#because my headcanon is that Rhodey called Sam up as soon as he found out just to let Sam know he was there for him

idk man I just feel like if tfatws doesn’t bring Rhodey back they’ve really missed a trick. Rhodey would be such a good person for Sam to have a conversation with and compare perspectives on The Shield™ with
clearly they come from very different perspectives. like, (now, I dunno if it’s just me reading him this way because the Iron Man movies are, ironically, much more patriotic than the Cap movies, along with the fact he’s so high ranking, but) Rhodey seems to have that streak of American Patriotism™ in a way that Sam just doesn’t.
and yet I don’t think that would necessarily translate into wanting Sam to take the shield, which is really interesting. because in the one scene we got with him in he was an absolute sweetheart being there and listening to Sam and reminding that the shield hadn’t been used in over seventy years before Steve came back so it’s okay for Sam to let it go.
this is the dude who let the military turn his War Machine armor into the star-spangled Iron Patriot - and clearly regretted it afterwards. (interesting how the government was perfectly happy letting a black man be the face of patriotism in this situation... in an outfit where we couldn’t actually see his face). Sam, on the other hand, was given the opportunity to become a star-spangled patriotic symbol and turned it down.
they have so much common ground and yet all of that common ground comes from such different perspectives!! idk idk idk I just think a conversation between these two would be the perfect way for Sam to finally express all his pent-up feelings without being ignored, or worrying about upsetting someone else, or feeling like he has to tip-toe around the racial side of things.
