Personally, as someone who also writes, I’ll read unfinished works unless the last update was more than three or four years ago. I know there’s plenty of amazing unfinished works, but I get so melancholy knowing I loved it so much and the author has just moved on (hopefully, hopefully it’s for good reasons)

that’s valid! and I’m glad you give unfinished works a chance. I personally read anything if I fancy it, even if it’s openly discontinued sometimes too. some of the best stuff I have read has been abandoned (as in, the author stated it as such) and I think about them still to this day!!!! I hate that so many readers are missing out but also the writers. that extra kudos / comment could be what motivates them to work on their next chapter. and it’s just a nice reminder that we are still here enjoying their stuff. like. your stories are forever! fresh eyes are reading this decade old fanfic all these years later!!! idk I find that part of it wonderful

It's a good thing I hadn't seen Utsukushii Kare recently when I'd gotten that ask about my favorite scene because I would never have been able to choose. Literally every single scene is amazing in its own way, and tells us so much, often with very little.

I'm only halfway through my re-watch, so I'm sure that this list will expand, but in terms of scenes that give me joy the top contenders are the first bicycle ride, the water fight, the fireworks at night, and the entire scene in the classroom culminating in the hand kiss. Honestly, that last one might win, just because there is so much happening in it.

Amazingly, this show gets even better on re-watch. I'm noticing all sorts of details I missed the first time. And, like in my re-watch of Blueming, I'm paying a lot more attention to Kiyoi and his reactions and expressions. The actor and the framing put so much subtle nuance into the character; everything we learn about him in the last episodes is already there, waiting to be noticed.

Original Anon, if you see this and want to write in with your favorite scene from Utsukushii Kare, I'd love to read it.

Also, I love Hira's house. So delightfully cluttered and homey, in a real, lived-in kind of way. Something I've noticed Japanese shows often do well.
