I got irritated trying to build one large compilation, so I figured I'd start posting things in smaller chunks.

Anyway: That dwarven tendency towards having sudden premonitions of the future, and a focus on the forms of magic other than that practiced by proper dwarven society (ie divine magic), like those kids and their new-fangled arcane magic, and dwarven bee keepers, also known as druids (bees, bees, bees, GIANT BEES). God I love the dwarves for that alone.

Dwarves have an uncanny knack for foretelling future events; a dwarf feels their death approaching when their time draws near, and some experience brief flashes of events in their future (good or bad). Dwarves put a lot of stock in the concept of fate, and it's firmly believed that these premonitions are sent to them by the gods, "to ensure that each dwarf knows when an encounter, decision, or deed is especially important to the Folk as a whole, so he might act accordingly."

The dwarven gods "serve their steadfast worshippers diligently" and their people respond to this with devotion - they are an extremely religious peoples. They're firm in their belief that as long as they follow their deities' dogmas faithfully that the gods will aid them in their time of need. As their gods place a strong emphasis on hierarchy and honour, the dwarves follow suit, and a good dwarf will always honour their vows. As a result of this emphasis on religion, dwarven magical tradition is predominantly divine magic, with a minority of druidry. Arcane magic has only seen use amongst dwarves in recent history (in the decades following 1306 DR).

Dwarven clerics have a tighter relationship than most do with their gods, as their dwarven gods are more likely to aid their followers directly than any other pantheon. This direct connection to the divine gives a cleric great standing in their society, and also means that dwarven religion is less likely to be corrupted and more likely to be accurate to what the deity believes than how the priesthood "reinterprets" it (Moradin is watching and will slap you over the back of the head).

That said, the gods do play favourites and are more likely to respond to those favourites.

The aid they ask must also be for the sake of bettering the lot of dwarves as a whole in order to be given.

Those who become priests often feel an affinity from a young age. They hear their deity's voice in their mind, experience an impression of their emotion or witness visions of them.

Amongst non-dwarves clerics will usually hide their status, and are loathe to allow outsiders to witness them in worship or casting spells (these are sacred, holy and private things not to be witnessed by undwarven eyes).

Traditionally, only men were allowed to become clerics of male deities, and vice versa.

The most powerful clerics are known as the High Old Ones (level seven and higher, mechanically). Theirs is the most direct line to the divine; they are the direct servants of the dwarven gods, and their very voices on Toril. If a High Old One reports news of a nearby potential threat to their god, they can expect divine intervention of some sort (even if it's just the deity tracking the threat's movements and reporting back to the dwarves so that they can protect themselves).

Prior to the Thunder Blessing in 1306 DR, dwarves were incapable of arcane magic. Spells fizzled in their hands, or else went horribly awry in a manner akin to wild magic. It was the generation born afterwards that brought arcane magic into dwarven society.

Dwarves with an interest in arcane magic generally favour the god Durgmaren Brightmantle, the god of knowledge and discovery and often join his clergy.

In terms of arcane spellcasters, dwarves respect wizards more than sorcerers. A wizard studies and perfects their craft through skill, where a sorcerer simply inherits theirs through sheer luck of winning the genetic lottery. Many dwarven wizards are specialists.

Abjuration is often practiced by the religious - many multiclass as clerics of Berronar Truesilver and Dumathoin, and due to the school's popularity amongst the former's followers, many dwarven abjurers are women. -

Illusion is gnomish business (perhaps their only flaw), and such spells should never be used by respectable dwarves unless it's in defence of their homes (in which case it's used to improve traps and such). -

There are no laws against necromancy, but the fact that the school is inherently tied to the darker parts of existence means it's shunned by almost everybody and few seek to specialise in it. -

Divination is primarily the domain of clerics, but some mages have found a niche for themselves as advisors to those in power. -

Conjurers are uncommon, but when found will usually be seen amongst patrols defending dwarven settlements. Evokers can also be found amongst the ranks of dwarven warriors. -

Dwarves shun enchantment... unless they're dealing with trade partners and competitors that prove themselves untrustworthy, in which case, cast all the charm spells you like! -

Transmutation is primarily seen amongst shield dwarves, and the spells are not seen as useful for much aside from personal gain.

Druidry was shunned, historically. It's too tied to that baffling foreign concept of leaving nature as it is; imperfect. Druidry is seen as a thing for humans and elves, it's strange fey stuff. Even now it's not a popular choice, and dwarven druids are rare. The dur Authalar, also known as jungle dwarves, made an exception to this rule.

Nevertheless, at some point "generations ago" a group of dwarves formed between two clans called the Earth and Stone Conclave, where members of each dwarven subrace (save the duergar) could come together and discuss dwarven culture and issues. The druids of the dur Authalar introduced their cousins to the concept of apiculture.

The other dwarves discovered that "holy shit we love honey" and decided that learning this tree-hugging fey stuff was an acceptable sacrifice to better understand the bees and make better honey.

Dwarves having a philosophy of "everything can and should be improved upon" they also improved the bees by engineering giant bees.

Giant bees are large enough to be ridden on, and often serve as animal companions and steeds to dwarven druids. Their druids also tend to style their warpaint after bee stripes. When going into battle, the druid will usually fly in astride the giant bee, with swarms of regular bees serving as shock troops under their command. They don't generally fight to the death, but usually use their tiny troops to irritate a foe into retreating. Their favoured weapons tend to be crafted from the lost stingers of said giant bees (spears, for example)

Due to this combat role, dwarven druids often multiclass as fighters, rangers and barbarians. They're walking apothecaries who can provide alleviation from bee-stings and complications, and always have summoning spells prepared to call on the hive if needed.

Most of their time is spent tending to the hives and working with honey.

The dur Authalar do not keep hives the way shield and gold dwarves do; they simply keep track of naturally established hives in the wild that they take care of and establish a rapport with.

What are some western cartoons you've enjoyed?

Amphibia

A fun western take of Isekai, without the wish fulfillment escapism that plagues Isekai, which was actually criticized with the character of Marcy, with a lovable cast, great animation and a well made story with a bittersweet yet satisfying ending.

Hilda

The best modern cartoon period, a cozy and sweet yet action packed and even sometimes dark adventure show about a little girl exploring her magical realism world.

Gravity Falls

Not nearly as fantastic as everyone and their mom claims to be, but still a great show, with tons of good characters, excellent animation, and an overarching plot that while ultimately flawed (the second half of season 2 really dropped the ball on that one) was still great.

She-Ra

Great solid show from beginning to end, but especially towards the end when the silly princess stuff finally began to be properly integrated with the actual plot. Also Catra best character don’t @ me.

Kipo

The most underrated modern cartoon I’ve seen, a superb show with a great story, characters and a truly unique setting, not to mention it did the whole villain redemption thing everyone and their mom was doing at the time, but actually did it fantastically.

Invincible

Like many others I was drawn in by the brutality of the first episode, and boy did it just keep getting better after it! Just skip everything with Amber in it, and you should be in for the best animated superhero show since JLU.

Arcane

Love it! From beginning to end it was a wild ride of a show, and this is coming from someone that only knows about LoL through memes and porn. At times it almost felt like I was watching an extended movie.

The Amazing World of Gumball

This has to be the funniest modern show there is, at least before they decided to use a ton of “funny faces”, when it went down to being among the funniest. Still, a love letter to animation, featuring just about every style of it there is, and with an extremely weird yet fun cast of characters.

Before jumping back to anime I used to watch a ton of these, so I’m sure there’s more, but these are on too of my head and from the last decade, but I can honestly tell you, that my favorite cartoon of all time is:

Courage the Cowardly Dog

There’s just not a single bad episode in it, and every character has been as memorable as Courage himself.

Dishonorable mentions:

The Owl House: Amphibia but actually embracing the bad of Isekai.

Steven Universe: Started weird, got good but ultimately fell down the stairs due to its terrible obsession with finding good things about terrible people.

OK KO: Garbage character models and too obsessed with making references.

Adventure Time: Everything wrong with modern animation.

Regular Show: Modercai is a simp and just looking at the guy gives me cringe.

Bee and Puppycat: Everything wrong with AT and SU COMBINED.

Maybe you folks oughta spend Pride Month not being pissed off as all hell at queer people existing in stories.

We aren't, friend. I love queer characters in media, I want a billion more. When characters AREN'T queer in media, I headcanon them to be queer anyway and write fanfictions where they kiss. I love Steven Universe and Arcane and the Good Place (the main character of that show is openly bisexual despite winding up in a relationship with a man,) and the only thing I care about in Adventure Time is Bubbleline, and I specifically started watching Owl House and She-Ra Princesses of Power BECAUSE they are shows with canonical queer relationships, and last year around this time I got super upset because Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes DIDN'T include pairing characters off romantically and more queer possibilities than the last game in the series. Rewatching an old show I'd been watching since I was like seven and realizing that one of my all time favorite characters from that show was super bisexual coded made me so happy that it almost makes me tear up still thinking about it, because I'm bisexual and realizing that all this time that character I loved so much had been like me was super important to me. I might not ever do anything with the ideas I have for original works, but every single one of them includes several queer main characters. Every time I watch ANYTHING, I'm hoping that characters will be canonically queer or get in queer relationships.

If it were up to me, ninety percent of the cast of rwby would be openly queer and a lot of it would've been canonized within the first three seasons. Again, what I'm saying is 'RWBY needed and still needs MORE AND BETTER representation,' not 'I want LESS representation.' You're just a pathetic little weirdo doing the exact thing I said you shouldn't do, attacking a real life queer person for the crime of not thanking Miles Luna's biphobic straight cisgendered self for doing the bare minimum of having queer main characters after making us wait ten years despite not having any reported censorship to get through.

Just a reminder: I am allowed to dislike one single queer ship and one show with canon queer characters without having to give up my 'good queer' card, it's not homophobia for a bi person to ask for more and better representation, and not every queer person has to like your favorite little bees just because a group of majority straight cisgendered men let them be animated to kiss after ten years.

Last Song I Listened To: *Sobs as I dig through my YouTube history* It was Kerosene but the best part is looped. I like songs that are mostly just beats but also put me in a somber mood, if that makes sense. I made an entire playlist literally labeled "Somber Playlist" and there's a decent amount of songs just like that on there.

My Favorite Color: Ah, a toughie. For the longest time, it was a constant battle between red and green, but I think green has won out!

Last Film/Show I Watched: The last show I finished was Arcane: League of Legends when I rewatched it after a year two weeks back. The show I am currently watching is Young Justice, which I watched for the first time two years ago and have not watched since. And I am falling right back into it with all my favorite ships, dynamics, action scenes, plots, and character interpretations!

Sweet, Savory, or Spicy: Honestly, sweet and savory is where it's at for me! I just don't like spicy food, I'm too weak to handle it XD

My Relationship Status: I am le single.

Last Thing I Googled: Whether you believe me or not, the last thing I Googled was "Wheel of Names" so I could RNG writing ideas I had and write whatever was selected. I got "stargazing" from my ideas, so imma write that next!

My Current Obsession: Oh god, @mikaharuka is going to tease me mercilessly, but I've fallen so fast back into Arcane, specifically CaitVi, and Young Justice! I'm also currently losing my mind over four of my OCs and all the AUs and situations I keep sticking them in! @mikaharuka and @udaberriwrites keep enabling me into more T-T

Last Book I Read: I'm gonna keep it a buck with you all, I have no idea what the last book I read for fun was. I can make an estimated guess and say it was School for Sidekicks when I had free time over the summer and did my annual reread.

ok so apparently asmodeus is technically a part of the goetia family because he’s a bird/is in the actual ars goetia grimoire, but why aren’t bee/mammon? or are they? did asmodeus create the goetia like satan is said to have created the imps? if so, why doesn’t he rule them but rules the succubi instead? is satan a goetia? if imps are descended from him, assuming all of the sins are goetia, does that make imps goetia? what do the goetia even do? heck, what do the sins even do? you dont really see any of them actually ruling their ring on screen, just their wacky business ventures. unless its supposed to be a commentary??? why are the hellhounds considered the lowest class when they’re more powerful than imps and succubi? why is beelzebub a “good guy” despite participating in a little slave trade??

you don’t hav to post this. im just thinking about the worldbuilding here because it’s a mess. helluva is supposed to be the showthat develops how hell works, according to viv, and to give context to hazbin. but it fails to do both, especially when based on what we’ve seen of hazbin so far, none of this shit matters.

if i were to rewrite, id just make the only hierarchy be sins -> everyone else. just have the other species have different abilities but no “tier list” because spindlehorse does not know how to handle these subject matters with tact, or even in a way that’s interesting.

Hell yes the classism topic. My favourite. After rewatching Arcane I feel like I can approach this with new eyes.

Asmodeus - he’s a named king in the official 72 members of the Ars Goetia from the Lesser Key of Solomon. He’s supposedly an equal to Paimon, however, he’s been uplifted to Prince of Sin, wealthier and more powerful than Paimon, who’s favourite person is Lucifer. That has to be the tenth time a peasant idolised a rich person and the peasant as characterised as more evil than them. The sole exception is Fizz idolising Mammon.

Mammon is not named, Beelzebub isn’t either.

What do the sins do? Have parties and concerts. And lots of sex with peasants. They’re lazy and privileged while the Goetia serve the narrative of corrupt royals. Even though the middle and upper classes should really be swapped. The middle are content and complacent, higher ups are the more effed up kind.

As far as Hellhounds go, I think what’s happening there is they naturally have reverse werewolf powers. Being able to transform from wolf to human and back. Imps are absolutely not Goetia.

Beelzebub is intentionally written as participating in the slave trade of hellhounds just like Asmodeus is participating in creating sex robots with remarkable levels of consciousness, being sexually violated everyday and being aware that it’s happening. But they will be characterised as ignorant or silly or forced by someone else who you must hate, into doing it. Like some bad woman like a Roo or a Stella. Or some evil poor person who’s evil for wanting to steal from the rich.

I still hold that the whole royalty hierarchy since the pro stolas mid series rewrite, (which is clearly what destroyed it) is now just to make the ships more spicy. And to make rich people into the biggest victims of it somehow.

As for your last point! Watch Arcane instead! It’s far better at this stuff.

I recently finished the 40th chapter update on The Echo Garden and for the love of all that’s holy I can’t stop thinking about how convoluted and well thought out the author made Soundwave along with his backstory.

I would absolutely love it if you shared your thoughts on either the canon TFP Soundwave or the Soundwave from The Echo Garden, but I’m not even sure if you’ve read the fic, so your analysis and overall opinion on TFP Soundwave would be much appreciated.

And maybe, just maybe, add in a little bit of a review on RiD2015 Soundwave and how well you think the writers incorporated his character in the show.

I’ve never read The Echo Garden, but your excitement has me intrigued. 👀 I want to share my Soundwave’s backstory sometime, but this is neither the time nor the place to do so.

Anywho, TFP Soundwave. I have many thoughts about him—too many to fit in this ask. But I will share what I can.

one aspect about them i love

I can’t say everything, so I’ll go with his design.

one aspect i wish more people understood about them

He is an opportunist and a manipulator like Starscream—just quieter and more calculating. He didn’t start out loyal to Megatron.

one (or more headcanon(s) i have about this character

I wish I could share the really good ones I have, but because of TF Big Bang rules, I can only share the headcanons that aren’t exclusive to my BB fic:

His resting face is “perpetual death stare.”

He’s a triple-changer. (possibly implied in the novels)

He injects his energon straight into his system.

Similar to a horse, he can lock his knees and sleep standing up.

His body temp runs a bit colder than that of the average Cybertronian.

He has an unusually high pain tolerance.

He keeps his own medical records.

His holoform basically looks like Silco from Arcane, but with a lot more purple.

He does not fear scraplets. He knows what range of frequencies they can hear and which ones repel them.

His origins are tied to the Quintessons in some way.

one character i love seeing them interact with

None. He’s a genuine loner, and all of his interactions with others in the show or novels are boring to me.

one character i wish they would interact with/ interact with more

Optimus. In the novels, Soundwave seemed to hint at a minimal respect for Orion at one point, and if history had gone differently, I think they could have done great things together for Cybertron.

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character

Soundwave will play music for Shockwave over a private comm channel when working in the same general area so that they can listen together.

Again, I am limited because of BB rules. 😢 I promise I have a whole stack of interesting headcanons/AU thoughts for Soundwave. I just can’t share them until September.

Nothing like an ask game to remind me how boring canon Soundwave is compared to the version I’ve crafted in my head. lol

Now, for RiD15 Soundwave, my beloathed…

He started out so badass, but he was quickly demoted to “loyal lapdog” status in my mind.

But if I isolate him to the show alone, I think he’s a good antagonist. He was a force to be reckoned with, and it was fun watching the Bee Team get thrown around by him for a while.

Also, the way Soundwave handles Steeljaw is one of my favorite parts of the show. SJ was trying to cozy up to Soundwave and assert dominance, and Soundwave just dealt with him like he would an annoying pest. For the first time in a long time, Steeljaw realized he wasn’t the Alpha in the area anymore. lol

Soundwave didn’t have to pick the guy up. He could have checked out the fuel rods without moving him. But no—Soundwave literally grabs Steeljaw with a single tentacle and lifts him up like a cat that’s in the way. He had to put him in his place:

ALSO, my favorite part: Soundwave was one of the only—if not THE only—character who evoked fear in Steeljaw:

Overall, Soundwave in RiD was a decent antagonist for the audience the show is aimed at. He was a real threat, but his motive was simple and expected. Personally, I was disappointed, but I still found things to appreciate about him during his time on-screen. (Mostly because I was already rewriting the show in my head)

Hi there! :D For you, I have...would you like a writing doodle? I have a bajillion of them, not actually drawings, but like a doodle in words, just to get a dumb idea out of my head if it's clamoring for attention when I want to work on other stuff. Things that never make it to anywhere but the caverns of woe that are my archived scraps.

This one is for Arcane, and I'm sticking it under the cut 'cause it's probably just long enough to be a chore to scroll past, lmao:

“Is he okay?”  Cait frowns in concern.  “He hasn’t moved once since I came in.”

“Who, Viktor?”  Jayce cranes his head around to look at Viktor behind him, perched on a stool in front of a chalkboard like a dour, long-legged marsh bird.  His expression is abstracted, eyes unfocused and a line pinched between his brows.  Concentration collects, bunched, at the corner of his lips.  He spins his pen around his thumb as regularly as the tick of a watch.  Jayce waves off Cait’s worry.  “Nah, he’s fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, watch. Hey, V?”  Jayce twists in his chair to face Viktor.

The pen stops spinning and picks up tapping a metal clasp on Viktor’s brace - tink tink tink - with the same unfaltering beat. Viktor, thousand-yard stare still affixed, doesn’t even turn his head.  He replies with a preoccupied, “Что?”

“How many jumps do I need to wire the inside of a dodecahedron?”

“What did you say? How do I know?  Edges?”

“Yeah, edges.”  

The pen taps faster, not unlike the lashing tail of an irritated cat.  “Faces?”

“Pentagonal.”

“Open or closed?”

“Closed.”

Viktor clicks his tongue.  “Stacked?” “Stacked.”

“Then it depends entirely on installation position.  Why bother me?  Do your own modeling.”  A pause.  “The fuck you are stacking pentagonal dodecahedrons for anyway?  Rhombic tessellates, you know this.  Hexagonal profile.  Bees.”   A second pause.  “Four jumps without overlap for single rhombic.”

Jayce calls out “Thank you, V!”  He turns back to Cait and holds out his palms like he’s presenting Viktor on a tray, eyebrows up and grin shit-eating. "See? He's fine."

Cait stares, face pinched in a little twist of incredulity.  “You two are so weird.”
