget, though, or something else would come up… You knew it was better not to overthink it, though, and you tried to focus on doing your job.
It wasn’t easy, though, as you kept wondering about Murphy, and how he hadn’t said anything about having kissed you, and he hadn’t kissed you again either… You knew it was probably because he’d kissed you only because it was St. Patrick, but, what if he thought you didn’t want to kiss him? That you weren’t interested? Maybe you should have said something when he’d kissed you? You wouldn’t mind kissing him again…
You wouldn’t mind taking time to get to know each other either, see if you both wanted to go on dates or something…your cheeks heated up at the idea, feeling nervous already and it was just an idea in your head…and Murphy might not even be interested. He hadn’t said anything about it after all. Maybe you should try to gather the courage to actually ask him yourself…it sounded intimidating, though…
Focusing on your job was proving to be hard, even if you tried your best, and you couldn’t stop counting the hours until you were done, barely managing to eat your lunch. Once the clock marked five, you and your coworkers began to clean up your desks and put everything into place before gathering your own stuff and leaving.
You walked in front of a group of your coworkers, who were talking and laughing together, ignoring you, but you didn’t care anymore, you were better off without them. As you walked outside, you saw the MacManus waiting for you, and you couldn’t help your smile. Yes, you were much better with the twins as your friends than trying to socialize with the assholes you worked with.  The brothers smiled too when they saw you, approaching you to greet you.
“Hi, lass.”
“Hi, you came.” You didn’t mean to sound like you had thought they might stand you up, but you did sound a bit surprised.
“Of course, love, we told ye,” Murphy said, frowning.
“Yeah, yer a woman of little faith, lass,” Connor teased you, but he frowned when he saw your coworkers walking out of the building too, stopping at the door to chat and say goodbye to each other without even giving you a glance. “Don’t blame ye, considerin’ the kind of pricks yer surrounded with,” Connor said, didn’t seem to mind if your coworkers hear him or not…you were a bit afraid of their reaction if they did…but no, Connor was right, they were pricks.
Murphy was looking at your coworkers too, but he wasn’t frowning like Connor, instead, he smirked as his eyes filled with mischief, and you barely had time to wonder what he was up to before he’d stepped even closer to you, reaching to cup your face, and then he was kissing you.
It wasn’t as tentative and soft as the St.Patrick’s kiss, neither as brief, and you felt your brain sort of melt as butterflies seemed to flutter in your belly. Your hands found their way to Murphy’s shoulders almost by their own accord, but he didn’t seem to mind, as he placed a hand on your waist while the other kept cupping your cheek, even when he pulled back.
You could only blink at him in silence, your brain still feeling a bit numb in the best way, and Murphy smirked at you.
“Better than the St.Patrick’s kiss, love?” He asked, loud enough for your coworkers, who had gone silent, to hear. You nodded, still wordless, and Murphy’s smile went bigger.
“So…should I kiss the lass too or…” Connor said, and it was obvious that he was joking, but Murphy frowned nonetheless, scoffing as he shoved his brother, who chuckled.
“Come on, love, let’s go.” Murphy smiled at you, offering you his arm, and you felt a bit shy but hooked your arm with him, smiling bashfully when Murphy smiled at you. Connor smirked and walked to your other side, hooking his arm with yours too, and Murphy rolled his eyes. “Will ye quit?!” He complained, trying to hit his brother, and so you ducked your head.
“Hey, not fighting while I’m in the middle…” You joked, chuckling.
“Sorry, lass,” both twins apologized as you three began walking, Connor letting go of your arm.
“So…do you have plans?” You asked as you walked.
“What if we get somethin’ to eat and go to our place before goin’ to doc’s?” Connor suggested.
“We live right in front of the pub,” Murphy explained.
“Well, that’s convenient,” you chuckled. “Okay, sounds good.”
The Irish neighborhood wasn’t close to your work, but you went walking anyway. You didn’t mind, and neither did the twins, who kept arguing about what to get for dinner. Murphy wanted pizza and Connor Chinese, and both twins were trying to win you to their side, but you didn’t mind, you liked both.
“Come on, ye have to pick one,” Murphy told you. “And sure ye know pizza is better, aye?” You didn’t know how Murphy could look like trouble one second, then the next he could give such convincing puppy eyes, but you were about to cave and pick pizza even if ye were leaning more to Chinese.
“We literally had pizza yesterday,” Connor complained, rolling his eyes at his twin before looking at you. “Seriously, lass, we’d only eat pizza if it were up to him.”
“Ye weren’t complainin’ that much when ye ate a whole pizza by yerself…” Murphy grumbled.
They both looked at you expectantly, waiting for you to choose, and you tried not to give in to Murphy’s puppy eyes. “Well, if you had pizza yesterday, then I’d say it’s fair that we have Chinese today.”
“Aye!” Connor nodded, looking at his brother with a smug grin, and Murphy scoffed.
“Can’t believe ye betrayed me like this, love,” he pouted, but then he was smirking, and so you knew he didn’t mean it.
“We can have pizza any other day,” you offered, smiling.
“Aye? Ye wanna eat with us another day?” Murphy asked, grinning in that way that lighted his face in such a pretty way that gave you all the butterflies.
“Yeah, sure.” You nodded, looking down shyly. “If you wanna.”
“Sure we do, love,” Murphy said with that pretty grin and Connor nodded, smiling.
“Okay..okay, great.” You smiled bashfully, glad that it seemed they did want to eat with you any other day and hang out with you.
*
The brothers hadn’t been kidding, they did live in front of the pub, in an old building that didn’t seem quite fitting for housing… You didn’t know how you expected their place to be, but certainly not what you saw when you walked in, and you blinked as you looked around.
It was…it was illegal lofting, that for starters, you were sure of it, and the distribution was…peculiar, so to speak, especially for people not living alone, considering that there were no rooms. Not even a bathroom, there was no wall or anything at all hiding the toilet, neither the row of showers against the wall. You get that the MacManus were twins and all that but…they really did not seem to care for privacy. You really hoped that you didn’t have to pee while you were there, because you weren’t about to do it in front of them.
The place was small, and there wasn’t much there. On one side, there was a couple of mattresses on the floor, separated by a nightstand table in which you saw a couple of mugs and bottles of beer, a small table with some more empty bottles of beer and empty packages of pizza, and a couple of ashtrays full of smoked cigarettes, and some mismatched chairs around it.  Against the wall, there was a tattered sofa that seemed about to die, a small tv on top of an even smaller table, and for some reason, the fridge was between the sofa and the tv, with a lamp on top of it…peculiar, but the whole place was…peculiar.
On the other side, there was a small, old stove, an older sink, and a small worktop which surface was almost covered by bottles of booze, some still full but most empty. If you had any doubt that the boys liked to drink, it was gone by now.
You didn’t want to seem rude or shallow, or judging, or anything like that, and so you stopped looking around like that. The brothers hadn’t seemed to notice, though, or to care, they walked in and took off their rosaries, hanging them on a couple of nails on the wall next to the door, and then Connor left the Chinese takeaway on the table.
“Ye hungry, love?” Murphy asked you and you nodded, since you had barely been able to eat your lunch as you wondered if the MacManus might forget that they had made plans with you, which now sounded silly, you shouldn’t have doubted them.
“Let’s eat,” Connor said as he began to take the food containers out of the bag, the smell making your mouth water already.
You stepped closer to the table to help him with it, and your eyes landed on an open notebook under a beer bottle, spotting some drawings and doodles on it, though before you could get a closer look, Murphy snapped it, almost making the bottle fall, and he closed the notebook and threw it to one of the mattresses.
You frowned, confused, but Connor snorted. “Murph likes to get all artistic sometimes,” he said, prompting Murphy into hitting his twin’s head as he snapped at him to shut up.
“You draw those?” You asked, looking towards the notebook on the bed before looking at Murphy, who to your surprised, seemed almost shy. For how cocky and smug he seemed to look more often than not, it was strange to see him looking almost embarrassed, and you didn’t like it. You hated that you had made him feel like that.
“Yeah, he drew our tattoos in that notebook of him,” Connor said, nodding.
“Told ye to shut up,” Murphy snapped again and this time Connor was quick to stop his hands before he could hit him.
“I think that’s really nice!” You rushed to say, and you meant it, you were impressed. “Seriously, it’s great!”
“Aye?” Murphy looked at you like he thought you didn’t mean it, or even like you were trying to make fun of him, and so you nodded eagerly, smiling.  He still seemed a bit embarrassed, but he smiled at you. “Connor draws too, he tattoed all mine,” Murphy said, gesturing to his neck, and before you could say how impressive that was, Connor spoke.
“You did all mine better.” Connor shrugged, reaching to grab Murphy’s arm and frowning at the tattoed cross. “Parts of this look wonky.”
“I think it looks great!” You said, impressed. “Both his and your tattoos, it’s so impressive, seriously!”
“Aye?” Murphy asked you, his smile bigger now.
“Yes!” You nodded. “Seriously, you not only draw your tattoos but you tattoo them too?! It’s amazing! If I ever want a tattoo, I know who to ask!”
“Ye’d ask me?” Murphy asked with a smile that made you feel all funny and smile too, and you nodded.
“Sure, why not?” You shrugged, and Murphy gave you that pretty, bright smile, that made you consider if he might mind it if you kissed him again…
You barely noticed Connor as he began fumbling with the food containers again, focused as you were on Murphy and that damn smile, but when you finally looked at Connor, you noticed that he seemed amused at Murphy and you. You felt your cheeks heating up a bit, and you tried to kick your brain into working again, helping with the food.
You three decided to settle on the sofa for dinner instead of at the table, since Connor suggested that you could watch a movie, even if you weren’t sure that old thing would hold you three without falling into pieces, and so they dragged the tv in front of the sofa. Connor had a small stack of what seemed old action movies, and once again you had the final vote on what to watch, since the twins kept arguing about it, Murphy complaining that they’d seen the movie that Connor’d picked a million times already while Connor retorted that it was classic worth watching another million times.
You didn’t give it much thought, you didn’t care much and you didn’t want the food to go cold while the boys argued. Since you had sided with Connor on what to eat, this time you voted for Murphy’s choice of movie. He smiled smugly at his twin, but Connor didn’t complain much, since he liked that one too.
It was so much fun, to eat and watch the movie while the twins kept commenting on it, usually Connor saying details that you hadn’t cared to notice before, things that he liked, and Murphy just making fun of it until they both hit each other from time to time, but you knew they didn’t mean anything bad by it, so it was fun too…you didn’t know what was more entertaining, to watch the movie or to watch the MacManus…they had a way of moving in sync most of the time that was hypnotizing, even if it was just to bring food into their mouth, but when they began bickering they were so endearing and funny…you loved it.
At some point, though, once you three had finished your food, you started to find it hard to focus on the movie, as you felt Murphy’s fingers playing with your hair. You froze for a second before looking at Murphy, who was sat down between Connor and you. He smirked at you and you felt your cheeks heating up but a smile tugged at your lips too, it seemed that every time that Murphy smiled, you couldn’t help but smile too.
Murphy’s smirk went wider at that, and his fingers caressed your hair again before he casually placed his arm around your shoulders. It felt nice, to have him so close to you, almost kind of holding you, but you couldn’t stop your shyness and nerves. You tried to relax, though, you didn’t want Murphy to think that you were uncomfortable or that you wanted him to move away from you…not that there was much space left on the small, tattered sofa though.
“Ye both ain’t lookin’ at the screen, yer gonna miss the best part of the movie,” Connor complained, and you looked away from Murphy and to the tv, a bit embarrassed at being caught by Connor staring at his twin, but also part of you was kind of glad to escape Murphy’s intense glance, that made you feel shy while also making you feel twirls in your belly…
“The whole movie is the best part of the movie for ye,” Murphy scoffed, chuckling.
“It’s a damn good movie,” Connor said as he shoved his brother, pushing him closer to you…not that Murphy seemed to mind, and honestly, you didn’t either, even if it made you shy.
You still wondered what was Murphy’s deal, though, if he wanted just to mess around and have fun, kiss you sometimes, hold you while you watched tv it seemed too, and that was it, or if it meant something else, more. You still didn’t know how to bring it up, how to ask, you knew you should, so as not to obsess, thinking and wondering about it all the time, but the idea of asking him made you feel so awkward… You decided to just enjoy whatever it was, at least for that night.
Once the movie finished, and Connor’s monologue about it finished too, you three made your way to the pub. No sooner had you stepped inside, you excused yourself and rushed to the bathroom. You had been needing to go for a while now, but since there was no walls or anything hiding the toilet at the MacManus’ place, you had been waiting until you were at the pub, no matter neither of the twins had seemed to have any qualms about it while you were there.
Once you left the bathroom, you noticed that the brothers had sat down on one of the tables instead of at the bar counter, and you liked it more. They were sat down next to each other, and when you approached them, Murphy smiled at you, pushing a pint towards the seat in front of him, while Connor looked at you seeming amused.
“We ordered ye a pint, love, hope it’s okay? Murphy asked you.
“Yes, it’s perfect, thanks.” You nodded as you sat down, but you frowned at Connor, wondering why he seemed so amused, and he noticed it, smirking.
“So, lass…I was tellin’ to my brother that ye were too shy to take a piss at home and that’s why ye ran to the bathroom like that,” he said, and you almost groaned aloud, mortified and beyond embarrassed. Your cheeks burned and you almost hid your face on your hands. “See…told ye.”
Connor chuckled, looking at his brother, and you felt like hitting him in the head like Murphy sometimes did…they both seemed to enjoy embarrassing each other, and you hoped Connor, or even both, hadn’t decided to extend it to you too and try to embarrass you too.
“What…but lass, ye got nothin’ to be embarrassed about!” Murphy said, which just made you feel more embarrassed. “We all gotta piss!”
“Can we just…talk about anything else at all? Please?” You begged, feeling your face so hot that you wouldn’t be surprised if it caught fire.
The twins seemed to take pity on you, letting it go, and they began telling you about one day at work in which Murphy got himself locked inside the bathroom of the meatpacking factory. and Connor had to “throw the door open to rescue him, lass, we had to pay for it, ‘cause Murphy was an idiot,” he explained, earning a shove from Murphy.
“I ain’t an idiot, the lock was not openin’ no matter what, I promise, love,” Murphy insisted as if it was a matter of life or death.
“I believe you,” you assured him, laughing, and as the brothers began bickering again, you couldn’t help your grin looking at them, they were just so fun to be around, that soon you had forgotten your earlier embarrassment.
Unsurprisingly, the MacManus finished their drinks before you, and so Murphy went to the bar counter to order a couple more. The waitress was busy waiting tables, Murphy had been right when he told you that the pub was busier at the weekends, there was almost the double of people than you had seen before, and so the twins didn’t want to bother the waitress.
You looked at Murphy as he waited for Doc to get him the drinks, getting lost in thought again. You had tried to, but you couldn’t stop your mind from wandering to what Murphy thought of you, of this thing that seemed to be going between you and him, whatever it was…
You heard Connor chuckling and when you looked at him you felt your cheeks heating up at his amused smirk.
“Do I wanna know what are ye thinkin’ lookin’ at my brother like that…or don’t I?” He teased you, arching an eyebrow.
“Nothing,” you murmured, looking down, and judging by Connor’s chuckle, he didn’t believe you.
“He’s been all corny and givin’ ye the heart eyes since St. Patrick’s too, it’s made it easier to mess with him, gotta thank ye for that,” Connor chuckled again.
You felt as if your heart had done a summersault while butterflies decided to flutter in your belly…Murphy gave you the heart eyes? Really? Connor knew his twin, so it must be true, right? Unless Connor was just messing with you…it didn’t seem like so, though.
Connor looked at his brother, who was coming back with their drinks. “Don’t go breakin’ my brother’s heart, though, lass.” His voice let you know that he was joking, but anyway, you didn’t plan on doing that, you were more concerned about the opposite…still, the sight of Murphy’s grin as he sat down in front of you, had you smiling like an idiot again, despite the mess of feelings in your heart and the mess of thoughts in your head, despite any concern about what was going on between you and him.

Smoke Break - A Nace Fic
I’ve had about a million different Nace fanfic ideas rolling around inside my head lately, so last night I wrote one of them. I’m pretty sure this has been done before, but this is my take on the smoke break conversation Nancy mentions having with Ace in 1x01. Inspired by the fact I’m about to start rewatching the show for the third time before season 3 starts in the fall. Enjoy?
Smoke Break
The lunch rush almost did her in.
It was Nancy’s fourth day on the job at The Claw—and her fourth day of work ever—and she already wanted to quit.
Coastal Maine towns in the summer were a bitch, and Horseshoe Bay was no exception. The entire town was a tourist trap, and The Claw was the best (not to mention only) seafood restaurant for miles. Anyone visiting from outside the state just had to stop in for a lobster roll—which was mostly what Nancy served to people all day, every day. She had lost track of how many of her customers had excitedly informed her that eating a Maine lobster roll was on their bucket list.
What kind of person put eating a ridiculously overpriced lobster roll on their bucket list?
It was halfway through the exceptionally busy shift that George tapped her on the shoulder, hard—so hard, she wouldn’t be surprised if it left a bruise. “Drew,” she said, unsmiling. “Go take your fifteen.”
Nancy breathed a sigh of relief. The entire dining room was full, and there were at least five large groups of people waiting patiently outside for a table. This was the busiest she had seen it yet.
And the busiest she ever wanted to see it.
“Thanks, George,” Nancy said gratefully, earning nothing but a glare from her former classmate.
“Don’t thank me. It’s company policy. Now get your ass out of here. Your fifteen is now a fourteen.” Turning on her heel, she stormed off in the direction of Bess, one of the other newer waitresses, who appeared to be struggling with a large table of ten people that was half adults, half kids, and all chaos. It was probably going to result in a huge tip, but Nancy was glad she hadn’t been assigned to that party. She didn’t have the patience for that.
She headed for the back room and retrieved her phone from her locker before exiting out the back door. She was instantly hit with a blast of hot, humid air, and she almost contemplated going right back inside where it was nice and air conditioned. But despite it being almost intolerably hot, it was quiet outside—unlike the madhouse inside. All she could hear were the crashing waves in the water and the squawking of seagulls in the parking lot looking for dropped food, and she welcomed it.
Staring down at her phone, Nancy slowly made her way over to the lone employees-only picnic table that was inconsiderately located right next to the dumpster. She was about to sit down when a voice spoke behind her, startling her.
“Having fun yet?”
Nancy nearly dropped her phone before spinning around to see who had spoken to her.
Leaning up against the side of the building was one of The Claw’s dishwashers—Ace. She’d met him on her first day—another hectic, busy day—but hadn’t really gotten to know him yet. She hadn’t really gotten to know anyone yet. Just the way she liked it.
She’d been aware of Ace’s existence before meeting him at The Claw. They’d gone to the same high school together, although he’d been a senior when she was a freshman, so their paths never crossed. He looked different now than he had back then. He looked taller. His hair was longer. He’d filled out a little—like he spent at least a couple days a week at the gym. He was cute. No, wait. He was hot. Not really her type—he seemed like a bit of a stoner—but he was certainly easy on the eyes.
“Sorry,” he continued before she could answer his question. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“You didn’t,” Nancy said with a dismissive wave. “I was just a little startled. I didn’t know anyone else was out here.”
Ace nodded. “Yeah. George yelled at me two minutes ago to take my break.”
Nancy smirked. “You too?”
“Yup.”
“Does she yell at employees a lot?”
“All the time,” Ace said with a furrowed brow. He lifted his fingers up to his lips and it wasn’t until then that Nancy noticed he was holding onto a cigarette.
“You’re a smoker, huh?” she asked, wanting to immediately facepalm. He was holding onto a lit cigarette. Of course he was a smoker.
Ace took a long drag and shook his head as he slowly let the smoke back out of his lungs. “Nah. I only smoke when I’m feeling stressed.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. “I’ve had this same pack for two months now, and it’s still mostly full.”
Nancy arched an eyebrow. “I take it you don’t get stressed too often, then?”
“Not really,” he replied. “For the most part, I like to keep things chill.”
“So, then, what are you stressed about right now?” Nancy asked, hoping she wasn’t coming across as being too nosy.
“George yelling at me,” he deadpanned.
Nancy chuckled. “Well, with the way things are going for me with George right now, I might have to bum one of those off you sometime.”
“Anytime,” he said, dropping his cigarette to the ground and stepping on it to put it out. “Sharing is caring is my motto.”
Nancy smiled. “That’s a great motto to have. But I was mostly joking. I don’t do cigarettes.” She motioned to her chest. “Virgin lungs.”
“Well, there’s a first time for everything.”
Something about the way he said it—his voice soft and almost flirty—made Nancy pause. Although, there was no way Ace could be flirting with her. In the only four days she’d been working with him, she’d already been made very aware of his crush on Bess. George had grumbled about it under her breath when she didn’t know anyone was listening, but even if Nancy hadn’t overheard that piece of information, she would have quickly figured it out herself. The guy wasn’t exactly subtle about it.
“I probably won’t be here long enough to share too many smoke breaks with you, anyway,” Nancy said, turning her attention to her phone.
“Why is that?” he asked.
Nancy shrugged. “I just don’t think I’m cut out for this line of work.”
“What kind of work do you think you’re cut out for, then? Sleuthing?”
Nancy’s eyes snapped back up to him, narrowing suspiciously. “Why would you say that?”
“Uh, because you’re the Hero of Horseshoe Bay,” he said with a grin. “The famous Nancy Drew, girl detective.”
Nancy could feel a humiliated blush spread across her cheeks. He knew about that? Oh, right, of course he did. He’d lived in Horseshoe Bay his whole life, just like she had. And she’d made the news quite frequently growing up. She would have been shocked if he hadn’t known about that.
“You’re a pretty big celebrity around this town, you know,” Ace continued. “I’ve just been waiting for the right time to ask for your autograph.”
“Oh, is that right?” Nancy chuckled again. “I’d hold off on that request for now if I were you. Maybe I was famous as a ‘girl detective’, but I’m nothing as the girl who tanked her grades her senior year and might never get into her dream school.”
All traces of amusement left Ace’s face as he frowned. “What are you talking about?”
What was she talking about? This was the first time she had admitted it out loud to anyone. She couldn’t tell her father the truth. She couldn’t tell her friends either because those friends had already decided to move on with their lives without her. Apparently, staying behind in Horseshoe Bay to wait tables for a living instead of heading straight off to college was not sophisticated enough for them.
“I…” Nancy began but then stopped, clamping her mouth shut. She wasn’t sure she had the energy to tell that story.
Slowly, Ace made his way over to the picnic table and sat down beside her, although leaving plenty of empty space between them. He turned his head to look at her, waiting silently for her to continue.
She appreciated the fact he wasn’t trying to pressure her to elaborate. She could tell from the look on his face that he was very interested in hearing what she had to say, but he wasn’t going to force her to say it if she didn’t want to.
And, surprisingly, that made her want to.
“I…tanked my grades my senior year,” she repeated finally. “After she…after my mom died.” She lowered her gaze to her lap.
“Kate Drew,” Ace said softly. “Our guidance counselor.”
Nancy nodded.
“I liked her. I was sorry to hear about her passing.”
Inhaling a shaky breath, Nancy said, “Yeah, me too.” She paused for a moment before continuing. The death of her mother was still very raw. She still cried herself to sleep every night, hoping to wake up the next morning to find out it was all just a bad dream. “Losing her was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, and I just…I couldn’t deal. So, I gave up on all my schoolwork and I let my grades plummet. I suddenly didn’t care about trying to get into Columbia anymore or becoming an investigative journalist—which is, by the way, what I think I’m actually cut out for. I just gave up. And honestly? I don’t regret it. Even if it means I’m stuck in this town for at least the next year, getting constantly bitched out at work by the girl who hated my guts in high school.”
She paused for a beat, before sneaking a glance over at Ace. “You must think I’m pretty stupid, huh?”
Ace shook his head. “No. Not at all. Although, I’m not exactly in any position to judge, anyway. I mean, look at me. I’m three years out of high school, and I’ve been working here as a dishwasher the entire time.”
“Well, what about you?” Nancy asked. “Have you ever thought about going to college? Is there anything you want to be when you grow up?”
A small smile played at his lips as he stared down at the ground. “As a matter of fact—” he began, but then stopped and immediately wiped the smile off his face. Clearing his throat, he shrugged and said, “Not really.”
Nancy eyed him curiously. He was about to say something. But what? “Not really, huh?”
“Yeah.” The smile returned. “I don’t really care to have any life plans or aspirations right now. I’m sort of a…free spirit, I guess you could say. I just want to take things as they come.”
“A free spirit,” Nancy echoed before adding with a slight smirk, “And a deep soul.”
She wasn’t sure what exactly had inspired her to add that last part, but there was something about this guy that made her think there was a lot more to him than he was letting on.
He was a bit of a mystery.
Maybe if she stuck around long enough at this job and got to know him a little better, she could solve that mystery someday. As Nancy Drew, girl detective.
Ace turned to look at her and when his eyes met hers, she couldn’t help but notice how pretty they were, matching the color of the ocean that bordered their town. He opened his mouth to say something, but before he could get a word out the back door flew open, and George poked her head out.
“Break’s over, you two,” she barked. She didn’t wait for them to respond before retreating inside the restaurant and slamming the door shut behind her.
Both amused, Nancy and Ace simultaneously stood from the bench.
“Ready for round two?” he asked her. “If you think the lunch rush is bad, just wait until the dinner rush.”
Nancy groaned. “Can’t wait.”
“Here.” Ace reached back into his pocket, retrieved the pack of cigarettes, pulled one out, and handed it to her. “Take this.”
Hesitantly, Nancy reached up to take it from him. “I’m not going to smoke this, you know.”
“You don’t have to. Sometimes it helps just knowing it’s there if you need it.”
They began their short trek to the back door, where Ace proceeded to open it and motion for her to go in first.
“And hey,” he added, “if you do ever decide you’re ready to try it and you need a light, you know where to find me. I’ll be where the dirty dishes are.”
Another smile—this one almost too big to fit on her face—graced Nancy’s lips. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d smiled this many times in one day. It had been a long time.
“Thanks, Ace,” she said, brushing past him through the open door. “I really appreciate that.”
Ace was right—the dinner rush did turn out to be way worse than the lunch rush. George yelled at her at least three more times before her shift was over, Bess broke at least three plates and two glasses, and one kid threw up all over the floor right in front of her. And she hated to admit it, but more than once, that lone, unlit cigarette in her locker called out to her, and she was tempted to see if it would help to cut down on her own stress levels. But Ace had already left for the day, so there’d be no one there to light it for her.
But she knew he’d be there tomorrow if she needed him. And for now, anyway, that was enough.

Cabs were scary to get into during the day, but even scarier at night. Being drunk out of your wits, the weird man driving the big yellow taxi didn’t deterrent you from crawling into the back and letting him take you directly to best thing you’ve ever had in life and most definitely the weirdest.
The man at the bar meant well when he called you a cab…or was it the bad date that you just had? The alcohol running within your blood wouldn’t allow you to remember exactly who. But you did know someone had called a ride for you to get home and all you were expected to do was wait outside for them and be able to recite your address correctly.
Earlier than the expected time a yellow cab pulled up in front of you with only the driver inside. You were almost sure whoever called was for an Uber but again ,you were too far gone to comprehend much at all. Using all the strength you could gather you threw yourself into the backseat of the dark cab and took in your surroundings. It wasn’t anything unusual, a clean leather back seat that smelled like sweat and food masked in Lysol. So you shrugged it off and shut the door.
The driver didn’t speak to you once, he just started the cab and began driving. Your head was spinning so you decided to lean it up against the window and murmur incoherent nonsense into existence. As much as your indulged yourself with tonight, the memory of your date from hell would not leave your mind. The guy you met online was a weirdo, and you didn’t even want to get into the details but to it up he had a lizard with giant testicles tattooed proudly down the side of his face. The eye catching tattoo was NOT in any of his photos, you’re sure you would have remembered. You still gave him a chance thinking maybe it was a prank, but no, this man lived up to the assumptions you had. You didn’t even remember how many drinks your downed, but none of them made him anymore attractive.
“Your stop.” The cabbie announces for the first time the entire ride. His voice wasn’t unusual, he sounded like a middle aged man with a smoking addiction.
“Huh? Oh, okay.” You nod, your body realizing the care as idling before your mind did. Again, you were forcing yourself to open the door and step out.
“Have a nice night ma’am.” He calls out once more, never turning his head or even hassling you for a tip. Your drunken haze didn’t help you realize you never once gave him your address until you blinked away the blurriness a few times and realized this was a neighborhood you weren’t familiar with.
“Oh, sir this isn’t—“ But by the time you were able to speak the cab was gone. You could have sworn you had heard the loud engine running behind you but there was nothing and no one around. “Great.” Uou mutter.
Signal on your phone was nonexistent meaning you’d have to walk around this neighborhood and it’s lack of street lighting until you could pick up enough service to make a phone call. The cabbie stayed in the back of your mind. Why would he drop you off in an unfamiliar place like this? Was he sick in his head?
Eventually you were reaching close to a closed gas station and your phone picked up exactly one bar. That was enough for you to make a call, so you were stopping and dialing your Mothers number. It rang for a short time before the automated voice told you that the number could not be reached due to long distance fees.
“What the hell?” Did she go on a trip without mentioning it to you? You weren’t even sure what do now since you’d never gotten that message before, and your phone was back to being useless. So instead, you let out a whine and began walking again, this time in the opposite direction of where you came.
When it came to the street you had been dropped off at your eyes widened in surprise. Three men were fighting, well two against one was what it seemed like to you. The third guy was getting some pretty good hits in too, but he wasn’t a match. Minutes later the third guy hit the ground with a loud groan and sirens from a distance caused the other two to take off in fear.
You didn’t know why your drunk legs were carrying you toward the man but your mind was screaming objections. Just as the toe of your shoes reached him, he was picking himself up, without actually looking at you. “Ace, this is between me and— who are you?”
“Y/N.” You slut, wobbling on your legs while blinking at the man who you could now barely see. You were exhausted which could be why you didn’t fear him or anything right now.
“It’s not safe out here Y/N, go home.” He instructs, looking around to make sure the two of you were alone.
“Okay…I’m kind of lost.” You admit, leaning on the wall to support your heavy weight.
“I can tell.” He chuckles, tilting his head at you. “Where did you come from anyway?”
“A club in Seoul I think.” You nod along, agreeing with what you’d told him.
“Seoul? Where is that?” He asks, unsure if you were even stable enough to go home alone.
“Korea.” You roll your eyes. You hadn’t been in that cab long, surely Seoul wasn’t far unless this stranger was playing mind games with you.
“Never heard of it. I think you’re drunk miss.” He frowns, truly not understanding where you’d come from. “Come on, let’s find you a shelter to stay in until you sober up.”
He wrapped his arm around up shoulder but that proved to be more work than anything because your legs were no longer in use. The poor stranger had no choice but to carry you half way across town while injured just to be turned away by the women’s shelter that was full for the night.
“Now what do we do?” He asks out loud hoping you’d have even a crumb of an idea but you were out cold, head leaning against his shoulder as you snoozed away. “What are we going to do with you Miss?”
The next morning you woke up in what you could only describe as a set from a horror film. It looked like it was once an apartment but now was just the ruins of one. The bed was awfully destroyed and the room itself looked almost condemned, almost. It was obvious that someone had been taking care of it or else it would already be a pile of rubble on the ground.
Just as you were about to get up and try finding your way back home or to a pay phone someone walked in, a very familiar person. “Good, you’re awake. Now tell me who you are and how you got here.” He demands, arms crossed over his chest.
He was somewhat intimidating with his broad stature, decent height, the new and old scars marking his skin…but his features were soft like a doll no matter how hard he had been trying to toughen them. Thanks to that, you were able to speak.
“I’m not sure, I just woke up here.” You explain, looking around in confusion. He didn’t look angry but confused and you’d be confused too if you found a stranger sleeping in your home. “I’m leaving now though…do you happen to know what town this is? I think my cab brought me here by mistake.”
The cab, just thinking about it made your skin crawl. The more your sober mind put things together the less sense it made. He never asked for your address, never spoke to you, never even charged your for three ride. Who was that guy?
“I’m not asking how you got in my place, I’m asking how you got here, to my planet.” He demands once again, stepping closer and narrowing his eyes on you. “It’s impossible for anyone not from here to get through the barrier so how are you here?”
“Your planet?” You sputter in laughter. How many weird men were you going to come across in the next 24 hours? “Have you been drinking too?”
His face hardened some as he stepped closer, grabbed your arm and pulled you from the bed. He ignored your yelling for him to set you free and continued to pull you outside.
“Let go of— what the hell…” You gasp, eyes squinting from how bright it was, unusually bright for anytime of the day. “Why is it so bright?”
The man let go of you and went back inside, jogging back a few seconds later to hand you a pair of sunglasses. Slipping them over your eyes you were able to see, it was still bright but not unbearable. Things were different, but only slightly. The birds didn’t have feathers, but fur which made them look like tailless rats with beaks. The people you could see were just about the same as anyone you’d ever seen. The houses and buildings were just like the mans, broken and only getting worse, and you swore every so often you could see the wind. There were no clouds above or a sun, just brightness over you.
“Where am I?” You ask out loud, not intending to receive an answer but being grateful when the man behind you spoke up.
“Helios.” He answers in a know it all manner. “Now tell me how you got here and where you came from.”
“I’m from Earth…Seoul, Korea.” You whimper, only now starting to panic. How did you get to wherever the hell ‘Helios’ is??? “I’m not sure how I got here, I went drinking with friends last night, I got in a cab with a creepy driver and now? Now I have no clue but I want to go home.”
“I want you to go home too. You aren’t made for this planet, you’ll die before the week is up, I’m sure of it. It’s too dangerous.” He hums out loud, ignoring the surprised gasped slipping past your lips.
“Excuse me?” You ask a bit too loud because he was clamping his bandaged hand over your mouth and pulling you inside, carefully watching his surroundings as he did so. Once you were back in what you assumed was the safety of his bedroom he removed his hand.
“You want to be found don’t you? They never taught us about how loud you people from Earth were.” He hisses, covering what was supposed to be a window with a piece of plywood.
“I’m sorry but where I come from, we don’t take a threat to our lives so calmly.” You defend yourself with your hands in the air.
“Then why did you come here?” He asks again, keeping his arms crossed. As composed as he made himself look you could see the stress and confusion on his face. “How did you even get through the barrier?”
“What barrier?” You ask, on the verge of tears. Your poor arm was sore from how many times you’d pinched it since you’d come to, hoping this was an alcohol induced nightmare and you’d wake up.
“The one you came through, people from Earth call it, uh…, what do you call it?” He grumbles, kneeling beside his bed and pulling out a dresser drawer full of papers and books. He flipped through one of said books before grinning proudly. “You people call it the sun.”
“The sun? Do you know how hot the sun is? It’s impossible for someone like us to get even close to it, let alone survive on it.” You laugh directly in his face, pulling on your hair and collapsing onto the bed.
“Only the barrier is hot and it’s too keep everyone who isn’t supposed to be here, out. Like you. So how did you get here? I need to know so I can report it and fix it and finally get some respect and not constantly worry about them finding me and trying to kill me.” He started off strong but by the end of his rant his voice was wavering and you could sense the sorrow.
“Who wants to kill you?” You ask. He visibly tenses and glances at you for a moment as if he was about to spill everything to you. But he doesn’t.
“It doesn’t matter. What matters is where you got in at. There has to be a weak spot. You are the first reported person from Earth to make it here, ever! So tell me how you did it.” He pleads, no longer talking like he’d rip your head off and chew on it. He was desperate.
“I already told you, I don’t know. The last thing I can remember was being in the cab and trying not to throw my lunch up in his back seat.” You frown. You did feel bad and a little afraid…okay, a lot afraid. Both of your lives were clearly on the line here, but who had more to lose?
He stared at you for several moments, really stared and contemplated what you’d said until he was sure you were being honest. With a heavy sigh of defeat he fell to his knees beside you and laid his forehead against the bed.
“I’m sure there’s a book or something somewhere that can tell us how you got here and how to send you back.” He assures you…while also trying to calm himself down. “But in the meantime we have to disguise you and keep you hidden.”
“Won’t I just blend in as I am?” You quirk. He scrunched his features and shook his head in disagreement.
“Absolutely not. Look at me, do I look like I would blend in on Earth?” He asks, standing tall again and gesturing to his clothes. “I have two outfits and they’re both very similar.
You looked him over and you had to agree, he wouldn’t blend very well on Earth unless he was one of the many unfortunate souls who lived on the streets. And looking down at the dress you’d gone out in, you wouldn’t blend in here.
“Fine, what do you want me to do? Stay here?”
He shook his head and chewed on the skin of his lip. “No, they’ll search here eventually. We need to pack up and keep moving.”
He left you alone in the room for a while before coming back and throwing a pile of clothes on you that you won’t lie, smelled like sweat and dirt. It was disgusting but judging by the small smile he had, it was your new wardrobe.
“I’m going to get my stuff together, you change into those.” He leaves no room for argument as he leaves and you have no other choice but to strip yourself of your nice dress and change into the torn clothes you were handed. He was a large guy, significantly bigger than you so the pants you were handed were having to be held up. The shirt was baggy and showed off portions of your skin that you otherwise would have wanted to keep hidden from view.
You poked your head out of the room and listened to the sound of murmuring and things moving until you found him digging up a bag form the ground. “These are too big.”
He turned to his head and rolled his eyes again, standing up and tearing down a rope from the ceiling. Unlike any same gentleman you’d ever met he pulled your toward him by the waist of his pants and started to use the rope as a belt. In any other situation like this you’d be foaming at the mouth and ready to go if you know what I mean, but this was strictly and only to keep you from being half naked. He loooed you over once more and shook his head, kneeling and taking a rusted knife from his boot to tear the legs of the pants unevenly, making it easier for you to walk. “I don’t have shoes for you, so we’ll find some, until then we’ll find an easier path for your feet.”
You nodded and watched him, move away again, grabbing the bag he dug up and walk to the bedroom again to stuff it with the things from the drawer. You weren’t sure of anything going on around you other than the fact that you needed to stay with him and he’d keep you’d safe for now, or at least that’s what you had hoped would happen. You had to hope.
“What do I call you?” You ask once he was pulling you out the back of the rubble towards the tree line.
“Jin.” He answers quickly, looking around frantically and making you crouch with him through the tall brush. “And you’ll be my burden until I can either send you home or bury you.”
“Or just called me, Y/N, and don’t bury me?”
“I’ll do my best now stay low, stay quiet, watch your step, pay close attention to all your senses and follow me.”
And you did.

When I get my laptop back I’ll put a cut at the beginning so it’s not so terribly long. I also want to make a part 2 of this and maybe more but I can’t guarantee they’ll be soon. (GIF found on Pinterest) 📌

Gratsu Week 2021 Prompt(s): Impress, Smile, Smokey Pairing: Gray x Natsu
AO3
Summary: Natsu had to repress a loud snort when he caught his first glimpse of his neighbor. The guy was dressed in only a pair of black boxers, his fair skin slick and shiny from the thick layer of sunblock he had applied. His back had white streaks and missed spots all over it from where he hadn’t been able to distribute it evenly, and some of the lotion was sticking to the dark hairs on his neck.
But the absolute worst thing of all was that he obviously had no idea how to use a barbeque properly.
0-0 Summer was arguably the worst time to be moving. Who in their right mind would want to spend all day inside unpacking boxes when it was 90 degrees outside? Definitely not Natsu, and yet here he was, dragging another box full of stuff up the stairs in his new home. He was grateful for his friends, who had been there when he’d gotten the key and helped him clean the house, paint some walls, and install the larger pieces of furniture. But now that there was only the smaller clutter left, he was on his own, and he was missing out on all the summer fun. His friends were all enjoying themselves without him; spending their free time at the beach or the pool, barbecuing in their yards, raiding the ice cream parlor… “Soon…” Natsu sighed to himself. Soon, he could join them again. He just had a few more boxes filled with necessary items to go.
He’d already unpacked the ones filled with kitchen utensils and Happy’s stuff. All that was left were his toiletries and a few clothes. He’d sort through the rest of his crap bit by bit, one or two boxes every night until he was done. That way, he could still get the most out of the vacation days he'd pulled out for moving. He opened the box he’d brought upstairs with him and groaned; of course, he’d grabbed the wrong one. Instead of towels and shower products, he was looking at some of the housewarming gifts he’d gotten. A key hanger from Lucy, because he was always losing his keys. A baking set from Erza, which Natsu had to admit was the most optimistic gift he’d ever gotten, and a cute houseplant from Wendy, carefully wrapped up in brown paper, with wet paper towels to keep the soil moist.
There were a few more small gifts, but Natsu’s attention was drawn to the flat package at the bottom. More specifically, to the image that was on it, giving away what was inside: a bright pink flamingo kiddie pool. “So you can have a pool in your backyard!” Sting had grinned when Natsu unwrapped the gift. It was obviously a gag gift, and at the time, Natsu had seen the humor in it. He’d even joked that he’d call Sting for a pool party once he was all settled in, but right now, it only fueled his longing to do something fun. Actually… Screw unpacking, he’d do that later. One look through the window, at the bright blue sky and the burning sun, was all it took to finalize his decision. He picked up the box and took it downstairs again, quickly watering the plant before it could die in the summer heat, and putting it on a windowsill. Leaving the rest of the box’s contents for now, he took out the inflatable pool and started digging through one of the other boxes in search of his swim trunks.
He’d done enough for today. He was going to sit in his backyard and enjoy his stupid pool, damn it. Once he’d changed into his swimwear, he applied a thin layer of sunblock he’d found during his search for a towel. He went outside with the pool under his arm, sticking his foot out when he slipped through the sliding door to keep Happy from sneaking outside.
“Sorry buddy, you can’t go out yet,” he apologized, knowing that it was for the best.
They'd only moved in a few days ago, and Happy needed to get used to his new home. If he were to run away, he'd get lost trying to find his way back to their old apartment, and the last thing Natsu wanted was to end up like Rogue, who had spent all night frantically searching for Frosch when he had just moved in with Sting and failed to shut the front door behind him fast enough. Still, Natsu couldn’t help but feel guilty at the sight of Happy pawing at him from behind the glass. Maybe he could get him a cat leash tomorrow, so he could at least explore the backyard safely. One thing was for sure, he’d definitely give him some of his favorite fish treats to make up for a few hours of sitting alone inside. With that in mind, he smiled and took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh summer air and the delicious smell that came along with it. It was one of his favorites, and he instantly recognized it. One of his neighbors was grilling in his backyard. Too curious for his own good, Natsu followed the scent. His nose told him it was coming from the house to his left, from the backyard that was only separated from his by a tall wooden fence. Tall, but not tall enough to keep Natsu away. He was just able to peek over the top if he stood on his tippy toes.
He wanted to get an idea of who was living next to him, that’s all. Okay, and maybe he wanted to live through them a little as they indulged in one of his all-time favorite summer activities. \
Natsu had to repress a loud snort when he caught his first glimpse of his neighbor. “You know, your food is going to cook more evenly and taste a lot better if you close the lid,” Natsu suggested, bursting out in laughter when the guy jumped and almost dropped his tongs. “Idiot!” He whirled around and glared at Natsu, waving the tongs in the air as he stomped closer. Damn! This guy was actually pretty cute when he was mad.
"I almost burned myself. What were you thinking?!"
"That you weren't doing those ribs the justice they deserve," Natsu retorted, frustration rising within him once he managed to tear his eyes away from his half-naked neighbor and focus back on the grill. All that delicious aroma-filled smoke that would've added so much flavor to that gorgeous meat was getting away!
It was a fucking crime.
"Pay attention to what you were doing, you jackass! You gotta flip them over!"
The guy quickly returned to his grill to tend to his ribs, cursing as he fumbled with the tongs while trying to keep a safe distance between the searing heat of the barbecue and his own bare ribs.
"Man, you really suck at this," Natsu couldn't resist pointing out.
"Oh, and I suppose _you _could do better?"
In all honesty, Natsu was a terrible cook. He lacked the ability to multitask in the kitchen, always made an enormous mess, and often combined ingredients that his friends insisted should never be combined.
However, cooking and grilling were two completely different things to him. His dad had taught him how to cook meat on an open fire or a makeshift grill during camping trips since he was little, and he had it down to a fine art by now.
"You're damn right I can," he scoffed, taking the question as a challenge and being kind enough to climb over the fence and invite himself to his neighbor's backyard so he could show him how it was done.
"What are you doing?!"
"Saving your meat, of course! Move over."
Too stunned by what was happening, the guy didn't protest when Natsu snatched away the tongs. He just watched with his mouth open as Natsu flipped the ribs and set the grate to a higher level, making sure they'd cook slower. And much to Natsu’s amusement, it wasn't just the grill he was staring at.
Satisfied with his intervention, Natsu closed the lid and stepped back. "There, that should do it!" he grinned, putting the tongs down on a plate on the nearby table so he could hold out his hand in greeting. "I'm Natsu, by the way. I just moved here last Wednesday."
"... Gray," his neighbor replied, frowning warily but still accepting Natsu's hand and shaking it briefly. "Do you always stick your nose into other people's business like that?"
“Just wait, you’ll be thanking me soon enough.” Natsu said, amused by his neighbor's grumpy tone. “Anyway, you should be fine as long as you leave the lid closed for about an hour.”
“An hour?” Gray complained, “I thought grilling was supposed to be faster.”
“I mean, do you want fast, or do you want good?” Natsu drawled suggestively. He wasn’t sure if it was the beautiful weather or just the high he felt from having had a hot guy so obviously checking him out because normally he wasn’t much of a flirt, but he felt the urge to test the waters. “Cause I could show you both.”
Gray surprised him by laughing heartily at his innuendo. “There is seriously nothing subtle about you, is there?”
“Nope.” Natsu agreed and laughed along. “Well, it was nice to meet you. I’ll leave you to your grilling, gotta go set up my pool.”
He climbed the fence to get back into his yard, hearing Gray yell behind him. “You’re going to get yourself killed. Just use the gate next time.”
“But then, how could I show you my best asset?” Natsu retorted once he was safely over, chuckling as Gray muttered something he couldn’t quite make out. He wasn’t too worried, though. After all Gray had said next time.
0-0
Gray looked back at the grill, already tempted to open the lid and check on the ribs. What was he supposed to do for an hour? He’d mowed the grass earlier, and he didn’t feel comfortable staying inside while the grill was going.
The sun felt overly hot on his skin and he found shelter under a tree in his backyard. Playing on his phone had netted him ten minutes of entertainment and two group conversations he wasn’t all that interested in.
Maybe Natsu did know what he was talking about because the smell of the ribs cooking was making his mouth water in ravenous anticipation. Thinking about his new neighbor brought a smile to his face, especially since he heard odd noises coming from the other side of the fence. Didn’t he say something about a pool?
With all this time to kill, maybe he should go return the favor and see what he was up to.
With that in mind, Gray walked over to the fence and peered over it, unable to hold back a snort when he saw Natsu sitting on the ground and puffing air into a pink flamingo-shaped pool.
"Wow, I guess you really are full of hot air."
Natsu looked up at him, flashing that grin Gray was quickly developing a weak spot for. "So you think I'm hot?"
Yes, he sure as hell did, but he wasn’t about to give Natsu the satisfaction of saying so. At least... not yet.
“I think you’re having an awfully hard time blowing, which is… disappointing.”
"Huh. Never had any complaints before." Natsu shrugged, returning his attention to blowing air into the flamingo.
“Why don’t you let me show you how it’s done?” Gray said, feeling confident.
God knows he’d blown up a ton of these things for his brother’s kid. He’d quickly learned there was a little trick to it. You had to squeeze the valve as you blew into it or the air wouldn’t get in properly. Clearly, his hot dumbass of a neighbor didn't get that.
“You want to show me how well you blow?” Natsu tilted his head, looking amused by Gray’s suggestion. “How can I say no to that?”
Gray let himself into Natsu’s backyard, using the gate that connected their properties, like a normal person, and grabbed the pool away from Natsu. Using his trick, he quickly filled both rings of the pool.
“Color me impressed.” Natsu whistled in appreciation once Gray set the pool down on the grass. He filled it with water from the hose, which he oh so charmingly put between his legs, giggling to himself as he swung it around.
How the guy could go from flirting to acting like a five-year-old within the blink of an eye was beyond Gray, but he had to admit that it was oddly endearing.
Natsu jumped in with both feet as soon as the pool was filled, watching with glee as water sloshed out onto the grass from his efforts. He sat down, stretching his legs out in front of him, and immediately propped his arms around the pool’s rim.
“That feels so much better!” Natsu moaned happily.
Now that Natsu was inside it, Gray couldn't help but notice that the pool could fit two people, albeit a little snugly considering their size. And though normally he wouldn't be caught dead in one of these things- especially a pink flamingo one- it was a very hot day, and Natsu’s yard was a lot shadier than his.
"You want in?" Natsu asked, his lips stretching into a mischievous smile.
Gray’s eyes were drawn to the slightly pointy canines, finding them incredibly sexy, and he immediately wondered what kissing that mouth would feel like as Natsu patted the empty spot next to him invitingly.
What had gotten into him? He’d just met the guy, knew next to nothing about him, yet here he was acting like a hormone driven teenager. It wasn’t like him at all, but he couldn’t deny the chemistry that sizzled between them, so palpable he could almost touch it.
Besides, what was wrong with having a little fun? It was summer, and he had been in a bit of a dry spell for months.
That thought decided him.
“I suppose I could join you for a bit.”
He had just stepped one foot inside the pool when, to his surprise, Natsu stopped him. “Hang on a minute. I didn’t say you could come in. I only asked if you wanted to.”
“If you want in-” Natsu winked at him. “It’s gonna cost ya.”
“Cost me?” Gray sputtered in protest. “You can’t be serious.”
“Dead serious. I will be more than happy to share my pool with you on this incredibly hot day, but only if you share some of those ribs with me.”
Gray had already been planning on doing that, but it was infinitely more fun to make Natsu work for it.
“I don’t know,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck, which only netted him greasy fingers from the sunblock he’d slathered on earlier. “It seems to me like you’re getting the better end of the deal here. This is just a kiddie pool after all.”
“Alright, you drive a hard bargain, but I can respect that. How about this then? I’ll throw in some of my world famous special sauce.”
“World famous?” Gray scoffed, “It’s probably just something you picked up at the grocery store, but… okay, I’ll bite.”
“You promise?” Natsu gave him a cheeky smirk, one that ignited a need in Gray to get in that damn pool right the hell now and show him what he intended to do.
“You’ve got yourself a deal,” Gray said. “Just don’t complain if it ends up being more than you bargained for.”
Gray was so determined to get in there that he completely forgot he was already partly in the pool, and tripped over the edge when he tried to step in. He caught himself with his hands but still ended up splashing Natsu, not to mention had the wind yanked out of his sails.
He looked up to see the damage. The water had darkened Natsu’s pink hair and flattened it against his face, softening his features and somehow making the bastard look even more attractive. Gray watched in rapt fascination as a drop of water traveled from Natsu’s cheek, joining others on its way down his neck and over his chest until rejoining the rest of the water at waist level.
“You’re right,” Natsu laughed loudly, slicking his hair back and away from his face. “That was definitely more than I bargained for. Nice entrance, by the way.”
Gray was utterly mortified, and he scrambled to sit down, desperately trying to come up with a witty comeback, but before he could say a word, Natsu had already splashed him.
“There you go. No need to make that face. It’s a pool. We were going to get wet, eventually.” Natsu shrugged, his expression gradually changing to distaste as he looked at the water.
“Dude, what did you use for sunblock, SPF lard?”
“I burn easily!” Gray protested, smoothing out the bits of sunblock he could see on his skin.
“Yeah? Then maybe you should actually get it on all of your skin. Turn around.”
“It’s hard to reach back there! Besides, you just want an excuse to get your hands on me,” he argued, but did as he was told anyway, turning his back to Natsu.
“Yeah, that’s the idea. Are you complaining?”
Gray pouted but remained silent.
“That’s what I thought.”
It was hard to miss the smug tone in his voice.
Natsu’s hands spread the globs of lotion evenly across his back, occasionally stopping to knead on one of his muscles and then concentrating on his shoulders. Gray closed his eyes, biting his lip so as not to let on how much he was enjoying it. If this was what he got in exchange for some barbecued ribs, he'd love to know what other types of food Natsu liked.
“There you go.” Natsu said, giving his shoulders one last squeeze. “You can turn around now. It should be safe for you to walk in daylight again.”
Gray turned just in time to see Natsu lean back into his previous position.
“Are you implying I'm some sort of vampire? Cause I’m not the one with the pointy teeth.”
“No, but you are the one who offered to bite me.”
“True.” Gray laughed, and not wanting to lose the mood, he made his move, adjusting from a sitting position to a half straddle. He leaned in, close enough that he could feel the slight puff of Natsu’s breaths on his face as he murmured, “I can still make that happen.”
“You talk too much.” Natsu said just as quietly, peering into his eyes for a split second before closing his eyes and bridging the distance between them.
Gray hadn’t expected Natsu’s body to feel so warm against his, especially considering they were both wet from the pool water, and he instinctively pulled him closer. As arousing as the kiss was, and Natsu sucking on his tongue was definitely doing things to him, he realized he had no urge to push for more.
That should have been his first warning.
But he wasn’t really thinking about anything. His world had narrowed down to sensations. The torrid heat of Natsu’s mouth, the sharp sting of teeth nibbling on his lips, and the tingling pleasure of his hair being tugged, coupled with the sounds they were both making. Needy moans that would have embarrassed him if Natsu hadn’t sounded the same.
Gray liked it all a little too much. Already, the thought of separating filled him with a sense of dread. And perhaps that should have been his second warning.
He was busy running his hands up and down Natsu’s back when he felt him let go of his hair. His hands trailed down to his chest, but no lower, and he pulled away, leaving Gray to chase after him. Confused and more than a little disappointed, Gray opened his eyes. Natsu sat perfectly still, his eyes slightly widening as he sniffed the air. “THE RIBS!!!” Oh crap! He’d forgotten all about the ribs!
“Go open the lid,” Natsu urged, scrambling to get up and out of the pool. “I’ll be there in a few minutes with the sauce.”
Gray watched Natsu enter his house and then hurried over to his yard. The food smelled even better than before and when he opened the lid and poked the ribs with the tongs; he saw they were indeed done, the meat tender and ready to fall off the bone. Rather than stand around waiting awkwardly, he grabbed two beers from his fridge along with plates, napkins and utensils to bring outside.
He opened the sliding door that led to his backyard and found Natsu brushing sauce onto the ribs from an unmarked blue bottle. There was a content smile on his face as he worked away, and Gray felt a flutter in his stomach at the sight.
Shit!
He’d never been one for one-night stands, so why had he thought he’d just be able to go along this time? Because Natsu was hot and seemed willing?
Gray wanted to know more about him, but he wasn’t sure if Natsu felt the same way or if this was just a game he liked to play. What would happen if he played along to its inevitable conclusion? Would that be the end of it? The two of them- probably awkwardly- moving on as just neighbors who happened to have hooked up?
Was it wrong of him to want more?
Natsu looked up then, waving at him and gesturing him over. His smile widened when he noticed the beer bottles Gray was holding.
“Ooh, beer wasn’t part of the deal! I must have kissed you real good!” Natsu teased, accepting the bottle and easing some of the uncertainty Gray had felt about whether things would turn awkward after their make-out session in the pool.
“You’ll notice this is only domestic beer, so I wouldn’t get too full of myself if I were you.” Gray retorted, still playing along.
“Meh, beer is beer, and it goes great with ribs.”
“I’m going to pretend you didn’t just say that.”
The back and forth was nice, but Gray was itching to ask what was really on his mind.
Can I keep you? Or will you run off after the next pretty face that strikes your fancy?
The lid of the barbecue closed again, and Natsu walked over. “They should be ready in about five more minutes.”
He clinked bottles with him and took a swig. Gray followed suit and decided to just go for it. He’d rather know what to expect than hope for something that wasn’t meant to be.
“Hey, can I ask you something?” he blurted out, sounding a bit more eager than he would have liked.
“Sure, shoot.”
Natsu gave no sign he knew what was coming, or at least that’s what his relaxed posture seemed to broadcast.
“Do you do this kind of thing often?”
“Moving? God, no, I hate it with a passion. Might as well bury me here cause I’m never doing it again.”
“No,” Gray frowned. “That’s not what I meant.”
“I know.” Natsu mock sighed, “I’m just trying to think of an answer that won’t go to your head.”
“What?” Gray didn’t know what to make of that answer. Was he trying to find a way to let him down gently?
“No, I don’t do this type of thing often.” Natsu admitted, meeting Gray’s eyes and holding his gaze. “Look, you’re hot and turned out to be fun to mess with, so I figured there was no harm in seeing where that led. But I’m not expecting anything if that’s what you’re worried about.”
Gray wanted to ask if that meant that he’d like to date, but to his chagrin, all that came out of his mouth was, “You think I’m hot?”
“See?” Natsu said, sounding amused. “What’d I tell you? Right to your head!”
He put his beer bottle down on the table and traded it in for the tongs and the plates before hurrying back to the grill to check on their food. Satisfied, he turned it off and heaped a large serving of ribs onto each plate.
Gray followed him to the table, only then noticing the sliced watermelon Natsu must have brought with him from his house. He bit into one to buy himself some time to organize his thoughts.
Next to him, Natsu had already begun to dig in, messily devouring the ribs, stopping only long enough to take a sip from his beer. Gray shrugged and did the same. It wasn’t like his table manners were anything to write home about, either. The moment the meat from the ribs touched his tongue, his taste buds were assaulted with flavor. Sweet, salty, spicy… all blending together in perfect harmony. It was by far the best ribs Gray had ever tasted. He could hardly believe they’d come off his grill. He glanced at Natsu admiringly. Not that he noticed, focused as he was on his plate.
“So, what other things can you make?”
Natsu looked up at his question. There was a glob of sauce at the corner of his mouth, driving Gray all sorts of crazy with the urge to kiss it off him, but he held strong.
For now.
“Sorry to disappoint you, but this is it. I can’t cook worth a damn.”
“That’s too bad.” Gray tried but failed to suppress a smile. “Guess I’ll just have to show you all the best places to eat around here, then. You busy tomorrow night?”
Natsu shook his head, breaking into a smile so blinding it wiped every single thought out of Gray’s head. Save one.
"Nope, I'm all yours," Natsu answered after what looked like a brief moment of contemplation.
Gray sure as hell liked the sound of that.
“There’s just one thing…”
Natsu tilted his head and scrunched up his nose in silent question, which was just perfect.
“You’ve got a little something there,” Gray said, leaning in and licking the sauce off before claiming Natsu’s lips hungrily.
The kiss tasted like sauce and beer, but most of all, it tasted like more. And more was definitely bound to follow soon, tomorrow night, and many more days after.
Gray could feel it.

Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (Belle) Novel | English Translation | Chapter 3
Tumblr media
**This is a machine translation. I put it together by extracting text page-by-page from a .pdf version of the Japanese novel, and running it through Google translate. I have only minorly edited some of the more confusing lines to make it more read-able. It is still a very rough translation, but it’s good enough to understand what’s going on. If there is anyone out there who wants to properly translate the novel, I am more than happy to edit it, if you’ll contact me.**

Chapter 3: Memory
"Mother."
"What is it, Suzu?"
When I called, my mother turned around and replied.
Eleven years ago. The house was still new. There was no garage yet, and potted flowers were lined up all over the garden. "Do not cut my hair."
I told her that and ran down the slope in front of my house. Mom walked down the stairs opposite her, resting her hand on her waist and waiting. I ran away in the opposite direction, bouncing, saying that I would never let my hair be cut. But I was taken back without a hitch. She was seated on a bench in the garden and dressed in a haircut cape. “I’m going to make you look cute, Suzu.” After cutting my hair, I don't like the tingling of my hair. She shook her legs and sharpened her lips. But when she held the scissors without hesitation, she cut my hair all at once. "Because you’re going to be an elementary school student," I hope the hair on both sides doesn't stick to my shoulders. The bangs were far above the eyebrows. Even when I went to school, my neck was tingling for a while.
I played a lot with my mother. I took a sumo wrestling on the lawn of the riverbed in the evening. I pushed her by force and my mother rolled on the grass. I won, I laughed happily. Mother also laughed. I asked why? Won’t she cry if she loses? Mom shook her head. “I'm glad that the weak Suzu has become stronger.” Dad was laughing while lying on the grass. My mother often made salted seared meat. She lightly sprinkles salt and roasts the bonito stabbed on a gold skewer from her lenticel over an open flame on the stove. I was staring from the top of the chair. Since the fat drips, the microwave oven will not get dirty if you bake it while sucking it with cooking paper. When it gets burnt, dip it in ice water to cool it, and then drain it. It was a style. So as a kid, I had a hard time holding a thick piece of salted meat with chopsticks, and I had a hard time putting it in my mouth. Mom was waiting for dad's return, holding a mug and watching my struggle.
My dad was a salaryman at that time, and he wore a tie and went out to the city every day. Perhaps because of that, we had some money in our house in the old days. Mother bought a state-of-the-art smartphone at the time. I decided to try out the performance of the on-board camera, and on dad's lap, I pointed my smartphone at my mom. I asked dad to help put mom in the frame and pressed the shutter. She is dressed in white.
The smiling mother, she was beautiful. The photo of her was printed on paper and is still at the house. I was a cheerful child running around, unlike now. I definitely liked playing outside rather than inside the house. If there were trees, I climbed, if there were leaves, I tore them, and if there were insects, I chased them. But it didn't burn in the sun. I must have been such a constitution. Instead, my face is freckled.
I was often injured. My knee was also full of scratches. In the woods, on the riverbed, on the slope in front of my house, I often stumbled and fell. My mother ran up in a hurry and she hugged me tightly, crying in pain. Mysteriously, it hurts somewhere. That's when I was happy. I don't know how many times I fell because I ran around vigorously and wanted mother to hug me. Every time mother rushed in as if it was a big deal for her daughter and worried. Every day was like summer vacation. I clung to mother doing the laundry and cleaning and played. After lunch, she opened the tatami mat, laid a summer futon on the tatami mats, and we took a nap together. The smoke of the mosquito coil was rising slowly. When I woke up, most of the time, I couldn't see my mother sleeping next to me, and she was busy doing housework. In retrospect, she never been told me that she is busy. She was always with me when I asked for it. Since my house was in the mountains, I rarely went out to eat somewhere, and instead my mother cooked any kind of food. One day she saw it in a picture book, and she said she wanted to eat yakitori. She had never eaten it before. My mother made yakitori by sticking chicken on skewers one by one. For the first time in my life, I saw yakitori with the naked eye. I didn't know how to eat it, so I couldn't do well by chewing the meat and removing it from the skewers. Dad and mom were staring at me. Never missing what her daughter experiences for the first time in her life. The place where we, who live in the mountains, go out to play is not an amusement park or a shopping mall, but a campsite further in the mountains from our house.
On a sunny summer day, my mom and I wore a wide-brimmed hat and crossed the subsidence bridge. Dad was carrying a lot of camping equipment. The water crystal pool in the depths of the Yasui Valley was a breathtaking blue color even for us living in the area. The water is so transparent that you can clearly see your shadow on the bottom of the river. I feel a little scared as if I were floating in the air. My mother was an advanced swimmer. She boasted that her mother, who was once a local kid, swam like a kappa every day in the summer. She knew all about the fun of the river. At the same time, she never let her swim in dangerous places on dangerous days. Mom wraps around me, floating. She dived into the water to show her off her skills. Still picked up by her, I became anxious and called out. “Mom, don't go.” But mom, she swam in the blue water, as if she couldn't hear me.
One evening, I was playing with my mother's smartphone and saw a strange app. I put it on. When you launch the app, you'll see white and black horizontal stripes lined up. I pointed to what this was and asked my dad who was next to me. Dad looked it and twisted his neck, calling mother, who was preparing dinner. After dinner, mother's hand fixed the smartphone I was holding vertically. I laid it down and found it to be a piano keyboard. As prompted, I pressed one of the keys. There was a "do" sound. I looked at my mother's face. My mother also saw my face, saying that she had come out. It's mom’s music production app. Only then did I look around my mother's room and notice. Old records, cassette tapes, and CDs are lined up on the shelves to the end. And if you set them on a record player or cassette deck and pass them through an amplifier, music will be played from the left and right speakers. The collection was a brilliant one that accurately captured the main points of the history of classical, jazz and rock. I didn’t know at the time, the value and meaning of such a lineup being packed in a room at the end of the world.
In that room, I pressed the keys of the app one after another and recorded. When played, each sound sounds in the order in which they are arranged. Even if you enter an insane scale, it will play back in a lawful manner. I was so happy that I bounced on my chair. My mother was laughing too. Warm incandescent light was illuminating us. After that, I was crazy about this app. I had my mother lend me a smartphone and I was playing around with it day, night and morning. The operation was intuitive and easy to use. There were words that I couldn’t read because it wasn’t a children's app. And there were many functions I didn't understand. But I was absorbed in that kind of thing. I was completely absorbed in the exciting new experience of writing songs. I composed a number of songs and previewed them in front of my mother. The mother who finished listening gave me advice in short words each time. If you do xxx, it will be better, or the trick is to do xxx. She sometimes took out some of the records in the collection and listened to them for reference. My mother is neither a musician nor a composer.
Tumblr media
I think each piece of advice is accurate even if I look back on it now. Over and over again, she listened to my melody, and she said she noticed something, and she sang herself to make sure it was. When I asked, she said it wasn't bad. She said she was smirking at me as she said. I put the sound in a place that I wouldn't normally put it. I'm sure this song was a failure, and all the work I've done so far will be ruined. But as it gradually takes shape, it seems strangely cohesive, she said. I felt as happy as I wanted to. I'm sure it's my parents' favor, but even if my mother added, I was happy. For me, I'm not making it with the intention of letting someone else listen to it. It would have been nice if only my mother could listen to it. My mother sings along with the song I typed in. Take the tempo with her right hand and sing gently. The voice of mother, who was also a member of the chorus made by her friends, echoed and was transparent.
She listened to my weird songs many times. I was happy and sang along with it. Anyway, it’s a song that is as nice as my mother.
I couldn't. Happy memories of me and mother suddenly end here. And that August has come. After this, all I have is a painful, painful memory. The voice of a little girl crying and crying echoed in the riverbank. A girl was left alone on a sandbar. Is she 4 or 5 years old? She looked smaller than I was. It was so sunny just a while ago, but I noticed it wasn't a blue sky, and it was covered with overcast clouds. The beautiful and calm river was cloudy, flooded, driftwood-filled, and surprisingly fast. I can imagine that it is raining heavily upstream. Before this happened, there were people happily making noise on the opposite bank when the flow was still transparent. They are now staring at the girl on this shore. She wore colorful outdoor clothing that made it easy to see that she probably came from the city, not a local. The girls' clothes were also bright colors that I had never seen. Why did people from the city overlook the girls' flashy colored clothes? Why did she forget her existence and she came back to this shore? What to do with friends, their families, and those who enjoyed fishing and canoeing on the riverbanks.
It seemed that she couldn't do anything, and she had no choice but to stand and look like a stick. It's no wonder you're standing. The violent flow of the river separated the girl from the people. Everyone realized that it couldn't be helped. One of the adults was talking to someone on his cell phone. However, everyone can see that where the girl is, is gradually narrowing. Everyone is aware that it is very unlikely that the rescue team will arrive in time. Therefore, I have no choice but to stand up without being able to do anything. Is it just listening to the girl's crying as it is? At that time, someone picked up the red life jacket beside the canoe.
I went forward while staring at the girl. She was a mother. Mommy, and I hurriedly clung to the hem of her mother's clothes. She realized that what her mother was trying to do was too dangerous. She wouldn't have been anxious. She screamed and pulled hard, trying not to let her go. Mom crouched down and squeezed my hand, and she told me something. At that time I can't remember what mother said. Maybe I was screaming and not ready to hear the words. Mom stood up to shake off my chasing and ran, locking the buckle on her life jacket. I fell down on a stone in the riverbank trying to chase her. Still, I got up and shouted at mother's back. Don't go. I think mom didn’t hear my words. While checking the girl's whereabouts, I went around the river, went into the water, and got in the stream to help. It started to rain.
How long has it passed since then? Suddenly the surroundings became noisy. The girl was rescued from the river. Adults are pulling the soaked and tired girl out of the river. I was staring at while getting wet in the rain. People running up. A mixture of joyful voices and crying voices. Are you okay? Open your eyes. I'm glad I was saved ... The girl was wearing the same red life jacket that her mother wore. At that moment, I understood at once what was happening. Mom isn’t here.
"Mother ..... Mother .....!"
I looked left and right, searching for her.
Not anywhere.
"Mother ...!"
In the distance, I heard an ambulance siren. The girl was wrapped in a blanket.
Carried by many adults, she leaves the riverbank. Everyone is crazy about it and realizes that my mom isn't there.
She isn't.
"Mom!" Only I raised my voice and kept calling. Many times. Many times. Many times. I don't remember much after that. When I heard that my mother was found all the way down the river, it seemed like a lie. It wasn't long before I realized that the mug that mother was using was missing. Dad put a picture of mother, which he took someday, in a picture frame and put it in a corner of the kitchen. He had to add flowers every day next to it. Neighbors bothered to talk to me every time I met them on the road, listened to me in a friendly way, and encouraged me with tears. Meanwhile, the Internet was flooded with anonymous posts about the accident.
"It's a suicide act to jump into a river flooded by rain"
"It seems that she was confident in swimming, but it's different from the pool."
《It is irresponsible for my child to help someone else's child and die》
《If there is an accident, playing in the river will be a nuisance and annoying》
《Because helping people is a good person, this is what happens》
The person who wrote it probably didn't know anything about the actual situation, and the day after he wrote it, he probably forgot what he wrote. However, the person who wrote it keeps sticking in my chest forever. Immediately after the accident, an acquaintance told me with resentment that it was terrible when I saw this. In front of these words, I was too young to understand all the meanings. However, as I grew up and became able to understand the meaning of the words accurately, I continued to suffer from the unconscious malice contained in them. Losing mother.
How should I pass on these writings as a bereaved family, even though I still can't accept them, as if the mother who helped me was all bad?
Aside from me, my mother just smiled in the picture frame in the kitchen. From that accident, I think something has changed decisively from what I used to be. One evening, in mother's room, where dust began to build up, I stood on her chair, hoping to return to her happy memories. And I sang the song I sang with mother. But when I started singing, I realized I couldn't sing at all. My voice became stuck in the back of my throat and couldn't get out of my mouth. I was confused. Something in my heart was suppressing me from singing. Why can't I sing? Tears came out.
Hey mom. Why can't I sing?
It was clear that the reason why singing was so fun and necessary was because my mother listened to it.
However, just because you can't sing... You don't have to worry about anything. Even if you can't sing, no one will blame you. Life just goes on. I went to a local junior high school. The jumper skirt uniform was stuffy. Many of the elementary school classmates went to the town as they went on to school, and there were not half of the students remaining in the local area, so even in junior high school, it became a compound class. Therefore, the chorus practice was accompanied by the vice-principal teacher, and it was decided to sing in all grades. There were three people in all grades. Because there were only three people, I quickly realized that I was just lip-synching without singing. I was asked why I didn't sing, but I didn't say anything. I thought they would get angry, but they didn't get angry. It means that only I can visit from the next practice.
I sat alone in a corner of the music class and watched everyone practice. I may have looked like a lethargic girl who was just silent. But inside that, there are things that can't be translated into words.
I think it was swirling. When I left school and returned home, I irresistibly entered mother's room in the twilight. The twilight light was shining through the window. Cardboard boxes containing tableware and seasonal home appliances that are no longer in use are piled up on the table. It was completely turned into a storeroom. It's been many years since then. It has passed. I listened to the large number of records there, one by one from the edge of the shelf. Days, days, days. By listening earnestly, I managed to calm my rough feelings. But one day, there was a moment when I thought I couldn't bear it anymore. Upon returning, I entered my mother's room, sat down in front of the keyboard, quickly opened the report sheet, and began to write fiercely with a pen to spit out the incomprehensible feelings in my chest. I was almost suffocating if I didn't spit it out. I turned over the paper and continued to write forever. -Why did mother leave me in the river? Why did she choose to help the child who she didn't even know her name rather than live with me? Why am I alone? Why, why, why – I added paper, supplemented with post-it notes, and wrote long, long lyrics. The scale that springs up is notated long and long. Those that were neither were spit out as pictures. It was a swirl of many kinds. It was like a whirlpool floating on the surface, like a black hole that swallowed everything, and like a hole in the top of my head. The floor of the room was filled with pieces of paper with a mixture of lyrics, pictures and sheet music. But suddenly..... I returned to myself and stopped writing. Right now, I've noticed the worthlessness, meaninglessness, ugliness, and helplessness of the words, pictures, and scales I wrote.
What are you doing? I broke the paper. Everything I've written so far.
I threw it in the trash can without hesitation. The bundle of paper looked like a vomit that I had just spit out. Then I became a high school student.
I finally found myself worthless. The uniform tie was stuffy. I crossed the subsidence bridge while looking down and went to school. I took an exam and passed the exam at a junior and senior high school in the center of the city, and transferred from high school. There, I met my childhood friend Shinobu-kun again.
"Shizu.."
"Shinobu-kun ..."
Now that I was in high school, Shinobu-kun looked tall and shining, all different. On the other hand, I didn't seem to have grown at all since then, and I was irresistibly embarrassed and couldn't even talk. What have I been doing so far? I started a new life going to the city from the mountains, but I couldn't get into studying. Even though I had a hard time taking the exam, I just looked out the window during class. Knowing that this shouldn't be the case. Club activities didn't go anywhere. There were very few such students. On the way home, you can see the students devoting themselves to club activities. The track and field club is jumping the training hurdle in a line in the courtyard. The volleyball club is running on the ground. A percussionist in the brass band with a metronome in his ear is striking a stick in the hallway. The Naginata club sits upright in the martial arts hall with a good posture, and thank you for your cooperation, saying before the practice. The first-year students of the baseball club, who have not yet been numbered, stand side by side and watch as if they are digging into the practice of their seniors. I didn't belong anywhere, so I left school quickly. It was already winter. There is a river called Kagami River that flows from east to west in the center of the city. Since the flow is often gentle, the TV tower and buildings on the opposite bank are reflected like a mirror. When I returned to the station through the road beside it, the girls of the light music club carrying the "Chahahaha" musical instrument case overtook me with a light step while laughing. A cute cat-shaped stuffed animal attached to the school bag is shaking. Attached to my school bag was a cheesy plastic plate of "Gutto Koremaru". "Gutto Koremaru" is an egg-shaped character who can poke his hand against the wall and endure the pain. I have a crack in my head, probably because I endured it too much. Of course, it's not cute.
In a dark and narrow corridor.
I resisted, "I can't do it! Hey!", But I was pulled into the room, saying "OK." The soundproof door slammed behind me. Shinboku "Ah!" There was a flashy room in a karaoke box, and the pink and purple lights were spinning mysteriously. It smells of incense. Only for girls in the class.
I heard that it was a social gathering, but when I saw the frenzy of the girls standing on the sofa and shaking their heads, I thought that I could not get into this tension very much.
"Peggie Sue is cute"
"This is the one that is popular in" U ", isn't it?" On the monitor screen on the wall, the popular Az of "U", Peggy Sue, was seen singing in a black rubber dress. Purple lipstick that shakes silver hair. An eccentric beauty with red eyes. Peggy Sue? "U"? Az? Is it popular? I don't know anything. It's like an event in a different world from me. Then, Hitomi suddenly offered a microphone, "Yes." Sing, and so on. "Huh?" Puzzled. Neither the coat nor the muffler is taken off. But "yes" the microphone was pointed again. Why for a child like me who is at the end of a class?
"Sing together?"
"Hey, sing."
The shadows of the girls press the microphones. What do you mean?
"Are you not going to sing alone?"
"Isn't it a lie that you can't sing?"
I see, so it’s this situation.
Dozens of microphones are forced against my face one after another. "Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu"
"Sing"
"Hey, sing?"
"Sing"
Those voices sound like a threat.
"You're telling me to sing."
"Sing!"
"Sing!"
Ahh!
Immediately, the microphone popped off and fell to the floor.
The girls dancing on the sofa suddenly saw me. It's calming down as if I was taken aback.
"What happened? Suzu-chan"
The mic and the shadows of the girls disappeared like a phantom.
"No, nothing. I'm sorry. Hey ..."
Without saying anything, I pushed the door of the karaoke box open by force and went out like crawling. Someone might have heard and told everyone that I couldn't sing.
When I got off the bus, powder snow was flying. I almost slipped down the slope from the bus stop. Even in Kochi, it usually snows in the mountains, aside from the city. When I crossed the subsidence bridge, I heard a crackling sound of thin ice. The surface of the concrete bridge is frozen.
Cold. It's not dexterous enough to get used to everyone, and it's not divisible. On the other hand, I’m not strong enough to be alone, not prepared, and have no idea.
I don't do anything selfish. Rumors that you can't sing, that's a lie. I'm just not confident in myself for a while. I want to get along with everyone. Really. I know. Of course I know. So "Ah ... Ah ..."
In the middle of the bridge, I impulsively exhaled my voice.
"Ah ... ah ... ah ah"
As I breathed in, cold air sank into my throat. Still, I sang towards the river. "Ah..”
Did I sing? It didn't match a song. It's just a growl. The bag slipped off my shoulder. Will you forgive me if I sing? Can I get along with everyone if I sing? It doesn't help to sing alone in such a place. It's like a scream of a dead end before being crushed. Still, I sang that song with my mother with a squeezed voice. I was happy back then. It's different now. Powder snow was swirling in the flow of the river. Suddenly, in front of me it became pitch black. Nausea swelled from the back of my stomach, and I held my mouth with both hands.
"Uuuuu!"
I crouched on my knees. However, I couldn't stand the momentum of the backflowing gastric juice. I pushed my body forward and vomited towards the clear stream under the bridge. The vomit that was about to kneel and vomit fell to the surface of the water, creating a number of ripples. I spit out everything in my stomach and fell on the bridge. My hair is messed up and my mouth is smeared with gastric juice and smells. It's already spicy. I want to get rid of everything. Shivering and crying as if groaning. Drops of tears ooze on my cold cheeks and tingle. I wish I were gone.
I could hear the slight sound of powder snow folding and piled up right next to me. A notification came to the smartphone that slipped off my bag. It was a message from Hiro-chan.
<< Look at this, Suzu. It’s so amazing that I’m seriously laughing. >>

Whats Christmas Without Burnt Cookies?
Tumblr media
Prompt by @estellalovespip: I think a lil alex fic where she burns the Christmas cookies would be cute.
A/N: Heads up! I suck at writing all of a sudden so sorry if this is terrible. I’m trying to keep it as Christmas themed as possible! This is so bad so I’m sorry, and sorry it’s so late, I have AP work over holiday break which sucks. Enjoy (if you can).
“Well that’s not good,” I said from the couch as Alex was doing the dishes in the kitchen.
“What’s that?” She asked, coming out the kitchen, wiping her wet hands on a kitchen towel.
“We’re on lockdown,” I said, looking up at her and her hands stopped moving.
“Well what about our plans? We’re we gonna go away for your birthday this summer,” she pouted.
“Don’t worry baby,” I smiled, standing from the couch to give her a hug, “I doubt it’ll last that long.”
December 24th 2020 (Alex’s POV)
“Remember when you said you didn’t think it’d would last through the summer?” I asked Y/N and she rolled her eyes at me as I giggled, kissing her cheek as I pulled out the sprinkles and cookie decorations from the cabinet.
“Hey,” she said, back still turned away as she rolled out the dough on the counter, her muscles contorting and contracting with every push, “I don’t see how this is bad, I get my wife all to myself this Christmas.”
“If that’s how you want to interpret it,” I smiled, sorting the colors.
“What’s that suppose to mean?” She finally turned to me and I just giggled, holding her waist as she folded her arms and I kissed her nose, which she couldn’t help but smile at.
“It means,” I said, putting my hands behind her neck and closing the gap between our bodies, noses touching, “I’m not sure your ready for all this Morgan.”
There was a pause before she burst into laughter.
“Okay Al, that might be the most cringe thing you’ve ever said,” she laughed, cupping my face, “And don’t try acting like a top because we always know how that ends.”
I sighed, at least I tried, and of course it never worked, but I tried. We went back to the cookies, Y/N cutting out the shapes as I watched, content to just watch her do whatever she wanted, honestly anything she did was cute.
“Baby?” She asked. I snapped out of my thoughts, putting my chin on her shoulder.
“Hmmm?” I hummed.
“Do you wanna cut some? I don’t wanna do it all if you wanna try,” she said with a warm smile.
“Have I ever told you you’re the most adorable person I’ve ever met.”
She pouted like a petulant child, but it just proved my point more and she spun around, crossing her arms too.
“Stop babe, you’re just proving my point,” I whined with a laugh, kissing her cheek and cutting a shape out before backing away, “There, I did one, now it’s all you.”
“If you say so,” she shrugged going back to work.
In the meantime, I threw in some Christmas music, I know Mariah Carey did the original ‘All I Want For Christmas’ but I personally think Michael Buble’s is better.
“Honey!” Y/N called form the kitchen after about 10 minutes of cutting, re-rolling dough, and cutting again.
“What’s up?” I popped my head in the kitchen. I wasn’t into the whole process of baking, I just liked the decorations part, which is why I often left this job to Y/N.
“Did you pick up marzipan from the store when you went shopping or no? Didn't you want to make decorations with it?”
I froze, realizing my massive mistake. Of course I forgot the key ingredient to my decorations and it was in that moment I remembered I forgot something else, “Oh my god I forgot the gold food coloring too!” I exclaimed, a little panicked as Y/N slipped on an oven mit, popping the layers of cookies in the oven.
“Don’t worry babe,” she smiled, washing her hands and grabbing her mask from the dining table. She slipped it on her face, handed me her apron, and grabbed her wallet and keys, “I’ll go grab them now, you just watch the cookies okay?”
“You sure?”
“Someone has to watch the cookies and you need to be able to decorate,” she chuckled, “I’ll be like half an hour, but they’ll only take 10 minutes.”
“Okay,” I said as she slipped out the door, “be safe!”
I sighed as the door shut, how could I have forgotten?! It’s like the key ingredient to cookie decoration! Anyway, at this point I only had one job, and it was to make sure the cookies didn’t burn. I mean that was easy enough right?
Wrong. I mean in theory it wasn’t hard, but admits my foolery, I ended up sitting in the couch as turning on a Christmas movie ready for when Y/N got back... and I fell asleep. I fell actually into a deep sleep until...
“ALEX! WHY IS THE KITCHEN SMOKING?!”
That made me shoot awake, jolting up to see Y/N had dropped the groceries on the table, stepping into the kitchen which had black smoke emitting from it. The smoke detector went off and I begrudgingly whacked it, making the batteries fall out.
“Babe?! You okay?” I called, waking up a little better now.
“Fine!” She called, coming out the kitchen with a kitchen towel over her mouth, “I opened the kitchen window, but we might have soot on the ceiling.”
She waited with me outside the kitchen until the smoke dissipated, by which time we’d rushed into the kitchen to see if anything was damaged, which luckily nothing was, and Y/N opened the oven.
“Well?” I asked in anticipation.
“I mean if you like your cookies that crispy I think you might have a problem,” she laughed, pulling out the tray of black and decrepit looking cookies.
“I can’t believe I fell asleep!” I said angrily crossing my arms.
“I had a feeling you’d do that,” she laughed and I looked at her puzzled as she kissed my cheek, placing the burnt tray on the side and opening the fridge to reveal more cookies, unbaked and already in perfect balls on the tray ready to go.
“Oh thank god,” I put a hand over my heart.
“So you still get to decorate,” she laughed, popping that in the oven and setting a timer on her phone before coming to me, “And maybe next time k should make you go out.”
“Maybe,” I laughed.
We spent the rest of the night making sure the cookies didn’t burn, which was mostly Y/N’s doing, decorating, and then eating them all in less that 30 minutes while watching the grinch. Of course, the smell of smoke still in the house wasn’t ideal, but whats Christmas without some burnt cookies?

handcuffs
warning: smut, cursing, unprotected sex (DON’T RISK IT LADIES)
pairing(s): jj maybank x Reader
word count: 3,861 (she’s a long one strap in babies)
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” you seethed, your eyes narrowing at John B as you watched him cower in the corner, a smirk playing along his lips.
“Dude this isn’t funny,” JJ’s voice piped up from next to you, his hands gesturing wildly at the handcuffs that currently had you attached to JJ.
“I think it’s pretty damn funny,” his smirk only widened and you went to lunge at him, tugging JJ along who quickly wrapped his free hand around your waist and yanked you back.
“Hurt him and he’ll never let us go.”
“Get off me,” you snapped, pushing his arm away from your waist as he rolled his eyes at your attitude.
“Look, I’m tired of you guys constantly fighting,” John B began, his smirk fading as he spoke, “Everyone is tired of you guys constantly fighting, so we all thought it would be a good idea to like... stick you guys together for 24 hours and hopefully end the fighting.”
“24 HOURS?” You yelled, your hand tugging at JJ’s and yanking him forward with you as you once again lunged at John B, but JJ’s large body stood his ground causing you to fall back into him, “John B, we can’t even be in the same room for an hour without wanting to kill each other, let alone 24 hours in handcuffs. How am I even supposed to pee?”
“You guys will figure it out,” he shrugged and you shook your head, turning to JJ who was oddly quiet. He was already looking at you, a smirk matching John B’s on his face.
“You’re insufferable,” you mumbled, knowing he was getting a kick out of your anger towards his best friend, considering that anger was usually directed at him.
“Any other girl would be begging to be in this position babe,” he snorted, causing John B to roll his eyes and shake his head.
“Anyways, I’m leaving for the day. You two can figure your shit out on your own without me here.”
“JOHN B! YOU CAN’T LEAVE ME HERE,” you called after him, watching as he walked out the front door with a wave.
***
You had been sitting on the couch of the chateau for an hour, fighting over what to watch on TV. JJ didn’t really care what you watched, he just liked watching you get frustrated, realizing you couldn’t just walk away from him, and you would let out a loud huff before sinking back into the couch.
The Pogues had been reluctant to welcome you into their group when you first moved onto the island a year ago. You were technically considered a kook, but you had made it clear your first week on the island you didn’t give a shit about how much money someone had. Sarah loved you the second she met you; your family had been invited over to her house for a welcome dinner, and Rafe had made a comment about getting you in his bed under his breath so only you could hear it, and you had proceeded to grab your mothers glass of wine that was across from you, flinging the red liquid all over Rafe. Sarah immediately texted the other Pogues about what had happened, and they agreed to meet you the next day.
While the others warmed up to you and you melted into the group smoothly, for some reason, JJ was an absolute dick from day one. JJ didn’t like change, and he especially didn’t like bringing new people into the Pogues. With Sarah, he had at least known the girl since they were kids, making it slightly easier to accept her into the group. She also made John B happy, which was all JJ cared about.
JJ didn’t hate you, but he loved making you angry, so he acted like he did. Truth be told, JJ thought you were perfect in every way, you were too good for him, so he decided it was easier to make you hate him than silently pine after you.
You didn’t hate JJ, he just got on your god damn nerves so often. Sometimes the things he said and the way he acted towards you hurt your feelings, and for a while you had considered excusing your friendship from the Pogues, but when you brought it up to Sarah, she assured you the others loved you, and JJ was just... well.. JJ. You also couldn’t stand the kooks, and if you left the Pogues, you’d be left with no friends.
A puff of smoke whirled around the two of you, the scent of bubblegum invading your senses. You inhaled quietly, enjoying the smell mixed with JJ’s cologne, though you’d never admit it to him. It was quiet for a moment, but eventually the vape pen he had in his hand came into your line of sight. His eyes locked on yours, an eyebrow raising as you hesitated for a moment before wrapping your lips around the small black device and inhaling deeply, the smoke filling your lungs. You let your eyes close as you leaned your head against the couch, tossing the remote into JJ’s lap.
“Watch whatever,” you muttered, the heat from outside taking away your ability to continue arguing.
JJ’s eyes were locked on the way your chest was rising and falling, sweat beads dripping down the exposed skin. You were wearing a sleeveless floral sundress, the top dipping into your cleavage, and JJ could tell you weren’t wearing a bra. The sundress you were wearing was JJ’s favorite on you, but of course he’d never admit that to you.
Unfortunately for him, you could feel his gaze on you and you shot an eye open, scrunching your nose at the blue-eyed boy.
“Take a picture, Maybank,” you chuckled, watching his eyes widen as he realized he’d been caught, but it was quickly replaced with a smirk.
“Ya know what, I think I will,” his hand reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone and opening the camera, tilting it towards your chest as he snapped a picture before you could react.
“Pervert,” you muttered, knocking your shoulder into his, but your cheeks heated up at the thought of JJ having a photo like that of you in his phone. JJ let out a loud laugh, shaking his head before turning his attention back to the remote.
Another hour had passed, and somewhere in there JJ had rolled a joint, you quickly plucking it from his fingers and taking a long drag. Now, you were both feeling the affects of the drugs in your system, your eyes hazy and your breathing deep. You were uncomfortable, the heat becoming unbearable, and you let out a quiet whine as the sweat dripped down your thighs.
“It’s so hot,” you huffed, yanking your hands up to tie your hair back in a messy bun, JJ’s hand weighing your own down slightly as you finished.
“Welcome to the Outer Banks,” JJ snapped, rolling his eyes at you as he unsuccessfully tried to wiggle his hand out of the handcuff.
In your current state of mind, the tone he had taken with you caused you to pout. You had managed to go the past few hours without saying much, and when you had spoken, it had been civil. You thought, maybe, he had finally decided to stop hating you.
“If you don’t like the heat, why don’t you leave? Would make all our lives much better,” JJ didn’t know why he was being so mean, truly. When he was high, his mind usually wandered to places that involved you and him, with much less clothing, so he always forced himself to be mean to you to make the thoughts go away.
You were silent for a moment, his words ringing through your head. Maybe he was right, maybe things would be easier if you just left them alone.
“Fuck you, JJ,” your body raised from the couch, yanking him up with you as you pulled him into the kitchen, ignoring his protests and complaints about his wrist hurting. You could feel the tears forming in your eyes as you searched the kitchen, looking for the heavy duty knife you had seen once as you searched the kitchen for food.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting the fuck away from you,” your voice shook slightly as you spoke, your fingers wrapping around the knife causing JJ’s eyes to widen.
“Wow wow, you’re not gonna like chop your hand off? Or mine?” You ignored his words, raising the knife and slamming it down on the chain that connected the handcuffs. In all honesty, you hadn’t expected it to work, but the cuffs were cheap and the knife sliced through the material easily, freeing you.
Without sending a second glance to JJ, you stormed out of the kitchen, grabbing your bag from the floor and storming out the front door, just as the other Pogues had arrived to check on you two.
“Hey! How’d you get free?” John B yelled, watching as you stormed to your car, but Kie put a hand on his bicep, nodding towards the tears that were falling down your cheeks.
“Shit,” Sarah mumbled, her feet rushing towards you, but it was too late. You had slammed your car door shut and taken off, the sounds of your tires screeching as you drove away.
“What the fuck did you say?” Kie was livid as she stormed through the chateau, Sarah hot on her heels, finding JJ back on the couch. He looked up at the two girls, confusion written all over his face.
“Nothing new, who cares? She’s a big girl, she’ll be fine,” he rolled his eyes, but Pope threw his backpack at JJ, knocking him in the face.
“She was crying. You’ve never made her cry before,” Pope was just as angry as the others, and as JJ heard you had left crying, his stomach twisted in knots.
“I didn’t...” he tried to speak, but Sarah cut him off.
“God just a few months ago she came to me crying about how she was going to leave us, to make YOUR life easier, and I had to convince her to not push us away, JJ. I don’t know what the fuck your problem is with her, she didn’t do anything,” John B was silent as he watched his girlfriend yell at JJ, his eyes watching him closely. He knew why JJ was the way he was. He knew JJ better than anyone.
“It’s because he’s in love with her,” his voice was calm as he spoke, and JJ sent him a death glare as he stood up from the couch.
“Shut up, John B,” he was seething now, angry at the brunette for knowing him so well.
“He’s scared of loving her, too,” John B didn’t listen, continuing as JJ was now stood chest to chest with him, “His mom left him, and he doesn’t think he deserves someone like Y/N, so he figured it’s easier to push her away.” JJ’s hands slammed into John B’s chest, pushing the boy back into the wall.
“You don’t know shit, John B,” JJ spat, his eyes reddening. The other Pogues were silent, watching the two, realization washing over them: everything John B had said made sense.
“You need to go tell her your sorry, JJ,” Kie’s voice was calm as she spoke, her hand resting on JJ’s shoulder, “I’m not saying confess your love or anything, but you need to apologize. She isn’t as strong as you think.”
***
Your parents weren’t home. A half-assed note had been left on the kitchen counter, informing you they would be gone for the week on a business trip. A dry laugh passed your lips as you wiped away the newly formed tears that dripped down your cheeks.
“Unbelievable,” you muttered to yourself before storming up the stairs and into your room.
Normally, the things JJ had said to you would be brushed off and forgotten by now, but you were so tired of the blonde haired boys hatred for you. You were used to your parents not giving a shit about you and wishing you were gone, but when you had met the Pogues you finally felt like you had a purpose. You were happy. And despite JJ being so mean, you found it fun, until today. Until he said he wanted you gone. You were in the shower now, scrubbing off the scent of JJ that rubbed off on you, rubbing your skin raw until it hurt to scrub any longer. The shower lasted 30 minutes before you had had enough of the warm water burning your skin and the scent of JJ was long gone. A towel was wrapped tightly around your small stature, your wet hair dangling down your back as you made your way into your bedroom. Immediately you could smell him, the scent of his bubblegum vape, weed, and his cologne slapping you in the face, and then you saw him. He was sat on your bed, his eyes watching you intently.
“What the fuck!” You yelped, your fingers gripping the towel tightly as you stared at the boy that was sat on your bed, “How the fuck did you get in here?” Your voice was shaky as you spoke, your chest rising and falling rapidly.
“You left the door unlocked,” he responded simply.
“So you’re coming to my house to make me feel like shit now?”
“No, that’s not why I’m here,” JJ sighed, his eyes falling to the floor in front of him. He ripped his hat off, running his fingers through his hair before resting his hand on the back of his neck, rubbing it deeply, “I came here to apologize.”
“I don’t need a bullshit apology because the others made you,” you snapped, stepping closer to him.
“I’m not here because they made me,” his voice raised as he stood from your bed, stepping closer to you now, “I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do, and if I didn’t want to apologize, I wouldn’t be here.” You were looking into his blue-eyes as he spoke, trying to read his emotions, but you couldn’t, “I don’t hate you, and I never did,” you rolled your eyes, your arms crossing over your chest causing JJ’s eyes to wander down before quickly snapping back up to your eyes, “I’m serious. I just...” he trailed off, letting out a long sigh as he threw his head back, “You make me feel... weird.”
“Just what every girl wants to hear,” you snorted, causing JJ to smile slightly as he looked back down at you.
“I don’t mean it in a bad way. I don’t know how I mean it, but I know when I see you... my heart starts to race, and I get... hot. Everywhere. And then you laugh or you scrunch your nose when you get irritated with me and I just want to pull you in and kiss you and never stop and honestly... I’m terrified. I don’t date. I don’t do relationships, but then you came along and suddenly I wanted all of that. With you. But you... you deserve so much better than me,” his words were coming out rushed, but you caught every one, your cheeks reddening at every admission.
“Why would you think that? That I deserve better?” your voice was gentle as you stepped even closer to JJ, your hand reaching up and resting on his cheek, “Because I’m a kook? And you’re a Pogue? I thought I’ve made it clear I don’t care about that, about money.”
“It’s not that,” he leaned into your touch, his eyes closing slowly, “I don’t know how to love someone, Y/N. Not in the way you deserve to be loved.”
“JJ Maybank, you of all people know how to love more than anyone else in my life. You don’t see it, but I do. The way you love John B, Kiara, and Pope. Even Sarah. It’s in the subtle things you do, the way you’re willing to protect them, even if that means pulling a gun out on someone or taking the fall for something Pope did. The way you watch out for both Kie and Pope at every party, making sure they don’t drink too much, or too little. You show your love when you think I’m asleep, passed out because I’ve had too much to drink and you carry me into the guest bedroom, letting me sleep in your bed, and then in the morning you claim I stumbled there myself,” Your lips were hovering over his now, getting closer with every word you spoke, and JJ couldn’t focus. His head was spinning, his stomach was in knots, and quite frankly he couldn’t stop thinking about how he was confessing his love to you and you were standing in front of him in nothing but a towel.
Instead of responding, he pressed his lips to yours, his arms winding around your waist and pulling you into him. The kiss was heavy from the beginning, a year of unspoken and repressed emotions clawing their way out in the form of a kiss. You were spinning, your hands making their way into his hair and tugging on the blonde locks, a sigh leaving your lips as he let out a moan into your mouth at the gentle tug.
His grip on you tightened, his fingers latching onto the soft fabric of your towel as he tugged on it, causing it to fall to the floor. He pulled his lips away from yours, stepping back and taking in your figure.
“Fuck,” he muttered at the sight in front of him, his pupils blown so wide his eyes were almost black. You didn’t respond, simply stepped into him again, your own fingers tugging his shirt off and throwing it on the floor beside you two before you pushed him back onto your bed, crawling into his lap.
Just hours ago, you had been crying and storming out of the chateau, swearing you would never talk to JJ again, and now you were naked, in his lap, about to let him fuck the shit out of you. You didn’t regret a thing.
“I need you, JJ,” you whispered, your hands going to work on the shorts he currently had on, tugging them down quickly.
“Are you sure you want this?” he rushed out, pushing your body back onto the bed so he was hovering over you now, his fingers trailing down your bare skin.
“JJ, I’ve wanted you since I first met you... oh...” you gasped as his fingers slipped between your folds, his thumb rubbing against your clit, his finger hovering above your hole before slowly pushing two in. Your back arched at the feeling of his fingers stretching you out, quiet moans slipping between your sinful lips.
“So wet for me, pretty girl,” he breathed against your neck, his lips sucking the skin until a mark was blossoming. You were a moaning mess beneath the boy, whines of need begging him for more echoing throughout the room.
“Wanna...” you tried to speak, your eyes rolling back as he curled his fingers inside of you, hitting just the right spot, “Wanna cum around your cock,” you rushed out, JJ grinding against your thigh and letting out a groan at the words.
“Don’t have a condom,” he cursed at the realization, his fingers continuing to pump, and you quickly shook your head at the words.
“I’m on birth control, please,” your words were fast, but he had heard you loud and clear, his fingers stilling inside of you.
“I’ve never... I’ve never done it without a condom before,” he confessed, his blue-eyes meeting yours. You smiled at the admission. He was reckless, but it was nice to know he wasn’t that reckless.
“Neither have I,” you whispered, leaning your head up to capture his lips in a soft kiss, “But I’ve been told it’s an unforgettable feeling,” his fingers had abandoned your hole by now, leaving you empty and clenching around nothing as he hastily pushed his boxers down his legs and kicked them off the bed.
“Are you 100% sure about this?” His hand wrapped around his member, sliding the pre-cum soaked tip between your folds, a guttural moan ripping through his lips at the feeling. You nodded, your arms wrapping around his shoulders and pulling him closer to you.
JJ slowly slipped into you, his eyes shutting as he whimpered a string of curse words at the feeling of your wet cunt wrapping around him.
“Fuck you’re tight,” he moaned, his fingers digging into your hips, sure to leave marks tomorrow, “Always this wet and warm? God damn,” he chuckled softly, absolutely blissed out at the new sensation. He had had sex many times before, but absolutely nothing compared to the feeling of your cunt wrapped around his raw cock.
“Just shut up and fuck me,” your fingernails dug into the skin of his shoulders as he began to move his hips, his name leaving your lips sinfully as you felt every ridge and vein of his cock gliding against your walls.
You were both sweating, your names being chanted between one another like a forbidden song, the feeling of him pounding into your heat almost too overwhelming. Your legs had wrapped around his waist as you ground your hips up into his with every thrust, toes curling at the sensation.
“I’m gonna cum,” you whimpered, JJ’s lips assaulting the skin of your chest and breast, leaving marks on every inch he could possibly reach. His hand slipped between the two of you, rubbing at the sensitive bud he knew would send you over the edge.
And it did.
You screamed his name as the pleasure took over, your walls clenching around him as he continued to piston himself into you, riding your high and chasing his. Moments later, he was releasing himself inside of you, his warm essence painting your walls and claiming you as his.
“Fuck,” he muttered, his body collapsing on top of yours gently as you echoed his words. JJ took a moment to collect himself before slowly sliding out of you, his eyes trailing down your figure and landing on the vice between your legs, watching as a mixture of your cum and his leaked out of the fucked out hole. He collected some of the leaking substance in two of his fingers, softly pushing it back inside of you as his jaw clenched at the sight, and you let out a quiet whimper at the feeling.
“We’ll clean up soon,” you muttered, watching him through hooded eyes as you fought off sleep, “Don’t think I can walk right now,” your cheeks were red as you spoke, and JJ took notice of the way both of your legs were slightly shaking. He smirked up at you.
“Maybe I should’ve confessed my love for you a long time ago.”
“Maybe,” you laughed, reaching forward and grabbing his arms, pulling him back down to you.
