If dick were to ever be in a drag competition he’d have to win that shit without question. His siblings would never let him forgot doing something like that and losing

ok this makes me think of that one post where dick enters the olympics and wins a gold and never tells his siblings until they find out on their own.

i think, say he ever did do competitive drag, he'd compete on some lesser-known foreign spin-off of rpdr (first one that comes to mind is rpdr belgique).

mainly to minimise the risk of getting recognised (whether that be by civilians, or family + friends)

he goes in under a fake name and even comes up with a new drag persona separate to the one he performs in locally in gotham. he goes the whole nine yards and even throws contacts + a prosthetic nose in too.

and it's just something he does.

he wins, goes back home, gets a belgian publicist to write up statements explaining his departure from the drag world etc etc. and never mentions it to anyone he knows.

not because he thinks they'll be judgemental or whatever, because they'd be quite the opposite. i think drag race is something all of the batkids at least would watch. maybe not together all of the time, but they all keep up with it and provide their opinions + comments in the family gc. (i don't think any of them would know about dick doing drag in general tbh, unless by some weird accident one of them found out. or if they're tim, because tim knows everything).

so, dick just keeps on living his life regularly, peacefully. until jason goes on a drag race binge and gets bored of the american version. he'd watch the whole season dick was on before he sends him a message with a picture of the drag queen, making some comment about how they look alike. (and at that, it's only because roy made a passing remark about it for the 5 seconds he was idly watching along).

and through dick's complete inability to keep anything from his little brother, let alone successfully lie to him, jason figures it out. and he's completely gobsmacked.

- attending on a sports scholarship. is on the diving team

- birth name Pascale but she hates it, someone called her Pierre years ago as a joke (after the founder of the modern olympics) and it stuck

- met charles as a kid on a highscool exchange scuba diving trip and they’ve been best friends ever since

- has made a habit of introducing herself as “from Rouen, not Paris”, so much so that the rest of the gang groans and says it for her every time someone new arrives and she has to make an introduction

- has bars of chocolate stowed in random places. literally all sorts. it’s her bad habit. she and Lando become friends because she hoards good Belgian chocolate (“the real stuff not this Americane or Britishe nonsense”)

- got into a huge disagreement with max over a second year group project. people could hear the dispute from several rooms down in the library. they were called into the dean’s office and let off with a warning

- claims not to be a good cook but regularly bashes out amazing French home cuisine that has half the dorm in tears

- somehow also finds time to snowboard and run half marathons during summer and winter breaks

- despite his academic ups and downs, already has unconditional offers from at least 3 Silicon Valley late-stage startups and all 4 Chinese big tech firms

- will one day do something so revolutionary with AI and visual design, like the next great CAD system or something, that he never has to work again

🌍 only watching races from one country

as much as i love the brutality of the belgian classics and of course the endless storied traditions of france, nothing hits the spot quite like the romance of a great italian road race.

Lombardia and Tirreno (how could i not adore the trident 🔱), the majesty of Milano-Sanremo (aka La Classicissima) having the best half-hour of racing all season (after the 250ish km it takes to get to the Poggio), the brutal climbs and drama of the Giro balanced by the STUNNING landscapes, and of course the fast-approaching dusty white roads of Strade.

so if i had to choose only one nation's cycling races you'd find me relaxing with a glass of finest pinot grigio (or some gelato) while the peloton speed along some beautiful Almalfi coastline or up some hellish Apennine slope

A pigeon named Rita from Nederhasselt (Ninove – East Flanders), has been voted the best young pigeon in the world. Recently, Rita also became an Olympic champion. This is exceptional for a pigeon that is less than a year old. "Now she heads for the loft to breed," says pigeon fancier and owner Bert Penne.

46-year-old Bert Penne from Nederhasselt, near Ninove, is proud of his pigeon called Rita. The pigeon, less than a year old, has already won two impressive prizes. First, Rita won the Olympiad, known to pigeon fanciers as the Olympics of pigeon racing. Later, this prize pigeon was voted best young pigeon in the world, winning the World Best Pigeon 2023 title. "It will be difficult ever to match this. I was hoping for a place in the top five at the Olympiad, but no one expected the bird would win three races in a row."

Bert named the prize animal after his mum Rita, who along with his father helps him look after his 130 pigeons every day. "Rita is less than a year old. She now goes to the pigeon loft to breed.  I don't trust racing her anymore, because something can always happen."

In 2013, another of Bert’s birds won representing Belgium at the Olympiad. "Ever since I was young, I have been involved in pigeon racing. I grew up in that world. To my knowledge, I am the first Belgian to win the Olympiad. I don't do it for the money. I do this purely as a fancier," Bert concludes.

Dramatic expansion of copper production went hand-in-hand with the Second Industrial Revolution that began in the 1870s, as copper was required for generating and transmitting electricity. Historians of natural resources have increasingly emphasized the importance of what happens out of view in the frontiers (places in the global periphery where resources are abundant like the Atacama desert or African copperbelt) and countryside [...]. This huge expansion of copper production was a global event. Only a few years after Bingham Canyon Mine began eating into Utah, open pits were established in the Chilean Andes, the Central African Copperbelt, Mexican deserts, and Japanese mountains. [...] [T]he environmental effects of copper mining went beyond transforming local environments. The new copper mining frontier involved a drastic new rearrangement of multiple and distant natures, as copper mining requires an enormous hinterland in order to sustain itself.

Producing copper not only involves tearing it from the earth. It must be extracted further. Low-grade ores needs to be crushed, smelted and sometimes refined on site, which in turn requires huge volumes of water. Olympic Dam Mine in South Australia extracts 34 million liters of water a day from underground aquifers, far greater than the quantities of copper it extracts. Smelting and refining copper, with a melting point of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, requires enormous quantities of energy to be sucked in from their surroundings. [...] Some mines in the twentieth century employed tens of thousands of workers, with farms needed to produce food to feed them [...].

In these destructive mining frontiers, securing adequate sources of energy is a perennial problem. In his book Gambling on Ore, Kent Curtis aptly described mining enterprises as vast industrial metabolisms with inputs and outputs encroaching upon various landscapes and ecosystems.

Copper mining firms had lumber departments to clear forest, desperately explored the wide vicinity for coal and other fossil fuels, and seized property rights over water. In 1914, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company owned several coal mines in Wyoming and Montana, and the saw mills it purchased in surrounding villages in Montana cut down more than 84 million feet of wood in a single year.

In the Central African Copperbelt in Zambia and Katanga (a province in the Democratic Republic of Congo), colonial mining companies denuded the landscape of trees for wood-fired power stations and smelters and sunk coal mines when this proved inadequate.

In the interwar period, mining engineers believed they could solve the perennial energy problem through hydroelectricity. Dubbed as “the white gold,” the use of hydropower produced unintended side-effects, requiring even more geoengineering and environmental intervention.

In Katanga, where the first dams were erected by the Belgian firm Union Minière du Haut Katanga in the 1920s, surrounding people and colonial missionaries complained about a mosquito plague and the loss of their lands through floods. [...] Similar schemes were planned for Zambia’s copper mines, which also relied on an enormous ecological hinterland. The largest of these was the Kariba Dam, a towering 128-meter-high wall that dammed the Zambezi River and formed a lake stretching 280 kilometers. Filling the reservoirs took months, and in the process, some 6,000 animals were airlifted from newly formed islands amidst the biblical floods. The event captured the world’s imagination and the effort to save these animals from the new lake was nicknamed Operation Noah.

The tens of thousands of people displaced by the dam attracted less attention.

Okay. Listen. My biggest pet peeve in cycling is changing bikes during time trials. So I propose a time trial has to be done on a time trial special.

(I know some riders do time trials on road bikes for various reasons and that's fine.)

And a second rule, because why not: one way radio during the Olympic race and Worlds. Riders would get the important updates from the race radio about who's in the breakaway and how much time gap there is, etc. This year's Worlds were ridiculous and everyone would benefit from having actual updates. And UCI would offer the devices for the less wealthy teams.

Are you named after anyone? nope but my parents chose my name by writing names on a wall at my grandparents' house (they had just bought it and were renovating it), everyone could write propositions and vote by putting a stick next to one every day. julie won, closely followed by pauline and charlotte. my dad wanted to call me axelle because of belgian singer axelle red.

Do you have kids? you'd need to call the vatican bc idk how it could have happened lol. i don't want children i very much enjoy having free time and money. pregnancy scares the shit out of me and i'd never be able to trust someone enough to settle down with them and risk other living beings' life being shit because of my choices.

What sports do you play/have you played? i tried different things but the ones that lasted the longest were swimming and badminton. i did a bit of rugby and bouldering when i was in school.

What's the first thing you notice about other people? no idea? as in physically or ? physically i guess their face???? and their height because i'm quite tall. otherwise the way people look at me/behave when i wear a ffp2 mask pretty much tells me what i need to know straight away...

What are your hobbies? motorsports (duh) and baking/cooking. i like trying new things and dishes from around the world. if trying new hobbies was an olympic sport i'd get a medal. rn i spend most of my time looking up how to decorate my place. i did watercolours for a few months. i made my own desk. i bought stuff to learn to knit ? i play the guitar and i'd love to learn other instruments

Do you have any pets? i don't live with my parents anymore but we still have a cat (he's my baby) and a parrot (he likes me too much if you know what i mean 💀)

Dream job? i've always wanted to do something scientific, i ended up studying material science and engineering and my last jobs were being a lab tech. first one was in r&d and i really want to go back to that. it's the perfect combo of doing science-y things and still doing things with my hands and not sit behind a computer all day. Vangelis, composer of Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner soundtracks, dies aged 79

Vangelis, the Greek composer and musician whose synth-driven work brought huge drama to film soundtracks including Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, has died aged 79. His representatives said he died in hospital in France where he was being treated.

Born Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou in 1943, Vangelis won an Oscar for his 1981 Chariots of Fire soundtrack. Its uplifting piano motif became world-renowned, and reached No 1 in the US charts, as did the accompanying soundtrack album.

Mostly self-taught in music, Vangelis grew up in Athens and formed his first band in 1963, called the Forminx, playing the pop music of the time: uptempo rock’n’roll, sweeping ballads and Beatles cover versions, with Vangelis supplying organ lines.

They split in 1966, and Vangelis became a writer and producer for hire, working for other musicians and contributing scores for Greek films. Two years later, he struck out for Paris to further his career, where he formed the prog rock quartet Aphrodite’s Child with Greek expats including Demis Roussos. Their single Rain and Tears was a hit across Europe, topping the French, Belgian and Italian charts and reaching the UK Top 30.

After they split – Vangelis deeming the world of commercial pop “very boring” – he returned to scoring film and TV. Turning down an invitation to replace Rick Wakeman on keyboards in Yes, he moved to London and signed a solo deal with RCA Records: his LPs Heaven and Hell (1975) and Albedo 0.39 (1976) each reached the UK Top 40, the former also used to soundtrack Carl Sagan’s popular TV series Cosmos. The connection with Yes was finally completed later in the decade, when he teamed with the band’s Jon Anderson for the duo Jon and Vangelis, whose debut album went Top 5.

Vangelis had continued his film score work throughout the 1970s, but it was in the 1980s that this reached its commercial heights. Chariots of Fire became inextricable from Vangelis’s timeless theme, and the music became synonymous with slow-motion sporting montages. “My music does not try to evoke emotions like joy, love, or pain from the audience. It just goes with the image, because I work in the moment,” he later explained.

His score to Blade Runner is equally celebrated for its evocation of a sinister future version of Los Angeles, where robots and humans live awkwardly alongside one another, through the use of long, malevolent synth notes; saxophones and lush ambient passages enhance the film’s romantic and poignant moments. “It has turned out to be a very prophetic film – we’re living in a kind of Blade Runner world now,” he said in 2005.

Later in the decade he scored the Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins drama The Bounty, and the Mickey Rourke-starring Francesco. He worked again with the Blade Runner director, Ridley Scott, on 1992 film 1492: Conquest of Paradise, and elsewhere during the 1990s, soundtracked Roman Polanski’s Bitter Moon, and documentaries by Jacques Cousteau.

Vangelis drew on Greek instrumentation alongside the typical orchestras used in film scoring on Oliver Stone’s 2004 classical epic, Alexander.

His most recent score is for El Greco, a 2007 Greek biopic of the Renaissance painter. The Greek artist, who moved to Spain and acquired his nickname there, was much admired by Vangelis, who composed albums in 1995 and 1998 that were inspired by and named after him.

Continually celebrated for his evocative Chariots of Fire theme, he was also commissioned by sporting bodies to soundtrack major events, including the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, and the 2004 Olympics in Athens. He also wrote ballet scores and music for stage productions of Medea, The Tempest and other plays.

Solo releases remained steady alongside his commissioned work, and occasionally included collaborations with vocalists such as Paul Young.

A fascination with outer space found voice in 2016’s Rosetta, dedicated to the space probe of the same name, and Nasa appointed his 1993 piece Mythodea (which he claimed to have written in an hour) as the official music of the Mars Odyssey mission of 2001. His final album, 2021’s Juno to Jupiter, was inspired by the Nasa probe Juno and featured recordings of its launch and the workings of the probe itself in outer space.

Motorsport pioneer Maria Teresa de Filipps, the first female Formula One driver, has died aged 89.

The Italian driver, from Lombardy, participated in five Grand Prix across 1958 and 1959, making her debut at the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix in a privateer Maserati. Across her three Grand Prix starts, her highest placing was tenth at the Belgian Grand Prix that same year, though she failed to score any points.

de Filipps was appointed Vice President of the Club of Former Grand Prix Drivers in 1997, and in 2004 founded the Maserati Club, later becoming its Chairperson.

This week on our dive into the F1 archives, we’re putting the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix under the microscope.

Contested at the Montjuïc Street Circuit in Barcelona, you may know that it was won by Jochen Mass, with Jacky Ickx and Carlos Reutemann rounding out the top three… but today we’re focusing on the driver who finished in sixth place.

Italian driver, and more notably the second female driver to compete in Formula 1, Lella Lombardi.

Lombardi is still to this day the most successful female driver in Grand Prix history, having scored just half a point at the 1975 Spanish GP, as the race was red flagged after 29 laps. Her career spanned 12 races across 17 entries, driving for March, RAM, and Williams. Her last race was the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix, where she finished twelfth.

17th October 1989 – The Sword and Lion, Oxford

“Okay and last question for the sports round,” A hushed washed over the pub, as the groups sat round almost every table leaned back in their seats to try and hear better. “Who is the only British female Formula One driver?”

The hush was replaced by a sea of confused murmurs.

“A female F1 driver?” One patron exclaimed in complete disbelief.

“There’s never been a woman in F1 it’s a trick question!” Another huffed with their arms folded across their chest.

“The answer, was Divina Galica. She took part in three race weekends, the 1976 British Grand Prix and the Argentine and Brazilian Grand Prix in 1978, though she never qualified for those races. She also competed in four Winter Olympics as a skier”

7th April 2010 – Brands Hatch Circuit

Rain came pouring down at the race track on a very cold, grey Spring day. It was the middle of the week, so the circuit sat empty, bar a handful of people in offices in the main pit building doing paperwork.

The Desiré Wilson grandstand sat right at the end of the start/finish straight, looking across Paddock Hill. As it got pelted with rain some looked out of their windows at the grandstand, and let out a small sigh before continuing on with their work.

Better known for her career in sportscar racing than her one race entry at the 1980 British Grand Prix, Desiré Wilson had won the race at Brands Hatch in the 1980 British Formula One championship. While completely separate from the series it was named after, it was still an astounding enough achievement that merited a grandstand being named in her honour.

Rain continued to fall for the rest of the day, and as the last of the office staff left, the grandstand stayed where it always had been, looking out over the circuit.

The fifth and still final female driver to compete in Formula 1 was Italian racer Giovanna Amati. She signed with Brabham for the 1992 season, alongside Eric van der Poele from Belgium.

She first drove an F1 car the year prior, driving 30 laps in a Benetton at a private test, prior to signing with Brabham. Amati became the first female driver in twelve years to take part in a Grand Prix weekend at the first race of the season in South Africa.

Her career was sadly short lived, as she failed to qualify in the first three races of the 1992 season, which resulted in Brabham replacing her with Damon Hill, who also failed to qualify in the next five races.

Amati had a brief spell in sportscar racing, before her retirement. She briefly worked as a television commentator and wrote columns for various Italian motorsport publications.

It would be another 24 years before Formula 1 would see another female driver compete in a Grand Prix weekend, when British driver Susie Wolff drove in first practice for Williams at the 2014 British Grand Prix (she went on to drive in three more practice sessions before announcing her retirement from racing).

This weekend sees the driver-less streak broken again as Amy McDonald will drive for Renault in the first practice session at this week’s Spanish Grand Prix in Valencia.

It is unclear if or even when Formula One will see a female driver permanently racing in the sport. Attitudes towards female drivers have come a long way thanks to the likes of W Series, and Formula 1’s own feeder series F1 Academy, though many questions still remain at just how competitive a female Formula 1 driver could be, if one was ever given the chance.

*pulls up chair into yr askbox and takes a drag of cigarette* im here to talk wva/remco. okay firstly literally i think abt the back to back pics like twice a week that whole photoshoot was my first wva/remco (wvemco...??) epiphany. but anyway being someone whose grasp on how contracts in this sport (also just the sport in generally) work is tenuous at best allows my brain to come up with random potentially highly implausible concepts such as: "wva ends up on quickstep". why? who knows! (wants a bigger/different role? something something merger fuckery? i dunno).

anyway but even if it makes no sense the narrative compels me. mainly the wout-pov experience of going from having jonas as the teams crown jewel to remco. there are so many core differences bw jonas and remco that setting wout against that change fascinates me. is remco as clear and concise a communicator as jonas is reported to be? maybe not. there might be more tension bw them wrt TTs and one day races (tho remco isnt going to like,, flanders afaik). i also feel like there have been moments where the media has perceived there to be tension bw wout and jonas where maybe, yes they didnt fully support each other as well as they couldve and they were selfish (bc they both have their own individual goals that they want to go for at the tour for example), but the two of them have such a clear understanding of one another and nothing but absolute support for each other that its obvious that theres no actual bad blood at all. i wonder how different things would be bw remco and wout! especially because remco is young and brash and comes across as moodier (?) than jonas and id be curious to see wout handle him.
