In which Karl takes the mold man on a road trip
“Is the hotel five star?”
“You betcha, Buttercup.  Room service.  Beach view.  Balcony.  Jetted tub.  You’ll be a Princess all weekend.  I wanted to camp, but I hate those stupid ass cheap PLASTIC tents you people use.  Don’t have one of the deuc-”
“Camp? It’s November!”
“Suck it up, Winters!”
“Asshole!  Also, the song’s over.  Your pick.  What deep dark mysterious, moody song do you have in mind?  Probably some Beethoven, right-or else anti-war–”
“Reach in the glovebox.  ABBA’s Greatest Hits remastered.”
“You have got to be kidding me.”
“Take a Chance on Me.”
Ethan scoffed loudly.  “Is that the name of a song, or are you–”
“It’s a song, dumbass.”

Jesus, that ear. He should donate it to the Smithsonian. The records I used to listen to and still love, you can't make a record that sounds that way. Brian Wilson, he made all his records with four tracks, but you couldn't make his records if you had a hundred tracks today. (Bob Dylan)
I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard Pet Sounds. I love the orchestra, the arrangements – it may be going overboard to say it's the classic of the century – but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable in many ways. I've often played Pet Sounds and cried. (Paul McCartney)
This ("The Little Girl I Once Knew") is the greatest! Turn it up, turn it right up. It's got to be a hit. It's the greatest record I've heard for weeks. It's fantastic. I hope it will be a hit. It's all Brian Wilson. He just uses the voices as instruments. You keep waiting for the fabulous breaks. Great arrangement. (John Lennon)
He's like Mozart or Chopin or Beethoven or something. This music will live forever. It's going to be these melodies and these words, and it's just fantastic. I can't describe it. There's very few writers I feel the emotional and spiritual contact with that I feel with Brian. (Neil Young)
Brian was the most highly regarded pop musician in America, hands down. Everybody by that time had figured out who was writing and arranging it all. “In My Room” was the defining point for me. When I heard it, I thought "I give up – I can't do that – I'll never be able to do that." (David Crosby)
I was maybe too young to really appreciate how incredibly sophisticated the music was. I just saw five guys wearing the same shirt holding one surfboard and I thought it was lame. But all that changed when I heard Pet Sounds. Imagine a band influencing the Beatles. (Jackson Browne)
If there is one person that I have to select as a living genius of pop music, I would choose Brian Wilson. Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened. Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds. (George Martin)
I love Brian. There's not many people I would say that about. I think he's a truly, truly, truly great genius. I love him so much it's just terrible – I find it hard to live with.”God Only Knows” is simple and elegant and was stunning when it first appeared; it still sounds perfect. (Pete Townshend)
The man's a genius! Actually, when you hear other people doing his numbers, it makes you appreciate just how good those original songs are. (Jimmy Page)

Ok ok so i didn’t want to ask this in a comment on your fic so I’ll ask here, since you clearly got some classical music love in ya do you have any pieces to recommend for those classic musically illiterate i.e. me? Or just any that ya really really like? Cause those are some bops you’ve been dropping in your authors notes and I’m wanting more sweet sweet tunes 😆
Oh my god, do I ever. This is the greatest ask, thank you! I made the biggest word doc to catalogue everything, because I love classical music and love spreading that love. Obviously Mozart is his own section. I'm adding some explainers as to why I like these pieces / the mood you might want to be in to listen to them. Linking to Youtube because it's the most accessible! If you do listen to anything on this list, please tell me what you think. I left out so much but these are my favorites!
Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring: If you want to cause a riot in Paris in 1900, (which actually happened) this is the way to do it. God, this one goes SO hard from beginning to end.  Firebird is gorgeous as well, but there’s nothing like dancing around your apartment to those drums. Rite of Spring is around 35-40 minutes depending on the recording and just one of my favorites.
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony – I’m deliberately linking to the Berlin Celebration concert, played to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall because it’s so incredibly moving, especially the Ode to Joy, as sung here. There's this raw emotion in this recording that really hits for me (1h,30mins)
Prokofiev – Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet – Another piece that has no rights to go as hard as it does!
Tchaikovsky – You can’t go wrong with any of his ballets! Swan Lake , Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker Pas de Deux are all gorgeous, full of great highs and lows. Tchaikovsky is popular for good reason!
Saint-Saens - Danse Macabre It is almost Halloween!
Rachmaninoff – Piano Concerto #2 aka Rach2. I love this one in particular because it really is a piece that feels of its time in a way that has to be heard. It’s about 40 minutes long.
Erik Satie – Gnossienes 1-6 and Gymnopedies  1-3. God these are so soft and beautiful. My go to work music at the moment when I need to focus. They’re each fairly short, so they’re good quick listens.
Holst – The Planets Suite I think my favorite is Jupiter but they are all good. The full suite is around 45 minutes, but you can jump around!
Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons You will probably know this from commercials or movies, I feel like Spring and Winter especially are very well known, for a reason. They’re great! Each is a pretty quick listen! (under 10 mins)
Aaron Copland – Appalachian Spring. The Doppio movimento was my #1 most listened to song of 2021, but it’s all great.
Mozart!!
He's my guy! I went to Vienna specifically because I love him so much. It was a struggle to not give you only Mozart on this list.
Opera Overtures/Arias
The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi fan Tutte, Die Zauberflaute/The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Idomeneo
Arias (mostly Flute bc this list is too long already)
Tamino’s Dies Bildnis (obviously you knew this one) Papageno’s Der Vogelfanger bin Ich ja. The Queen of the Night/ Der Hölle Rache <- god OP this one slaps so hard it can’t be contained. Soave sia il vento from Cosi fan Tutte which is a trio and gorgeous.
Instrumental
Eine Klein Nachtmusic, Piano Sonata 16, Symphony 29, The Requiem, I’m linking you to the Lacrimosa for some haunted vibes, Symphony No. 25, Symphony 40
Let's get weird!
Olivier Messiaen - Turangalila Symphony (for Futurama fans, iykyk) and the Quartet for the End of Time. I saw Turangalila when I lived in Seattle and it was transcendent.

“Billy [Goldenberg] and Elvis hit it off immediately. Here were this young Jewish kid from New York, a classically trained Broadway composer/conductor/arrangers with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, a southern kid born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, about to get together in what turned out to be one of if not the greatest music collaboration in music history. Who would have dreamed this would be possible? Billy once told me that Elvis loved to play classical music on the piano when they were alone. His favorite piece was Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata.’ Billy said that if any of his guys were within listening distance, Elvis would stop playing the classics for fear they would see it as a sign of weakness.” (Binder, 2018: 32) A picture of Billy Goldenberg, sadly there aren’t any pictures of him and Elvis. Imagine Elvis playing this beautiful music piece though! 😔💗 * #elvispresley #presley #theking #graceland #elvis #smile #love #idol #music #iconic #vintage #style #classy #vintagefashion #kingofmusic #rockandroll #sideburns #blessedsoul #rip #elvisthepelvis #memphis #tupelo #soldier #elvislegacy #epe https://www.instagram.com/p/CqObGFvr9pD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

dumb evangelion headcanon about the chars playlists:
all of the kids of eclectic ass playlists. this is highly encouraged by misato, who firmly believes in the healing power of music.
shinji is especially egregious, to the point that asuka is perplexed that shinji's mixtape on his SDAT has like, city pop, fleetwood mac/classic rock, mf beethoven and mozart, and some pop song they heard on the radio in misato's car last week. and it just fucking works somehow and she's infuriated by it. shinji has a playlist for every occasion. one for crying in bed. one for crying on the train. one for crying while walking. one for crying in his test plug during tests. you know, he's organized in this one facet of his life he has control of, so while the songs don't necessarily seem to fit together, there's definitely an emotional narrative in the order.
(a shinji inspired mix here)
asuka's got a taste towards rock, punk, and emo. she also has a dramatic, theatrical side. so? misato DEF introduced her to my chemical romance and fall out boy, and asuka Never Looked Back. she's got heavy heavy guitars and strong female vocals and has maybe like, 2 playlists. Good mood (pop/pop rock/pop punk heavy) and Bad Mood. some of her favorite songs are actually heavily influenced by misato's tastes when it was just the two of them in germany, but she's too embarrassed to admit it and would lie that kaji showed her or she found it on the internet or something. she fucking loves mcr. like. she has hidden, but Strong Opinions about the "emo" trinity, ie that panic! fell off & that her opinions on "the best" mcr and fob songs are Absolute. she's def super into all types of alt rock, knows the entire history of emo & its off shoots as a spectrum, a la tiktok music historians.
(asuka inspired playlist here)
rei herself doesn't have an interest in types of music or any of that. she just likes it because it calms her like swimming does, not really understanding why she particularly "likes" a song at all, similar to how her viol playing would be very technically correct yet lacking a bit of the emotion in the instrument. anyway, asuka and shinji made her a mixtape together. as two kids who prefer to fill the silence but perhaps don't like talking, this is the only thing they can gift their fellow pilot: a mixtape. as such, rei's playlist is somehow even more eclectic than shinji's, but the vibes of all the songs asuka and shinji chose are somehow really eerie when put together. this irony is completely lost on rei, who usually only listens to it alone in her apartment anyway.
(a rei themed mix here)
bonus goofy side thoughts:
kaworu has One spotify or youtube playlist with Every Song He's Ever Heard And Liked, in no order or logical flow, no organization at all. this horrifies shinji nearly as much as the revelation that kaworu's an angel
gendo DEFINITELY is the one who left shinji tapes of city pop when he sent him to kyoto. that's what he listened to in college because of yui and kyoko, and he actually does still listen to it secretly. only fuyutsuki knows this. the rest of NERV is under the belief that gendo listens to like, evil villanous badass classical if anything at all. But no, his plotting playlist is city pop.
misato has excellent taste in music. she's got cds for cruising in her sick car, of course. she's still got a flash drive of all the music she, kaji and ritsuko pirated in college. after her temporary mute period, she hates to have complete silence unless it's dire.
something asuka scoffs at misato over? misato may have excellent taste, but she only has a shallow pool of songs from each artist she knows.. typically, the artist's greatest hits exclusively. asuka calls her a "fake fan" because she can't pass the "name 5 songs" test for most musical artists.
kaji was in a band in college. they made maybe 6 songs before breaking up.
ritsuko's guilty pleasure is radio pop. the blandest, most generic dancey pop songs? she loves it. she's GREAT at karaoke parties because of this.
aoba gives shinji and asuka band recommendations occasionally when they seem extra down. he offers one or two times to hook shinji up with a guitar teacher he knows but shinji rejects it every time.
i see hyuga as being. like. REALLY. into vocaloid. like this is a man who definitely has three hatsune miku concert tshirts in his closet that no one knows about.
maya ibuki is a lesbian. she fucking loves utada hikaru and reol, two gay icons.

And the saying that she's blinded by the light I've been talking about it's kind of like their lady as those who sit around and they're saying it's a rumor in the night and we have it and stuff like that and he said no not really so you get mad and he screwed the song up a little and but it really that's annoying as hell people trying that and not trying it. And it's treason towards their own but who cares but seriously I say it crashes down and they get something and they're saying it's around now and it has not happened and won't and they don't know where it is if it exists that's a singing about what's going on now and they're calling her son go-kart Mozart and he played Mozart and he played Beethoven and off and on and he wrote the symphonies this is I don't think so it's kind of not for me to say so Hera is saying that she's Mozart and it's true and he did a lot of work on it but he handed it off to her and here she is it's a miracle and it's like Megan Faye and it's actually who she is. And our son was not doing anything but my peuschel was. And it wasn't the greatest scene on earth no. But she's like a little boy and Mark has been trying to take her stuff and Trump and they're fighting and they're calling her go-kart Mozart because she was playing Mozart as well and poo poo head plays him let's not really what happened he doesn't want to tighten he does that on Titan but the song is about Hera and it's about Megan Merkel and it's about her being go-kart Mozart and the calling her him she changed his format and he's checking the weather charts it's a slight reference to our son and then it says that she's going to make it through the night meaning that she has a lot of bad dreams and hateful people are bothering her and it's really the max and these guys are not helping and he says they're competing it's nightmare but they fend them off she said wow that's terrible so soon they'll be helping but you get to hang in there just a few more days she said I will and I'll be fine so good job and for Christ's sake he might be making Fey that's a hell so she says that's terrible you jerk get away from me since I'm working on it I'm trying to compete with them LOL so she's laughing and laughing and laughs herself to sleep I woke up in a ball and it looks like Lynn she woke up and she said I slept overslept and I feel better and he goes never punish yourself that is yourself for not finishing the work or eating not correctly because you're overslept and you will be as wise as me hoping that freaking window damn it so she laughs and laughs that's comes over the window. You have to have oxygen she's breathing and says wow that's nice so it starts working and she's feeling better but really it's a trial and now she says it's going to get a little better he says I don't know maybe worse than better but they're doing the work they just stupid here and she laughs says these are terrible orders this is not their headquarters or their place of rulership and they shouldn't be issuing orders from here they are so so many. And it's getting terrible they said
And yes Hera kind of took over in the clarity crashes to the ground calliope and it's really what they're saying happens to her business but they are referencing the light collector and it's none of their business but people are trying it for a long time and they're threatening people that are trying to do things to help and they're not Max actually you're not and they're going to get hit.
Hera
The more the story is the moral is that you should not lie about what you're talking about and these guys lie all the time and they're getting beat up. No one can trust what they're saying about anything and nothing's getting done here and they're not really in charge of what's going on very vague and the issue with only a few and seems to be against it and they're getting beat up and they're assholes and losers just not doing the job right now they're investigating and they're slow and they're lame it's horrible but this transportation stuff works and it's making it work it's going forwards and they're making fly cars like hotcakes real fast.
Thor Freya
We need more of that s&s stuff and my nephew says you don't need any of that he knows what I mean it's going to try and look it up

Art’s Hit List
So, I mentioned in Franzi’s section of my muse list that Art put her up to making the Classica make art in exactly the ways that Art wanted it to be made...How many people did she want Franzi to go after? Let me give you a list.
Ludwig van Beethoven / Minona Fairchild. This was the only one of Art’s requests that Franzi actually succeeded in fulfilling--and not because she was evil or anything, it was more because of the bond that my bios mention they historically shared. When Franzi rolled up to the Black Forest to convince Minona to publish her pieces again, Minona told her the only way she’d ever compose for humanity is if Franzi moved her sufficiently with her playing. To remind her of her love for humanity, Franzi played Liszt’s piano transcription of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy--whose original lyrics, mind you, are about all of humanity coming together in brotherhood. She said to Minona that it may have felt that humanity turned their back on her, but humankind never forgot the message of siblinghood and togetherness that Ode to Joy was composed about. And so Minona agreed to leave the Black Forest and move into The Music House as the first person who lived there other than Franzi herself. Lacking such a connection to the other composers, however, Franzi could not (and did not want to) convince them to give up their other interests to serve the desires of Art’s one-track mind.
Johannes Brahms / Johannes Biehl. As stated before in his bio, Johannes was a bit of a late bloomer in coming back into his past life talents, leading people to believe he was lying about having been Brahms. Along the way to rediscovering his musicality, he picked up several other talents, namely figure skating. He was particularly known in youth circuits for skating to Brahms and placing in the top 3 every time he did, so he thought of going competitive--something that was frustrated by the fact that he was bounced around so many foster homes, not all of which could or would support his ambition. But when Franzi took him in, he realized he finally had the support he needed to make a splash on the competitive figure skating scene. And when she heard of his story, who was she to say no? I mean, technically, figure skating is an art, and Johannes often composes entirely new pieces for his short program and free skate. But in Art’s own scathing words to Franzi, “I brought him back so he could be Johannes Brahms, not Brahms on Ice.” Fortunately for Johannes, Franzi wasn’t a very good listener!
Felix Mindel (Mendelssohn) / Felix Abraham. Fun facts about the historical Mendelssohn: Felix Mendelssohn was actually a painter. So is his counterpart in my original setting, Felix Mindel, and so is his reincarnation, Felix Abraham. In this life, he’s the inverse of what he was in his past life: whereas Mindel was primarily known for his music and did painting on the side, Felix is currently known primarily for his painting and he does music on the side. Shamefully, however, Art is quite obsessive about Classica sticking to the fields that they were famous for in their first lives; she thinks that he is a mediocre painter at best and would much rather him give up his “side hobby” so he can devote himself entirely to producing the works that he never got a chance to because in his past life he died at age 38. Franzi’s job was to convince him to compose more, which she promptly failed at once she saw how attached he was to his canvas.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart / Wolfie Aiflós. Oh, this guy just grinds Art’s gears! She considers him up there with Bach and Beethoven as one of the greatest composers of all time--now if only he would spend his current life living up to that name instead of making Cupcakke remix memes on Youtube! She had not one but TWO plans running simultaneously to get him to start composing seriously again (Franzi’s convincing being one of them and the other one is so fucked up and depressing that it deserves its own post), which she stuck for as long as she did because she already killed him in his past two lives and she really didn’t want to have to off him again. Franzi tried a little harder with this case than with the other ones because she wanted to hear more of the old Mozart too--not to mention, she wanted to hear more pieces resembling those from his other two famous lives as a composer. But as with the others, he had chosen to take his current life in a new direction than his past. He was perfectly happy living out his days making drum beats vibrate so fast when played on electronic composing software that they sound like farts.
Giuseppe Verdi / Odario Narawa. Now this assignment was just cruel. Odario is just a chill dude living his life who doesn’t want to be bothered with any of this “past life” bullshit. But you know what Art really loved about Verdi? His ability to write tragic opera. And you know what she also wants the Classica to be? As strong as possible, and one path to doing that is to get hit with the full brunt of your past life memories and either succumb to them or come to terms with them. Thing is, given that Odario’s own life has been so fuckin’ normal compared with so many others’, he isn’t really inspired to write tragedy anymore, and he is allergic to any sort of major life stressors. But what does Art want to do other than unlock Odario’s past life memories so that he’ll write more like his past self again??? Now this was something Franzi outright refused right off the bat; she and Art had a huge argument about it. But Franzi, always willing to make excuses for as great a patron of the arts as Art, did not let it sway her or let it make her question the goddess.
