Be Kind 💕 An unfortunate incident happened as I was finishing up this drawing, late in my downtown studio last week. The front doors of the mall hadn’t been locked, and someone came off the street into my space. I always treat everyone with kindness, no matter if they are “regular folk” or those who are in some kind of need. They ignored my gentle “sorry, I’m closed” several times (saying I needed to respect them), messed up several of my displays, and seem to have stolen one of my hand sculpted jewelry sets. (They also took a sticker “because this one’s not in good condition anyway,” asked to take my empty glass Starbucks bottle to use as a water bottle, and bought two buttons.) It upset me, that someone would come into my sanctuary (and I named it such because for me, my art space is my sanctuary), and mess it up. Maybe I should have been more stern, but I fear escalated reactions, especially in those who aren’t in their best state, as it is unpredictable to me. Most have been harmless, just talking a lot, warming up, and then they leave. And so I continue to treat everyone with kindness. Probably I should have tried calling someone, like community support or one of the merchants who lives upstairs. There are a lot of things I could have done, more assertive things. I get myself confused in these situations, where I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, that they’re just another human, wanting warmth and company. But I felt unsafe. I was upset briefly, too, because I connect things with my artwork, and all the kindness I put put into this drawing, I thought would now be tainted by this ironic and somewhat violating experience. I thought this piece would now be spoiled for me. But I refuse to give up. Kindness and Inclusivity Matter

Kindness and inclusivity matter, making everyone inclusive matters. The more well intentioned we are the more kindness there will be in the world. It is important everyone is treated equally and being supportive and respectful is necessary, if society is to flourish.

We all have the right to say what we feel without recourse, as long as what we say isn’t offending someone else. Cancel culture has cancelled groups out, it’s also made it difficult for anyone to say anything, out of fear of a backlash.

Any act of kindness however small is never wasted. It carries more weight than any statement. No matter what any of us deal with, ultimately we’re all still looking for ways to fit in. You matter, I matter, we all matter, kindness and inclusivity matters.

When you actively choose to act with kindness you are speaking more through your actions and less through your words. Of course words matter, but actions will always matter more. They say a lot about a person. Actions show we care, we can cleverly use words, but words also belie secrets and intentionality is everything. What we say and what we intend are different.

When we practice kindness, we cause a shift in our overall tone of how we choose to interact with others. That matters. When we take away unconscious bias, we allow the love to flow. In today’s world we need it more than ever.

 How’d we get here?

 The Ultra Dad’s Podcast came from an idea Cindy Shane created.  Well, she planted the idea in our head after listening to the first time Bryan was on the RFP Podcast in May 2020.  There have many times over the years when we speak on the phone or in person the “we should be recording this” line comes out.  Well, here we are jumping in with both feet, like we tend to do, sharing with you our perspectives on life.  Let’s be candid – we are not perfect, and we fail often. Our favorite term to use is “it’s not ideal” and there have been countless times we’ve uttered, “a plan is great until you are punched in the face;” – but we do laugh a lot, at ourselves and/or each other mostly 😊.  All that said, there are those brief moments where things tend to fall into place and we, somehow, make it to that finish line – as ultrarunners yes, but most importantly has husbands, fathers, friends, and human beings.  We wanted to share those imperfections and those incredible moments that we’ve been fortunate enough to experience together over the last 30+ years.  So, sit back, grab a cold one, and hopefully this will be another time where things fall into place.
